April 24, 2022:
Book 1 of a promising series. I loved introducing recognizable symptoms to the Damaged Badass trope, and the sidekick charmed my pants off. However, if asked why any character went to x or did y, I couldn't tell ya. Couldn't always follow the thread 6.5/10 #WhatsKenyaReading

Book review: Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse
My liveblog of reading it.
Short review:
The book is good but didn't quite click with me.
Long review:
The book is about the monster slayer Maggie who is chasing down some new type of monsters that have started to show up. She is joined in her quest by Kai who appears to be her oposite in almost every way.
The plot is fairly simple but works. While there is a mystery about who is creating these new monsters and a few twists it still felt like the monster plot fell in the background to the chacter drama. The character drama is not bad but tends to overshadow the monster plot which sometimes makes the treath of monsters killing people not feel that urgent. There's quite a bit of stuff that's happening in the story but the pacing felt a bit uneven. The first half of the book felt a bit slow while the ending was intense and at points almost rushed. I think it might have worked a bit better if the monster plot got fleshed out a bit more or have the characters focus on it more instead of only whenever they happened to stumble into it. B
The characters are fleshed out, are believable and work well together. A-
The world is interesting with an intruiging concept. It is also introduced fairly naturally through the characters (who all are used to it). I wish there was a bit more exploration of how the world works. B
The writing works well for the most part with my only real nitpick being the fight scenes. The fight scenes were described in detail of how the characters moved but because they for the most part were put in a single paragraph it could get a bit confusing to read. I think it might have worked better if the action was divided up into a few more paragraphs? A-
Rating: B+

January Wrap Up--
Seeing how few books I read physically this month makes me want to laugh. Mostly because my reading goal for 2023 is to read less and I’ve actually read 14 books for the month of January. Can I really call that a fail? I mean, I have to, I read MORE this month than most months last year and my goal was to read LESS. Oh, this girl is a mess. Let’s break down what I read and where I got it from.
Comics/Graphic Novels--
Novellas/Short Stories--
1. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley (Kindle)-- 1 star.
2. Mistakenly Married by Victorine E. Lieske (Kindle)-- 2.25 stars.
3. Blissfully Married by Victorine E. Lieske (Kindle)-- 3.75 stars.
4. Acting Married by Victorine E. Lieske (Kindle)-- 3.5 stars.
Novels--
1. The Vacation by John Marrs (Kindle)-- 3.75 stars.
2. Terrier by Tamora Pierce (apparently already unhauled?)-- 3 stars.
3. The Quarter Storm by Veronica G. Henry (Kindle)-- 1.75 stars.
4. Royals by Rachel Hawkins-- 3.75 stars.
5. Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse-- 3.5 stars.
6. Upon a Waking Dream by J.S. Bailey (NetGalley)-- 3.125 stars averaged.
7. The Foreign Exchange by Veronica G. Henry (NetGalley)-- 2 stars.
8. The Mistake by Elle Kennedy (Kindle)-- 3 stars.
9. The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten (NetGalley)-- 4.25 stars.
10. Last on the List by Amy Daws (Kindle)-- 2.25 stars.
This makes the average rating for the month 2.92 stars which is really low for my average star rating. However, I did focus most of my reading in January on clearing out my Kindle and my NetGalley as much as I could. I plan on doing that in February as well, but I’m hoping I’ll be able to enjoy more of what I read next month.

Chapter 38 - The last chapter.
It's a short update on the state of things for Maggie. Turns out Tah is alive (yay) and is currently living in her trailer. He seems aware of the state of things with Kai and is waiting for the latters return together with Maggie. Now that she has so many people who hate her/wants her dead it's good with a few allies.
Maggie is also with her dogs again and I hate to end on a bit of a sour note, but why does she have dogs? They've been mentioned like three times in the story, Maggie goes several days without caring for them because they're "able to care for themselves", and have done nothing for the plot. I assume they'll serve some purpose later in the series but in this book it feels weird to be introduced to her dogs and then never see them do or affect the story in any way.
