"Surrounded by nobles whom she could not trust, and harassed by intrigues that disordered administration, Catherine invented a new form of rule by making her successive lovers the executives of the government. Each of her lovers was, during his ascendancy, her prime minister; she added her person to thee moluments of the office, but she exacted competent service in return. "Of all places in the government," wrote Masson (one of Catherine's many French enemies), "there was not one of which the duties were so scrupulously fulfilled. . . . Nor, perhaps, was there any post inwhich the Empress displayed more choice and discernment. I believe no instance occurred ofits having been filled by a person incapable ofit." It would be a mistake to think of Catherine as a debauchee; she observed all the external amenities, never indulged in risqué conversation, never allowed it in her presence.
To most of her lovers she gave a faithful—to some a tender—attachment; her letters to Potemkin are almost girlishly devoted, and the death of Lanskoi afflicted her with a desolating grief.
She approached with both art and science the task of choosing a new favorite. She watched for men who combined political with physical capacity; she invited a prospect to dinner, sampled his manners and mind; if he passed this scrutiny she had him examined by the court physician; if he survived this test she appointed him her aide-de-camp, gave him a succulent salary, and admitted him to her bed. Being quite devoid of religious belief, she allowed no Christian ethic to interfere with her unique manner of choosing ministers. She explained toNikolai Saltykov: "I am serving the Empire in educating competent youths."
The treasury paid heavily for these favorites—though probably much less than France paid for the mistresses and concubines of Louis XV. Castéra reckoned that the five Orlovs received seventeen million rubles, Potemkin fifty million,Lanskoi 7,260,000. Some of this outlay came back to Russia in effective service; Potemkin, the most pampered of her lovers, added lucrative territory to the empire."

♔ ━━ announcing EUDOXIA OSMAN ( NEE ROMANOVA ) , the LEGAL WIFE OF THE SULTAN OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE ! in a recent portrait they seem to resemble CHARLOTTE HOPE. it is a miracle that SHE survived the last five years, considering they are GENEROUS, AMBITIOUS, and ENVIOUS. i hope the plague has not changed them. they are FOR working together with the other kingdoms.
( Here's Lux again with a second child, Eudoxia !! She's redhead & a scorpio, which is always... fun ?  Also, I'm rewatching Magnificent Century rn so I'm very much here for all the harem & political drama, and I'm open to everything! )
Full Name : EUDOXIA OSMAN ( nee ROMANOVA ) Title (s) : Grand Princess of Russia Legal wife of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire Age : 26 Parents : The late Tsar & Tsarina of Russia Siblings :  tsar  alexei romanov, grand prince, grand princess samara romanova, grand princes  ekaterina romanova, grand prince .  Spouse : Sultan Mustafa Osman Issue : - ( Currently 2 months pregnant with a first child ) Zodiac : Scorpio Religious affiliation : Orthodox Christian Languages : Russian (native), Latin, French, English, Ottoman Turkish Orientation : Bisexual Vices : manipulative, proud, cantankerous, unforgiving Virtues : Generous, brave, ambitious, free-spirited
 YOUTH.
THE GRAND PRINCESS OF RUSSIA received a proper education; since childhood she had a flare for languages, an ability to learn them quickly which went hand in hand with her curiosity and extravert nature. She has often travelled to other countries and exchanged letters with royalty from other countries, which was encouraged by her parents. She did not care much about love until she met someone... who broke her heart. Their relationship was impossible from the start, but she at least thought they would fight for it. The affair was kept in secret and left her bitter.
MARRIAGE. NEW LIFE.
When she learned that about the arrangements of her marriage to the Sultan she thought it to be a cruel joke. The man could have been her father, he already had children almost her age, and a woman at his side. The idea of living in his harem as he would take another odalisque each night she found highly degrading. But that's what her parents - and Russia - expected from her, that was her duty, no matter what she wanted.
Her fierce protest to the idea of the marriage resulted in a big argument with her family. Eudoxia promised to drown herself during the journey to Stambul or pierce Sultan's heart with a dagger during their first night together. But neither of those promises came true. The clear waters of Bosphorus were too beautiful to drown in them, and her husband seemed too gentle and respectful to end his life.
Her curiosity was greater than prejudice and soon she was getting to know the culture of her husband's country and the rules of the living in his harem.
FUTURE Just like her mother she is devoted orthodox Christian and vowed to her family to protect the interests of orthodox minority in Stanbul and the whole Empire under Osman rule. However, since her arrival in the new home she seems to be intrigued and enamoured with beauty of Islam and culture which is quite different to what she got used to.
Her heart is at war with itself : struggling between the fealty to the person she once was and the one she has to become to survive in the nest of vipers, which the Topkapi Palace's harem seems to be. Will she be able to give up her faith for those she loves ? Or rather... adapt, to be better suited to fulfil the destiny God himself bestowed upon her ?

What current conflicts does your character face?
As a young girl, Irina didn’t understand why her brothers were always put first other than the fact that they were older.  She was just as smart, just as strong, and just as intuitive as they were. They were siblings were they not? Then why does she often get told to sit down and watch or embroider some flowers? How was this fair? These were beneath her, the grand duchess wailed, refusing to be treated as such and would not stop her cries until she got what she wanted which was to have the same education as her brothers. She truly was her mother’s daughter people whispered seeing how ambitious and assertive the grand duchess was. Her chin was always held high and knew exactly what she wanted which people saw as intimidating. Irina felt like she needed to put this façade up to be taken seriously even with in her family. It becomes a conflict because at one point it gets tiring. It’s exhausting to put such a cold and hard front but she knows she has to in order for her to survive her in brother’s court— or anywhere for that matter. She had to be strong in Swedish court, establish that she is more than just the youngest prince’s wife. Now that he has passed, Irina continues to fight for her place but now back in Russian court, proving herself to be important but because she’s female and a woman, it makes it a little a harder. She has dreams for herself and for her beloved Russia, which her family has helped build and fortify. Sometimes she wonders is it all worth it? This is what she asks herself continuously.
What are some potential plotlines you are interested in pursuing?
It was always about family for Irina. The things she does, the things she wants to achieve is all for the Rurik family name. Despite her pride, she knew that a marriage outside of Russia was her destiny to which she gracefully accepted to keep Russia’s neighbor, Sweden, as an ally. It pained her greatly to be away from her family but she did it with no complains. Now a widow, she knows that her place is to be a mother to her children and guardian to her eldest son who will inherit his father’s lands however there is still that itch, a desire to more than that, a desire for power. Which was only soothed when her mother called her back to Russian court shortly after his death. She aides her brothers as a councilor, representative, and as a mediator— heavens know what they’ll do to each other. The grand duchess knows that the tsarina is still getting to know the Russian court and by the order of her mother, she helps the French woman assimilate into Russian customs despite of her not so subtle ways. She helps the queen mother oversee and run the court and household. Now in Lisbon, her one goal is to see her youngest sister married. Irina wants to help oversee her betrothal and make sure it’s as powerful as hers to both make Russia stronger but to toughen up her sister as well. In short, Irina finds ways to become indispensible to her brothers, make them see that they need her. She cannot be their equal; She can never be tsarina, no, but she vows to see to it that a Rurik will always be on the Russian throne no matter what.
three bullet-points.
Nobody needed to tell Irina that the Russian court was initially mildly disappointed that the 3rd Rurik child was female. She could see it in their eyes that they had hoped she was a boy. The grand duchess was just as disappointed as they were too. Why must she have to wail and fight for her right to be as educated and skilled as her older brothers? It was not becoming of a grand duchess to learn such masculine activities such riding and archery, they said. But Irina simply did not take no for an answer. She learned these skills, along with languages, politics, and literature, wanting only to be taught the same things as her brothers. Why was she not allowed to have the same education? She was never going to be tsarina anyway, a young Irina argued. Although her brothers were still prioritized, she made sure she excelled to prove to everyone that she was just as capable as them. Deep down the eldest grand duchess envied her brothers; she envied how everything was much easier for them whilst she had to throw a tantrum before being heard.
Assertive and astute, these were attributes she learned from her mother that, to this day, has been engraved into her psyche. Her pride is her strength but it can easily be turned into hubris, which will one day either be the cause of her success or her ruination. If she wants something, she must fight for it. That’s what she has been doing all her life, fighting for what she thinks she deserves. This, in turn, has somehow made her as cold as the snow that falls on Russia, her personality forming around the ideology of being a fighter. She hides the fact that she grows tired of it and wishes things were different. It was a heavy burden to bear and there was no one to blame for it but herself.
Prince Magnus of Sweden, duke of värmland was the youngest brother of the-then King of Sweden. His marriage to Irina kept the Swedish at bay from invading Russia’s territories. The grand duchess wouldn’t say she was exactly thrilled with the match but she didn’t oppose it either. It was commanded and she simply had to comply; she didn’t have much of a choice anyway. She was prepared for her new life away from Russia and performed her duties as a wife, bearing the prince 3 children namely: Sveinn, Astrid, and Kjell. However, the prince died in battle shortly after the birth of their 3rd child. They were only married for 6 years. His death devastated Irina greatly. Though since she bore him children, they get to keep their father’s lands. The 1st year she spent in Sweden after her husband’s passing was very difficult. When her mother called her back to Russia, she hesitated at first but later came home, bringing her children with her. She found strength being in her homeland, and oddly enough, renewed vigour and a newfound purpose.

Have you watched the great? How "sometimes true" is it?
Hi so first of all I took a muscle relaxer because I've pulled a muscle in my back so this might loose coherence.
Most of what I saw of it in trailers was inaccurate.
It seems they're trying to model Peter III more like the infamous very "Russian" antics of Peter I (Peter the Great) instead of having any accurate portrayal of him.
Peter III did not speak Russian as a first language or even with any fluency at the time Catherine was married to him. His mother was the daughter of Peter the Great but his father was a German duke whose family was ruling Denmark at the time. As such, Peter III was very non-Russian. He self-identified as German and his mother was part of the wave of "Western educated" nobles that greatly destabilized Russia. For one, many Russian nobles such as Catherine Petronova (Peter III's mom) spoke French as a first language, German as a second, and then finally maybe Russian as a third. Peter the Great had sought to bring Western innovations to make Russia a stronger nation but instead the royal families of Western Europe took this invitation to engage with Russia (and literally engage Russian nobles) as a way in which to slowly break the nation down. If you can marry their royals with your royals... well suddenly everyone is a German noble and you can successfully consolidate power under one European empire. Do make note that Peter the Great would have absolutely loathed Peter III and his father Charles Frederick. The entire reason we got Peter III in power in the first place was because while Peter the Great fucked (2 wives, 14 kids) he didn't successfully fuck enough to have a son outlive him to rule--- and precisely that he wasn't dying fast enough was why his eldest son Alexei briefly fucked off to Austria (so I mean no throne for you) before dying (mmmm dying from torture basically at the hands of his dad lol).
Peter the Great's immediate successor was Catherine I (his wife) as Russian has generally always operated under Tsar & Tsarina "co-rule"--- debatable how involves most tsarinas are while their husband lives but does set the precedent that should the Tsar die his wife will rule until the next in succession is old enough to take over. Catherine's death then put into power Empress Elizabeth (Peter I's eldest daughter) who by all historical accounts was a pretty solid Tsarina. Well though some stupid people will tell you Elizabeth had to stage a coup to gain power from 2 month old Ivan VI, son of her uncle Ivan V who had once upon a time co-ruled with Peter the Great before dying (possibly purposefully assassinated by his brother). Ivan V was entirely blind and senile by age 27... It was assumed that either Ivan VI would inherent these traits OR was actually illigitimate--- Ivan V was... Perhaps never all there enough to consummate his marriage. At any rate, Elizabeth had Ivan VI moved to a secure palace where he'd be allowed to live out his life under strict orders for him to be killed should anyone ever try and use him as a tool in a coup. It was the 1700s what do you want from me.
Elizabeth was Peter the Great's eldest daughter and was assumed even before Alexei's death to have some potential as a successor--- as such her education reflected it. It wasn't uncommon at all for the Russian throne to go to the eldest sister of a Tsar if he was childless, so eldest daughters were often given special tutors. She successfully navigated the War of Austrian Succession and the Seven Years War. Unfortunately, her fiancé died before her marriage AND as she was unmarried & at the time childless she could not gain a husband before her mother died and she took the throne. Yeah dudes in 1727 sucked ass and were like lmao an UNMARRIED, CHILDLESS EMPRESS OF RUSSIA??? 0/10 unfuckable her nephew is the heir apparent & there's not a high change to knock her up with a boy before he'd be able to claim the throne. 🙃
WHO WAS ELIZABETH'S NEPHEW? PETER THE FUCKING THIRD! Son of Mr. Exiled to Russia for Trying to Overthrow His Uncle as King of Sweden and Mrs. I Was Never Assumed to Have Any Political Worth By My Father So He Didn't Really Care What I Did.
As I said before, Peter III identified as a German and didn't speak fuck all Russian. He acted like a German prince and really wanted to BE a German prince. Enter Catherine II (Catherine the Great) a Prussian (is she more technically Austrian than German? who fucking remembers) princess. Empress Elizabeth actually was responsible for the matching of Catherine to Peter III. She knew that Russian needed a strong Austrian alliance since Peter III's reign would be highly scrutinized (and exploited) by the still pissed off Swedes. Catherine (then Sophie, nicknamed Fike) came from a reportedly abusive and cold mother to Russian to be wed to a drunken baby bitch boy who played with toys. Princess Joanna (Catherine's mother) immediately became a huge pain in the ass when she recognized that according to Russian custom her daughter could become Empress. Joanna was actually BANNED FROM RUSSIA FOR SPYING IN BEHALF OF THE AUSTRIAN EMPEROR by Empress Elizabeth following Catherine's arrival there. Catherine also was famously deathly ill upon her arrival to Russia and would have continued to worsen if she'd followed the medical advise prescribed by Joanna (who was anti-bloodlettting). Joanna sent a Lutheran pastor to hold a final confession for Catherine assuming she'd die and Catherine famously turned him away in favor of the Orthodox father attending to her. Empress Elizabeth fucking loved that shit. Upon getting well, Caterine converted to Orthodoxy (both her parents where BIG MAD) at which point she took the name Екатерина Алексеевна (Ekaterina Alekseyvna/ Catherine "daughter of Alexei")--- now when non-Russians take fake patronymics it's usually the russified version of their father's name or a variant of Vladimir but I've seen theorized Alexei may have been the Orthodox Father's name and I think that's more fun anyway.
Catherine hated Peter but she loved Elizabeth (mostly because of the fuck your mom be a strong woman like me) and immediately threw herself into becoming deserving of the Russian throne. She practiced her Russian lessons so long and with such frequency that she actually gave herself pneumonia. Peter though did not make the moves to he deserving off the Russian throne. He was a Lutheran, he hardly spoke Russian, and insisted on spending as much time with Germans as possible. Once his rule began he was even devising a way to give as much Russian terrority to the German royal family as possible.
Can you even believe?
Catherine had won the favor of the advisors around her husband quickly as no one loves a weak Tsar and was able to stage a coup and froce Peter III to abdicate about 6 months into Peter's actual reign. Peter III died later... Potentially in an assassination potentially not. Catherine also potentially had Ivan VI assassinated or maybe he died in a failed coup attempt by people who wanted a controllable Tsar who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️.
At any rate, no the show doesn't look accurate. I appreciate that they've taken the stance that it's not supposed to be either. There's a lot about the ways Catherine has been portrayed in media & by historians that smacks of sexism--- you often see her touted as being a huge slut who fucked her way into power but that entirely ignores that fact that she was an extremely well educated woman who got into and held power for so long by her OWN MERITS. She also was extremely dedicated to following in Peter the Great's footsteps in bringing positive aspects of Westernization to Russia without degrading the Russian culture as lesser. She never lost her Austrian accent when she spoken Russian, she was always more comfortable reading in French, and French was often the first language of her children BUT she is essentially responsible for the creation of Russia's art culture and Russian nobility actually being Russian in culture if not through ethnicity/nationality. She also did some of the largest expansions of the empire in her time which you know is good or bad depending which point you're arguing from.

Weddings in "Tsarina's" canvas, oil 140х140 2010, Ekaterina Dmitrieva
canvas, oil 140х140 2010 In a bright sunny day especially many wedding processions here have gathered, at an entrance to park the stopper was formed of the decorated limousines. Under extraordinary hot sun брачующиеся stride in all touching greatness, joining a celebration of architecture of the Bazhenovsky palace. They carefree take seats on a soft lawn, rejoice to a holiday and forthcoming happiness. But wedding atmosphere is already heated by the scorching sun in windless air. A heat. But here the sky has already turned black, and the thunder has thundered. The rain washes off a holiday from persons of visitors together with a make-up. Downpour streams expel them from Tsaritsynsky manor, causing allegory with? Exile from Paradise? In cloths of old masters. Not all have realised inevitability of coming nearer elements. Someone carefree luxuriates in beams of a shining sun and has fun in a shade of trees in scenery? A paradise Garden?. In the middle of radiating a life and light of a fresh green lawn, how a reminder on fragility of all? The scattered rests of an old palace gape on the sun as in desert the decayed bones of the wanderers, ventured to cross this ocean of sand. Work was exhibited from March, 19 till March, 28th on art salon at the Central House of the Artist 2010

Abbreviations and references:
Охота медведь - Bear Hunt - OMD
Восходящая тьма - Rising Darkness - VTM
Agent 81 - May be referred to as Agent 81, Agent Gabor or Ms. Ivanova
Agent 135 - May be referred to as Agent 135, Agent Petrescu or Mr Bunin
Agent 136 - May be referred to as Agent 136, Agent Pavlov or Mr Mikhailov
Details:
The VTM were a group of radical anti-magicks operating in and around Moscow; the group sought out and subsequently killed magicks living within their area of operation, producing media that showcased their crimes and was used to threaten any other potential magicks. The group was led by Konstantin Dorohkov ("The Boss") and Ekaterina Zhirova ("The Tsarina"), and had approximately 20 members, though no more than 5 ever attended a crime.
General: Proceedings began in the 42nd meeting of 2013 at the American Headquarters in New York City, NY. Director Chairmouse presented a case headed by Agent Petrescu; the case, known since as "Operation Okhota medved" was put forward for volunteers. Agent Petrescu selected Agent Gabor, who was further briefed in Briefing Room 874 (tape available). Agents Gabor and Petrescu were referred to SHROUD; Agent Gabor was provided a blonde wig and hazel lenses, and Agent Petrecu's head was shaved, and he was provided with blue lenses. Both agents were given a new wardrobe and made familiar with their new aliases - Ms Olga Ivanova and Mr Alexei Bunin.
The two were flown to Sheremetyevo International Airport, where they were met by Agent Pavlov, and driven to Moscow. Agent Pavlov housed the agents in his home until the time of the next VTM meeting - Agent Pavlov had infiltrated the group several months before, and was a member highly trusted by Dorohkov and Zhirova. At this meeting Agents Gabor and Petrescu were introduced to the group, and though Agent Pavlov and Agent Petrescu report hostility between Agent Gabor and Miss Zhirova, the two were inducted into the group on "Mr Mikhailov"'s recommendation.
Agents Gabor and Petrescu, as Ms Ivanova and Mr Bunin, spent the following six weeks working with the VTM on a case of a suspected family of werewolves living in the Taganskaya Area. The agents observed how the group studied the targets and created a detailed plan before attacking the family. It was later found that all four members of the family were lycanthropes. Despite attempted intervention by all three agents, the attack went ahead and was successful.
In early January 2014, the group began tailing another target, a suspected medium. Agent Gabor was added to the research team, and Agents Petrescu and Pavlov joined the team being dispatched to kill the target. Whilst the Mr Mikhailov and Mr Bunin accompanied Mr Dorohkov and another member of the VTM to the location, Beta Squad (of the Russian Team) began to surround the medium's apartment. The medium, an agent with the Russian Team, waited at the location for their arrival. Ms Ivanova stayed behind - the remaining members of the VTM were apprehended by Delta Squad (of the Russian Team), and after a brief altercation, Agent Gabor secured Miss Zhirova. Mr Dorohkov and the other member were arrested at the scene, and taken into the custody of the RAS. Agents Pavlov, Petrescu and Gabor were returned to New York for debrief.
Issues and Incidents:
The mission went mostly without incident. The death count for the mission stands at 4. The only injuries sustained were those done by Miss Zhirova to Agent Gabor; a small laceration on the cheek and shoulder and various bruises. Medical attention was not required.
Conclusion:
Mission successful. Mr Dorohkov and Miss Zhirova remain in RAS custody at the facility in Alaska, and other members were detained and reformed before being released, and monitored for 18 months.
