What happened after Goethe’s “The Sorrows of Young Werther” and Donna Tartt’s “The Secret History” has literally the same energy but a slightly different vibe

A lot of people forget that TSH was not just an aesthetic book. It was gross. Gross shit happens. There is very rancid inner monologues, drugs, animal deaths, plenty of throwing up, sweating, bleeding and embarassing, uncomfortable sex and desire. It was not just some hot white people in tweed coats quoting Homer and Virgil back and forth. And that's why Saltburn feels like a spiritual successor to it in the way a lot of the dark academia books of the 2020s do not.

To go wrong in one's own way is better than to go right in someone else's.

practically every character in The Secret History played a role of someone that they were not.
richard and bunny played themselves as rich, when in fact they were poor.
charles and camilla played themselves as pure, when in fact they were weaved with immorality.
francis played himself as cool, when in fact he was an anxious mess.
henry played himself as intellectual, when in fact he was blinded by his own stupidity, wealth, and ego.
julian played himself as a father figure, aiding to the care and minds of the Greek students, when in fact he was conniving and egocentric, swept away by his own gain, unlike a true father.
mrs corcoran played herself as a victim and sorrowful mother of a lost child, when in fact she only cared about her own appearance in front of the camera.
hell, even dr roland played himself as a psychologically-forward man, deep in intellect, when in fact he was nearing dementia and a complete gobble of a man.
i mean, gosh, this theme plays out so grandly. putting up a front and hiding your real self. whether for gain or by self consciousness.

"She was a living reverie for me: the mere sight of her sparked an almost infinite range of fantasy, from Greek to Gothic, from vulgar to divine."

"Francis sent me a six-page letter about how bored he felt, and how sick he was, and virtually everything he'd had to eat since I'd seen him last."
Imagine if Francis had written the book instead lmao.

what? no haha I totally understood the point of the secret history. no yeah I totally get that doing things just for the aesthetic is bad and that being willing to do anything for acceptance is dangerous. I for sure didn’t just want to be part of the greek class and kiss henry winter [sweating]

People criticizing Saltburn are so boring. Live a little man. You can write dissertations about the glitter girl feminism in Barbie and how Mike Flanagan is revolutionizing horror with his weepies but draw the line at a campy gothic Secret History AU with a devious fujoshi perspective that dares to ask the age-old question of what would happen if Richard Papen was actually allowed to act out his inner impulses. Like I see people making hour long video essays about how it failed the Eat The Rich concept meanwhile Emerald Fennell is reaching yaoibait depths you cannot begin to fathom.
