I'm not sure I mentioned this here before, but it's been on my mind.

I call myself a "translator" for the sake of brevity and because that's my favorite part of the job. But I do more things at work, depending who needs what at any particular time. Usually, when I'm not translating, I'm reviewing other translators' work.

So the other day I was checking a translation done by someone else.

It was dry stuff. The topic was unpleasant, because it was along the lines of "don't advertise self-harm, don't instigate others to commit suicide, don't share CSAM, don't..." - you know. Pages and pages of things that you're not allowed to do when interacting with others online. For good reason.

ANYWAY.

There was a note there saying that, if you're considering suicide, you should call any of a list of suicide hotlines.

SO.

The translator.

I don't know, maybe they turned their brain off.

Because they translated "hotline" literally.

Which I admit might not sound like a problem to y'all anglophones living in non-Romanian speaking countries. EXCEPT.

Now the sentence said, "If you're considering suicide, please contact any of the following phone sex lines for suicides."

And since I fixed that, I think about it every day. Granted, not that many days have passed, but still.

(A phone sex line is called a "hotline" here because "hot" = "horny". Phone sex line ads back in the day had women saying "Call me, I'm hot".)

It always makes me laugh to see "probably machine-translated" fails. I've encountered quite a few applications that translated "draft" as its literal meaning. I think my 2023 Furby also has a couple weird ones. Every now and then I'll just be puzzled by a sentence only to realize it was a mistranslation from English later on.

In spite of the whole bonkers thing of TP Ganon wielding his own execution sword, I find it fascinating that he is using a weapon of Light to fight you --a weapon originally conceived for purposes of justice, and that light still steeps through him through the wound.

And, to top it all off, Link uses tools more aligned with darkness to fight him back (turning into a wolf, Midna becoming a eldritch horror...)
