Okay but like. A thought

Turians start their compulsory military service at fifteen, and they're not allowed to leave military service until they're thirty*

That means that, aside from a minority of early bloomers, they spend the horniest, most hormonal period of their lives in the army. All of them. No exceptions.

So like. There is no way Shepard is the first time Garrus has crushed on a superior officer. Having the hots for your CO and having your Yearning™ subvocals accidentally announce it to your entire unit is practically a rite of passage in Awkward Turian Puberty. It's expected, and forgivable...for a teenager who can't keep his dick behind his plates for longer than five minutes, because he's realising for the very first time that Girls Exist.

Anyway. Garrus who's absolutely dying of cringe for like the whole of ME1 and most of ME2 because he's the wrong side of 25 and still getting inappropriate crushes on authority figures and she's human and they have so many weird little fingers, like fucked-up pyjaks, what is wrong with him? And it's getting a bit ridiculous now anyway like this is the kind of lesson he should've learned when he was nineteen and hit on his pretty, older squad leader and she laughed in his face, but apparently not - and it's so juvenile and even without Wrex around to laugh at him he's - wait hold on Shepard what do you mean blow off steam?

Gimme more turian culture. Gimme decorations like piercings in the side fringe or feathers from animals on Palaveni braided in-between the blades. Colorful colony tattoos if it's just the pattern that matters and not the color. More clothes that drape and emphasize parts that turians find attractive like the hips and waist. Give me even more insight into their language and what the sub-vocals mean to them. More turian art and music and folklore that doesn't focus on their military service.

I dunno I just want to know more things about the space raptor-cats along the lines of what we learn about the quarians, krogan, and asari.

Mass Effect Turian Headcanon:

Turians naturally change sex if too many of one sex are kept together. This made sex equality greatly favoured when their civilisation was developing because the process isn't pleasant (hormonal changes never are) and could be easily avoided by just encouraging a mix of different sexes in all areas of society.

In the modern day the process can easily be prevented or reversed in early stages through synthetic hormones which has relaxed the necessity of it but most turians still prefer working with mixed groups.

Some turians use the synthetic hormones to intentionally trigger the process when they wish to change sexes.

Chakwas had some hormones in stock on the Normandy because Garrus was on his own, which meant it could have been an issue if they had ever picked up more male turians for an extended period of time.

Cant sleep bc im thinking about Mass Effect Species Gender Headcanons

Asari, while "monogender" are established in Andromeda to sometimes prefer gendered or nonbinary pronouns (she, he, they, etc). I think the Asari languages make it very easy to slot pronouns from other languages into it, on top of having many pronouns to choose from. Many Asari are fluid in what pronouns they use, but in their writing, pronouns are chosen rather deliberately to establish mood, tone, or how a character is supposed to be viewed, which is often lost in translation. (I'm thinking like how Japanese has Boku vs Ore for boys)

Quarian culture has 4 genders, Male, Female, Bigender (both,) and None. The way one styles their suit cloth can give you an idea as to what their gender is, but pronouns are usually exchanged with names regardless. Quarian genders aren't put on record till after they return from Pilgrimage.

Turian society being so focused on military standing makes gender roles kind of irrelevant, but they do view male and female as distinct. They don't really have gendered facilities like bathrooms, however. Being trans is NBD since everything is co-ed anyway. Being intersex is rare but it tends to happen visibly, like bilateral gynandromorph birds. Their fringes will be much shorter on one side, with a longer mandible like a female turian, while the other has a longer fringe and shorter mandible. Coloration may also be visibly different.

Salarians don't really care about gender but also care about it A LOT, mostly because of how they reproduce. Salarians can pick any gender or lack of gender they want, but their birth sex is really all that matters in the end for them, because of reproduction contracts and the like 10 male to 1 female birthrates.

Sex and gender matters a lot for Krogan, and they don't really have a sense of nonbinary genders. Maybe before the genophage their philosophers might have argued that soldier, warlord, shaman, and mother, and other titles were all different genders, but it doesn't really matter now, post genophage.

Volus have a few genders but that tends to be very personal information and isnt shared outside of close relationships. They don't particularly care about the pronouns other Clans use for them either.

Hanar are a hermaphroditic species and tend to not care about pronouns.

Elcor gender is largely body language based.

Vorcha are also a monogendered race but no one likes to talk about it.

Dunno what asari have, and they seem to have *some* sort of recreational crotch-based sex organs, but… dick? Maybe? Maybe not.

Pretty sure salarians do the external fertilisation frog thing (when they bother reproducing sexually at all… the males don’t have fathers at all, remember, like a bee. Mordin is immune to SR2 daddy issues as he has no daddy)

Okay so I know "turians purr" is like. Old hat and basically accepted fanon at this point, because they are Space Kitty People, but.

I like the idea that it's not necessarily a direct translation to "this turian is happy".

Like a human smile, it's all wrapped up with other body language and can mean a dozen things - a smile can be sad, or uncomfortable, or pleased, or passive aggressive, or threatening.

ME1 Shepard is paying close attention to her new alien crewmembers, so she figures out fairly quickly that purring suggests satisfaction or contentment more than outright joy - he purrs when she tells him "Good shooting today, Vakarian," or when he's finished a good meal or when he's cleaning his rifle, which she knows he finds relaxing. She knows Nihlus made a purring noise when she gave a response he approved of.

ME2 Shepard finds out that turians also purr as comfort, similar to the human shhh. When she goes to the battery after Aratoht and feels her face crumple and bursts into tears because 300,000 innocent people are dead and she couldn't save them, he wraps his arms around her and rests his chin on her head and rumbles into her hair until she calms down. And it's not just to comfort others - she hears him purring when he's semi-conscious in the medbay after he takes a rocket to the jaw, and when she alerts Mordin he helpfully clarifies for her that she doesn't need to be alarmed - Garrus is hurt, and scared, and he's self-soothing. He also purrs when he's floundering trying to flirt with her in her cabin before the collector base, and her translator chip interprets it as nervous laughter.

Like. It's a social behaviour. It's evolved out of "I am content" in some ancient Palaveni animal into basic comfort ("you are expressing distressed body language, so I am demonstrating calm, contented body language to reassure you there is no threat here") in primitive turians and into a dozen multifaceted social cues in an advanced species with a complicated culture that calls for formality and politeness.

((I need to share! The kid just gave me the best idea. Mav is shorter and a little stockier than most other turians, he's also a particular shade of grey, and so were both his parents. So are most of the other turians native to Carthaan.

Loki just provided me with some slap/dash science as for why.

Carthaan is a cold planet with harsh winters that nearly contend with the climate of Noveria. Turians don't store body fat the way that we do. I seem to recall from somewhere they have way less body fat and that's why they can't swim either. Anyway. Carthaan born turians -and turians native to other cold worlds- tend to be on the small and stocky side and a rather dark grey in plating to retain body heat. That's it, that's the idea.

By contrast, Cato is dark plated because he's -usually- born on Parthia. A tropical world that's nearly 95% ocean and orbits two suns as well as two moons. Those storms are a bitch. Turians from tropical worlds like this tend to be willowy if not outright tall, dark plated to reflect back the heat of the sun(s) and are often long-lived. Despite living on planets most sane absolutely-non-aquatic species would call death-worlds.

I've reached a small wrench with Crass though. He's so damned big and tall lol. He's from the jungle world of Invictus. Commonly called the planet of teeth by everyone unfortunate enough to set foot there. He's sand colored, but not tropical beach sand color. New England beach sand color. Vaguely grey, vaguely beige. I think it would help turians native to these sorts of planets blend into the foliage.
