i love that in every alta u read toph is always zuko’s #1 protector bc she doesn’t see him as the evil dude who chased her friends around the world she just sees him as zuko- the awkward teenager who tries so hard to connect with everyone and feels so guilty about literally everything.

The idea of characters from other stories winding up in SVSSS has been stuck in my head for a while but I'm not gonna write abt it lmao so here's what's been rattling around in the ole noggin:
Toph:
Toph would be a genuine menace
Specifically on poor Liu Qingge, who hasn't the slightest clue how he wound up with yet another student
Earthbending should not be possible here. Earthbending is NOT possible here.
Toph invents earthbending here.
In fact, she only gets stronger. Because the cultivation aspects of the world means she's got even more qi and knows more about how to use it beyond earthbending.
She can now use qi itself to "see" (sensing others' qi, using it to sense movement, etc.) Not just earthbending
Lqg wants nothing to do with any more disciples. Especially not ones as annoying as yang yixuan
He gets a gremlin even more annoying than yang yixuan
He lies awake at night, regretting saving her life that one time on a hunt and kickstarting her path of being a Problem
Specifically, he saves her life one night while she's out trying to remaster earthbending, inspiring her to become a cultivator
She runs away from her noble family and their arranged marriage and stifling life that they've planned out for her and heads straight to Cang Qiong's Bai Zhan peak the first chance she gets
Refuses to take no for an answer, thus growing to become lqg's #1 menace
He both blesses and curses the day she was born
Lqg would sooner die than admit she's basically his other baby sister/daughter figure
Will outright refuse to fly on her sword When asked how she'll get around, the earth goddamn MOVES UNDER HER FEET and she causes several earthquake/mole monster sightings with these shenanigans
Is banned from this move
Begins to tunnel underground instead
She could arguably fly on her sword just fine, sensing the qi around her to navigate and shit, but it's harder and definitely uncomfortable and brings back bad memories of that one time in the volcano with Aang and Sokka
Luo Binghe wants her dead
She probably never gets strong enough to 1v1 him and win but she's definitely strong enough to become a genuine challenge
Especially when she reinvents metalbending
Rides for her shizun ong
Would probably fight lbh for lqg's honor after the SQQ corpse situation (he did not ask her to do this)
Aang:
The angel of Qing Jing peak fr
Or that monastery but we don't hear enough about them tbh
Has legitimately no idea how he got here, maybe too scared to question it actually
Like, did he really fuck up and end up getting ripped out of the avatar cycle orrrr????
Decides some things are better left unknown
The only struggle he really has is not being bald anymore
Honestly???? Might still shave his head and just stick to a wig
Would inevitably get caught or ALMOST caught and eventually gets used to growing it out (would probably become the inventor of extensions or wig glue though lmao)
Would make the spoiled qing jing disciples better just by being around them tbh
Star student probably, would be a menace in a cute way
One of the few men allowed on Xian Shu (for visits/messages)
Would probably befriend demons ngl
Loves flying on his sword
Prefers his staff though, and eventually figures out how to make/get someone to make one for him
No one knows how he does the air scooter. They are scared.
No one asks about the tattoos either.
Or how he's controlling all these fucking elements.
He doesn't have an avatar state anymore, but that doesn't seem to stop him from being wildly more dangerous than anyone expected
Possibly unlocks permanent cultivation-blocking? Like sealing off your core
Demons don't take note
Until he learns how to do the same for demonic cores
Exorcist Aang
Possibly becomes a rogue/wandering cultivator
Wandering rogue exorcist Aang????
He's either a god descended upon the earth or a heavenly demon in disguise, according to critics
He thinks it's all silly
Until he meditates too hard and communes with a god or something who tells him they may or may not have bargained to snatch his corner of the avatars soul for a reason
Uh oh
Sokka:
Does not know how he managed to get spiritual energy or cultivate
Actively chooses not to think too much about it
The head disciple of An Ding 😭
Absolutely salty about it
Shang Qinghua is endlessly grateful though
Does not know what to make of the long hair thing; probably tries to keep his hair in a half-pony still, as an ode to the water tribe
I've seen some fics where Qiong Ding is headcannoned as the bureaucratic peak; in this case, he might be able to sweet talk his way in if fate and Yue Qingyuan is kind enough
Either way he's grateful he gets to do sword stuff again
Especially now that he can FLY on them?!
He hasn't completely forgotten his skills, so he's got a whole different style no one's seen before and it's Weirdly Good Actually
He finally works his cultivation up enough to get his personal sword
Then he finally gets to summon his and he cries
It's space sword
No one knows what the fuck to make of this weird ass sword but he doesn't care, it's his and he loves it
Known as the best ever manager of An Ding peak
Katara:
Would have one (1) argument with her brother and march up to Xian Shu
Frequent visitor of Qing Jing and Qian Cao
Mu Qingfang mourns every day that she didn't choose the medicine peak
Katara maintains that she's too ready to beat some ass to ever be a full doctor and vow to do no harm
Never quite learns to be comfy with a sword but can still handle her own
During the demon invasion on Cang Qiong (assuming she's there at the time), she bloodbends Hualing right off the mountain
The demons do NOT stick around
The cultivators are too scared to ask her what the fuck that was but they're nicer to her than before
The xian shu peak gains a fearsome reputation of possibly teaching blood magic
No One gets how she does the waterbending stuff. Outsiders assume it's some Xian Shu ancient secret technique. Or she's related to Mobei Jun. Real members know Kataras just Like This.
Keeps the hair loopies. No matter what people say.
Wears a blue necklace similar to her mother's heirloom; a gift from her shizun probably
Genuinely enjoys the sisterhood on Xian Shu. It reminds her of the better days of her home, before the southern raiders came back
Zuko:
Could've chosen from several peaks, but chooses Bai Zhan
Something about the bamboo on Qing Jing reminds him of his uncle though, so he likes to visit. But not for too long. It hurts.
Isn't really bothered by the long hair thing; while cutting hair isn't forbidden in the fire nation, long hair is common practice, especially for nobles
Keeps the standard topknot until Toph calls it ugly
And then he remembers toph cannot see his topknot
Starts doing ponytails anyway
Also a star student of Bai Zhan, especially after he busts out the firebending forms
Yet another nuisance for poor lqg
He and Toph are the only two that can keep up with each other
Known as the Twin Stars of Bai Zhan
Aka the Twin Headaches of Liu Qingge
Has a small red birthmark near his eye, on the side that used to be burned
The fact that there isn't a massive burn is mildly uncomfortable to him at first. Doesn't feel like himself
Again, No One knows how all these kids with weird qi abilities are coming from
They're beginning to suspect they're all part demon
Neither he nor Toph ever defeat the demon heritage allegations
Especially not with the way they fight. And allegedly have a Past that no one else knows about
Would also fight Binghe for his Shizuns honor
Weirdly chill for Bai Zhan actually
Has probably made leaps and bounds from his avatar hunting days already
Most expect him to have gone to a quieter peak, it's baffling
Until he beats the shit outta somebody
And then goes back to being gentle and chill and forgiving
He wonders if uncle Iroh is watching over him here too
He can only hope his uncle is still proud of him, wherever he might be
Lqg isn't his uncle, but he's still a kind presence that Zuko looks up to a little, even if the guy is a little too punchy
Thus takes it upon himself to ride or die for him
One of the few dual wielders around
His curved blades are also a source of curiosity for the others
But he's good with them so no one complains
In a bingliushen situation, Zuko, Toph, and YYX are feral protective gremlins that somehow make things better AND worse for the development of the bingliushen courtship process lmao
I'll probably make more at some point but that's all for now. If someone wants to make a fic of these PLEASE let me know, link me I'm desperate

More Than Meets The Eye - 1
This was not how (Y/N) pictured her day to go, not in a million years would she think that her, her little sister, and an almost total stranger would be suspended in metal cages above the smooth, rock platform while they waited for her parents to arrive with the ransom money. She let out a huff, blowing the hair out of her face as she looked through the small windows, bars obstructing her view from her little sister.
“Oh, you just had to get involved in the earth bending tournament didn’t you?” She gave her sister a snide remark with a pointed look into her sister's direction. Now, to be fair, (Y/N) had originally encouraged her little sister to get out of the house, unbeknownst to their helicopter parents, and prove to herself that she wasn’t a scared, helpless little girl that couldn’t hold her own, But, she truly hadn’t expected Toph make it as far as she did in the Earth Rumble Arena. (Y/N) should’ve expected it in all honesty, she knew there was more than meets the eye with her, so to speak, Toph had proven that to her from the minute she could walk.
“Don’t blame me! It’s Twinkle Toes over here that got us into the mess.” Toph accused the stranger dangling in the metal cage next to her. “We wouldn’t be in this mess if he just let me pummel him like the rest of these losers.” There she goes again, (Y/N) sighed, if their kidnappers weren’t already annoyed at the trio, they were now. Toph had already threatened to wipe the grin off of the guy she called Xin Fu’s face.
“Here’s your money!” A new voice entered the conversation from below them, “Now let them go.” (Y/N) tried to take a look at where the voice had come from but the cage was angled to where he was just out of view. Xin Fu must’ve gestured for her and Toph to be released from their imprisonment as she felt the cage suspend from where she had previously been in the air. A relieved sigh escaped as she composed herself as she got out of the metal box, hastily walking towards where her father and earth bending teacher had been, along with the two siblings she had greeted at the house.
“Dad!” She threw her arms around him, a quick hug as he scanned to make sure she was alright but was swiftly discarded so he could dote on her little sister, his hand going to the back her neck, guiding her out of the arena while Xin Fu held the avatar up, announcing his plans to turn him into the Fire Nation. (Y/N)’s brows held worry in them as she walked away with her family, hoping that the little trio would be alright, she would help them fight if she could but her earth bending was nowhere near as good as Toph’s, plus her dad would freak out if anything happened to her or Toph. The four of them had almost made it to the exit when Katara approached them.
“Toph, there’s too many of them.” She pleaded, “We need an earth bender. We need you!” Her words had caused their dad to stop and turn.
“My daughter is blind! She is blind and tiny and helpless and fragile!” He exclaimed as (Y/N) threw him a look, If only he knew what (Y/N) knew. “She cannot help you, and my other daughter can’t either!” Toph snatched her hand away from their fathers, determination written across her face.
“Yes, I can.” Toph stated, walking towards them as she left their father with a confused and almost broken hearted look on his face. (Y/N) bit her lip, unsure of what he would think but hey, he’ll already be upset with Toph so what’s the point in trying to keep the peace.
“Dad, just-” (Y/N) started, looking up at him as she too started to back away to where she was temporarily held captive. “Toph will be okay.” She knew this offered little to no comfort for her dad but she still guided him and Master Yu to the bottom seats in the arena. (Y/N) watched as Toph created a wall, blocking the others from leaving with the avatar.
“Let him go! I’ve beaten you all before and I’ll do it again!” Toph boasted the warning as their father clung to (Y/N)’s hand, scared of what might happen to his precious baby.
“The Boulder takes issue with that comment.” One of the guys stated as another had thrown the metal cage away from them causing groans to come from the box. Katara and Sokka had started to make their way to the opposing side, also seemingly preparing for the fight but Toph held her hands out, blocking them from going further.
“Wait,” She said, the pro benders running towards them as she turned her head back to the three others by her side. “They’re mine.” She claimed, her voice growled almost causing (Y/N) to do a double take at how serious she had become in a matter of seconds.(Y/N) felt the floor of the arena practically tremble as she watched her sister gearing up to knock the opponents back, God, she was going to have to get lessons from her little sister, Master Yu was not nearly as good as Toph! (Y/N) tried hard to keep her mouth from dropping as the earth bender in Fire Nation clothing came flying down to just below the arena seats, a huge impact being made on the rock. It was amazing watching her little sister one piece each and every one of the opponents, it seemed like every other second a new guy was replacing the Fire Nation guy’s place. Their dad, however, was not as impressed as she could feel him trembling in fear next to her, her wrist being squeezed every time someone’s presence was made clear in the floating dust everywhere.
“I never knew! Your daughter’s amazing!” Master Yu proclaimed to their father, causing (Y/N) to cringe at how that put their dad even more on edge. Soon, it was just Toph and Xin Fu in the arena, (Y/N)’s freehand grabbing at her tunic in slight worry, watching with intense eyes. Toph had spit, which was almost the tipping point for (Y/N)’s dad as he gasped. The fight was over between them quickly, Xin Fu ending up in the bleachers next to her, causing her to practically jump into her dads lap for safety. “She’s the greatest earth bender I’ve ever seen!”
The walk back to their house compound was almost silent, (Y/N) holding Toph’s hand as she stared at the back of their dads head, worrying just what would happen when they were finally behind closed doors. She was not really in the mood to get yelled at or talked down to by their parents but it seemed that it was imminent, knowing her dad, (Y/N) was probably going to lose what freedom she had, though she knew it would be worse for Toph. Their parents had always favored Toph in the sense that she needed more protection, as soon as their learned that their youngest daughter was blind, they turned whatever attention they had for (Y/N) towards Toph. (Y/N) wasn’t upset at this, it gave her a little more freedom to roam outside their gates but she knew that Toph hated being coddled by their parents.
“What do you think he’s going to say?” (Y/N) asked softly, looking down towards her sister as they walked.
“I don’t know honestly, I’m just hoping I proved myself to him that I’m not so small and helpless. Maybe mom would understand a little bit more.” Toph’s lip curled at the corner, showing she was hopeful that their talk would allow Toph to have more experiences beyond their gates. (Y/N) just stayed silent, she knew her parents were not going to be as accepting as Toph had hoped. (Y/N) had witnessed just how fast they turned their attention from her to Toph when they were younger, Toph was their baby, Spirits forbid anything happen to her.
“Maybe,” (Y/N) answered, not wanting to crush Toph’s enthusiasm. “For the sake of keeping you happy, they might allow you this.” She gave Toph’s hand a squeeze whilst they entered the house.
Aang, Sokka, and Katara sat on a bench behind Toph and (Y/N) as they stood in front of their parents, Toph keeping her head down low as she spoke.
“Dad, I know it’s probably hard for you to see me this way. But the obedient, helpless little blind girl that you think I am just isn’t me. I love fighting, I love being an earthbender. And I’m really, really good at it!” She said with a smile, turning her head towards (Y/N). (Y/N) took a breath in as she continued. “I know I’ve kept my life a secret from you, but you were keeping me a secret from the whole world. You were doing it to protect me, but I’m twelve years old and I’ve never had a real friend besides (Y/N).” Toph took a shaky breath. “So now that you see me for who I really am, I hope this doesn’t change the way you feel about me.” (Y/N) watched as her dad opened his mouth to speak but (Y/N) was quick to stop him once she saw the look on his face.
“Toph proved that she could handle her own just fine, you saw it first hand dad. I know that you’re scared for her and that she’s young but she’s allowed to live a life beyond what you’ve given her.” (Y/N) rushed out, her eyes staring into her dads, though it seemed her statement only made it worse. Their dad had held up his hand, quick to stop (Y/N) from continuing to speak as he turned his gaze towards Toph.
“Of course it doesn’t change the way I feel about you, Toph.” He began, (Y/N) could feel Toph perk up from beside her, though she wished Toph could only see how stern their father looked before she got her hopes up. “It’s made me realize something.”
“It has?” Toph asked, a smile playing at her lips as she lifted her head towards him.
“Yes, I’ve let you and your sister have far too much freedom.” There it was, the hammer slamming down to bring Toph back to reality. “From now on, you’ll be cared for and guarded twenty-four hours a day.”
“But dad-” Toph began to protest.
“And (Y/N), you will no longer be permitted to leave these walls. You will both remain where a guard can see you at all times or so help me.” (Y/N)s brows furrowed as she looked towards their mother only to see her nodding in agreement.
“We are doing this for your own good.” Their mother stated from her seat, eyes boring into (Y/N), clearly disappointed in how she had let her younger sister stir this much trouble up for them.
“Please escort the Avatar and his friends out. They are no longer welcome here.” (Y/N) heard them get up from behind her, though she had turned her attention to Toph, a hand going around her shoulder in efforts to comfort her as best as she could in front of their parents.
“I’m sorry, Toph.” Aang had said, his head turned towards the sisters as he exited.
“I’m sorry too, goodbye Aang.” Toph’s voice sounded so broken and out of character it made (Y/N)s heart clench for her little sister.
“C’mon Toph, let’s get you to your room.” (Y/N) had started to guide Toph towards the wing where their bedrooms resided, a glare thrown over her shoulder at her parents. Once they were out of earshot, she let go. “Go make a pack full of clothes and whatever else you think you might need, I’m not going to let this chance slip by for you.” She told Toph, peering down at her.
“What do you mean (Y/N)?” She questioned, stopping to look up at her sister.
“You and me, we’re getting out of here. I’m not going to let them keep you in here for the rest of your life. We’re going to get as far away from here as we can.” (Y/N) was determined, her eyes sharp as she moved to go to her own room to make a pack for herself.
“You’re the best big sister ever.” Toph grinned as she quickly took to her own room.
They all but sprinted to catch up where they saw Aang lead Sokka and Katara, quick to make sure they weren’t getting left behind. (Y/N) watched as she saw Aang getting in position to take off on his sky bison.
“Wait!” She cried out, panting as they made it up to the hill.
“Toph! What are you doing here?” Aang questioned as he stared down at them.
“Our dad changed his mind.” (Y/N) was quick to answer, though they all knew it wasn’t a believable lie.
“He said we were free to travel to the world.” Toph added on as they all looked down at the pair.
“Well we’d better get out of here before your dad changes his mind again.” Sokka welcomed the duo. (Y/N) was quick to throw her and Toph’s packs into the saddle before grabbing at the sky bison's fur to make her way into it.
“Well, you’re going to be a great teacher Toph!” Aang stated with a smile.
“Speaking of which, I wanna show you something!” Aang had floated down to where Toph was before being sent back up into the air by Toph. (Y/N) snickered at the interaction as she threw her leg over the saddle and collapsed into it, watching down with proud eyes at her little sister. “Now we’re even.” Toph declared. “And I’ll take the belt back.” She stuck her hand out towards Sokka in anticipation only to let out a sharp ‘ow’ as the metal belt thunked her on the head.
“Sorry.” Sokka muttered as she slowly got back up and made her way into the bison’s saddle as well.
“Dude, my sister is blind so please be a little more careful.” (Y/N) teased as she helped pull Toph the rest of the way in. They were quick to take off after that, (Y/N) and Toph staring down over the edge of the saddle as their home became smaller in view, (Y/N)’s hand rubbing Toph’s shoulder. “They’ll be okay, you know. They’ll get over it eventually.” (Y/N) offered to Toph. “We’ll be halfway around the world as they try to think of punishments worse than being kept there forever.”
“I know, I’m just worried they’re going to be broken-hearted. I mean you leaving is one thing, but me? I’m clearly the favorite so I don’t know how they’ll cope with my loss.” Toph snickered as (Y/N) rolled her eyes and lightly pinched Toph’s shoulder.  Yeah, this was not how (Y/N) pictured today would go.

"bitter work" is such an iconic episode. toph and katara debate the merits of various teaching methods when your student is a gifted kid who has heretofore never struggled to grasp a concept. iroh expresses a desire to pulverize his fourteen year old niece. sokka and zuko bargain with god.
