Sometimes I see people bag on Botw/Totk about how they aren’t real ‘Zelda’ games. Because they don’t follow the same format repeated since OoT. But when we think about it, OoT was ALSO a change from previous Zelda games. It was insanely different from the 2D games, having mastered linearity and adding a whole new piece to the story— time travel. We saw a sliver of this before but the way it was utilized was brand new.

Ocarina of Time introduced so many iconic moments, lore, and characters that have gone on to affect the series even now. It was DIFFERENT yet similar with its dungeon format.

Now, with BoTW and ToTK, we have a different format— a non-linear game with an open concept world. The dungeons are there but we all know they lack the same feel as the old ones, this was due to choice of developing the world over one-stop dungeons (at least in botw). We got a much more advanced version of these dungeons in ToTK, with more of a long form dungeon crawl that adds a better balance between the development of the world and these dungeons that we do get to go back to if we so choose.

Now, I’m now saying that these dungeons are the same as they used to be. They aren’t! But we have a world that I have not gotten sick of, in either game, despite this Hyrule being seven years old. This large expansive world is unlike ANY of the games.

BoTW & ToTK are transition games— they mark a new era of Zelda games. They have echoes of old games but are venturing into new plots and lore we have not seen. You see, these games are not a copy and paste of the lore and format we have gotten for literal decades. It’s something new, something that requires a transition.

If they had been copy and pasted formats, we would have haters calling it repetitive, a series long overdue for something different, etc. That’s just the way of the world haha

But these games are an exploration into a new era, a new set of lore and stories for us to enjoy. It’s something we can criticize but it isn’t something we can claim isn’t a Zelda game. It is. It’s just new, introducing new plot points and new mechanics. The series will have a plethora of new lore to delve into THANKS to BoTW/ToTK.

I’m excited to see where the story goes. No matter how much I wanted MORE I’m still quite content with what we have. It’s all the more reason to appreciate what we have and be excited for what’s to come.

People on twitter saying etoiles is homophobic makes me so angry and since im a french person part of the lgbt community, i think im qualified to talk about it.

So from what ive understood, 10 years ago, etoiles twitted the word electrof*g, which, not great but also its a word that doesnt exist at all in french. No one knows of it! (Actually thats what he explained in one of his tweet)

But seeing etoiles being called out for being homophobic by international people feels so wrong because he is one of the most lgbt friendly streamer. I know his streams are a safe space for a lot of queer people in france and people calling him out on this just doesnt sit well with me

Just some thoughts about the convos I’ve seen floating around about giving credit for ideas and HCs in fandom content.

I know I’ve read things that felt familiar - by familiar I mean they felt very similar or the same to what I’ve written. But at the same time, unless one was the first person to write Ghost fanfiction, isn’t it all derivative to some degree.

This isn’t a criticism against people who want to be credited for their HCs and ideas. I’m just saying that I believe people pick things up subconsciously. I’m sure I did.

My HC for Dew is that he’s a hybrid and he has heterochromia for example. Long after I started writing that, I came across other people who HC’d him the same way. People who I’ve never crossed paths with that came to that on their own. I didn’t steal from them and they didn’t steal from me. There are only so many conclusions you can make about how he ended up being water and then fire.

I feel like a lot of Phantom HCs are very similar. Especially his appearance. And I don’t know where it started. Who came up with the HC that he has vitiligo/scars/white lock of hair?

Genuinely curious about this one. I drew him that way mid June. But he appeared end of May. (No im not saying I came up with these HCs, I don’t know who did) I HC him as blind, both eyes with cataracts but some people HC him with one. Or none. I’m so curious about what sparked the idea. Was it just the name? It was insane how quickly everyone came up with so many HCs for him. (But not Aurora which is another matter).

My ghouls (Kilonova mostly) speak diff languages. Dew speaks Latin, Rain speaks German, Ifrit is a polyglot. I know other people have language HCs too but I don’t think they copied me at all or even read it.

I just think it’s kind of a precarious situation. Of course, if you knowingly are influenced by something or someone and then knowingly add their ideas to your fic, you should give credit.

Again this is so not meant to criticize anyone who’s felt plagiarized.

It’s more like where is the line I guess. I can personally say I’ve read things that made me scratch my head a little. But I’m sure someone has read mine and felt the same. I just think we need to be careful tossing around those types of accusations.

In all seriousness, while I'm fine with *joking* about Christian themes in Genshin (there are a lot of tongue-in-cheek references indeed, especially since we are now in the equivalent of France), seeing them presented as the main inspiration feels deeply uncomfortable. It takes the flavour out of the story and I don't even think it's correct.

@liminalpsych-in-teyvat summarised it beautifully:

Genshin is a beautiful mix of traditions blended into something unique and I prefer it that way.

I hope the story takes an unexpected turn and puts and end to these theories. If Hoyo are indeed working more with themes of illusions, ignorance and enlightenment rather than sin and redemption/retribution (in line with the Gnostic concepts of the world) this will happen eventually.

unfortunately i've seen a lot of misinterpretation of his character like this recently, especially in my tiktok comment sections and i think it's insane. people are unable to look past the fact he's killed people (just like Law and Bege have) and decide to add very weird additions to his character. these misconceptions definitely stem from how Kid presents, how he acts and how he behaves the few times he appears.

Kid is written to parallel Luffy, they're equals and very similar in their moral codes. so i always think it's crazy when people interpret him as a misogynistic or a r*pist, they'd never call any of the other supernovas or Luffy such names.

i was talking to a friend the other day about the hate he gets and realised that a lot of the hate Kid gets comes from his visual appearance, since he's not as conventionally attractive as Luffy or Law he gets hate on their behalf. haters don't like that he's a punk and that he's a new addition to the Luffy+Law alliance.

It’s very crazy to me that anyone, regardless who they “support” during the dance, would like viserys. And yeah, I do say this specifically for the people who like Rhaenyra’s character yet champion viserys as this feminist girl dad who loved her no matter what. Both the book and show versions set Rhaenyra up to fail. And probably through watching her dad be incompetent, Rhaenyra put a nail in her own coffin by being so flippant and reactive versus proactive about everything.

Viserys killed Aemma for heirs, leaving Rhaenyra motherless and scared for the future. He married her best friend and first love, maritally r*ped Alicent, and produced more heirs knowing the strife that would follow. He never shored up Rhaenyra’s claim properly. He let her get away with mistake after mistake bc his own guilt ate him alive. When I call Viserys stupid, I do not mean in the traditional sense. He makes horribly decisions but he is fully aware of what he is doing. Viserys was smart enough to know what he was doing when it came to harming Aemma. He was smart enough to know what he was doing when he continued to let Daemon come back despite his behavior. He was smart enough to know what he was doing when he married a 15 year old. He was smart enough to know that he what he was doing when he neglected Alicent and children he forced her to have. He was smart enough to know what he was doing when he named Rhaenyra heir (out of spite and guilt mind you), and then ignored her.

I think a lot of people let their blind hatred towards Alicent lead to them defending people who objectively don’t even have Rhaenyra’s best interest at hand. Viserys is the reason everything went to shit for Rhaenyra.

I am once again thinking about Viserys calling Rhaenyra "my only child" and just how fucking cruel that is. I've seen a lot of people take that statement to strengthen the point of Rhaenyra being Viserys' legitimate heir. Because "my only child = my only heir". The Greens are once again proven wrong and Aegon is truly a ursuper, because there was never a point where Viserys wanted him to inherent the throne.

I have a lot of complicated feelings on this reading. I think to some degree it's fair to read it as a political statement. It's a feudalist society and every familial bond is also a political one. But what irks me about this reading so much is that it treats Viserys as a sort of moral compass and his will as morally validating. Rhaenyra inhereting is right, because that is what Viserys wanted. And I think if that's what you take from that scene, you sort of deny how incredibly cruel Viserys is here and was probably for many, many years.

I don't mean that he's vicious or anything like that. Viserys is indecisive and wants to avoid conflict at all cost - and he's in a position of power where he's allowed to just ignore everything that he doesn't want to deal with. Which he does. Frequently. And there's cruelty in that - for the people, who have to play a long in his desire for absolute harmony.

"My only child" is so cruel, because Viserys is literally the one person who had any form of agency in that situation. Sure there was pressure from the concil, but he is still the king. 15 year old Alicent had no say in the matter of marrying him. He did. He didn't have to marry her. He didn't have to maritally rape her, impregnating her again and again. He was an adult, who choose to do these things and then ignored the consequences of his actions until he died. "My only child" is not some great proof of love to Rhaenyra or even Aemma. It's Viserys being neglectful and willfully blind.
