tentatively putting my thoughts into the tag. for context i am an anime-only watcher but i've been really, really enjoying the mage exam arc and i was definitely a little surprised to find out that this arc has a lot of people frustrated!

one of the strengths of this arc, i think, is seeing how frieren interacts with characters and personalities we've not seen her encounter before. fern and stark are both relatively placid as people; they're generally content to go along with what frieren says.

lawine and kanne are two very strong personalities that frieren initially doesn't know how to deal with at all! they have a whole thing going on and frieren's choice is to. not handle it at all. rather, she spends much of her time quietly observing the two of them until she can speak with each of them individually and figure them out, just a bit. she really struggles to get a grasp on the situation until she does that; it's lawine and kanne who are acting first within their team.

then, secondly -- frieren's plan is so. elf with a lot of time to spare. the impact of the time limit is felt so strongly by every human character on the field; everyone is in such a rush! fern's team are stoked they caught a stille so early. the team that attacks them are desperate to steal it asap. after lawine freezes the lake, the other teams are desperately trying to thaw it, for a quick solution.

frieren, though? frieren's solution takes a shitton of time and involves her essentially meditating by a pond for god knows how many hours. it's such a frieren plan; i feel like only someone with a relationship with time like frieren does would come up with it.

tldr; frieren's capacity to form relationships and understand people and her relationship with time are shown off in a really interesting way wrt the way frieren solves the stille problem.

that, and... it seems a bit silly to say this about a show with a certain character in the title but... i do not feel that frieren is exclusively about frieren. it is certainly a story about her adventures but frieren is by no means the only important character! fern is also there! and stark but hes on vacation. so let's talk about fern.

the one fight scene fern has is so unbelieveably crunchy to me bc we learn so much about the world (now) and about the world (part)/frieren's view on magic from it! the girl she fights has really impressive magic; we know that this is generally considered a time of peace, the demon lord is dead, etc. magic is not necessarily a means to an end. i wonder if this means magic has entered a sort of renaissance? a time period after a period of great upheaval, where social structure is thrown out the window and great advances are made in technology, science - and maybe magic!

the way fern uses magic is very indicative of how frieren feels about magic. fern says (that frieren said) that "this is enough to defeat mages of this era", which is so interesting to me bc yes, ofc, fern does win! with her simple magic and full auto fire. but does that automatically mean fern is a better mage? it's complicated...

you hear a lot about the different philosophies of people who use magic in these episodes, and what i'm really interested in seeing is mr war guy meet frieren, bc i think they'd be the most interesting contrast -- a warrior of the past, and a warrior of today.

specifically bc -- frieren is basically a custom-designed warrior. the way she can mask her mana is very specifically designed to be able to weaponised against demons, flamme did that to her very purposefully. the way she's trained fern is also indicative of that; fern's immense firepower and stamina being "enough to defeat mages of this era" without being flashy so to speak indicate, at least to me, that this sort of thing was common in frieren's time! but this is a type of magic very specifically made for battle against a very specific enemy.

no wonder frieren likes collecting weird spells so much... i wonder if she's had much time at all in the past to play around with magic for the sake of anything but fighting and training to fight?

What if. Dib n Dexter meet

I've thought about this actually- fun fact! they share a japanese voice actor :) anyways though, this is kind of a tough question to answer because there's both things they strongly agree on and strongly disagree on. theyre both obviously skilled in math and science, but that isn't what dib is really into fully. he incorporates it into his paranormal studies but it's not his main thing like his father. he'd get bored of the conversation pretty fast. given his nature, he'd obviously bring up the fact that he's a self proclaimed paranormal investigator and that there's an alien in his class.

with that in mind, i think dexter would instantly take his word for it, as he's interacted with aliens before. but on the paranormal aspect, i think he'd be one of many to call him crazy, and given his tendency to be a bit of an Asshole, he'd probably tease him for it too. (despite the fact that there's an episode in which they literally cast spells and shit?? idk man i got this from the comics) he'd also probably nitpick his wording on lumping together the paranormal and aliens.

maybe dexter would get along better with dib's dad, professor membrane?

tldr, i think there's some things they could both get along about and also butt heads about. overall though i dont think pairing them up together would be a good idea as they'd probably start fighting each other over things lol

Red Hood Characterization

This is really long so I'm putting a cut here, I've been thinking about Jason Todd's character motivations and the question of whether or not his actions are based in a Moral Code (I don't think so, not to say he's without any morality) and I talk about that in more depth here.

I saw someone say on here that Titans: Beast World: Gotham City was some of the best Jason Todd internal writing they'd seen in a while, and I've been a Red Hood fan for 8 years or so now? pretty much since I read comics for the first time, so I went and checked out and I thought it was good! The way the person I saw talking about it as if it was rare and unusual made me wonder though, because as well-written as i thought his stances on crime were, there wasn't really anything in it that went against the way I conceptualize Jason?

This kinda plays into a larger question I've been thinking about for a while with Jason though, which is that, do people think that the killing is part of a fundamental worldview that motivates him a la batman, and that worldview is the reason he does the things he does?? Because 8 years ago i was a middle schooler engaging with fiction on the level that a middle schooler does, so I simply did not put much thought into it beyond "poor guy :(" but ever since I actually started trying to understand consistent characterization, I don't really see Jason as someone who's motivated by a moral code in his actions the way batman or superman is!

tbh my personal read is that he's a very socially-motivated guy, his actions from resurrection to his Joker-Batman ultimatum in utrh always seemed to me like every choice made leading up to his identity reveal was either a. to give him the leverage and skill necessary to pull off his identity reveal successfully, or b. to twist the knife that little bit more when he does let Bruce find out who he is. Like iirc there's a Judd Winick tweet like "yeah tldr he chose Red Hood as his identity because it's the lowest blow he could think of." And I think that's awesome, I think character motivations rooted so deeply in character's relationships and emotions are really fun to read! I also think it's where the stagnation/flatness of his character comes from in certain comics, because if his main motivation is one event in one relationship that passes, and he is not particularly attached to anything in his life or the world by the time that comes to pass, it's a little harder to come up with a direction to go with the character after that, because there isn't much of a direction that aligns with something the character would reasonably want? But I do think solving this by saying "all of the morally-off emotionally driven cruelty he did on his way to spite Batman was actually reflective of his own version of Batman's stance that's exactly the same except he thinks it's GOOD to kill people" isn't ideal. To be fully honest, it seems to me like he never particularly cared one way or the other about killing people to "clean Gotham of crime," he just did everything he could to get the power necessary to pull off his personal plans, and took out any particularly heinous people he encountered along the way (like in Lost Days.) Not to say I think the fact he killed people keeps him up at night anymore than everything else in his life events, I just never really thought he was out there wholeheartedly kneecapping some dude selling weed or random guy robbing a tv store for justice.

Looping wayyy back to my question, Is this (^) contradictory to the way he's written/the overall average perception of the character? Because like I enjoyed his writing in Beast World i have zero significant issue with anything there, I just didn't believe it would be a hot take, like yeah, that is Jason. It's been a while since I've read utrh and lost days, but I don't think my takeaway directly contradicts either of those too bad iirc. Idk all this to say I think Jason killing and being alright with killing is an obvious and objective fact, but i guess i've always seen it as more of a practical tactic than a moral belief, and I think taking the actions made during the lowest points of a character's life where he is obsessively focused on this ONEEEE thing and trying to apply it as a Motivating Stance to everything he's done after that, doesn't really follow logically for me.

#edit: i am so so open to discussion and disagreement on this but please try to have something substantial to say. god bless!#like ofc jason kills but to me it was less “everyone I've ever killed deserves death objectively”#and more “when people are dead they stop doing things like heinous atrocities and trying to kill me"#i don't even think he wanted the joker dead (only) because he thinks he objectively morally deserves death #although the joker is one of the most extreme cases possible and he if does think that he's VERY justified #i really do think it was just about bruce #and wanting bruce to avenge him to show he loved him and he mattered and wanting his dad to give him security #all the killing was about the clown and everything with the clown was about bruce #i've NEVER forgotten the bit in lost days where he has the joker tied up at gunpoint and doesn't kill him #i think if it was only about a moral greater good situation he would have taken him out then and there #if you disagree i'd love to hear why provided you can be civil and not an jerk #also if you disagree PLEASE PLEASE put screenshots and comic issues if possible #i'd love to check them out and form my own stance on them #just know that if you say like. battle for the cowl. or the Tom King batman annual or something i probably won't care too much #comic characterization is ever-changing and inconsistent i truly believe that the best thing to do is just read the important stuff #and try to form your own stances from there #because there's never gonna be 100% of comics involving a character that align with each other perfectly and that's just a given #jason todd #red hood #dc comics

i think cove and baxter could also work if it's their step 4 selves. baxter is finally done running away from things and being more genuine and vulnerable and while cove is slow to warm up to people, he would see baxter is trying and slowly but surely their "we only hangout if our mutual friends invite us to the same space" turns into texting each of their own accord and eventually that becomes hanging out of their own accord

they had their ups and their downs but qiu appreciates derek not giving up on them and sticking with them through the hard times

by the time qiu is back to their normal rizzler self, derek's busy with sports and it is hard for them to meet up with each other but they stay in contact. but step 4 would be when they get together because derek let's it drop he had a crush on qiu when they were kids "haha definitely over it NOW though" (he is not)

qiu gains a crush on derek between steps 2 and 3 but never said anything because they kinda felt after being such a jerk to derek during a good chunk of high school, he doesn't deserve to pursue him but after hearing derek had a crush on him qiu decides they're gonna shoot their shot (happy ending ofc though)

Thank you so much for your question about Ilyana. It makes my heart so happy when people show an interest in her.

I have a little story I’ve been working on for a while for her & Levi. It’s just never seen the light of day because I don’t have a lot of confidence in my writing/storytelling. So it’s been more of a project just for me. :’)

I’ll insert a few paragraphs of it here though just to give a little more insight about her (her background, her personality, etc) <3

Year 843:

That day had finally come; the day that Ilyana Hoover dreaded every single day since her adopted brother, Bertolt, had told her that he wanted to become a warrior. Today was the day she watched him inherit the Colossal Titan. She couldn't believe it, she didn't want to. Thirteen years. Thirteen years is all she had left with him. For years she had tried to talk him out of it. But here she is now. Watching him train for his upcoming mission in Paradis with the now Armored Titan and Female Titan. She's going with them on their mission. She had already decided that long ago; she told herself no matter what the outcome was today that she would be there for him. She knows her brother. He's emotional, sometimes weak, and anxious. No matter what role they decide to give her in the mission, she would do it, she would go. If only to protect him.

"I really don't think you should come along, Ilyana. It's going to be dangerous. We don't know what these island devils are capable of. Stay here and look after mom. She needs you." He pleads with her that evening.

"You're really lecturing me over it being dangerous? Bert, you're scared of your own shadow most of the time" She sighs. "If I don't go with you and something happens to you, I wouldn't be able to live with that. I already made up my mind. I don't trust Reiner to protect you, either. You and I both know how hot headed and emotional he can be at times. Mom will be just fine. She's got dad here to watch over her. You know he'd never let her roam the streets alone."

He shakes his head and pinches the bridge of his nose. She's right. He knows she is; and he knows there's no convincing her otherwise. His sister has always been stubborn. A bit hot headed herself at times. He knows she just wants the best for him. She's always been protective of him. But he can't help but wish she'd believe in him, just this one time. He knows he can handle himself. He's been through the training, he knows what to expect; what he's getting himself into.

Ilyana always knew she was different from the others of her kind. Born a Marleyan but adopted at a young age by an Eldian family; the Hoover family. They’d found her alone on the street one evening and decided to take her in; a few years later came Bertolt. She never knew her real parents, nor what had happened to them. Every Marleyan here was disgusted by the Eldians. She had watched her family be talked down to, pushed around and spit at walking down the streets. But growing up and living in an Eldian family made her feel much differently towards them. She had read the history books, heard all of the rumors; But she refused to believe they were all as bad as the people of Marley had made them out to be. She loved the Hoovers. They had always treated her like their own. The least she could do in return for everything they'd done for her is watch after their son, her brother; blood relation or not. She would protect him with her life.

TLDR: Ilyana Hoover is a Marleyan; she was adopted by the Hoovers at a young age. She’s extremely protective over her brother, Bertolt. She finds herself feeling super sympathetic towards all Eldians; including the ones on the island. Shes confident, not afraid to hold her own ground/speak up for herself; but can also be extremely hot headed & rash. (Which causes for some bickering with Levi later on in the story) she travels to the island with the Warriors as a spy.

@elgringo300 - I don't want to put you on the spot, but this comment is inaccurate in ways that make it a good history lesson. While I'm not a history expert either, I'm interested in the history of early Christianity, and it's a good bit more complicated (and fascinating!) than most people realize.

TLDR: "Roman" and "Christian" were never mutually exclusive categories. The religious fate of the Roman Empire and the rise of Christianity are one and the same.

There are two things you have to understand here:

The story of early Christianity that you get told in church has some gaps in it.

The story of the Fall Of The Roman Empire you get taught in school is often based in older scholarship. It's also often taught by people who don't understand the scale and timing of the events that happened. It's inaccurate to how historians understand the past.

Full disclosure- I'm tired and too lazy to cite sources. I'm also simplifying things dramatically because this is a tumblr post. If you see a tumblr post claiming that everything you know is horse hockey, you should do your own research before you incorporate it into your belief system- and that includes this one.

We good? Moving on.

SO. The story of early Christianity a lot of people learn goes something like this: "Jesus came, taught his followers how to live a good life, died, was resurrected, and went back to heaven. His apostles and followers tried to tell all the world what happened! But the evil Roman Empire tried to stop them and martyred any Christians they caught. Christians persevered, until the Empire collapsed under its own weight, and people were free to be Christian. And then, because Christianity is obviously the Right Way To Live, it spread to the whole world."

...And, well, there's a couple chunks missing from that story. For this post, the part we're concerned about is the bit between "Christians were martyred for their beliefs!" and "Rome fell".

The thing you have to understand about Roman religion is that Romans didn't think about religion the same way we do. In a monotheistic world where religion is usually a set of moral and cultural precepts, it can be hard to imagine a polytheistic world where religion is about the gods. The state religion in Rome- the one the Romans used law and custom to enforce- was about Making Deals With Gods (and ancestors, and heroes, and at certain points the Emperor), asking for their protection and giving them worship and offerings in exchange.

The Romans genuinely did not care what gods you worshiped in your own home. They might make fun of you if you worshiped weird provincial gods; they might be disgusted or angry if you said your gods asked you to break Roman laws. But they did not care what you believed in the same way that most American Christians today care.

What they did care about was whether or not you did the customary sacrifices and offerings that went along with the state religion. The best way to think of it- and this is a dramatic oversimplification- you know those evangelicals who are 'okay' with people not being Christian, but insist that no one is allowed to be gay because gay people make God send hurricanes at them? It was a bit more like that than the people who think that no one can be a good person without being Christian. The Romans were genuinely concerned that the gods would get pissed off if you didn't propitiate them, and no one wanted that.

Generally, if the Romans conquered an area where people were monotheists? An area like, say, Judea? They did not care if you did not believe in their gods. As long as you did the state religion's sacrifices and rituals? They'd be totally cool with you. Hell, they might even try to worship your monotheistic God along with all of theirs. (Remember Paul's sermon at the Temple of Diana on the Unknown God? Yeah.)

The trouble is, monotheists do not, as a rule, like acknowledging gods that are not their god. So there was always some... friction between Rome and Judea. Judea was an outlying border province full of people who were not always cool with the Roman state religion. People who could and did quite violently rebel against Roman rule. People who would get angry and rebellious if you tried to force them to acknowledge that your gods even existed, much less tried to force them to worship. Some emperors decided the best way to handle this was to exempt Jews from following the state religion; it saved everyone from a lot of bloody guerilla warfare. Some emperors decided the best way to handle this was to crack down and use Jews as scapegoats for every bad thing that happened to the Empire.

And for the first hundred years of Christianity's existence, people thought Christianity was just a weird form of Judaism. Legally, socially, and politically, Christians by and large got treated the same way. They were a freaky religious minority in an outlying province. But as long as they followed the rules and made the correct sacrifices at the correct times? Generally, they got ignored. If they refused to make those sacrifices? It depended on the whims of who was enforcing the law. Sometimes, they got ignored. Sometimes, they had their property confiscated. Sometimes, they got fed to lions. It really depended on who was running the show.

So how did we get from "Christianity is a freaky minority of an already strange religious minority in the border provinces" to "most people in Europe are Christian"? Well, there's two pieces to this.

FIRST: because Roman state religion was mostly dedicated to propitiating the gods, and because Rome tended to culturally integrate its provinces rather than enforcing its own customs upon them, mystery cults thrived. A lot of different religions sprung up that promised enlightenment, a higher state of consciousness, or everlasting life. And a lot of people bought into them, because the Roman state religion wasn't very spiritually fulfilling. Think of it like... your weird auntie who goes to a megachurch but swears by tantric yoga, or TikTok witches who say they can talk to angels. I don't know as much about mystery cults in Rome as I'd like, but there were three very popular ones:

Mithraism, which was from the East and which was popular among soldiers.... Sol Invicta, which I know very little about except that it existed... and Christianity, which was popular among common people, women, and slaves. (Incidentally, I could go on about early Christianity and women's lib for hours. Don't get me started.)

Either of these cults- or any of the smaller ones, really- could have wound up taking the place in society that Christianity did. People really want to believe in something bigger than themselves, and Strange Wisdom from Far Away is always going to find a foothold among people who want to believe.

So. Plenty of Romans became Christian. And the early Church's missionary efforts meant that people in Rome, Greece, Egypt, and even farther-flung places converted, because they took the "go ye to all the world" thing seriously. Eventually, a Roman emperor named Constantine converted to Christianity... and began using the state power that had enforced the Roman state religion to spread Christianity. He returned property that the state confiscated, he passed laws banning Christians from having to do state sacrifices, he protected missionaries, and a lot more stuff like that.

Because it was now safe and legally protected to be Christian? Because Christians now had special legal privileges? And because missionaries, emboldened by the Emperor himself, got even more intense in their proselytizing? Christianity spread like wildfire. Plenty of Romans converted. Plenty more stopped thinking of Christians as weird freaks and started thinking of them as their friends and neighbours. And people in the second category might not convert, but their wives and children might.

Here's the last piece of the puzzle. How much time do you think elapsed between Constantine converting to Christianity and the commonly accepted "Fall Of The Roman Empire"? Was it ten years? Twenty? Fifty?

Try closer to a hundred and fifty.

A hundred and fifty years in our past, Queen Victoria was still reigning over England (and brutally conquering New Zealand), Japan was doing the Meiji Restoration, the Mary Celeste was very busy going missing, and Susan B Anthony was casting her first vote.

Think of all the changes that have happened to the world since 1872. Change happened slower in the Classical era. But it still happened, and there was still a very long time for it to happen in. There was plenty of time for people to convert to Christianity before Rome fell. Plenty of people did, because it was popular and safe to. And as time went on, Christianity lost a lot of its rebellious nature and became a religion that was backed up by state power, palatable to people with power, and generally ... well. As someone commented on my religion post, any religion can go bad if it gets in bed with an empire.

And for most people- especially people who weren't in Rome and the parts of the Empire near to it? The "fall of Rome" was a slow process. Rome fell in part because of a bunch of economic crises and a plague, more than anything else. So it wasn't like The Walking Dead; the apocalypse was a very slow burn.

You got less news, less food, less luxuries. You got less people coming from distant provinces, and more strongmen trying to push you around. You got fewer soldiers protecting you, and more bandits. Your grandchildren would realize that they were living in a very different world than you were, but you might not realize just how much things have changed in the moment.

....So yes. Even accepting your premise that Christians put the world back together after Rome fell- which is a huge misunderstanding in its own right, to be clear- most of the Christians in question also thought of themselves as either Romans or as the heirs to Rome's Empire. Look up the Donation of Constantine sometime, or the history of Carolingian France, or the Byzantines. Hell, look at the history of the Holy Roman Empire (which, as we all know, was none of the above).

Like I said, this is all a simplification, and anyone who knows more about the history than I do, please feel free to elaborate. But yeah. Until, like, the Protestant Reformation? Most people did not see "Roman" or "Christian" as in any way contradictory. The reason we do now is largely due to Catholics focusing on martyrs, English religious wars and anti-Catholic sentiment, and Edward Gibbon. It's ahistorical. It's just not true.

If the Roman Empire had (somehow) become atheist, had given atheists special religious privileges, and had encouraged atheist proselytizing? Most people in the former Roman Empire and its descendants' colonies would be atheists. If the Roman Empire's state religion had remained a polytheistic muddle? We'd all be worshiping Jupiter and Juno. If the Roman Empire's state religion was Mithraism, we'd all be worshiping Mithra. Because people respond to incentives, and "the Empire is nudging you into converting" is one hell of an incentive.

It depends on if you want to go by a strict gift basis or personality. Some of those aren't exclusive though-

TLDR-

Julieta- Wayzz, Alma- Nooroo or Liiri, Pepa- Daizzi/Longg, Bruno- Sass or Tikki, Felix- Diazzi, Augustin- Kalkki, Isabela- Pollen, Dolores- Longg or Barkk, Luisa- Pollen & Duusu, Camilo- Pollen, Antonio- Duusu/unclear, and Mirabel- any of them really.

Bonus Turtle Julieta who didn't make it into AVB- Her name is Hicotea

Julieta for example I think would do well with the turtle both because it's the closest to her gift (since besides the ladybug there isn't a healing power) and I think she and Wayzz would get along well.

Alma would theoretically either have the butterfly (Matriarch deal) or the Ladybug and Cat. But I don't think she'd get along with any of the kwamis very well. Maybe Liiri, but she'd not here.

Pepa would power wise have the dragon, and I think in personality it fits okay. But I would personally either give her Wayzz or Daizzi. Possibly also Orikko.

Bruno would have either Fluff or Sass based on his gift and I think he'd get along with both. I also think he and Tikki would get along (hence Cochineal) and Plagg would have a similar dynamic with him that he does with Adrien, albeit less parental/familial, more platonic. I think he and Mullo would also get along.

Felix would get along with Daizzi, Ziggy, or Orikko. All three seem to thrive on holders with high energy and positive attitude

Augustin could do well with Wayzz and possible Kaalki, since she's probably help with his clumsiness through sheer determination. As well as Stompp who would go "Fuck it, lets just throw shit." I gave him Sass in AVB since I figured he'd be willing to try a million times to get it right, but its not my fist pick.

Isabela would probably do best with Pollen, both because haha Bee, but also- Pollen is a very loyal bee. She calls Isabela her queen but if her queen wants to throw color bombs and do fancy acrobatics with vines? Bravo! Keep going. I stand by the idea that Isabela and Longg could never really get along. Second choices would be Xuppu or Trixx since they'd encourage her to have fun but Trixx for sure would not let her get away with being bitchy. Tikki would also probably do her good.

Dolores could still do well with Mullo at the best of times but I'd be more inclined to give her Pollen, Longg, or Barkk. Pollen and Long would be very respectful of her sensitive hearing while still helping push her, and Barkk would bite anyone being too loud. She is very loyal. Dolores would probably also do well with Plagg for the simple fact he is high demand for food, but very apathetic the rest of the time.

Luisa would match with Roaar in terms of gifts but personality wise I think Pollen, Duusu, Kalkki, or Barkk. With I think Pollen or Duusu being the strongest two.

Camilo would match with Trixx for powers but I wasn't kidding in A Lawless Cat when I said I thought he'd make a good Bee. They're leaders and need to hold attention, but can get in a good sting if you turn your back. Other pick would be Orikko.

Antonio I think does well with the Peacock but otherwise he's a bit to young to know what other miraculous he would thrive with. His compassion would potentially also do well with the butterfly.

And now Mirabel, the character who i think has the widest picks.

Sticking to Cannon Encanto Mirabel I still think she'd have the widest variety. Obviously Nooroo is the top pick, Mirabel likes to help people but most of the time she's teaching them to help themselves first. Even to her own detriment. I think she and Tikki would thrive as two creative spirits, same with Ziggy. Her compassion and good understanding of feelings and others, would make her do well with Duusu. Plagg would encourage ehr to fight for herself, Liiri would want her to break free. Xuupu, Trixx, Orikko, and Diazzi would help her bring fun back into her life as well as spread her strengths to others. She's intuitive enough to work well with Sass, Roarr would push her to take power into her hands and be heard. Stompp would teach her to defend herself. The only kwami I think she wouldn't get on perfectly with is Longg, but even then it wouldn't be particularly bad. It's just that- Mirabel has specifically gone her whole life seeing herself as Imperfect which would strain her connection to him.

I think theres something to be said about the subtle emotional manipulation of August.

The biggest thing that pinged my red flag senses was that Day had to do all the emotional heavylifting in their friendship. If August was upset he would play poorly, making it so Day had to make him feel better so they'd win. It kind of feels like punishment vs reward for Day to do or say the "right thing". Also just the continued lack of care for Day's time. Im sure the show will show that there was some kind of miscommunication/misunderstanding with August being late, but this isn't a first time thing. Day implies it happened alot which is red flag number 2. Also the immediate anger to the point of almost getting physical when he first saw Day again was really telling. The biggest red flag for me though was the act of hiding from Day after overhearing what he heard at the end and expecting Mohk to just go along with the lie. He puts Mohk in a tough place to be the one to either tell or hide the truth while he just screws off without any explanation.

Tldr: August is giving off really bad vibes so far.

i can't stop listening to the 'purpose is glorious' track from this season's ost and thinking about how lovely the title and its meaning are. it's just such an amazing underlying theme in this show, and - while i do have criticisms about some of the choices made for the series finale - i really do feel the writers wholeheartedly delivered in sending that message home. for me personally, loki's ending is so gratifying and a large part of that is solely from viewing their arc's conclusion with the perspective of this theme in mind. to have spent years watching this character i hold very dear to my heart struggle to find belonging, to feel as though they matter and there is reason in their existence, finally get a chance to show - and recognize - their worth was so, so rewarding. and honestly, i think the message behind the phrasing of 'purpose is glorious' is all the more meaningful because of how loki's arc finished. yes, the outcome was bittersweet; yes, we're left knowing loki didn't get the happiness they undeniably earned after everything they'd gone through. it smarts something fierce to know their journey up until they deviated from their timeline and became a variant, as well as seen their eventual intended fate. the ache is only worsened after witnessing everything that happens within the TVA and the entirety of loki's character growth leading up to a redefining moment where they willingly choose to undergo a nightmarish amount of time in the endeavor to do the right thing. of course we want them to emerge victorious when they've struggled for so long, but that's not the point. loki's final moments are them forfeiting their right to a happy ending to preserve the stories of others because all stories matter and should inherently reserve the free will to be written; as sylvie says, loki makes their choice so their loved ones and life across the multiverse still have a chance to belong somewhere and embrace their place in the world. the take away is that even burden can be glorious. even with all the hardships of life - all the inevitable heartache, disappointment, and grief we encounter just by being alive - we have meaning in our existence. there is meaning in the trials we face, and the suffering we endure in order to overcome them. our pain gives us purpose; it gives us the ability to love, to grow from and for each other, and choose to sacrifice our happiness for the benefit of another. loki's purpose was forged in the bonds of those they met in their time at the TVA and the sense of value they gained from their companionship. their sacrifice perfectly conveys how the human capacity to love is one of cosmic greatness, which can ultimately surpass our instinctual desire to preserve one's self. we can move immovable mountains and challenge insurmountable adversity in behalf of the ones we love and their welfare. if that isn't an act deserving of glory, I don't know what is.

tldr; loki's purpose is the friends they made along the way = as the saying goes, 'tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all'. or: our own lives have purpose because of the connections we share with others, even when we are met with great loss.

Hiya!!! This will be a bit of a long one but I think if anyone could write it out it's you 👉👈✨

Would you be willing to write headcanons for the glamrocks and the daycare attendants (all separate) where their S/O (the reader) has given them their phone to play music on while they work nearby, not close enough to hear what they're playing but enough that their partner can ask them questions if they get confused, because their animatronic asked about music and really has only ever listened to the things Fazcorp owns and not music from the Outside World, and said animatronic goes snooping and sees a playlist labelled with their Motif (🐻🐺🐊🐥🌕☀️) and like a whole bunch of hearts and glitter (that was clearly hidden away for some reason) that you'd clearly been trying to hide, so the animatronic decides to listen in on whatever this playlist was, especially since it seems this was about them, made long before you two had started Dating at all, and it opens up to some of the most yearningest love songs known to man. Like the sappiest, sweetest, head over heels nonsense the animatronic has ever heard. S/O isn't happy when they get back and catch their animatronic partner red handed having snooped where they weren't supposed to (almost having listened to the whole playlist), but when asked about having made the playlist that's the definition of Down Bad, they have to stutter their way through an explanation, that they were absolutely smitten with their animatronic before they'd even really become friends, and this playlist kinda put their feelings into words so they could be Normal around their animatronic.

Tldr; Mostly, I just want you to write headcanons about the animatronics listening to love songs that their s/o clearly thought fit them, and how they'd feel knowing that their most favorite human in the world wants to kiss them so bad it makes them look stupid!!

▸ she's pretty innocent in her intents when she accidentally stumbles across the playlist- she really only was trying to look for other stuff to listen to anyways, and figured your playlists might give her more great music. oh she rly does trust ur taste :]

▸however,,, while browsing for more stuff to listen to, the playlist catches her eye. it's a bit hidden away, but from the title she can tell it has to do with her somehow. of course, she's reluctant- but she figures it wouldn't be all that bad to check it out. she'd just apologize if you didn't want her to see!

▸ the first song begins to play and she listens- it's catchy and upbeat, sort of bedroom pop type vibe with sappy sweet lyrics. she finds herself nodding along to rhythm happily. hwo could she not love such a cutesy song?

▸ but the second it hits her- the second she realizes why you made it, she cannot hold back from reacting out loud. her sudden squeal diverts your attention from your task at hand to her immediately.

▸ you immediately figure out what she's talking about. sure the reaction is very, VERY bubbly and cute but it doesn't stop the heating of your face. you approach her, taking the phone and try to explain yourself, stuttering through every word- and she shushes u, sparing you of an explanation. chica pulls you into a tight hug, gushing about how much of a sweetheart you are. she is then very eager to ask if you'd let her make a playlist for u.

"hey, chica? you done with my phone yet?" you call back to her, now back to completing your task at hand.

"aaalmost! just you wait- i wanna make it perfect!"

she's had your phone for a while now. you can't help but wonder how long the playlist is going to end up at this rate. still, she gives you a smile and a wink when you glance to her, signaling you just to wait a bit longer.

maybe a perfect playlist would be worth the time waiting.

"there!" chica approaches, holding the bright screen inches from your face. "you can listen to it anytime you wanna- 521 hours of the best songs for my-"

you cut her off with a small "h u h."

GLAMROCK FREDDY headcanons:

▸ very interested in music beyond what fazcorp provides. instead of choosing songs at random, he checks through genres and tries out certain artists' discographies. he is Very Specific w/ trying new music. anyways! he endz up enjoying music by david bowie, elton john, and queen.

▸ freddy is quite curious about learning about the music he's listening to. he'll occasionally do a quick google search on the bands and singers he's listening to. sometimes, he'll just ask you the question himself.

"superstar? who is hatsune miku?"

▸ on one hand, freddy's so pumped to find music from the outside world. on the other hand. oh man. SO UPSET he can't listen to this stuff when he wants to on demand. bro doesn't have a phone </3

▸ gonna be real he didnt even mean to snoop around your phone all that much. he just happened upon your little playlist after trying to find a song you recommended him based on his new favorite artists.

he locatez tha playlist, and on first glance, doesn't really get why there's a playlist for him (which was made before you two were even together). were u just a really big fan??? once he scrolls through the songs and listens to a couple- he gets the message. and he is practically melting.

▸ a little anxious to tell you he found it though, considering if you wanted him to see it, you probably would have shown it to him. he doesn't wanna go through your private stuff- even if he just found a cute little playlist. the last thing he wants is to invade your privacy. he wants to respect boundaries as MUCH AS POSSIBLE. and ough. perhaps checking out your other playlists was not very respectful of him.

▸ regardless of his hesitance to tell you, he's very honest about it. not really one for lying. he tries to mention it in a non chalant way so you don't freak out (you do) and he doesn't get sent into a guilt spiral (he does)

he awkwardly hands you back the phone, trying to collect himself for a second before facing you.

"i like the playlist you made for me.." he says, giving you his best totally-not-nervous smile.

▸ yes you try to get through your explanation without exploding. he does feel bad, watching you hide your face while trying to explain and stutter through your words- but oh. wow. he thinks it's absolutely adorable. insists that you should let him listen to the rest- when you're ready to show the playlist to him, of course.

"i did not mean to go through your personal playlists, i promise- i was just curious! ah,, although that is not an excuse-"

you try to calm your racing heart, fumbling to put the phone back in your pocket. "it's... fine- yeah- but don't you go poking around that playlist the next time i let you play some music!"

though your arms fold in front of you, huffing- you can't help but break a little smile.

freddy only chuckles, lifting a paw and patting the top of your head.

"of course."

"good!" you say, trying to conceal the small quiver in your voice. good thing he didn't listen to all of it. "i haven't gotten the chance to even update it recently so- so..."

oh god. he tilts his head, the small movements of his ears betraying his efforts to conceal his excitement in the promise of more music for him. no chance in hell were you about to confess that you were planning to add more songs to the sappy mess of a playlist.

"NEVERMINDBYE-"

▸ at first, roxy seems not to show much interest in checking out more music. you decide to play some music for her anyways- and later find her checking out some songs for herself.

▸ yeah, of course she likes glamrock- but wow. the real stuff is nothing quite like what fazcorp makes them perform. it's better.

along with glamrock, she likes punk music, midwest emo, alt rock- but. yo. she finds my chemical romance and goes insane. bro listens to one mcr song and immediately:

▸ while getting there though... oough she snoops with the FULL INTENTION to find ur private playlists. the minute she lays eyes on the playlist, clearly labelled to indicate it's for her? she doesn't even hesitate. straight up hits play, faster than lighting. i mean, it's for her, no? why not have a listen.

▸ the first song began, and it's utterly sappy and oozing with lovey dovey emotion. at first she's like "bro. what is this." and then she's like. "oH. OH SHIT BRO."

doesn't take her long to realize why you made even before you were dating each other. god you were absolutely smitten by the looks of things- she can't help but snicker a little. how cute of you.

▸ this actually boosts her esteem greatly. like you wanted WANTED her. roxy's almost done with the entire thing and then you, who could just faintly hear the music- slowly recognize the order of the songs were playing in. in a haste, you drop everything in attempts to grab your phone from her.

▸ "HEY!! WAIT- YOU WERENT SUPPOSED TO FIND THAT-"

your efforts to reach the phone are futile, her being much taller and holding it ever so slightly out of your reach. of course she was teasing you now, of all times.

"guess you always were my biggest fan, weren't cha?" she laughs, watching you grab at your phone.

"GIVE ME MY PHONE ROXANNE."

your reddening face says it all. she seems to be enjoying this but don't let her fool you. though the playlist's songs were all sappy and heartfelt- it was genuine. the way you cared for her, even before you two dated was so kind and sweet. you loved her in the way she always wanted someone to. and oh,,, how she cherished being loved like that by someone like you.

once she's finally had her fun, she hands you your phone back. you immediately shove the phone into your pocket, and turn to go back to work, but she gently touches your shoulder, stopping you in your tracks.

she hesitates a bit before asking,

"...is there a way i can uh.. keep listening to this?"

MONTGOMERY GATOR headcanons:

▸ (on behalf of all the victims of the monty fans on tiktok, i will not be mentioning closer by nine inch nails. yes i know the amount of thirst traps created under this song for this character. i do not need to relive that event. /j /lh for the record he probably does find it and enjoy it though. im sincerely sorry.) loves a lot of music, similar to roxanne's taste but less pop-y and a little more underground. he's very specific.

▸ boys don't cry by the cure is the first song he hears, and is INSISTENT on getting to listen to more music that fazcorp doesn't have control over. it's a whole world of music out there- and lucky for him, you're lettin him experience it!!! ^_^

▸ you hand over your phone and surprisingly, his claws do in fact work with the touchscreen. huh. didn't expect that.

he finds a ton of new music he likes, probably creating a playlist of his own so he can relisten if you ever give him your phone again. on occasion, he'll ask you your opinion on a song he finds before playing it. he trusts your taste in music. just little random questions about certain artists. some of which, you don't know how to explain.

"what's 100 gecs."

"an experience."

he is very overwhelmed by All The Noises of hyperpop. decides it is not for him, but. hm. interesting to listen to.

▸ suprisingly, monty wasn't even trying to uncover any hidden playlists. he just happened to wanna see which music you enjoyed and bam. playlist with gator emoji. his stupid ass doesn't even realize its for him specifically. his thought process is just "oh?? music for gators??? i am gator. music for me." and clicks it.

▸ four songs in, he does recognize that it's a playlist of love songs- all the songs are sugar sweet, and he can't stop glancing down at the phone, and then back up at you.

he's a little confused though. based on the date it was made, you two weren't together- why would you have made thi-

▸ ok so he's not very subtle at all. the minute it clicks he IMMEDIATELY TELLS YOU HE FOUND IT. he has barely gotten through the thing and is already exposing the fact that he found a playlist you were definitely hiding from him.

▸ "why didn't you show me this earlier?" he asked you, grinning like an idiot.

"music from the outside world? well- i didn't know you didn't have access to-"

"no. this."

he raises the phone's volume, turning the screen over to you to show you what he's listening to. it doesn't take you long to register what's happening.

"MONTY PUT MY PHONE DOWN RIGHT NOW-"

it takes a moment for both of you to stop overheating before he shuts you up. you're trying to explain, stammering and shaking, pacing back an forth while all he can muster is a slightly amused, slightly flustered "uh huh.." to each of your attempted clarifications.

he then, proceeded to tease you even more than roxanne would've. though he laughs at how mortified you seem to be, it's hard for him to deny how much you made him feel.

it was a strange feeling, being so cared for. he doesn't know how to explain how glad he was to have found the playlist, or how to express his adoration for you. monty isn't exactly the best with words after all.

once you manage to grab your phone back, and his loud laughter dies down, there's a small quiet moment between the two of you.

"it's a good playlist, y'know." he mumbled sheepishly. "...would love to hear the rest of it sometime."

he totally bragged about it to the rest of the glamrocks by the way.

SUN headcanons:

▸ be nice to the guy,,,, if u had just discovered more music beyond the daycare theme and the occassional music you could sort of hear from the glamrocks, maybe you'd also have shit music taste. /lh

you find that sun's music taste is... eccentric. certainly very subjective and niche but. yknow. whatever. he seems to have a talent for finding obscure songs??? like. really easily. he just stumbles across them and enjoys them.

▸ the music he enjoys tends to encapsulate his energy very well. silly, lighthearted songs. some which uh,, may not be quality (this part does NOT apply to sun), but they're FUN. just. listen to all those goofy ass noises in the daycare theme and tell me im wrong. he also finds veggietales and you practically have to beg him to listen to something other than silly songs with larry

▸ accidentally goes a little overboard with random song selection. likes to skip into the middle parts of songs instead of listening from start to end. has a habit of looping songs a ridiculous amount of times if he enjoys or skipping them early if he decided thirty seconds in that He Doesnt Enjoy them.

▸ and then accidentally blasts death metal. full volume. an opportune moment to teach him about the volume button!

he tells you that it's fine, you've got nothing to worry about, that you;re such a sweetheart and such a thoughtful, caring kind, lovely person- and still, you're terribly humiliated.

you were left hiding your face in your hands, as you tried to explain to him. the beating of your heart is as rapid as your speech.

sun pressed a hand to his chest, in mock offense. "you think giving me affection is embarrassing???? i'm wounded by your words!! how cruel of you sunshine... there iS NO RECOVERY FOR ME-"

"sun, goddamit, that's not what i-"

"NO MORE!! it aches too much for me to bear!"

"i'm deleting the playlist if you keep this up."

now, everytime you've got a break by the end of the day and choose to spend it with him, he'll beg request that you play that cute little playlist you made for him. song after song, he pleads with you to play "just one more" before you've lost track of how many you've gone through.

"here, if i give you my phone, you can listen to the rest. i gotta get back to actually doing my job." you smile, handing over your phone. he holds it for a second- before giving it right back to you.

you raise an eyebrow, confused. wasn't he just begging you to listen to it? why doesn't he want to anymore?

with a smile, he explains with a level of sincerity that tugs at your heartstrings. "i like listening to it a lot more when you're around!"

MOON headcanons:

▸ you're the one who suggests letting him listen to a few tunes- at first, he really doesn't see the point. he seems indifferent when it come to music but curiosity, however, wins him over.

▸ he doesn't... really know where to start. unlike sun, who went pressing on every song which had a fun title or cool album cover- he just kind of stares at the screen for a bit. it takes some guidance and song reccomendations to actually get him listening.

moon doesn't ask many questions when listening. he takes a bit to go through options and pick-and once he does play one, listens to it start to end in complete silence.

▸ during all of this, you note that he has no genre preference, but seems to gravitate towards softer songs. (this is fully just me being a fan of the moldy peaches but. idk. i think moon would like their songs too.)

"I kiss you on the brain in the shadow of a train I kiss you all starry eyed, my body's swinging from side to side I don't see what anyone can see in anyone else But you..."

the song plays in the silence. once it ends, moon considers it for a second- and you smile as you hear him replay it. it's kind of sweet really. though he makes very little comment on the songs he listens to, you really can tell when he enjoys them or not.

▸ a couple songs in, and he's wondering what playlists you've made. you don't mind this at first, knowing he certainly wont find The Playlist. he tries out a few playlists- finds a few songs he likes, moves on. wash, rinse, repeat.

and then He Finds It.

▸ he's quiet about it. real careful not to make too much of a fuss so you don't know that he's found it. he begins listening through, wondering what type of songs you could have possibly added for a playlist created for him.

and is immediately struck with the revelation of why you created it.

▸ once he gets through all of it, and you're done your job- he hands back your phone with no intention to tell you he found the playlist.

however,, one glance at your listening history and you figure out exactly what he was up to. tucking the phone securely into the pocket of your pants, you confront him.

"you're mad." he comments, watching you struggle to form words correctly.

"you know i'm not mad." the blood rushing to your cheeks makes it incredibly hard to think. "i just- you know that- it's just that- when i made that playlist, i didn't think you'd find it- not like it's bad that you found it! okay, maybe a little bad- but- but- i'm not mad! it's just- that- um- when-"

the sound of your own voice becomes insufferable to you, as you try to clear things up. he lifts a finger and presses it to your lips, effectively shushing you.

he cackles a little- and it becomes apparent he only wanted to watch you squirm as you attempted to explain.

it then becomes very tempting to bite his finger clean off. moon's a bastard.

"secrets must not be kept." he chided. the glint in his eyes told you he was entertained by all of this.

your nose scrunches at this, mumbling under your breath, "well it's not much of a secret if we're already dating-"

"hush."

he loops an arm around you, pulling you close. his other hand, reaches up to pat your head. you were embarrassed- not about to cry. still, you weren't denying it was comfortable in his arms. you rested your head on his chest.

a few seconds pass. you finally decide to pull away from the embrace, before mouthing him a quick thank you.

your work is over, and with that, you're about to turn away and leave for the day- but the sudden weightlessness in your pockets makes your heart drop.

a crackle of laughter from his voicebox is heard, as he slowly reveals your phone in his hands.

you make a grab at it- and he is hoisted up by his cord into the air and very much out of your reach.

your ears can barely make out the first song on the playlist beginning. you open your mouth to protest, but he interrupts.

"i'm not done with this."

Hi hello I’ve been rotating ur hunger au around for a month it’s soooo good! but one thing I just keep wondering is like, what if grian hadn’t been found out until later in the games, say after secret life? Considering that would also be farther along in Hermitcraft season 9, after the crossover and buttercups, would anything significant change in litd ?

OH GODS OUGH...... well okay lemme put it this way. Pov you find out one of your closest friends whom you deeply trust has been highkey using and manipulating you for YEARS and is the reason for a huge chunk of your horrific trauma. And didnt say anything about it, didnt try to do damage control or come clean, just accepted that this would fuck you up beyond belief and kept doing it because it meant they could keep living. Like..... listen Grian coming back after doing this thrice is already a difficult enough sell, but 5 times????? Holy shit forget it i think AT BEST he'd get like. MAYBE Scar and Mumbo and Pearl to help him. And even then I dont know if they'd be willing to stick around for a very long time. Scar, maybe, bc i think hes insane especially about Grian, but everyone else??? Jesus. Genuinely not fuckin sure

I think thered be a lot more RAGE than there is rn, and a lot more bitterness, which sure is saying something since theres plenty of that to go around in canon as it is. Absolutely fucked end tbh i dont think thered be a huge chance for Grian to ever go back not even years and years later like in ia au. Even in the face of him dying. Idk i just cant see the hermits letting him back in or wanting anything to do with him on the whole after fucking up that badly, yknow???

Three times kinda hits that sweet spot to me, where its fucked up but it was spread out over years and Grian tried so fucking hard every single time to resist, so it makes sense that things are very difficult to get through when trying to mend fences but isnt impossible. But considering double life, limited life, AND secret life all took place within s9, i think that,, makes a huge difference in how things would go, tbh. My headcanon for the au is that each "season" takes place over a few years, but even by that timeline thats still three major fuck ups in a much shorter timespan, and not given the sorta,,,, bookending??? Ig??? Of taking place during separate seasons.

So uh, tldr; bad!! it would go so so bad. Idk what exactly would change majorly-wise but i think that betrayal would sting a LOT harsher than it does in canon (which is already pretty strong) and Grian's chances of getting help would be,,,, severely diminished, oughhhhgh

I really like your analysis of MK1's storyline, specifically with Bi-Han. I totally agree that there are some significant plot holes and missing context in the story. Bi-Han in particular seemed weird to me I guess? His betrayal just stood out as really weird to me.

Like, there should have been more build up or something. Idk, maybe it was obvious to everyone but me, but his betrayal actually caught me off guard. I even thought it was a fake-out till he injured Kuai.

(I just don't know why Bi-Han would expect Kuai to go along with Shang Tsung. Even if Bi-Han believed his brothers would stick by him over Liu Kang, there's no way he would have thought they'd team up with Shang Tsung, right? Kuai Liang is honorable and someone who protects the weak. He'd never put up with Shang Tsung's and Quan Chi's atrocities.)

I just really want some more backstory. I need to see his perspective. Especially regarding the accident that killed the previous Grandmaster.

Another Thing

Bi-han genuinely seems to regret Sindel's death but still broke out Shao?? His lines with both Mileena and Kitana seem contradictory at times (although that could just be because the conversations take place at different points in time).

Is Bi-han blind to the evil acts his "partners" have done and will do, or does he just not care? If he just doesn't care, I'm really confused at how he turned out so different from his brothers because both of them seem to be very compassionate.

I could go on but this is long enough as it is.

You are asking ALL the right questions.

MK1 Bi-Han is ambitious, impulsive, and above all, arrogant. I wouldn't be surprised if Bi-Han was so confident in his decision to betray Earthrealm that he thought he could convince Kuai Liang and Tomas to follow him.

And the "accident" thing is so funny to me. Was it a car crash? Did he fall down the stairs? Buried in an avalanche? Who knows.

Bi-han probably doesn't regret Sindel's death, but he does sympathize with Mileena and Kitana. He strikes me as the "ends justify the means" type of guy. Although he feels the sisters' pain, he's still doing what he has to in order to accomplish his goals. That would mean breaking Shao out of prison... benefits him in some way? Maybe he just wanted to make some noise in order to distract everybody from his shenanigans.

He told Tomas that their mother would "applaude" his actions. To me, that seems like he was closer to their mother than he was to their father. Maybe she is the reason he doesn't see the honor in serving Earthrealm. Maybe she would tell him, "You're destined for more than serving Liu Kang. You will lead the Lin Kuei to greatness."

So other than Bi-Han being a mama's boy, we know nothing about her. It could be possible that she thought Liu Kang was holding the Lin Kuei back and led Bi-Han to think the same way. Not a very evil backstory, but a decent explanation as to why he's so different from his brothers.

Don't get me wrong, I love it when a character is evil for evil's sake. But a character like Bi-Han needs more depth to explain his motivations.

Tldr: Bi-Han has a heart, but he's also hot-headed and will do anything to get what he wants.

Why can't I bring this same energy to my English Lit class like come on brain

HOFAS Review (+ a stream of consciousness...)

With a full 24 hours to sit with finishing HOFAS I have some thoughts and will likely sit with all of it a while longer to make all that I'm thinking coherent...

TLDR: I didn't like this book. I thought it was an unprecedented miss from SJM. If that take might upset you, please, ignore me! I'm genuinely really, really happy if after two years folks felt like this was a huge win. Genuinely.

But the broad strokes are:

I was a CC girl. I saw a lot of folks had a hard time with CC2 and I think I was in the camp of "actually, mostly liked it, but def ballooned by the last 200 pages (which were fire)." I love CC1. CC in particular was the series to finally convince me to start recruiting my friends into the SJM world. Over two years me and my friends are closer than ever, reading all kinds of fantasy. It's my fave thing in the world. But, other than ACOTAR 1, this is probs the only book of hers I actively dislike. It's firmly slotted CC into my third place for all of her series when it used to rank 2nd.

I've seen a lot of folks frame it as: you're disappointed because it wasn't ACOTAR, this was a book for the theorists, you spent two years overhyping what this could be, etc. I suppose I accept the last point to some extent. I came into this book a bigger fan of CC than of the whole of ACOTAR... I genuinely wanted Crescent City, not ACOTAR. And, if this account is any evidence, I am a big theory girlie. This was a hastily written, chaotically paced, surface level mess that kept itself afloat with gratuitously long infodumps. My love of theories did me no favors (I got a lot of things right) and I realized that because there was no emotional connection in this book the "wins" felt completely lackluster. For a book that deals in quite a bit of soul talk... it felt soulless.

This book misses what SJM really excels at as an author - incredible characterization. She might have a cast of 10 people, but we know all of them, love all of them. The absolutely batshit plots that have been layered over 15 books are always grounded, bolstered, and absorbed through symbiosis via her characters. The way I can, 24 hours later, barely remember plot points is completely attributed their lack of emotional connection to the characters themselves.

For ex, the entire resolution of the Avallen plot and the Flynn siblings earth magic freak out would have had so much more emotional impact if we a) knew Tristan's sister better b) cared about this location that yes we've theorized about but had only just arrived at (and mostly experienced via cave). So it was really written as this moment of catharsis - after some of the most overt, unrelenting info plot dumps for pages on end - that felt unearned.

Essentially, this was almost 900 pages of exclusively plot. And I'm actually so sad that this is effectively goodbye to the leads of this story because, despite spending 900 pages with them, I feel like I barely saw them. It's part of the reason why my fave part of CC3 are the bonus chapters. They're just moments to actually spend with our characters, be reminded of their personalities, their connections, and what they'd do in moments of stillness, weirdness, or kind of perfect mundanity. That atmospheric joy was always one of my favorite parts of falling for the CC crew.

Anyway, for the folks who are like sorry this is for the theorists... I hope this is the last time we get a book like this then. As someone who loves this - not just for SJM books but for all the fantasy series I read - world building without a strong foundation of character is not actually good writing. And this was bad writing - plain and simple. This felt like a checklist. And the glaring quality differences of each of the book's three parts, along with SJM's admission that this version of CC3 was a 5 week rewrite, leads me to believe a lot of this book was like SJM writing herself out of a corner. A means to an end. Also, I've never caught typos in an SJM work and... I caught a lot. Also why did we switch POVs like we were being held at gun point (I wont even get into the Tharion and Ithan of it all).

After that huge reveal in CC2, this book was always gonna be a massive thing to live up to. It needed to lay down so much groundwork for all the worlds, all the future books, to be able to play with. And that mission became of primary importance over the people and the world itself. There were too many plots, far too many characters, and we spent the entire time in what felt like "the future possibility" instead of taking a look around and sending off this main plotline and hanging out for a bit.

At one point I texted my SJM groupchat, all of whom are equally dismayed, like this book is essentially 4 infodump coversations and then every character going and telling 4 more characters that conversations and so on. And inexplicably we had to be present for every instance.

I celebrate the Lidia plotline from this book - the most emotional and satisfying (I still think it could have been done even better). Of course there were sprinklings of other things that were great fun. I read it fast in true SJM fashion. I think I'm only harsh because I only grade the queen against herself... and there were just countless times where I thought, "Sarah you're so much better than this... what am I even reading?"

Anyway, I guess I'm glad to put this chapter to rest. I'm excited for the future of ACOTAR and can only hope she employs the lessons she learned while writing ACOSF (a book with a ton of heart). Also, obviously delighted by the really strong focus on TOG easter eggs for whatever future that might entail (give me Manorian... please Sarah).

I think I'll just need to be in mourning for another second. And tbh, it may be light's out on the desire to ever write a brainstorm theory post ever again. Sad! But also not a big deal in the slightest.
