everytime a weird tory monarchist is like [X] hobby isn't manly/‘kingly’, you can remind them that henry viii did it because he probably did (he did almost everything...except fucking another man. probably.)

hey, i find your posts about historical fiction pretty interesting, do you have any recs?
anon this is the most beautiful and validating ask i have ever received. absolutely of COURSE I have recs. not gonna be a lot of deep cuts on this list but i love all of these books and occasionally books do receive awards and acclaim because they are good. in no particular order:
the cromwell trilogy by hilary mantel. of course i gotta start with the og. it’s 40 million pages on the tudor court and the english reformation and it will fundamentally change you as a person and a reader
(sub rec: the giant, o’brien by hilary mantel. in many ways a much shorter thematic companion to the cromwell trilogy imo. about stories and death and embodiment and the historical record and 18th century ireland. if you loved the trilogy, read this to experience hils playing with her own theories about historical fiction. if you are intimidated by the trilogy, read this first to get a taste of her prose style and her approach to the genre. either way please read all four novels ok thanks)
lincoln in the bardo by george saunders. the book that got me back into historical fiction as an adult. american history as narrated by a bunch of weird ghosts and abraham lincoln. chaotic and lovely and morbid.
the everlasting by katy simpson smith. rome through the ages as seen by a medici princess, a gay death-obsessed monk, and an early christian martyr. really historically grounded writing about religion and power, and also narrated with interjections from god’s ex boyfriend satan. smith is a trained historian and her prose slaps
(sub rec: free men by katy simpson smith. only a sub rec bc i read it a long time ago and my memory of it is imperfect but i loved it in 2017ish. about three men in the woods in the post revolutionary american south and by virtue of being about masculinity is actually about women. smith did her phd in antebellum southern femininity and motherhood iirc so this book is LOCKED IN to those perspectives)
a mercy by toni morrison. explores the dissolution of a household in 17th century new york. very different place and time than a lot of morrison’s bigger novels but just as mean and beautiful
(sub rec: beloved by toni morrison. a sub rec bc im pretty sure everyone has already read beloved but perhaps consider reading it again? histfic ghost story abt how the past is always here and will never go away and loves you and hates you and is trying to kill you)
an artist of the floating world by kazuo ishiguro. my bestie sir kazuo likes to explore the past through characters who, for one reason or another (amnesia, dementia, being a little baby robot who was just born yesterday, etc), are unable to fully comprehend their surroundings. this one is about post-wwii japan as understood by an elderly supporter of the imperial regime
(sub rec: remains of the day by kazuo ishiguro. same conceit as above except this time the elderly collaborator is incapable of reckoning with the slow collapse of the system that sheltered him due to britishness.)
the pull of the stars by emma donoghue. donoghue is a strong researcher and all of her novels are super grounded in their place and time without getting so caught up in it they turn into textbooks. i picked this one bc it is a wwi lesbian love story about childbirth that made me cry so hard i almost threw up on a plane but i recommend all her histfic published after 2010. before that she was still finding her stride.
days without end by sebastian barry. this one is hard to read and to rec bc it is about the us army’s policy of genocide against native americans in the 19th century west as told by an irish cavalry soldier. it is grim and violent and miserable and also so beautiful it makes me cry about every three pages. first time i read it i was genuinely inconsolable for two days afterwards.
this post is long as hell so HONORABLE MENTIONS: the amazing adventures of kavalier & clay by michael chabon, the western wind by samantha harvey, golden hill by frances spufford, barkskins by annie proulx, postcards by annie proulx, most things annie proulx has written but i feel like i talk about her too much, the view from castle rock by alice munro, the name of the rose by umberto eco, tracks by louise erdrich

“The Church of England has issued a statement saying they will not allow same sex couples to marry in their church, and that marriage is between one man and one woman for life”
Putting the homophobia in 2023 aside for a sec, what kind of drugs are the Church of England on??
Besties you literally only exist bc the Andrew Tate of Tudor times wanted to divorce his wife!! Your basic principles of existence are based on being allowed to discontinue a marriage!!

HAVE MORE GHOSTS MODERN AU
The Captain owns a dog and a cat with Havers!
Havers owns a flower shop (because fuck u I wanted a flower shop au at one point. He fucking gardens okay???)
Thomas and Kitty are like the besties siblings ever
Thomas sometimes for fun asks Kitty to act out his poems and Kitty has so much fun with the interpretation
Kitty does TikToks on the street sometimes and if he sees any of the residents she will try to drag them or include them in the TikTok😭
During the Captain’s breaks, he’ll go to Havers’ shop and eat lunch there and just chill, if he’s not there he’s with Fanny and Pat, having lunch
Julian frequents the bar and brings Robin over a lot and they be chaotic bisexuals and pansexuals respectively
Mary had a kitchen incident that nearly burnt down hers and Annie’s house ;;;;
Humphrey and the Captain would come in as guest speakers at the local school to talk about history :’)
The Captain would talk about 20th century-present (but he absolutely loves presenting about the early 20th century)
Humphrey would present Tudor to Stuart
Robin would also come in purely for biology talks and do history talks too but only he does prehistoric history :’)
The small town sits beside a National Park that has petroglyphs and cave systems. So Robin works there!
THE PLAGUE VICTIMS ARE AROUND TOO
THEY’RE LITERALLY ALL JUST VIBING
LIKE THEY ALL LIVE ALONG ONE BLOCK 😭😭😭
the captain's side hustle is being a fucking wedding planner oh my days-

10 Characters, 10 Fandoms!
Hey besties! I was tagged by the lovely @arcielee and now you guys are about to find out how weird (and bi) I really am.
THE Prince Aemond Targaryen, of course. This man has us all by the ovaries.
Tumblr media
2. Anne Boleyn in the Tudors. Fun fact, Nat's portrayal of Anne made me realize I like women. She's that good. I would die for her. I would kill for her. I would let her top me.
Tumblr media
3. Loki/Thomas Sharpe from Crimson Peak. They're played by the same actor soo I'm counting them as one. Loopholes. Tom Hiddleston is a sexy mf, he is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. Yeah yeah the first Suicide Squad was bleh but Margot's HQ is an absolute queen. Stream Birds of Prey.
Tumblr media
5. Prince Zuko. I really have a thing for emo princes with daddy issues and a scarred eye, it would seem. This guy was one of my first ever TV crushes and to this day seeing him unlocks the fangirl squeeing of a 13-year-old girl.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He gets two gifs because he has a special place in my heart (and I want to push my Zutara agenda #zutarasupremecy).
6. Speaking of first TV crushes, it'd be a lie to not include Draco Malfoy. I hate Rowling with a burning passion and hope she falls off a cliff, but Tom Felton's portrayal of Malfoy had 14-year-old me losing her damn mind, so I'll include him for nostalgia. I just love a rich bad boy.
Tumblr media
7. L Lawliet from Death Note. Oh look, another rich asshole. God, I have a type, and it's embarrassing. What can I say? His bad posture and eye bags that are darker than the places my mind goes at 2 a.m. have captivated me. And his spikey hair. Gotta love an anime boy with spikey hair.
Tumblr media
8. Tommy Shelby from Peaky Blinders. We're moving from bad boys to straight up gangsters, because of course we are. He may be a literal crime lord, but that accent and those baby blues got me feelin' some kinda way.
Tumblr media
9. Elizabeth of York from the White Princess. She is beauty, she is grace, I'd let her punch me in the face.
Tumblr media
10. Daenerys Targaryen -we started with a Targaryen, so it seems only fitting to end with a Targaryen. Dany my beloved, my darling, my Queen. They did you so dirty.
Tumblr media
Not sure who all's done this yet but I'm gonna go ahead and tag my lovelies @ewanmitchellcrumbs @em-writes-stuff-sometimes @bottlesandbarricades @aemxnd @eyelinerandcigarettes @lya-dustin and any other mutuals and followers who want to participate.

I am reminded that I haven’t written Mary Boleyn and Thomas Cromwell (who is doodling ‘Mr Anne Henry Boleyn-Tudor’ in his notebook thank you @cinemaocd <3) in the OT3 verse and that needs to happen because OT3 verse Mary is a lesbian (who loves her husband) and she and Thomas are Besties.

i've literally shushed my bestie saying "shut up, otherwise i'll love you!" because her geeky side was showing and we started talking (aka obsessing) over the wars of the roses and the tudor genealogical tree while pacing back and forth round and round through the suburbs

Empresses in the Palace ep 20 - 21
I've consumed too many chinese dramas and novels not to expect that a triumphant general celebrated throughout the nation is gonna eventually end up headless. Emperors who rose to power by quelling a rebellion are not a big fan of competition.
But for now, Hua Fei is at the height of her power. She's not even needing to scheme & throw petulant tantrums much, which is unfortunately reducing her hottness quotient for me.
And with all of the toxicity.... Real sibling love, who truly seem to like and support each other? That's so nice for them fr. Amid all the dirt & layers of masks in the palace, it's a bit refreshing that Hua Fei and General Nian have each other's backs. Her family has been funding her to be glamorous in the palace and (from what we can tell) aren't hounding her & guilting her & implying she's worthless for not having a baby yet. Almost wholesome compared to the typical noble family members I see in dramas.
Ling Rong and Zhen Huan in their besties era. I don't ship them, but ok girls have a good time. 👌
Baby concubine in waiting Chun has such a strange life. Just hanging out in the palace, playing with the servants, but she's 16 now. danger 🚨danger 🚨
Such a brilliant move to juxtapose a domestic, charming scene of the emperor and Zhen Huan play-acting as a typical married couple with darling Chun'er bursting into the room for added cheer. And then cutting to still childish Chun being carried to the emperor's bed. Masterful followup to that sweet family-like scene that reveals the rot beneath. As childishly innocent and cossetted as she is... She is doomed to be just more meat for the machine.
Ep 22
Death flags right & left for my darling Hua Fei.
Tumblr media
Prince Guo: "Unobtrusiveness and self-restraint is the way to survive in His Majesty's court."
If General Nian is as fantastic in battle as he is in digging his own grave, no wonder the whole nation has been kissing his ass.
It's opera night in the harem and none of these bitches knows how watch a drama. Timed comments ON but can't hold a candle to Viki posters. Girls, this is your first opportunity in 2 years to enjoy something that's not getting banged by a fugly monarch, poetry duels, or flower & tea appreciation. Maybe stop grandstanding and enjoy it?
Ep 23
PLAGUE !!!
I've watched The Tudors. I'm ready for shit to go down.
Oh look, my beloved Hua Fei is already scheming to infect her enemies. Honestly shocked that new baby momma what's her face hasn't been given toxic incense yet.
Ling Rong irriates the fuck out of me these days. 2 things that I can't stand: [1] UGH ambitious people in the workplace who don't put themselves out there and do the work to advance, but then are bitter & resentful when their proactive peers succeed (LR is so entitled, she wants to sit back and be rewarded; resents not having everything ZH has when her friend is grinding full-time to protect herself and their lil faction) [2] misrepresents friends' actions, interpreting everything in the light that they are using or mocking her, when the friend is just going about their day to day and isn't intending anything malicious.
Zhen Huan conveniently capturing & presenting key witness Liu Ben wasn't satisfying. I understand that, ok, maybe her runners could catch him now because there are limited places to avoid the plague. But it doesn't feel right. The first time in the drama that things felt too easy to escape a huge dilemma. Mei Zihuang has the plague! She's secluded and no doctors will see her! 😱 .... oh, ZH now a dozen episodes later happens to have found some flimsy evidence to release her. (seriously, she just brings in a villian to say stuff. he could be bribed? lying to protect a loved one? any number of things?) (this goes back to the whole theory, 'emperor never REALLY thought Mei'er was faking, he just didn't care and it was easier to go with it)
And then Hua Fei gets out of HER predicament also with hilarious convenience. Oh, it just so happens that her stooges found a plague cure? Right now? 🤔

Bestie why did you link that post about historical inaccuracies in The Tudors, now I learned that this fucking show has Margaret of Navarre sleeping with Henry VIII. of all people and my day is ruined.
(For real, tho. For a while now I've known they have done something heinous with Margaret of Navarre, and now I know. :( Well, at least I know now!)
Considering how often I do my best to power wash the memory of that from my brain (Margaret of Navarre, I'm so sorry this was my introductory lesson to you) I really can't blame you, despite how I just cackled reading this.
The one I always wind up flinching over tends to be George's treatment of Jane on their, erm, "wedding night". I really don't get why that needed to be included at all.
