What Could Have Been: Frodo and Sam's Adventures in Minas Morgul
In the published version of Lord of the Rings, Frodo and Sam only see Minas Morgul from a distance. However, at one point, Tolkien had a different idea in mind for the two hobbits. Instead of being taken to Cirith Ungol, Frodo is taken to Minas Morgul (the geography has not yet been finalized at this point).
An uneasy twilight lay in the shadowy streets. Shrill cries came as it were from underground, strange shapes flitted by or peered out of alley[s] and holes in the [?gaping] houses; there were [??dispirited] voices and faint echoes of monotonous and unhappy song. All the carven faces leered, and their eyes glowed with a fire at great depth.
The hobbits shuddered as they hurried on. Feet seemed to follow them, and they turned many corners, but they never threw them off. Rustling and pattering on the stones they came doggedly after them.
They came to the gates. The main gates were closed; but a small door was still open. Sentinels stood on either side, and at the opening stood an armed warder, gazing out into the gathering dusk. The Orcs were waiting for the messenger from Baraddur.
--"The Story Foreseen from Lorien," The Treason of Isengard, 336-7.
This chapter of HoME is very interesting, because it gives a glimpse into the mysterious city of the wraiths. "Minas Morgul must be made more horrible. The usual 'goblin' stuff is not good enough here," Tolkien stated in one of his notes (340).
The Silent Watchers of Cirith Ungol were originally written as being in Minas Morgul. There are other statues which appear to be haunted as well. Some even posses glowing eyes!
Tolkien had difficulty figuring out how to get Frodo and Sam out of Minas Morgul, and came up with several possibilities. Several scenarios involve the hobbits pretending to be orcs and attempting to simply walk out of the city gates. ("Swagger is the only hope, Mr. Frodo, begging your pardon." 337) In other scenarios, the hobbits rely upon the elven cloaks to protect them from enemy eyes.
Tolkien even explored the possibility of a Nazgul arriving in Minas Morgul while the hobbits are in the city. "A Vulture bearing a Ringwraith settles in the main square. The Ringwraith has come to take Frodo back to the Dark Tower. At that moment boom, the alarm is sounded from Loathly Tower. The Ringwraith says Ring has not left City: he feels it. Hunt in town. Hairbreadth escape of hobbits." (343)
An exploration of what could have been.

Now with Minas Ithil (1991), we’ve got a real campaign sourcebook for MERP.
It’s a city book, detailing one of the cities of Gondor at the feet of the mountains that surround Mordor (Cirith Ungol and the lair of Shelob are in a pass leading directly east from the city). Minas Ithil was once the seat of Gondor — the first white tree was there, it had a palantir and was generally a place of strength that monitored Mordor for Sauron’s return. Around the middle of the Third Age, though, it was beset by plagues, depopulated and eventually seized by the Witch-King, after which it was called Minas Morgul. So you get a city you can explore at its height, during its twilight and, conceivably, as it falls. It also informs, though only dimly, what its afterlife as Minas Morgul might be like. It’s my pick for one of the best realized MERP supplements. It almost makes me want to run it.
The city is exhaustively detailed, with page after page of maps. If you don’t want to play MERP, you could very easily file the serial numbers off and have your own generic doomed city. I really love the number of illustrations of building facades and city streets by Ellisa Martin — they work the same way the exterior illustrations in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay do, establishing the mood and the tactile feel of the city. More city books should do this, to the point that I don’t understand why this isn’t a universal standard. David Martin’s cover extends this a bit, with its eagle eye view. I’m also a sucker for ringwraiths riding fell beasts, so.

Twilight Origin Stories Masterlist
**The origin stories are currently closed, but I’ll open them up again in a little while as part of my 600 follower celebration! I just need a bit to catch up on all the wonderful requests I currently have :) Once I get to 600, I’ll open this again as well as a few other things to celebrate! See you then!
Hi! These are so fun and I know it’s difficult to find asks once they’ve been posted (at least for me, it takes me to the person’s profile rather than the answered ask, so I have to go looking for it) so I figured I would keep them all in one place so you can find yours :) I’m putting them in order of change year, because that just makes sense in my mind, haha. Want one? Start here!

Mors Vincit Omnia Pt. 1
In a world where the gods have been reborn into mortal forms, and remade by being turned into vampires, there’s man who believes that he’s the Anti-Christ. Unfortunately for him, he’s sold to the highest bidder, and despite his best efforts, he’s stuck with them. For now.

A/N: Ahh, so it’s been about six or seven months since I’ve written anything for the Twilight fandom and uh, I couldn’t sleep until I got this super angsty series out of my head. Also I don’t know anything about American Horror Story; I got the eleven-minute Youtube rundown of Michael Langdon’s character and his AHS article on the fandom website. That being said, I think it’s a fair point to say that Michael is probably a little OOC.
Warnings: Kidnapping, Mentions of torture, Canon violence (Michael gets turned into a vampire), Blood

The Romanian lords have been plotting their revenge against the Volturi for centuries but nothing can stand against the might of the gifts that they’ve collected and coerced throughout the years. Stefan and Vladimir are nothing against their might; they once had the opportunity with the Cullen’s to bring the Volturi down, but their golden-eyed counterparts wished not for battle, not for the wrath and ruin of those who had hunted them down, not for the fall of a corrupt regime. Now, they have become desperate.
Michael Langdon truly believes he’s the Antichrist and has the powers and prowess to back it up. His exploits aren’t unheard of-- although society as a whole seems to view him as just a charmingly lost soul-- and one has to go through all the right wrong networks to find his true list of crimes. Luckily for two desperate vampire lords, no price was too high and Michael Langdon has become revealed to the world of vampires. By revealed, he means that the witch coven hiding him has quite literally sold him to the highest bidder. He can’t read their minds. He can’t sense their presence. They were two figures shrouded in black who spoke nothing to him and nothing to each other, and for once, for once in his life, Michael felt a sense of unease. He fought for his freedom but they’ve just as soon as bound him in a tongue he doesn’t know, tying his hands behind his back and shackling his feet together. He can feel the power thrumming through the invisible force that binds him.
They would not offer him food nor drink. He walked as they did, slipping in the shadows of forests and cities unknown to him. Michael wasn’t exactly one to be a prisoner, but the harder he fought against the cuffs, the tighter they seemed to bind him, until he’s left dizzy and dazed and doesn’t know his right from his left. And just when it seemed like he was on the brink of passing out, the cuffs loosen and his vision returns. Michael has seen some grandeur in his lifetime, but nothing compared to this castle. It was absolutely immaculate, beautiful and in all its prime for being a castle. Ornate weapons were placed neatly onto the walls, breathtaking marble statues adorning the lobby.
“Good. You’re awake.” One of them slipped his hood down, revealing a man with blindingly white hair and red eyes. “Welcome to Castle Transylvania.”
“Hardly a welcome.” Michael replied, spitting in the man’s face.
“He is feisty; I’ll give him that.” The other one murmured. “Hello, Michael Langdon. You’ve somehow been deluded into believing you’re the Antichrist.”
“I am the Antichrist.”
“Still chasing after that foolish notion.” The dark-haired man purred. “I’m Stefan. This is my coven mate, Vladimir. We think you have something we need.” Michael lunged forward, but the snap of Stefan’s fingers had the cuffs so tight on him again that he was dizzy and dazed, drained of his powers.
“I wouldn’t, darling.” Vladimir remarked. “Stefan might be the patient one but you don’t want to get on his bad side. You think we won’t torture you, little Antichrist? We’ve been around your kind before.”
“You can try. You may find I don’t break easily!” Michael growled.
“Save your fire for someone you can kill.” Stefan muttered. “You don’t,” He cupped Michael’s cheek in his hand, and Michael tried to bite him for it before Stefan’s fingers pressed back into his jaw like a vice, nails splitting the skin beneath his fingers. Blood stained into his fingertips and began a trail down Michael’s neck. “You don’t,” Stefan purred, getting into Michael’s face, “Want to try me. I’ll break you, Michael Langdon, and believe me, you don’t want that. So save your pretty little spitfire for someone who gives a damn.”
“What do you want from me?” Vladimir chuckled.
“Smart boy. Now you start asking the real questions. We don’t want anything from you; we simply would like to unleash you.”
“A little hard to do with the shackles.”
“Oh, my dear sweet child,” Stefan’s breath whispered into his ear. “We are just getting started.”

Gollum’s teeth work, so the Nazgul are still alive
Well, “alive.”
The Ring was clearly helping Gollum maintain his body. It’s serious about “a mortal who possesses a Great Ring does not die.” Not just aging, but preventing a million diseases after five hundred years of an all-fish diet.
So I think a mortal who possesses a Great Ring gets elf-style healthcare. The Ring boosts their soul, the soul knows how a body is supposed to work, and nudges it along to work right even if it’s not quite physically possible. (And eventually they end up faded and bodiless with their physical form being a mere memory. Sound familiar?)
This isn’t just a way to use a Ring. It’s a transformation a Ring does to you. “If he often uses the Ring to make himself invisible, he fades.” And Gollum stayed alive for decades after losing the Ring. There were even a few moments where Frodo took the Ring with a claim strong enough to shake Barad-dur and specifically tried to fight Gollum. But Gollum didn’t just fall apart, because the Ring wasn’t what was holding him together. He just was a kind of creature that works this way now. Otherwise Frodo could say “my Ring and I don’t want to keep paying for your dental” and Gollum’s not biting off any fingers.
The Ringwraiths don’t just have Elf physiology like Gollum, they’re completely faded. But if Gollum wasn’t dependent on the Ring to keep him alive, they probably aren’t depending on theirs either. They just...are...faded-bodiless-walkers-in-twilight now.
And if they aren’t depending on the Nine Rings to keep them alive, they’re still out there. Disabled and very very traumatized, but at least they’re free of Sauron.
(The funniest possible resolution is that they go West and fool all the Valar except maybe Mandos into thinking they’re faded Elves. You can’t prove this didn’t happen.)

TIMELINE STUFF for LOTR
@faye-andrews useful bits for reference just if we’re using timeline :O
TA 241 - Arwen Undómiel is born to Elrond and Celebrían.
TA 2931 - Birth of Aragorn, called Estel until his coming of age, son of Arathorn II and Gilraen.
TA 2933 - Arathorn is killed while pursuing orcs. Aged 2 Aragorn was sent to be fostered in Rivendell by Elrond. At the request of his mother, his lineage was kept secret, as she feared he would be killed like his father and grandfather if his true identity as the descendant of Elendil and Heir of Isildur became known. Aragorn was renamed Estel and was not told about his heritage until 2951
TA 2951 - By his twentieth year, while walking in the woods singing a part of the Lay of Lúthien, he witnessed the beauty of Arwen for the first time, clad in a mantle of silver and blue. Mistaking her for Lúthien, he called to her by that name, and, from that moment on, loved only her. Gilraen warned Aragorn of the folly of his love for Arwen, a high-born Elf such as she was.
TA 2951 - Aragorn soon left Rivendell, and for thirty years fought against Sauron on whatever front which was deemed necessary. Sauron declares his presence in Mordor openly. Estel, later known as Aragorn, comes of age and is told about his heritage.
TA 2956 - Aragorn first meets Gandalf the Grey.
TA 2957-TA 2980 - Aragorn as Thorongil  ("Eagle of the Star") serves in the armies of King Thengel of Rohan, and Steward Ecthelion II of Gondor. Aragorn undertook great journeys, serving in the armies of King Thengel of Rohan, and Steward Ecthelion II of Gondor. Many of his tasks helped to raise morale in the West and counter the growing threat of Sauron and his allies, and he earned priceless experience which he would later put to use in the War of the Ring.
Aragorn served his lords in disguise and his name in Gondor and Rohan during that time was Thorongil. With a small Gondor squadron of ships, he led an assault on the long-standing rebel province of Umbar in 2980, burning many of the Corsairs' ships and personally slaying their lord during the battle on the Havens. After the victory at Umbar, "Thorongil" left the field and, to the dismay of his men, went east.
TA 2980 - In his forty-ninth year of life, after years of strife and toil, he wished, once again, to be at peace. He came into Lórien, not knowing that Arwen also was there, and stayed with her for a season. "And thus it was that Arwen first beheld him again after their long parting; and as he came walking towards her under the trees of Caras Galadhon laden with flowers of gold, her choice was made and her doom appointed."
TA 2980 -  On Cerin Amroth, in the midst of Lórien they pledged to marry, looking toward the shadow of the east and the twilight of the west. He gave her the heirloom of his House, the Ring of Barahir, and, on the hill of Cerin Amroth, Arwen pledged her hand to him in marriage, renouncing her elvish lineage and accepting the Gift of Men: death.
Aragorn, in the service of the Steward of Gondor Ecthelion II leads a taskforce south and kills the Captain of the Haven, ruler of Umbar.
TA 3001 - Bilbo Baggins turns 111 and leaves the Shire. Gandalf enlists Aragorn's help in tracking Gollum, then finds Isildur's scroll in Minas Tirith describing the One Ring.
TA 3009 - Aragorn captures Gollum at Gandalf's request, and brings him as a captive to King Thranduil's halls in Mirkwood
TA 3018 - The Ringwraiths are given the task of retrieving the One Ring;
April 12, 3018 - Gandalf returns to the Shire telling Frodo Baggins he must take the ring away.
May 1, 3018 - Gandalf meets Aragorn at Sarn Ford to discuss Frodo's plan.
September 29, 3018 - The hobbits arrive at Bree at nightfall. Gandalf visits The Gaffer. Aragorn meets Frodo in the Inn of the Prancing Pony.
September 30, 3018 - Aragorn leaves Bree with Frodo and company and they pass through the Chetwood.
October 1, 3018 - Gandalf leaves Bree.
October 2, 3018 - Aragorn and the hobbits enter the Midgewater Marshes.
October 3, 3018 - Gandalf is attacked during his night at Weathertop.
October 6, 3018 - The night at Weathertop. The Nazgûl locate Aragorn and the four hobbits. Frodo Baggins is hurt by a Morgul blade.
October 11, 3018 - Glorfindel expels the Ringwraiths from the Last Bridge.
October 13, 3018 - Aragorn and the hobbits cross the bridge.
May 1, 3019 - Aragorn is crowned King Elessar of the Reunited Kingdom of Arnor and Gondor; Gandalf helps Aragorn to find the sapling of the new White Tree.
Mid-year's Day (between June and July) 3019 - Aragorn marries Arwen Undómiel.

I Meant To Get Further In The Story: the saga of every time I write something like this, why do I even kid myself.
[Prologue, 1, 2, 3 ]
Pike collects Scanlan, quietly this time, and they return to their hobbit-sized room, to fuss at the fire and worry. They don’t have much time to do either—Minxie follows them in, unseen until they’ve cast a little more light around the room. Scanlan jumps, and draws the sword he got from the Barrow-downs, from the old kings of the hills.
Pike lays a hand on his arm, though she does not step in his way.
“Peace,” says the ranger, and draws back her hood to reveal darkly tanned skin, just a shade paler than Gilmore’s, and grey-green eyes and hair like autumn leaves. She keeps her hands raised for another moment, showing them empty, though she does not seem overly concerned.
They talk a little. The ranger explains herself, a little. They do not have time to do more—soon enough, Laina knocks briskly and bustles in, and hands Pike a letter signed with a familiar runic G.
“I do apologize for the delay,” she says, wiping flour- and ale-stained hands on her similarly colored apron. “On just it was just one thing and another, you know? Well, tell me if you need anything else before bed!”
“An urgent matter has arisen,” reads the letter, and “move sooner than planned, alas—you ought be out of the Shire by the end of July, at the VERY latest.” (It was now several days into October.) And “You may meet a Ranger on the road, a friend of mine who goes by the name of ‘Minxie.’ Take her guidance and council well.”
“Hold on a minute,” says Scanlan, still placing himself between Pike and the stranger. “How do we know you’re the real ‘Minxie’ like Gilmore said? You could’ve killed her and stolen her clothes, for all we know.”
“Trust me,” the ranger says quietly. “If I had killed the original Minxie, and I wanted the…trinket you carry, you would be dead and I would have it—now!”
The hobbits leap back as she springs to her feet, cloak flung back, revealing a sword at her hip and a presence fit for battle. Her eyes flash with the firelight, and Scanlan nearly drops the short barrow-sword he does not know how to use.
Then she sits again, with a slight smile, cloak still open to reveal the blade she draws—broken, shattered just a couple inches below the hilt.
“No, I am the original. Minxie, also known as Keyleth, daughter of Vilya. And if by life or death I can save you, I will.”
(“Be sure it is the real Minxie,” says Gilmore’s postscript. “Her true name is Keyleth. All that is gold does not glitter Not all those who wander are lost…”*)
A pony is acquired. A journey is embarked. A terrifying attack in the night sees them off, rooms changed and bedstuff torn to shreds, with the piercing, bone-chilling cry of a Nazgul robbed of their prey.
They reach Weathertop, find a stone marked with three scratches and something like a G, and set up camp as night falls. Minxie sings a tale of heroes, of love in starlight, and at their backs the campfire is warm…but the darkness is cold. Is terribly cold. It reaches into Pike’s bones and steals her breath, especially when Minxie darts away into the shadows for more wood, as they are feeding the fire fast.
No sooner is she gone than there are shapes in the dark, five now, cloaked in black and advancing with cold steel.
Scanlan still doesn’t know how to use his sword, nor Pike her Sting, not really.  The fire drops in the chill wind that accompanies the Ringwraiths, a wind that bears terror in its voice, and Pike runs before she can think. Her hand slips to her chest, toe the Ring on its chain, and she means to clutch it safe, she does, but instead her finger goes through as she yanks—
And stumbles, as the world turns pale, and colder yet. Yet there is light. Not enough to see Scanlan, a small, vague shape shouting in the distance. Quite enough to see the Black Riders, though they are not black in this moment. They are shrouded in dark grey, faceless, nearly formless, save that of ghostly armor and dark, bright eyes. And the one in the lead wears a crown upon her brow, and she reaches down for Pike with queenly grace—demanding, but welcoming, her blade for the moment lowered—
Another dark shape flings itself into the Witch-Queen’s side, far larger than Scanlan. Not Minxie either, though—that is the figure charging up the hill, red-burning torch in hand; she thrusts it like a sword at the Wraiths.
“Leave ‘er alone!” shouts a loud, rough voice. “She’s all tiny!”
The Witch-Queen shoves her assailant back with the strength of the undead, and flings her blade at Pike’s chest. Pike gathers her senses just in time, and rolls, and it hits her shoulder instead. It pierces like ice. Like the winter of legend when the wolves crossed the Brandywine, like a morning plunge into an snow-cold lake.
Pike takes off the Ring.
“Hey,” says an orc, grinning at her with tusks tipped with blood, as the Witch-Queen turns her horse and leaves. “You’re a Trickfoot, right? I been looking for Trickfoots.”
“Trickfeet,” Pike says faintly, on a very, very old reflex. She cannot feel her shoulder. Elsewhere, the other Riders retreat from Minxie’s flames, and Scanlan’s new, smaller torch. They follow their leader’s call.
The orc furrows his brow, clearly thinking hard. “Is that the same thing? The guy I know was Wilhand Trickfoot. Like, one foot. He’s the hobbit I know.”
“Wait.” Pike props herself up on the elbow that she could still feel, that doesn’t seem to be engulfed in ice. “Are you Grog?”
Cursed blades, and some explanation thereof. A very hasty, and then longer, elaboration on that oft-befuddled chapter of a previous tale, on how Wilhand Trickfoot lost his dwarves, found a young orc, and ended up escaping a mountain with him. (The simultaneous realization, on the parts of Pike, Scanlan, and Minxie, that Grog truly believes invisibility to be a natural ability of hobbits.)
Athelas. But even in the hands of a skilled healer, he ancient herb has limits. A shard of the Witch-Queen’s blade is such a limit. It is not long before Pike is being carried rather than walking, by Grog or the pony. They take turns. The Ring stays around her neck, bound once more on its chain, but the world fades anyway, in her mind’s eye. The fog seeps in, and at its heels the chill, so she thinks she will not be warm again.
When two elves ride down the road to meet them, Pike thinks she might be dreaming. For one thing, it is twilight, and the fog that is not there is thick, and she does not see them until well after Minxie gives a glad cry and races ahead. For another, one of them is riding a bear.
She is also holding an arrow nocked at Grog’s head. Pike pushes herself up from his arms to wave that no, no, he’s a friend. Tusks and all.
The Riders come, now the full Nine, their Queen at their head.
“Trinket, get her to safety!” shouts the archer—Vax? Vix? Pike is so cold she feels warm, and cannot keep their names straight. She does not fall off the bear’s back even as he lurches into motion, even as he barrels through four of the Nine who converge on them from ahead, in ambush. Even as they ford the river and it rises at Trinket’s heels, and he turns back with a wild roar at the Riders follow. Pike sees them clearly now: the queen in her crown, the lieutenant-king with his black sword, the rest, royalty all, less mighty but their laughter no less cruel. Pike brandishes her sword, swaying.
But the river is rising in waves of chargåing white horses, and behind them are shadows holding red flames, and two figures of white light, and the shrouded ones are overturned and the mists rise with the waves. Their crashing roar fills the air, fills everything…
And for a while, Pike knows no more.
* I thought, for a moment, that I should attempt to write my own poem for Keyleth. But, like, how could I possibly be better than this one. Just in general.

"They are the Nazgul, Ringwraiths, neither living nor dead. At all times they feel the presence of the Ring, drawn to the power of the One. They will never stop hunting you." I kind of wish the Nazgul and Twilight Ringwraith had the same pose. But this effect kind of works. #TwilightRingwraith #FunkoPop #Nazgul #Funko #PopVinyl #TheLordOfTheRings #TopFunkoPhotos #TFP_PrettyMonster #FunkoPopExclusive
