A Lil update on happy things in my life for moots or future me or whatev. (3 parts)

For the first time since lockdown I met up with my friends (3peeps from the dad squad) in ghent. I had so much fun, we sunbathed shirtless on their balcony starting drinking at 3, cheapest bear Cara ❤️, setted timers to remind us to drink water enough and listened to all kinds of shrek music. It was absolutely amazing. Regulations onlyh allowed us to be there till 22pm so then we went to my student dorm. And that's where we had our Shrigga Migga Cocktail (vodka, plant based milk and Choco powder) and played some dumb card games to make us drink that absolutely wonderful drink. Ended the night with watching Shrek 2 ❤️❤️❤️ shrek 3 for next time. Love my babes so much.

I finished rewatching Ouran high school host club a fantastic mess and downloaded the OST since it reuses so many things and it's all pretty dumb but lovely. Started season 3 of Starmyu 😭 my musical babies, it's not really topping first season but it's still nice.

I'm healing very well from correction surgery, which had pushed me into doing more cardio at the gym instead of powerstuff (I mostly only really do back and upper limbs).

The routine shift to cardio and i made me go just a tiny bit more restrictive in my diet than before but it has been showing some good results.

I'm really getting to like running. I'm still very picky on what time and circumstances are okay for me to run in since I overheat easily but it's really nice to see growth in distance and pace. I always dread soreness so much so I've been trying to keep up with some good stretches.

And honestly a those things coming togheter has put me in a great spot. I'm really starting to like and accept my body, and I'm finally starting to be able to accomplish and get into things I really like and wanted to do for a long time. (I like doing sports so much but I never really participated in anything cause I was always so dysphoric)

Starmyu Season 2 Episode 9 Highlights Part 1

This is a HUGE spoiler post. If you haven’t watched Episode 9, I encouraged you to do so before reading this. BUT BEWARE this episode will make your heart racing towards the end and it will leave you in shock! (And in need of the next episode more desperately than ever) My comments will be after the cut.

THIS WILL BE RANKED FROM WHICH ONE IS THE BEST SCENES (in my opinion) OF THE EPISODE 

1. THE ANNOUNCEMENTS! THE ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

Some might think that I am being overly dramatic but seriously, the announcement scene made me hold my breath. Allow me to describe my reaction as I post some photos of the scene below.

When they said this, I was like OMG FINALLYYYY

And then it continued with this

And in my mind, who was it again? Lol. I completely forgot. But then, when they announced who.....

I literally fist pumped the air. Not that I didn’t believe that Tengeji would get the role but the anime have been trying to shove in our minds that Inumine is a genius that it made me worried for a sec there. But I am incredibly happy that Tengeji got it (Shout out to Hosoyan because I miss him so much and hearing him in here made me so glad that Hosoyan managed to finish Tengeji’s lines before he went for a break.)

And here is a photo of the proud and smiling Tengeji for you guys. (Plus the open-mouthed random characters lol)

Now, on to the next one...

I’m embarassed to say this but I honestly cannot remember who was in the running for this role. 

And then, he said it and I was like, “YASSSSSSS” (literally I fangirled in my room at 1 am. No shame lol) I gotta admit though, this was somewhat predicatable and unpredictable because at one part, we all had a feeling that Team Ootori will win the roles but for this specific role, Kuga, Toraishi and the other guy (I’m sorry I forgot his name while writing this lol) were equally good and they somewhat became close? No clue. But yay to Kuga!

Now, I give you a happy and cool Kuga. Look at that determined smile!

Next one is.....

Okay. If you have watched the episode, the beginning part focused on Ugawa and Nayuki’s worries (which I will mention later on) and this one made me so nervous for both Nayuki and Ugawa. And when they said, ...

My heart ached. I was really hoping that Nayuki would get but I can only hope. But Nayuki being the angel that he is, congratulated Ugawa. But when he said this,

I can hear my heart breaking. IT’S OKAY NAYUKI-KUN YOU’RE STILL THE SWEETEST CHARACTER TO ME.

(though deep in my heart and my mind, I had thought for a moment that maybe the anime will make that Ugawa will not be performing for unknown reasons and Nayuki will replace him.) I know. I’m horrible. Anyways, on to the next one!

But yeah nope. it went to the ending song. THE FREAKING ENDING SONG LIKE WHAAAA (I love the song but why nowwww). And as we all know, after the song, they usually continue by showing scenes of the ancient or senpais. So I was frustrated. And the song ended (yes, I could have skipped the song but I love it too much so I just listened through lol) Then, the scene continued! YASSSS THANK YOU STARMYU STAFF YOU’RE THE BEST FOR NOT MAKING ME WAIT ANOTHER WEEK TO KNOW WHO GOT THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT ROLES.

And so, it continues with...

HOORAYYYYYY!!! HE GOT IT! HE GOT THE ROLE. I am glad he did. Getting rejected for his chosen role and having to switch with another one can be disappointing but he managed to pull through! Good job Kaito-kun!

His shocked and relieved reaction is priceless and endearing. I was emotional for a sec there. Ugh. I adore him so much! Look at their happiness!

Next one is the most nerve-wrecking of all.

While I was happy, my heart ached when Sawatari sighed in sadness. What is this roller coaster of emotions? T_T

The Alexis’ shadow role is certainly the most important and scary one out of all the roles. We have Tatsumi, Hoshitani, Ageha and Nanjo fighting to get it and this role has been the focused since the start of this season. So, it was undecided who woould get it. Although I think that most of us will assume that Hoshitani will be chosen just because he’s the main character and this season has been highlighting Hoshitani’s talent and uniqueness more than ever.

But nope. They went with this. I love Tatsumi (Yay Nobu) but I wanted Hoshitani to perform. So, again my heart had been broken to tiny pieces. WHY JUST WHY? WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? THAT WAS TOTALLY UNEXPECTED AND SHOCKING

EVEN THEIR FACES SAID SO. Everyone was shocked because it is the most controversial role ever. Poor Hoshitani. 

But then.... 

I’m like, “There’s more?! Haven’t you had enough of breaking all of our hearts already?” But still, I watched despite being somewhat uninterested because I couldn’t move on with what happen. And they gave us this...

Although we all knew this would happen sooner or later but congrats Hiragi-senpai! And it made me think about whether the suspicious thing that Haruto and the ancients discussed about was maybe about Hiragi instead of Hoshitani.

Oh okay.... wait, what? I already had a feeling where this is going. So I unconsciously held my breath.

Go on. Go on. Let my hope be a reality.

OMG OMG OMG OMGGGG WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY UOZUMI???????

Those were the only words I could mutter after I held my breath throughout this whole scene. Although I had a feeling it will turn out like this but when it became real, it is not less shocking. 

All these reactions are priceless!Who wouldn’t be shocked? These people were training for small roles but then, one of them got the main role. THE FREAKING MAIN ROLE THAT IS MEANT FOR THE LEADER OF KAO COUNCIL but instead a second year student, who was initially rejected in the audition of the Musical class and had to work hard to be as good as his over-achiever teammates, managed to get the most important role of all. And alongside his admired senpai and all the other talented Kao council members. LIKE WHAT THE HECKKKK

YOU ARE CERTAINLY A MIRACLE HOSHITANI YUTA

but what’s with that contradicting smile (are you not shocked at all????)

p/s: the other highlights will continue in another post because this went too long lol. You can’t blame me though. They threw a sudden curveball at us and brought us along the roller coaster ride of emotions. Now, until then....

i can’t believe it’s not ninjas

as it turns out, deciding to watch ninjas instead of trying different things is a sure way to make your idiot brain want to watch as many different things as possible. 

I know.

so, as soon as i promised to give in and plunge headfirst into NINJAS ALL THE TIME, BABY, i also decided it was a good idea to finish off the stuff i’d started from last season. i mean, starmyu went so well! might as well keep going!

i finished off Tsuki ga Kirei first, since i’d been furthest along with it out of what i had left. it was.. alright? i mean, it was a middle school romance. exactly the amount of back-and-forth stupidity, JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER, and friends/romantic rivals being quietly petty that you’d expect. and like, the final episode is pretty strong, but HAHA WOO, what a bunch of crap to wade through first. it has a fairly high score, too, so i dunno exactly what i missed. the festival bits were neat? 

next up uhhh errr uhhh Kabuki-bu, SURE. i dunno, i can’t even.. like, even if you enjoy traditional theater, this is probably just.. fine enough. why was last season so disappointing? basically, a kid really loves kabuki, starts his own performance troupe in spite of most of the participants not really being super into kabuki, and they just kind of stumble along and enjoying hanging out, and eventually the kid hooks up with other people who actually DO like kabuki. i’m totally not sure where the story actually went, outside of slowly circling the general idea of kabuki as a medium. uh, good job, i guess? there was a prince lesbian?

i certainly watched Love Kome: We Love Rice, a show about personified strains of rice singing and dancing, going to rice school, and competing against.. breads. there were some good puns, but the real draw was the tiny short segment at the end of each episode (which were also.. very short) where a different rice dish was shown. pretty sure there’s a website you can go to, also, to look at the recipes. 

(at this point, a review of it reminded me that i had watched and archived Makura no Danshi, which i highly recommend if you love to cringe and feel kind of gross. my keeping it archived probably says a lot about me as a person.)

i had watched a bit of Concrete Revolutio before, and liked the style and coloring, so i finished that too. it’s. a lot of ????? plot, but also it looks real neat. and i am, of course, a shallow trollop. if its second season looks as neato, i’ll probably watch that too, in spite of struggling to care. 

while marking that off, remembered Koe no Katachi and how the BR for Kimi No Na Wa had probably finally come out! i settled in to watch it with some popcorms and not gonna lie: it was pretty. it earned the hype. a neat little good story. still like Koe No Katachi better, and honestly? i was most familiar with Shinkai from 5cm Per Second, so this was.. a little bit of not what i wanted. though, if it had been what i wanted out of a Shinkai film, probably wouldn’t have been so blisteringly popular? ah well. anyway, watch Koe no Katachi. 

i saw that there was a second season of New Game! airing now, so i decided to watch the first one. that was some cute shit, man. a whole mess of adorable lesbians, doing video game making things. i dunno, cute-girls-doing-cute-things continues to be an excellent feel-good genre. Yagamin for Best Girl~

MAL tells me i marked Fukumenki Noise as finished and scored it, but i.. really don’t remember how it ends. hell of an impression. music recycled over and over, very awkward CGI. last season: real bad.

aaaaaand yesterday i finished DRAMAtical Murder. now, i’m told the VN is better, and it’s at least more visually appealing in the hour or so i’ve played it? so that’s probably true. can’t wait to date my computer dog. 

in summary, anime is weird. 

also, i tried playing the dad dating sim and failed to seduce my goth husbando, so i have to get revenge on that game at some point. also, for a game without explicit sex scenes? a very awkward amount of the voice acting is grunts, gasps, and sighs. so that was.. real weird.

Indians are not black people, get your SJW point straight before trying to judge a largely homologous East Asian society with Western cultural baggage.

*and now lemme facepalm for a thousand years before coming up with a coherent answer*

OK, I’m not saying it isn’t problematic at all. Letting one race play another race in (even slightly) stereotypical ways are always worthy of critical discussion. But again, you need to be able to differentiate black/brown/yellowfacing as different subjects of problematic racial representation before I can get my point across. 

It is true that Japan is far from a racism-free society (I’m Chinese, so I fucking know) but it also does not carry the same racial baggage carried by majority white western countries. 

To be very honest, Japanese media way more often give highly stereotypical portrayals of Chinese, Koreans and SE Asians than other race across the board (and they invaded all these places in WWII, so we tend to be more sensitive about it than other countries as well). Like how Chinese characters always wear Qi Pao and talk with weird particles to formulate a presumed Chinese accent (which is always not the case), or how any mixed-race character in anime are bilingual in very unrealistic and ridiculous ways (I’m trilingual since child, so I also fucking know). And Japanese comedians have a notorious tradition of blackfacing. The actions themselves, of course, deserve to be frowned upon, but it also does not carry the same weight like how Hollywood whitewashing or X-facing reflects the racial relations in say the US or the western world in general. Its relation to Japan’s institutionalized racism (which I’m sure exists but on a smaller level compared to the US) is hard to trace and there is also the fact that Japan IS a largely Japanese/East Asian dominated society? There really just are a much smaller percentage of non-Japanese people in Japan? And an even smaller percentage of them work in the entertainment industry, and only a tiny fraction of those who do are active in 2.5D stage. The majority of mixed-race actors are half white, I only know 1 who’s half-black and 1 who’s half Brazilian. Like, there really just aren’t that many of them around for there to be public pressure for change. And I know as a fact that Japanese people, like many other homologous societies, holds the idea of “racial purity” where you have to at least look East Asian to be consider Japanese, and there ARE cases of racism against half-Japanese individuals whose other parent are of a darker skin. So unfortunately the idea of “representation” really isn’t on the minds of media people. I’m not saying this isn’t an issue at all, just that it isn’t an issue big enough for people to reflect on why it might be problematic.

So back to Soma & Agni. First of all, I think they are both decent actors who love their characters a lot. Second, through their casting, I think it is obvious that Kuromyu wants to build on the show’s hype and legacy, since both Jinnai Sho and TAKUYA have a lot of fans of their own and are beloved in their respective circles. So while Kuromyu prides itself on being “accurate”, the issue of racial accuracy was obviously not on their radar. Like I said before, this simply isn’t a thing they consider to be a problem. 

Think of how almost 100% of non-Japanese characters are voiced by 100% Japanese seiyuu, and sometimes they end up giving racially stereotypical performances as well. Ono Kensho voiced a Thai in YOI and he’s not Thai. Toriumi Kousuke voiced a half-French character in Starmyu and he’s not half-French, the actor who plays that character on stage was also not half-French. So there’s the real issue itself, and there’s also the reality where it isn’t considered an issue by the wider Japanese society. And as unfortunate as it may sound, I don’t think this is something that’s going to change in the near future.

TLDR: The brownfacing is problematic, but due to its limited impact (especially compared to western societies with a much more diverse racial making) Japanese don’t see it as a serious issue so it isn’t being challenged.

Do you happen to know which starmyu pairings are the most popular/considered canon among the Japanese fandom (and is kuganayu among them)?

I’m not a total expert, and let me say this is all my observations:Tatsumi x Eigo (the Elegance Pair)  and Uozomi x Haruto are pretty much given.  

Hoshitani + everyone is pretty popular?  Hoshinayu (big/or the fans are just more hi key, not really sure yet), Hoshitori, Hoshitsuki (got bigger after their duet), Hoshikuga, you get my point.  Like I’ve seen a lot of pairs with him.  

I haven’t seen Hoshiten though!

Guess the same can be said for Kuga (though i don’t actively look for anything that’s not Kuganayu for this).

Speaking of which, Kuganayu is actually the rare pair.  Like fans are there, but more lowkey compared to others.  Such a tiny community! >There’s more attention now after Episode 9, it’s like this sleepy fandom woke up!  Even those who don’t ship it comment that it was a moment.  

OH! And best of all!  Ugawa + Nayuki is the brotp everyone is gushing about right now. ^__^;

what is your opinion on the second season of starmyu so far??

sorry for the late reply orz i’ve been pretty neglecting with basically all fandom stuff recently, but at least i’m up to date on starmyu so i’m surprised to get this ask but very happy!

okay, so before i answer your question i just wanna repeat (or in case you haven’t noticed say for the first time) that i’m always heavily biased towards the characters and ships i like with everything i watch. sometimes i just don’t care that much about other things.

now, to answer the question in one sentence: it’s different than the first season. it’s got a different focus so it’s hard to compare.

and here’s the long answer lol under a cut cause it got long

my bias on this show is mostly the twins and nayuki. unfortunately, the season hasn’t given me much of either of these. of course i also love team ootori in general but, again, i feel like i haven’t gotten much of them as a whole. i liked the idea of them all kinda splitting up to be in groups with other people but i’m sad that it’s basically at the cost of the relationships that were established in season 1. i’m not saying i entirely dislike the season, but as i said, it’s quite different. 

furthermore, there were several new characters introduced which made the already quite big ensemble even bigger so it’s hard to give all the characters equal attention. unfortunately for me, that ended up giving even less attention to what i mostly cared about. to be honest, at first i seriously disliked ageha cause, let’s face it, he was a creep. of course, our miracle boy hoshitani saved him. at this point tho, i almost feel like things are too easy for hoshitani. yes, i like ageha now, but at the same time i think i’m feeling myself lose a tiny bit of interest in yuuta. he’s still got the seiyuu bonus and just the general sunshine character so it’s not like i could dislike him but idk.... i’m just not feeling it as much anymore which tbh i’m just realising as i write this down

now, the twins are just an entirely different matter. can you imagine how happy i was when they first said they’d perform together? literally the only thing i want from starmyu is for the twins to go back to their first-name base like the brothers they are. i’m still missing that and now tsubasa is gone which i predicted three weeks or so before it was official because animes always hate me and yuuta is taking his spotlight. sorry for using such rude words but to me it feels like that. in the end, the twins were never supposed to be happy together is the feeling i get from this season :’D in the end, tsubasa was just a plot device to get yuuta on the same stage with and as the partnered lead to itsuki. and, honestly, i just don’t like that. yes, itsuki and yuuta are my notp and yes, i’ll be bitter about it as much as i want. i am bitter, very much so. guess i’ll have to wait another 500 years to see my twins being as close as they used to. do the other even know they’re twins???? all they know is that they’re ‘distantly related’ don’t they? that fucks me up tbh does the kao kai know? DO THEY KNOW?? I NEED TO KNOW GDI

okay sorry, i’m drifting off...... anyway, i like the new characters, i like the general idea of what they’re doing but i’m not entire content with how they’re executing it. i want more team ootori together and i especially want them to fucking sing together. ofc only having one song each episode gives more time for plot but man, half the reason i’m watching this anime is cause music happens. i want nayuki to be more than comedic relief and let’s face it, his and akira’s episode didn’t really do either of them justice and it’s not like much changed anyway oh, and to be honest, i’m still not entirely happy with how they decided on the roles in the very beginning. and i’m even less content with yuuta and kaito switching roles. i wanted kaito to grow from the experience and overcome it on his own. i wanted someone else than yuuta to be the main role of the practice roles cause that’s just not how life works, is it? give some spotlight to the other characters please.

tl;dr: i don’t entirely hate the season and i do look forward to watching it every week, but in my opinion it doesn’t compare to the first season. i’m not content with some of the decisions but most episodes have had moments over which i fangirled and which i enjoyed. it just feels slightly less of as wholesome an experience as season 1 has.
