Watching Indian dramas make me realise that the concept of staying separately from both set of parents after marriage in my country is a great idea. The second thing that is often frowned upon is siblings married in the same family. This is also not encouraged. I am so glad these dramas validate that post marriage relship betwn u and ur parents and siblings change drastically. Don't you think people are involved too much in other people's lives in Indian dramas? Is it normal or dramatisation?
Siblings marrying into same family is generally just a TV thing, I don't think it's very prevalent irl. But my god, yes, the family being too damn involved in people's lives is ABSOLUTELY a real thing that happens in desi culture; AND NOT JUST AFTER MARRIAGE. Just check the TwoXIndia subreddit for all types of women struggling within various family dynamics; whether married, or single, or in a relationship. And I wouldn't say they're less involved in their sons' lives either. Basically there's no room for individuality or choices against the norm in our culture; and if you ask for that space, you are seen as selfish and a horrible child who is ungrateful for not bending over backwards and doing as the parental units have decreed you to live your life.

im so fucking sick of living here i want to get tf out of this country. i'd much rather have the identity crisis of a diaspora kid than live in a country that doesnt even pretend it doesnt hate women. the subreddit TwoXindia is is a reality check i didnt want. i can block out the arranged marriage shit because i know that that's not a problem i'll have to contend with, but the professionals talking about shitty men and shitty women in the workplace make my heart sink like nothing else
listen... I know. okay? I know.
