listening to @attolianarchives and im on qoa and ok

a few chapters ago they were talking about the irene backstory chapter and wondering whether if you got that at the beginning of the book would the subsequent event raise or lower your opinion of her

and i think without question it would lower your opinion of her. as it stands she is a villain being redeemed, but in the other direction its... its a character you saw the humanity in sink to a new low. its someone you had hopes for, now committing this irreversible act

it would have felt like the nail in the coffin of any possible redemption

it would have felt like a betrayal

but now theyre on the battle by the cliff and theyre talking about gen’s hatred of nahusaresh and how its a redirect of his negative feelings instead of being angry with attolia for cutting his hand off he lets himself feel that anger for nahusaresh. he says attolia would have killed him if not for the mede intervention

and thats the thing, gen DID get the information in the opposite order

for him it was this betrayal from someone he was already in love with! and if he had just died like he expected and like attolia was going to do he would not have had to live with the knowledge of that betrayal

and THATS i think really where the anger with nahusaresh comes from in large part
