I wanna do age headcanons cus im bored:
i’ll start with kids (also including the adult ages too, so adding 25 years)
Lark and Sparrow- just barely turned 12 before the realms. they would be 37 in s2.
Grant- turned 13 also very recent before the realms. he sometimes forgets he’s 13 and says he’s 12. this is just a way for me to justify him saying he’s 13 during for knights. he would be 38 in s2.
Nick- i wanna say he’s the oldest but that’s just me projecting. i’m saying he turned 14 in the realms. im saying glenn was in prison on his birthday and nobody remembered but him. okay- he would be 39 in s2
Tj- 12 going on 13. idk i like making tall people really young it’s fun to me. he would be 37 as well in s2.
idk they’re all like junior high age.
Dads:
Henry- 39. mainly because of the whole 20 years since he saw his dad. i’m saying he just rounded up one year. (physically like 20 but dresses his age.)
Darryl- pretty sure he’s canonically 37. since he broke his arm when he was 36 and matt said that was last year.
Glenn- Canonically 36 at the start, 54 at the end. Meth Bay Prison Blues you will always be famous to me.
Ron- 45. making him the same age of my mom. he was born in 1974 according to me. that way willy dies in the 80s.
Teens (pretty self explanatory):
Scary- 16, sophomore age idk
Normal- also 16
Link- 17. is a year older since he was homeschooled.
Taylor- Anywhere between 16 and 19. the whole thing with him being 19 is really funny but i think he’s just 16. i’ll probably make jokes about it later.
Hermie- was 2
Odads-
Willy- died at 56. Im assuming he was around 9 in Atmod. i’m also assuming ron was about 12 when willy died. willy would have died in 1986, making him 56.
Barry- 60. he’s still aging. he had henry kinda young cause cmon- he lives in a forest and runs a cult-
Bill- had glenn around 32. died when glenn was 15. im making him carry on the live fast die young gene. died at 47. i think it’s fun if glenn outlives him. [christine is much older than him. (10 years) and i’m happy about that]
Frank- Really atmod messes with the timeline so much 😭 he would’ve had to be born in 1940. darryl was born in 1982, which already makes frank 42, which isn’t that bad. at 18 years to that for the college stuff, frank died at 60- which actually lines up with darryl quite well, since matt made a joke about darryl likely not living past 60. THEM FAMILY GENES!!!
and for the spouses just assume about the same age as them. i’m not writing more🤭
oh and hero is 18

Watering the Andi Mack fandom with my obscure headcannons and waiting for the fans to return like wildlife to the forest
- TJ loves cartoons. He loves She Ra and Steven Universe but he also watches OLD cartoons. He just loves cartoons and when Cyrus introduces him to fandom space he lurks like it’s the daily newspaper.
- Cyrus thinks the word boyfriend sounds SO nice and he says it any chance he gets. TJ of course thinks it’s really cute and doesn’t mind at all.
- Iris thought that Cyrus just didn’t like her, which she was super bummed about but okay with. So when she runs into Cyrus and TJ at the next renaissance fair, it’s a little bit healing for her. I think their agreement to be friends becomes a little more viable this time and they start hanging out regularly.
- Jonah deserves to be a part of the Good Hair Crew and the way they tell him is by coyly being like wow Jonah your hair looks great today…great..? You might even say good. And he is just like “I thought great was better than good”
- aromantic Jonah Beck aromantic Jonah Beck aromantic Jonah Beck
- TJ drops the jock thing after freshmen year of high school and starts dressing more polished, coupled with the fact that he now needs glasses. Come on, no one has a consistent style throughout their ENTIRE high school years.
- TJ and Cyrus are the couple that makes it, I know it I just know it. Anytime they have a fight or argument that they need to figure out Cyrus pulls out his binder and walks them through it by talking to himself in third person. “Now, Cyrus how does that make you feel? —…WELL BAD.”
- The Kippen siblings don’t even realize they are dating the same person basically until Iris and Cyrus become good friends again and then Amber and TJ just watch in horror as they OFTEN say the same thing at the same time.
- Cyrus did a whole grand promposal the day before TJ’s grand promposal so they had two
- Andi and Buffy have been in love since season 2 but they take until their senior year of high school to realize and actually start dating, everyone is relieved, especially Cyrus who had to help Andi through thinking she must just have a crush on [checks notes] every boy Buffy has dated

Embry’s body ached in places they hadn’t ached in years. He groaned slightly, stretching his arms out in front of him as the joints popped loudly. He was sore, he was tired, and he was hungry. As much as he wanted to sleep, he needed food far more. Working a double patrol was not something commonly heard of amongst the group – so, it’s safe to say Leah and Seth were a little more than surprised when Embry had joined them the previous night to run their shift around the border.
In all honesty, Embry hadn’t thought too much about it. Jacob hardly ever asked anyone for favours, let alone Embry. But lord knows he had asked for plenty. Seeing no reason to say no, Embry agreed to the extra shift and called in sick to his job for the night. As unhappy as Dan had been about it, he allowed it.
His fingers worked aimlessly, pulling a clean bowl from the dishwasher and loading it high with Ainsley’s sugary sweet cereal. After digging through the heaping pile of dirty utensils in the sink, Embry found a spoon big enough for his appetite, cleaned it thoroughly and wandered into the living room with his breakfast.
Once seated on the couch, he propped his feet up on the coffee table – something Ainsley usually never allowed – and flipped the television on. He searched for something while he shovelled spoonfuls into his mouth, pausing momentarily to watch the headline on one of the local news channels circulate across the screen.
𝑻𝑯𝑹𝑬𝑬 𝑴𝑶𝑹𝑬 𝑭𝑶𝑼𝑵𝑫 𝑫𝑬𝑨𝑫 𝑰𝑵 𝑺𝑬𝑨𝑻𝑻𝑳𝑬
Embry sighed; it was difficult trying to find the remaining nomads in the area. He knew fully well that they were preying on humans in other cities, that the odds of them returning to the reservation were slim to none. That typically infuriated Embry, moreso when Jacob dismissed his futile efforts in trying to convince the pack they should go to Seattle to try and hunt them, rather than wait for them here. While it seemed like a practical idea, Jacob had also pointed out that the forest to city ratio was leaning in favour of the latter, which would make finding and killing them more difficult.
They were unable to cause any real damage while in human form, but were also unable to wander the streets openly.
Embry placed the empty bowl on the table, swinging his legs over onto the couch as he belched and settled into the cushions. With being unable to be home over the last few weeks, Embry had decided it would be best for Ainsley if she stayed at Jennie’s. He couldn’t decide if leaving her alone was any better than sticking her with her family. If he came for her, he’d surely kill the others, too.
Jennie. TJ. Travis.
Trent.
Leah, however, seemed less pessimistic than Embry and had seconded the idea. It brought them more peace in mind to know where they were, and that they were together when neither Leah nor Embry could be around. It had been a few days since Ainsley had slept in their bed, and her absence made Embry feel less at home.
He pulled his phone from his pocket, staring at the illuminated screen that showed a photo of the pair making silly faces in their ugly christmas sweaters – his home screen featured a photo of their matching Halloween costumes. He had gone as Danny and she had gone as Sandy. Embry wore a leather jacket and a tight fitted pair of black jeans with his hair (prior to the accidental buzz Ainsley had given him) slicked back. She wore a homemade Pink Ladies jacket, paired with a cropped white tank and leather leggings.
He let his eyes close, only momentarily, the weight of his exhaustion finally creeping up on him.
The sound of a car door slamming from outside the front door brought him back; he slowly opened his eyes, a growl rising in his chest as he turned his head towards the television and read the time – 2:38 PM . Well fuck , he thought as he sat up, I guess I was out longer than I thought.
He had barely gotten the chance to remove the eye sleepies before Jacob barged through the door, “Dude, what the fuck?” Embry grumbled, rubbing his fists against his eyes. “Close the damn door, it’s freezing -”
“Embry, we need to talk.” He said firmly, slamming the door shut behind him. Embry paused his movements and watched Jacob as he began to pace back and forth in their living room uneasily.
His face was pulled together and tight. Like he had something to say, he just didn’t know how to say it. Like it left a bad taste in his mouth. He’d wander just into the hallway towards the kitchen before he’d come back and pass the television to stop short of the recliner Embry’s mom left behind. Jacob’s arms were folded, his hand covering his mouth every so often.
After about sixty seconds, Embry rolled his eyes and slumped back into the couch. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” he grumbled, almost exasperated. “I just – I need to make sure I’m doing the right thing.”
Embry watched his alpha pace again, only stopped every so often to place his hands on his hips and stare down at him. He half expected Jacob to just say something at some point, and was fully prepared for it to be completely stupid and not worth disturbing his sleep. “Don’t you always do the right thing?” He asked, cracking his knuckles.
“This is different,” Jacob sighed, letting his head fall back. “This is about loyalty and family and –”
Embry raised his brow, lifting his eyes just enough to watch Jacob’s face contort again. “Somethings really eating you up, huh?”
“Emb –”
“Jake, just spit it out. Not to be rude, and I’m going to be rude – I’m fucking tired and you’re kinda being annoying.” Jacob collapsed onto the couch next to his brother; Embry sighed and leaned forward on his elbows, “So, either you say something or you get out of my face. Please.”
𝙹𝚊𝚌𝚘𝚋
Jacob pressed his lips together and inhaled deeply. The part of him that wanted to protect his cousin was screaming somewhere in the back of his mind. She was his family. His duty was to protect her – even if it meant lying to the pack. He had considered it. Considered having people fill his shift, even considered having a meeting to address that the nomad issue no longer threatened the reservation and therefore seemed useless to have his pack strain themselves.
No one would have to know what he knew. Eventually, it would come out. And when it did, it was possible that the Cullen’s could take complete responsibility for Maddox’s presence. No one would have to know. He wouldn’t have to preoccupy himself with other thoughts because he physically was unable to think about anything other than Ainsley and Maddox and what road lay ahead.
On the flip side, he thought about Embry.
Embry was his brother. Ainsley had been absent for so many years, and their relationship came through blood. Blood may be thicker than water, but Embry had been there for Jacob. Despite not liking Bella, despite being a complete asshole, he had earned Jacob’s respect – and Jacob respected Embry enough to not let something as big as this slip past him.
He feared that his brothers would question his loyalty and decision making should they ever find out.
Despite everything Carlisle and Jasper had said, Maddox was still a nomad vampire, that had fed on humans, that could still pose a very dangerous threat to the tribe and the townspeople.
“I can’t choose,” he said finally, shaking his head. “She’s my family, and I love her, I really really do.”
“Who?”
“Ainsley.”
Jacob watched Embry’s face carefully. Several different emotions crossed his face, never able to cling to one. Worry pulled his brows together and pulled his lips taunt, “What about her? What’s wrong?”
𝙴𝚖𝚋𝚛𝚢
“Maddox is residing with the Cullen’s.”
Embry almost had to ask Jacob to repeat himself – because for a moment, it sounded like Jacob had just informed him that the nomad vampire that had previous relations with his girlfriend was living with the one family he couldn’t touch. That the one vampire he had dreams of tearing into pieces was within walking distance and no one had even known.
He wasn’t sure if he should be angry at himself or at the Cullen’s.
“Emb.” Jacob turned to look at his brother fully, “Ainsley is the one who brought him there.”
He blinked, his face releasing all tension. “That’s not funny.” He snorted, standing on his two feet to bring his bowl into the kitchen. Embry shook his head, his lips pulling into a smile, half expecting Jacob to start laughing with him. When he didn’t, he pulled his brows together again. “That’s not funny.” He repeated, this time a little harder.
If Jacob was playing some sort of sick, practical joke on Embry, now was the time to say ‘haha’.
Jacob stood slowly, his eyes carefully watching the tremors vibrate Embry’s chest. “Emb,” He said quietly, firmly. “Ainsley’s been hiding him.”
His voice broke around her name, “Ainsley?”
Jacob nodded.
The glass bowl shattered instantly under the pressure of his palms, leaving the ceramic in a billion tiny pieces on their living room floor. Embry’s shoulders heaved with each breath he took, the shaking pulling a loud growl through his chest.
There were many emotions Embry had mastered over the years - loneliness had been one of them. When Ainsley had come into his life and fully welcomed him with open arms, Embry thought he’d never feel anything other than happy for the rest of his life. He had never expected his other half to help aid and bed a vampire. Another emotion Embry had grown accustomed to was disappointment: for weeks, he had been trying to push the thought from his mind. That reliving the Bella-Edward-Jacob painfest was a possibility between he and Ainsley and Maddox. Disappointment because he believed her every time she promised him everything would be okay – he knew why, now.
It wasn’t easy to admit defeat for Embry, but what was he to do? He couldn’t kill Maddox now – as much as he wanted to, there was no way he was making it near the Cullen household without one or more of them putting him down.
There was a very large part of him that wanted Jacob to be wrong. More than anything, he wanted Jacob to be lying. His feet moved without consent; Embry found himself darting to his front door, breaking the wood from the hinges as he pulled it open. He didn’t even bother with his pants, didn’t bother with his boots – his body convulsed roughly, the heat scorching his spine and shoulders as he fell to the forest floor with a loud snarl and exploded into the part of him he had grown with the most.
His paws pushed him forward, ignoring the presence of every other brother’s worry and question that flooded his mind. Embry was fully aware that crossing the lands without general permission was frowned upon; the Cullen’s agreed to stay off their territory so long as the wolves stayed off theirs.
Today, Embry didn’t care.
Today, Embry had his own agenda.
𝙰𝚒𝚗𝚜𝚕𝚎𝚢
The snow fell outside the Cullen household slowly and gently as I sighed in frustration for the umpteenth time. Over the last few weeks, I stopped viewing Maddox as a chore. At some point, we had moved past what had happened. I had never fully forgiven him for what he played part of, but could live with the decision he made to become a monster, I suppose. There were questions I had that would be left unanswered for quite some time, and I couldn’t be bothered to push. I became so incredibly drained both mentally and physically, I could barely stand on my own two feet.
Edward handed her a mug of steaming liquid; in the last two weeks, Edward and I had been working on our differences. Part of me constantly wanted to thank him, for forcing Embry to tell me. While unconventional, I was still certain I had him to thank. The other part of me wanted to punch him in the nose, but I was aware that my hand probably wouldn’t win that battle.
Maddox and Jasper were outside, doing whatever it was that Jasper was good at. They had gotten particularly close since his arrival at the Cullen home – not that I minded. It meant he spent less time bugging me and more time occupying himself.
“Why aren’t you home with Embry?” Edward asked quietly, settling into the opposite end of the couch awkwardly.
I cocked my brow, looking sideways at him. “We’re not attached at the hip. I do have a life outside of him.”
Edward pursed his lips and sighed. “Wish Renesmee had that mindset.” He mused, staring at the floor, “Hardly even bothers trying to talk to anyone anymore, just wants to see Jacob.”
I smiled, trying to hide it behind the red mug, “They’re besties,” I reminded him, stifling a yawn, “get used to it.”
We spent the better part of the following twenty minutes in silence; neither of us felt the need to talk much, just simply enjoyed the silence. I learned the hard way that Edward could read my mind – and regardless of how unsettling it was, it proved useful. He knew when I was uncomfortable, when Maddox wasn’t going to be in control – he always made use of it by stepping in whenever he seemed fit.
“Embry?”
I looked over at Edward, his face pulled together.
There was a loud growl, followed by a boom and crack.
We stared at each other briefly before Edward disappeared, leaving me sitting in the living room alone. I rushed to the window, looking down into the white abyss of what they called a backyard. Maddox stood on one end of the clearing, snow littering his hair – on the opposite end, a large gray wolf crouched low and snarled. Just by the rigid posture and bared teeth, I knew Embry had come for Maddox and was solely intent on killing him.
Shit.
I bolted after Edward, jumping down the flights of stairs. Edward stood next to Jasper, Jasper yelling something about keeping control. “We have a treaty, Knight.” He reminded him, observing Maddox halt his movements and watch Embry in defeat.
Embry took this as his cue.
“No!” I shouted, watching Embry’s shoulder ram into the nomad’s body. Maddox went flying backwards into the bushes, his grunt echoing off the trees. I darted over to where Embry stood – having only seen him in this form twice before – and placed my hands on either side of his snout. “Embry, stop.” I whispered desperately, trying to force the wolf to look at me.
He growled, staring past me to where the vampire had disappeared.
“Embry, please –”
“Ainsley, get out of the way.” Edward demanded while taking a slow, cautionary step forward.
I shook my head, looking over my shoulder to where Maddox emerged from the forest. His eyes had darkened, his jaw was taut and squared. If I weren’t incredibly sure Maddox was a unicorn in a daredevils body, he might have actually been terrifying.
Scratch that, he was definitely terrifying. And as much as I didn’t want Embry hurting Maddox, I didn’t want Maddox – or anyone else, for the matter – hurting Embry. The cold wind bit at my cheeks, eliciting a hiss from my mouth. I was being careless.
When the wolf moved forward, I dragged my feet back, bracing myself against Maddox’s body. “Embry, don’t do this.” I pleaded, pressing a hand to his muzzle. “You’re better than this, don’t do this.”
I was only met with another growl.
At a loss, unsure if I would be able to reason sense into my wolf, I turned and looked up at Maddox. “Run.” I instructed; when he failed to move, or make eye contact with me, I placed my hands on his chest and gripped his coat, “Maddox, I said run.”
The next few moments happened very quickly; Edward’s face morphed into shock, dashing forward once realization had crossed his mind. My back crashed against the side of the deck forcing the wind from me, falling down onto my left shoulder where an audible crack echoed through the air. I couldn’t find my voice to scream – I couldn’t find the willpower to get up. Instead I lay there, sunken five inches deep into the snow, my arm bent backwards behind me as I struggled to find air to pull into my lungs.
Embry towered over Maddox now; his muzzle pulled back over his teeth, his large paw pressed firmly into his chest as a familiar russet wolf nudged him roughly, trying to knock him backwards.
No avail.
Jacob whined loudly, looking over his shoulder at me, bringing Embry’s attention with him. Edward kneeled in front of me, mumbling something about a dislocation. He tried pulling me upright, apologizing meekly when I cried out in pain and shut my eyes.
You will not cry, you will not cry.
The pain radiated from my shoulder into my back. I could move my arm, but something was definitely not right – not where it should have been. “It needs to be pushed back into place.” Edward said quickly, looking up at Jacob – a human Jacob – as he buttoned up the pair of jeans Jasper had tossed him. “I can’t do it, I’ll break her bones.”
𝙴𝚖𝚋𝚛𝚢
Embry swallowed the lump in his throat. He hadn’t meant for it to be as forceful as it was. He had only meant to push her to the side with his paw, just to move her out of the way so he wouldn’t hurt her when he finally lunged for Maddox – he hadn’t intended on sending her flying twenty feet and into concrete.
He pulled the band of the sweatpants around his hips, standing behind Jacob at the deck. Ainsley sat in a pile of snow, her bare arms shaking visibly, her lips trembling while the others tended to her. Embry almost wanted to blame Maddox – almost wanted to say everything he wanted to say the entire run here, but kept quiet instead.
Embry and Ainsley would not get mixed up in a love triangle because Embry was certain Ainsley did not love Maddox; when Ainsley tried profusely to prevent Embry from doing what he wanted most (which she had been fully aware of for weeks now), something inside him snapped. That instantaneous feeling of isolation and loneliness sunk back into his bones: the one person he had assumed would always be on his side, had just forced him to question her loyalty.
Ainsley whined.
He wanted to comfort her, but his mind raced back to the bruises he had left before. The guilt washed over his shoulders, and pulled him down onto his knees. New thoughts circled around his mind: you can’t be with her because you can’t keep yourself from hurting her.
“What were you thinking?” Edward hissed angrily, holding Ainsley’s arm steady as Jacob used his palm to press against her shoulder blade, sliding it back into place.
Ainsley screamed.
“I didn’t mean to – I told her to move!”
“She couldn’t hear you, Embry!” Jacob growled, wrapping an arm around his cousin's shoulder, holding it in place as he pulled her arm forward to pop loudly.
Ainsley whimpered, tears streaming down her face.
“Ains, honey –” Embry croaked, watching Jacob and Edward pull her to her feet carefully, trying not to move the left side of her body unnecessarily. They maneuvered past him, carrying her over the steps and into the house. He wasn’t entirely sure if he was welcome inside - that wouldn’t stop him from carrying his hollow body up the stairs after them and into the living room two floors up.
Jacob settled her on the couch, using his thumb to wipe the excess tears from her cheeks. “It’ll be okay,” he cooed, rubbing his large hand over her spine comfortingly, “we got you.” His alpha turned to look over his shoulder at him, lips pressed into a tight line.
Obviously not impressed with Embry. At all.
“Jake,” he started, watching his alpha stand tall now, moving towards him quickly. “I didn’t mean it –”
Jacob’s right fist collided with the side of Embry’s jaw, knocking him backwards the slightest bit. He moved to face Jacob again, slowly bringing his hand up to caress his chin.
Jacob punched Embry again.
And again.
And again.
After the fourth hit, Embry found himself on his hands and knees, trying to breathe through the tremors. He would not let the animal win, he would not put Ainsley in any other sort of danger. The last thing anyone in this household needed was Embry and one of his temper tantrums.
“I deserve that.” He said in defeat, sitting upright with his palms on his thighs. The blood trickled from his mouth – or nose, he wasn’t sure which – and the right half of his face throbbed tenderly. Ainsley watched the pair in silence, her face skewered in disdain. “Ainsley, I’m sorry –”
“Don’t.”
Jacob turned to look at her now, the evident shock written clear across every face in the room. This was the part where Ainsley was supposed to say, ‘ Don’t apologize, you didn’t mean it ’. Instead, Embry’s stomach twisted uneasily.
Edward tightened the strap on her sling, his amber hues watching Embry carefully. “Ainsley, Embry really didn’t mean –”
“Don’t defend him.” She snapped, her blue hues narrowing. “He didn’t come here looking to kill anybody for any other reason other than his fucking jealousy – and look at what happened.”
“No one's dead?” Jacob offered optimistically
“No, but I am fucking immobile and won’t be able to do my job.” She shot back, glaring over to where Embry sat. “You’re aware this doesn’t happen in normal relationships, right? Insecurity and jealousy, yeah – but this?”
“We’re not exactly normal.” He mumbled, looking down at the floor.
“Not an excuse, Embry.”
This time, Embry winced. “I know.”
Edward stood, placing a hand on Jacob’s shoulder, “We should go check on Maddox.” He mumbled quietly, the pair leaving Embry and Ainsley alone in the living room.
Ainsley pulled her feet under her body, wincing slightly as she readjusted. They sat in silence for a while, neither of them not really knowing what to say or where to start. But not talking was killing him - they had sat in silence a great number of times, but none had ever been this uncomfortable.
“Jacob told me – about Maddox being here.” He started, wiping the blood off his chin with the back of his hand. “And as soon as I knew that, I wanted to come here and take him out. Because he was the one nomad that had personal ties to you, and that made me worry about your safety all the time. Everytime you left for work, every time you drove alone – I couldn’t shake this feeling that he was going to come up out of nowhere and take you from me.”
Ainsley blinked, raising a brow, “And then?”
Embry sighed, “And then Jacob told me you were the one that brought him here.”
“He asked to be here.”
“But you brought him. You helped him. You knew how important finding him was to me and instead of just talking to me, you lied. For weeks.”
“Just talking to you?” She asked, leaning forward, “Embry, how was I supposed to talk to you about that? Go ahead, tell me exactly how that conversation was going to go. Because if you think it would’ve went smoother than this, you might be delusional.”
“I didn’t say that –”
“What was I supposed to say?” Her voice was rising with each word, “‘Hey Embry, I know you totally hate him and on some level for whatever reason are completely threatened by him being here, but we’re going to be cool with Maddox and help him out?’ That wasn’t going to fly.”
Embry sighed, rubbing his temples slowly as his head dropped into his hands, “No.”
“Then what?”
“Who even is he?” He asked suddenly, looking up at her with hard eyes. “You spent all this time helping him. If he wasn’t important to you, you wouldn’t have lied to me –”
“I didn’t lie –”
“You didn’t exactly tell me the truth, either!” He growled. “So, who is he?”
“You don’t get to know.”
“Why?”
Ainsley laughed once, shaking her head angrily. “Because you don’t get to know, Embry. All of this is because of your insecurity in this relationship. I believe that you love me, but you seem to have a hard time trusting me when I say I love you, too. Maddox isn’t a threat to me, and he isn’t a threat to you –”
“Why are you defending him?”
“Because it’s not normal to want to kill people, Embry. It shouldn’t be important to find him –”
“Look at it from my perspective.” He interrupted, holding his arms across his chest. “Some random dude shows up in town, someone you very obviously had no interest in talking to. Trenton had made it clear he wasn’t good company – so, I had made my opinion on him very clear – supernatural aside. As a person, I’m not his biggest fan, because you aren’t his biggest fan. Him being the one thing my blood is literally programmed to kill was just a bonus.”
“See, that’s what I mean. That’s not normal – that doesn’t get to be a bonus.”
“Why not?”
“You don’t get it.” Ainsley let her head fall back against the couch, blowing out her frustration. “And if you can’t get it, then I can’t do this with you.”
Embry paused. His eyes focused on her face, watching each detail carefully, trying to determine the exact meaning of her words and whether or not she meant them. He waited for her lips to threaten a smile, waited for her cheeks to flush under his gaze – and after several moments, he started listening for her heartbeat.
Smooth and steady.
Embry felt the first tug at his heartstring, and then another. In the next five seconds, his heart felt as though it were shrinking, physically causing his chest to tighten and his stomach to flip uneasily. He anticipated that she would be angry with him, sure. He deserved that. He expected that she would call him childish, and foolish – again, he deserved that.
But Embry Call had not expected the one person on this planet he loved more than anything else to decide he was not worth fighting for.
You were never good enough of a man for her.
Embry felt the heat slowly release and disappear; suddenly he was freezing. His bare arms and chest erupted in goosebumps, his heart sinking into the pit of his stomach as he repeated it over and over in his mind:
You aren’t good enough.
You can’t be what she needs.
You’ll never come back from this.
Embry’s hands trembled, not in anger, but in sadness. He brought them to his face and tried to look anywhere but her eyes.
A lot had happened to Embry over the last decade: he turned into a giant dog. He found someone he learned to genuinely love – and she broke his heart. His bones had been broken, he had been torn into shreds, he had recovered from everything he thought might break him and yet he stood, heartbroken with tears streaming down his cheeks in front of the person fate had decided was his forever.
And his forever couldn’t handle him.
His forever didn’t want him.
Couldn’t be with him because of who he was.
Embry wanted to change for the better, to be a better man for her. But he was certain there were parts to him he wouldn’t think he should have to change – that he could change. He controlled his temper (for the most part), came home at half-decent hours and always ensured the pantries were full and stocked with food.
But the part of him that wasn’t in his control, something that had to do with his biological DNA, was the part she disliked the most and it was the main reason why she still kept him at arm’s length. Maybe she had never intended on being his forever – maybe she only wanted to be his now.
Embry pursed his lips, his hands running down his face, simultaneously wiping the tears from his cheeks and eyes. He exhaled slowly, trying to calm himself before he bothered speaking. “If that’s what you want.” He whispered, completely defeated.
Ainsley didn’t respond. She tore her eyes from his and cleared her throat, looking down at the sling that her arm rested in. That was more than enough confirmation for him. Embry sniffled once, then stood and turned on his heels towards the stairway and shouldered past Jacob – who had been standing in silence behind him for God knows how long. Embry’s feet didn’t stop when he reached the forest – he didn’t phase, he didn’t let the animal take control. Instead he let the bitter air nip at his bare skin, feet dragged through the snow back in the general direction of the reservation.
It took Embry three hours to navigate his way home.
It took him another two before he landed on Emily’s couch, unable to speak or think. The pack gathered around him, offering him comfort and words of encouragement. This was his person – they were going to work it out. All he needed to do was remind her why she fell in love with him to begin with.
It wasn’t until the moon sat high in the sky that he decided to bring Ainsley the Jeep, hoping to utilize it as an excuse to talk to her. When he knocked on the door, it wasn’t Ainsley that answered. It was her brothers. If Embry hadn’t known any better, they could’ve almost passed for twins. When requesting to speak to Ainsley, Travis had plenty to say.
Embry wasn’t welcome at the Black-Johnson household for as long as Ainsley deemed necessary. That she had no interest in seeing or speaking with him. Travis ensured that she had been very clear: no form of contact whatsoever. No texts. No calls. No contact via a third party member.
It wasn’t until he closed the broken door to his house that Embry realized what exactly he had done, and what exactly he had lost.
His body no longer belonged to himself. Everywhere he looked, he was reminded of her. His heart would break all over again, pulling his chest painfully in all sorts of directions. His chest would tighten, he would struggle to breathe, and the only sort of relief was exerting his energy. His hands ripped at the photos lining the walls she picked out. He flipped the couch, he smashed the table into the television.
The Keurig he had purchased for Christmas flew across the kitchen into the dining room wall.
He could hear Jared and Seth outside.
As he made his way up the stairs, he knocked over every item on the steps between the railings. Glass covered the floor in the main hallway. His hands tore apart the sheets on the bed, tossing the shreds onto the floor. He used his lamp as a bat to smash the mirror on his wall, the blood was pounding in his ears as the heat finally returned to his body. He could barely hear the sound of his own breathing over the rushing in his body, his fist colliding with the back of his door four times before he ripped it off the hinges and turned to toss it down the stairs – narrowly missing Jared’s head.
“What did I do?” Embry cried loudly, rubbing his head roughly before he returned to punching holes along the wall.
What have I fucking done?

Masterpost masterpost
A masterpost of all my writing that has masterposts! I mostly run to fantasy, heavy on the character relationships and angst.
Long things:
Ruler and Empress - Probably my most popular, this starts rough but gets fleshed out rapidly. The monarch of a defeated nation contends with the cruel whims of their conqueror. Gilded cage, sadistic choices, vicarious punishment.
Illiam and Helis - Two old friends from university meet up on the opposite sides of a war. Fantasy bigotry, morally grey/sympathetic villain.
Galen and Everet - Set in the world of Dragon Age in the mage-templar war, a templar helps out a mage and deserts from his corrupt company. Sympathetic captor, drug addiction.
TJ and Danny - Set in Wildfae’s Pathverse, the handler of an oppressed telepath becomes disillusioned with his job. Sympathetic captor, institutionalised whump.
Consort Rill - My current WIP. The prince-consort of a nation in rebellion is taken captive and held hostage. Royalty AU, pirates.
First of the Hollow - Most recent piece. Our protagonist swears themselves in servitude to an ancient forest spirit, and bad times ensue. First person narration with body horror/gore.
Short things:
Torin - old disconnected pieces about a lost winged boy. Kept as a scientific curiosity, wing whump, sympathetic captor.
Dissonance - Fanfic for the book Ocean’s Echo, containing involuntary telepathy, forced mindlink, enemies to friends.
Keldin’s story - Angsty bodyguard/Prince romance, first person.

TJ's past:
A long time ago the jackson family had a kid named Tyson Jackson or TJ for short, He had a great life for a while, Until he kinda got older his father wanted to train his son to be a real giant just like the rest of them. But TJ was against that.
That made his father mad at him but still trying to force him to train him, But TJ's still against that. About few years later they had another kid named ocean who's a little girl and little sister of TJ's.
TJ and ocean liked each other. (In a sibling relationship) and they spend time with each other and as for that, and sometime later they went outside and went for a walk at the abandon forest and ocean found the cave that's been crumbled for a million years. TJ was very curious about it and went inside along with ocean, but then they saw a green glow and they went close to it.
And all the sudden the green glow starts to zap both TJ and ocean and the green glow disappears forever. It was a strange glow at first but then they felt weird and then at the flash moment they grew way bigger than all giants which surprised them in the unsuspecting way.
Ocean was scared at first because of that TJ tried to calm her down and telling her that it's ok, ocean calmed down after hearing his voice. She ask if she wanted to tell their parents about this.
TJ didn't trust thier dad so he had to tell thier mother about this, they tried to turn back to thier giant size but luckily it worked, they went back in the house and went to tell their mother about this.
Thier mon told them about the glow. It was the mega giant's soul of power. The mega giants went extinct years ago and now TJ and ocean are the last ones and part of their family, but she promise not to tell thier father about this or anyone.
The years went one for a long time and the dad was suspicious about TJ and ocean. But then the father spys on ocean and TJ sees them in a sharp pain like they can't hold thier giant selfs anymore and then they turned into mega giants.
It surprised the father and he revealed them selfs and he tried to tell him with that size he can make him the dangerous giant.
TJ growled at his dad after what he done to him and all the abused things he had done. Then they heard humans coming and TJ picked up Ocean and was running away from them. Thier father went straight to the humans and roared.
The mother was scared and so is ocean, there's no use for the humans. They're unstoppable and then they took down the father and goes after the mother. Then one of the humans saw TJ and was about shoot him.
The mother saw the human about to shoot him. She push him and got shot instead. Ocean and TJ was shocked about this. But then she tell them to run and hide. TJ and ocean didn't want to leave thier mother behind and they wanted to save her..
But it's already to late for that. They ran away and never looked back. Then they saw a portal and the two kids went in the portal and looked back what it's happened. TJ and ocean misses their home, they're now in a white void and was safe from the humans. TJ looked at ocean and was crying about their parent's death.
TJ promise himself to take care of his sister for as long as for mom's sakes...
The end....

SOOTHE also from tj!!
"Estas bien, calmate hijito - " Her words are soft and she knows it's far more the tone in which she says them than her actual words that are calming. In fact, had her words been said any other way, they would have pissed her off but regardless.
"Chido. Okay, here, you give me the answer to these second order differential equations - no cheating! Do them yourself." Sombra's expression is knowing - her own AI is extremely adept at finding answers through running things into her own highly advanced random forest algorithms and finding answers quickly. Perhaps not as accurately as she would like, but it could certainly find something approaching an answer.
"Bien. And you, focus on me." She took TJ's hands in her own, now that the AI in his head was distracted with other things. "Breathe. Slowly." She exemplified it; a trick stolen from an old friend who told her to try to try and center herself in the moment as much as she could. "Think about your favorite food. Favorite place. Something. Think about the way my hands feel in yours." Her cybernetic eyes glow a sharp magenta whilst she looks into his, but the sharpness is just in color; they have a fair amount of affection within.
"How do you feel?"

34. The House in the Cerulean Sea, by TJ Klune
Tumblr media
Owned: No, library Page count: 398 My summary: Linus Baker is a case worker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, assigned to orphanages to see that magical children are being properly cared for. Proper and by-the-book, he is assigned to a ‘problem’ orphanage on a remote island - an orphanage that hosts a female gnome, a wyvern, a forest sprite, a blob boy, a werewolf, and the literal antichrist. Linus is expecting the worst. But with every day that passes, Linus finds himself caring more and more for the odd family on the island, headed by mild-mannered Arthur Parnassus and Zoe the island sprite. And as time goes by, Linus begins to wonder if he has a life outside of paperwork... My rating: 4/5 My commentary:
This book comes very well-recommended. And it's entirely up my street. I mean, please, a book about a home full of magical children seen as strange by the world and facing a lot of prejudice, and the case worker who falls in love with them and their lives? That's got me written all over it. And it was a fun book! Very charming, very endearing. The kids were all delightful, the main character was interesting, and I loved the world this was set in. More under the cut!
Our protagonist is Linus Baker, a by-the-book case worker for the government's branch dealing with magical youth. He goes into orphanages, ensures everything's running as it should, then leaves. He doesn't have dreams or ambitions, he's just a drone. But on going to the island, he finds his humanity, and allows himself to desire. In general I like protagonists in this kind of fiction that aren't Hot Young Singles, so seeing this relatively mediocre middle-aged man was actually really interesting! And his romance with Arthur, the head of the orphanage, was sweet. They play very well off each other, you really get a sense for how deeply compatible these two men are. The kids are also a delight. Fundamentally they're all just weird kids with magic powers who don't much trust outsiders - my favourite was Chauncey, a blob-boy who really wants to be a bellhop. Why? Saw it in a movie once and became obsessed with the notion. Which is exactly how little kid special interests work.
Not only is the worldbuilding here interesting, it's also revealed in small doses or at natural times, such as Linus going over the Rules and Regulations or reading case files. Magical beings are a Thing in this world, and are an oppressed minority, with children being forced into orphanages or schools and often abused by their caretakers. The signalling is pretty clear - the See Something, Say Something posters mentioned to be all over the place are so reminiscent of the posters with the exact same slogan that are all over train stations targeting immigrants. But magical beings aren't exactly one metaphor. Arthur and Linus' status as gay men are also the metaphor, it's allegorically representing a broad spectrum of marginalised communities.
The biggest gripe I had with this book was that the stakes didn't feel all that high. The kids are shown to be capable, threats are dealt with reasonably quickly, and people warm up to the kids rapidly on meeting them. A few decide to hate them for what they are, but they're portrayed more as one-note bigots than anything else. I get the wider point the book was trying to make about prejudice and systemic inequality, and it's admittedly effective in showing how individuals are often powerless in the face of systemic prejudice, and how even systems that seem to be working well from an outside perspective can be rotten to the core. It's just simplistic in its worldview, which isn't by necessity that bad a thing, but I was hoping for a little more nuance.
Next up...come on, grab your friends.

Book Review Wolfsong (Green Creek Book 1 of 4) by T.J. Klung
TLDR go read this book. Seriously. Just go. Run to your local Barnes and Noble or Amazon and just buy it.
So the whole reason I even found out about the Furry Fandom is because of my love for Werewolves as a teenager. Werewolves are my jam. Gay werewolves are my peanut butter. There's one problem.
Most gay werewolf fiction is written by women. That on it's own is not a bad thing. But it also involves a lot of M-Preg. I'm not going to kink shame people who are into that but it's frustrating that the majority of gay werewolf fiction is all m-preg stuff. I get that the omega verse is popular but it gets old.
So when I realized this new author I was getting into had written a gay werewolf book, i was like fuck yeah. So I downloaded it and now Listened to the whole series audiobook style multiple times. I've listened to all 4 books at least 4 times. I have a problem.
Anyway, so the first book centers around Oxnard (Ox) Matheson. The book starts when Ox is a kid and he catches his dad packing to leave. The dad tells Ox he regrets everything in his life except Ox. He tells Ox he's a good kid even though he's a bit dumb and then leaves to never return. The next scene is Ox calling a guy named Gordo. Gordo is super important. We love Gordo. He's the asshole with a heart of gold. Gordo owns a garage in town that Ox's dad worked at. Ox calls Gordo and basically begs him for a job even though he's underage because they might loose the house otherwise. Gordo and his mom work out a deal where he can work for Gordo under the table and Gordo will pay his mom to help keep the bills up. It's hinted that Gordo pays Ox way more than he should so all the bills are caught up in a couple of months. Gordo also has a tendency to under charge for services if he knows his customer can't afford it. On top of that, also working for Gordo is Tanner, Chris and Rico. We also love these three because they are the comedic trio that keeps things light. The auto garage gang along with Ox's mom become his sort of family, helping him to deal with life and all that as he grows older.
Some weird stuff happens, like a mysterious creature that growls at him in the forest before running away and meeting a weird dude named Mark Bennet who scents the air a lot. But the big event is when he turns 16, he runs into a small boy who immediately takes a liking to him and starts asking why he smells like candy canes and pinecones. and epic and awesome. This is when Ox is introduced to the Bennet family. And as he gets closer to this family, he is told that the boy, his name is Joe, hadn't said anything for 15 months before meeting Ox that day because he was kidnapped and tortured.
I won't go into too much further detail because I don't want to spoil it. But this story has a lot of angst for a bit. So be prepared for that. There are two sex scenes at the end of the book when ox is in his mid 20's. But I love this book. With every fiber of my being. If you're a fan of found families, werewolves, a little bit of well deserved angst in the middle and a lot of random cuddling, then you will love this book. I also highly recommend the other books in the series as well. Also TJ Klung's other books are awesome too. They are for the most part queer supernatural stories. If you like more comedy themed books, the Tales from Verenia series is hilarious. These books make me cry happy tears and are just great examples of queer books written by queer people.

TJ Powar Has Something to Prove by Jesmeen Kaur Deo
When TJ Powar—a pretty, popular debater—and her cousin Simran become the subject of a meme: with TJ being the “expectation” of dating an Indian girl and her Sikh cousin who does not remove her body hair being the “reality”—TJ decides to take a stand.
She ditches her razors, cancels her waxing appointments, and sets a debate resolution for herself: “This House Believes That TJ Powar can be her hairy self, and still be beautiful.” Only, as she sets about proving her point, she starts to seriously doubt anyone could care about her just the way she is—even when the infuriating boy from a rival debate team seems determined to prove otherwise.
As her carefully crafted sense of self begins to crumble, TJ realizes that winning this debate may cost her far more than the space between her eyebrows. And that the hardest judge to convince of her arguments might just be herself.

Zyla & Kai by Kristina Forest
While on a school trip to the Poconos Mountains (in the middle of a storm) high school seniors, Zyla Matthews and Kai Johnson, run away together leaving their friends and family confused. As far as everyone knows, Zyla and Kai have been broken up for months. And honestly? Their break up hadn’t surprised anyone. Zyla and Kai met while working together at an amusement park the previous summer, and they couldn’t have been more different.
Zyla was a cynic about love. She’d witnessed the dissolution of her parents’ marriage early in life, and it left an indelible impression. Her only aim was graduating and going to fashion school abroad. Until she met Kai.
Kai was a serial monogamist and a hopeless romantic. He’d put a temporary pause on his dating life before senior year to focus on school and getting into his dream HBCU. Until he met Zyla.
Alternating between the past and present, we see the love story unfold from Zyla and Kai’s perspectives: how they first became the unlikeliest of friends over the summer, how they fell in love during the school year, and why they ultimately broke up… Or did they? Romantic, heart-stirring and a little mysterious, Zyla & Kai will keep readers guessing until the last chapter.
Empress Crowned in Red (Witches Steeped in Gold #2) by Ciannon Smart
Iraya, her revenge taken and magic unfettered, turns her sights on a bigger goal: freeing Aiyca for the Obeah. But first she must shed the guise of the rogue warrior and become the Lost Empress her people need.
Jazmyne has crowned herself the doyenne and is prepared to go to extreme lengths—and court ruthless danger—to prove to her people she deserves the throne.
But there is more at stake than Jazmyne or Iraya know: a new threat is awakening on the other side of the island that could destroy everything they’ve been fighting for. Trust is scarce, and betrayal a breath away. But Iraya and Jazmine once again find themselves turning to each other—after all, better the witch you know than the nightmare you don’t.
The Signs and Wonders of Tuna Rashad by Natasha Deen
Let’s be clear. No matter what her older brother, Robby, says, aspiring screenwriter Tuna Rashad is not “stupidstitious.” She is, however, cool with her Caribbean heritage, which means she is always on the lookout for messages from loved ones who have passed on. But ever since Robby became a widower, all he does is hang out at the house, mock Tuna for following in their ancestors’ traditions, and meddle in her life.
Tuna needs to break free from her brother’s loving but over-bearing ways and get him a life (or at least, get him out of hers!). Based on the signs, her ancestors are on board. They also seem to be on board with helping Tuna win over her crush, Tristan Dangerfield. The only hiccup? She has to do it before leaving for college in the fall. A ticking clock, a grief-stricken brother, and a crush who doesn’t believe in signs. What could possibly go wrong?
If You Still Recognise Me by Cynthia So
Elsie has a crush on Ada, the only person in the world who truly understands her. Unfortunately, they’ve never met in real life and Ada lives an ocean away. But Elsie has decided it’s now or never to tell Ada how she feels. That is, until her long-lost best friend Joan walks back into her life.
In a summer of repairing broken connections and building surprising new ones, Elsie realises that she isn’t nearly as alone as she thought. But now she has a choice to make…

I've heard a lot of TJ Klune this year and he's been on just about ever 'must read' list I've seen, almost always The House in the Cerulean Sea. I found Under The Whispering Door first and the themes of that one appealed to me more. Even halfway through the year, The Whispering Door remains my most favorite book of 2022. But the writing, style, characterizations, and themes made me want to read more so The House in the Cerulean Sea was the obvious next choice.
I've mentioned before that fantasy/sci-fi/magic/supernatural/outside the relm of the real world (with the exception of vampires) are not really my thing. But I've also mentioned that I've been trying to branch out a little and try new things. Part of what TJ Klune-- and Adam Silvera in the past-- does that makes me as a reader feel comfortable about branching out is that it feels like real world with little magical hints. Outside of these key details, everything about the world he's built and the characters is just... normal. They love, work, feel, die. There isn't some great mythos you have to learn or subscribe to or a new world with politics and systems you have to learn. Not that there is anything wrong with those things either-- there's something special about watching an author build a whole new world from scratch. And there's a huge market for that-- but its a little daunting for someone like me. I want to dip my toe in, not jump in the deep end.
Under the Whispering Door was all about death and what happens after. The House in the Cerulean Sea in some ways is the complete opposite, in that it's about people outside of society's norms trying to live the best life they can... and people lost in the mundane repetitive everyday life trying to find something to live for. The book is about Linus Baker-- a quiet, lonely 40 year old man. His whole life is working for an organization who is charged with keeping track of magical beings. Linus is a case worker who spends his whole life going to orphanages for magical being and making sure they are cared for properly, closing down the one who aren't doing what they're supposed to do. He doesn't worry what happens to the children after he closes one down, that's for management. He doesn't get too close or build personal connections, because it could skew his opinions. Work is everything. There are no loves, no friends, no social life. The closest he has to a friend is his cat, who other than food seems not to care much whether he's there or not.
The insecure, angsty soul in me relates to Linus on so many levels. Early on in the book, it says: "He'd accepted long ago that some people, no matter how good their heart was or how much love they had to give, would always be alone." and "It was just that he felt... dimmer than others. Like he was faded... he wasn't meant to be seen."
In the book, The Extremely Upper Management assign Linus to a secret mission to go investigate a level 4 orphanage and more importantly the man running it, Arthur Parnassus. Everything is shroud in secrecy and heavily redacted files. The children there are different from any he has ever met before, and he's used to magical beings. A lady garden gnome, Talia, who is over 200 years old but still considered a child in her species; a forest sprite, Phee, who is distant and loves trees more than people; Sal, a skittish young boy who turns into a Pomeranian when frightened who has been through a lot in his young years; Theodore, a wyvern who values buttons more than gold and family even more than that; Chauncy, who no one knows what he is that wants nothing more than to be a bellhop (he tugged my my heartstrings so hard); and the one who terrifies everyone but his fellow orphans and caretakers, Lucy, a six year old antichrist child, capable of all the worst things but who loves music and cooking and cries when the nightmares of where he was born break through his mind.
At first, Linus is determined to keep his distance but its too hard to not fall for these little children who had been abandoned and forgotten by the rest of the world... and maybe how handsome and charming Arthur isn't doesn't hurt. Linus world before was nothing but grey and rain but here on the island is color and richness and the family Linus didn't realize he was missing. He bands with the island to change the minds of the residents of the island, the world, and the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth.
The characters are rich and well rounded, complicated and complex. They make you life and cry and hope for them in ways that is hard to find in most books. I will admit that after reading, I found some reviews on goodreads that weren't very flattering about what may have inspired the book. According to these reviews at some point TJ Klune mentioned reading the Sixties Scoop which was something that happened in Canada where indigenous children were taken from their homes and put into government-sanctioned schools, with the goal of white families to adopt them. As an American, I never learned about this and because I didn't find out until after I read, I haven't done any research about it. I would never pretend to know how horrific that must have been for generations of indigenous people or the lasting effects that resonate today. The reviews I read were not happy about him using something so horrific and turning it into a magical, whimsical tale. And I understand and don't judge those people for being offended... and I wanted to mention it in the review because I wouldn't want someone blindsided by it later. But I also wanted to voice that I didn't see it that way... fully admitting that I may not see it that way because I'm so far removed from the situation and its after-effects. For me, as a reader and a writer, often times ideas for a story come from unusual places; reading or watching something that moves us or enrages us, sparks an idea. There are plenty of dystopian style books that are written based off very scary things happening in the world or that have already happened and either reimagining them in a different setting, modernizing them, or imagining what would happen if they went to the extreme.
I personally think this book has themes that carry over into our lives right now-- about how people can be ostracized and isolated just for not being who we want them to be... not being exactly like us. In the book its magical, mutant-like children who grow into magical mutant-like adults... but it could be used as a metaphor for people of different races, genders, sexual preferences, religions; people with disabilities or ailments we can't understand, people who look different or think different or speak different or don't speak at all. Its about seeing past the differences to realize we're all human and we all hurt and cry and love, we all yearn for acceptance. to be wanted. The book talks about learning to accept and welcome everyone not despite the differences but because of them, seeing differences and strengths rather than weaknesses. And I think that's beautiful. And however, you can tell that story, teach that lesson, to get people to listen and not repeat the mistakes of the past is a good thing. And I think people who feel ostracized or different could read this book and know people are always going to be there to fight for them. But maybe that's me being too privileged or too naive.
"Change often starts with the smallest of whispers, Like-minded people building it up into a roar."
"But it's funny right?" "What is?" "That there's so much hope even when it doesn't feel like it."
Anyway, I loved the characters in this story. They're sweet and a little broken and heartbreaking in the very best of ways which is always my favorite. And if you can get passed the controversy tied to the book, it's really worth the read. TJ Klune's writing is amazing. His world and characters break me and make me cry but also make me laugh and hope.

Alright. Amphibia’s ending. Time to vent.
Today, this wild tale of friendship, adventure, mystery and growth...is coming to a close. I've summed up my general feelings about the whole show here. It's lengthy, but it was really helpful for me to write this down and just reflect.
From day one, this lil' frog show caught my interest. I remember the first thing I ever saw related to it was this promotional poster, of a little pink frog running a teenage schoolgirl through a sparkling forest by the hand, and I found it adorable.
I remember watching the Disney Fan Fest event one morning on Disney Channel, where Matt Braly and Brenda Song came up and revealed concept art, gave a little frog trivia quiz, and showed a sneak peek of the first episode. I was intrigued. This idea was cute and unique, and I was excited to see it.
That summer, season one came along. Not gonna lie, I found some of it a little weird at first (and I don't like super dark humor like it had on occasion), but I absolutely LOVED what I saw. It was funny. It was charming. It was smart. The creativity in the character designs and worldbuilding and story was INSANE. The score done by TJ Hill was drop-dead gorgeous.
I loved how they started off with no context, stirring up new questions for me to ponder with every new detail revealed: "Who are these other girls in the picture?" "Who's that old salamander woman with the glowy eyes?" "Why's the music box so dangerous?" "Did Anne's eyes just flash blue in this frame...?"
Ah, everything was so simple back in that season...
Then season TWO came along, and then MORE mystery, more characters, and more development came into play, and I think this was my favorite season. Anne's relationship with the Plantars grew, we got more lore with the Core and the music box and Newtopia, we got to meet Yunan and Andrias and Olivia---and of COURSE the show was nearly STOLEN by beloved M A R C Y  W U (whom I believe most of us adopted into our hearts the MOMENT we heard her speak).
And then True Colors...OH BOY...
That's when things started getting REAL.
Never---NEVER---have I found a Disney Channel show before that could give me such intense emotions as Amphibia can, ESPECIALLY with True Colors. With TJ Hill's music, the stellar directing, the stunning animation, and the shock of what all happened in the episode combined, I was an emotional wreck. The cast and crew already did a great job with the ordinary episodes that weren't specials, but they did NOT hold back in their performance for the season two finale.
And THEN we got All In, and now I can't decide whether that or True Colors was the bigger emotional rollercoaster, but for real---these people are so good at what they do and I applaud them wholeheartedly.
I don't have all that much to say about Season Three, but it is no less enjoyable than the last two seasons. The look at Anne's life in her own world was just what I needed to connect with her even more. I loved seeing Matt put some of his own life into this show as well (Anne's mom is voiced by Matt's mom and that makes me sob).
Of course, we GOTTA talk about the most prominent message of Amphibia, which is friendship!
First off, Anne and Sprig, guys. Back in season one when I barely even KNEW them, their friendship made me cry like a baby, and it was beautiful to see it develop over time. It just warms my heart to see how close they've gotten and how strong their bond is.
Second, The Calamity Trio's little friend triangle is so, so complex! It's just a few teens vibing like teen friends do, but if you look closely you can see some toxicity that needs to be healed. I love the way Amphibia observes friendships---how they can make you stronger, how they can come from anywhere or from anyone, what can can make or break a healthy bond, e.t.c. It doesn't just portray friendship as "happiness and rainbows and sunshine" like so many other shows do---no, it actually takes the topic SERIOUSLY, and the way it's handled is amazing.
Man, I could go on and on and ON about the genius writing that Amphibia has to offer, and what I love about each of my favorite characters and everything...but that would bog me down and I'd never finish this post.
By the end of the finale, everything in the story will have fulfilled its purpose, but it still feels so soon for it to end. Amphibia was a crazy, exciting and wonderful ride, and I'm gonna miss it. I'm gonna miss all these characters I've fallen in love with. I'm gonna miss asking questions, watching as new discoveries unfold and puzzle pieces get put together. I'm gonna miss "travelling" with Anne through this new world, watching as she grew stronger both physically and mentally (BTW Anne is a true example of not just a good female lead, but an awesome protagonist in general).
But the end of the day, the last thing I want is for a show to keep going after it's run out of its juice, and you know what? I'm satisfied. I'm satisfied with what I've been given, and I will continue to enjoy this show long after it's over.
He's not reading this but I'll say it anyway:
Thank you, Matt Braly, for making an impact on my heart with your brilliant storytelling and worldbuilding, your iconic characters, and the inspiration in your life that lead you to create one of the best cartoons I've ever seen. You are extremely talented, and I can't wait to see what you make in the future.

Corporal Larson! He heard the lieutenant call.
In here, lieutenant. He called, and the cavity of the plane's tail echoed, making his voice louder than he meant.
He soon heard the lieutenant's boots go from walking on metal walking to them.
There's a whole ass... sorry, kid. Lieutenant Håvard starts TJ looking up at him with curiosity.
You make it sound like he doesn't say the worst things. Tord said.
He doesn't need to know that. TJ said, folding his arms as Tord rolled his eyes.
I don't know what this is besides the big nuclear symbol and the warning it's nuclear and handle with care. He said as TJ went back to piggybacking on Tord's back with a yawn.
We'll take this whole thing back to base. Good job, Corporal. lieutenant said, patting his back
Hey, I located and found it the crashed plane. He only found this! Don't take all the credit. TJ said.
Good job, TJ. Now take your boy back to the hotel to get some rest. Lieutenant Håvard said.
Thank you, Lieutenant. But I just want to check if friends of mine are alright. Tord said.
Alright, be careful, my boy. Key the little one close. Oh, maybe help me move this barrel to my vehicle. I'll take it to base tonight, so you might be alone for tonight. Lieutenant Håvard said.
I'll put TJ in the car. Tord said before realizing the zombies entering.
Oh, God dammit. Tord said, getting his gun and firing the first few..
Get away from the barrel if you're sho... Lieutenant Sørensen said, seeing the zombies.
Oh, right. Tord said, trading the gun for a switch blad and a pipe setting TJ behind boxes. Tord used the pipe and blade to take out the zombies.
That was fun. Come on, TJ. Tord said.
The lieutenant was horrified by what she saw, watching as the 5 year old who watched it all paddle out from hiding to his father.
I'll be back, Lieutenant. Tord said.
Bye, Lieutenant Sørensen. TJ's said from Tord's shoulders.
Bye, TJ. Lieutenant Sørensen said.
That family, I swear. The lieutenant muttered, trying to move the barrel himself.
Are you sure you didn't get a bite? I don't want you dying or turning. TJ said.
I'm a skilled fighter, I'm fine. Tord said as he walked through the forest.
Eh, I would check just in case. TJ said.
Will you ever stop giving me a hard time. Tord sighed.
Not until I'm back to myself, asshole. TJ said.
You sound like it was me who changed you into a baby... also, you sacrifice yourself for me. He said.
Yeah, you were supposed to get out of London without me not taking me away from my friends. And now an evil Tord is doing shit! If i hadn't stopped, this wouldn't be happening! TJ said, hitting him and pulling his hair.
Ow! stop! Tord said, grabbing the toddler and holding TJ up, getting glared at by the kid.
Look, it's nobodies fault. Just stop and calm down. Honestly, I thought you would have forgotten that since then, but no, I get this every time. Here's your toy and book. I'll be back. Tord said after buckling him in.
TJ blew raspberries at him as he shut the door.
My greatest Foe, my three-year-old "son." Tord muttered, then sighed he's just tired. it's past his bedtime. Tord said as he walked. He could still hear those guys shooting in the distance.
They need an army, not just three people. He said then thought about what TJ said about an "evil Tord." The leader did look like him. He had hated the clones. They caused him trouble people saying they saw him in place he went or never go.
He faintly remembered TJ before this in an old vehicle of theirs they managed to get running and living out of it. He remembered watching them course Edd though it was weird and dragged him to do things around the house or the couch to watch Telly/ play video games... Kicking Tom's ass in video games was Tord's favorite part of those times.
He looked down. This is how missing them feels like. It hurts. He likes his job, but he hadn't noticed the pain of missing them since he was busy, or maybe he made himself busy to distract himself, portending that all is fine. *growling coming from stomach* Did he eat supper? He forgot to make food for himself and TJ.
TORD! Hurry up, I need help! Lieutenant Sørensen call.
Coming, Lieutenant. Tord said, "Now running
They managed to get the barrel into the back of the lieutenant's vehicle. After insuring it would move, Tord got the key for the hotel. They said their goodbye.
It was late, but he still drove past the house. They add a second level to the house (would have been handy when four people were living there, but. Tord did have to share a room with Tom when he moved in before Tord got annoyed by Tom's... everything and made a closet they weren't using and put his stuff in there. Yes, it was small, but he didn't care it's not his room.
Of course, the lights were on at almost midnight (the three men were still shooting at Zombies) , and Tord could see the three playing video games.
Five years, and they still haven't changed.
Tord looked back at the sleeping five-year-old. He couldn't leave him.
Tord the a breath and slipped out. Carrying TJ, who stirred and looked around.
Hey, buddy. We're just seeing some friends of mine, ok? You can still sleep or sleep in my old room. Tord said to TJ, who groaned. Then we'll go to bed. He said softly, kissing the child's forehead.
Are they still at it? TJ said sleepily as more shots were heard.
Sadly. Tord said with a sigh before knocking.
As usual, Edd was heard saying, "Tom, can you get the door?"
Tom's going to slam the door in our face, though. Tord muttered as he got a toddler backpack.
How tragic. TJ said as Tord tilted his head at the green house next door that's new.
Tom opened the door.
Hey, Tom. Tord said, and Tom sighed, rolling his eyes and shutting the door.
Told you. He never changes.... At least they're ok. Tord said.
Good thing you didn't bet on him shutting the door. I have nothing to bet except for fruit snacks... which I didn't have much of. TJ said as he looked up as the clouded sky became full of stars (well, enough stars you can see in the city) before seeing the numbers of zombies coming their way

The House in the Cerulean Sea | TJ Klune | Published 2020 | *SPOILERS*
Tumblr media
A magical island. A dangerous task. A burning secret.
Linus Baker leads a quiet, solitary life. At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records. As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages.
When Linus is unexpectedly summoned by Extremely Upper Management he's given a curious and highly classified assignment: travel to Marsyas Island Orphanage, where six dangerous children reside: a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentified green blob, a were-Pomeranian and the Antichrist. Linus must set aside his fears and determine whether or not they're likely to bring about the end of days.
But the children aren't the only secret the island keeps. Their caretaker is the charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, who will do anything to keep his wards safe. As Arthur and Linus grow closer, long-held secrets are exposed, and Linus must make a choice: destroy a home or watch the world burn.
An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place - and realizes that family is yours.
Linus Baker is an ordinary man working an extraordinary job. He is a caseworker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. These children, deemed strange and unusual by ordinary people, are kept in orphanges or schools until they hit adulthood, where they would then be registered with the Department in Charge of Magical Adults, where they can be monitored in everything they do, everyday.
When Extremely Upper Management requests Linus for a special assignment, he begins to question what their motives are. He is told that he would spend a month on the island of Marsyas, where an level four orphanage is being run by a man named Arthur Parnassus. In his tutelage are six magical youth. Linus is given their files on what is known of them.
There is Talia, a garden Gnome who is 246 years old. She is considered strange as Gnomes are typically male and not female. She keeps a wonderful garden on the property surrounding the orphanage, and despite her hardened demeanor is actually quite a joy to be around. There is Theodore, a wyvern, one of the few left of his kind, who keeps a hoard of treasures that he finds or takes, usually in the turret of the orphanage where he sleeps, or under the couch. He only lets the most trusted of people see it. Next we have Phee, a young forest sprite who remained next to her dead mother who had starved to death until she was rescued and brought to the orphanage. With the help of an island sprite, she has been able to control her powers, which for someone so young is rumored to be quite strong, something also unheard of and quite feared. There is Sal, a young broken boy, the oldest of the lot at 13, but who had been through so much. Within the last few months, he had been shipped to several different orphanges, and the more times this occurred, the less he felt like he was being accepted and at home where he was. His magical being is a Pomeranian, which he turns into when he is scared or angry, and after being struck by the master of his last orphange, was sent to the island, where he feels a bit more accepted but is still scared to come out of his shell. There is Chauncey, whose magical being isn't quite known or understood, but he resembles an octopus. His greatest desire in life is to become a bellhop and help people, and he does a wonderful job practicing with others in the orphanage as well as with Linus upon his arrival. And lastly, and quite honestly the biggest shock for Linus, is Lucy, short for Lucifer. He is titled as being the Antichrist - his mother deceased and his father is the devil himself. He is a 6 year old boy struggling with many emotions, and isn't quite sure how to handle the nightmares that occur, but with Arthur's help, these nightmares have become few and far between.
When Linus arrives on the island, he is determined to get to know the children in an unbiased way, as well as Arthur. He is unsure of Arthur's past, as his file had been suspiciously lacking in information. But, Linus begins to get to know the children, and Arthur, and his time on the island begins to open his once closed-off mind to the wonders of each of the kids.
During the week, he observes them during their schooling and personal time. He is invited to see their rooms and spaces that are theirs, and with a little determination, he earns the trust of Sal, who was once terrified that he had been there to send him away once again.
As the month goes on, Linus finds himself opening up more and more. And to his surprise, he also learns that Arthur is a magical being: a Phoenix, the last of his kind. Linus is absolutely floored by Arthur's beauty and their flirting becomes stronger and stronger. And through perserverance and Linus's help, Arthur is able to take the kids into the village where they are despised so much.
But, at last, Linus's time with with the children and Arthur has come to an end. Zoe, the island sprite, is devastated at Linus's choice to leave, and while Linus himself is hesitant to do so, he knows that the orphanage relies on his final report findings.
When he returns back to his home and his regular life, Linus feels lost. He explains to Extremely Upper Management that the orphanage should remain open, and that they should remain with Arthur, who has become a father to these children who have otherwise been burned by the government.
After weeks of hearing nothing, Linus learns that they had agreed to keep the orphanage open, and with that, Linus packs up his desk and quits his job, determined to return to the island, which he does, where he is accepted with open arms. He and Arthur begin a relationship, and everything is fine. It is when the mayor of the village comes to the island with a request to take in a new, undocumented youth, whom is a Yeti named David, that we learn that Arthur and Linus have decided to put in a petition to adopt the six children in their care together, and that Linus has officially moved into the home with the family he now loves so much. It is also alluded that he and Arthur will get married, and they can live their happy lives in the Cerulean Sea.

Dragon Recommends You Read The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lots of people have probably been talking about this book on Tiktok, but if you're like me and don't have one of those, you might've missed this gem.
I happened across it by chance, and after reading the quote on the front cover ("like being wrapped up in a big gay blanket") I was like Okay You've Got My Attention. And the first page inside had another quote saying this was the "greatest feel-good story ever to involve the Antichrist." Therefore I was obligated to read it.
The first bit of the book presents the fairly boring and bleak life of the main character Linus Baker, a forty-year-old man who has no family, friends or loved ones. He's a caseworker in the Department In Charge of Magical Youth, or DICOMY. He visits orphanages for magical children to evaluate them, making sure the kids are being properly cared for and deciding whether or not the orphanage remains open. Suddenly, he's called by the bigwigs (Extremely Upper Management) for a meeting where he's given an incredibly classified mission: To check out one of the most isolated orphanages where the "most dangerous problem children" go, run by Mr. Arthur Parnassus. Thus Linus' life begins to change quite rapidly.
I want to talk so much more about the book but I don't want to spoil even a little bit, so I'll bite my tongue. But I can say that the way Klune writes this novel is incredible. It begins very matter-of-factly, the world simply black-and-white and oh so dreary as Linus trudges through his daily life. You can see when things begin to change for him. All of the children? They're so fantastic. One wrote a poem and I CRIED reading it. And oh man don't get me STARTED on the love story portion it's SO GOOD but I can't spoil any of it!!! You really must read it for yourself!
Warnings for those who need it would be for references of: past child abuse/neglect, past deaths of intelligent sentient/sapient creatures, past starvation leading to parental death, kids pretending there are cannibals in the forest or man-eating snakes/insects, morbid/dark humor for shock value (mostly via Lucy), and past fires in a home.
Despite this situation the kids find themselves in though, and the adults who now care for them... this novel becomes so very bright and warm. Because, as is mentioned in the book, the word "orphanage" here is a misnomer; Mr. Parnassus' orphanage is truly their home.
As if all of that wasn't enough to hook my heart, I literally learned this today:
Tumblr media
And I wanted to cry because I was so HAPPY to see someone so open about being on the ace spectrum. And somehow, I had known this, subconsciously. Because it certainly permeates his writing, in the simplest and smallest of ways that hit so powerfully by the end. Like Klune understood me.
This story reached out like a gentle, warm hand and touched my heart. I so very rarely feel that in stories. I'm so very glad he's written this and other stories. I hope other ace people out there can feel the same comfort and joy from his writing.

magnus would spend hours running through fields and forests. he could identify birds by name- not their actual names, but ones he had made up for himself. nightglider. sunsetbeak. stormcaller. he would call to them, and not really get a response. after all, this was a six year old running blind through the woods, shrieking and laughing. but they'd respond when he fell asleep in piles of autumn leaves. they'd fly over and land, some losing their balance on the uneven forest floor, some, gracefully perching, like they'd been practicing this one maneuver their entire lives. and they'd leave offerings.
even at six, magnus had wondered why. he'd wake up to find pinecones, lost hair clips, berries. sometimes he'd use them to make a gift than return. more often than not, though, they'd find a place in a cardboard box, back at home, painted with pictures of the sun, trees, and flowers. well, when magnus found the box years later, it was hard to tell if that's what they were. the brush strokes rarely stayed within the boundaries, and there was now a distinct layer of soot, that- no matter how much he tried- would not completely come clean. the box had been found under a pile of rubble. the same pile had been left when they came to dismantle his house. too haunted, they'd said, after the stories of wolves. no one wanted to live there.
showing this box to the rest of floor 19 was probably a bad idea. magnus admitted that much. halfborn and alex had both laughed at him, and tj had backed the fuck away. the son of frey had asked him if he was okay, but tj didnt reply. safe not to jump to any conclusions. malllory, on the other hand, surprisingly, thought it was adorable. that seemed very out of character. then again, she could've just been pulling his leg. she spent a good half an hour looking through it, draping a necklace over her calloused fingers, even asking if she could keep one or two of the pressed flowers.
frankly, he didn't care whether she did or not. he just kept on thinking. kept thinking and wishing he could go back to his fantasies, and not the very real fantasy he was now living in.
