Beyond Coogee (Week 2)
After a week of exploring Coogee and the surrounding area, my housemates and I felt prepared to embark on a voyage inland. In Surry Hills, a suburb of Sydney known for its stylish cultural and cafe scene, we embraced our duties as college students and went thrifting. I couldn’t name each shop we walked into or every hat I tried on, but I could, with much gusto and enthusiasm, show you exactly where I got the Nutella Latte that changed my life (I just wish it lasted me more than two minutes). Apparently, Australia has a very strong coffee culture which was well established before coffee chains even tried to enter the market - there are less than 70 Starbucks shops in Australia compared to over 17,000 spread across the 50 United States. The coffee tastes even better after converting the cost of the coffee to USD and seeing that it cost me half the price of its counterpart in America.
Tumblr media
With our appetites built up, we made our way towards Chinatown where we enjoyed some authentic Chinese dishes followed by my favorite Oolong Tea Boba.
Tumblr media
A habitual Coogee Beach swim and coastal walk followed later that day joined by Lauren and Shaunak, a student from Georgia Tech. The three of us grew to appreciate each other’s company as we contemplate the philosophical on our walks - everything from how our relationships with our friends and families shape us to commentary on the realities of tourism.
Tumblr media
Before we knew it, the NCAA championship was upon us! Luckily, Lauren and I had prepared a watch party at the same local bar where we’d watched the semi-finals. This time, determined to draw a larger crowd, we created a flyer that could be easily passed around amongst students in the area. Though not all UM fans, students crowded the bar and seats ran out after the first hour to watch us take the trophy. Go blue!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later in the week, a trip to Bondi Beach went south when an incident occurred in the water. I had just gotten out of the water when I noticed a large crowd forming in the northern end of the beach. After some inspection, it turned out that somebody had been rescued from the water and was getting medical attention on the shore. Film crews surrounded the area. Bondi Rescue is a TV show filmed at Bondi Beech that follows lifeguards as they locate drownings, carry out rescues, and handle other conflicts in and around the water of the busiest beach in Australia. The sight reminded me of just how dangerous the ocean can be with waves reaching 5ft above the water. Lifeguarding is often regarded as a common summer job for teenagers in the US, but in Australia it’s taken quite seriously. Just a few minutes at Bondi Beach is enough to see a lifeguard tell someone to swim to a designated area, leave the water if it’s declared unsafe, or even make a rescue. Having been a lifeguard myself, safety is always at the top of my mind when I swim, but let me tell you - these waves are not to be messed with.
With week 3 approaching, I’m excited to take my first trip out of Sydney to the Gold Coast! Cheers!

Acamera sweeps under Sydney Harbour Bridge, to the right is the Opera House and then we’re at Fleet Base East in Woolloomooloo. It could be an ad for Tourism Australia, except soon there’s a dead US sailor floating in the water. It’s not so much, “Where bloody hell are we?” more “What the bloody hell is going on?”
Tumblr media
Now, it’s here. And for that, you can thank AUKUS, the contentious nuclear submarine deal between Australia, the US and the UK, which provides a great excuse for getting NCIS agents on Australian soil.
“That’s what the show is piggybacking off,” says Todd Lasance, who plays Australian Federal Police agent Sergeant Jim “JD” Dempsey who is called in to investigate the sailor’s death. The catch? Because the sailor was a US citizen, NCIS also has jurisdiction over the investigation.
Tumblr media
Mackey (Swann) and JD (Lasance) face off over who gets to investigate the death of a US sailor in NCIS: Sydney.
Enter Olivia Swann, who plays NCIS Special Agent Michelle Mackey. “She’s a very straightforward woman, she’s here to get a job done,” says Swann. “She’s here to do things her own way, she follows her own rules. So having to join forces with these larrikin, laid-back Aussies is not her ideal way of working.”
Tumblr media
It’s a big swing and one I have been so curious about since the show was announced last year. Back then, it seemed ludicrous – how could NCIS even operate here? Would every dead body have a major tourism landmark in the background? How many times can they visit Bondi? Would they throw another shrimp on the barbie?
Tumblr media
NCIS: Sydney is a throwback to the kind of police dramas we used to do so well, such as Rush, starring Jolene Anderson, Rodger Corser and Callan Mulvey.
But, you know what? It works, it really does. It’s zippy and light on its feet, with a distinctive Australian twang. It’s a throwback to the type of police action dramas we used to do – Police Rescue, Water Rats and Rush. Yes, it’s still slightly absurd that the AFP would team up with the NCIS crew and that AUKUS would be the catalyst, but it’s the back end of a rank 2023, so let’s go with it.
“With NCIS, the audience comes for the crime, but stays for the characters and chemistry,” says Lasance. “And that is very true for our series. It centres around interesting and well-rounded and nuanced characters, and when they come together, it’s just exciting stuff. They’re flawed people, but also so lovable.”
‘I wonder why they haven’t done this?’
Part of the enduring popularity of NCIS is that it’s the opposite of every cult, word-of-mouth, zeitgeisty show ever made. It’s easygoing, almost daggy TV. Everyone knows how it works – mysterious death in the first five minutes, some office banter, investigation of said death, a scene or two in the autopsy room or forensic lab, a red herring, then a chase, suspect is caught, more banter and cue credits. And repeat.
Tumblr media
“My very first reaction was: I wonder why they haven’t done this already?” says O’Neill, who created the ABC series Les Norton.
So he watched a lot of NCIS – the Washington original, plus the Los Angeles, New Orleans and Hawaii spin-offs – and realised that far from creating a carbon copy of the “mothership”, each spin-off worked because it had its own identity.
“They expanded the universe, but they never made the same show twice,” says O’Neill. “So the original show, which is now in its 20th year, is a really unique show. It has its own swagger, its own tempo, its own tonality. But when they came to make NCIS: LA, it wasn’t the same show. They really took a step to the side and a couple of steps in a different direction to make sure that it stood out as a distinctive version of a show that shares a lot of DNA, but isn’t the same.”
Tumblr media
And while these building blocks may seem creatively restrictive, O’Neill found them liberating.
“There is an expectation from the audience that this is going to be a quirky family, where you have these archetypes that exist within it,” says O’Neill. “Fortunately, we have those archetypes in Australia, and they’re not really the same as the ones that America has.
Tumblr media
The other ingredient O’Neill wanted was humour. Whereas the US versions are cheesy, at best – Mark Harmon couldn’t crack a smile if he tried – NCIS: Sydney burrows into the culture clash between the US and Australia. The slang for yanks, “septic”, has to be explained, as does our coffee. There’s drag queens at Bondi and mustachioed hipsters in Marrickville, while a chase through a narrow terrace house is one you won’t find in Los Angeles.
“What I think makes this show such a behemoth – someone was telling me they reckon there’s four and a quarter trillion minutes of this show that has been viewed around the world since its inception – is that at the core of its success is the fact it’s fun. There’s a wink to it, there’s a twinkle in its eye,” says O’Neill.
Tumblr media
‘Just be still’
One of the other main building blocks of NCIS is that each episode opens with a death – the sillier the better (one recent one had hairy body chunks falling from the sky onto a child’s birthday party). But what I want to know is, how do you play a dead body?
“You know, I had the same question,” says Michael Jupp, a stunt performer who was asked to, well, play dead. “I’ve done my fair share of acting and stunt work, but I’ve never played a dead body. So the first place you go, as anyone, is Google, to have a little look at the experiences of other people. I asked a few of my actor friends, and they’re like, ‘Just be still’.”
Jupp’s character has a fairly pedestrian death by NCIS standards – a drug-induced heart attack – but it required him to stagger while running before eventually collapsing. He then had to lie on the ground for a few hours while filming carried on around him.
“You’re just still and you try not to breathe with your chest, so you don’t look alive,” he says. “And if you do need to take a breath, go deep in the belly.”
Jupp also spent a couple of days on the autopsy table. “They make you super pale, with purpley dark bits under your eyes to make you look a bit lifeless,” says Jupp. “Then, because it was an investigative autopsy, they had to put prosthetics on my chest. The first thing we did was the sewn-up version, with the big Y-shape and stitches.
“Then there was a prosthetic change, where they put the open chest on. And that was like a massive build, from hip to shoulder. I couldn’t move at all, they were like: ‘If you move, it’ll break the seams and we’ll have to start again’.”
And the best thing about being a dead body? “It was a lot of getting paid to lie down,” says Jupp.
‘All sorts of sticky situations’
If O’Neill has his way, there’ll be plenty more opportunities for actors to play dead. “I can imagine a couple of [future] episodes shot up in Darwin,” he says. “There’s a huge port up in Darwin that houses a continual marine rotation unit, of anywhere between 3000 and 4000 Marines who get in all sorts of sticky situations up there.”
What about other US TV franchises, does O’Neill see a future with Law and Order: Melbourne perhaps?
“Melbourne can have Law and Order and then we can keep NCIS: Sydney and we can just co-exist,” he says. “The world is in a pretty dark place right now. I was just talking to one of my story producers and she said it’s actually good to come to work and be thinking of stories that are slightly escapist, where you can tell a story and wrap it up and actually love the people for what they’re doing. And I hope audiences feel that.”
NCIS: Sydney streams on Paramount+ from November 10.

Tbh.....I don't think it's entirely all on either parties PR teams for this mess. The group outings were clearly to promote Australian tourism attractions...it's already publicly known the the Australian government helped fund the movie. I honestly don't think there was any PR beyond contractual obligation for the funding that at that point.
I don't think either team was expecting Gigi (who supposedly left Australia on good terms with Glen) to start posting break up songs and hint at infidelity without actually coming out and saying anything. Once that happened.....there was no way to stop the fans from going feral and boom. We now have allegations that Glen cheated on Gigi to try to work damage control with.
The friendliness on the red carpet is no surprise. We've seen Glen with literally all of his costars in the past. As someone said, the man can flirt with an umbrella.
So, end of day I don't think all the photos were the original PR plan to promote this movie. I think it just turned into a PR nightmare that they've been trying to clean up after Gigi started posting. Now it's turning into PR gold because Glen is handling his shit and continuing to work without letting his personal life affect him. Studios love to see that.
Everyone can hate on me for blaming Gigi for this mess if they want, but at the end of the day the allegations are FAN created, purely because of her social media activity. Very few people looked twice at those photos before that. She has a part to play in this, whether it was her posting emotionally and inadvertently causing drama or a deliberate plan to get some positive media attention out of a breakup with one of the rising stars of the year.
I'm really hoping that it was just that she was expressing her emotions and not her trying to get a win out of the breakup....cause if it's the latter, that shit doesn't age well at all.
It was all definitely to help promote everything. I mean, they were going to nature reserves and that's something Australia is known for, rightfully so.
Glen seems like a genuinely sweet guy and, just by all the cute behind the scenes stuff from Top Gun he posted during the Oscars, and the stuff posted by the other cast members on their various social media accounts, it's obvious he knows how to have fun with his costars and friends. There's nothing wrong with that at all.
It seems like Glen and Sydney were just kinda hanging out and being friendly at first and people immediately started saying there was more which, lbr, is to be expected. You've got two people playing in a romantic movie, of course people are gonna start shipping them. But if Gigi started acting out of pocket and posting things without any of the teams' knowledge, that could explain why it took a minute for anything to come out and then all of a sudden it was they "broke up weeks ago" and she "couldn't deal with the long distance". At the end of the day, she was the one who was posting veiled hints about breaking up, Glen didn't say anything, he's just out here minding his business and like you said, he's handling his shit and doing his job.
Whether what she posted was genuine or was a way to get a leg up, she was the one who posted things which started the rumors and she undoubtedly knew what what was gonna happen once she did that.

Newcastle House Prices & Property Trends 2023
Tumblr media
The Newcastle region in New South Wales is a popular destination for homebuyers due to its excellent weather, location, and strong economy. The region’s picturesque beaches, booming industries, and vibrant culture have historically benefited its property market. However, like many areas across Australia, Newcastle’s property prices have experienced a state of flux since the global pandemic in 2020.
To stay prepared and equipped to navigate the property market in 2023, it’s essential to research and understand the past and current real estate trends in Newcastle, NSW. This article will take a look at Newcastle’s housing market — past, present, and future — and identify key factors influencing property prices and the best high-growth suburbs to watch in 2023.
Newcastle, NSW – 2023 Region Profile Newcastle is located on the Hunter River, about 160 kilometres north of Sydney. With a total region population of 461,000 people in 2023 and a city population of 174,175, Newcastle is a significant economic and education hub for the Hunter Region.
Here are some key statistics about the Newcastle region for 2023:
Population: 461,000
Population growth rate: 0.88%
Population density: 1,103 people per kilometre
Median weekly household income: $1,760
Median house price: $1,250,000
Median unit price: $773,750
Median house rental price: $650
Median unit rental price: $600
A Historical Look at Newcastle’s Housing Market Newcastle’s property market experienced a significant boom in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to the city’s strong economy and growing population. In recent decades and coming into the 21st century, Newcastle’s property market has continued to grow, as has its economy. Newcastle’s economy is strengthened by the major industries at work in the city, including manufacturing, mining, and tourism. Newcastle also benefits from its proximity to Sydney — one of Australia’s most prosperous and populated cities.
The Newcastle region population is the driving factor behind Newcastle property trends. The population nearly doubled in the last 50 years. Growth has slowed in recent years to a current growth rate of 0.88% but has remained consistently positive since 1950 — the growth rate ranges from 0.25% to 5.11%. According to U.N. Projections, the region’s population will reach 500,000 by 2031. Driving factors behind population growth include the strength of the economy, the availability of jobs, and the wide range of affordable housing and rental properties.
Average House Prices & State of the Market in Newcastle Newcastle’s average house and unit prices have historically increased in accordance with the economy and the rising demand for properties. However, the past year has seen a marginal slowdown of this trend — and even a small turnaround.
The average house and unit prices were $1,215,000 and $835,500, respectively, in Quarter 3 of 2022. According to recent data from Quarter 1, 2023, those average prices are now $1,250,000 and $773,750. So, in the last six months, the average house price has increased by 2.88%, and the average unit price has decreased by 7.39% — an intriguing result.
To investigate this simultaneous increase and decrease, it’s worth going further back to see what things were like in Q1, 2022. Back then, Newcastle house prices averaged at $1.5 million and unit prices at $819,750. From Q1 in 2021, this represents a year-on-year growth of 7.1% for houses and 32.2% for units.
Jumping back to Q1 2023, the year-on-year change from 2022 to 2023 is a property price decline of 18.6% for houses and 7.3% for units — an opposing change from what occurred between 2021 and 2022. The number of property sales also declined dramatically between Q1 2022 and Q1 2023 — a 40% decrease for houses and a 26.9% decrease for units.
Even though property prices are down, rental prices are still rising — especially for apartments, which are much more popular for buying and renting in the Newcastle region and CBD. Also, vacancy rates in the Newcastle region are low — around 1%.
The combination of these trends poses an interesting state for the Newcastle property market in 2023. The conclusion? Now is a perfect time to invest in property and profit from rental yields.
Key Factors Influencing Newcastle’s Property Market in 2023
Global and local economy Newcastle’s property market is heavily affected by economic trends and, subsequently, the cost of operations. A strong economy (global and local) can increase the demand for housing — which can drive prices up. As a central employment hub, Newcastle’s economy and population have been consistently strong, so property prices have seen an overall increase from year to year and decade to decade, albeit with a slight decline this past year, likely linked to a reduction of job opportunities as more people move interstate for work.
Increased demand for properties In 2023, there is a high ongoing demand for rental properties and investment properties alike. As Newcastle’s population continues to grow, more people than ever are looking for affordable rental properties. As such, there is also an increased demand for investment properties from those who want to take advantage of high rental yields and potential capital growth.
Pandemic recovery phase The real estate sector in Newcastle is also in the middle of a pandemic recovery phase, which has resulted in hard-to-predict fluctuations in property prices and rental costs across the region (and Australia-wide). The pandemic will likely continue to have an impact on Newcastle’s property market in 2023.
Property Market Trends in Newcastle for 2023 Investment properties: The demand for investment properties in Newcastle is driven by strong rental yields, increased competition, and a slight decrease in property prices (mainly for units. Lower property prices make 2023 an excellent time to buy an investment property and wait for property prices to go back up.
Average rental price: Newcastle’s rental prices for houses averaged out at $650 per week between May 2022 and April 2023 and $600 per week for units. Rental prices for houses are down 13% from the previous year, while they are up 5.3% for units, according to the latest data from Real Estate. The trend shows that apartments for rent are much more popular than houses.
Rental yields: As with many other cities, Newcastle’s rental yields are expected to remain fairly strong, making it a good time for investors to rent out their properties, especially apartments. The average rental yield for units is 3.9% and 2.7% for houses.
High Growth Areas to Watch for Newcastle, NSW, in 2023 One of the best ways to earn a passive income is to invest in a property and watch it grow over time. Some of the best high-growth suburbs to watch in Newcastle include:
Merewether, a popular beachside suburb with high investment value.
Adamstown Heights, a residential area with affordable house and units prices.
Mayfield, set against the Hunter River, with a low median house price.
Charlestown, one of Newcastle’s best shopping destinations with affordable house and unit prices.
These suburbs present some of the best investment opportunities in Newcastle for 2023. If you’re considering investing in Newcastle, it’s essential to keep an eye on house prices and property trends to make an informed decision about where you invest and what type of property you purchase.
Navigating the 2023 Newcastle Property Market Newcastle’s 2023 property market is dynamic and everchanging, with constantly evolving real estate trends. The rises and falls in property prices and rental demand are dependent mainly on population, economic growth, and post-pandemic motivations, but it can be hard to tell why they fluctuate the way they do. This makes the Newcastle property market complex, hard to predict, and challenging to navigate. That’s where Wise Buy Group can help. Our expert team of mortgage brokers can get you access to the most competitive loan rates in Newcastle, helping you find the best property in this NSW region. What are the characteristics of a tourist-friendly destination?
Tourism can bring economic benefits and job opportunities. But sustainable tourism is crucial for long-term success. Sustainable tourism benefits both the local economy and the tourists. It’s attractive as well as convenient for tourists.
Attractions, accessibility, amenities, accommodations, packages, activities, and ancillary services are primary components of any destination. Travel opportunities, arrangements, and information are some more components. These elements make a destination suitable and available for tourists.
Agents like Business Flight Shop will provide you with the necessary support. They will help you to book flights to USA from UK or anywhere else from responsible airlines.
There are many gorgeous and fascinating places worldwide, for example- Kamchatka in Russia. They don't have the infrastructure (good & safe roads and airplanes, good hotels, safe food, water, and air) to support tourists. It’s a case of attraction with no accessibility, amenities, or other facilities.
These are some simple factors that can help a town become tourist-friendly:
A small, hardworking & friendly, year-round local population (human infrastructure). This helps to support tourism.
Local guides who can speak some foreign languages.
A reliable local media presence. This enhances the town's reputation and advertises events. It boosts community engagement and participation. You’ll surely take flights to Philippines from UK after you see the advertisements about Philippines.
Some convenient & comfortable infrastructure.
Has both summer and winter attractions to bring in the economy year-round.
A clean, law-abiding downtown with 100% occupancy. Flights to Sydney from UK will ensure this.
Laws that preserve scenic vistas and keep property values high. Environmental laws make it hard to build houses, leading to scarcity. The current properties become expensive. Hence, overcrowding is avoided.
Food must include some non-local/global food as well. Take flights to South Korea from UK to enjoy the local food.
Local craft shops for buying souvenirs at reasonable prices.
Tourist destinations differ from one another depending on weather, history, culture, traditions, public transportation, food, and hospitality.

'It’s a huge shift': Cape Breton businesses in danger of closing due to worker shortages
Restaurant staff have been hard to come by in Cape Breton in recent months.
At Jane’s Restaurant and Pizzeria along Highway 105 in Bras d'or, N.S., it's the most trouble the owner has had hiring in more than 30 years working there.
Owner Mary Devoe recently posted on social media that her restaurant will be closed two days a week until they can find full staff.
She says there simply doesn't seem to be enough qualified workers, adding her business is too far out of the way to attract international students.
"We've had hires, but they don't seem to stick around or stay,” Devoe said. "I get tired of training people and getting them right where you need them, and then two or three months later, they're up and gone. As long as I've been in this business, this is probably the worst I've ever seen it."
At the Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce, folders full of resumes are further evidence.
"It's a huge shift. I've never seen 'help wanted' signs in my hometown of Louisbourg until the last three years,” said Chamber CEO Jenna Lahey.
In late February, the Miner's Village Restaurant in Glace Bay closed due to an insufficient number of workers.
Another eatery along Sydney's boardwalk did the same a short time later.
Lahey said hiring is even tougher in rural areas and added there are concerns that's where they might see a hit during the coming tourism season.
"So when they're traveling, say around the Cabot Trail or around the coastline, and they can't find somewhere to get something to eat, it's going to be bad,” Lahey said.
Back at her restaurant in Bras d'or, Devoe says she'll need at least three more cooks to operate at full capacity this summer.
Last year, they had to cut their busy season short.
"I hope we'll be able to acquire some people before that time. That's the end goal,” she said.
For now, Devoe plans to head to a job fair in nearby North Sydney on Thursday in hopes of finding help to keep the open sign on.
