us: fine but I’m stealing your name
anyway shoutout to all of the transmascs named ty, tyrannus, basilton, basil, or baz

please tell me about trans baz
THIS MESSAGE IS LIKE A MARRIAGE PROPOSAL TO ME!!!
okokokok so. Ok. There's two ways to look at this. Baz as a more binary trans man. And baz on the nonbinary spectrum. Consider both.
for starters i need to preface this by saying using a middle name and then shortening it is EXTREMELY trans behaviour. as is using last names to refer to other people. (Snow, Bunce.) I know because i am trans and have done both.
But listen baz is described by simon as such a masculine figure throughout but ESPECIALLY in books two and three - simon describes baz as "growing into himself" which is just...so incredibly trans coded. His beautiful suits combined with his long hair gives him a slight gnc flavour that just describes to me someone on the nonbinary/transmasc spectrum. Someone like me ok? I'll admit it. Another quote along these lines : "he proved himself as a man and as a magician." Now this is not to say us transmascs need to prove ourselves, but baz's background and particularly his relationship with his father means he probably does feel the need to prove himself as a man, and simon likely sees that desire in him.
Going back to Watford for a moment, we know the buildings recognise gender - i would presume magic would separate gender from sex. And so we have an eleven year old Baz, who has already expressed his transness to his family, having his gender affirmed by his mother's second home and burial place. It must have been the most complicated and emotional experience....and the greatest wakeup call to his father.
Simon's reaction....interesting and difficult. We know he had a chronic case of foot-in-mouth disease but a golden heart. I can imagine he didn't even Realise his roomate was trans (baz infamously never dressed in front of him) possibly until the moment in the forest. Baz absolutely hysterical over Simon being straight and does he know that Baz is a man? Does he acknowledge that?? And simon absolutely baffled like What Do You Mean. You Are Just The Boy I'm Kissing. And thus it all comes out and Simon never once questions that his boyfriend is a man.
But baz also LOVES fashion and I see him in skirts and such as he becomes more comfortable in his skin and more assertive in his masculinity.
I also see Fiona absolutely giving this boy his first suit. I see Watford giving him a boy's uniform and him crying. I see his cigarettes and his drinking in fifth year and all the pain he's in because he's so twisted up about being in his own skin. I see him. I just. I could go on forever.

bonus under the cut!
simon is too short . its totally a part of my trans experience, so have a rough draft of him having to stand up on his tiptoes on top of a box to be as tall as Shep and Baz (almost)
Tumblr media
(accidentally made shep wear bisexual socks . so count that headcanon in!)

trans!Fiona
I’ve had this idea in my head about Fiona being a trans man for a while, but I decided to wait until @transmagesweek to post it. This idea is what the majority of the things I post this week will revolve around, so I thought it would be a good thing to start out with it. I'll also be posting a fic to go with today's prompts later today.
Fiona came out when he was younger but only to a few people: Ebb, Nico, and Natasha
But then he lost all of that
Nico decided to become a vampire, which cause Ebb to withdraw into herself and it was almost like she was gone too, and when Natasha died, he felt like he had no one he could talk to about this
He felt all alone and didn't feel comfortable opening up to anyone, so he drew back into the closet and stayed there, playing at being a girl even though it nearly killed him a few times - he stayed strong for Baz though because someone had to look out for him
There were so many times when he wanted to tell someone but he felt like he had no one
He wanted to talk to Ebb but it felt like too much time had passed; there was too much distance between them after all this time
Ebb, Nico, and Fiona had all been so close in school, and Fiona had loved them both dearly, but it somehow felt different with Ebb. Fiona never thought too hard about that though because he didn’t want it to ruin what they had.
It was just another secret he held that sometimes felt like it would tear him apart, but we went on with his life, keeping it all in.
As Baz got older, there were times when Fiona wanted to tell Baz that he was trans, but he felt like Baz was suffering with enough without also having to carry this secret, so he kept his mouth shut even though it meant he felt like he was constantly lying to Baz (and to himself at times)
When Baz came out to him as gay at age 15, he again wanted to tell him, but he didn’t want to take that moment away from Baz. He made sure Baz knew he was loved no matter what (and wondered if Baz would feel the same about him when it came down to it)
Time passed and Fiona kept to himself
He watched after Baz and went on with his life, suffering silently by himself
But when he heard that Ebb had nearly been killed by the mage (because Ebb deserved to live) he went to her, tears in his eyes and an unnamable feeling in his chest.
"You're alive," he said. "So are you." "Of course I am. Nothing will ever kill me, remember?” It’s an old joke between them, but it falls flat now. Things just aren’t the same anymore.
"So how have you been?" Ebb asks, and Fiona is quiet for a long time before tears burn at his eyes, threatening to spill over as the truth overwhelms him. "Honestly? Not great." Ebb pulls him into her arms and rubs his back soothingly ass he whispers "it's okay. It will all be okay." And then they're both crying as Fiona finally allows himself to feel the pain he's been hiding for years.
"I'm trans," Fiona whispers. "I know." "No one else does." "That doesn’t make it any less real. You're still you." "Thank you."
They’re quiet for a while, simply holding onto each other like if they let go, the world will fall apart.
Fiona decides that while he’s getting things off his chest, he might as well confess his other big secret, and before he’s even made the decision to do so, the words are spilling out of his mouth: "I love you."
Ebb pulls back to meet his eyes as she says, “I love you, too. But why did you never say anything?" "You were in love with that dryad, and I didn’t want to ruin things." Ebb nods knowingly. Things were different back then.
They talk for a while after that, catching up and listening to each other about what they’ve been up to since the last time they saw each other.
Nothing is certain between them, but Fiona is smiling as he leaves, knowing that things will be okay. They can close this distance between them and at the very least be friends.
After talking with Ebb, Fiona decides it's time to tell Baz. He's tired of hiding himself from the world, especially the people he cares most about.
He doesn’t care as much about what anyone else will think or say, but he does care what Baz will think and it's time to face that, whatever happens.
It turns out that Baz also has something to tell Fiona, but Fiona asks him to wait. He needs to get this off his chest before he can have a chance to change his mind.
Fiona has been thinking about how he would tell Baz he was trans for years, but it’s still difficult to get the words out.
Somehow, it felt easier to come out to his friends when he was younger. It seemed as simple as telling them that he felt like a boy, but it isn’t that simple now. It feels like with just a few words, he could lose everything.
But he won’t back out now. He still tells Baz.
To Fiona's relief, Baz doesn’t have a problem with it. Baz hugs him and says that he loves him, and Fiona hadn’t realized until that moment how worried he was that he might never hear those words from Baz again after this, and for the second time that day, he feels tears filling his eyes.
"What should I call you?" Baz asks as Fiona wipes away his tears. "Fiona is fine for now." "Okay." He simply accepts it, which is another great relief to Fiona.
To get some of the attention off of himself for a bit, Fiona asks Baz what he wanted to tell him, and that’s when Baz tells him that he’s dating Simon.
A large part of Fiona wants to be mad because it’s the mages bloody heir, but he loves Baz, and if this is who he loves, Fiona will find a way to be okay with that.
"I'm happy for you," Fiona tells him. "Really?" "Of course. I told you that I’ll love you no matter what. It just might take me some time to love the idea of you dating the chosen one." Baz nods and laughs lightly. "That’s understandable."
They hug and in that moment they’re both happy. But this is just the beginning.
Fiona has a long road ahead of him. To figure out how to love himself and accept himself and find a way to be himself in a way that makes him comfortable but having the two people he loves most in the world by his side makes a huge difference.
Things don’t seem so difficult anymore, and when he looks ahead at the future, he has hope.

Do you know anything with like, a magic school/boarding school (any age range is fine, although I'd prefer more mature) but with like, mlm characters? Or a transmasc character, or a nb character, just like. I'm desperate I miss the genre but I'd like something I could maybe identify with more :(
Sure! For mlm characters there's Rainbow Rowell's Simon Snow series. Help Wanted by J. Emery is a cute novella set at a magic college with an MC who's questioning both their gender and sexuality.
Just to add a few more titles though they're not quite what you're seeking:
For transmasc and/or nb rep with magic (though not in a specifically magical or boarding school, alas), there's Alison Evans Euphoria Kids, The Witch King by H.E. Edgmon, The Brilliant Death by AR Capetta, and Aiden Thomas's Cemetery Boys.
For mlm boarding school but not magic, Abdi Nazemian's The Chandler Legacies comes out in a couple of weeks, and there's always Openly Straight by Bill Konigsberg. (And I'll also mention And They Lived by Steven Salvatore, which has a nonbinary MC at college.)
For magic/boarding school but wlw, there's The Grimrose Girls by Laura Pohl, As I Descended by Robin Talley (though actually that's mlm too, but it's a ghost Macbeth so probably not what you mean when you're asking for this and it sure does not end happily), It Ends in Fire by Andrew Shvarts, and A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee.

TRANSMAGES WEEK 2021
MARCH 25 - 31
Rules & Guidelines
The goal of this event is sharing and enjoying trans headcanons, so, to participate, you should create content of trans carryonverse / World of Mages characters!
Tag your posts with #transmagesweek and, if you want to make sure we see your entry, tag us (@transmagesweek) in your post! Also, add any fanfiction works you create on Ao3 to our official Ao3 Collection!
Create as much or as little as you want! You can participate every day or post only once or twice – it’s completely up to you! And you don’t need to follow the prompts, they’re just suggestions!
All kinds of fan creations (art, writing, songs, edits, cosplay, etc) are allowed! No restrictions! Create whatever you want, however you want! Be creative!
FAQ
“Can I make content for ‘X Character’ as trans?” Yes! This is exactly what we want for this week! But you can also share general headcanons about trans people in the World of Mages universe, however you want to!
“Do my headcanons have to be about binary trans characters only?” Not at all! We accept all trans / non-cis identities here, binary or nonbinary! Any and all headcanons are encouraged! And xenogender headcanons are also included :D
“Can I make canonically female characters transmasculine / canonically male characters transfeminine?” Yes, you can! Just please don’t fall into simply genderbending, as genderbents are not allowed in this event! Also, if you don’t mind, tag these accordingly (eg: #transfem simon snow, #transmasc agatha wellbelove, etc), as they could be misinterpreted as genderswaps and as a general concept might make some people uncomfortable! And, please, it would be best if the creators try their best to avoid erasing any canon representativity.
“Can I create ship content?” Definitely! Transcentered ship headcanons also deserve to shine on this event! And you can also create platonic / queerplatonic content for pairings, of course, not only romantic!
“Can I make content based on crossovers/AUs?” Go for it!
“Can I participate if I’m cis?” If you’re cis and would like to contribute to this event, feel free to! However, please also be aware of harmful stereotypes in depicting trans individuals, and consider talking to trans people you know about your ideas and depictions. Our DMs are also always open if you need someone to evaluate your content or beta anything!
Code of Conduct:
Please respect other people's headcanons! If you don’t like a headcanon, just ignore it or mute it.
We’ll be asking everyone to tag your specific headcanons (eg: #transmasc simon snow, #nonbinary penelope bunce, #transfem baz pitch, etc), so if anybody wants to mute a headcanon, they won’t come across it in the transmages week tag or in our reblogs!
This is a SFW challenge. We won’t be accepting any sexual content, and other heavy themes must be tagged (and generally avoided, if possible!)
Don’t participate if you’re a transphobe. (Duh!)
Even though our focus is positive content, we understand that people may find it relevant to create content with some experiences that may be negative or triggering. With that in mind:
Please be aware that some trans experiences (eg: transphobia, body dysphoria, misgendering, etc) may be very triggering for others. You’re free to create works with difficult themes, but please be considerate and always put trigger warnings and content warnings on the post itself and its tags! We won’t be reblogging such sensitive content without the proper warnings. Also, please tag violence, blood, and other general triggers.
We won’t be accepting any kind of content that shares the character’s deadname or has scenes where someone openly deadnames them mentioning their deadname explicitly. If you wish to include deadnaming in your work, please refrain from mentioning the deadname itself, and tag it accordingly.
We reserve the right not to reblog any works that we feel contradict these guidelines, as we want to make this event welcoming for as many people as possible.
If you have any questions about anything related to the event, feel free to send us an ask!

The Simpard Fortress
— What is that?
Baz sighed. They and Penelope shared a look.
— Mordelia, please. I need you to focus on what Miss Bunce is telling you. It’s very important.
— Exactly.— Penny added, shaking her head in agreement.— Except for the Miss Bunce part. I’m fine with just Penelope.
— Yes,— Baz smiled.— listen to Miss Penelope, Mordelia.
She elbowed them just slightly. Mordelia wasn’t paying attention, she just looked annoyed.
— I already know what she’s saying. That’s kid stuff. I’m going to Watford this fall, of course I know about first-year Magickal Theory already. Please. What I really want to know is what they — she points to the other side of the living room.— are doing. What’s that?
Pen and Baz turned to look, even though they really didn’t need to. Simon and Shepard were the only two other people in the apartment, and it was obvious that Mordelia was curious about their horrendous, Normal blanket fort. They had spent all morning working on it. Still turned out terrible, if you asked Baz. They used three chairs, the dining table, and a few books they took from Baz and Penny. Didn’t exactly look like a masterpiece.
— That, my darling sister, is my idiot boyfriend, his idiot boyfriend and their ugly blanket fort. Now can we please get back to studying?
Mordelia blinked.
— What does a blanket fort do?
Penelope glared at Baz. They did not like her death stares.
— Basil. Have you never ever built a blanket fort for your sister?
— Wouldn’t want to waste her time. Or mine.— they scoffed. Penelope rolled her eyes, still looking angry.— You said the same about wasting your morning helping Snow and the Normal to build the fort.
— Oh, sod off.
— Language.— Baz replied sharply.— There’s an actual fucking child here, don’t talk like that in front of my sodding sister, you git.
— Mordelia,— after another eyeroll, Penelope got up, taking her hand.— I think we should take a break. Let’s go play in the blanket fort.
— Yes!
Before Baz could protest, both of them were already running to the fort. Which left Baz no choice but to follow, crossing the room and sitting down on the floor next to them. Simon and Shepard moved a blanket slightly, just so they could see everyone without any outsiders peeking at what was inside their fort.
— Well, well, well. Look who came to the fortress after all that “this is stupid and I’m not wasting my time” talk.— Shepard got hir head out of the fort, looking smug.— And with a visitor! So that’s what all of that noise was about. Hey, lil’ one.
Mordelia huffed.
— I’m not little. I’m not a child, I’m 10. And I’m taller than the average for my age.
— Gee, I wonder where you came from.— Shep chuckled.— Another Pitch, this one?
— Grimm.— Baz quickly corrected zir.— But she mostly takes after her mother.
— Oh, please, I’ve known her for three seconds and I can already see that she’s a mini-you. What’s your name again, mini-Baz?
— It’s- Mordelia.— she sighed, annoyed.— Can I just come in? I’ve never been to a blanket fort before.
— Of course!— Simon finally appeared, shoving Shepard’s head a bit to the side.— You’re more than welcome here, Delia.— they both moved to the side so she could crawl into the fort with them. Before Penelope and Baz could follow, though, Simon came back, blocking the path.— Sorry. She’s welcome, but you two aren’t.
— What? But-
— You two didn’t help with the chairs, the table, the pillows, the snacks, anything. And you said it was a waste of time. Now you don’t get to enjoy Simpard Castle. Fortress. Whatever.
Baz and Penelope shared a look.
— You named your fort?
— You’re not getting in.— he gave Baz a quick peck on the lips and hid back inside, satisfied. Inside, the situation was way nicer.
Mordelia was absolutely swooning over the fort.
— Told them it would be pretty cool.— Shepard whispered to Simon, who chuckled. Ze reached out for his hand, squeezing it and letting zir head fall on his shoulder, a playful smile in the lips of both of them.— She’s losing her mind.
The fort did look great. They did their best to make it big enough for Simon’s wings to fit – eventually they did give up on that and just spelled them away, because the wings would knock the whole thing down every time Simon turned to do anything –, so it seemed big. And it was cozy, too. Shepard hung up fairy lights and placed extra blankets and some pillows on the floor to make it comfortable, plus a sleeping bag with more pillows under the table, with some food Simon made and a pile of board games he organized.
— How did you make this?— Mordelia was practically glowing.— It’s perfect!
— Thanks, kid.— Before Shep kept talking, she gave zir a ugly look, which made Simon smile.— And, yes, it’s perfect. Also, we didn’t use any magic, what makes it even more special.
She lifted an eyebrow, and Shepard laughed.
— You made this without magic?
— Do I look like a mage?
She seemed satisfied by that reply.
— Tell me about it.
Shepard turned zir head to share a look with Simon, who shrugged.
— About… Being Normal?— ze asked slowly.
— No, of course not! About the fortress.
Shepard chuckled. Of course not!
— We wanted something big and nice, so we spent all morning building it. But it’s not that hard, you know. Doesn’t even have to take long. Especially if you use magic, but I think that kind of takes the fun out of it. You can probably make one in a few minutes in your room when you go home.
— At home?— she made herself comfortable on top of some pillows.— I’m never leaving here!
— Not even for Watford in a few weeks?— Simon questioned, a playful grin on his lips. Mordelia actually stopped to think before replying.
— Not sure. I need more information.— she said, which caused Shepard to turn to Simon with a “What kind of 10 year old says that?!” expression.— What can we do here?
— Do you want to watch a movie?— Shep offered.— It’s one of the best things to do in a blanket fort, and we have snacks. We were just finishing one when you got in here. That’s why we didn’t come out to say hi when you arrived.
— Also, we thought you’d all be too busy with studying before you went to school.— Simon himself frowned at what he said. Studying before school. Those Old Families were weird, weren’t they? He shook it off.— Anyways. Movie?
Mordelia’s smile was the cutest little thing.
— Sure!
Ask anyone, Simon’s smile was also the cutest little thing.
— Nice! I’ll get popcorn and a charger for the laptop.
When Simon got out, Penelope and Baz were still on the floor by the entrance of the fort, lying down and looking bored. He held back a smile.
— If you two make the popcorn, you can come in and watch the movie with us. We can probably all fit.
Penelope didn’t hesitate before running to the kitchen. Baz got up and gave Simon a kiss.
— What are we watching?
— No idea. What does Mordelia like to watch?
— No idea either. I guess we’ll find out. When I get inside that atrocity you call a blanket fort.
— Do you want to be left out?
Baz lifted an eyebrow, with a smug expression.
— The right answer is “no”, by the way.— Simon mumbled, half-smiling.
— Fine. I’ll help Bunce with the popcorn, or she'll probably microwave it.
— I’d rather if you asked your sister about her favorite movies instead of helping Penelope. Y’know, sibling bonding doesn’t hurt. Of course, I’m only assuming. But, still. You love each other. Just talk.
Baz’s eyebrow went up again, slowly.
— Merlin, we’ve been through this.— Simon laughed nervously.— I mean it, just talk to her.
— It’s… hard. To really get to know her.— they confessed.— After being distant and emotionally unavailable for so long.— they exhaled.— I don’t want to deal with that right this second. Don’t you have any movie ideas?
— Er… Maybe...— Simon considered their options.— Shep was talking about a cartoon some days ago. It’s one of those that actually has well-developed queer characters. We’ve got four nonbinaries and a ten year-old here, I guess a queer cartoon would be something good to watch.
— We’ll probably like it better than her.— Baz mumbled jokingly.
— You totally will. You love kid’s cartoons.
Baz pretended to be annoyed before getting inside the fort.
Sometimes, the best way to spend an afternoon is to binge watch queer cartoons in a blanket fort with your family. Especially when family means a snarky ten year-old mage, her annoying older vampire sibling, their dragon boyfriend, his Normal soulless boyfriend, and zir judgy witchy girlfriend.
Perhaps even Normal blanket forts were a little magical.

Carry On Countdown - Day 10: Crossover
(Not posting on AO3)
Keep reading on Tumblr below the cut!
Words: 2401
I’m a bit late with other prompts BUT for today, I edited a Cemetery Boys scene (no spoilers, really, it’s in the beginning and the plot/summary of the book basically gives this scene away), because I couldn’t help but see similarities about Snowbaz and Yadrian, both canon and headcanon. Anyways, I love my transmasc awkward heroes and their undead nobinary gay boyfriends who may seem scary but are total sweethearts. I also changed some elements of the original story so it sounded more like Carry On, so it’s kind of a Cemetery Boys remix, or something. Anyways LOL happy COC day 10!! Hope y’all like this <3 Also thank you Aiden Thomas your gays gave new meaning to my life
Cemetery Boys AU
Simon could feel energy swarming below him.
“Do you feel that, too?” Penelope asked.
“Yeah. It’s way stronger in here.” he said. Whatever spirit that led them here was close.
Simon took a step back, and his shoe slipped. He’d stepped on a piece of cloth.
Penny moved in. “What’s that?”
“I think it’s a scarf.” Simon muttered, pointing his lantern to it. The scarf was pale blue. He bent down and carefully picked it up. As soon as his fingers made contact with the fabric, a shiver ran through his body. Electricity flooded through his veins, and he took a sharp breath. Something pulsed under his feet, synchronized with his own heartbeat.
“I think- It’s a tether.” he said, a spike of adrenaline making him feel light-headed.
When a spirit attached itself to a tether, they had to stay near it. That was why haunted houses existed, but not many cities haunted by a single ghost – spirits couldn’t venture far from their tethers. And mages could only release them and help them pass peacefully to their eternal rest once they were free of their earthly bindings.
Simon had never actually held a spirit’s tether before. They were incredibly powerful. Some of the mages claimed that mishandling a spirit’s tether would get you cursed. But Simon had never heard of anyone actually getting possessed, and he had no intention of disrespecting this tether.
“But it’s not Ebb’s. She didn’t own any silk blue scarfs, that I’m sure of.” Penelope said, reaching out as if to touch it before thinking better.
“It could be Ebb’s.” Simon tried to reason, his hope of finding his friend fighting against logic. He squeezed the scarf in his hand. Warmth spread through his palm and up his arm. He turned to Penny with a smile. “There’s only one way to find out.”
Penelope gave him a skeptical look, and Simon shrugged.
“I have to try – What if Ebb’s spirit got tethered to this instead of her staff?” he said, twisting the scarf between his fingers.
“It could be attached to someone who’s gone malefic.” Penelope said, casting a pointed look around the dilapidated church.
“Then it’s a good thing I’ve got a sword now, innit?” Simon said. Penny raised her eyebrows, but then grinned.
“All right, Greatest Mage, work your magic.”
The rush of excitement made Simon feel giddy as he knelt.
He held his hand over his hip, calling for the Sword of Mages. "In justice. In courage. In defense of the weak. In the face of the mighty. Through magic and wisdom and good." The hilt materializes in his grip, and he swings the sword up to his shoulder. Maybe it was the feel of the blade in his hand or the magic he knew flowed through his veins, but Simon felt recklessly brave.
He stood up again and tried to take a deep breath, but he was too excited, practically buzzing. His palms were sweaty. He looked over to Penelope, who gave him an enthusiastic and encouraging nod.
Simon had seen his mentor, Davy, summon spirits before. It wasn’t exactly general knowledge for mages, but he knew what to do and how to do it. It was one of the few incantations that Simon believed he could get right, like with the Sword of Mages, because those weren’t like other spells. They didn’t come so easily to other mages as regular incantations did. Magic words are tricky, and Simon had never been good with words. You have to have a good vocabulary to do magic. You have to be able to think on your feet and be brave enough to speak up. And you have to actually understand what you’re saying, how the words translate into magic.
None of that came naturally to Simon. And his magic... He was powerful, he knew that, but his magic behaved differently than everyone else’s. His magic was immediate and literal. Sometimes, it acted when he didn’t even mean to make it do anything. It just… happened.
And that was exactly what he needed right now.
He felt the magic inside him, strong and infinite. He called it to the surface, his skin suddenly warmer, and held out his arm, the scarf looped around his hand. Simon cleared his throat, trying to breathe around the lump that had formed.
“I summon you, spirit!”
For a terrifying second, nothing happened. Then, an explosion of heat and golden light. Simon sprang back, choking on the smoke.
There was a person in front of him, doubled over their hand and knees, clutching their chest.
Simon could hardly believe his eyes. “It worked!”
The spirit’s face was screwed up tight in a grimace, their fingers knotted into the material of his shirt, a beautiful floral, white with blue and purple flowers and fat striped bumblebees.
“That’s not Ebb.” Penelope tried to whisper, but she’d never had a very good inside voice.
Simon groaned and dragged a hand over his face. On the bright side, he had actually summoned a real-life spirit
On the not-so-bright side, he had summoned the wrong one.
“Obviously.” Simon growled back, unable to look away from the spirit as they gasped for breath, the muscles in their neck straining. They had that translucent quality around the edges, like all spirits, Their eyes swung to Simon and Penny, with a handsome but very angry face, their grimace now more of a sneer.
“Well, at least it’s not a malefic spirit?” Penny offered.
The person staggered to their feet, upright but unsteady. “Who the hell are you?”, they snarled, dark grey eyes blazing, sharp as obsidian.
“Uhh” was Simon’s unhelpful reply, suddenly back to being capable of forming a coherent sentence.
“Where am I?” the person’s voice coming out of them in a tight roar, head tilting back as they took in their surroundings. “Am I in a church?” their attention swung back to Simon and Penelope with an accusing glare. “Who let me in a church?”
Familiarity prickled at the back of Simon’s mind, racing to place their sharp edges, posh look, and the irritated, cold tone in their voice.
“Uh- well- you see,” Simon stammered, not really sure how to explain their situation, but he wasn’t given the chance to finish. The person’s eyes snagged on the scarf still dangling from Simon’s hand.
“Hey!” Simon saw their anger swell, hunching their shoulders, and propelling them forward. The spirit stomped up to him, fire in their eyes. “That’s mine.”
They reached out to snatch the scarf, but their hand went right through it. They frowned and tried again, and when their hand slid through it a second time, they froze, blinked their eyes, and slowly waved it back and forth.
Their eyes went wide, and they stumbled back. “What the hell is this?” they demanded to know, looking between their hand and the scarf and Simon and Penelope.
“Wow, this is really awkward.” Simon said, scratching at the back of his neck. Penelope seemed less worried.
“Well, there’s no denying you’re an actual mage now.” she said, circling the spirit with keen interest. They scowled at her.
“Who are you, and what are you doing with my scarf?” they demanded, looking to Simon for answers.
“Well, uh, I used it to summon you.” he tried.
The spirit crossed their arms, arching a thick eyebrow.
“Yeah, we thought it might have belonged to Ebb.” What was the gentlest way to tell someone they were dead?
“Ebeneza. Our friend.” Penelope specified.
The spirit didn’t seem at all interested in who Ebb was. “It’s mine.” they insisted with a growl. “It belonged to my mother. It’s got our last name on it see?” their fingers curling in demand.
Simon turned the fabric over to find that a name had indeed been recorded in a tip. He blinked. “Oh.” The delicate cursive letters read PITCH. “Oh.”
The Pitch family was well known, and also magickal. They didn’t do any death-related magic, though, not like Davy or the Bunces – they were magickal authorities. Royalty, aristocrats, leaders. Researchers, linguists. They knew spells like no other magickal families. They were fire magicians, brilliant with fire. But they weren’t involved with action, not like the mages Simon and Penelope grew with. The Pitches didn’t know about death magick, not like them.
Simon knew the Pitch’s heir, Baz Pitch, or rather knew of them. They went to highschool together, and Baz had a bit of a... reputation. They used to be a top student, and when they were roaming the halls it was hard to not notice them. They had the sort of presence that demanded everyone’s attention without needing to ask. They were hard to miss.
Until they got expelled.
“Do you know how you got here?” Simon questioned them. Baz glared.
“No. All I remember is walking down the street with my friends. Then something- someone-” they frowned. “I just remember getting knocked over.” They unconsciously rubbed at the same point on their chest, near their heart. “Then the next thing I knew, I was in a church with you two.”
Three beats passed before Baz’s eyes went wide. “I died, didn’t I?” Simon and Penelope looked at each other. “Am I dead?”
Simon gave a small nod. Baz stumbled back a step, their body wavering in and out of existence for a moment. “Oh, Crowley. My aunt is going to kill me.” They pressed both hands against their face and groaned against their palms.
“Looks like someone already beat her to it.” Penelope pointed out.
“So I’m a spirit now.” Baz scowled, ignoring the girl. They didn’t sound angry or dismayed, just… annoyed. As if this were just an inconvenience. “And you’re also mages, I suppose. So you can send spirits to the afterlife, right?”
“Yes- Well, no-” Simon fumbled, trying to explain himself. “I should be able to- er, I guess- I haven’t done the releasing part yet-”
“Great. So I’m stuck with two shitty witches.”
Annoyance flared in Simon. “Look, this is my first time, okay?” Baz blinked slowly at him, unimpressed. “You- You’re attached to a tether, your scarf. So I just need to destroy the-”
“No, no way!” Baz shook their head. “That’s my mother’s scarf, you are not destroying it.” They tried to snatch it from Simon, but, again, they were left with a fistful of empty air. Penelope chuckled.
“No, just listen-” Simon gripped his blade, raising it.
Baz scoffed, which was not how Simon thought any sane person should react to getting a sword pointed at them.
“What are you going to do, stab me?” Baz’s laughter was flat and sharp. “Already dead, remember?”
“I’m not going to stab you!” No matter how tempting it is, Simon thought. Penelope cut in.
“He can use this to destroy the tie keeping you here.” Baz opened their mouth to argue, but Penny pressed on. “Not the scarf, just the tie anchoring you to the scarf. Then you can go to the afterlife and be at peace, okay?”
Baz smirked. “Yeah, no. He’s not doing that.”
Simon groaned. Of course the first spirit he summoned was a git that wouldn’t just be released willingly. No, he had to get stuck with the one who had an attitude problem.
“I’m doing this. Right now.” Simon said. “We still need to find Ebb, and, besides, if you stay here like this for too long, you’ll turn all dark and violent and start hurting people.”
Baz crossed their arms over their chest. “No.” Simon looked at Penelope for help, but she just shrugged her shoulders.
“You’re leaving me no choice.” Simon pushed his jaw forward to stand his ground. A thick eyebrow quirked. Simon called for his magic, squeezing the scarf in his hand. “Show me the bond!”
The Sword of Mages and the scarf glowed bright, filling the church with a warm blaze that made all three of them squint. A golden thread sparked to life in the air, starting from the blue fabric and ending at the center of Baz’s chest.
Simon inhaled a deep breath. “I set you free for the next life!” he sliced his sword through the air, aiming directly for the golden thread. Instead of severing it, the edge of the blade caught on the line. The Sword of Mages vibrated in his hand, and small sparks flew from where they met.
Baz relaxed, but Simon wasn’t giving up just yet. He tried slicing through it again, then tried sawing at it, but all it did was send more sparks flying and make his shoulder hurt.
Simon turned over to see an obnoxious smirk on Baz’s face.
“Wow. You really suck at this.” they said, looking pleased with themselves. Simon turned to Penelope.
His heart hammered in his ears, and his throat felt like it was closing up on him. The sudden aching in his chest (surely not helped by his tight binder) threatened to swallow him whole. Penny was immediately at his side, her voice calm and soothing as she gripped his arms.
“Don’t worry about this! This isn’t your fault, Si.” she jerked her head in Baz’s direction. “They’re probably too bull-headed to cross over.”
“Hey!”
Penelope ignored their protest. “Just like my great-aunt, remember?”
“Maybe.” Simon mumbled. He didn’t want to think about it. Shame burned hot on his cheeks.
“Look.” Baz called. “I’m willing to cut you a deal.”
Simon and Penny turned to them.
“I’ve got unfinished business.” Baz said, brow furrowed. “And I need to check on my friends. They were with me when I died, I need to make sure they’re okay.” their face twisted between annoyance and something that could’ve been worry. “And maybe they know who got me. That could be connected-” They shook their head, interrupting themselves. “If you help me on a personal project, and let me find my friends and make sure they’re okay, I will willingly let you do what you need to do and send me to the afterlife.”
Simon looked at Penelope, who shrugged. “I don’t think we have much of a choice here.”
“Okay.” Simon took a step forward. “Wait. What’s this ‘personal project’ you’re talking about?”
Baz’s features got rigid. They stepped closer to Simon.
“My mother’s killer walks. You are going to help me find out who he is, and avenge her, and bring her peace.”
