It's so interesting to see your older artwork. I remember that baby Sette art from Facebook! I'm really interested to know how your style has developed over time. If you were to draw that piece again today, what changes or improvements might you make?

I wouldn't change much. I can post that older drawing because it doesn't make me twitchy and uncomfortable like so much of my older art does. No glaring mistakes. You know what are really bad are all those old TWC incentive drawings. Woof! Never posting those!

I think it's easier to SEE how my style's developed than to try and put it into words. Look at the difference in the character art between the first few chapters and the latest. The anatomy is much better and less tortured. The biggest problem I had starting out was I was stuck drawing anime anatomy and trying to reconcile that with more western page layout and action sensibilities. The mix isn't great.

When I brushed up my anatomy and got my proportions in line, it all started to gel better. Everyone started looking more like their authentic selves. The backgrounds were always pretty okay - honestly the forest backgrounds are pretty excellent in the early chapters - but they got even better when I started to loosen up. I used to map out a perspective grid for every panel and use the line tool way too much. Makes the early backgrounds stiff and sterile. Probably would be fine if you were after that look for like, scifi, but for the warm lived-in backgrounds I wanted, it was no good. They're better now.

Really the number one tip I can give any comic artist is to loosen up. Don't worry about closing every shape, don't worry about straight lines being perfectly straight. Don't worry about drawing every strand of hair, every button, every brick in a wall or cobble on a street. Focus on the big picture: character gesture, silhouette, eye movement across the page. The rest will fall into line.
