What are your Soul Eater ships besides Spirit/Stein?

Oh boy LOL well. I actually don't have too many? Not that I think about seriously. I'll name the ones I think about seriously and then the couple I think about casually. This is gonna be a non-spoiler post with just brief overviews, but I'll mention both anime and manga.

Soul/Maka - I mean. They hit hard in both canons. Easily the most shippable and I'm delighted to ship them. Dare I use the term soulmates? Yes, yes I dare. They're utterly perfect for each other. I could ramble on for thousands of words about why but that would take too long in this post, so I shall save it lol.

Spirit/Stein - Also love them in both canons. I think anime shipping is easier even though they technically get less time together than in the manga? There's reasons for that. Also I find I'm more drawn to them as a platonic ship, but 'eyyy ain't gonna say no to the romance. I am drawn to them because of the whole story... You've got these two dysfunctional adults with some crazy insane history together and we get bits and pieces and more questions than answers and just what happened and I desperately need to know, and I need them together. These two hold me utterly captive with the potential for their stories.

Stein/Marie - Still ship in both canons, but manga is far more shippable and this is why I find Spirit/Stein easier in the anime, because you cannot deny Stein/Marie in the manga. I haven't even finished reading it yet as I write this and I'm just. Whoa. He...actually loves her. I didn't see it coming. And they ALSO have tons of off-screen story that leaves more questions than answers and I direly need to know! Another huge wash of potential.

Black Star/Tsubaki - I mean... Come on. It's right there. In both canons again. But it's the sort of ship where...they don't get romantic till they've grown up. Not for some years later, as late teens or young adults, and then it's sort of an...oh yeah of course we're in love, sort of thing. I don't give tons of thought to this ship, but it's definitely got me.

Kid/Liz - I really do not think about this one hardly at all, but glimpses again in both canons caught my eye. I see this more as a one-sided unrequited love thing on Liz's part, except it's not actually unrequited and it would shock the living daylights out of her if he ever showed any sign of sharing her feelings. Which of course he would some day, heheh. But yeah I barely give thought to this one at all.

Ox/Kim - Don't think about them, but yes very good. Also canon in the manga, woo.

Ox/Harvar - Don't think about them, but they remind me of SoMa.

I think that's it? That might be all I've thought about ship-wise? Hmmm... If I think of more I'll come back to this post and add to it.

Halloween Special (Teaser)

@jonesy-murgatroyd has created a monster by requesting a Halloween fic. Title is still TBD, but I thought I'd give y'all a little taste since I've been screaming at @silluuuu for the past hour. A little snippet below the cut!

Maka tried to saturate her shrug with an easy nonchalance as she grabbed Tsubaki’s hand and started for the stairs. “He’s always late anyway, so his loss.” She continued to stomp, dragging Blake’s prize away from him with every step. “Actually, he’s probably not even bothering to come since he’s just–”

“Is there a day of your life where you don’t complain about me?” The stark white of Soul’s hair shone like a beacon from their vantage in the dilapidated doorway as he sat at the foot of the grand staircase of the entryway. Besides that and the crimson glow of his eyes, the rest of him was a shadow, dressed in a black motorcycle jacket and dark grey jeans.

“Maybe if you didn’t give me things to complain about,” Maka snapped back instantly. Her ash-blonde hair flicked with the aggressive turn of her chin, avoiding any hope of making eye contact with him. It was one of the few ways she could still remain strong against that idiotic smirk of his. “Like being late.”

“I was here before you,” he growled but it was useless as the pair of girls disappeared to the left adjacent room. Soul set a helpless grimace Blake’s way. “How the hell is she already annoyed with me?”

“Seriously, dude, the two of you are disgusting,” Blake replied through a snicker.

anyway i had an idea for this but it came to me at 6am after i just woke up so it’s probably REALLY eh. anyway kid is death because thats like the logical jump and blackstar is puss and tsubaki is kitty but not romantically involved at all because tsustar is. vile. anyway, they’re cat robin-hoods, steal from the rich give to the poor. one day blackstar steals something thats supposed to grant immortality and he’s like “theres no way this is real but lemme test it out anyway for personal reasons.” and then it ends up being real. and he’s totally chilling with that because this could be his shot at surpassing god ‘cept death and death jr are not okay with that at all and he looses in a really funny way to dtk and gets pretty pissed. his day is ruined more when tsubaki says she’s on her last life and wants to retire and blackstar properly freaks out. in my head i steal from the sandman a little and the thompsons are two regular twins who got killed during a robbery gone wrong and then get the chance to keep ‘living’ as presumably servants of death and they’re like ‘yeah sure whatever’ and then get passed off to his neurotic nervous wreck of a son and then also belatedly realise theyre ravens and definitely not human. they chill though theyre his literal wing-sisters. *flicks wrist*

anyway because big daddy death is totally not chill with the idea of immortal cats wandering around he tells dtk to go and Git Him because its good training for when he succeeds him or whatever. anyway dtk goes and tries to do that and even though every time they fight he absolutely claps blackstar, b*star always gets away and its getting kinda really frustrating, so he just watches him trying to find a moment where his guard is down enough for a quick stab n go. doesnt really happen instead he just gets feelings which is really gay and lame of him everyone point and laugh. anyway eventually he goes from ‘i must kill this guy because dad said so’ to ‘i wanna be his friend and maybe also kiss him idk’ hes not very good at emotions. its just as well the thompsons are there. anyway eventually theyre on speaking terms and after much preamble they have a lil heart to heart and its very sweet.

i imagine if ass*star was a cat he’d be a maine coon not because they’re large or particularly menacing, but because theyre one of the few breeds with enough fur to maintain that absolutely batshit hairstyle that hes got going

anway kid is like totally freaking out because big daddy death told him to go and kill this guy and he’s absolutely not done that at all, in fact he’s done the polar opposite and romanced him instead so they’re running around trying to figure out what to do and liz is like ‘dude your dad would kill and die for you why not just be out with it’ so they do that and lo and behold, big daddy death is like. totally chill about it.

anyway death dies and that really sucks but i also havent thought up to that point, all i know is that ass*star wont be allowed to run around like that forever and hes definitely not off the hook for becoming some fucked up god of accidentally gaining immortality.

I think ironically people ship Kid with Blackstar so much because after a certain point any charachter development between Blackstar and Tsubaki disapeared, making her look as just a tool and nothing more - this also was kinda a consequence of embracing BS surpasing of Gods idea on his own kinda making it necesarry that he can do everything on his own with his weapon only being an accesory. A shame a shamr

I'll get to this later, but I want to start with a disclaimer: even if Tsubaki was more present in this story, the Black Star x Kid ship would still be popular, because of how many interactions they have in the manga, and just how engaging their interactions are, in terms of differing personalities, similar goals, and how they complement each other.

Black Star x Kid is a good ship for embracing their differences, including how their differences complement each other--just as Black Star x Tsubaki is a good ship, as each gives the other what they lack (one is outgoing, one is more reserved; one is overly confident, one needs a cheerleader and she gets it in Black Star) while contending with the same problem (family guilt, family pressure, lineage problems).

So, the real answer isn't whether to cheer on only DeathStar or only TsuStar: the real answer is to ship both ships...or toss in Liz for a poly relationship between the four.

Now, onto the longer answer in response...

I don't ignore that increased interactions can increase the popularity of a ship.

I also have seen ships that are super popular between characters with almost no interactions. Hell, look how popular ships get (not just as ironic or as memes--as legitimately enjoyable ships) between characters from completely different series, authors, time periods, media.

All of that said, I would rephrase it: Tsubaki unfortunately becomes so much less of an entity in Soul Eater that she doesn't get to exist as a fully realized character, or a character as fully realized as she was in earlier arcs, such as her fight against Masamune, Black Star training at her family's home, or the final fight against Mifune.

After the Baba Yaga arc, she is here to get jokes thrown at her for being a perv in the Book of Eibon arc, then just Black Star's weapon in combat. At least Soul got to say and do stuff even when being Maka's partner. Even as I can criticize stuff in the Book of Eibon, at least Liz and Patty got a flashback moment to show why they were devastated at Kid's kidnapping.

But Tsubaki doesn't get to do much during and after the Book of Eibon arc. So those moments where fans will hunt down panels in the manga where Black Star and Tsubaki share space, share looks, is limited. At most we get Black Star revealing he and Tsubaki sleep in the same room--but that is again part of making Tsubaki look like a perv, and more of the attention is on Kilik's reaction to all of this, again leaving Tsubaki erased from her own moment.

You point out that by the time that Black Star is practically a god that having Tsubaki act as more than just a tool is difficult.

But look at another story, such as Noragami.

Even as Yato and Yukine get more powerful and ascend to higher forms of divinity, neither one is really in a position to be on their own.

If we treat Yato as the Black Star here, he is still super arrogant and needs Yukine to humble him: we could have had that with Tsubaki still needing to humble Black Star, but even when he gets kicked in the balls by Patty, she isn't the one to humble him, that's Kim doing it.

If we treat Yukine as the Black Star here, he is still learning the ropes of his new powers--after Baba Yaga, we don't see Tsubaki continuing that training of Black Star, and that's a shame to not get to see more of such training, to show how Tsubaki unlocked those greater abilities Black Star shows later, such as the "walking" up to the Moon on Tsubaki's scarf or vomiting back a laser. Yes, this opens up a sexism problem--the girl who teaches the boy so that the boy can surpass the girl--but at least then Tsubaki is more involved and getting to do something.
