The more times I re-watch Lost the madder I get that ANYONE still wants to leave the island once they discover there are showers and processed foods. What more do you even need? Smartphone-induced insomnia?? Office jobs????? Robocalls??? Vacuuming???? INCOME TAX????????

Challenging music has always been around, but it seems more so these past few years. Bands like black midi, The Armed, Tropical Fuck Storm and Soul Glo, have helped push my musical tastes in new directions. So, combine that idea with the epic tunefulness of Black Country, New Road and you'll have some inkling of what to expect when listening to Crack Cloud.

I'm late to yet another great band. Crack Cloud (Vancouver, British Columbia) has been around since 2016 as a musical collective. While the band appears to be seven members, each song can see their numbers swell. Really, the feel of this music brings to mind acts as diverse as Talking Heads or Big Audio Dynamite.

This has just been released by Meat Machine (looks to be the bands own label)

Rimworld: Do You Like to Lose?

Three people stand outside their makeshift shelter. It wasn’t made very well and the beds are hard, but they’re glad to have a roof over their head. 

Everyone else that had been on their ship perished during the crash. Only these three had survived- crashlanding on the planet in pods. 

The tropical air buzzes with insects. The aliens move as one, dense cloud, lazily swatted away by a survivor. Her eyes remained on the horizon. As a distant figure moves into view, she raises her pistol. She’s never shot a gun before. Not really. She’s shot at animals, sure, to provide food for the group, but never had she shot at a person.

Fuck, the girl was only 19. She was too young for this. 

She shoots. It bounces off the ground at the invader’s foot. She curses, reloads.

The invader holds a knife. It’s dull, but dangerous nonetheless. From the look in the wild man’s eyes, he’d been born on this godforsaken planet. And of course. No person from any civilized community would so readily throw themselves at another in an act that can only be interpreted as suicide. 

He lunges for one of her friends. He is older, but he survived the crash alongside her. He is also the only one of the three survivors without a gun. He’s older with a heart problem. But he doesn’t run.

The third of their group, an elderly woman, brandishes a shotgun. She takes aim down the sights, even as the younger girl struggles to differentiate between friend and foe in the struggle, and shoots. Perfectly. The bullet enters the front of the invader’s skull and exits the back as a bloody mess.

He stumbles and falls. Even before he is down, the bugs go for his sickly sweet blood. The girl forces down vomit as she watches the aliens drink his blood, unable to look away.

Then, another siren goes off.

Shit. Again? Already? The fuck was wrong with this planet?

The male of the group is uninjured. He looks out towards the trees and clicks his tongue. In his rough voice, he says, “Twenty goddamn rabid tortoises headed this way.”

My colonists did not survive the tortoises. I mean, come on, there were twenty of them. No matter how slow-moving they were, those little fuckers were tough.

That’s the beauty of Rimworld, though. The most random stuff will kill you whenever it pleases. 

Rimworld is a game lovingly nicknamed “Warcrime Simulator” by its fanbase. Whatever horrible acts against humanity you can think of, it's probably possible in Rimworld. Personally, I like taking alcoholics and banning them from drinking alcohol, so they have to go through a painful withdrawal.

Others (Not me! I have not done this! I am not this mean!) employ child soldiers to fight on the front lines. They purposefully explode boomalope (prompted by death, of course, these gasoline-filled cattle explode with the force of several sticks of dynamite). They summon robotic threats knowing full well that their tribe equipped with some javelins won’t stand a chance. They, more morbidly, (as if child soldiers weren’t morbid, but Rimworld has numbed me to the more tame crimes against humanity) harvest the organs of enemies to either sell, eat, play with, or give to one of their friends.

There are plenty of ways to die (or kill) in Rimworld. Disease. Starvation. Cold. Hot. Any kind of animal. Other people. Old age. Dementia. A friend might kill you. One of your traps might accidentally spring. Giant bugs. Fire. A coma. Boomalope bombing. Cave collapse. Wild goose. Eldrich deities. Giant robots. Small robots. Maybe a medium robot will kill you.

No matter what, you will die. Just like real life. And who knows how horrific and morbid your death will be. Just like real life.

Is the talk of death making you anxious?

Well, you and Rimworld NPCs alike. 

Rimworld NPCs have traits- even animals, who can be stuck with life-long diseases. They typically have three traits, ranging from ‘kind’ to ‘pyromaniac’. Colonists can be ‘bisexual’, ‘misandrist’, and ‘insomniac’. Perhaps someone in your group is ‘trigger-happy’, ‘agoraphobic’, and ‘sanguine’.

You’re stuck with whoever comes into your group. Sure, you can ‘get rid of them’ later on, but, especially early on, you’ll need as much manpower as you can get. So you’re stuck with the wonderful person who manages to be ‘pyromaniac’, ‘sociopath’, and ‘sickly’ all at the same time. Pretty much anything a real person can be translated to Rimworld NPCs. If I were a Rimworld colonist, for example, I believe I would be ‘animal lover’, ‘asexual’, and ‘anxious’.

So long as you don’t get the guy who can’t be bothered to haul a pile of wood from one side of the room to the other.

Lana’s Unreleased Songs in ‘Chronological’ Order

This is not based on Lana’s reality or intention, just the story she tells in her music. This does not include Ave Maria, Boom Like That, Roll With Me, Money Hunny or most of the EPs/demotapes

Younger Years

This is Lana’s teenage years, due to the mentions of school and her age. The story I gleaned from this was she was a wild girl at school, hanging around with the wrong crowd (Boarding School, Children of the Bad Revolution, Driving in Cars With Boys, Making Out, Motel 6, Butterflies Part 2). She always felt like an outcast and had dreams of being famous (Elvis (inspiration), Hollywood, Pin Up Galore, Playground, You’re Gonna Love Me, Jesus is My Boyfriend).

She meets a guy who is a little bit bad for her but she connects with despite the toxic nature of their relationship (Me and My Boyfriend, Run Motorcycle, I Don’t Wanna Go, I Learned How To Make Love From the Movies (another ‘black leather moonlight), Ridin’, Joshy and I, Stoplite De-Lite, Queen of Hearts).

However, they’re passionately into each other (Baby Blue Love, BBM Baby, Jealous Girl, Puppy Love) and she dreams of them running away together (On Our Way, Prom Song Gone Wrong, Super Movie, Take Me to Paris, 1949, Every Man Gets His Wish).

They go on to break-up after multiple ‘breaks’ (Butterflies Part 1), when Lana’s boyfriend decides he wants to hit the road himself (Your Band is All the Rage). Lana recognises they were too young and bad for each other, and just wanted to leave together (Afraid, Damn You).

Waitressing/Trailer Parks/Jim

Lana becomes a waitress and goes on to meet Jim (All Smiles, Caught You Boy, Meet Me in the Pale Moonlight, You Can Be the Boss), a rich, law-breaking unkind lover (Crooked Cop, Hundred Dollar Bill). Their relationship is passionate and loving (4th of July, Behind Closed Doors, Bellevue, Bentley, Betty Boop Boop, My Song 57, Coca Colla, Daddy Issues, Dynamite, Hawaiin Tropic, Heartshaped Chevrolet, I Was in a Bad Way, Let My Hair Down, Match Made in Heaven, Oooh Baby, Push Me Down, Put Your Lips Together, Queen of Disaster, Bikini Gold) but also difficult (Maha Maha, My Best Days, Put the Radio On, Resistance, Roses, Trees, Valley of the Dolls, Cult Leader (metaphor)).

Jim also had a darker influence on Lana and she admired his criminal ways (Hot Hot Hot, Never Let Me Go (Nancy and Sid)). They lived in a trailer park together (Backfire, Fordham Road, Television Heaven, Trash Magic) and slowly they fell more into crime.

Getting Famous/Stripping

Lana becomes a stripper and seeks to get noticed. She spends her days at the diner and her nights at the club (Us Against the World, Dance For Money, Ghetto Baby (stilettos, loose link), Go Go Dancer, Midnite Dancer Girlfriend, Moie Je Joue, Party Girl).

Lana eventually starts to get noticed for this (C U L8r Alligator, Disco) as well as her singing (Marilyn). Though she does still miss the life she had with Jim (Methamphetamines), she meets interesting new people (Strangelove, Big Bad Wolf, Wolf T-Shirt) and people who can give her a chance in the business (Axl Rose Husband (”record executive), Ben) - including famous men she admires (Is It Wrong?), accidentally becoming known in a scandal (Other Woman, True Love On the Side).

Famous

Lana’s fame grows quickly, and she is known as the wild-child star (Be My Daddy, Breaking My Heart, Heavy Hitter, Dreamgirl, Dum Dum, Paradise, Serial Killer, So Legit, St Tropez). She starts up a PR relationship (Fake Diamond) but meets another singer like her, who slows down her crazy behaviour (Because of You). They are a perfect pair, both rich, talented and about the famous lifestyle (Beautiful Player, Delicious, Back to tha Basics). He lives too fast, too dangerously (Live Forever, Velvet Crowbar, Lift Your Eyes) but she sticks by him. They have a whirlwind engagement to be married.

She is heartbroken when she hears rumours about him (In The Sun, Catch and Release (”page three”, gossip)). She is devastated and angered by the revelations of his unfaithfulness (Hollywood’s Dead, Noir, She’s Not Me, Tired of Singing the Blues, Your Girl) but ultimately is strong (Break My Fall). Most of all, she’s heartbroken about the marriage that would never be (Fine China*).

Lana sees the downfall of fame steadily (Last Girl on Earth) and as she becomes introspective (On & On & On) misses her past (I Talk to Jesus, Greenwich, Wayamaya, You and Me).

She spends time alone, finding herself and her freedom (Angels Forever Forever Angels, Wild One) but soon meets someone new (Hey You). She falls in love (JFK) despite remembering the past with Jim and her other lovers (French Restaurant). She is mature and safe in her relationship, and allows it to unfold (Life is Beautiful, Spin Me Round, Starry Eyed, Unidentified Flying Bill, When I’m With You, Yes to Heaven).

SECRET SERVICE VETERANS JOIN STAFF. PROMISE TO ROOT OUT ORGANIZED CRIME.

The Attorney General has formed an autonomous investigative agency to be headed up by veteran law enforcement officer Edgar Ross in an attempt to track high profile and dangerous criminals. The Bureau will also be tasked with investigating financial fraud and other organized crimes.

Upon swearing in, he stated: "I want all criminals to know that here in America, everyone will eventually pay for what they have done."

Unrest in the Tropics

COST OF FOOD, FUEL ANGERS CITIZENS. SUGAR BARONS TO BLAME.

Island residents from Barbados to Cuba are experiencing soaring prices and short supply of food and fuel. They are blaming local politicians and sugar barons for the situation. Shortly after the political unrest in the area, including the assassination of prominent sugar industry advocate and Guarman governor Alberto Fussar in 1899, American banking institutions, including JD McKnight and Co., took control of the sugar industry on several islands, including Barbados, the Virgin Islands, and Guarma.

Fields which once flourished with locally grown foods and were used to feed the island nation suddenly switched to growing sugar cane. As a result of a single crop economy, all foodstuffs are imported, to great expense for local peoples. Foreign investors hire locals to guard and police their massive plantations, subjecting workers to harsh conditions and penalties.

Local groups argue that island residents are suffering the most, while businesses say heavy investments by American financial institutions have allowed for the revitalization of the local economies.

'We Are Helpless'

TOWNS DECRY UNCHECKED VIOLENCE. OUTLAW GANGS RUNNING RAMPANT. LED BY NOTORIOUS CRIMINAL MICAH BELL.

A cacophony of outrage has been building at the lawlessness that prevails in towns across the area. Numerous outlaw gangs seem to operate unchecked or unstoppable by law enforcement, rendering terrified citizens helpless. The reward for the killing or capture of infamous outlaw Micah Bell and his gang was recently increased by government officials in response to the unanimous outcry from citizens that something must be done about this murderous gang of thieves and killers.

Mr. Bell and his associates continue their spree of killing and robbing while running roughshod over law enforcement. His acts of lawlessness rival that of Van der Linde himself. They pay no debts and dynamite banks and buildings as a recreational pastime. Bell has long been a suspect in the Blackwater Bank Robbery and Strawberry massacre back in 1899 and numerous train robberies that have ended in dismemberment or death of passengers in the years since then. Little is known of Mr. Bell's origins.

Reverend Swanson Leads NY Church

DELIVERS POWERFUL MESSAGE

Reverend Orville Swanson was inducted into his official capacity as minister at the First Congregational Church of New York this week, having moved to the city to accept the position. A service was held and then a reception was given to celebrate the appointment. Encouraging reports from attendees indicate that Reverend Swanson delivered an impassioned and heartfelt sermon about acknowledging sin and seeking redemption. He spoke about his own break from faith, a dark period when he could not attend church, falling into sin, depravity and wanton gluttony.

He chronicled the period where he rediscovered his faith and began witnessing on street-corners, to then become assistant pastor at a church in Ohio and now New York. Tallulah Jetty Gang Killed

BANK RAIDED IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. CITIZENS FORM POSSE.

United States Marshal Fulkerton received a dispatch from Silver Springs indicating that after years of evading capture, the Tallulah Jetty Gang was chased down after a brazen bank robbery in broad daylight. After a series of outrages, including the killing of several women and elders, officers placed 200 men in pursuit of the gang, which was overtaken near Anadarko.

A combination force of Cherokee Indians and a militia formed after the bank robbery pursued the gang to a cave in the bluffs south of the area, where a spectacular gun battle took place, killing several officers. After a period of quiet, one man entered the cave where he found a gravely wounded William Bishop bleeding out next to deceased henchmen Harold Sutton and James Shaw.

Liquor Smuggled Into Indian Territory

DEPUTIES PURSUE OUTLAWS, ONE KILLED.

A dispatch received from Comanche Indian territory yesterday says that Deputy United States Marshal Tidwell and another deputy attempted to arrest Cletus Yarnell and Lawrence Branch for introducing intoxicating liquors into Indian Territory. The outlaws resisted arrest and a gun battle ensued, with Marshal Tidwell's horse being shot out from under him. The desperados fled into Indian territory and were pursued. Yarnell was mortally wounded, Branch was arrested.

Bubonic Plague in San Francisco

CITY STILL REELING AFTER EARTHQUAKE THAT KILLED 3,000.

After an earthquake that destroyed 80 percent of the city and killed over 3,000 people, the city of San Francisco now reports that a second epidemic of bubonic plague has broken out. It is believed the outbreak is due to the large number of rats in the area. Fleas from infected rats transmit the disease, resulting in fever symptoms, seizures, gangrene and necrosis of the extremities, along with, in many cases, death.

New Railroad Completed

A GRAND PROJECT OUR MANIFEST DESTINY

The final ties were laid and spikes driven through to complete the Central Union rail line stretching through New Hanover. Passengers will be able to bypass the Grizzlies, Rhodes, and Scarlett Meadows, drastically reducing travel time. Now with a direct line connecting Cornwall Kerosene and Tar and Saint Denis, freight and commuters will flow fast and freely.

The project came with complications, including controversy over missing workers' wages and a land dispute. Representatives from towns such as Van Horn Trading Post and Annesburg say the new line will result in the decline of their towns. Last year while fishing in the Alaskan territories, I soon discovered that a family of bears was fishing too, and one particularly angry Kodiak took exception to my overwhelming success of pulling dozens of Sockeye Salmon out of the water. I could not blame him; however, now his head sits sentry above my foyer with a salmon in its mouth, a testament to the hunter becoming the hunted.

In cold streams, and particularly in the Grizzlies, salmon will strike river lures and are possibly the best tasting fish you can bring home for supper. They are so plentiful you may take as many as you like with no consequence. Happy casting.
