Having got into the habit of reading a few pages of a Pratchett book every night before bed, I finally reread the Nomes trilogy, which was one of the very first Pratchett stories I read, when I was 14 or so, long before discovering the Discworld, and I LOVED it so much. I remember ranting about it to my (very fantasy-adverse) mother in her car once. The bromeliad thing blew my mind back then!

Curiously, though, I'd never drawn these characters before. That is now fixed! Have a little gallery of nomes:

It's kinda funny how we met. It was in November 2017 and we both were deep in shits. Like REALLY DEEP MAN. We both went through anorexia Nervosa. So we met at the psychiatric ward in a hospital in Pilsen.

And now I can tell for both of we're out of it.

She's still struggling with a weight a little bit now but her mind is clear ✨

Work continues.

I am acclimatising to a larger scale and the measure it necessitates. Progress is slower. The three paintings that I'm working are bigger and more ambitious than any I've attempted thus far. It has overwhelmed me at times in context of the last 18 months. I am willingly bound to the challenge too, the pursuit of growth. I am pushing myself in technical terms and in what is possible in painting.

Good to correspond with Jac this week and to see developments in her own painting, including her self portrait. It is different to my painting as of course it must be. A portrait is not a person, though it may aspire to the person's presence in essence. It is the person run through the filter of the painters' fictions, ambitions, a negotiation, a potholed thicket of private and public faces, conscious and subconscious motivations. I am impressed with the quality of paint in the skin, the flesh of the face. I note, also, that we have some similarities at this point. Light face on a dark background, contrasts between resolved form and dissolving spaces. I know Jac well enough to think that we share some things in common, not well enough to know how deeply or where the edges of our differences truly lie. Portraits perhaps lie truly.

I see also a large figure painting poised at the intersection of birth and death. An ambitious figure, lifting, abandoning gravity, but still under a pressure of forces. A tension that shifts as from blue to black. A strong negative space in the centre in the arching curve of the small of the back evokes what? Bird skull, plague doctor or organ of life. The flesh is shimmering, light in transition, dawn waters.

I am working through the boy in the tree, who is both Lleu and me as a child, with a boar who is both there, present, physical, and not there, cut from rock in a line that frees her spirit to pursue my own. A first lick of deaths jaw. Grass that is grass and fallen flesh, feather, which I am building with the torrit mixed scrapings of each sessions palette. A gesture towards death from life. It must sit in a crust of burnt fern, impasto, cold wax perhaps which must amplify the soft cool bruise of the boys flesh. I think of and covet Kiefers empty fields, their stark physicality. Do I put the houses on the hill, locating in council estate valleys, or leave it as a dream landscape, spatially real but strange, anonymous enough for dreaming in the viewer. These are questions that sit the painting in precipitous balance between a paint experience or slightly quaint illustration. It may cost a great deal in paint and effort only to collapse. Painting, if it's to live, must inhabit such spaces. Great riches, say the Sufis, are at the bottom of the ocean. Safety us on the shore.

I’ve had this little beauty for over a year, never opened it though because I was waiting for the right time. I am getting this years #torritgrey this week (37ml) so I finally plucked up the courage to use this one.
