mountain goats fans are so fucking funny theyll be like "my favorite goats song is Going to Yugoslavia" and on the wiki page for that song John Darnielle is quoted as saying "I wrote this as a joke for my friend Evan back in 1996". and the song in question is like four lines total with no discernible plot or characters anmd a chorus of "the air was filled with cormorants, la la la"

i've thought about this a lot and if i had to explain recorded sound to a ghost or a time traveler or an alien i would play them the recording of california song from this tmg show. the quiet simplicity. the person in the audience who shouts "i love you". the way after two lines, john leaves his mic and all you hear is the crowd, but it's small enough that you can pick out individual voices. the person with high voice who hits every note and you can hear their smile. the way the quiet of the first verse turns into a emphatic chant of "i've got joy, joy, joy in my soul tonight". the guy who sings the song the regular way while the rest of the crowd holds a note, and ends up being the only person singing in the audience for a moment. the way the john and the crowd keep singing "you really got a hold on me" until it's just peter's bass and everyone snapping along. the little improvised lines john sings before he says "thank you very much" and the crowd erupts. humanity at its absolute finest for real

#this whole show by the way is insane #he plays the entirety of transmissions to horace and then maybe probably the best encore i've ever come across #jenny. you were cool. color in your cheeks. best ever death metal band out of denton. and then of course this #truly a religious experience #the mountain goats #tmg

the best piece of advice i can give to any new mountain goats fan is that sometimes john will just get you. sometimes you will hear a lyric and the only appropriate response will be "come on now john. don't do that to me." and then you'll need a couple minutes to sit and think about it. this is a normal reaction and we all go through it many times i promise

the mountain goats are for the middle aged people searching for some deeper purpose to guide them through that dark well of quiet lingering inner turmoil. the mountain goats are for the teenagers told by their parents that they're disgraces to the name of god. the mountain goats are for long afternoons behind motels looking at dirty pools and orange skies and hoping for hope. the mountain goats are for seeing the dead mouse you've been left by some loving creature. the mountain goats are for sitting in the old chairs that have been in the attic for years. the mountain goats are for sharing a late-night campfire with someone that you've grown to love after a very long time. the mountain goats are for the people who have lost, lost, and lost again, but who keep somehow finding things along the way. the mountain goats are for dusty radios and crisply clean cd players. the mountain goats are for hope and sorrow and all of the quiet moments in between.

the fact that john darnielle regularly speaks about how he feels like some sort of pastor on stage makes it so beautiful that his concerts feel SO spiritually impactful. i'm a proud member of the Church of the Mountain Goats
