Thoughts on Husk! Spoilers for Episode 5 of Hazbin Hotel

So like, we can all agree that Husk is super perceptive right? Dude literally goes on a rant about how everyone bitches to the bartender before summarizing everyone’s problems in front of them. We also know that Husk knows Alastor. Has known him for a long ass time, to the point he (and Nifty) are pretty familiar with Alastor’s old friends/friendly acquaintances.

And the reason I’m bringing all this up is because I wanna analyze that scene in episode 5, where Husk confronts Alastor about Mimzy, and more importantly why.

Because Alastor’s been friends with Mimzy for a long time, he’s very familiar with her pattern/routine of pissing some demon off and then running to him for help. Husk knows this too, and he knows Alastor knows. So why bring it up at all? Alastor is strong, sure his reputation had taken a hit with his 7 year absence, but it’s very unlikely any kinda trouble Mimzy brings will be more trouble than Alastor can handle.

But Husk brings it up anyways, goes outta his way to talk to Alastor about it, and when Alastor dismisses his concerns, starts pushing that this is something Alastor needs to take more seriously.

So the question is, why? Well I think it’s because Husk knows Alastor’s hands are tied, that he has MUCH greater stakes in the hotel than Alastor’s bothered to let on. And that he’s trying to warn Alastor that he needs to be more careful, that he can’t just expect things to go the way they always did back in the good old days, that the times have changed. He’s perceptive enough to notice that Alastor isn’t acting completely on his own will, that someone’s got him on a leash. (Which I don’t believe is something Alastor would ever willingly divulge.) And he’s frustrated that Alastor doesn’t seem to be taking whatever job he’s supposed to do to protect the hotel seriously.

Because letting Mimzy in is an unnecessary risk, especially when Alastor’s reputation alone may not be enough of a deterrent.

Husk is concerned about whatever situation Alastor’s landed himself in. So, Husk pushes, keeps trying to get Alastor to recognize the gravity of the situation. And Alastor keeps dodging his questions, keeps trying to end and leave the conversation before it touches on topics he REALLY doesn’t want to think much less talk about.

And then Husk steps on the proverbial landmine and Alastor snaps.

In the end, Alastor does take Husk’s advice and tells Mimzy to leave. Husk’s point about people not being so scared of him anymore, that his reputation alone won’t keep the hotel safe, is proved to be true with the loan sharks attack, and Alastor sees that. And he agrees.

Tldr; Husk knows Alastor’s landed himself in some deep shit, and is worried Alastor’s not taking it seriously. Alastor gets uncomfortably reminded that he doesn’t have everything as in control as he’d like to believe. And whatever stakes Alastor has in the hotel is high enough that he can’t risk brining any kinda trouble to it like Mimzy did.

I saw people doing a warrior cats unpopular opinion thing, and I thought about mine and like

My (maybe?) unpopular opinion is that A Shadow in RiverClan would have been better suited as a Mistyfoot-centric book.

The story makes Feathertail wildly out of character with who she is in The New Prophecy, and I feel like all the story beats would work just as well with Mistyfoot struggling as deputy to connect with her clanmates. It's the struggle between knowing your clan would have left you for dead in that hole, but knowing just as well that your mother's clan was never happy with you in it. Where do you belong? How do you cope?

How do you cope knowing that your friend was the lover of the dictator that ordered the death of your brother? The man who hated you for the crime of being your mother's shadow. How can you listen to her say that she misses him? You don't cope. You look at Hawkpaw and Mothpaw in a new light. They're a shadow of their father and don't even know it.

You're now in the pawsteps of the others around you. You look at them, and you see their traitorous father. Your clanmates look at you and see your mother, who was once the enemy of RiverClan. Legacy is inescapable, but you try to look past it. You regret knowing everything you do. You wish that the secrets would have just stayed buried.

It means a lot more when Leopardstar dies for you. It's not just a leader dying for her clanmate - it's what any leader should do. It's a leader dying for her deputy. It's a leader who understands that she should have died nine times over for Stonefur, but she didn't, and now all she can do is lay her life down for you. Things are not always going to be good between you both. But for now the two of you understand one another. There will not be another Bonehill, execution, or death.

Y'all

I have been trying to get a new job and this one place - a confectionery - is my top pick. I have confection experience and this place has antique candy and chocolate molds and equipment from 1911 and UGH it's so lovely and the two interviews I did (one a tour, the other a working interview) were so lovely.

Anywho, after waiting for the owners to get back from holiday, I finally got a response and basically, due to their ongoing changes and my seasonal job in October, they essentially said that I could start in November.

I loath my current job and wish I could quit tomorrow but my goodness this is such a good place, I swear. It's not a chain. It's well established. The staff kept saying that they've been working there for X amount of months/years and waiting for "something to happen" but it never does! It's actually just a lovely environment.

And in the email, they asked if I would reach out to them first if I felt the need to search for other jobs due to the wait time, and - I don't know - I've just never felt so valued by a job before?? And it's not retail or just working in a kitchen, it's a TRADE! It's a CRAFT! They churn their chocolate for ages and can only make some products on certain days because they're super sensitive to humidity and UGH it's so pretty and seems super chill. It was a full house when I toured and everyone was just vibing making candy and I am sooo hopeful for this.

And the fact that they want to hold a spot for me two months out? (They said they would have hours for me in October but want to make sure they can provide full time hours so suggested to start after my seasonal job ends). The way they interacted with me at the interview? The way they prioritize quality over speed? The way they seem to want me specifically because of my experience?

Idk it feels like this is what jobs are supposed to be. I didn't go to college. I just had a past job, got promoted, got experience, and now am applying that to a new and better place. It feels like how apprentices used to work (in fact one of their kitchen managers knew nothing about candy when she first started but got promoted over time). And it's work that I will enjoy!

I hate that I have to keep my current job for another month or two, but man, saying "sorry we can't hire you rn because we have a lot of stuff going on but pls come back in two months we really want you" - that feels good
