Yoel Roth, PhD used to be in charge of the trust and safety team at Twitter. This is a must-read article to better understand how the far right is attacking anyone who wants to guard against disinformation being shared on social media. Consequently, the link above is a gift 🎁 link, so anyone can read the entire article, even if they do not subscribe to the NY Times.
Below are some excerpts:
When I worked at Twitter, I led the team that placed a fact-checking label on one of Donald Trump’s tweets for the first time. Following the violence of Jan. 6, I helped make the call to ban his account from Twitter altogether. Nothing prepared me for what would happen next. Backed by fans on social media, Mr. Trump publicly attacked me. Two years later, following his acquisition of Twitter and after I resigned my role as the company’s head of trust and safety, Elon Musk added fuel to the fire. I’ve lived with armed guards outside my home and have had to upend my family, go into hiding for months and repeatedly move. This isn’t a story I relish revisiting. But I’ve learned that what happened to me wasn’t an accident. It wasn’t just personal vindictiveness or “cancel culture.” It was a strategy — one that affects not just targeted individuals like me, but all of us, as it is rapidly changing what we see online. Private individuals — from academic researchers to employees of tech companies — are increasingly the targets of lawsuits, congressional hearings and vicious online attacks. These efforts, staged largely by the right, are having their desired effect: Universities are cutting back on efforts to quantify abusive and misleading information spreading online. Social media companies are shying away from making the kind of difficult decisions my team did when we intervened against Mr. Trump’s lies about the 2020 election. Platforms had finally begun taking these risks seriously only after the 2016 election. Now, faced with the prospect of disproportionate attacks on their employees, companies seem increasingly reluctant to make controversial decisions, letting misinformation and abuse fester in order to avoid provoking public retaliation.
I encourage you to use the gift link above and read the entire article. It is worth your time.

Where are these women who wore these clothes? Where are they now?
Are these women displaced? Maybe in a refugee camp.
Or were they raped and murdered?
Maybe these guys are just perverts but didn’t actually do anything to them? But they are so brash and arrogant.
I truly have no clue about the fate of these women. And that terrifies me.

How many times can one man rip off followers before the sheep wake up. Most MAGAts can’t afford to support Trump at any level. Since 2016 Trump operatives, RNC operatives, and evangelical charlatans have been telling MAGAts to skip meals so they can donate more money.
I’d feel bad for these feeble minded gullibles if it weren’t for the fact that they want to kill me and those who share my progressive beliefs.

Community does not need this!! But they’re loud in the comments about how harmful this could be for the community and divination and other spiritual practices and traditions! Thankfully!! I was just talking about spiritual psychosis on my close friends on Instagram yesterday and then I see things like this and post just went viral of some woman absolutely losing it, snot running out her nose and everything over the eclipse.
The fear mongering and demonization of spiritual teachings, astrology, tarot and spiritual practices and traditions is about to start becoming very big. It was already a really prominent thing oppressors have used for ages especially against poc who practice forms of witchcraft or deity worship they brought with them from home. I was just watching a docu-series yesterday that highlighted how the native population on mt. Shasta were forced to leave and practiced ritual and held ceremonies in the caves of mount Shasta and those who colonized would go into those caves after they left and preform mockeries of their ceremonies and rituals as entertainment.
We’re about to step into a reality and time where spiritual people, practitioners and others within the community will be replacing celebrities and individuals of high rank or people who hold a lot of power in this world and I said before that the oppressor has a very specific recipe for oppression and trying to keep people (especially in the west) as unaware and as stuck in perpetual karmic cycles and systems as much as possible. And this is just yet another technique they use to discredit individuals with gifts. They use psychics and astrologers and others themselves to help them predict and interpret what’s coming.
They use these types of stories or ideas to fuel radical religious beliefs and ideas that are built upon fear mongering and hatred, they use religious institutions and manipulated versions of their Bible and beliefs and create division within the west. Vast majority of republicans are statistically uneducated and are conservative who hold onto heavy religious beliefs and views to back up, support and justify their actions and beliefs. Heavily similar to antebellum America and the justification of slavery and the mistreatment of African American people.

To add onto that, this movie about tarot does not accurately portray what tarot really is and how it works whatsoever but guess who’ll believe it and perpetuate it. Half the negative ideas that are swirling around about metaphysical, Wiccan or spiritual practices are due to pop culture and horror movies and the individuals who sit at their desks in the dark scribbling away these plots and releasing these movies.

Twitter has ceased to be an independent company after merging with a newly formed shell firm called X Corp., driving speculation about what Elon Musk intends for the social media platform.
Twitter “no longer exists” after being merged with X Corp., according to an April 4 document submitted in a California court for a lawsuit filed against the company and its former chief executive, Jack Dorsey, last year by conservative activist Laura Loomer.

Forever baffled by people who object to fictional characters being depicted as treating each other in socially unacceptable ways, and conclude the best way to express this objection is by treating actual other living human beings in socially unacceptable ways

Still thinking about that post making fun of Biden saying he'd use the military responsibly and not start more forever wars... you do not have to agree with other aspects of his foreign policy to acknowledge that he lived up to both of those things. Of course, a lot of people on social media think American troops are on the ground in places they objectively are not which is... great... but Biden has resisted deploying US troops and has not started any new wars and in fact took a huge hit his approval rating have still not really recovered from for ending the forever war everyone was complaining about for years. None of those facts are incompatible with criticizing how he handles Israel/Palestine. It's so frustrating honestly I'm not even close to an expert on foreign policy and tend to feel unqualified to talk about it, but the people reblogging that post are just fundamentally unserious! It's just about getting a dunk in! That's not how grown-ups do politics!
Also if anyone is thinking of responding to this calling me a shill or saying I'm defending Biden I kindly invite them to learn to read.

Yes there is a double standard in the news media AND among members of the public.
Democrats are held to a higher standard. Democrats are always expected to act like grown-ups while Republicans are allowed to wreck institutions of democracy while getting only a perfunctory tsk tsk.
If Biden gave a bizarre and semi-coherent speech like this the media and users on social media would go into convulsions of disparagement. But because it came from Trump, the general feeling is that "it's just Donald being Donald"...
youtube
...and that doesn't even touch on fact checking.
The House drama is another case in point. One candidate for Speaker, Gym Jordan, turned a blind eye to sex abuse as an assistant coach; and the leader of the anti-McCarthy coup, Matt Gaetz, has an appetite for girls under 18. Republicans are like the villains in their own QAnon conspiracy folklore.
Jen Sorensen, an American national treasure, touched on this double standard in a cartoon.

With the emergence of every new revelation of GOP idiocy, incompetence, or downright treason, publicly ask what the reaction would be if a living Democrat had done the same.
Don't let membership in the GOP excuse people for being anti-democratic dickheads.
