Okay, so while I think MCR is a bit self-serious in general, I have to say that they were absolutely right in their rejection of participating in the Twilight franchise soundtracks. Their music and messages are so completely divorced from the idealistic, glossed-over style of romantic fantasy that Twilight is.

And the manner in which their songs are applied by Meyer in her Twilight playlists is appallingly shallow, verging on disrespectful. That she would apply a song like "Sleep" or "This is How I Disappear" to Jacob's depthless teenage angst in the Eclipse epilogue is mind-boggling. The same could really be said of any song from The Black Parade applied to Twilight. The album deals with the concept of having to confront death: something that Twilight, as a series, actively avoids. Bella and the characters drawn into her and Edward's romance routinely face the possibility of death, but each time it is blithely circumvented by a happier, easier outcome. Only in the case of Harry Clearwater is death truly dealt with by any of the characters, and then only behind the scenes.

Even in Breaking Dawn when The Cullens are faced with the possibility of only having a few weeks left to live, the only casualty in the end is a character the reader has never actually met and has every reason to think of poorly, based on her behavior.

I'm not one of those people who thinks that there should have been a full on conflict in which many lives are lost at the end of Breaking Dawn. I don't think that this story (being romantic fantasy fluff) would have benefitted in any real way from Major Character Death--I had my fill of "guess who all dies in the last book" from Harry Potter. But that doesn't stop me from acknowledging that examination of mortality through art, as in the case of the The Black Parade, is important and when it is done it should be handled for what it is and not applied to your blorbos (original or otherwise) based on a superficial similarity in a title or line of the song.

In fact, most of the songs on the Twilight playlists are incredibly misapplied: in some cases humorously, and in others mortifyingly.
