The Tails of the Umbrella Aquarium

Vanya had a lonely childhood. Living in a house of curiosities, with no siblings and a cold scientist for a father saw to that.

She was only allowed to see the tanks once she turned 12. To see what the public had paid their money to come look at for the past year.

Specimens One to Six.

They have their own tanks, and sometimes, when they press their webbed hands against the glass to match hers, she wonders if they are as lonely as she is. So, after dark, she sneaks down to read them stories, and wishes them goodnight.

Klaus loves his lake. He does.

Really.

But sometimes it feels unbearably small.

Even at his fastest it takes him several minutes to swim a lap. And it’s deep. Deep enough to dive amongst the tall underwater forest, when the humans come over the top in their boats. He’ll drift amongst the kelp, peering up at them, listening to their faint voices and laughter.

But.

But.

There’s nobody else around. He’s the only one of his kind, carried downstream by floods when he was but a small fry, unable to battle the currents.

It’s lonely.

He just wants a friend.

When storms roll in, Luther climbs across the rocks to feel the wave’s spray. He stares out, salt on his lips, thinking longingly of his siblings.

How are they?

Has Five returned from the southern ice (Antarctica, the land-walkers call it)? Is Klaus okay without their shoal-mate Ben? Does Diego still hunt with sharpened shells and shark’s teeth? What about Vanya, does she still sing? And Allison, does she still miss him, now she has little Claire?

He wonders why his father sent him on this observation mission, to watch from above the waves, not below.

To be all alone.

She had never understood the question, ‘Are you happy?’ To her, happiness was an emotion, as quickly fleeting as fog that was burnt off by the morning sun. It wasn’t a state of being, not something that lasted beyond a few fragile moments. Happiness, she once thought, was a rare thing, a drizzle of honey to help one swallow the bitterness and empty ache that comprised the majority of existence.

But now, she understood. Ecstatic joy still surged and faded through her days, but when the wave did crest and break, it did not bash her mercilessly against jutting boulders, tearing her tender flesh to ribbons. It washed gently against a shore of sun-warmed sand and smooth stones, turning from something all encompassing and over-powering into a gentle tide that pooled around her feet, warm and smelling of fresh salt. Sissy’s happiness was like the afternoon light that streamed through the western window, gold and soft. It was steady and quiet and she could sit in her chair for hours, letting it collect in her lap until she was heady and tired and completely content.

Ben remembers life before the tank.

Before confinement in dead salt water, where he is forced to curl his eight tentacles and twist tightly on himself to move. Remembers being flexible for the joy and for hunting, not simply to exist within this small space.

To be free to snatch his prey, rather than on display to humans. Annoying, loud humans who stare and press hands to the clear walls, a sea of ever-changing faces. Before being dropped fish to eat, and fearing the lightning that comes to shock his anger into darkness.

Before becoming “The Horror” of Umbrella Circus.
