Becoming: Chapter 4- About last night
As always. I hope that you enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed writing.
A/N: This is my 4th part to this TRR series. Karis and Liam finally get their “Proper Date.” Her thoughts are in BOLD

After they had breakfast in bed following a night of catching up at Karis’ Paris flat, Liam excused himself and headed to his hotel to get dressed for the day that he has planned for them.
Her phone buzzed. It was Misti..
After catching up with Misti, Karis opened her largest piece of luggage; knowing that she didn’t pack anything extremely dressy. She mostly brought things that she could wear into the office. She didn’t really anticipate that during these couple months she would spend in Paris she would bump into Liam or anyone else for that matter. She pulled out a black pencil skirt and a bustier top and laid them across the bed.
Liam mentioned that she should pack an overnight bag as well. She threw in some sexy white lingerie that she sometimes wore under her clothes. She never knew why but it always did wonders for her confidence and for some reason, she felt that she would need a double dose tonight.
She didn’t really know what else to put in the bag so she included lounge pants, her favorite hoodie, a bikini, some jeans, a cute blouse, and some fuzzy socks. If there was anything else she had forgotten, she is sure Liam would make up for it.
She showered, ran the flat iron through her hair, and did her makeup before putting her Granny’s diamond studs in her ears. She squeezed into her top and shimmied into the tight skirt that shamelessly showed off her curves. She buckled her strappy heels and had just sat down painting her fingernails a bubble gum pink when she got a text from Liam.
She blushed furiously at the picture he sent. He looked extremely dapper in his tuxedo, yet all she could think about is taking it off. Get ahold of yourself and just enjoy him tonight Karis, she thought to herself.
Before she knew it there was a knock at the door. She could feel her heart beating in her throat. But why was she so nervous? It was just Liam. She opened the door and there he stood. All 6 foot 4, 240 lbs of him standing there looking like a snack in that damned tuxedo.
He smiled at her and said, “Hey Angel.”
She was sure she was having an out of body experience until he pushed passed her, kissing her on the cheek.
“Sorry love, may I use your restroom? I have to go when I get nervous.” She just stood there mouth agape.
What just happened? What does he have to be nervous about?
Moments later she heard the toilet flush and the sink running.
Well, at least I know he washes his hands.
He emerged from the restroom moments later.
“Are you ok?”
“I am now. Shall we?” he asked as he offers her his arm.
“You look absolutely stunning, love.”
“Thanks, Liam, you don’t look too shabby yourself,” she smirked.
“Liam? Would you like to tell me where we are going now?”
He smiled at her, “Not a chance.”
They headed down to the black SUV that awaited. He opened the door for her and helped her inside. He walked around to the driver’s side door and she leaned across to open the door for him.
“These are for you.” He handed her a bouquet of long stemmed roses.
“More flowers Liam?” she blushed.
“I have more than a year to make up for…”
This man is unbelievable.
After a short drive, they pulled up to his hotel. He helped her out of the car and had the valet park. He opened the door for her and she winked at him.
“Liam, you’re not wasting anytime huh? Right back to your hotel…”
He chuckled. “I have something very special prepared for you.”
They took the elevator up to the top floor and headed down to the end of the hall where he used a keycard to open up the door. He led her through his suite out to a stunning rooftop where there was a table set for a very romantic candlelit dinner for two.
She walked over to the rail to take in the view of the city. The view of the Eiffel tower at night in the background was stunning. She was sure that she had never seen a landscape in her entire life more beautiful.
“Liam, this view is–”
“Absolutely resplendent, breathtaking even. I’ve noticed.”
She looked over her shoulder to see him staring at her, she shook her head. She could feel her cheeks warming as he stepped up behind her wrapping his arms around her, nipping at her neck. After a few minutes he asked her to join him at the table, pulling out her chair.
“What a gentleman you are.”
“I try.”
They tucked into a five course meal prepared by a personal chef he hired for the night. Bacon wrapped dates, Gnocchi soup, caesar salad, pan seared sea scallops over shallot herb pasta with fresh steamed veggies and baklava for dessert. When she couldn’t eat another bite he rose from the table and took her back through the suite and down the elevator to the next leg of their proper date.
They took a long stroll alongside of the Seine River.
They held hands and slowly walked taking in the sights and sounds of the river. They talked about Karis’ internship and her plans to head back to the states to finish up undergrad before going to law school.
“There are several amazing options for law school in Cordonia. I know a few people and could easily get you into the school of your choice.”
A cachinnate laugh escaped her.
“You’re serious, aren’t you?”
He smiles wide, not answering.
“Wow, this has been nice. No one has ever put this much thought into a date with me. You did all of this since last night?”
“Yes, and the night is still young. I’d like to personally thank the clowns who didn’t appreciate you. It has led us to this moment. I want to stay in this moment with you.”
He turned to her brushing his lips against hers. They strolled for a while longer before Liam checked his watch.
“We need to head back to the hotel before we are late.”
Liam picks up the pace and Karis giggles. “What the heck Li?
When they get back to the Lobby of the hotel, Liam pulled out his phone and tapped the screen.
Karis heard him say, “Rhys party of 2.” Then he turned to her.
“This might be a good time for me to take a picture of you. No one ever believes me when I talk about you. They think I’ve made you up in my mind. I need proof that angels exist. Go stand over by that table and pose for me. This picture will be what I look at to get me through the times when we are apart.”
She smiled at him and complies posing for the picture he snaps with his phone. Just then a man beckons them down a hall and into the spa. She smiled when she realized what is happening.
“You really listened to me, huh? Are we here because I told you I’d never had a professional massage?”
“Maybe,” he smirked.
This man is too good to be true.
The man escorted them to a room with very dim lights. There were two massage tables set up and soothing music in the background. The man excused himself while Liam and Karis got undressed. She noticed that he hadn’t taken his eye off of her while she disrobed. She looked Liam in the eyes and slowly let her clothes fall away from her body.
“You’re killing me Karis.”
“You don’t have to look.” she smiles seductively.
“I keep trying to look away. I can’t. You aren’t wearing a bra,” his mouth falls open as he neatly hangs his clothes on the rack.
“That top didn’t require one. I wasn’t expecting to get undressed until later.” she smirked.
When they are both down to just their underwear They both lay across the tables under the sheet as instructed. Two men returned to give them an hour long massage. When they are done both Karis and Liam are relaxed, almost to the point of slumber. They were told not to get up right away. To take their time getting dressed before leaving.
“Liam, I have no words. Tonight–”
He interrupts, “Is just getting started.”
When they are dressed they head back up to his suite where they find the jacuzzi has been filled with a bubble bath and there are rose petal scattered. There is soft music playing and two glasses of champagne sit on the counter.
“You weren’t kidding when you said you were going to spoil me today.”
They quickly slipped out of their clothes and into to the bubble filled tub. They clinked their glasses together as Liam said, “to fate.”
They both took sips of the champagne then Liam took her glass sitting it to the side.
“Now what?” she smiles.
He grabs her wrist pulling her into his lap.
“Now, I get to bathe you, and then..”
He pulls her in for a lingering kiss and a moan escapes her. After a few minutes he picks her up bridal style and takes her into the shower where they both rinse the bubbles from their bodies. Before they get too lost in each other she stops him.
“Go get my bag? I have something for you.”
He retrieves her bag and leaves her in the restroom to change. After a few minutes she opens the door to a naked Liam with a black gift bag covering his length. His eyes go wide when he drinks in the sight of her in her white lingerie.
“See something you like, your highness?”
‘Karis, you look.. wow. I just… you look like an angel. My angel.”
She blushes. “What’s in the bag?”
“Huh, oh yeah, this? It’s for you.”
He hands her the bag and begins to explain.
“I know that your internship is very important to you. I also know that you are 6 months away from finishing undergrad. I know that you have goals and I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I distracted you. So, I know this may sound juvenile but I want there to be no mistake about my intentions. It’s a promise ring. I promise you that I am yours alone, mind, heart and body. When you are done with school, I’m coming to get you and upgrading you to an engagement ring.”
“That’s fair,” she says as she takes the velvet box out of the bag opening it.
Her eyes go wide. She blinks back tears. He takes the ring from the box and places it on her ring finger.
God, I love this man.
“Do you promise to save yourself for me in every way?”
“Of course I do,” she says in a quiet voice.
“Do you like it?”
“Li, I love it. It’s gorgeous.”
She throws her arms around his neck kissing him deeply. He picks her up, her legs wrap tightly around his waist. He walks her over to the bed, he unclasped her bra before gently laying her down. He ran his strong hands down the sides on her body taking her panties with them.
“God, you’re a vision.” he said as he kissed her sides lightly.
She squirmed beneath him rubbing his bald head. He moved over kissing her stomach with an open mouth agonizingly slow.
“Oh Liam,” she moaned.
He propped her legs over his shoulders pulling her to the edge of the bed. He dipped his head kissing her inner thighs while his fingers found her middle.
“Karis,” his eyes went wide.
“I have never had another man have that effect on me. It’s your fault. I’m not sorry.”
He slipped 2 fingers inside of her warm drenched center. He slurped her juices as he skillfully teased her clit. She struggled to catch her breath as her body involuntarily spasmed. Her back arched off of the bed under his touch.

She opened her eyes and propped herself up on her elbows watching as Liam’s face emerges from down below. His face is covered in her juices and his chin is dripping. He smiles.

“It was different. But not because you were a virgin. But it was because it was the first time I have ever made love.”
She was confused by what he said initially.
“I mean sure, i’ve had sex before. But I have never been in love with anyone before you. So, yes it was different. Life changingly different. I love you Karis.”
She blushed.
“Liam, I love you too.”
They laid there in silence for a little while longer.
“Do you think we could do that again? I want to be on top.”
He smiled seductively, “Do you think you’re ready for that?”
“I guess we will find out.”
He pulled her on top of him. She was straddling his hips as he caressed her soft skin. They kissed for a long time before she built up the confidence to lower herself onto him.
When it was over, they both fell into an exhausted slumber as the sun came up outside of the window of the Persian paradise.

how do they tend to dress?
She is curvy, very busty with a full bottom and wide hips, but she refuses to let that dictate how she dresses. She wears what she feels comfortable in and if anyone has a problem with how she’s dressed, FUCK THEM! If she wants to wear a bodycon dress or a pair of skinny jeans that accentuate her every curve she will. More important than the clothes she puts on her body she wears confidence in everything she wears, from the skimpy bikini on the beach or by the pool, to the oversized shirt and a pair of leggings she feels good in what she wears because she’s comfortable in her body and it shows.
do they like how they look?
She loves and accepts her curves. She doesn’t care about the size on her clothes, this is who she is. She has actually dumped a drink on a guy for calling her a fat ass before she told him to learn to respect women unless he wanted to die alone.
are they an only child or do they have any siblings?
Only child though she grew up in the Rhys family and had several friends and playmates around.
are they a morning person or night owl?
Night owl. She curses Liam out when his alarm wakes her. She’s been known to throw pillows at him for being too noisy while getting ready too. Don’t talk to her before she’s had her coffee unless you want your head chewed off. If you are feeling brave you can try after one cup, but you should really wait until she’s halfway through her third.
are they a cat person or a dog person?
She’s a fuzzy animal person. Cats, dogs, bunnies she thinks they are cute. She absolutely loves cats but she doesn’t hate dogs. She knows Liam is more of a dog person but she really wants a cat.

Chicago deep dish pizza she got spoiled when she lived there and now pizza isn’t the same.

Crown and the Flame. She and Liam has a bet who Kenna would end up. He thought for sure she would end up with the lifelong friend Dominic, she said no the snarky Diavlos was more her speed, imagine their surprise when Raydan the Lythikosian spy stole her heart. She also has a subscription to a monthly TC&TF box, she may have a subscription box problem.

She can speed type without looking at the screen.

No. She was a child when she met Liam and she more grew into love with him. He was apart of her everyday like and soon became more than just a friend to her. She is the type of girl who needs to really know someone first, much to the dismay of her college boyfriends who thought she would put out because she was “fat.”

She doesn’t care as much about fashion as Olivia does. Her favorite thing about pregnancy is the fact that Olivia finally stops giving her shit about dressing comfortably. Oversized shirts (until they aren’t) and leggings are a must! She loves the vintage retro look of clothes more than the modern styles. Slouchy boots are a must in fall and winter and summer she lives in flip flops much to Olivia’s dismay.
do they like how they look?
Everything but her hair. It’s not that she hates her hair she just dyed it once when she was seventeen and there was no turning back. After that she HATES her hair being her natural color. Her hair is always dyed a funky color or three and only guys she’s known intimately know what her natural hair color is, and she likes that.
are they an only child or do they have any siblings?
Only child
are they a morning person or night owl?
Night owl. She does not understand how Bastien can be so chipper in the morning. She needs at least 8 hours of sleep to feel human.

Both! She is the kind of person to adopt every animal she sees and Olivia teases her for it. Olivia was rightfully worried when Liza and Bastien brought home Buttons the Pitt Bull, she will definitely be adopting more precious babies much to Olivia’s horror.

Pickles but that’s a pregnancy thing. She has a very big sweet tooth and loves making brownies. Only problem is even before the bun in the oven she could consume half a tray in a sitting.

Lemonade the more sour the better!

She loves crime scene dramas.
do they have any hidden talents?
Do skill and ability to knock a full grown adult male of 6 plus feet and around 200 lbs on their ass with very little physical effort count? The girl can throw a guy over her shoulder without breaking a sweat.

She didn’t until Bastien walked into her coffee shop.

Losing the people she cares about. Her ‘found’ family, since her parents were both shit who could easily walk away.

Long relaxing baths. And eating peanut butter straight from the jar, don’t tell Bas he says it’s uncivilized.

She never told her dad because she knew how badly he wanted her to get out but she wanted to be a mobster. It’s what she knew, she couldn’t imagine any other job. She’s been mob girlfriend and now mob wife so she considers her dream fulfilled. She knows the business almost as well as Bastien and Olivia.

Nope.

She’s the daughter of a mobster, married to another mobster, what do you think?! She knows how to evade them so all illegal activity she’s done has flown under their radar.

As pissed as she was at the time she is thankful her father sent her to Philadelphia, she still hates him for trying to control her a second time.
She loves her girls. If anyone ever tried to say Hope and Olivia weren’t hers she’d slug them in the face.
She actually enjoyed practicing skills with Olivia. She had been relieved when sixteen year old Olivia groaned about going to the mall. She had so much fun practicing shooting with her it became their thing.

Chapter 1 of Positive. This is an AU where Kendra(MC) never goes to Cordonia, Liam never actually tells her he is a Prince, and he loses his virginity at his bachelor party, with Kendra.

I tend to keep all of my MC names the same for the books, so TRR MC will always be Kendra, because its an Alternate Universe of the same story. Ya feel?
Also timeline for y’all because my TRR timeline looks a lil different: I have always thought social season = 1 year. Engagement tour = 6 months, but of course our king has duty’s so there is a 3-4 month lapse between the end of the social season and the beginning of the Engagement tour. There’s also a 6 month period between the boys in New York and the start of the social season. This is the same for all of my TRR AU’s unless specifically stated otherwise.
So, the crew would be in New York Roughly 2 and a half years AFTER the first time they meet MC.
I rolled in annoyance as my alarm went off again. 6 am every day, I got up and got ready to go to work. It had been over 2 years since I had last stepped foot into the bar that I had met Liam in, choosing instead to opt for a job with a more comfortable wage, but less flexibility. I let the silence of the morning seep into my soul as I packed two lunches. One for me, and one with much smaller portions.
I walked across my small town home and peeked into my sons room. He stood in his crib waiting, a big smile plastered onto his face showcasing the adorable dimples on either cheek. “Good morning, Cadence.” I smiled. His tiny hands griped the side of his crib as he peered at me excitedly, waiting for me to pick him up and let him out. “Mama!” He squealed, his young voice dragging out the word, as a toddler often does.
I put him on my hip as I turned and grabbed his outfit for the day, a light romper and a pair of tiny sneakers. “Are you ready to go bye bye? We’re going to go see your friends at daycare!” I asked, as I pulled on the last of his clothes. He excitedly ran for the door, trying and failing to turn the knob.
I grabbed our food for the day and my coffee and helped him down the stairs and into my car, strapping him into his car seat.
Two years ago after I had learned I was pregnant with a strangers baby, one who had to return home for an arranged marriage, I panicked. I waited until I could see a doctor and heard the undeniable heart beat before I called my dad in tears and explained the situation.
My father and I both tried for the duration of the pregnancy to locate Liam, but to no avail. I couldn’t remember the country he claimed to be from any longer, and he had no face book, left no email or phone number, I had no way to track him down. I had resigned to being a single parent with the father never knowing he had a child out there, and once the baby came, I no longer cared.
Delivery and pregnancy both were relatively simple, and I gave birth to a healthy 8 lbs little boy at 2 in the morning on August 18th. He shifted my entire perspective. Being a mother was hard enough, but being a single mother proved to be impossible without some form of help. My dad moved into the city to help me keep an eye on him overnight while I worked, but it was blaringly obvious that I needed a better job.
So I searched, finally landing a paralegal job at a large firm in the city. The hours were long, and the work was tedious. But it allowed me to have nights and weekends with my son, and give me enough money to get into a house with a yard and afford daycare. I was okay on my own, and I didn’t mind much that I was alone as I didn’t have to argue with someone on how to raise my child, or have to compromise on behavior. My life was actually pretty spectacular.
I dropped my son off at daycare and pulled into work with just enough time to clock in a few minutes early. I sat down inside of my cold grey cubicle, pictures of my father, Cadence and I littering the walls and attempted to eat what was supposed to pass as a breakfast sandwich
“Hey Kendra!” I heard Shelby’s overly excited voice from the other side of the thin wall. I internally groaned. Shelby meant well enough, but she was a horrible gossip and spent more time talking than she did working. Her blonde hair was pulled into a slick ponytail as she rounded the corner into my cubicle. She adorned an abstract colorful shirt paired with sleek grey pants, and her brown eyes were alight with excitement.
“Hey Shel.” I said, trying to enjoy what was left of my breakfast, “Have you heard the news!!” I sighed placing down my sandwich and turning to face her, bracing myself for whatever longwinded story was about to come from her mouth. “What news?” I asked flatly, though she didn’t seem to notice. She squealed excitedly shoving her phone in my face, “The King of Cordonia is here on his engagement tour! He’s so cute!” She said, her phone pulled up to a TMZ article. “You realize he’s engaged yeah?” I pointed out with a laugh as I scrolled through the article. My interest peeked as I recognized the countries name.
My heart froze as I realized why the name was familiar. Liam! He had been from Cordonia! I quickly handed back her phone as I powered on my own computer. “What is it?” She asked, sensing the change in my demeanor. “Cadence’s dad. I just remembered, he was from Cordonia too!” She gasped, “No way! What a coincidence, Cadence looks just like this guy too, let me show you a picture of King Rys.” I attempted to ignore her as I pulled up the search engine, but the smiling blonde immediately drew my attention.
“There’s no way.” I breathed, staring at a picture of Liam. It was certainly his face, but his eyes held a coldness I didn’t recognize/ I grabbed my jacket and my lunch, “Shelby I have to go. Cover for me?” I said over my shoulder as I raced out of the office. I pulled up any information I could about the Kings visit, according to TMZ he and the other tour members showed up last night, and were seen at the very same bar we had met at.
Hes looking for me, I realized with a start. I then headed over to the bar to see who had been on shift last night. My old manager was there when I stepped inside, “Kendra! My good friend, I was just about to call you!” I frowned. Ymir hated me, and nothing brought him more joy than my two week notice. I peered at him apprehensively, as he fished a note from behind the bar. “Here! This is from your friend with lots of money. You should bring him back around here again, they all tip very well.” He said, his Spanish accent contorting the words.
I shook my head, now I get it. Liam must have left a note for him to get in touch and Ymir wanted his business, he thought I could probably bring them all back. I mumbled a thanks as my hands shook as I opened the envelope. I expected a phone number, or address. Instead there was an invitation for the United Nations party tonight.
A sticky note was attached, written in Liam’s scribbled writing.
By now I am sure that you have realized why I had an arranged marriage, I would like to see you again if you are in New York and I beg for your audience tonight. ~Liam.
Later that night I paced the apartment, waiting for my dad to arrive to watch Cadence for the night. I debated on bringing him with me. His green eyes peering through his un-tame able blonde locks. No, I decided. I wasn’t ready for that. I wasn’t ready to share my little bug. “Vroom vroom” He said, with a big smile holding his truck up to me.
“Yes, bugga, vroom vroom!” I said with a laugh, as I ran the truck back and forth over our rug. His ever present beam filled my heart with an inexplicable joy. A resounding knock came from the door, interrupting our play. I crossed the living room and opened the door, greeting my father.
“Hey Daddy.” I said, welcoming him with a hug. “Pop pop!” I heard my sons shrill call of joy as he raced around my legs and into his grandfathers open arms.
“So, have you decided if you are going to tell him tonight or not?” My father said, cutting to the chase. He was nothing if not a blunt man, I suppose I got it honest. “No.” I replied. “What if he tries to take him? He clearly has the means too.” I said, resuming my pacing. My dad blocked my path and grabbed my shoulders. “And what if he doesn’t? Doesn’t this man deserve to know he has a son? Doesn’t he deserve to share the same joy that you have just from knowing him?”
I pouted at him, but I knew he was right. It would be wrong of me to keep this secret from Liam. I knew in my heart what the right thing was to do, but as I watched my son play on the rug, his little heart so full of innocent and joy; I thought about the possibility of having him taken from me and it felt so soul crushing. To not be there for his sleepy greeting, or his sloppy kisses, or to watch him discover the joy of life and remind me that there was more to this world than I could see. It was terrifying.
The Uber outside honked. I frowned at my dad, “I told him you would likely need a ride.” My dad said with a shrug. He had known I was getting cold feet even without talking to me. “Sly old coot.” I said, as I grabbed my jacket and made my way to door. He smiled, my son in his arms as they both waved at me, “Say bye bye, mommy.”
“buh-bye!”
The ride to the UN party only allowed for me to stew in my fears longer. The car pulled around to the front of the party, where press stood documenting each guest. I smoothed out my lavender floor length tulle dress as I stepped out. Feeling the weight of my dangling fake crystal earings sway with the movement. My chocolate colored hair was wrapped into an elegant bun, and my make up was soft, aside from the sharp winged liner on my eye lids.
I kept my eyes on the door as I approached and produced my invitation to the people at the door. They nodded me through, not giving me much time to process if I wanted to turn around. My heels clicked on the smooth marble floor beneath me as I took in the sight before me. Walking through a 2nd set of open ornate double doors. People of all walks of life mingled as the soft music played. circular tables were strewn about decorated with beautiful cream table cloths and gold roses.
I realized quickly not to touch anything, as I probably couldn’t afford it. I searched the room quickly, but didn’t see Liam. I found the place holder that had the same number on it as my invitation and took my place at the table, noting the empty five seats around me. A server brought me a glass of white wine and I sipped on it slowly.
The crowd finally began to be seated as it neared to less than five minutes before the appetizers were brought out. There were numerous speeches none of which I cared to pay attention to, sinking further into my wine. There were two boys, and three other girls seated at the table with me, all of them speaking a language I didn’t know.
At one point one of the men turned and attempted to ask for my name in english, to which I simply smiled and nodded my head as if I didn’t understand. He quickly abandoned his attempt and resumed talking to his friends. My anxiety was high, I was surrounded by food I couldn’t afford, a language and people I didn’t know, and my gracious host was no where to be found.
An hour dragged by, the meal finished and servers dragged the tables to the outer rim to make a dance floor, which most of the populous took full advantage of. One of the men seated at my table even began break dancing. I snorted into my wine, feeling the warm buzz of intoxication. A hand entered into my vision field, outstretched.
I looked up and felt my stomach leap into my throat. Liam.
“Care to join me for a dance?” He said, hand waiting. I frowned and pulled my arms closer to my chest. “Bold move for an engaged King.” I seethed. I hadn’t realized how angry the whole situation made me until I saw him. Here he was, not a care in the world, and the last few years had been rough for me. I spent countless nights without sleep, comforting my loving son through his sickness, his teething, his injuries. I loved my son very much, but parenting was hard, and I had done it alone. And here he was enjoying balls and feasts, with all the money in the world.
He was royal, and I was not, and he had no clue about Cadence and it left me wondering what his motives were in inviting me to this party in the first place. I took a long sip of my wine. He frowned at me, “It’s just a dance, I didn’t mean any harm.” He said, settling into the seat next to me. “What’s wrong?” He stated quietly.
I rolled my eyes, the alcohol spurring the anger, “I know the deal was no contact information but you could have at least said, ‘Hey, by the way, I’m a king.’ On the ferry ride back to your taxi.” I said sarcastically. He nodded, “ah.” He said, taking a sip of champagne. “You’re angry I didn’t tell you I was a prince. Would you have changed the terms then? Used our bedding as leverage to extort money? Or just bragging rights?”
I turned to him, eyes wide as I noted his dark expression. Anger laced through his voice like a striking cobra, directed at me. “Excuse you Liam. I just don’t like being blindsided.” I huffed, “I’m not sure who you think you are talking to with that tone, but it sure as hell isn’t me.”
Liam sat in silence for a moment, “King Liam.” he corrected before he stood abruptly, “I need you to come with me, I have something I need to discuss with you.” He said coldly. I scoffed at him, “I’m not going anywhere with you.” Rage and pain coarsed through me. I was hurt at his implication, but also felt the familiar tinge of guilt. He was right, together we were just Kendra and Liam, why should it matter now if he had been a prince. We both knew what we were getting into when we agreed on a week and then never speaking again.
So why did it feel like such a betrayal, an intrusion on something private. Something ours. “It’s a legal matter.” He said, his eyes burning. My heart quickened, as I stood to follow him. There was no polite outstretched hand, or elbow as I was accustomed to with Liam. He was angry, and I understood his thought process. His title shouldn’t matter unless I wanted to use it for personal gain.
I followed him out of the ballroom and down twisting and turning hallway before he hesitated on a door handle. “Liam” I said, pulling on his elbow, “I’m sorry, you’re right. It shouldn’t matter what your title is. It just startled me to find out from the media instead of you. It felt like...like an intrusion. A betrayal.” I said. Liam and I had promised long ago to just be forward with our feelings, and I hoped that he still understood that.
He ran a hand through his hair, “Sorry, it’s habit for me to watch myself around people. Everyone always wants something for you, rarely do they want you.”
My expression softened, “Liam, I wanted you. I hate that you had to go, but I understood. I wish things had been different.” I admitted. Liam smiled, “In a different life, perhaps you would be on this tour with me.” He said, his eyes twinkling as he opened the door.
“But in this life, you are not. Which means, I need you to sign this.” He said walking to a side table as I realized we were in a suite. He pulled papers and a pen from the side table, and handed them to me. I looked over it, but in my drunkenness I couldn’t focus long enough to understand it. “What is it?” I slurred. Liam gave me a sad smile. “It is a Non-disclosure agreement. It prevents you from being allowed to discuss our time together, or go to the press.”
I frowned, “Right, of course.” I said, sitting to keep my balance. Liam sighed, “how much have you had to drink.” The irratation from earlier made its reappearance. “Don’t patronize me, King Liam.” I said, pouting. “You always were a lightweight,” he muttered clearly annoyed. “Hey whats your malfunction.” I said, my words biting. He gave me a pointed look.
“You can’t sign a legal document while intoxicated. It would get thrown out in the court.” He pinched the bridge of his nose, “here, just write down your address and I’ll drop it off in the morning. I noticed you moved.” He said. “Yeah, I needed the space for...” I trailed off. I couldn’t tell him about Cadence, I didn’t have it in me. Liam cocked his head, “a dog.” I lied.
I then realized that if he saw my house the chances were high he would see Cadence too and I wasn’t ready. My brain knew I would have to tell him eventually. But not right now. I sat at the edge of the bed as I pondered what lie I could give him to keep him from asking for my address. I could fake sobriety, but he would see right through it. My mind kept spinning while Liam sat quietly and studied me.
I looked up at him through my lashes, deciding to derail the subject completely the only way I could think too through the wine filled haze. “What are you staring at?” I asked. He was leaning against the bedpost. “You are still the most beautiful girl I have ever seen.” He said wistfully. I frowned, deeply, but couldn't keep the blush off my cheeks. “Liam, arranged or not, you are still an engaged man.” He let out a bark of a laugh. “Yes, but no.” He explained. He motioned around the room. “This is my suite, do you see any of Madeline’s clothes in here?” I stared at him.
He chuckled, “Things are different in Cordonia, political marriages are allowed to be open, so long as both partners agree. Madeline has made it very clear she has no desire to pursue a romantic relationship.” he sighed. “It appears she has a romantic connection to someone at court already.” I stood, unsure of how I wanted to proceed. I wanted to stay, but I knew I should head home.
Liam had only brought me there to sign legal paperwork, and yet my gut told me there was more. Perhaps Liam was forcing himself to be extra cold, I couldn't tell, the wine impairing my senses and I had also never seen him in this setting. I stood, and brought our chests together, “does that mean its okay if I-” He leered down apprehensively, “Kendra what are you doing?” He said cutting me off. Yet he didn’t move.
I peered up at him, “Do you miss it at all?” I asked lust lacing my voice as I remembered the week we spent pent up in my apartment. I hadn't touched anyone since, and I had the sneaking suspicion he hadn’t either. “Miss what?” He asked, still not moving away from me. I could have imagined how he seemed to almost lean into me. I smiled at him through my thick lashes, and pulled on his lapels. “The way we felt together, skin on skin.” I said, lightly breathing.
He was definitely leaning into me, “We shouldn’t.” He said, his voice suddenly deeper. I frowned, “I’m sorry.” I said beginning to lean back. He put his hands on my hips and kept me flush against him. “Don’t be. I really do need you to sign the NDA.” He said huskily. I nodded, “I will.” He studied my face for a moment before bringing his head down to kiss me.
His kiss was soft, and sweet. His lips pressing on mine gently, and I could feel my knees weakening as I melted. He gently pressed me onto the bed. I could see the hint of a smile on his lips, and I could feel his quickly forming erection through his pants.
I moaned at the touch, he groaned, “I love it when you moan.” He breathed. “Can you stay tonight?” He said, kissing into my neck. I nodded, “I have to send a text.” I said, pulling my phone above my head, away from Liam’s gaze, as he planted kisses down my neckline. He pulled my dress down my hips and off by the straps as I giggled and let my dad know not to wait up for me. His response was almost immediate.
Condoms, Kendra. Cadence doesn’t need siblings.
I snorted, locking my phone and putting it face down on the nightstand. Liam looked at me hungrily, “I miss your body. I miss your laugh, I didn’t realize how much I missed you Kendra.” Liam muttered pressing kisses up my stomach. He rolled off the bed and pulled a shirt from his luggage.
I looked at him confused as he handed it to me. He smiled, “I haven't seen you in almost 2 and a half years, and we aren't doing this while you’re drunk.” He said, dropping his voice and laying next to me.
I agreed and we layed together comfortably, catching each other up on our lives, minus Cadence of course. I would tell him soon, just not yet. We laughed, and talked, and reminisced for hours, finally falling asleep tangled in each others arms.

Sparkfun’s Spectacle - Objects in Motion

Spectacle is made for people who don’t want to get into electronics as a hobby but want to add lights, sound or motion to their projects. What it Comes With:
1x Spectacle Director Board
This is the first board in your circuit. It allows for a battery pack or power adaptor to plug in to power your project and it has a program audio port that allows you to upload your script.
1x Spectacle Motion Board
This board allows for up to five micro servos to be attached and included in your project.
1x Spectacle Button Board
This board has an on-board button and 8 slots for additional buttons to be added.
2x Sub-Micro Size Servo
The servos do the moving! Up to five micro servos can be included for each motion board. These servos also come with a package of attachable micro arm/horns. (Not actual arms! There is a circle, cross, diameter line and radius line which allow you to attach objects you want moved.)

I followed the Motion Board Hookup Guide (https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/spectacle-motion-board-hookup-guide) which used the “Virtual Board” (a programming option, not a physical board) to set the servos to run at periodic intervals rather than at the push of a button. This cut down on some bulk and would work for projects were continuous or periodic motion would be more beneficial than button activation!
I stuck the micro servo in place with some tape and also attached a 3D printed cylinder I had lying around to try it out with the weight.
Notes on Weight:
The micro servos have a Torque of 16.6/20.8 oz-in. (4.8/6.0V). I believe this means that it can support 16.6/20.8 oz (1.04/1.3 lbs) of weight at one inch away from the axis. I’ve also read that these numbers are based on ideal conditions so it is better to halve the weight. (So roughly one servo can support 8.3/10.4oz (0.52/0.65lbs) of weight within one inch away from the center). I am not entirely sure on my math there but I had no issue getting it to turn some of our 3D printed parts. I think it would work well with most lightweight cosplay pieces.
For Cosplay:
The servo has a limited rotation, moving ~90° in either direction. I think a lot of projects would benefit from a full 360° turn. You can alter servos to allow for a broader ranger of motion but since this is a beginner kit I hope they can include a continuous rotation servo as an option.
That said, the servos are good. They come with multiple arms/horns and make it easy to add motion to a variety of projects. Really easy to put together and get started when you follow their hookup guide. Definitely a good beginner kit for adding motion but you might need to fiddle with the numbers to get the timing down.
Like the lights, there is still a lot of bulk that comes from using the cables. So this will work best in props that have room to run the wires and insert the servos.
Notes
If it doesn’t work, check the connection between the servo and the board. On my first run through the servo didn’t move and it was because I pinned it in backwards. Woops!

A Samsung Unviels Of Notebook 9 Pen 13 & 15 In 2019
Samsung on Thursday launched the next-generation notebook 9 convertible notebook that will be available next year. The new range of convertibles includes models with a 13.3-inch display or a 15-inch display. These models are aimed at professionals who need the performance of Intel Core i7 CPUs, as well as the convenience of a stylus in a relatively portable package. It is also worth noting that the new system is the industry's first well-known brand PC with a UFS card reader.
As a competitor to the other laptops, the Notebook 9 Pen and its all-metal alloy chassis offer a durable and lightweight case with a unit weight of only 2.2 lbs. The convertible 360-degree hinge allows users to flexibly convert from a tablet to a laptop simply by rotating the keyboard behind the screen. The notebook 9 pen, as its name suggests, includes a built-in S-Pen for digital graffiti, writing, sketching and more. The S Pen is a battery-free device with a 0.7mm tip that recognizes 4096 pressure for a smooth writing/drawing experience. When the pen is removed from the notebook (its home page is a hole in the front), Air Command software will launch S Pen shortcuts for Samsung Notes and Autodesk Sketchbook for immediate creation.
Samsung's notebook 9-series notebooks are known for their portability and affordable price. The company has been expanding this product line for some time, with the launch of Notebook 9 Pro in mid-2017, the introduction of the Notebook 9 Pen in late 2017, and the notebook 9 rotating convertible, which caused some confusion. Since "professional" and "pen" have a lot in common, it seems that Samsung will merge the two lineups into one next year. Since the new laptop 9-ply hybrid laptop will have to solve a slightly different audience, Samsung must dramatically change the design of its 13.3-inch notebook 9-segment convertor: the new laptop has a higher capacity battery, but a bit thicker The shape and heavier (15.9 mm, 1.12 kg).
Despite the different display sizes (but with full HD resolution) and overall size (see the exact numbers in the table below), the new Samsung laptop 9 pen 13 and notebook 9 pen 15 are very similar to each other. Both systems use CNC machined aluminum chassis with Ocean Blue finish.
These new devices are equipped with Samsung's new S Pen stylus, which can be stored in the chassis and can sense 4,000 pressures. It has tilt sensitivity and has a shorter delay time than existing models. Perhaps the most interesting feature of this tiny device is the ability to replace different types of work. Both machines feature a 54 Wh battery and, in the best case, provide up to 15 hours of battery life on a single charge.
On the hardware side, both laptop 9-pen systems are based on Intel's 8th generation core i7 processor (Cisco Quad-Core Whiskey Lake) with LPDDR3 memory and PCIe / NVMe SSD. The 13.3-inch model relies on the Intel Graphics UHD 620 iGPU, while the 15-inch SKU features NVIDIA's GeForce MX150 stand-alone GPU and 2 GB of RAM for additional graphics.
The I/O function is a powerful selling point for Samsung notebooks. Samsung's upcoming hybrid computer has an 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth controller with gigabit performance, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a USB Type-C connector, stereo speakers developed with AKG, and a microphone. A TRRS audio input/output, as well as a UFS + microSD card reader. The latter deserves special attention because it is the first time a famous PC manufacturer has introduced a laptop with a UFS card reader. As the main driver behind the UFS specification, Samsung must support these high-performance cards on other products, and we can only wonder why the company has not done so so far. At the same time, the fact that Samsung's new laptops are equipped with UFS readers may indicate that the company also plans to enable UFS support on other devices.
In terms of security, Samsung's notebook 9-pen system is equipped with a fingerprint reader and a high-definition webcam with an infrared sensor for Windows Hello face recognition.
Samsung plans to showcase the new notebook 9-phone at CES next month. Also at the show, the company will disclose the exact specifications and prices of convertible laptops.

Five Days...
The countdown continues. This Friday, Feb. 2, I will be "dans la maison" at Mystery to Me in Madison at 6:00pm.
His most esteemed potentate, gad-about-town, racketeer, and erstwhile Lord Bobbins, Eric Jon Larson, should be there as well.
It's a weird thing to write a book set in another creative genius' playground, but that's what I did, and that is what I will be promoting.
I have never had a problem filling time with long-winded explanations and stories, nor has Eric. We should be able to fill any amount of time discussing the book, the future books, Teslacon, #steampunk, or any other topics that might draw peoples' interest.
I promise to try to be mildly entertaining. Please come, if you're free, and bring friends. Wear steampunk attire, if you have any. If I can pack the place with bodies, then perhaps Joanne will have me back in the future. Who knows? Anything is possible.
In other news:
Paige Krogwold has been hard at work on the cover of LONG EMPTY ROADS. I have not seen it, as of this writing, but I have faith that the eBook will still launch this Friday.
I have been hard at work on the third TeslaCon novel, LORD BOBBINS AND THE CLOCKWORK GIRL, and even have an outline forming for a fourth book in the series. I will begin the first round of edits on the second book, LORD BOBBINS AND THE DOME OF LIGHT, soon. And, I may be writing a novella on the history of TeslaCon in the near future. Eric still has to get me the notes on that before I can start penning it, but things are afoot! Even though sales of LB&TRR have been nowhere near what I had conservatively hoped, it would still be nice to have this series take off somewhat.
It's nice to be getting the volume of writing done that I've been able to do lately, but I'm still unemployed. That's becoming more and more of a crucible. I am trying to persevere, though. I have been applying to a wide and varied assortment of jobs, both part-time and full-time in an attempt to just get out of the house. In the meantime, I anchor my usual booth at Culver's and write.

Review: RØDE improves VideoMic Pro+ with several new features
For many years, I have been reviewing several different types of microphones. However, this is the very first time I am focusing on the on-camera genre. One of the most popular one has been the VideoMic Pro from RØDE. Now the Australian manufacturer has taken it to the next level with the VideoMic Pro+. Ahead I’ll go over each one of the specific new features, including two videos from RØDE and four more audio/video test recordings shot with Sony PXW-X70. Finally, I include what I call “The Moral of the Story” regarding on-camera mics as opposed to their alternatives.
RØDE describes the RØDE VideoMic Pro+ as:
“A new addition to the best-in-market on-camera category. It is a true shotgun microphone designed for use with camcorders, DSLR cameras and portable audio recorders as a source of primary and reference audio.”
Even though RØDE didn’t mention it, RØDE VideoMic Pro+ will also work with mirrorless cameras and PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) cameras with mic inputs too.
Audio connection and signal
The VideoMic Pro+ (B&H link) terminates with a TRS (Tip Ring Sleeve) 3.5 mm plug. See my TS/TRS/TRRS/TRRRS: Combating the misconnection epidemic article (illustrated above) for more details about the different types of plugs.
Although a TRS plug often means “stereo”, the VideoMic Pro+ is not a stereo microphone. It is mono. It has a TRS plug for two reasons:
Most video camcorders with a 3.5mm mic input have a TRS socket and are expecting a TRS plug, since some people might connect a stereo mic, or record dual mono with an appropriate adapter.
There is a special function on the VideoMic Pro+ for audio bracketing where, one of the two “stereo” channels is reduced in level, as a spare. This can be helpful when shooting unrepeatable and unpredictable content and an unexpected extremely loud signal causes clipping, but requires proper selection during editing to be useful between the main and spare track. I did not test this option during the recordings, since what we did was both repeatable and predictable. When not invoking the audio bracketing feature, the VideoMic Pro+ outputs an identical signal on its Left and Right channels on the TRS plug.
In other scenarios, the TRS plug on the VideoMic Pro+ can certainly be adapted to TRRS (for direct connection to a smartphone or tablet) using an optional SC4 adaptor (Amazon link • B&H link). The VideoMic Pro+ can also be adapted to XLR using an optional VXLR adaptor (Amazon link • B&H link).
For the test recordings you will see and hear ahead in this article, we didn’t use any adapter. Instead, we temporarily removed the handle (with its XLR inputs) from the Sony PXW-X70 camcorder (Amazon link • B&H link) and mounted the VideoMic Pro+ directly onto the camera body’s onboard shoe. We then connected the VideoMic Pro+’s TRS plug directly into the Sony PXW-X70 camcorder’s own 3.5 mm input.
Automatic on/off power with options
RØDE understands that with the stress of audio/video production, it is natural to forget to shut off a microphone when you shut off a camera. When camera operators forget to do that, the microphone (with built-in batteries) continues to draw power and suck the batteries dry even when not being used to record or broadcast live. That’s why RØDE invented an automatic function that can automatically shut off the microphone when the microphone stops receiving bias voltage (aka plugin power) from the camera, i.e. when the camera operator shuts off the camera or unplugs the mic. So whenever used with a camera that outputs bias voltage on the mic input, there is no longer any need to remember to turn the microphone off, since it shuts off automatically. Of course, there is a button to turn the microphone on and off manually, in the case of using the mic with a camera or other device that doesn’t output bias voltage.
The VideoMic Pro+ comes with its included LB-1 lithium-ion rechargeable battery, and alternatively can be powered continually via Micro USB. In addition, the VideoMic Pro+ can also accept AA batteries.
Built-in shock absorber
The VideoMic Pro+ has a built-in Rycote Lyre suspension system, which has been called “best in class”.
Built-in pre-preamp
To compensate weak and noisy preamps (preamplifiers) in many cameras, the VideoMic Pro+ has a built-in pre-preamp, similar to other’s I have covered in the past, including Cloudlifter and Fethead (although those two are for balanced mics where the connected device offers phantom power). The VideoMic Pro+ offers up to +20dB of pre-preampfification. This allows setting the camera’s audio input level to minimum.
Built-in filter and equalization
The VideoMic Pro+ has a built-in two-stage low cut (aka high pass) filter to reduce low frequencies such as rumble from traffic or air conditioning.
In addition, the VideoMic Pro+’s high frequency boost can raise high frequencies when desired, enhancing detail and clarity in the recording.

Four test videos
The following 4 test videos were shot by Francisco Javier Arbolí using his PXW-X70. As indicated earlier, we removed the PXW-X70’s handle with XLR in order to mount the VideoMic Pro+ directly to the camera, and connected the TRS 3.5 mm plug directly into the matching input on the camera. Audio in the camera was set to manual. Video was shot at 1080/29.97p at 50 megabits per second 10-bit 4:2:2 using Sony’s XAVC L códec with uncompressed audio. Later, I used Telestream Switch (reviewed in three articles here) to transcode to Apple ProRes 4:2:2. I then used Auphonic to normalize the audio to -16 LUFS (without any filtration). I edited with Telestream ScreenFlow 6.2.3, where I moved the video saturation to zero (to get the grayscale effect) and added each lower third, which is a PNG with alpha channel created externally.
I shot the still photo of Francisco Javier Arbolí with his camcorder and the VideoMic Pro+ using my Google Pixel XL (Amazon link) phone’s native Camera app in Android 8.0 (Oreo), and converted it to grayscale using the web version of Google Photos. Since the original photo is 4048×3036, I scaled it down to 1920×1080 in ScreenFlow with a slight crop.
The required audio boost to -16 LUFS during normalization of all clips was moderate with most, since the raw recordings made with the VideoMic Pro+ were approximately -21 LUFS. However the required boost from the only one made with the camcorder’s built in mic was much greater, since the raw recording was -30.89 LUFS and that was already maxed out with the camera’s manual audio level adjustment.

Conclusions and “The Moral of the Story”
Many people who haven’t tried them yet have an extremely high expectation for an on-camera mic. Those people then become disappointed until they finally realize that no matter how good or how directional a microphone is, the closer to the source the better. No on-camera mic can compete with a mic which is much closer to the individual speaking, be it:
a head mounted mic, like these two I recently reviewed
A handheld mic, like the RØDE Reporter (reviewed here, Amazon link • B&H link) or Senal ENG-18RL (reviewed here, B&H link)
a lavalier mic
on a boom just out of frame
On-camera mics are good as supplementary audio and/or when none of the above is feasible. With the VidMic Pro+ (B&H link), RØDE has made it become the best in its category, but it is still that category.
