@mariedemedicis asked about media depictions of Thomas and Anne within the Tudors OT3 Verse Universe pre that universes The Tudors and I had to make a separate post because it’s an interesting one.
Pre and Post Triad Discovery is a very different thing (Maya discovers the triad when she’s actually very young - like early/early mid twenties - based partly on a real historical discovery) - Triad Discovery happens like late 1990s/early-mid 2000s (The Tudors TV show happens later in this universe).
So pre triad discovery is interesting because Thomas is like, a character but not a major character - he’s the person the Serious Character Actor Who Is Best Known For Theatre plays - especially in the earlier films he’s there mostly as an employee.
(I have to ponder what the early films are/would be called because it’s possible that cinema happens earlier in this world but /tangent)
There’s a movie called Henry & Anne that’s one of the earliest and Thomas is in it as just like, Lord Chancellor Who is Good (tm).
The next thing they do is sort of Dashing Semi Anti Hero (there’s a terrible but incredibly entertaining show from the 1960s about Thomas being a sort of James Bond figure + one also from the 1960s in which Thomas is a Gay Vampire).
(We do not in this case discuss the other boleyn girl in this world. or maybe we do. See also this worlds versions of TSP. Or Reign.
Anne often gets a bit flattened into ‘peacemaker + badass heroine’ (there’s a series in which she fights vampires, another one in which she has a dragon. Or the Doctor Who episode(s)).
Post Triad reveal it’s…that’s a whole other post. The Tudors is kind of the seminal show for that I’d say. (There are a lot of books).
(There was also an adaptation of a series of historical romance novels about the Welles Brothers (aka Norwich) - the books were written pre reveal but I think it’s possible that they ran into trouble with adaptating Norwichs book for screen).

Those Tudor stans who called me a “genocide loving freak” because of a joke about TSP’s Anne Boleyn (they could joke about fictional Katherine of Aragon just fine), fuck off. I’ll never forget the gaslighting and the hate campaign you launched against me. That’s rich coming from Henry VIII’s stans.

So I was going through the last episode of TSP looking for screencaps and I just had this thought
I hope no one was mean to Alice Nokes on set.
I don’t judge any actors by the characters they play but Emma Frost just seems like the type to try to create rivalries between actors if their characters are enemies and I just hope she didn’t try to make anyone be mean to Alice because she played “that witch” Anne Boleyn.

Hi! Your blog is awesome♥️ I was wondering if there is any chance for us to get some wardrobe from the other boleyn girl or less known characters from other series like Mary rose Tudor (sai bennett) from tsp, maddalena from medici (sarah felberbaum) or Ursula from the tudors . There are some extra nice outfits with great embalishments and accessories for an overlooked character and I like the effort put în details. Anyways, have a nice day dear!
Thank you so much. I actually already did Mary Tudor. Her tag is unfortunately a bit mixed with her niece but the sets should be in there.
I will put the other two on my to do list. For The Other Boleyn Girl, do you have anyone in particular in mind besides the already requested Anne Boleyn? I will do the two Wolf Hall requests I have first (since I already did the prework) and I wanted to do the Anne Boleyn request for The Other Boleyn Girl after that. When I'm already on it anyway, I can also do other characters.
My queue is currently in April, so for Wolf Hall/The Other Boleyn Girl, I assume mid-April/May. For the others, I can't say yet. I try to not have the same time period twice in my slots for more variety, although I just failed at that for the next month since I decided to do the many Outlander requests and Marie Antoinette at the same time.

What I find strange about TSP is that they sold Catherine as "girlboss", "woman in power" in the promotion of the series. And talking a lot about Isabella, but they put Catherine despising Mary because she was a girl? As, she loved her daughter the minute she was born, she invested in her education to the point of encouraging her ladies to do the same for their daughters. How did they find it good to write Catherine as a bad mother to Mary?
Real Catherine loved her daughter despite her sex and them presenting it other way around, is one of the points I hate the most about the TSP. But why did this happen, why did they write her as bad and sexist mum?
Frankly, because the whole tv show was written by people with very twisted view of the world and values.
Catherine is supposedly heroine in their mind-so all her actions are excuseable, all her wrongdoing.
Who thinks this way? I am by no mean an expert in psychoanalysis, but after watching youtube channel on narcisism-it very much sounds to me as production or writing of TSP was lead by female who was/is a narcisist. Imo.
How do I know it is female? Well, given the amount of toxic feminism and amount of hate against men in the tv show, I think man is highly unlikely. Though I can be wrong.
Narcisists often have strong opinions of what they consider 'good-behaviour' and it comes with excusing any and every bad behaviour if the person is your white list(people who you like) and not forgiving anything even tiniest mistake if person is on your black list(people who you don't like). Narcisist crave attention(it gives them fuel) and don't really care if the attention is possitive or negative.
So supposedly Catherine is on white list-all she does is gold and saintly. Henry is blacklisted-he is rotten to core and everybody else who don't help Catherine. But rest they all admire and love Catherine!
But actually, narcists never truly admires anybody but themselves. They just pretend they do. Just as Tudor fans do, narcisist can also have strong emotions about Tudors.
They are all more influencal, more known than this tiny narcisist can ever be. We love them, we hate them, we argue about them. In other words in narcisist's mind we are giving the fuel which should rightfully belong to the narcisist(our attention) to this historical dynasty. And narcisist is jealous of it.
And whole tv show is imo is one big sabotage of Tudor dynasty. Jealous rant of narcisist, who twists things so badly, that we start to question whetever or not we should love those historical figures. All while pretending to have the best intentions and trying to give us true picture. While never bothering to even fallow the timelines. Or to not have stupid mistakes at script, which should have never made the final cut.
Actually the person behind this tv show is jealous of Catherine and secretely hates her. I have no other explanation for it. Because even the most ardent fan of Anne Boleyn never claim that Catherine was horrible mum! And btw, not just to Mary in TSP, but to her other children as well.
To narcisist childrens(even their own) are props-tools to use to get sympathy, to get admiration, to get fuel. And that is how in TSP children were used-as tool for plot-they should love their mummy and forgive years of neglect when needed and drop dead when needed.
What kind of mother puts her child on cold floor and leaves him there asleep to catch cold or pneumonia(which could kill him)? Worst kind!
If they set that scene in winter(during which that child actually died), then the prince being left on cold stone floor and Catherine raising up after hours from prayer and finding him dead, could be taken as him freezing to death-because she put him there!
And tbh, some churches are so cold even during the hot summer days, that I am not entirely sure we can spare the Catherine in TSP of the blame for her son's death. Yes, the whole scene is untrue and it is not very obvious, but if you think about it if we go with their narrative-her actions might have at least contributed to his death. And whole Flodden absurdity is yet another example of child-endangerement.
That is how narcisist honours their hero who they secretely hate.
By putting lots of tiny things to hate about the character into the story, which seem not so bad at beginning, but as whole create picture of true monster.
That is my opinion.

What would you say is the most accurate portrayal of Henry VIII? 💙
Oh goodness…
Okay I’ll admit that it’s been a while since I watched any Tudor media and I haven’t seen every depiction of him.
So if you follow my Anne Boleyn blog then you’ll know that I don’t think there’s really any depiction of her that’s wholly accurate and I feel that way about depictions of Henry as well.
I think Wolf Hall is really good. I haven’t actually watched the whole series and I haven’t read the books but from what I did see…I like that he was kind of soft-spoken and not this ultra-masculine tough guy (like JRM in season 1 of The Tudors). Especially because that series takes place in the 1520s-30s after Henry had calmed down from his rambunctious teenage years but before shit really hit the fan. I also liked the way they showed his devotion to Anne (what’s funny is that depiction of Anne is horrible so why would someone be devoted to her) but in terms of real life, there’s that moment in whatever episode I can’t remember where they’re talking about what happens ifAnne predeceases Henry and, I can’t remember the exact quote but it’s something like “I would never replace you” or something like that and I just think that’s a really nice and tender thing because, I feel like, most of the time Henry is depicted as being obsessed with Anne in a domineering and bad way rather than just being devoted to her because he was really in love with her.
And here I am making it all about Anne again 🙄
Anyway, I just like that Henry in Woof Hall isn’t so masculine and testosterone filled because I feel like that’s generally how he’s thought of because of the wives and all the alleged mistresses and all that. And yes he was athletic in his youth and he obviously still enjoyed jousting into his 40s so he was fit and muscular, but he wasn’t like a Richard the Lionheart or Henry V where he was just, like, a war machine living and breathing fighting. Henry loved poetry and philosophy and all these other ‘soft’ pursuits.
I think The Tudors did a pretty decent job showing Henry’s religious beliefs and how he was never really Protestant but also not completely Catholic either. I mean, I know people think that if it wasn’t for the Pope denying him his divorce he would’ve never reformed the Church but if that’s the case, why did he continue church reforms after he got his divorce and, even more so, after Anne’s death? Surely, if he was Catholic throigh and through, after Anne died he would’ve just been like “alright, that’s it, all this reformation stuff is over now” But the fact that it carried on and the fact that he raised both Edward and Elizabeth as Protestants makes me think he clearly had some interest in it and thought there were some merits to it. But at the same time, I don’t think he ever really fully let go of a lot of the old Catholic traditions and beliefs. What I also like about The Tudors is I think it was pretty well-balanced re: Henry’s personality. I feel like a lot of depictions of him just go straight for the ‘tyrant’ trope and don’t even bother trying to show him as a complex character whereas The Tudors did show him being loving and charming, but also showed how he could just turn on someone on a dime and—to make it abou Anne again (🙄 ugh here I go again)—in season 1 you see how completely in love with and devoted to Anne he is which just makes i so much more heartbreaking when, in season 2, he just acts so cold to her.
Um what are some other depictions of him? The Other Boleyn Girl/The Spanish Princess…um he had red hair and was tall in TSP? He was just such a whiny man child in TSP I can’t think of anything thatI liked. And don’t even get me started on TOBG. I mean, the whole premise of the book is that this King (who apparently thinks only with his penis) decides to use and abuse one sister then abandon her to use and abuse the other sister but instead of the sisters blaming the king for being dickbrained they blame each other! What the fuck is that! Like there’s that one scene in the film (don’t know if it’s in the book) where Henry is asking Mary if Anne is trustworthy and he’s like “she has a power over me” and I’m just like fucking hell.
What else? Anne of the Thousand Days? Hate it. He’s such a whiny man child in that too. Although at least that acknowledges his marriage to Catherine probably wasn’t a love match like a lot of people claim. Although I feel like it does that only because that’s Anne’s story so that’s their way of propping her up and making her seem more justified…or something.
The Private Life of Henry VIII? I know it’s supposed to be a comedy but I couldn’t even finish it…
There’s a smattering of other depictions like Henry VIII (2003) and other ones like that…
As for Keith Michell (did you think I’d forgotten about him? Well I did…a little bit. I’m a bit scatter-brained today), I kind of have the same feelings about him that I do for Wolf Hall. I like that his Henry isn’t a big macho man. It’s been a long time since I watched his iterations…I feel like there was something about him I didn’t like but I can’t remember exactly what that was. But I think his is probably the closest to the real Henry (man, I could’ve just said that at the beginning and saved you from all this rambling).
Those are all the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I feel like I covered most of the famous ones. (God now I have to spell-check this rambly mess.)

The worst part of the spanish princess was seeing Alice Nokes in that ugly yellow dress while in the background, right behind her, someone else was wearing that silver dress which Natalie Dormer wore as Anne in the tudors. The levels of mockery and derision were INSANE. The vibes RANCID. I would have killed to see Alice in that dress. THE DRESS WAS RIGHT THERE!! PUT HER IN IT!!

didn't the same person create the other boleyn girl, the spanish princess, the white queen and princess? cause i roll my eyes sure they go on history a bit but make up fiction/ go on stupid myths which annoys me. like the other boleyn girl anne boleyn tried to sleep with her brother in hope to get pregnant. the Spanish princess that henry was some how pursuing catherine of aragon, when she was betrothed to his brother and almost like arthur was just in the way of the love story of catherine of aragon/henry the viii is like rolls eyes. in the white queen it richard III and his niece elizabeth of york being portrayed as a love story= cringe. (sure didn't go on the myth he poisoned his wife to marry her but he pretty much was like he was going to cast his wife aside for her is nearly as bad and pretty much like he was interested in her while he wife was alive/ill is adn white princess the continuation of henry vii and elizabeth of york hate each other because she loved richard iii again cringe and BS.
I don’t know about The Other Boleyn Girl. I’m pretty sure TWQ, TWP, and TSP had the same creative teams because they were all produced by Starz, but The Other Boleyn Girl was its own separate thing (although it’s possible there was some overlap).
But, obviously, all those productions were based on Philippa Gregory novels and PGregs enjoys a very casual relationship with the truth.
