You’re thrown harshly onto the ground already feeling the bruises forming around your knees. The black bag over your head is taken off and your eyes instantly adjust to your surroundings. There’s not much to look at. The room was bare besides a few rotting boxes and dilapidated tables. The windows are all boarded up only letting a few rays of light in.
Loki is shortly dropped right in front of you. A permanent scowl on his face as they removed the bag off his head. It goes away when his eyes land on you.
“Are you ok?”
You nod and look around trying to make sense of what’s going on.
Yes, you were outnumbered but you were a highly trained Avenger and Loki’s an Asgardian god. It shouldn’t have been that easy for them to take both of you. Something felt off about the entire thing.
“We were just supposed to take the book,” you whisper to him as you try to break the seal around your wrists . “Not get taken ourselves.”
“I know,” Loki agrees. “Things aren’t adding up.”
“We need to find the book and get the hell out of here…”
You stop talking when the door creaks open and an elder man appears dragging a chair into the middle of the room. That’s not what renders you silent. It’s the familiar leather-bound book that he holds in his hands.
“My great-grandfather told me many stories about the glorious gods of Asgard and the relics they would gift humankind to bestow an ounce of their power,” the man begins as he takes a seat. “So imagine my great excitement when I heard rumors of a book of Asgardian descent that beheld the ancient power of Truth.”
Knowing where this was heading, you make yourself a bit comfortable trying desperately to get the ties off your wrists.
“I searched and I killed and I bled until I finally found it and the moment… the moment I was about to be gifted with the powers of the gods themselves, you steal it away from me.”
The threat is obvious and so Loki quickly took to the offensive. His hands begin to glow but the power sputters out. He scowls and so you try to bring forth your power but are met with the same results.
“What the hel?” he mutters.
“Oh, well… I was about to get to that actually,” the man answers. “Now, I expected the book to be useless without its main source of power but I was wrong. The Book of Veritas still works just with a few kinks of course but works nonetheless.”
He pries the book open and a glowing green light begins to emit from the pages.
“Ask a question and the book will decide to answer it with the truth,” he explains. “Wasn’t getting much from it until I started to ask about you.”
The man then flips the book towards the both of you revealing moving sigils and insignia. You can’t make sense of it but Loki tenses up at the sight of it.
“That can’t be…”
The old man chuckles and turns the book back to him.
“Seems like the Book of Veritas has a bone to pick with the God of Mischief and was willing to dispel many secrets in order to enact overdue revenge. The magic disabling circle is useful when dealing with matters that are completely out of my mortal hands.”
The old man points up and you frown when you realize the spray painted sigils on the ceiling.
“The book of Veritas gave me an incantation that will extract the power for me to take. I’ve been waiting for weeks to make use of this spell and you presented each other so easily,” he states. “All I need now is…”
The old man begins to cough and is quick to yell through the door for a glass of water. With him distracted, you glance over at Loki.
“We’ve got a few minutes,” you whisper to him. “He’s midway through his villain speech.”
“Villain speech?”
“Yeah, you know… The one where they tell you who they are, they’re tragic backstory, and every detail of their evil plan,” you explain. “Ultron, Pierce… even you made one.”
Loki scowls as he recalls it.
“I didn’t sound that pretentious when I tried to take over Midgard, did I?”
“I can’t really lie to you so let’s just focus on the problem at hand. We need to get out of here,” you answer. “He’ll tire himself out eventually and most likely in time for the team to find us or when we get out ourselves.”
“How often does this happen to you?”
“A lot more than you would think but it is a good way to get information,” you sigh as you finally twist your wrists into the right angle allowing you to snap them off with your newfound strength. “Huh, I guess we’ll be getting out of this one.”
Loki’s glad to hear that and is ready for your assistance but it never arrives. He notices too late that the old man finally received his glass of water alongside a dozen of his armed men.
“Now where was I?”
You and Loki settle down again knowing it was far from over and a thousand times worse.
“A name?” you offer up. “Maybe your plans once you take my powers?”
“Your powers?” he dryly laughs out. “Oh no, I have far exceeded whatever trivial powers the book had to offer. If I’m receiving anything it’s going to be from a god himself. Besides, having the power of Lies is more up my alley.”
“What-” you stammer out. This wasn’t what you were expecting at all. “What’s uh- What’s going to happen when you take his power?”
“I don’t know and I don’t care.”
Lie.
“You do know,” you state. “And you do care.”
You look over at Loki who’s oddly silent. His usual mask is up and you are aware then that the answer everyone is avoiding is the one that is the most obvious.
“If you take his powers, you both might die.”
The old man doesn’t bother with a response and instead he takes the book up again. He flips it open and searches for the incantation.
“All that matters is that the Book of Veritas will get it’s overdue revenge and I will receive what is rightfully mine.”
“Even at the cost of your life?”
“My life is already at its end,” he answers. “If I can be a god for even a second then I’m going to relish in it.”
“Loki?” you whisper in fear.
He glances at you and his mask slips away.
“I made a vow to you, remember?” he responds. “I would never allow you to come to any harm.”
“Loki!”
He ignores your shout and simply begins to kneel before the old man.
“Let’s begin, shall we?”

It had been a very long time since Loki felt this way. A cold numbness that didn’t pertain to his Jotun nature. He’s been seated in the same lounge seat in the corner of his room for countless days now. Frozen in place and unwilling to move.
Loki stared out at the expansive window and watched the same scene over and over again.
Humanity living on.
So simple. So small. So… mortal.
How could you possibly yearn for this? How could you possibly mourn the loss of a short existence?
The answer slowly dawns on him.
It is not the loss of your human mortality. It is the loss that you will endure due to the human mortality of others.
He had taken that away from you without knowing. Loki thought only of himself and his deal, disregarding you entirely.
If Loki had just thought of you for once he would have realized this possibility sooner. The power of Veritas was clever and it would do anything to survive such as turning a mortal into a God.
You had sacrificed so much already, endured things no one should have to, and then this revelation came crashing down too.
Loki wished he could ignore it all. You no longer pertained to him anymore. He will soon receive his freedom and you were out of his life for good. Soulmate or not, he had achieved what he desired in the end.
Except he still remained frozen, numb, and at a loss.
Something had shifted and Loki felt off-balanced.
He would give anything for things to return to normal but he couldn’t even remember what normal was anymore.
Loki was falling deep into a dark spiral. An all too familiar darkness embracing him and refusing to let him go.
“Loki?”
A glowing form stands before him and it takes a second for Loki to recognize his own mother.
“My son…” she smiles but it fades away at the sight of him. “What’s happened?”
Concern is pooling in her eyes and Loki must really be slipping if she realized this quickly how much of a mess he has become.
“Nothing’s wrong,” he answers too quickly. “What… What are you doing here?”
“Thor prayed to me,” she answers. “He’s concerned for you.”
Loki remains silent, unable to spin a lie to drive her away.
“Loki,” Frigga calls out to him in worry. “What has happened?”
“Nothing out of the norm,” Loki answers, trying to be indifferent. “I caused mischief and chaos and revealed hidden truths.”
“And?”
“And that’s it,” he snaps, finally removing himself from his seat. “Nothing more, nothing less.”
Frigga remains silent for a second and manages to read between the lines.
“The mortal,” she pinpoints. “Your potential soulmate.”
“Not my soulmate,” Loki corrects. “And not a mortal anymore.”
“What?”
“She’s evolving. The power of Veritas seems to have forced a more appropriate vessel out of her. The siphons will soon no longer be needed which then confirms what I was hoping for: she is not my soulmate.”
Frigga is silenced once more but Loki can see her mind at work.
“Well good,” she states. “Saves that girl from heartbreak and you from weakness, right?”
Loki hides his surprise at her words and hums in agreement.
“Yes, she… she is no longer a threat to me.”
“Threat,” Frigga repeats. “Such a heavy word. I didn’t realize a mere mortal could ever be a threat to you.”
“Well, she was for a while,” Loki admits. “Could see right through me. Read me in a way that you’ve only been able to. Cared too much and…”
Loki hesitates and Frigga clings to that.
“And what?”
Loki takes a deep breath and sighs, “And loved too deeply.”
“Love,” Frigga whispers. “Now that’s also quite a heavy word.”
Loki doesn’t respond so she continues.
“I guess I spoke too soon. Seems like her heart was not spared in this matter,” Frigga states. “And neither was yours.”
Loki is quick to turn to her.
“I do not care for her.”
“Don’t lie, Loki. I wouldn’t be here if you weren’t so affected by all of it.”
“I am not affected!”
“Your anger speaks otherwise.”
Loki’s driven to silence once more and Frigga takes her chance.
“You hurt her, didn’t you?” she asks knowing very well the answer. “She scared you because she made you feel and so you drove her away hoping things would go back to normal, but they didn’t. They didn’t and you have no idea why.”
Frigga can see her son hurting but she has to continue.
“You think love as a weakness, Loki, but if only you could realize how much strength it could actually bring you if you just allowed it. Someone who will always stand by your side. A caretaker, a lover, and most importantly, a friend.”
Loki stumbles and Frigga steps forward wishing she could hold her son up. He was so wounded and jarred and she wished to heal all his wounds but knew she would come short. There was only one way to save him and it was not by her hand.
“She doesn’t want anything to do with me.”
“Perhaps she feels that way now, but just like you, she will realize what you have,” Frigga tells him. “A second chance will appear on the horizon. Just be patient.”
Loki doesn’t know what to say but it doesn’t matter as a sharp pain shoots down his spine.
“What in the hel was that?”
Frigga scowls unsure of what he was referring to.
“Something’s wrong,” Loki stammers out as he tries to make sense of it himself. “I feel like I’m being ripped apart.”
Realization hits her instantly at Loki’s explanation.
“Soulmate or not, you and her are connected by a very delicate power that hinges solely on balance. You’ve both been tethering at the edge and I fear she has fallen off it. If it is what I think it is then she is on the verge of killing herself. Set aside your troubles and help her!”
Loki doesn’t hesitate. He storms out of his room in search of you and he is not the only one. He runs into the entire team at the lobby of Stark’s tower.
“Stay out of this,” Natasha states the moment he locks eyes with her. “You’ve done enough.”
“And so have you,” he answers. “Where is she?”
“She’s gone,” Tony states as he pulls up feed from his security cameras. “Ran out before we had a chance to stop her.”
“Out on the streets is the last place she should be,” Thor remarks. “Not with the power she wields.”
“Or the people who would do anything to take it from her,” Steve adds. “She’s in danger out there.”
There was no point in trying to figure out what drove you over the edge when you were out on the streets losing control over a vast power. It doesn't help that you were a target. One that neither you or Loki had known you were.
Loki moves towards the doors but Tony is quick to intercept him.
“Still on lockdown, Satan,” Tony reminds him as he points down his ankle. “You’re not allowed out there.”
Loki doesn’t say a word as he tries to think of an alternative exit but Stark was right. He was still shackled to the Tower, but your need for him outweighed everything else.
“Very well,” he tells them. “If you won’t allow me out to help her, then I will resort to cold and petty means… and I mean very, very cold and petty.”
“Loki, no!” Thor shouts as he realizes his brother’s intention but it’s too late. Loki pulls in every ounce of his power within him, shattering the illusion spell he always held up. His ivory skin turns blue, eyes turn red, and everything begins to freeze around him.
“What the hell are you doing?” Tony shouts.
“What needs to be done,” he growls.
Ice spreads through the marble floors and encases everything it touches. The magical-disabling monitor wrapped around his ankle is instantly covered in ice and shatters at the rising cold intensity.
Loki doesn’t stop there.
He traps the entire team by casing their legs in ice.
For revenge, but mostly because if anyone was going to get through to you, it could only be him and him alone.
“Don’t worry,” he tells them as he walks past them, ignoring their curses and shouts. “I will bring her back safe and sound.”

Tony, through his hangover, is having too much fun having you blow shit up. You indulge him having expected Loki’s avoidance in your training the following day. You needed the spare time to think and Tony’s spare flying bots are a much needed distraction from the events that happened last night.
“You know,” you shout after another bot crashes to the ground. “Out of everyone in the team, you are the last person I expected to be completely honest with me.”
Tony simply chuckles and shrugs, “I suffered the consequences of being lied to and it didn’t particularly feel good.”
Your eyes drop to the arc reactor and nod in understanding.
“So what Steve was about to lie to you?” Tony continues. “Knowing him, he was probably doing it to protect you and your feelings.”
“I can handle the truth, Tony,” you exclaim. “I have to now because I have no other choice. So if Steve knew this why would he even try?”
Tony responds by sending another bot up in the air and you shoot it down instantly.
“You didn’t even…” Tony marvels. “You didn’t even have to look at it when you…”
“Yeah, I’ve gotten extremely good at my aiming.”
You plop down onto the ground and let out a sigh. Tony was out of flying bots and you were out of juice… for now.
“So what now?” you ask.
Tony takes a deep breath and offers you a tired smile.
“Everyone lies,” Tony states. “To themselves. To others. We lie to save lives. We lie to save ourselves. We lie about nothing and everything. We lie just for the sake of lying!”
“Where are you going with this, Tony?”
“I don’t know,” Tony resigns. “Just that… People are going to lie to you. People you love and care about are going to lie and it’s going to hurt you more than most because you will always know and we know that you know and that’s just… well, that’s just the circle of life, isn’t it?”
You can’t help but smile at his roundabout explanation of human nature and release the frustration that you were holding onto so tightly.
“Alright, understood, I’ll let it go,” you tell him. “At least for now…”
Tony grins and stands up from his seat.
“So, breakfast?”
“We’re deep into the afternoon,” you point out.
“And?” Tony asks. “Who made up the rule that we can’t have pancakes for lunch?”
Loki doesn’t particularly enjoy the task that awaited him. He had no idea of where to begin and how to come across the answers he was seeking without alerting anyone of what he was doing. It didn’t help him that your ability could catch his every lie and hidden misdeeds making Loki very aware that he had to be careful.
So if Loki was unable to lie and trick you then all that was left for him to do was lie and trick the people around you.
“Where does the Widow reside at this time?”
Thor looks up at his brother and shrugs, “I have no idea. Perhaps ask the magical sky lady.”
“Right,” Loki sighs, ignoring his brother and turning towards the ceiling. “Friday, where can I find the Widow?”
“Conference room on Level 32.”
Loki doesn’t bother to wish Thor goodbye as he takes his leave. It doesn’t take him long to find the red-headed spy. She was filtering through some files on her own when Loki came in.
“Good afternoon…”
Natasha gave him a pointed glare in response.
“I require your assistance.”
“No, you don’t,” Natasha states as she closes her file to look at him. “You’re here to bother me.”
“Well, I guess you’re not wrong,” Loki states, taking the seat across from her. “The questions I ask will most certainly annoy you.”
Natasha lets out a heavy breath and leans back in her chair.
“You can ask all you want but I’m not required to give you an answer.”
Loki offers her a sarcastic smile before just jumping into his interrogation.
“Has anything strange ever happened to our mutual friend? Something that can be categorized as magically related.”
Natasha has to fight against the incoming scowl on her face.
“Besides the ancient power of Truth slamming into her and changing everything about her?”
“Obviously, yes.”
“Then no. Everything about her was normal until that life-changing moment.”
“So she had no visions of the future and/or past nor a unique magical moment of raining rose petals?”
“No and no,” Natasha answers, turning back to her file. “Are we done here?”
Loki taps on the table and watches her closely. Her body was tense as she skimmed through the pages of the file.
“Nowhere close to done,” he answers. “You’re hiding something. What are you not telling me about her?”
At that question, Natasha remains silent.
“I don’t want to answer that.”
“And why not?”
“Because I’m already handling it.”
Loki doesn’t care to ask another question which she was just going to avoid answering. He simply takes it upon himself to steal the file away from her hands.
Doctor S.S. Neurosurgeon...
“Why are you looking into a doctor for her?” Loki asks in concern. “What’s wrong with her?”
“As if you care…” Natasha mutters as she steals the file back.
“What’s wrong with her?”
Natasha hesitates but has no other choice but to respond.
“It seems like her anatomy’s evolved,” she tells him. “She drank some Asgardian mead and she walked off like it was nothing. It had no effect on her whatsoever.”
Loki doesn’t know how to respond. He hadn’t expected such a change to ever occur to you.
“And you haven’t told her about this have you?” Loki asks though he already knew the answer. “If she knew, she would be upon me demanding an answer.”
“Steve and I are looking for a cure now,” Natasha explains to him. “We just need you to keep her alive for as long as it takes.”
“There is no cure.”
“Not that you know of,” she states. “You’re not the only one with magical abilities. We already found someone and we can find some more.”
“Call on your doctors and whatever few second-rate magicians you can find but it will just lead you back to me,” Loki tells her. “With this new change, she needs me. She will always need me.”
Natasha can’t help herself but to watch him now. Read the body language and the language he used himself to insert himself in your life. It was something she never expected from Loki and yet there it was; attachment.
It was dangerous.
You had already gone through hell with this new power and now this new change in your body. The last thing you needed was a rebellious Asgardian god who heeded no mind to rules or simple ethics.
“She’s going to be fine without you,” Natasha tells him. “I’ll make sure of it.”
With that final word, Natasha takes up her files and exits the conference room leaving Loki with no new answers but with new questions.

Things are moving too fast for you to even be able to react. You’re suddenly surrounded outside of the spelled circle and the incantations are being bellowed out. Loki is still kneeled and you start to think that it isn’t working until there’s a sudden shift. The air around you feels full of static and then everything finally goes wrong.
“Powers of the sorcerer of lies rise. Take your course across these skies. Allow me to take reign of thee. Settle, settle, settle in me.”
The incantation continues to be repeated and Loki doubles over in pain. You’re quick to release him from his bounds not caring about revealing the slight upper hand that you had managed to get.
“Tell me what to do,” you plead with him. “There has to be something I can do… some counter spell I can say.”
Loki groans in response and shakes his head.
“No…”
“You will die!”
“Better it be me than you,” Loki groans.
“Why are you doing this?” you ask. “We can both come out of this alive if you just help me!”
“Because I-” Loki grits out through his pain. “Because there is no other choice. Only one of us is at risk and only one of us will come out of this alive. I’ve made that choice already if it isn’t obvious.”
The incantation becomes louder and everyone around you begins to chant it too. The insignia above you begins to slowly dissolve and you feel your power trickling back. As that happens the energy in the air is multiplied and Loki’s body begins to change.
He’s turning blue. Frost Giant Blue.
“What’s going on? Why-”
“The spelled circle is trapping my powers so it needs to be dissolved before he can… he can take it. All of my magic is… getting taken. The illusion spell I pull up to cover my real origin… it’s slipping away.”
Hearing this and knowing what you knew now there was only one thing left to do.
Loki was right.
Only one of you was coming out of this and you decided differently.
As the insignia above you began to quickly deteriorate you continued to gain back every ounce of your power while Loki was losing his.
It was now or never.
You close your eyes and open yourself up to everything that was going on around you. Emotions and untold confessions begin to overflow into your mind. It doesn’t take much to feel that overwhelmed sensation once again. You had a better handle at the moment but the result would still be the same.
While everyone was oblivious of what was happening, Loki’s quick to catch on.
“What in the nine realms are you doing?!”
“You said it,” you answer. “There is no other choice.”
Pain is shooting through your entire body but you don’t let it show. You swallow back your pain and continue to let your power take over.
The siphons begin to flare up and like before you drop to your knees. You can no longer stay up right. Every part of your body is humming with power and it’s tearing you apart from the inside.
The gold chains around your hands begin to burn but not as much as the stones itself. They begin to crack and splinter more so than before.
“Stop this madness!” Loki pleads but his words are too late.
“It’s you or it’s me,” you answer quietly. Tears begin to pool in your eyes but you restrain from letting them fall. You couldn’t let Loki see how painful this was for you. “And it has to be me…”
You can’t help the small chuckle from escaping your lips.
“It’s the heroic thing to do,” you whisper. “And that’s more my thing, you know?”
With those last words, you allow yourself to implode. Your siphons explode alongside you. Gold metal links scattering across the room as the stones melt into your palms.
There’s a flash of light and colors, of worlds colliding, of things destroying and being made anew.
You imagine this is how a star feels like when they finally collapse and explode.
The aftermath is also similar.
The power of Truth doesn’t take too kindly for being ripped out and like a black hole it consumes everything around you.
You watch with your blurring sight how your power jumps straight into a new host. The old man is caught by surprise. He drops the Book of Veritas and claws at his chest. He doesn’t even get a chance to revel in his godly powers as it burns through him instantly.
It doesn’t end there.
The power skips to the next body and the next body and the next one. The rest of his surviving men try to scramble for the exit but it's too late. They’re trapped and like dominoes they all fall right after one another. It doesn’t take long for the power to have to revert back to its old host; the book.
With that over, Loki is instantly at your side. You can barely feel his hands caressing your cheek as he checks on you.
“Hey, hey…” he whispers. “Talk to me.”
You open your mouth only to let out a strangled gasp that surprises him and you.
“Loki, I...”
The reality of the situation is finally settling in. You barely register the tears that are spilling from your eyes. You’re crying and you hate it.
“It’s ok. I’ll get some help and you’ll be ok.”
“It’ll… It’ll be too late by then...”
“No,” Loki exclaims. “I’ll get us to that stupid wizard doctor. You just have to fight a bit longer.”
You somehow manage to shake your head in response.
“I… I have no more… no more fight in me.”
“Come on. You’re an Avenger. You’re the hero. Fighting is all you do.”
“I can’t,” you cry. “I can’t feel anything.”
“This can’t be happening,” Loki mutters in disbelief.
“We both… We both knew of the consequences.”
“Well maybe we’re wrong!” Loki exclaims. “You survived worse before!”
“I got lucky,” you answer, managing a small laugh. “That power… ripped them… ripped them apart in seconds.”
It hits him then what’s happening right before him.
You’re laughing while you cry.
Oh, Norns. This can’t be happening. Not now.
“Not me though,” you repeat faintly with a smile. “Not… me… I got… lucky.”
It’s tiring to breathe and your vision keeps fading. You don’t have much time left.
“Not you,” Loki repeats as the solution dawns on him.
Loki hates to leave your side but he had one shot to make everything right. It was a desperate man’s prayer and he could only hope it would be answered with a much-needed miracle.
Loki scrambles for the Book of Veritas.
He pries the unwilling book open.
The pages glow with the power of Truth but nothing happens.
Loki rips page after page apart.
He shouts. He curses. He begs.
“I care for her,” Loki confesses. “Please, I care.”
His words do nothing and he looks up to find your eyes closed.
Utter desperation drives him then. He draws his power onto the tips of his fingers and he starts to burn the book determined to make it into ash.
Sensing its incoming destruction, the power of Truth has no other choice but to seek a new host.
With no other option, it jumps back into you.

“Come on,” Loki whispers into your hair. He doesn’t know for how long he’s been holding onto you. Your head lays against his chest as he waits for you to finally open your eyes and look up at him. “Come on, little mortal. Wake up.”
Loki eyes the Book of Veritas or at least what was left of it.
He feared the power would slip back into the book if you were no longer a proper host so he burned it into ash. The book put up a fight but without the source of its main power it didn’t take long for its final destruction.
With the book essentially gone, you had to wake.
You just had to.
“This is all my fault,” he admits. “I should have never suggested we go after the book. Such a rash decision I made hoping that if I helped you return to your old mortal self all would be forgiven.”
He brushes the stray hair off your face and takes a deep breath. Oh, he hopes you’ll wake. He hates relying on such a fickle thing as hope, but for you, he would hold on to it until his very last breath.
“I have lived amongst the stars, lived a thousand years, fought wars, enjoyed peace, dove into the deepest, darkest parts of myself, climbed my way out of the same darkness. I’ve suffered. I’ve healed. I’ve… I have lived so many lifetimes while you… you barely lived one.”
He doesn’t know why he’s saying these things out loud. A foolish attempt at prayer. One that you’re not even listening to.
Perhaps it’s better that way.
“There are so many things I left unsaid…”
It is a long shot but perhaps his confessions will tap your power into waking you. The God of Lies kneeled under you, his better in any way and form.
Loki takes a deep breath and settles in.
“You once asked why I wish to not fall in love. I was just a mere boy when I casted that love spell. My mother found me afterwards and I told her I did it so I could never have a weakness, but in reality I was just afraid of the intensity of such emotion. To love is to be consumed entirely and I feared ever giving anyone such power over me.”
He smiles slightly.
“Though it seems that my spell, as impossible as I believed it was, came true in the form of you. I can’t even describe what you’ve done to me. You scared me and though I tried to push you away, you didn’t allow it. You stood by me… even to the point of embracing death willingly.”
Your eyes remain closed and his resolve is quickly fading.
“This cannot be the end.”
You had to wake up.
You’ve done it once before so you must do it again. One last miracle. He’s begging to the stars for one last wish.
“Not when I-”
Even now, he falters so afraid of a simple word. You are lost in some limbo unable to hear him and yet he can’t find the courage to just say it.
“I…” he repeats. “I think I love you.”
It is at that moment when Loki’s earnest and honest prayer receives a small but hopeful response.
Petals begin to rain down from the cracks of the ceiling. They float down slowly and land upon you both. Petals, rose petals to be exact and all in familiar shades. Rose petals that had traveled over thousands of miles and thousands of years for this exact moment.
Loki had casted a spell, casted a wish upon the stars, and it had finally been answered.
You gasp awake, eyes fluttering open, shooting up from his chest.
Loki fears you’ll revert to the toxic being he was first introduced to but you remain calm as you take in your surroundings before settling your focus on him. You catch your breath and finally speak.
“You have a rose petal in your hair.”
It takes a moment for Loki to register what you said not expecting such a random observation. Instead of assessing your own injuries and escaping from death, your eyes remain on him.
“I’m sorry?”
“Rose petal in your hair,” you repeat as you pull yourself away from him. “More than one actually.”
You pluck one out and show it to him. He takes it from you and nods.
“Yes, about that…”
Loki didn’t know how to explain everything now that you were awake and listening. He wasn’t ready to confess all of it over again and received a reprieve as the cracked roof was torn down by the entrance of Tony in his Iron Man suit. It doesn’t take long after that for Thor to join him while Natasha and Steve crash through the door.
They immediately shout your name and rush towards you ignoring Loki completely. You’re pulled away while Loki is quickly restrained by his brother.
“You’ll be coming with me.”
Loki doesn’t argue, instead he looks over at you watching as the Captain carries you out even though you claim it’s unnecessary.
The moment was gone. He escaped one mess in trade of another.
Thor locks him up on their residential floor. Threats were handed out by his brother and Tony before they left to check in with you. You were currently being examined in the medical bay by that wizard doctor from before. Other than that detail, Loki didn’t know much about what was going on with you but seeing as there were no alarms blaring, you must be fine.
With only time on his hands, Loki paced across the living area before the elevator gave notice of a visitor. Loki runs out hoping to see you but finds Thor instead.
“Brother…” he sighs quickly masking his disappointment with indifference. “Come to settle my punishment for my blatant disobedience?”
“Though what you did was wrong, we’ve decided to brush the incident behind.”
Loki can’t hide his surprise.
“Really?”
“Yes,” Thor answers with a slight chuckle. “In fact, you are free to come and go as you please. We all discussed it and believe you’ve earned it. You are no longer under our supervision.”
“I…” Loki stammers a bit confused. “I don’t know what to say.”
“Perhaps thank you?” Thor offers up. “Specifically to the one who settled this on your behalf.”
Loki scowls, “It wasn’t you?”
“No,” Thor answers honestly. “If it was up to me, I would have proposed that you go back to Asgard but she had a better argument.”
Thor doesn’t need to explain further. Loki knew then that it was you that had spoken on his behalf. He just had no idea why.
It unsettled him.
Was this forgiveness? Or was this an attempt to cut ties with him at last?
The latter would destroy him. Especially with the recent realization he’s had.
Loki desperately needed to see you now.
The time has come to come clean about everything.

You never realized how polluted the world could be. Loud and filled with truths woven with lies. So many emotions. So many white lies and outright misconceptions. You wish you could just cover your ears and mute the sound but it was something you felt through your entire body.
You pushed and shoved your way out of the crowded sidewalks ignoring the glares and curses directed at you.
All you desired at the moment was silence but the streets of New York have never heard of such a thing.
Leaving the tower had been an impulsive and stupid idea. You were regretting your decision but you had no intention of returning. You just needed to get away and pull yourself together preferably in a quiet and secluded place.
You turn into the nearest alley and hope that the shadowed and foul smell would deter anyone from going any deeper.
The sound of traffic and phone conversations whiter away but not enough. You can still detect the truths and lies being spouted.
I’ll be late tonight. Something came up at work.
It’s really not you, it’s me.
Of course, I love you.
You were being tugged in both directions. Mind being split into two. You grip your head hoping the migraine would subside but it gets worse. It reminds you of the pain you felt on the helicarrier before all of this happened. You feared what might come next if you didn’t pull yourself together.
Please. Please stop. Please everything just stop.
You crumble to your knees and watch as the siphons light up ready to be used. The metal is overheating and you can feel the stones ready to crack.
Every part of your body begins to hum with power and you are very tempted to let it all out.
“Don’t do it.”
You stop shaking and look up to find the last person you ever expected.
“Are you real?”
Loki refrains from making a joke seeing how in bad form you were. He nods and tentatively takes a step closer to you and is relieved to see you stay. It’s not like you had much of a choice. You were struggling to remain in control.
“I know what you’re thinking,” he tells you. “Setting your power free. Letting go.”
“It’s too much for me. I can’t do this. I really can’t,” you cry out. “Everyone keeps lying. They just can’t seem to stop. I see it everywhere I go and I can’t block it out.”
“Yes, I know,” Loki agrees. “I feel it too.”
“How are you still standing?”
“Years of experience,” Loki reminds you. “You’ll get there eventually but for now… allow me to help you.”
You hesitate and you have every right to.
“Letting this power go… Releasing it from your being means the end for you. Is your potential death really worth it?”
Realization flickers in your eyes and Loki grasps it.
“I’ve let go before and it cost me everything,” Loki tells you. “Death seems perfect now. Releases you from your past sins and leaves you as a beautiful martyr for your friends and family but it’s a lie. All of it is a lie. You will cause us the deepest pain and we will not be able to recover from it. Please do not do this to us… to me.”
He extends his hand out and though you know he’s speaking the utmost truth, you hesitate to take it. Even in pain, you can’t seem to forget everything he’s done to you.
“I don’t know if I can trust you.”
“Yes, you do,” Loki answers. “Because you’ll tell that I’m speaking the truth when I say that I will never allow you to come to any harm.”
Truth.
How refreshing it was to hear it from him.
You take his hand then and everything seems to settle immediately. You allow him to pull you off the ground and he’s quick to check you for injuries. His hands cradling your face as he looks for non-existent cuts and bruises. His skin feels cool against your skin and you sink into it.
“I can still see the power flickering in your eyes,” he tells you. “But you are nowhere near danger. Just keep taking deep breaths and focus on me.”
You nod and Loki finally lets you go. It wasn’t until he steps back that you realize that the world seems to have fallen silent.
“What-”
Loki notes your confusion and is quick to offer an explanation.
“I’m blocking us out of everything,” he tells you. “Until you can center yourself once more.”
You understand what he means when you see a faint ripple not too far from you. It was as if you were encased in a bubble.
“You have to teach me how to do…”
You stop when you remember that things were far from normal between you two. Yes, Loki aided you at the moment but it didn’t excuse him from everything he did to you before.
“If you wish for me to teach you again then I would be honored to do so.”
You smile faintly at that unsure of how to respond.
“Loki, I-”
Words fail you and you look away from him. In the silence, the emotions you had tried so hard to run away from were quick to return.
“I feel… I feel too much,” you whisper.
“I know,” Loki answers. “So do I.”
You snort at that but know he’s speaking the truth.
“It doesn’t seem like it.”
“I’m a good liar. I can hide my emotions better than most.”
“Yeah… yeah, I know.”
Loki grimaces at that and knew it was time for him to come clean.
“I shouldn’t use this time to my advantage but I’m a snake and it’s just in my nature to be selfish.”
He pauses, gaging your reaction. You remain silent because you can feel deeply he’s about to tell some deep and hidden truths.
“There is no excuse for what I’ve done. You trusted me when you had no reason to and I betrayed it out of childish fear of gaining a weakness. I bartered with your life and in the beginning, I couldn’t care less whether you would survive this or not, but as time passed… as I got to know you better I became all consumed by your being and it scared me. You are far stronger than I for your love and care carries you so much further than what my hate and fear ever has. And I…”
He hesitates. Unwilling to speak those words into existence.
“You what?” you ask.
“I-”
Loki’s afraid and you feel so drawn to him at the moment. The words he wants to speak next are luring you like a siren would a sailor.
It seemed like the God of Lies was about to confess some deep truths.
“I-”
Loki’s upcoming confession remains unsaid as two black SUV’s park on both ends of the alley. At a moment's notice, Loki’s clothes ripple away into his Asgardian leathers and armor. Two daggers slide into the palm of his hands and he’s suddenly guarding you.
“Loki?” you ask confused. “What the hell is going on?”
“Something your dear friends hid from you,” Loki explains briefly. “Apparently some very bad people would like to meet you.”
“Oh, that’s not good,” you mutter recognizing the men who were stepping out of the vehicles. “I’m defenseless and in my pajamas.”
“You know very well that you are far from defenseless.”
“Pulling out confessions from these terrorists isn’t gonna help much and if I use these siphons I might want to self-destruct again,” you answer as they surround the bubble you're in. “How long can you hold that up?”
“For as long as it takes, but that doesn’t matter.”
“What is?”
“They have the Book of Veritas,” Loki states. “And if you are so determined to be mortal again then this is our only chance of getting it back and reverting what has been done to you.”
You look up at him in surprise.
“Are you suggesting what I think you’re suggesting?”
Loki hesitates feeling deep down into his bones that this was a grave mistake, but he owed you. If mistakes had to be made then it's best he was alongside you to make them.
“If it is what you so desire, then I will keep my promise of not allowing any harm to come to you. I will follow you until the very end of it.”
Truth.
“Sounds very gruesome when you put it that way,” you mutter. You take a deep breath and hope for the best for what is to come. “Are you ready?”
“As ready as I can be.”
With those last words said, Loki drops the protective bubble. You’re both immediately surrounded. The fight is close and gruesome and though Loki and you fought perfectly together, the conclusion remained as expected.
You’re both taken.

It’s only Natasha, Steve, and you in the lab. Everyone else was told to stay away for the meeting with Doctor Strange. He should be seeing you any minute now but you had yet to hear word from FRIDAY of his arrival to the tower. His incoming tardiness only served to amplify the tense silence in the room.
Natasha and Steve were under the impression that you had no idea of the secret they were keeping when in reality you knew the real truth for Doctor Strange’s involvement. You had yet to tell them that you knew and you had already resolved not to confess that to them knowing their guilt would be too much to bear at the moment.
Late or not, you just hoped that this doctor would be able to reverse the damage done and allow you to go back to the life you had.
You were over the random confessions you pulled out of your friends and the constant fear of this power potentially killing you. You just wanted to return to your life as an Avenger who only had the power of your own human body to face the world.
You were content in being normal.
Yes, people lied to you and spoke half-truths. Yes, they kept secrets and withheld information. None of that was new, but being a lie detector… being able to sense all of that now was taking its toll.
You longed for the days in which you were blissfully ignorant of all that.
The clock strikes twelve and Natasha lets out a sigh.
“For a highly awarded surgeon, I would have sure hoped he knew the importance of being punctual…”
As the last words left her mouth, a gold ring starts to appear at the end of the room and a figure steps out.
The man is donned in a red cape, blue robes, and a glowing amulet laid on his chest.
“Agent Romanoff,” he greets. “I’m Doctor Strange. I believe we spoke on the phone.”
Natasha smiles politely swallowing back her recent words, “Yes. Thank you for coming. We have a special case and we’re hoping you’ll be able to help us.”
Doctor Strange glances at Steve who offers a nod in greeting before turning to look at you. He takes a step closer and you straighten up on your seat. He looks at you from head to toe with a calculating gaze.
“May I look at your hands?”
You offer them to him and he takes them into his own. You notice the array of scars and the slight tremble of his palms.
The question burns in your mind of the story untold on his skin and he takes notice.
“Car accident and multiple surgeries,” he answers as if he read your mind. “A lot of nerve damage. Not much could be done on the medical side.”
“But the mythical had a solution?” you ask.
Doctor Strange stops his inspection and looks into your eyes. For the first time since he’s appeared, he dons a small smile.
“Yes,” he answers.
You wish you could smile back. Doctor Strange seemed like a closed off character that held a hidden warmth. The makings of a good friend and future ally if need be. Except, you weren’t in the best of moods since Loki’s revelations the prior night.
Doctor Strange releases your hands soon after.
“When was the last time you used your siphons?”
“Yesterday morning.”
“And the stones haven’t been overcharged yet?”
You look down at the palm of your hands and frown when you realize that the stones were sitting normally. Loki had warned you that you had to use your siphons daily to avoid overcharging and breaking them.
With everything running in your mind, you hadn’t realized that alarming detail that laid so blatantly in your hands.
“I- I didn’t notice,” you stammer out. “They should be lit up by this point…”
Doctor Strange frowns.
“What does that mean?” Steve asks. “Is her power fading away?”
“Not at all. In fact, I would say it's the opposite,” Doctor Strange answers. “You were right, Agent Romanoff. It seems like her body has evolved to the point in which it is able to retain the power of Veritas. The siphons are still helpful but they will no longer become necessary for her.”
A silence accompanies his statement as Natasha and Steve turn to look at you. The secret they were keeping is out and it was obvious from your tired expression that you already knew about it.
“That’s uh… That’s great,” you mumble. “Any way I can reverse what’s been done?”
Steve and Natasha call out your name.
“We should talk about this…”
You ignore them. You didn’t need to hear their explanation. You just wanted to hear a solution from the local expert.
“Doctor Strange,” you speak again. “Is there any way I can go back to how I was?”
He hesitates and you knew then that the answer would be no.
“Had I been consulted earlier, perhaps something could have been done or at least the risks would be minimal, but as your body has been impacted and changed by this power any kind of reversal would wind up killing you. The power of Veritas is ingrained in your DNA now and if I were to remove it, I would remove your life essence too.”
You block out the rest of his explanation. Not as if it was directed at you anymore seeing as Steve and Natasha were still asking questions and attempting to find a cure elsewhere.
They’re all so focused on scrapping up a solution that you’re able to slip out of the lab without them noticing.
You don’t know where you’re going. You blackout for a few minutes until your mind clears up enough to find yourself on Thor’s residential floor. Specifically, right in front of Loki’s room.
You knock and Loki is quick to answer.
“Little mortal,” he greets. “Meeting cut short?”
You look up at him and a burning anger starts to burn deep inside you.
“Tell me you didn’t know.”
His amusement falters. His true feelings revealed now that the mask has fallen. Concern laced his features but you don’t care about the truth anymore.
“Didn’t know what?”
“Tell me you didn’t know that this could have been reversed,” you tell him. “That I could have been back to normal had we consulted other sources. Tell me you didn’t know.”
Loki remains silent and the mask rises again. You are quick to tear it down as you push him back.
“Tell me the truth!” you yell. “Did you or did you not know?!”
Loki glares down at you but you weren’t afraid of him. Your body was evolved to the same kind of strength and power that he had. You were equals now as much as you hated it.
“So what if I did?” he asks in return. “You were presented a gift and look how blessed you are now. Your skills as a warrior are amplified by strength. You are immune to illnesses and mortal weakness. You are a truth-seeker and can pull out secrets and confessions from anyone.”
Loki peers down at you.
“Thanks to me, you are a Goddess among men.”
Your anger turns to rage.
You don’t know if it’s because of the credit he’s handing to himself or that he admits to turning your life around for his own amusement.
No, it takes a second to realize that it’s because he’s lying to you.
He’s lying about everything.
Loki knows that he is and you can’t comprehend why he would still do it when he knows you’ll sense it.
“You’re selfish,” you tell him. “And you’re cruel.”
Loki feigns indifference but you can tell the damage you’re inflicting. You’re better than this but Loki has damaged you enough and you are done playing his game.
“You used my situation to broker a deal, but the deal is done,” you tell him. “My body has evolved to the point that I will no longer die from this power. I will no longer need the siphons nor your guidance. From this day forward, you and I… we are no longer friends.”
You think you see fear in his eyes but it’s quickly gone and it intensifies your fury.
As much as you hoped, Loki could not release himself from the role he’s chosen to play.
You wanted him to fight. You wanted him to rip off that mask he’s always donning.
Loki had never been a villain to you. Not until recently.
He had always been honest with you but he’s stopped. You had no idea what changed and why he started to lie to your face so blatantly.
It hurt and with this pain, you decided to wield it against him too.
“Forget my name. Forget everything. We’re strangers again.”

You’re relieved to find the halls towards the lab empty. Natasha had forced you into your costume before even considering letting you leave her room. You didn’t have the energy to argue with her and let her slip the dress on. You still had no idea what you were supposed to be and Natasha still refused to tell you.
In the end, it doesn’t matter.
It was Halloween and you had a mask to blend in with the other costumes that would surely be roaming around the party.
“Tony, I hope you’re done,” you call out as you enter the lab. “I’ve given you more than 20 minutes…”
You trail off as you notice the display that lays front in center. You tentatively make your way towards it and are in awe at the glimmer of the gold chains that would wrap around your fingers and wrist.
“Beautiful, right?” Tony asks as he finally appears. He’s already dressed. No costume as always as he wore his usual tux. “Might be my best work.”
“You definitely have a Midas touch,” you praise him. “Could definitely create another billionaire franchise if you make a couple more of these.”
“Not going to happen but it’s nice to know that I have a fall back,” Tony grins as he picks up the modified gauntlets and turns them around for you to see. “Now this is my favorite part.”
The stones that the gauntlet stored are now placed in a unique set of molds.
“The sun and the moon.”
Tony’s smile grows.
“Three things cannot be hidden,” he states as he pulls the ring-bracelet out to place it on you. “The sun, the moon, and the truth.”
They mold perfectly into your hands allowing the stones to settle in the center of your palms.
“Thought it would be fitting for you,” Tony adds. “Especially since you’re playing Lady Justice for the night.”
You look down at the white and grey gown that resembles the graceful flow of Grecian togas.
“Is that who I am? Seriously?” you groan. “I thought I was some Game of Thrones character or something.”
“Nope, you’re Lady Justice. Nat thought it would be funny with the whole truth telling thing you’ve got going,” Tony shrugs with a chuckle. “The silver mask is meant to emphasize the whole ‘justice is blind’ thing.”
You let out another groan.
“I never had the urge to strangle someone so much.”
Tony continues to laugh as you set the mask aside. He uses this lull in the conversation to place the other modified gauntlet on your hand.
“Refrain from turning my party into a bloodbath,” Tony responds. “Just try your new and improved gadgets and let's call it a day.”
You heed his advice and turn away from him. With ease, you shoot two straight beams of energy into the wall scorching it once more.
“That’s great,” Tony mutters at the holes that decorated his wall. “Let’s just add more repairs I’ll have to do.”
Loki had to give it to his brother. He did indeed have a brain and he knew how to use it seeing as Thor was ready with a casket of Asgardian mead for both of them to enjoy at the party. Loki more than gladly accepted the offered glass and did not hesitate to drink it all down in one swallow before asking for a refill.
“Brother, I’m glad you got into the holiday mood and dressed up,” Thor states as he slapped Loki on the back.
Thor took in Loki’s appearance and smiled at the all black suit he was wearing.
“What on earth are you talking about?” Loki scowls.
“You’re dressed in a costume!”
“Costume? I’m not-” Loki’s scowl deepens. “I’m not in costume, you idiot.”
“Oh, really?” Thor asks, confused. “Then why are you dressed like a witch?”
Loki refrains from responding as he inhales his second glass of mead. If he were to survive the rest of the night, Loki would need a couple of more drinks in him.
“Isn’t this great?” Thor exclaims as he motions towards the party that was at full swing. “Almost rivals our own parties, doesn’t it?”
Loki rolls his eyes and continues to drink.
“There’s Wanda and Vision dressed as a… well, I don’t know, but they look quite nice! And there’s Steve too! I don’t understand his attire either. Oh and will you look at that…”
Loki turns towards the direction that Thor is pointing to and everything seems to stop.
You’re walking down the staircase adorned in a gown that closely resembled the ones found in Asgard. Your hair was in an intricate braid decorated with jeweled pins that caught the light making it seem as you were crowned with the night sky.
He’s not the only entranced by your presence. Loki can easily see the amount of attention you’re receiving at the simple moment. You don’t pay it any mind seeing as your focus remained on him.
You smile.
It catches Loki off guard even more so as you ignore some of your new admirers in preference of his company.
It skips his mind that he was avoiding you for a reason and when he realizes it, he’s too late. You have already made your way towards him.
“Thor, Loki,” you greet with a nod before turning to him. “You both came and you dressed up...”
“I’m a prince and Loki’s a witch!” Thor gleefully provides.
“I’m not a witch,” Loki snaps.
“Then what are you?” you ask him.
“I’m dressed as a Midgardian,” Loki answers curtly.
“Right,” you whisper, noting his disinterest in the conversation. “Loki, can we…”
“And what are you dressed as for this occasion?” Thor asks, unknowingly interrupting you. “I could mistake you as a high lady of the Asgardian court. Don’t you agree, Loki?”
Loki chokes on his drink and desires so strongly that he had stabbed his brother like all of his instincts were telling him to. He didn’t wish to respond to his question knowing it would reveal too much of him.
“Yes, she does.”
Your eyes narrow at him.
“You’re lying.”
“I’m what?”
“You lied,” you repeat, stepping closer to him. “Why?”
Loki doesn’t know what drives him to respond or where the words even come from.
“I think you precede some high lady,” he states. “You are regaled like a queen tonight.”
“Oh.”
You look away from him then and try to fight off the smile on your lips.
“Well, this has been entertaining,” Thor chuckles before setting his glass aside. “My Lady, will you do me the honor of giving me your first dance?”
You look at Thor’s extended hand and smile.
“That’s really nice of you, Thor, but I can’t,” you answer as you turn to Loki. “I was hoping to give that spot up to your brother.”
Loki ignores the grin on Thor’s face as he looks at you. There is no malice or mischief at the request. You were genuinely asking him for the first dance.
“He accepts.”
Loki has no choice as Thor shoves him forward to you. You are quick to grab his hand then and pull him towards the dance floor. It is music that he is not accustomed to but you manage to lead him through it.
“I’m sorry to resort to low tactics to get you alone,” you tell him. “I just really need to talk to you.”
Loki attempts to pull away but your hold on him is surprisingly strong.
“I had no intention of making you feel uncomfortable,” you continue. “I’m sorry I crossed a line. You didn’t deserve it. No one does and yet I did it, but please know I did it unknowingly. I had no intention of digging up secrets you were not prepared in sharing. It won’t happen again.”
Loki detects no lies in your apology and yet he hesitates to trust you.
“What you saw…”
“I saw nothing,” you answer and though it is a lie, you hope he understands that your lips are sealed in the matter.
It seems the message was received as Loki nods in response.
“Very well,” he mutters.
It wasn’t the forgiveness you were hoping for but one you would accept anyway.
“Oh, and while I’m apologizing for my drastic actions,” you add with a smile. “I hope you don’t mind this one.”
You pull away from his hold to reveal your hands that are no longer sporting the gauntlets he had given you. Instead, gold chains wrapped around your fingers and wrist like an ornate bracelet. You slowly turn them over and Loki loses the little sanity he had for the night.
“Loki?”
He reels away from you unsure of how to make sense of what he’s seeing at the moment. Cradled on the palm of your hands rested sigils he never expected to see in his lifetime.
“You’re carrying the sun and the moon.”
“I guess... I am, yeah,” you laugh lightly as you look down at them. “They’re definitely an upgrade from the heavy gauntlets and they still work.”
Your words aren’t being registered at the moment as Loki attempts to make sense of the sudden shift that only he is aware of.
“I have to go,” he interrupts you.
“Wait, what?” you ask him. “But the party…”
“I’m sorry,” he whispers as he retreats.
A path opens for him easily at the dark look that encompasses his face. He didn’t get to enjoy the fear he inflicted on the general population like he usually does. Loki was just desperate to get out of there and by sheer luck, you don’t follow him.
In the end, Loki finds himself wishing that you had.

Loki was surprised when the artificial voice alerted him of your current whereabouts. It hadn’t led him to the pasture you claimed as your outside training area. Instead, Loki was led towards the gymnasium that resided indoors in the building next door.
He finds you seated in the middle of the floor mats. You are tucked into yourself as the gold siphons rested on top of your knees. You stared at the distant unknown very unaware of his presence. It was obvious that something was currently occupying your mind but he had no idea what it could be.
Loki’s curiosity over you makes him desire to know the inner workings of your mind but he was nowhere prepared to start what he expected to be a personal conversation with you. He opens his mouth to speak but nothing comes out. It doesn’t matter in the end as you finally snap into focus and turn to look at him.
“Oh, Loki,” you greet as you jump to your feet. “You’re here.”
“Hi, little mortal,” Loki nods in return, deciding to ignore the previous cause of concern for you in preference of remaining distant overall. “Did you practice with your siphons for the day?”
“Yes, I did,” you answer. “Did some target practice with Sam actually. He wanted to practice evading airborne attacks and I needed to practice sending those same attacks.”
“Sounds dangerous,” Loki scowls.
“Well, Wanda was there too just in case things went wrong and nothing did,” you explain. “No falling bodies or unnecessary confessions. I expelled my extensive power for the day and I’m ready for my lesson with you.”
The excitement you had the day before is gone. In fact you seemed a bit hardened and slightly colder.
Something had shifted in you and Loki hated that he was aware enough to notice it.
He is still unsure of how to initiate such an emotional-riddled conversation. It wasn’t exactly a strength of his but he had been at the receiving end of them enough to know the benefits of them. Loki thinks back to his mother and how she pulled him aside for these exact talks.
Perhaps you just needed the same.
Except Loki was nowhere near as experienced or caring as Frigga.
“Is uh… Are you…” Loki stammers out unsure. “Did something…”
You stare at him expectantly and Loki is annoyed at the growing frustration within him.
“What is wrong with you?”
Those were not the words that Loki had wanted to choose and yet they topple out of his mouth so graciously.
You smile though.
It’s not as warm as the one you had offered him previously but it was a smile nonetheless.
“I didn’t realize I was that obvious,” you answer. “Sam and Wanda didn’t even notice.”
“I’m more vigilant than most,” Loki states a bit proudly. “Will your melancholic mood disturb my lesson?”
You start to shake your head and feel a sharp sting run down your spine.
“I take that attempt of a lie as a yes.”
“I’m sorry,” you apologize. “Ever since I’ve got this power it’s hard to ignore all of my emotions.”
“The downside of the truth, I’m afraid.”
“I really am sorry, Loki,” you apologize again with a sigh. “I guess we’ll have to postpone my lesson.”
You start to move away and Loki hates himself for speaking up.
“Wait.”
You stop and turn back around surprised to find him perturbed.
“Just…” he hesitates once more. “Just tell me what’s wrong.”
“I don’t think…”
“Everyone, including you, have a tendency of burying their emotions when they don’t want to deal with them,” Loki states. “And it leads to catastrophic results… I should know.”
You watch him closely now making unnecessary connections of his personal experience. Loki clears his throat and continues on.
“Perhaps it's a good thing that you have to face them. Saves you time and energy in the long run.”
You register his words and let out a sigh knowing he was right.
“I guess I’m still stuck on the love spell we did yesterday,” you confess. “I know you were hiding something from me which then reveals the truth you were trying so hard to avoid admitting. The love spell… It didn’t work because my soulmate doesn’t exist.”
Loki regrets initiating the conversation now, but the tension you held in your body is slowly released with every word said.
“I shouldn’t be surprised,” you laugh lightly. “With all the glamour and glory we get as heroes, there are a lot of things we sacrifice in order to keep the world safe. We take punches, we bleed, and we… we can’t love without putting them in danger.”
You move to run your hands through your hair but are stopped by the golden gauntlets you wore.
“And I mean… how am I supposed to find someone when I have to wear these 24/7 and I can tell when they lie,” you exclaim. “Love was not in the cards for me. It’s not in the cards for any of us.”
You stare off into the unknown then and your smile fades away.
“We’re not promised happy endings,” you whisper. “Those are reserved solely for fairy tales.”
This cynicism was so unlike you and yet you spoke the unfiltered truth.
“Your friends have found love. I’m sure you can…”
“This isn’t the best time to tell me a lie, Loki,” you interrupt him.
“I’m not lying to you,” Loki argues. “I’m trying to offer you hope.”
You frown at his response. He’s being honest but you still sensed that something was off in his words.
“Hope?”
“Yes,” Loki answers. “Hope.”
He steps towards you and oddly enough you don’t shift away from him like many do. You stare up at him waiting for him to continue.
“It can sometimes feel like a lie,” Loki explains. “Hope is a fickle thing. A hard thing to keep honest since it's based on uncertainty.”
You hum in response as you ponder his words. You watch as Loki waits for you to make up your mind, but something pesters on.
“Why don’t you want to fall in love?”
“Why do you?” Loki spins the question back to you.
You’re both at a standstill waiting for the other to break.
Loki doesn’t. You do.
“I don’t want to be alone anymore.”
Loki is surprised at your response and it shows.
“What?”
“I have friends. Great friends,” you correct yourself. “But I can’t help but want more. I want to come home to someone. I want to hold their hand as I tell them about my day and hear about theirs. I want to be challenged and I want them to help me continue to grow as a person. I… I want to do the same for them as they do for me. I just… I just want to matter to someone.”
Loki doesn’t know how to respond but you didn’t expect him to.
“You don’t have to tell me why you don’t want to fall in love,” you whisper. “But maybe you are right… about holding onto hope, I mean. Maybe my soulmate isn’t ready for me yet and that’s ok. I’ll wait until they are. However long it takes.”
You smile at him again and it is filled with warmth once more.
“So your lesson?” you shift the subject. “What is it?”
It takes Loki a second to register the emotional backlash he’s having. The way you shifted from one emotion to another was hard to keep up but Loki followed along with it.
“Right, my lesson,” Loki stammers out. “I want to try something out so bear with me.”
Loki closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. He concentrates the little power he still held and extends it outward. Your sharp gasp proves its working and that’s when Loki decides to open his eyes to find his copy standing next to him.
He felt tired and it took most of his concentration to withhold his clone.
“Your power…” Loki breathes out with slight difficulty. “It should allow you to discern which one is the clone and which one is real.”
Your smile widens as you approach him.
“This is amazing. Loki… I…”
“Can you or can you not tell the clone from it’s maker?” Loki grits out.
Noting the sharpness of his tone, you look between the two Loki’s and reach out for the clone. Like a stretched out rubber band, the extended magic snaps back into him at it’s release. Loki staggers back and you are quick to reach for him.
“That took up a lot of your limited power, didn’t it?” you ask him in which he nods. “Then why would you still do it?”
“To test you,” Loki answers. “And I was right, wasn’t I?”
“It wasn’t worth the risk, Loki,” you answer. “You have to take better care of yourself.”
Loki opens his mouth to respond. Most likely an annoyed retort to push you away but you stumble back without prompting.
The room grows colder, but not by your repulsed actions.
No, it had to do with the patch of skin on his wrist that revealed itself blue.
“Loki?”
The dark prince in question pulls his long sleeve down trying to shove down the array of emotions that were threatening to burst out.
“It seems your power can reveal illusion spells as well,” Loki states quietly. “I should have known.”
“Loki,” you call out to him, sensing his incoming retreat. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to expose something you weren’t ready for.”
Your sincere apology is real but Loki can’t register it at the moment. He had involuntarily placed himself in a position of weakness which you had taken advantage of.
“I really am sorry.”
Loki takes a step back and averts his stare from you.
“Lesson’s over. We’ll start up again tomorrow.”
Before you can say anything, Loki makes a haste retreat. You wish to follow after him but FRIDAY chooses this time to capture your attention.
“Now that you are free. Mr. Stark sent you a message.”
“Not now, FRIDAY.”
The AI doesn’t register your command as a hologram appears at the nearby wall displaying Tony tinkering away in his lab.
“Hello there, my favorite agent! And please don’t tell anyone I called you that. People will grow jealous. Anyway, this is your favorite Avenger speaking and I am cordially inviting you to the party I’m having this weekend for Halloween. I’m sure Reindeer Games has got you in a tizzy so I thought a break would do you some good. The whole gang is invited so be ready. I’m sending all of you a jet. Study hard, play harder. Iron Man, out!”

Loki refrained from groaning as he stepped into the jet that would take them back to the Tower. Sam and Bucky were fighting over the pilot seat while Wanda was chattering loudly about the costume she had managed to find for herself and Vision. Loki catches your eye and he can tell you wish to speak to him. He doesn’t allow you the chance as he storms out of the seating area in preference of the solitude found in the back.
The quinjet finally sets out of the compound and Loki manages to survive the short ride without being pulled into whatever conversation you wish to have with him. You most likely wanted to know the truth behind what you had revealed previously. An answer he would refuse to give you.
Loki is almost cornered by you in the arrival at the tower but by sheer luck, you are called away by the AI allowing Loki to peacefully make his way down to his residential floor. The peace he had in mind at the return of his familiar abode is disrupted at the sight of Thor waiting for him there.
Loki’s annoyance grows at the sight of his brother regaled in his Asgardian armor swinging Mjolnir with ease.
“Welcome back, brother.”
Loki just grunts in response as he tries to maneuver around the big oaf.
“I went ahead and prepared your armor for the party tonight,” Thor continues with a smile. “It should be a merry night full of drinking and dancing. We should thoroughly enjoy it.”
“I’m not going to that party.”
“Why not?”
“Because I refuse to partake in Midgardian celebrations.”
“I would think you would enjoy this one, Loki. It’s all about mischief and magic.”
Loki rubs his eyes tiredly.
“I am quite tired, brother. I am in no mood for festivities.”
“You never are,” Thor states, forcing Loki to stop right outside his bedroom door. “You always hide out here and avoid having any fun. You’ve been here for months, Loki, and you have failed to participate in any way or form to enjoy humanity.”
“I hate this place,” Loki responds. “Why would I try to find some silver lining?”
“If that is the case then perhaps I should report to father that you have made no progress and have you sent back home.”
That definitely deepens the foul mood Loki was already in.
“If I go to this party will you refrain from reporting to father?”
Thor thinks for a few seconds before relenting.
“Yes, I would.”
“Great, good,” Loki mutters as he slips into the darkness of his room. “I’m not wearing my armor though.”
“Then what will you wear?”
Loki doesn’t respond promptly slamming the door closed to Thor’s face.
The lab was as pristine and proper as the day before you had come in and destroyed it. The wall had been repaired and the equipment that had been easily thrown before was now bolted to the ground. You let out a sigh as you try to forget that dark moment of your life when you had turned against your friends for no reason.
You still couldn’t remember what happened but it still shook you to the very core. The truth was something everyone valued and yet you had overlooked the darkness it could truly hold. Lying didn’t seem so bad now and you miss having the simple ability.
Shaking yourself from that thought, you scanned the rest of the room looking for the man of the hour.
The moment the jet landed at the tower you were promptly told by FRIDAY that Tony requested your presence in the lab.
You tried to make a quick stop towards the Asgardian floor but the AI had overlooked your floor request in preference of following its creator’s demand.
The lab remained silent after you came in. FRIDAY had announced your presence but Tony was nowhere to be seen. You felt yourself being watched but could find no one. You were starting to grow paranoid which didn’t help when a loud bang resonated nearby.
Your head snaps towards the source of the crash and you relax when you realize it’s just Dum-E hitting against the nearby desk.
“Oh Dum-E, I thought I was…”
“BOO!”
You jump at the sudden shout behind you. Out of pure instinct, you throw your hands in front of you causing your gauntlets to shoot out two straight lines of energy. The beams scorch two black spots on the recently repaired wall.
“Well that’s new.”
You turn around and glare at Tony.
“What the hell, Tony!” you shout at him. “I could have killed you.”
Tony chuckles in response and is quick to apologize.
“Sorry, kid,” he answers. “Didn’t realize you were Iron Man 2.0.”
You roll your eyes at him and laugh sarcastically at him.
“Ha, ha, ha, very funny,” you joke. “These things are the only reason I have some semblance of control.”
“Let me see them.”
You raise your hands and show him the golden gauntlets.
“Interesting design,” he mutters as he grabs a hold of them, turning them around back and forth. “I’m assuming the stones are important by their placement. I wonder what they’re made of. Carbon-based, maybe? Rare space jewel? I would have to run some tests…”
“Yeah, not possible,” you comment. “I can’t take these off. Things could go very wrong.”
Tony scowls as he lets your hands go.
“Can’t risk it for a few minutes?” Tony asks. “I’m sure I could improve them for a nicer aesthetic and easier mobility.”
“Tony…”
“Come on,” he nudges. “You don’t see me wearing my blasters because they’re comfortable. It’ll only be a few minutes. Five tops.”
You hesitate and Tony pesters on.
“Let me do this for you. It’s the least I can do if you have to wear those atrocities for the rest of your life.”
You chew on the inside of your cheek before relenting.
“Just be careful with the stones and be quick, please,” you plead at him. “I don’t wish to have a repeat of my last mishaps.”
Tony snorts as he helps you slide the gauntlets off your hands.
“Heard about that,” he snickers. “A little birdie told me and by birdie, I obviously mean Sam.”
You laugh and shake your head at him watching as he steps towards his desk and pulls out an array of files into the screen. He flips through them quickly before stopping at one.
Pepper Gift Ideas.
“Um, Tony?”
He ignores you as he opens the file up and scatters out the multiple designs he’s sketched out. You’re shocked at the multiple documents in the file but don’t have the chance to inspect them closely as Tony finds the one he was looking for.
“Here it is,” he states as he picks the design and throws it onto the screen next to his equipment. “What do you think, kid?”
“Oh, wow,” you whisper as you look at the design on display. “That’s beautiful.”
“Was tinkering for a while about making Pepper her own jewelry,” Tony responds beside you. “But she never wears what I get her.”
“I’m sure she would wear this,” you tell him. “Are you sure you want to use this design on me?”
Tony is quick to nod.
“You’ve been dealt a shitty hand with this power,” Tony answers honestly. “I just want to make things better for you in any way I can.”
“Thanks, Tony,” you tell him, heartfelt at his generosity. “Really, thank you.”
Tony clears his throat from the rising emotion and looks away. He picks up your gauntlet and begins to disassemble them.
“Now go away,” he mutters. “Let me work in peace.”
“You told me it would only be five minutes.”
“Well I lied. I’m surprised you didn’t notice.”
You roll your eyes at him and Tony simply smirks.
“I’ll have them done soon, I promise, so why don’t you go ahead and find your partner in crime, Natasha. She’s got your costume in her room.”
You hesitate but you’ve already done your daily exercises to tire your powers out. Nothing could go wrong. Or at least that’s what you hoped for.
You wince at the sharp tug of your hair. You glare at Natasha through the mirror but she simply smirks in response. You had no choice when it came to getting ready for this impromptu Halloween party. Natasha dragged you into her room the moment you showed up at her door.
You didn’t mind her help for the party. In fact, you were glad to have it as the redhead went above and beyond to have everything ready for you. From the costume to the hair and makeup, Natasha had arranged it all. All you had to do was sit there and allow her to make her vision into a reality.
Though you would use this time to catch up with your close friend, your mind was far away at the moment.
Ever since your last lesson, Loki had avoided you like the plague. Any attempt of trying to apologize to him was somehow thwarted by Loki himself or some outside force. It didn’t help that Tony’s impromptu invitation and the jet that followed severed any chance of forcing him to see you.
You felt guilty.
You had crossed a line by revealing something he wasn’t ready to when all he had done was help you. You needed to apologize and you needed to do it soon.
“Ok, spill it.”
You look up at Natasha’s pointed stare and sigh.
“I can’t hide anything, can I?” you mutter tiredly. Nat tugs on your hair again and you hiss at the action. “I’m fine, Nat. Just trying to settle my mind.”
“Of what?”
You take a deep breath debating whether it was a good idea to tell her of your past week with Loki.
Nat despised him with every fiber of her being, but you… you didn’t.
“Loki’s been a great teacher considering I’m a ticking time bomb...”
“But?” Nat interrupts.
“But,” you repeat with a huff. “I keep ruining everything with this stupid power.”
“You?” Nat asks, confused. “You ruined everything? Not him?”
“Nat…”
“I’m sorry,” she sarcastically laughs. “That doesn’t make sense. You’ve done nothing wrong.”
“You don’t understand,” you sigh. “If you just let me explain…”
“Then explain.”
You take a deep breath and turn away from the mirror to look at Natasha directly.
“I have invaded everyone’s privacy. I’ve learned things I have no right knowing and revealed things without permission. You already know how guilty I felt because of it,” you explain. “Yet, Loki wasn’t one of them. He’s immune to my power as I am to his but I recently crossed a line and uncovered something I wasn’t supposed to.”
“What was it?”
“You know I can’t tell you.”
Natasha huffs in response but shrugs her curiosity off.
“So?” she asks. “What’s wrong then?”
“I feel really bad about it, Nat, and he’s avoiding me and I just want to apologize to him because I invaded his privacy but he won’t even let me get close to him to do it.”
“He doesn’t need an apology,” Nat scoffs. “He’s a grown man. He can lick up his wounds and move on.”
You’re starting to regret confiding in her about your situation but Loki has yet to teach you how to evade telling the truth without necessarily resorting to lying.
“I apologized to you and everyone after my first outburst,” you remind her. “You didn’t need me to but I’m sure it helped.”
Natasha lets out a breath but she knew you had a point.
“Loki doesn’t deserve your kindness.”
She’s being honest with her opinion but you don’t feel the same way.
“I think differently,” you answer. “I think it’s been a long time since Loki’s been treated with some kindness.”
Natasha's eyes narrow down at you.
“Do you…” she hesitates. “What exactly is your relationship with him?”
“What do you mean?”
“Are you acquaintances? Friends? Or is it more?”
You’re surprised at the question.
“I guess we’re friends?” you answer unsurely. “Mentor and student seems weird so yeah… friends.”
Natasha seems unconvinced but she doesn’t speak up on it. Instead, she motions you to face forward again so she could finish up with your hair.
“So do you think I’ll have time to slip out to apologize or am I going to have to wait until the party?”
Nat can’t avoid the snort from escaping her promptly earning her a confused look from you.
“Loki doesn’t go to the parties,” she tells you. “Not since I could remember.”
“Then why did he come with us in the jet?”
“Maybe because he has to monitor you and we have to monitor him?”
Nat’s right but you can only hope that Loki might prove her wrong.
“If he’s there… apologize to him,” Nat tells you hoping to ease the scowl that was settling on your face. “Just don’t expect him to forgive you. He’s not apologetic, far less forgiving.”

Loki scowled as you led him once more out of the beaten path. He’s forced to descend down the damn hill again until you are content at the bare field that laid ahead of you. Loki glares at the sun that is beating down at them but is relieved at the cool breeze that flowed through the nearby trees.
“Why did you bring me out here again?” Loki asks. “Isn’t the point of an indoor training facility is to train indoors?”
“After the incident from yesterday morning I decided it would be best if we trained away from everyone,” you answer. “I really don’t need to hear more of my friends confessing things to me.”
“Come on,” Loki drawls. “I’m sure a tiny part of you enjoyed it.”
You hadn’t and yet a sharp sting runs down your spine at his words. As if your power was reprimanding you for lying to yourself. You try to ignore it but involuntarily shiver and Loki grins at the action.
You hate his grin.
You don’t necessarily hate him even though you had many reasons to.
Loki destroyed New York in an attempt to rule over mankind. He also got his ass chewed out by his parents when he got sent back home.
Now he was here, claiming to be better, reformed.
You had yet to see it but noticing how miserable Loki was in the past months roaming the halls of the Tower you knew the slow punishment was certainly fitting the crime.
Though now, things seem to be working out for him.
“Look, I don’t want to question your superior knowledge on this matter but there has to be another way for me to expel the excess power I keep surging,” you state. “I can’t be blasting things hours at end so I don’t physically implode.”
“There are other ways but they’re more complicated,” Loki answers as he crosses his arms. He was hoping that would put an end to that question but you pestered on.
“So?” you ask him. “I can handle it.”
Loki snorts.
The arrogance you held was comedic. He would blame your humanity for the awful trait but his brother and his merry band of friends were endowed with it too.
“You’re asking me to teach you how to wield your seidr,” Loki explains. “In mortal words that should help you comprehend, you want me to teach you how to cast spells. It will expel your powers but not as quickly or as greatly as the siphons will.”
“So is that a yes?” you ask him unable to fight the smile on your lips. Loki rolls his eyes but you continue. “Come on. I’m trying to find the silver lining to this new power. If I can cast spells like a witch then I want to learn.”
“I take offense to the word witch,” Loki mutters, noticing how your fingers fidget with the gold siphons. Your obvious discomfort of them was written so plainly on your face. “Even if you could cast spells, you’ll still have to wear and use the siphons daily.”
“Are you agreeing to teach me then?” you ask him. For once you were excited at the prospect of this lesson.
“My spells of expertise reside on tricks and lies,” Loki explains. “They won’t work for you so I will have to figure out spells that rely on your ability of the truth.”
“Seriously?” you deflate. “There’s nothing you can teach me today?”
“Well I had planned to teach you how to pull out secrets and confessions in a more covert way, but you won’t allow my lesson, will you?”
You shake your head and Loki rubs his eyes tiredly.
“Just teach me something simple!” you offer. “Something that you as a kid managed to pull off and then I’ll subject myself to your lesson without questions or commentary.”
Loki watches you silently realizing that you needed this distraction. It’s been obvious from the beginning that this power was something you hated. He was confused by this anger. Had it been him in your shoes, Loki would be elated to be more powerful than before.
Of course, you were a different breed.
From what he could tell by his observations, you were beloved by all. Strong, kind, and smart to be considered at the same level as many of these heroes you surround yourself with. You did it all by yourself and with the single motivation of wanting to do good for the world.
Your intentions are and have always been so pure that Loki wonders if that is why the Book of Veritas deemed you worthy to release its power into you.
“I can teach you how to shield…”
“Come on, I know you have something more fun up your sleeve,” you interject.
Loki tries to think but he finds himself distracted by the warm smile on your face. He’s seen it in the company of others but never had it been directed to him. You had never spent this much time with him to deem him one.
“I uh… I cast childish spells. They all rhymed too. I don’t think…”
Loki doesn’t understand why his mind drives him to that particular memory again. Of floating rose petals and impossible possibilities. He’s horrified by it. Especially as you take notice of it.
“You know of one,” you point out, your smile widening. “What is it?”
Loki hesitates but he knows that if he withholds his response for too long you’ll be onto him in seconds. You’ll pry the answer out of him. The truth coming out one way or another.
“It was a foolish love spell.”
“A love spell?” you repeat amused. “Little Loki wanted to fall in love?”
Surprisingly enough, you don’t laugh or make fun of him. Loki is wary by the lack of it but answers your question nonetheless.
“I desired the opposite actually,” he explains. “I don’t wish to ever fall in love.”
“And why is that?”
“I’m not going to answer that,” Loki states.
You’re very curious to know the answer, but Loki’s privacy was one you had yet to invade without his permission. He deserves to keep his secrets in the same way that you didn’t always deserve the truth.
“So how do I cast this love spell?” you ask him.
“Wish to fall in love?” Loki asks, turning the focus on you.
You shrug carelessly, “Maybe.”
“Don’t have enough admirers already?”
“What are you going on about?” you ask with a roll of your eyes. “I don’t have any admirers.”
“You can’t be serious.”
You stare at him confused and Loki sighs in response.
“You are.”
Loki looks away in exasperation causing you to fidget again.
“Just spit it out already,” you exclaim.
“Bucky and Sam admitted they found you attractive yesterday morning,” Loki states. “And don’t get me started on the Captain…”
“Steve doesn’t see me that way,” you sigh. “We’re just friends. All of them are my friends.”
“Well, all of your friends are attracted to you.”
You can’t avoid the sudden warmth that encompasses your face as you realize he’s being honest. You try to stammer out a response but the words are useless.
“I uh… I mean… They’re not…”
You take a deep breath trying to ignore Loki’s obvious amusement.
“I don’t see any of them that way,” you respond curtly. “They are attractive men. Actually very attractive. I’m honestly surprised that the entire team hasn’t been poached by a model agency by now.”
“You’re straying away from the point.”
“Right, well…” you stumble. “The point is that I don’t find myself romantically attracted to them. They’re great guys but I need more.”
Loki doesn’t really care for your explanation and yet he finds himself intrigued.
What more could you possibly want?
You had the whole world in your hands and yet you desired more.
There was only one way to find the answer and he dreaded the mere thought of it.
“The love spell needs some binding elements,” Loki states. “I used rose petals but you can use whatever you can find.”
You can’t help the smile on your face as he conjures a small gold bowl in his hands for you to use. You eagerly take it from him and Loki watches as you skip away to collect whatever you can find.
“You are going to bind your desires to these elements so I would suggest you choose wisely.”
You heed his warnings before coming back to him.
“Ok I’ve got them,” you tell him. “What now?”
Loki looks down at the filled bowl and scowls.
A few autumn leaves, daisies, and blades of grass.
“Interesting choices,” Loki mutters. “Do you have your spell in mind?”
“No,” you answer. “But why don’t you tell me how yours went and I can just… copy that.”
Loki notices the mischief laced in your smile. Your intentions were so blatantly clear because you had no wish to hide them from him. He wonders if this was a side effect of your powers or if it was from your original character.
“A yellow rose petal for friendship, a white one for youth, a red rose petal for love and a blue one for truth,” Loki states. “...And that is all you’re hearing from me. The rest is none of your concern.”
“Fine,” you smile. “Keep the juicy bits to yourself.”
You take a deep breath and look down at the contents inside your bowl.
“For my heart I wish to have... a man who loves me with all that he has. Blades of grass to signal he’s lean. A fighter, a lover, a man of means. Autumn leaves and daisies of plenty. I hope to find love when I least expect it.”
Loki could taste the magic in the air. He closes his eyes and feels the warmth and softness brush against his skin. He waits to hear your shocked gasp as the elements in the bowl begin to float away but it never comes.
“Is something supposed to happen?” you ask him as he opens his eyes to find the bowl still filled. “I feel like something should have happened.”
“You’re indeed right,” Loki frowns. “Your binding elements should have flown away to find your perfect pair.”
“Did I do it wrong?”
Loki shakes his head. He could still feel the residue of your magic and the spell was perfectly casted.
“Repeat it again.”
So you do feeling the bowl grow warm in your hands.
The magic is more pungent now and Loki feels how heavy it lays around them. Before he could decipher the phenomenon, the entire contents of the bowl blew up between them. You and Loki are covered in the debris of grass, shrivelled up leaves, and daisy petals.
“Ok,” you cough out. “Was that supposed to happen?”
“Not at all,” Loki scowls as he brushes off the remains from his person.
“What does it mean?” you ask as you pull off a petal from your hair.
The magic was fading away from the air and Loki had no explanation to offer as to why your love spell had gone wrong.
Perhaps your demands were too much, but if that were the case that meant Loki’s spell had actually worked while yours didn’t. Someone who wanted love couldn’t achieve it while someone who didn’t had.
Loki lets out a sigh.
“I have no idea,” Loki shrugs as he takes the bowl from your hand and makes it disappear. “You might have infused too much of your power in it and burnt out the spell.”
You can’t help but chuckle.
Loki wasn’t necessarily lying but he wasn’t telling you the entire truth. The thing that surprised you immensely was that you really didn’t care to know what he could possibly be hiding.
Not this time. Perhaps not ever.

You walk into the kitchen quickly gravitating to the freshly brewed coffee pot. You’re not the only one awake in the early morning as Bucky and Sam are bickering from their seats on the counter.
“I didn’t fall asleep,” Sam exclaims. “You did!”
“No, I didn’t,” Bucky scoffs. “I was awake from the start to the very end. You’re the one who can’t hang after your early bedtime.”
“You want to come after my bedtime?” Sam repeats. “At least I get the recommended eight hours of sleep every night. I'm a healthy individual. What do you do? You stay up all night doing God knows what and sleep in all day. You got bags under your eyes, old man!”
Your chuckle breaks the tension in the room as you settle across from them.
“Are you two… sleeping together?” you ask.
“Me and him,” Bucky answers as he points at himself and Sam. “He wishes.”
Sam looks offended.
“I’m so way out of your league and besides, you’re not my type.”
“I’m everybody’s type,” Bucky argues.
You roll your eyes at them wondering how you managed to end one argument just to ignite another one.
“Guys,” you exclaim, capturing their attention immediately. “If you’re not dating, then why are you arguing about who fell asleep first?”
Sam and Bucky share a look and you knew the answer would not be to your liking.
“Tell me.”
“We were just keeping an eye out for you, doll,” Bucky answers. “Loki knew what he was doing when he chose the room right in front of yours. Sam and I thought it would be for the best to station ourselves in your hallway throughout the night to make sure he doesn’t pull anything.”
“Yeah, but then I fell asleep on my shift,” Sam sighs. “So we lost surveillance for the rest of the night.”
“Ha! You admit it then!” Bucky exclaims. “It was your fault!”
“Oh, come on,” Sam scoffs. “You should have had an alarm ready to take over for your shift. What’s your excuse for not waking me up?”
“Well, I snoozed my alarm,” Bucky confesses with a shrug. “I expected you to come over to wake me up but you didn’t.”
“So what I’m hearing is that it’s both of your faults…”
“Yes,” both answer.
“...And that you guys invaded not only Loki’s privacy but my own for stalking my hallway the entire night...”
“Yes.”
“...And not only did you fail in your appointed surveillance job but you have also now severely pissed me off,” you conclude enjoying the alarmed look falling upon both of their faces. You take a sip of your coffee and hum. “I hope you know payback’s coming.”
They continue to stare at you with mouths gaped open.
“I know I should be afraid but I find myself very attracted to you right now.”
“Same.”
You stare at Bucky and Sam in surprise.
“Did you guys mean to say that out loud?”
Bucky scowls before you find his face turning alarmingly red.
“I mean you’re hot when you’re mad and threatening and in charge...”
“I think what Bucky is trying to say is that we have a thing for women in power and why did I just tell you that,” Sam stammers out. “I… Wait, are you doing your thing? Your confession thing? Oh, you are! You sneaky…”
You frown when you realize that you were indeed doing it again. You were in control of this power inside of you but you didn’t know how to make it stop. Part of you wondered if you even wanted to.
“I gotta go,” you interrupt as you set your mug down. “I gotta go now.”
You don’t wait to hear their responses as you run out of the kitchen. You just wanted to make your way into your room and figure it out yourself but luck was never on your side seeing as a cheerful Wanda appeared around the corner.
“Good morning,” Wanda greets. “Do you wanna hear a secret? Vision and I have been secretly seeing each other. No one knows!”
You can’t hide the shock on your face and neither can Wanda as her smile drops.
“Why did I just tell you that?”
You don’t offer a response as you sprint out of the hallway hoping to just reach the privacy of your room. It doesn’t surprise you when you run into somebody else but you are relieved at the face you find.
“Loki,” you sigh. “Good, great… Let’s go.”
You take a hold of his wrist and start to lead him out of the building and away from the facility overall. You stray from the paved path and start descending down a random hill. Loki waits for his monitor to go off but nothing occurs.
“Where are you taking me, little mortal?” Loki finally asks. “Why are we so far out?”
“I can’t shut it off,” you exclaim as you let him go. “I was just having breakfast with my friends when they started to confess things to me. I didn’t even realize it until they were spewing things I didn’t need to know. I’m not manic like I usually am. I am in full control here and I don’t know how to turn it off.”
Your chest suddenly feels tight and you can’t take a deep breath.
“Can I even turn it off? Am I stuck this way?” you ask as your vision begins to fade out. “Oh… Oh I don’t feel so good. My heart should not be beating this fast and I feel really hot. I feel like I’m going to…”
Loki is quick to grab you as he notices your imbalance. He helps settle you down onto the ground and advises you to breathe.
You do but it doesn’t ease you at all.
Loki didn’t have to touch you to feel the power radiating from your body. Once again it had alarmingly grown overnight to the point that it was no longer being held into your body but around it like a protective cloud.
“Don’t panic.”
You glare at him in response seeing as you were currently in a state of panic.
“Well… don’t panic more than you already are,” Loki corrects. “But your power has grown once again and seeing as you are in control then we must resort to other methods in how you deal with this excess power.”
Loki waves his hands in a circular motion and a pair of golden gauntlets appear out of thin air.
“These should help,” Loki states as he kneels down in front of you. He takes your hand and slips one on before doing the same with the other. “Just don’t take them off.”
You inspect the gauntlets that you were now sporting. The metal was cool against your skin and laid heavy around your wrists. A light stone rested on your palms and you watched as it shifted colors.
“What are these?” you ask him.
“Siphons,” he answers. “The stones embedded on the palm of your hands come from Alfheim. They store and help young seidr-wielders to manipulate magic more precisely. I used similar ones when I was younger until I grew into my powers.”
“But I won’t have that same luxury, will I?”
“No, no you will not,” Loki answers. “You will have to wear these for the rest of your life and expel the collected power over time. If you go too long without doing so the stones will become overpowered and break which wouldn’t go well for you.”
“I end up dying, right?”
“Yes.”
“Alright, great,” you mutter. “How do I do that? Expel power?”
Loki tries to find the words to explain but finds himself at a loss. He can’t help but think back to how his mother had given him his own siphons when his power started to affect everyone around him.
“Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and focus. Conjure up your intention and then trust your magic to make it real.”
Loki uses those same words with you and watches how you follow his instructions with more ease than he had all those years ago.
A bright light flashes from your hands shooting into the wooded area nearby. Two tree branches crash to the ground and you flinch at the sight of them.
“Ok that’s kind of scary,” you comment as you look down at the gauntlets. “Was that normal?”
“In a way…” Loki mumbles realizing the alarming power that you held in the literal palms of your hands. “Like I said, you’re stronger than I presumed you would be.”
“Great, that’s great,” you mumble. “Now I know how Tony feels with his thrusters.”
You look down at the palm of your hands noticing the siphons lighting up once more.
“They’re up and running again.”
“As I’ve said before, you’ve been bestowed a great power.”
You can’t help but pause and think over your entire interaction with him.
“A power that you seem immune to,” you point out as you turn to look at him. “The others… they confessed things without prompting. You didn’t. Why?”
“We’ll both be immune to each other in one way or another,” Loki explains. “I can never lie to you since you’ll be able to tell. Of course this means that you won’t be able to lie to me because that is my area of expertise and I’ll know.”
“But why?”
“Because balance,” Loki repeats. “You and I are two sides of the same necessary coin. We are the light and the dark, the sun and the moon, the good and the bad... ”
“Right, the truth and the lies,” you sigh but something still didn’t fit in his explanation. “Why does it feel like you’re not telling me everything?”
Loki is surprised that you have caught on to him quickly. You were adapting fast to your new power. Trusting it instinctively and so naturally as if you already accepted it as a part of you.
He can’t help but stammer out in surprise.
“There are loopholes,” Loki answers honestly. “Manners in which I can evade the truth without speaking dishonestly.”
You narrow your eyes at him.
“You could certainly work around that though as you did now. I’m sure with some training you could manage to catch on to the evasions quicker.”
“Are you going to train me in that?” you ask. “Or are you going to keep those secrets to yourself?”
Loki can’t help but chuckle.
You were bold and unafraid of him. Not many of the new agents had that same courage nor the strength to be fighting alongside Midgard’s merry band of heroes. You were one of a kind.
“We shall see,” he answers. “For now, let’s focus on the siphons. Become familiar with them, get used to the feel of them, and most importantly, learn to aim.”

“How do you have your powers?” you ask the moment you find Loki walking the hallways. He makes a sharp turn but you manage to keep up with him. “I thought the ankle monitor was supposed to prevent you from using them so how did you use them yesterday?”
Loki’s pace quickens and you huff in annoyance. His long legs allowed long strides which left you at a disadvantage. You made up for the increasing distance by practically jogging to remain by his side.
“Come on tell me.”
You grab a hold of his wrist forcing Loki to look at you. Something ignites within you as you stared into his eyes. You could feel the answer to your question at the tip of your tongue. It was brushing against your mind in a teasing manner.
Loki takes immediate notice of the manic glint in your eyes and is quick to tear himself away from your trance.
“Stop that,” he snaps. “Do you have any idea of what you’re doing?”
That seems to really break you as you shake your head from the haze it was pulled into. You frown and take a step back.
“I’m sorry,” you whisper. “I didn’t… I didn’t mean to…”
You stumble back from him blind to the mail cart that was coming your way. Loki barely manages to see it when it hits you right on your hip sending you crashing down to the ground.
“Y/N!”
The distracted intern is quick to pull their headphones out muttering a string of apologies. You don’t pay them any mind as you felt an intensity start to grow throughout your body.
“I’m so sorry Agent Y/N. I didn’t see you cause I was strolling Instagram on my phone because this job gets so boring sometimes. I am really sorry though! I really need the money so please, please, please don’t report me to…”
The intern helps you up and you find yourself lured by the confessions that are falling from their lips.
“Keep going,” you tell them. “Tell me everything.”
“Not another word,” Loki exclaims at the intern before pulling you away. “Now go!”
Loki then turns to you.
“Stop and gain control of yourself.”
“I want to hear the truth and you have eagerly taken their place.”
You pull all that power inside you and haul it into your hands. You take up the lapels of his suit and slam him into the nearby wall.
“Speak the truth.”
Loki is rightfully surprised by the sudden strength you displayed at the moment.
“Your powers have certainly grown since last night.”
The words manage to stir you but not enough to gain full control.
“Why am I-” you scowl as you notice the position you’re in. You feel like your brain is made of cotton as you tried to make sense of the last few minutes. “Ugh, I can feel it everywhere. It’s pulsing through my mind pulling me deeper inside.”
Loki can feel your hands shake but they did not release him.
“Nat told me everything. You promised to train me. You promised to teach me control because if I didn’t… I could die.”
You look up pleading at him for help.
“Please, do something,” you whisper. “I can feel it burning.”
Loki takes a hold of your wrists not needing to pull on his seidr to look for yours. It was pulsing lively right at the tips of your fingers.
“You want to know how I unlocked your handcuffs with a snap of my fingers?” Loki asks. “You want to know how I got an ounce of my power back?”
Eager to know the truth, you nod.
“Like this.”
You watch as his hands begin to feel warm on your skin.
“I’m siphoning a bit of your power to myself,” Loki explains. “I can’t take much because of the monitor, but it is enough to be able to do trivial things like unlock doors and handcuffs.”
He releases you but you can still feel it pulsing through your veins.
“It’s still too much.”
No confession of any kind could sate the power within you. The power had grown enough to desire a physical outlet.
“Hit me,” Loki offers.
“What?” you exclaim in surprise.
“Hit me.”
Your hands are now itching for the violence but Loki didn’t deserve it. Even if he was asking for it.
“I am the God of Lies,” Loki continues. “They call me Silvertongue for the way I can spin stories that will make you even doubt the truth you just told. I am everything you despise. So… hit me.”
The burning in your veins intensifies and you are quick to release him just so you could slam your hands to the wall beside him. Loki is trapped between you and the wall but he’s well aware of the damage you’ve inflicted.
The wall cracks and splinters reaching the ceiling which then causes some flakes of plaster to snow down onto you both.
You feel light.
You can breathe freely now and your thoughts are clear and concise.
Loki watches as you return to yourself. The power quickly retreating after having its needs met. You look defeated as you warily look up at him.
“I’m really dangerous, aren’t I?”
Loki simply pulls your hands away from the wall holding them in his own.
“You were always dangerous,” Loki states. “We all are.”
“But I could really hurt someone now,” you argue. “Just look at the wall!”
Loki doesn’t need to because he felt the strong pulse himself.
“I thought we had a few more days but your powers have grown exponentially since I last saw you. For that misconception, I apologize.”
“So what do we do now?”
The answer to your questions comes from an unexpected source.
“Stark will like to see you both in the conference room.”
Tony, Steve, and Thor are the ones waiting for you in the conference room. They all shared a grim expression which did nothing to ease your nerves. You look up at the screen that Tony has up that displayed the image of you, Loki, and the cracked wall.
Loki casually takes a seat at the table but you can’t bother to do the same.
“So you know.”
“FRIDAY made me aware of the situation,” Tony states as he waves the screen away. “You lost control.”
“Yeah, well I’ll pay for the damages,” you answer. “And I should probably apologize to the intern…”
“Don’t worry about it,” Tony interrupts. “I’ll handle everything.”
Tony looks over at Steve and nods for him to jump in.
“We’ve all discussed it and thought it would be best for you to be relocated to the uptown Avengers Facility. You’ll be safe and have ample space to practice and gain control of your powers.”
“I’ll also be away from everyone,” you point out.
“For your safety,” Steve reassures.
“And for theirs,” you state with a heavy sigh. “Ok, that’s… that’s a smart decision.”
Loki rolls his eyes at your submissiveness. He raises his hand to warrant their attention which he’s quick to receive.
“What does that mean for me?” he asks. “I am meant to train her.”
“We know,” Thor steps in. “And it has been decided that you will be moved alongside with Y/N to continue her training. You will be restrained with the same rules but you will be free to move anywhere around the property there. I think you will enjoy it, brother.”
“I’ll be the judge of that,” Loki mutters as he leans back in his chair. “When do we leave?”
“Tonight,” Steve answers.
“And just before you get any ideas,” Tony asserts with a glare in Loki’s direction. “The standby Avengers are currently residing there and they are well aware to keep an eye on you. So if you step out of line, you’ll be sent back here and locked into your room and your room alone.”
“The threats are completely unnecessary,” Loki chuckles. “I already gave my word I would help.”
“He’s right,” Thor agrees after his brother. “As long as it benefits him, Loki will do as told.”
Steve nods believing him while Tony remains suspicious. He glared at Loki waiting for the fallen prince to break.
Loki didn’t.
“As entertaining this staring match is, can I please have the room?” you ask them. “I just… I just need to clear my head of some things.”
“Of course,” Steve nods. “Be ready by 7. I’ll fly you guys out there.”
“Lovely,” Loki comments as he starts to rise from his seat. You’re quick to grab a hold of him and motion for him to remain in his spot.
“Stay,” you ask him. “I have some questions for you.”
You ignore the shared look of concern between your teammates as you focused on Loki alone. They filter out of the room with hesitation but don’t offer a comment. The moment they leave the room you take the seat next to Loki and speak.
“I know we’re not friends, I know you don’t owe me anything, and I also know you’re only doing this to gain your freedom from that ankle monitor but can you please be honest with me?”
Loki notes how tired you look now. It was something he had never seen in you before which was making him act in a similar manner, promising something he rarely does.
“I’ll be honest.”
Sensing that he spoke true, you ask the question that has been bothering you since this whole thing began.
“Why me?” you ask. “Why do I have this power? Why am I cursed with it? It makes me cruel and vindictive and I hate it. Why me?”
“I don’t know why it chose you,” Loki answers. “But it only further confirms that you are truly special if it didn’t kill you. As for your supposed curse, this power is simply trying to protect itself. You’ve been attacked twice now which is when this cruel alter ego of yours arises. The moment you gain control these incidents will no longer occur.”
You run your hand through your hair unhappy with his answer.
“So how are you going to teach me control?” I ask him. “You said it yourself. You’re the God of Lies. What do you know about the power of Truth?”
“I, out of everyone, should know the extent power of the Truth,” Loki states. “If I didn’t, then how would I comprehend my own gift of lies.”
You seem displeased at his response.
“Without the truth, lies wouldn’t exist,” he continues. “We are two very necessary sides needed for balance.”
“I’m just human and you’re a God,” you remind him. “This delicate balance is off.”
Loki reaches for your hand surprising himself with the act. He wonders if this was your doing again. Your power making him act on his empathetic emotions that he rarely paid attention to.
“You will gain control of your powers,” Loki states. “And when you do, it won’t matter if you’re human and I’m a God because you might find yourself even stronger than I.”
You find yourself surprised when you notice that the words he’s spoken are completely true.

TTSWL Masterlist
You feel like you’re floating in the middle of a dark pool surrounded by cold and unknown waters. It is relentless in its attempts to drag you down into nothing. Some part of you desires to just let yourself sink and try to ground yourself to whatever you find below. It would be so easy and yet a part of you knew that if you allowed yourself to reach the bottom you would be unable to float up once again.
So you fight against the rising tide to keep your head above the water. It doesn’t take long then to be pulled out of that darkness.
“She’s waking up.”
“She can’t,” someone mumbles next to you. “That tranq should have kept her under for the rest of the night.”
“It’s the power within her. Must have adapted around the sedative to wake its host up from it. The power won’t be put so easily to rest.”
“Then do something about it!”
“I can’t until she’s fully conscious!”
As if on cue, your eyes flutter open. Your eyelids feel heavy and the brightness in the room doesn’t help your sudden weak state.
“What’s-” you voice cracks and your tongue feels so foreign in your mouth. “What’s going on?”
Your sight blurs in and out but you recognize that bright red hair from anywhere.
“Nat?”
“Hey, Y/N,” she whispers beside you. “It’s ok. You’re ok.”
You can’t help but feel suddenly angry at the lie that she’s so blatantly telling you at the moment.
“Liar, liar,” you mutter through gritted teeth. “Pants on...”
A hand is quick to cover your mouth and you move to shove it off only to find your hands handcuffed to the hospital bed.
“That would have not bode well and you know that.”
You glare at your assailant only to find Loki staring down at you with a grin. The anger doesn’t fade away at the sight of him. It seems to enhance and he takes notice of it too.
“Everyone out!”
Your eyes snap away as you take in the crowd that’s in the room. Everyone is apparently there and you find this sudden urge to yell at them for staring.
“We’re not-” Tony starts to say before Loki cuts him off.
“She’s still quite volatile and until she gains some ounce of control, she will not stop until you are all disposed of.”
With that warning, they all have no other choice but to leave. They all shoot you a sympathetic look and you despise it. You don’t know why you’re feeling so darkly about your friends but you couldn’t stop it.
“I know,” Loki whispers as he looks down at you. “I know you are quite confused, but I’m going to let go of you now and I hope you can rein in your emotions and be civil with me.”
His honesty is oddly refreshing and you find yourself relaxing under his hold. True to his word, he releases you and you watch closely as he retreats into the seat next to you.
“I’m sure you have questions.”
“So, so many, don’t know where to begin,” you answer. “My head is spinning and I see no end.”
You frown at the choice of words that flowed out of your mouth so casually.
“Why am I rhyming? Why can’t I stop? Tell me now before my head drops.”
“I will answer your questions but I need you to remain calm,” Loki responds. “Can’t have you losing your head... literally.”
You take a deep breath trying your best to ease your mind, but it was hard. You didn’t know what was going on and why, out of everyone you knew, Loki was the one assisting you with it.
“You seemed surprised to find everyone here,” Loki states. “Do you not remember how you got here?”
You shake your head feeling uneasy of not having any recent memories since the museum.
“You found a book, one of mine, known as the Book of Veritas,” Loki explains. “Essentially, you got too close to it and it unleashed a power to you. I’m not sure exactly the extent of your abilities but I do know that you will have a knack of always knowing the truth of whoever you meet.”
He pauses as you try to make sense of everything you’ve been told. Oddly enough, some innate part of you told you he wasn’t lying which further proved that his explanation was indeed right.
“Now, as for your rhyming tongue,” Loki takes a deep breath and shrugs. “I can only presume that this new psychic development is one your mortal mind isn’t capable of withstanding. You are overwhelmed and your mind has reverted to a default language to ease the strain.”
“This is not ok,” you mumble. “Am I stuck this way?”
“No, not if I can help it,” Loki answers. “The rhyming is getting on my nerves already.”
He frowns, narrowing his eyes at you.
“Don’t know why I told you that. Must be another side effect of yours.”
You open your mouth to respond but close it when you realize that whatever apologies you had would end up rhyming and sounding insincere.
Loki doesn’t question your silence and instead props his hand up for you to take. You find yourself hesitating even though something told you he meant no harm.
“I just need to assess the power you have,” Loki explains. “It’ll be quick and harmless.”
With that answer, you raise your hand as far as the handcuff allowed you to. Loki met you halfway and you instantly feel a warmth spreading through your body.
“Hmm,” he hums. “That’s surprising.”
He lets go of your hand and looks up at you.
“You’ve grown stronger since you first came in. Not strong enough to expel your power physically so we will have to do this the hard way.”
“Hard way?” you repeat.
“You need to dig deep and spread some truth.”
“How is that hard?”
“Because certain truths, the heaviest ones, we like to keep real close,” Loki explains. “You don’t remember this, but you pinpointed some of your friends' insecurities when you first came in. You were quite cruel with them.“
You frown at hearing this hoping your friends knew you hadn’t meant any of it. As if sensing where your mind had drifted to, Loki speaks up.
“They know it wasn’t you,” he assures you. “It’s all because of the power residing in you. There is no way to extract it without killing you so the solution here is to gain control of it. Seeing as I am the expert on the book and magic itself, I’m going to train you. So first, let’s get you back to speaking normally.”
You nod in response and take a deep breath.
“Speak the truth. Use me as a target if you wish. I like to think I’ve got thick skin when it comes to taunting.”
You hesitate at Loki’s offer, but you find it so easy to read him.
“Little Loki went into the Great Hall. Little Loki had a big fall. Little Loki was the laughing stock of them all. Little Loki felt so utterly small.”
Loki chuckles at the memory you brought forth. It was simple and childish. Yes it was embarrassing to fall in front of the royal court but it was just a drop in the ocean compared to everything else. He sits back in his chair and looks at you.
“Now I know you can do better than that,” Loki states. “Come on, dig deeper.”
You find yourself focusing a bit harder on him and the words just slipped out of your mouth with ease.
“Silver tongue turned to lead. Thor won her heart in your stead. Princess Elvira loved the royal prince. Loki wasn’t even offered a second glimpse.”
That one did make him wince but Loki wasn’t utterly devastated at the memory of the Alfheim princess favoring his brother over him. You were getting close to gaining some control but your rhyming tongue still stood strong.
“Dig deeper,” Loki repeats.
You take a deep breath and clear your mind of everything but Loki. Envisioning his image, his voice, his overall being.
Eyes turning red. Ivory skin turning blue. Cold, everything is cold.
“I…” you stammer out confused. “I’ll rather not say.”
Loki pauses wondering what it is that you saw but withheld from saying.
“Y/N.”
“No, it’s a secret for a reason,” you shake your head. “I don’t really understand what I saw exactly but it felt so dark.”
Loki knew better than to push you to state what you saw in him. He suspected already of the secret you might have uncovered. You had certainly dug deep if you managed to find it.
He shrugs it off like he always does and looks at you with a small smile.
“You didn’t rhyme that time,” Loki states. “You managed to not only control what truth to find but whether or not to say it. That’s progress.”
“Does that mean I can get these off?” you ask as you raise your cuffed wrists.
With a snap of his fingers, the handcuffs are pried open. You stare down at your freed wrists and look up at him in surprise. Last you were told, Loki was incapable of doing magic.
“How did you do that?”
Loki doesn’t deem you a verbal response as he offers you a grin before getting up and leaving you on your own.

TTSWL Masterlist
The moment Steve lands at the facility, Loki practically runs inside. It was as if he expected to be dragged back to the tower if he hesitated for even a moment. You watch him and he seemed pleased enough in what he encountered. You turn away when Steve finds you still lingering in the back. He takes your bag from your hand and motions you to walk with him.
“You ok?”
“Yeah,” you sigh out. “It just feels weird to be back to square one, you know? I worked so hard to get where I am and now I have to go back to training wheels. It’s not really fair.”
Steve offers you a sympathetic smile.
“You’ll be back with us before you know it,” he assures you. “And if Loki is to be trusted, which I’ll admit is a hard thing for me to do, you’ll come out of this stronger than ever.”
“I was already strong before,” you sigh. “I was doing fine. Sure, I didn’t have some super soldier serum or a powerful suit, but I was fighting alongside you so that speaks for itself.”
“Y/N…”
“Steve just…” you whisper in resignation. “I was happy being normal and now… now, I’m not. I haven’t really gotten a chance to wrap my head around that everything has completely changed.”
“I understand,” Steve breathes out. “Things just happen in life, Y/N. They may be good, most times it’s bad, and it’s up to us to figure out how to deal with it. I know you have it in you to make the best out of this situation.”
Steve stops at the door of your room and hands you your bag back. Your hand lingers on his as the request comes swiftly into your mind.
“Can I ask you for a favor?”
Steve nods, “Anything.”
“I’m going to try my best to gain control of this power but if I can’t, then I want it out of me.”
“That could kill you.”
“Sacrifices have to be made for the greater good,” you tell him. “You out of everyone should know. You did the same thing years ago.”
“And you know what that cost me.”
Indeed you did. He had told you about it some time ago. Trusted you with this information he kept close.
Steve had lost his comrades, the love of his life, and skipped 70 years into the future and though you wouldn’t have the same repercussions he had, you found the conclusion albeit still alarming.
“If I hurt someone, Steve… If I end up on the wrong side of things where I become the enemy… I don’t know if I could live with myself if I could have prevented it to begin with.”
Steve hesitates but he must see the deep desperation in your eyes.
“I’ll look into it,” Steve sighs. “And if that day comes… Just know, I’ll find another way to save you. I don’t care what it takes.”
You knew Steve to be stubborn so you allowed him this small victory. You release your hand from his and take your bag. Steve is quick to pull you into a hug and you allow yourself the small comfort.
“The next time I see you better be on a good note,” Steve chuckles into your ear. “I know you can beat this, Y/N. Don’t give up before it even starts.”
You nod and force yourself to let him go. He offers you one last encouraging smile before finally turning and walking away.
Your quiet solemn moment is disrupted by a dark chuckle that appears suddenly in front of you.
“That was agonizing to watch,” Loki mutters. “I think our innocent Captain was expecting a kiss out of it.”
“We’re just friends,” you respond glaring at the God that leaned against the door frame of his room which conveniently resided right in front of yours.
“Are you sure?” Loki grins. “I don’t think you’re being completely honest at this moment.”
“And I think you’re spinning lies out of nowhere so you can incite drama because you find yourself bored.”
Loki doesn’t respond and you knew you had him. You turn away and open the door of your room. You don’t bother to turn the light on as you throw your bag inside. You make up your mind you’ll unpack and settle in later.
“Come on,” you call out to Loki. “Let me introduce you to everyone.”
A highlight at being moved to the large and expansive Avengers Facility that laid out of the city is the people who resided there. You can’t help but laugh when you step into the dining room to find a Welcome Home banner hung up with Wanda and Vision at the head of a filled table. Bucky and Sam were there too but the serious scowl on their faces made it seem like they were unhappy with your arrival.
“You didn’t have to do all of that,” you tell Wanda as you hug her. “It hasn’t been that long since I’ve stayed here.”
“It’s been long enough,” Wanda states.
“Welcome home Agent Y/N,” Vision nods at you.
“Hello again, Viz.”
“We all heard about what happened,” Wanda speaks up. “Are you ok?”
“Not really,” you shrug. “But I will be once I get myself under control.”
Wanda squeezes your arm and you turn towards Bucky and Sam who haven’t moved to greet you. They remain rooted in place as they glared at your travel partner who remains in the outskirts of the room.
“Hey, stop that,” you nudge them. “He’s not a threat.”
“That’s not what Steve said,” Bucky mutters. “He said we needed to pay extra attention to him.”
“Yeah, emphasis on extra,” Sam adds.
“I’m sure he didn’t mean it literally,” you argue.
“Better safe than sorry,” Sam responds.
You roll your eyes at them and turn to Loki instead.
“Loki, this is the rest of the team,” you introduce him vaguely. “Team, this is Loki.”
Wanda’s the only one to offer a small wave while everyone else remained silent. You understood why Vision was hesitant to step forward. Loki had once wielded the mind stone that was currently resting on his forehead. As for Bucky and Sam, they were just being overprotective by Steve’s warning.
“Alright, great start,” you mumble as you nod Loki forward. “Let’s just sit. They’ll get over the whole security threat thing once they realize you’re not going to do anything.”
“And what if I do step out of line?” Loki asks with a slight grin.
The question doesn’t go unheard as Bucky and Sam are quick to straighten up while Wanda lets out a heavy sigh. You set your plate down and turn towards the mischievous God.
“Bucky there,” you point out. “Has a metal arm and a variation of the super soldier serum running through his body. He’s also a very notorious assassin but we don’t talk about it.”
You then point towards Sam.
“Now Sam here, you might think he’s nothing special and in a way he isn’t…”
“Hey!”
You shoot Sam a pointed glare and he shuts up enough to allow you to continue.
“As I was saying, Sam may not be a super soldier, but he can sure fight like one and you won’t want to face him with his Falcon suit on. You won’t stand a chance if he catches you in the air.”
Loki takes in the information you offered and makes note of it. He knows better than to create enemies without knowing who they are and the threat they may impose on him.
“Now Wanda is a sweetheart,” you continue earning a smile from her. “But she can kick ass if she needs to and between you and me, I wouldn’t want to get on her bad side. She got her powers through the mind stone which allows her to do a lot of cool stuff. Telekinesis, telepathy, force fields, mental manipulation… The list goes on and on.”
You take a deep breath and then turn to Vision who’s still joining them on the table though he doesn’t need to eat dinner.
“Now Vision is the youngest of us all if you can believe it,” you tell Loki. “I still don’t understand the science of how he was made but basically he’s an android with a conscience. A robot with a heart of gold. Plus, he’s the self-appointed guardian of the mind stone and we all saw him wield Mjolnir though Thor refuses to admit it.”
Loki now realizes why his brother had been so easily convinced to allow him out of his sight. With this band of trainee heroes, Loki would be well supervised and beaten if he stepped out of line.
“Now that the introductions are out of the way, let’s eat.”
You eagerly begin to pile food on your plate passing the courses around. Everyone follows your lead easing into an amicable conversation. Loki simply sat back and drank the wine offered as he suddenly found himself with appetite lost.
