you're not a monster. you're you. you're flawed, yes, but you're also incredibly alive. just human. real. capable of great things, capable of change and growth, too. don't define yourself by the inner critic lashing out at you. you're not your worst moments.

As an adult still living with their abusive parent, I often find that affirmations meant to empower me are unhelpful at best. They often feel like they're overstating the amount of agency I have as an adult; I've spent my entire life being abused. It's all I know and I have a lifetime of conditioning and nervous system damage to show for it.
All that doesn't just go away now that I'm older than 18, and neither do the material circumstances that keep me here. Even though I have more legal rights and have grown since I was younger, I am still not in control by the very nature of being the victim in an abusive relationship. So, for those who relate, here are some affirmations that might hit different:
My abuser does not have my best interests in mind, even if they think they do.
I am my own person; my mind and body belong to me.
My feelings are justified, and I deserve to feel and express them.
I am doing what I need to survive, and that is all I need to do.
I am doing my best given the knowledge, resources, and support I have.
I am the only person who can decide what is best for me.
My situation is unfair and wrong. I deserve to be happy and safe.
I do not have to engage in toxic positivity; that will only hurt me.
As long as I am alive, there is something good in this life for me - no matter how small.
I have inherent rights just because I exist.
I shouldn't have to deal with this on my own; I deserve support and protection.
Everything I need is something I deserve. Everything I deserve is something I need.
If any of these don't resonate, feel free to discard them. Everyone finds comfort and empowerment differently.

Wild things I have learnt in therapy:
When a child cries, parents are supposed to comfort them, not punish them
Parents are, in fact, supposed to want to spend time with their children
Children too have a right to privacy, meaning parents are not allowed to read their diaries etc and then punish them for the thoughts they found about
Children are allowed to be upset and cry
Children don't have to earn the love and attention from their parents by performing various things
Children are not supposed to be scared of going home and/or their parents
Children are not supposed to be physically abused and even a little bit of hitting is actually physical abuse
Parents are not supposed to expect that children are mentally as mature as other adults
Children are not supposed to be told that they're an accident, a burden, or something the parents regret
Children are not supposed to be scared and ashamed of themselves or feel like failures because of their parents

me when i realize that the media i consume during bad times that makes me feel seen and understood is also making me wrongly believe that refusing to let anyone in is a reasonable coping skill, fueling my self-hatred, and worsening my ability to be vulnerable with the people i care about:

when you’re healing, you will fuck up. maybe you’ll relapse, maybe you’ll do something you know is gonna hurt you, maybe you’ll deprive yourself of something you need, whatever. but healing isn’t linear, its wibbly wobbly and weird. you’re not terrible for messing up, you’re not terrible for not being ready to move forward, you’re not terrible for not being perfect. you still deserve healing, and you still deserve respect.

Parts of PTSD that no one talks about
Not knowing who to be angry at.
Being angry with yourself for letting it happen even if there was no way to stop it.
Crying and not knowing why.
Flashbacks where nothing bad is happening but it feels bad.
Denying that it ever even happened because your brain doesn't want to process it.
Wanting to go back to it so it feels "bad enough."
Intentionally triggering yourself to feel like your suffering is real.
Being angry all the time at every little thing.
Getting triggered by minor things and then being treated poorly because of your reaction to said trigger.
Hating change.
Being scared to sleep because you know you'll have nightmares.
Struggling to find hobbies that you enjoy.
Feeling like you're barely human.
Struggling to be positive about anything at all.
Feeling like you may be manipulating people around you into liking you.
Feeling like no one believes you because you barely even believe yourself.
Treating your past self as a "dead" version of you and feeling like a completely different person.
Being tired all the time, both physically and mentally.
Feeling like if you talk about it, your safety will be at risk.
Feeling the need to hide your trauma from everyone, including professionals there to help them.
Being paranoid everyone is going to hurt you.
Being physically incapable of talking about it.
Feeling like you're stuck reliving your trauma.
Having to skip classes or work days because of flashbacks.
Mourning your past self.
Wanting to hurt others so they feel what you feel.
Wondering why it had to be you and it wasn't someone else.
Chronic pain.
Clinging to "safe people."
Not being able to find a solid sense of identity.
Forcing yourself to be around people who trigger you for the sake of politeness.
