dear USamericans,
others have said it better than me, but if your knowledge and love for germany basically boils down to WWII, warfare, and weapons, and the only things you can say in german are names of weapons or tanks or what-not (instead of for example 'Ich mag Musik.' (I like music.) or 'Meine Geschwister nerven.' (My siblings are annoying.) or literally anything that is not war-related), then piss off (:
we don't want you, we don't like you, we don't want you anywhere near our actual culture (which is much more poetry, meat, and beer related than anything else i've said so far), you don't know anything about us, our culture, or anything that really makes germany germany, and you are not a "germany enthusiast" or "history enthusiast"
this goes especially if your family went from germany to the US during WWII. you're not ""embracing your heritage/culture"", you're being a massive dick
sincerely,
germans

This is not meant to be accusatory in any sense, but I’m not sure if you’re aware that ‘blitzkrieg’ is normally associated with the Nazi’s war effort in WW2. You don’t have to post this ask at all, if you don’t want to. I was just letting you know if you weren’t aware, not pressuring you to do anything! /g
hihi !!
we're aware of the fact that it's often seen as a nazi tactic , but other militaries had used it , or similar , before that. also , general heinz guderian was likely not an antisemite , and while he & his wife were aware of the concentration camps , they weren't aware of the systematic killing , his wife (who was a stronger admirer of hitler) was disturbed when she learned the truth.
we're not intending to dismiss or ignore his actions , but they were moreso that of a well-trained military officer than of an antisemite. the war was awful & so were the ideologies behind it , but individual circumstance does impact a person's actions.
we're sorry if we upset you at all !! we're working to be more aware of things that could upset people , especially stuff with our special interests since we tend to just go ham with facts ,,,

I found one of the phones designed by post World War 2 German scientists that was made to talk to the dead. I had a really bad feeling, I wouldn't like what would happen after if I answered the ringing.

I don't really know what to say about Oppenheimer and Christopher Nolan's newest glorification of white violence, I truly don't have a strong opinion either way nor do I have much to say on the film other than I hope the movie itself is less about glorifying Oppenheimer as some American folk hero and more about the massacre and devestation caused by the bombs
And on a personal note, the Japanese side of my family literally came from a suburb of Hiroshima. Of course, my great grandfather left Hiroshima with his brother long before WWII started and he settled in Hawai'i while his brother settled in Salinas Valley CA, when the war broke out the Salinas Valley branch of our family was all sent to the internment camps and two of my great uncles who left Hawai'i for the mainland were also interned along with their spouses and children, the only reason my grandmother and her family weren't interned is because there were just too many Japanese in Hawai'i to intern them, they were 60% of the population, interning Hawaiian Japanese would have meant capsizing Hawai'i's economy, (it didn't stop them from making a few internment camps for influential Japanese community leaders in Hawai'i though). Before the bombs were dropped, a distant relative of mine, a second cousin twice removed or something like that, went back to Japan, they went back to Hiroshima, back to where my family first came from. They went home to family
And then the bombs dropped.
And for months upon months, my family thought they were dead. They were finally able to contact our family and say they were still alive. They got lucky and didn't die in the bombing, but their story is an outlier, and my family got really really lucky in that regard. Of course, I have no idea about the family we still had in Hiroshima before my great grandfather left, but there's no doubt in my mind that I lost family when those bombs dropped, there's no doubt in my mind that a piece of my family history was destroyed, there is not doubt in my mind that there is forever an indelible mark on my family for the rest of time all because the US wanted to test out their fancy new toy that they made their pet scientist Oppenheimer build
I don't care about Oppenheimer, I care about the family I will never get to know

The only real quibble I have with Godzilla Minus One was in the English translation. The characters in the subtitles kept referring to jet fighters. Japan didn't have any usable jet fighters in World War II. They had a single prototype called the Nakajima Kikka but it only ever flew once in August of 1945 before the war was over and the project scrapped.
Tumblr media
It was heavily based on the Luftwaffe's Messerschmitt Me 262 and even looks a great deal like it.
Tumblr media
During WWII, the Japanese used prop-driven planes exclusively. Only the Nazis ever fielded a jet fighter and then only at the very end of the war and in a very limited capacity. No one in the movie would have experience with flying jets. The Imperial Japanese also had a Rocket Plane called the Mitsubishi JM8 Shushui but that was powered by a rocket.
Tumblr media
Again, it was based one a German design, the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet
Tumblr media
The JM8 did not see much use as there were only 8 operational planes ever made and 60 training versions produced before the end the the war. That may have been way too much historical info for why the characters using Jet Fighter as a term in the subtitles of G -1.0 bothered me.

Many of today’s most beloved superheroes were created by Jews, many of whom were children of European immigrants, during the height of Nazism in the 1930s-40s. They had relatives in Europe, they heard what was happening to their fellow Jews, and they used fiction to fight back.
During the Holocaust, Jewish men created Superman to be a champion of the oppressed and a hope for a better tomorrow. Captain America was created to be explicitly anti-Hitler and to encourage the USA’s entry into WWII. They are now some of the world’s most recognizable characters, and they’re the living legacy of Jewish creators who used art and storytelling to fight Nazism.
So, modern-day writers turning those characters into Nazis and totalitarian dictators is deeply disrespectful to the legacy of the Jewish creators who shaped the superhero comics industry.

Famous Greeks who fought in the Greek resistance against the Axis Powers in WWII
Tumblr media
Odysseus Elytis (middle): The nobelist poet served as a second lieutenant in the Greek frontline. After a few months he contracted a severe case of typhus, so he had to be hospitalized. He recovered and a lot of his future poetic work was inspired by the war.
Tumblr media
Nikephoros Vrettakos (standing on the right in the first picture): The poet and author fought in the frontline in 1940 and almost got killed in Klisura. After his regiment was dissolved, he joined EAM / ELAS (Greek People's Liberation Army) and continued fighting until 1944.
Tumblr media
Nikos Kavvadias (seated): Well known for his poetry inspired by his adventures in the sea, the sailor rarely wrote prose, but when he did, it was usually inspired by his days in land fighting in the war.
Many other poets also fought in the war. Ángelos Sikelianós volunteered to join the army, but he was rejected because he was 56 years old at the time.
Rebetiko and Laiko musicians and composers Markos Vamvakaris and Vassilis Tsitsanis also went to war. Tsitsanis entrusted his buzuki instrument with his mother and promised to return to take it back.
Tumblr media
Painter Yannis Tsaruhis also fought in the Albanian frontline (Italy invaded Albania and then marched from Albania into Greece, Greece halted them there and then counterattacked, pushing the Italian forces back, which is why a lot of the war during 1940-1941 took place in the Albanian mountains). Tsaruhis heard that a soldier had a vision of Virgin Mary. He immediatedly made this religious icon, using a kipper can as a canvas and he named it "Η Παναγιά της Νίκης" (i panayá tis níkis, the Blessed Virgin of Victory). The paint had not even dried before a rumour was spread in the camp that the icon was supposedly miraculous.
Tumblr media
Comedian Dinos Iliópulos, was a Greek of Alexandria, born and raised in Egypt. He completed his millitary service in Greece, even though he was an expat , so it was entirely optional for him. He had returned to his home in Egypt for just one day after finishing his service, when he heard of the bad news. He left immediately, returned to Greece and joined the army.
Tumblr media
Lambros Konstandaras (centered in the left picture): the great actor volunteered to join the army and fought in the frontline. At some point he was severely injured in the head and the hip. He was rescued by the aforementioned poet Odysseus Elytis! After his recovery, he insisted on returning to the battlefield, but he was prevented from doing this. He was suffering from his wounds for the rest of his life, although his vibrant charisma and talent in cinema and theatre never allowed anyone to see this.
Kostas Hatzichristos (right picture): the hysterical comedian originally dreamed of a military profession, so when the war broke out, he joined the army and fought passionately. However, his days in the army were crazy. He was in the northern front and soon his legs developed frostbite. At some point he was sent to serve in a military hospital. Next to it was a cafe owned by an Albanian man and his sister Orhana. Hatzichristos, a notorious womanizer, fancied Orhana and provided supplies to her constantly and made her other favours as well. At some point Orhana disappeared. Hatzichristos found out she was collaborating with the Italians and was giving them all the supplies he was providing her! He became the target of a lot of mockery in the Greek camp. He was moved to regiments on the rear and then he had a lieutenant who just did.not.like.him and bullied him constantly. Once, Hatzichristos stumbled upon Italian soldiers trying to flee during his patrol. The lieutenant screamed at him to shoot them but Hatzichristos saw how young they were and how they were begging for mercy by crying out “Fratello, fratello” (brother in Italian) and felt sorry for them. He did not obey the lieutenant's order. The lieutenant was furious. Hatzichristos fetched them in front of him and said: "You kill them, since you are the tough guy". Hatzichristos always had a way to deliver lines and the lieutenant broke in laughter. He was so amused that he agreed to spare the lives of the Italians. He knew that an Italian regiment would pass from that point in a few hours, so they tied the two Italians in a tree, placed a little canned food next to them and left them there to be found by their own people once they passed.
Tumblr media
Famous movie and theatre actor Dionysis Papayannópulos participated in important battles in extreme conditions in the mountains. He said that the battles lasted so long that when they ran out of bullets, they would keep fighting with sticks and stones. During the Axis occupation of Greece, Papayannópulos resumed his job as an actor in the theatre. One night, Max Merten, the Kriegsverwaltungsrat of the occupational forces in Thessaloniki, attempted to meet Papayannopulos at his dressing room in order to congratulate him on his performance. The actor refused to open the door and receive him. Merten was responsible for the deportation of the 50,000 Jews of Thessaloniki.
Tumblr media
The great theatre actor Manos Katrakis (center) fought in the frontline and saw his commander commit suicide before his eyes when they were caught and disarmed by the enemy.

War: Chapter 3 of Data’s Backstory
(WARNING: This chapter has a graphic description of death and the horrors of war, please read at your own risk)
Data hadn’t found many things to hate in their short life, only the rough sound of their gears spinning, their mother’s gasps as she struggled to go up the stairs of her workshop, and war. They hated the war. It was loud, and frightening, and mud got into their circuits.
But the worst thing about the war was the fact that their mother was there, enlisted to fight because of the tiny ‘M’ on her birth certificate. A tiny, meaningless letter which put her in harm’s way. And they weren’t even allowed to sleep in the same quarters as her! Forced to sleep with the other fellow robots, the very inspirations for Data’s own creation, yet they didn’t feel like talking to their automaton cousins, only watching silently out the window.
Then, the very worst part of war came, whilst watching just out of the trenches at no-mans-land, they saw a familiar tangle of hair. Mother
They ignored their orders to stop, running out of the trench into enemy fire, scooping their mother into their arms gently, holding them close to their chest. Her face was a still mask of horror and pain, her chest soaked in blood that could have only been her own, blood that was no longer flowing. They held their mother close, the scientist, their dearest Annabelle, ignoring the whistle, the shout and only looking up to see the missile hurtling towards them. Data did nothing, except fling themselves over their mother’s body, trying to protect her from more harm.
It was all futile in the end.
And The Jon watched an arm fly past his optics, an arm that had a golden hue.
