Note This is not accurate and should not be treated as such. (More detailed note at the bottom)
I was listening to Lover (the album, not just the song) and i was hit with a realization; one that's been a long time coming.
I realized that maybe Taylor and Joe were never meant to last and that maybe the signs were there all along.
You can hear in the songs she put out throughout their relationship that she was always afraid it would end, that what they had wasn't enough to sustain itself (New Year's Day, Cornelia Street, Peace, The Great War).
And that doesn't sound right.
She also felt that for their love to survive, she had to pretend like all the bad in the world didn't exist – block it out, ignore it (i forgot that you existed, paris, lavender haze)
And she even sang about running away, just the two of them. (The Lakes)
And a relationship that can't withstand any outside force like that is going to crumble eventually.
So while they were obviously right for each other during the time they were together, i think maybe they were never meant to truly last.
The More Detailed Note: this is based on very little information, which is pretty much just Taylor's lyrics. I just lke dissecting Taylors lyrics because they have so much to them.
