Oooo, what a great question, thank you. Frankly... I have no idea. For a long time, my guess was the good ol' "was extremely poor/homeless and football is how he earns his money and respect and place in the world and he has nothing else", which, of course, turned out to be Lorenzo's backstory to a T.

If that's not the case, it's honestly probably something even more tragic. It's curious to think about where the obsessive need to prove his worth comes from. This is nothing but a guess, but it might have something to do with an abusive parent/coach/or any other sort of parental figure. That would, I suppose, explain the "noose tightening around his neck" thing that's been referenced multiple times, and also the way fucked up he treats Ness - maybe that's a behavior he learned from someone else who did it to him first. And maybe he wants to prove his worth to this person. Maybe as a sort of "Fuck you, look at how good I am and what I've achieved".

I think that not only are they gonna make his backstory sad because that would explain a lot about him, but also to make him seem more likable to encourage people to feel a certain degree of sympathy for him. He's an unlikeable douchebag, so they'll probably pull the typical shonen move of giving him a sad backstory to get people to like him more. You know how it goes.

Honestly? I actually low-key hope there's nothing that tragic about his life and he's just an obsessive, mean, self-centered motherfucker through and through for no reason. Let him be evil for evil's sake.
