Video Game Tutorials

The best video game tutorials are the ones we don’t remember.

After recently finishing both Portal and Trover Saves the Universe, I really began thinking about how important tutorials are within a video game. What I’ve realised is that games which I couldn’t explicitly remember having tutorials were the ones I enjoyed the most. Take portal for example, which is approximately 80% tutorial, where the many ‘tutorials’ voiced by a sarcastic AI were integrated into the storyline. This meant that although the whole gameplay was basically teaching the player new mechanics, the player never felt as though it was out of place or broke gameflow.

A very recent game I played in which majority of the game was a tutorial was Trover Saves the Universe. Very much like Portal, the game incorporated the tutorial into the gameplay and storyline. Whenever you felt even the slightest bit lost, the witty characters will always give you a hint but no screens ever popped up telling you what to do next and how, which ruins game immersion, and the characters never held your hand and directed you in any way. You still needed to figure things out on your own and that was the funnest part of the game, solving the puzzles with simply just commands from the characters.

We all know that feeling when you are so into a game, maybe trying to defeat a wave of enemies, and then all of a sudden something just pops up onto your screen telling you how to play the game, ruining your gameflow. This is probably the worst way of adding a tutorial into your game as our instinct as players is to immediately skip this and get back into the action. What’s worse is when you need the information that was displayed later on in the game but have no idea how to do it because you skipped it.

Trover Saves the Universe’s tutorial at the beginning includes a guy on the TV screaming at you to turn your chair around. This is how you learn how to move around on your chair and immediately realise that you can’t actually walk around anywhere since you are stuck seated on a chair.

Throughout the game, characters give you chair upgrades and each time you receive an upgrade you are put into a situation where you’re forced to use the upgrade. For example, when you are first introduced to the object grabbing tool, a lady on a wheelchair makes you move her boxes from her garage and then back into her garage. This process, although so tedious, makes the player feel more comfortable with the tool as they have actually practiced with it. The old lady keeps asking for favours, promising to open a secret staircase for you so that you may pass the cliff, however, you soon realise that you can use both the tool and the boxes she provided you with to make your own staircase. So the game has not only taught you a very important mechanic you will need throughout the game, but also made you practice it and incorporated it into the storyline. It never felt like a tutorial but instead a mission in the game.

And so I would like to conclude by stating that, when designing your games, don’t just throw in a tutorial and hope for the best. Think about how you will teach players about your game throughout your whole designing process in a way that will engage your players, not turn them away from your game.

Don’t forget, a tutorial is a part of your game, not just a separate piece of your game. It should be incorporated within your gameplay and storyline, not stand out on its own and be an obvious tutorial. Your players don’t need to feel like they’ve just played through a tutorial, in fact it is better if they don’t feel this way. As stated at the beginning, the best video game tutorials are the ones we don’t remember.

Recently played and beat Trover Saves The Universe on VR! I been eyeballing this game for a while, mainly since I recognized the Rick and Morty style artwork, plus it just looked weird, so I had to play it. Basically, went into this, not knowing what it was going to be like, didn't watch any trailers, didn't read about it. VR Game? Looks like something in the Rick and Morty Universe, or whatever, yeah, I'll play it. Need more stuff to play on my VR as well. So the game loads up, with music that I got attached to right away. Then the game begins, teaches me how to play, some weird guy takes a couple of dogs and shoves them into his eye sockets.... wait, what? So I have someone I need to defeat and get the dogs back, plus some purple guy is going to help me, who apparently has babies shoved into his eye sockets. Sticking things in your eye sockets gives you abilities? Whoa.... This game is already weird AF. I'm playing a guy who sits around in his flying chair, operates things using a video game controller. What the heck is this thing that I am playing? What is this? What is that? What strange worlds and characters that I'm visiting. This is all too funny and way too awesome! Go play this game, play it in VR. Yes, this game is also playable outside of VR, but don't do it. Don't have VR? Wait till you get VR. It's glorious!
