Hi! I was just wondering who's your favorite phantom actor?
Can be from any Poto play, or movie, or anything really.
I'm really curious!
This and similar questions have been popping up so much for me in the last week lol
I like to be extremely specific so I will give you a few of my favourites
I have been meaning to re-examine my favourites for a while now
So my favourite overall, my number one, my blorbo, the phantom closest to my heart is always going to be Gerard Butler. Say what you want about his singing, but ain't no other phantom ever done Pleading Eyes (tm) like that man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For stage Phantoms the one who has a hold on my mind that just will not let go is Tim Martin Gleason. I love a tall phantom. I love that in the title song he does not order Christine to sing for him, he asks her. He conveys, with his intonation, that he asks for the honour of having her sing for him. I love how expressive he is. This man made so many choices.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vocally I think the best singer that has ever played the phantom is John Owen Jones. But I think my favourite phantom Vocally is Tomas Ambt Kofod, because he--more than ANY other Phantom I have heard, sounds like Erik. His voice is remarkable in its smoothness and delicacy, but also very powerful.
He's also so sensual and gentle. He loves to administer loving touches and caresses to his Christine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His final lair is also devastating
The Phantom actor I think I respect most is Ethan Freeman. This man has such a dedication to this character and to the book specifically. He refused to read Phantom by Susan Kay because he didn't want an apocryphal version of the character to influence his interpretation, which he specified modeled off of Leroux's Erik, adding touches pulled directly from the novel such as kissing (or almost kissing) the hem of Christine's robe during "Stranger Than You Dreamt It", as Erik kisses the hem of her dress in the book.
Seen here in the West End in 1995 with Jill Washington:
Tumblr media
And here, in Essen, 11 years later with Anne Görner:
Tumblr media
It seems that over time he evolved this moment to the point that he appears to abandon the thought before he brings it close to his lips--probably thinking he's not even worthy of touching her vestments.
He's got an almost faerie-goblin quality to his interpretation. Like he's just scuttled out of the Black Forest. He also leans into the idea of Erik-as-Magician
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's not afraid to be sensual either, though.
Tumblr media
I think the most emotional phantom is Earl Carpenter. One of the first full boots I ever watched was Earl Carpenter with Rachel Barrel. His Music of the Night changed my brain chemistry forever. The gentleness! The vulnerability! The vacillation between confidence and fragility!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way he would jostle Christine a little when he caught her, his face a picture of panicked concern!
Tumblr media
Though I think his interpretation of Erik as (for want of a better word) asexual is a little wacky (considering the text), it strangely works in favour of Erik's particular brand of sensuality, and it paired particularly well with Rachel's timid and apprehensive interpretation of Christine (which I generally dislike--here, though). And his singing has only improved with maturity. The raw emotion of his All I Ask of You (Rooftop Reprise) in his 2023 run is shattering. Absolutely shattering.
My favourite feral Phantom is without a doubt Scott Davies. If you ever want to see the most unhinged "Let these freaks be together" e/c show you've ever seen you have GOT to watch Scott Davies with Meredith Braun. Ethan Freeman's got the Goblin King energy and Anthony Crivello has the Sewer Gremlin vibe, but if you ever want a Phantom with a real primal streak, you can do no better than long-standing West End understudy Scott Davies:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This guy tackled the role with a ferocity and an audacity that you don't generally find outside of Russian productions.
His Phantom hands? Oh Lordy!
Tumblr media
And the best part is that Meredith's Christine was picking up EVERYTHING he was laying down. Her Christine is just as mad, just as feral, just as unhinged. And especially paired with such a hearty goodfellow Raoul as Matthew Cammelle--Raoul would have done well to gtfo of there. He was NOT prepared to handle this lmao.
And then there's Ted Keegan. Who for me will always be the Phantom that got away. If I had just done a little more research before--just three months into my poto obsession--booking my tickets to see phantom before it closed on Broadway, I might have had the transcendent experience of seeing Ted Keegan live. As it was, I had no idea he was even still playing the phantom, and wound up with Ben Crawford instead.
And I would be remiss if I finished this list without naming Thomas James O'Leary. Like Ethan Freeman, O'Leary leans into Erik's ghostly persona, with a magician's touch. I think he took a lot of inspiration from Lon Chaney's Phantom (note the position of his hands here).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His "Sing for me~" is one of my all time favourite line readings and got a very embarrassing reaction out of me when I first heard it.
And then, as if that wasn't enough, there was the moan.

I don't know if you've answered this question before, but do you have favorite Phantom/Christine pairings?
I have answered it before, but not too recently, so maybe it's time to make a big ole updated masterpost of all my favorites as of now!
Keep in mind that if a name isn't on here, it doesn't mean they're not a favorite or whatever, it might just mean I never saw them with a Phantom or Christine I particularly liked (e.g. Gina Beck is an all-time favorite but she's not on here because I never really saw her opposite a Phantom I also really enjoyed) or I preferred a slightly different pairing (e.g. I really liked Franc D'Ambrosio with Lisa Vroman but I slightly preferred the latter with Brad Little). And there may be one or two where I could not decide at all (e.g. do I prefer Kelly Mathieson with David Thaxton or Josh Piterman? I can't tell!). Anyway, here they are:
Michael Crawford/Sarah Brightman - The OG cast. It can't be helped, they both had such unique takes on the role and it makes them one of the most memorable pairings for me.
Dave Willetts/Jan Hartley Morris - His rougher take on the mold that Crawford left vs. Jan Hartley Morris's old-school, classical Christine is a winner.
Mikael Samuelson/Elisabeth Berg - I love Samuelson's slightly harsher vocals compared to Berg's operatic tones.
Alexander Goebel/Luzia Nistler - Goebel is eerie, ghostly, and unhinged at the end; Nistler has a lovely classical voice and a scared, slightly naive take on her Christine. It fits well.
Davis Gaines/Tracy Shayne - Gaines is commanding, sensual, elegant; Shayne is innocent but with a touch of maturity that brings a certain uniqueness to the role.
Saulo Vasconcelos/Irasema Terrazas - Hands! I think both were allowed a lot of freedom in the role and it's great.
Hans Peter Janssens/Ineke van Klinken - Janssens is both very nuts and very sad while van Klinken is a reserved yet steely-willed Christine who is more than a match for him.
Ian Jon Bourg/Alison Kelly - Bourg is good with so many Christines, but I loved Alison Kelly's feistiness.
Michael Nicholson/Olivia Safe - Just a fascinating pairing, and they were both understudies!
Yoon Young Seok/Hye Kyoung Lee - It didn't matter that both were speaking Korean, they were so emotional that I felt like I understood every aspect of their performance.
Brad Little/Lisa Vroman - Kind of mentioned above, but I love how well these two act together.
Hugh Panaro/Julie Hanson - Hugh Panaro is a sarcastic jokester of a man and it makes you really feel for Julie Hanson's child-like Christine at the end of the show.
Gary Mauer/Elizabeth Southard - A real-life married E/C couple brings all the chemistry!
Earl Carpenter/Rachel Barrell - Barrell is also really good with JOJ, and more spirited around him, but I love Earl Carpenter more.
John Cudia/Jennifer Hope Wills - Oh the sparks these two brought to the role! Cudia was scary and dominating but JHW was absolutely able to hold her own against him.
Simon Pryce/Julie Goodwin - The voices of these two!
Marcus Lovett/Anna O'Byrne - Leroux-accuracy heaven.
Jeremy Stolle/Samantha Hill - Again, I've seen these two give fantastic performances with multiple performers, but I really do love what they bring to the show together.
Tomas Ambt Kofod/Sibylle Glosted - Very detailed, nuanced performances in a production that was full of it.
Jonathan Roxmouth/Meghan Picerno - There was fire between these two! Roxmouth was intent on bending Christine to his will but Picerno was so fiercely independent that you knew he could never succeed.
Jeon Dong Seok/Son Ji-soo - JDS is a swoon-worthy Phantom while SJS brought lovely expressions to the role.
And I'm sure there are many others...

So the Danish dub of Scrooge has Tomas Ambt Kofod as Scrooge.
Me: he's...a REALLY good singer. He has to sing for a living. Not all of Scrooge's voice actors sing (why would you cast them in a musical, but hey, whatevs), but THIS ONE does. He has to. He sings too suspiciously well.
YEAH, HE SURE DOES. HE'S THE DANISH "PHANTOM".
EDIT: So I found a Copenhagen 2018 production, and...yeah, he's really good. ANOTHER EDIT: Go to 12:27 (13:00 is when it's like 'okay, you have to be a professional, that's too smooth'.)

Why did they give Joe a wig though? Is that normal for Phantom?
Most Raouls wear their own hair, unless their hair is not long enough for the standard-ish "swoopy romantic side part" Raoul style. So that means that even though the design and Steve Barton had straight-ish blond hair, there have been ginger/auburn, dark haired, curly-haired, and even touch of grey haired Raouls. Because the majority of the time, they do wear their own hair, but maybe have fake sideburns, although some like Jordan Donica and Tomas Ambt Kofod grow their own. But some Raouls have been bald or balding or had greying hair or I think David Shannon had cornrows at one point 🙄, so the wigs department gave those actors a wig. Joe Griffiths-Brown has a more modern undercut style of hair IRL right now, so that's probably why they gave him a wig.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But for completeness, there have been 6 black Raouls (Liam Tamne, Jordan Donica, Jemal Felix, Callum Francis, Lewis Francis and now Joe Griffiths-Brown) and about half of them have worn wigs.
AFAIK Liam Tamne (London 2014-2015) wore his own hair but I would have to go really digging through his Instagram/Twitter to find pictures of him in his "civilian life" besides that tiny blurry one from almost a decade ago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jordan Donica didn't wear a wig for either his 2016 run (left) or his 2022 run (center and right). Which led to him becoming the first replica Raoul with a ponytail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jemal Felix wore a wig as an understudy from 2021-2022 (first pic was from a dress rehearsal)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in the non replica Australian Sydney Harbor production, Callum Francis and Lewis Francis both wore wigs with a very dramatic side part. But when Lewis Francis continued as an understudy in the Australian restaged tour, he wore his own hair and not a wig.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and i'm not even covering the old raoul wigs that they all wear. i know jordan donica didn't have an old raoul wig that matched his natural texture in his first run, lewis francis did have in the restaged tour, and i've typed all i can about raoul wigs and all i can hear is this song

While I was looking up photos of my wife & I "based" off the Love Never Dies Copenhagen cast (Louise Fribo & Tomas Ambt Kofod), I came across this one which encouraged you to caption it; so I did! If you wish, put YOUR caption in the comments! Our major pet peeves in one post! ~Thomas

Favorite trios/duets?
This is a fun question that got buried in my inbox! I'm so sorry! I'm assuming this is in reference to "Wandering Child"? I've seen and forgotten so, so many versions of the scene and I don't want to go through them all, so here are the ones I remember! I'm probably forgetting some great actors and I'M SORRY.
Trios
Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman & Steve Barton. Just...the best. One of my favorite parts of the OLC recording.
Ted Keegan, Emilie Kouatchou & John Riddle. I just have so many FEELINGS about them. Easily one of the best trios I've seen.
John Owen-Jones, Celia Graham & Robert Finlayson. Their voices together are just HNNNNG, and Finlayson brings it despite being alongside two vocal powerhouses.
Tomas Ambt Kofod, Sibylle Glosted & Christian Lund. No surprises here—one of the best trios, period.
Josh Piterman, Kelly Mathieson & Alistair So. aaaa they all sound SO GOOD here! Also Kelly is my fave so I'm biased.
Duets
Saulo Vasconcelos & Irasema Terrazas. They have such beautiful, mature voices that complement each other (whereas Raoul's...doesn't quite fit).
Hugh Panaro & Julie Hanson. I think this is more the case with the 2003 bootleg than the 2005 one, but they have a special sort of chemistry.
Franc D'Ambrosio & Lisa Vroman. Just absolute stars, both of them.
Peter Jöback & Elizabeth Welch. Usually I notice the absence of Raoul's vocals in "Wandering Child," but these two made me forget.
Gary Mauer & Elizabeth Southard. They're married, and you can feel it.
Andrey Schkoldychenko & Elena Bahtiyarova. hnnng pretty

Hi! Do you have any actor who plays Raoul in last years what would you like him to play the phantom?
Excuse my english, it's my second language
I made a list here some years ago and it hasn't changed much. I might add, say, John Riddle and Christian Lund to it, I suppose. Jordan Donica is probably still my top choice, though I also adore his Raoul and would be quite happy if he stuck to that role.
I think it's also been an interesting few years in that a lot of very strong Raouls have become Phantoms: I'm thinking of Tomas Ambt Kofod, Nadim Naaman, and Anton Zetterholm, all of whom were excellent Raouls who went on to become Phantoms.

The Copenhagen production’s final curtain call today. Some cute/cool moments: when Tomas comes out he hugs John, and takes off his mask before he bows. Also, the cast takes 2 extra sets of bows! Will miss them so much!
