Ngl you were in my mind when I was writing that book recommendation :3 I hope you will enjoy it if you end up getting it! But keep in mind that because it is humorous it is not a deeb dive but rather scracthing the surface.

I will have to do a confession here that I don't read too much of finnish literature (something that I need to fix)

A general tip: try adding "selkokirja" (or selkosuomi/selkokielinen) to your search. Selkokirjat are books writen, or re-writen into simpler finnish than the original. (yle's website has a section "selkouutiset" where you find news in selkosuomi

Sorry, I wrote you a really long list, but maybe more is better so you can pick and choose.

-The moomin books by Tove Janson! Pick any one, Comet in Moominland and Midsommer Madness are my faves. They were originally written in swedish because Tove was swedish-speaking finn, so finnish editions are translations. There's also comics.

-Not Before Sundown by Johanna Sinisalo. English translation (and many other) is available of this one. This book is about a gay man called Enkeli (angel) who takes a baby troll into his house and tries to take care of it. But troll is part of a wild nature and the night. From tiny snippets we follow how this turns out. Finlandia Prize winner.

-The Unkown Soldier by Väinö Linna. This is THE Book in Finland. A finnish classic and the nation's "collective memory" of the Continuation war against Russia. Many movies made out of this one. According to wikipedia there is a new english translation from 2015, which is better than the previous but some of the localization has been critizied.

-The Purge by Sofi Oksanen. A very dark and depressing book set in the soviet occupation of Estonia. Haven't read this one yet but it is widely popular. Check wikipedia for more info.

-Ja hän huutaa: Splatterpunk-Antologia (Aaave Taajuus, 2014) I took you like violence and blood, well here's a collection of splatterunk short stories writen by different finnish horror authors. Havent read all of them yet, but the ones I have read have been... good in a way of "I wanted to be disgusted and I got what I wanted". Let me tell you, these shortstories are propably the most gruesome shit writen in finnish horror scene. All warnigns ably. You honestly just need to read the backcover. It's only available in finnish but I don't think the language will be too complex.

-Pyöveli by Anneli Kanto. Only available in finnish but it's a humortictic, grotesk story set in medieval Finland following the son of an executioner, a newly (un)happily married judge in Vaasa and a peasant determined to get a new, succesfull life.

- Magdalena Hai writes speculative finnish fiction

Some recomendations by my friends: -Ilkka Remes is a thriler writer but I couldn't find any of his works translated

-Childrens books: Risto Räppääjä -books (K makes references to him in few songs!) and Heinähattu ja Vilttitossu.

-Kepler62 by Timo Parvela (Scifi)

-Varjot by Timo Parvela (fantasy)

-Hirviöasiakaspalvelu, kuinka voin auttaa by Anni Nupponen (monster customer service), the publisher is Osuuskumma

-Leena Krohn writes horror/fantasy

Also some classic finnish books are:

-The seven brothers by Aleksis Kivi, the first novel writen completely in finnish. I read this one, at first it was fun but near the ending draged on way too long, sori Aleksi. You will see this one being referenced all the time.

-The Egyptian (Sinuhe egyptiläinen) by Mika Waltari.

-Minna Canth's plays like Työmiehen Vaimo or Annaliisa. They deal with women's position in the victorian era.

Hi! So happy to hear you've started learning Finnish! I do in fact have some recommendations for Finnish literature! Here are some Finnish authors and books I'll recommend:

Timo Parvela

"Ella"-series follows a crazy class of elementary school kids. Aimed at kids but the humor works well for older audiences and the text is easy to read. (This first one helped me learn how to read so I'm recommending it if you're learning to read Finnish)

"Sammon vartijat" a trilogy (Tuliterä, Tiera, Louhi), young adult fiction based on Finnish mythology and the stories of Kalevala.

Salla Simukka

"Lumikki" -trilogy (Punainen kuin veri, Valkea kuin lumi, Musta kuin eebenpuu) is a young adult crime mystery series following a young girl, Lumikki. (Honestly can recommend all her books)

And if you are looking for Finnish comic books, I can give some recommendations too:

Karoliina Korhonen

"Finnish nightmares," a book about social awkwardness and wanting to be polite. "Matti in the wallet," a book full of Finnish sayings and word plays.

Zum Inhalt:

Der 13-jährige Pete wünscht sich nichts sehnlicher, als das seine beste Freundin Sara wieder gesund wird. Denn diese leidet unter einer mysteriösen Krankheit. Verzweifelt wie Pete ist, flüstert er dem Weihnachtsmann im Kaufhaus seinen Wunsch ins Ohr und bekommt in der Nacht Besuch von einem unheimlichen Wichtel. Dieser verspricht ihm, dass sein Wunsch in Erfüllung geht, wenn er ihm dafür seinen Schatten gibt. Zögerlich stimmt Pete dem Handel zu. Am nächsten Tag ist Sara gesund und sein Schatten verschwunden. Doch wie ist ein Leben ohne Schatten? Pete spürt immer mehr, wie ihn der Verlust seines Schattens verändert. Er beschließt ihn sich zurückzuholen und ahnt dabei nicht, mit welchen dunkeln Mächten er es zutun bekommt.

Meine Meinung:

Wir sind sofort mitten im Geschehen und lernen Pete kennen, der nur eins möchte und zwar, dass seine beste Freundin Sara wieder gesund wird. Denn diese leidet unter einer mysteriösen Krankheit, für die es keine Heilung zu geben scheint.

Pete ist ein sympathischer Junge, der wirklich alles für seine Freundin Sara tun würde. Ich fand seine Gründe nachvollziehbar. Ebenso fand ich es bewundernswert, mit wie viel Entschlossenheit er sich auf die Suche nach seinem Schatten machen möchte, obwohl ihm immer wieder viele Zweifel und Ängste plagen. Denn nach und nach erfährt Pete ebenso wie wir, was es heißt keinen Schatten mehr zu besitzen und wie wichtig dieser wirklich ist.

In einem weiteren Handlungsstrang lernen wir die Schattenflickerin Uudit kennen und bekommen somit einen Einblick in die Welt der Wichtel und erfahren, was in dieser für schlimme Dinge geschehen.  Uudit ist eine interessante Figur, bei der ich gespannt bin, welche Rolle sie den nachfolgenden Bänden spielen und für welche Seite sie sich entscheiden wird.

Da Pete bei seinen Nachforschungen bezüglich der verlorenen Schatten auf Schwierigkeiten trifft, ist die ganze Zeit für Spannung gesorgt. So habe ich mit Pete die ganze Zeit mitgefiebert und ihm die Daumen gedrückt, dass er mit seinem Plan Erfolg haben wird. Zudem gabe es einige Wendungen, mit denen mich der Autor überraschen konnte.

Der Autor beschreibt die Figuren und Schauplätze anschaulich und so detailliert, dass man sich diese gut vorstellen kann. Zudem hat er es geschafft, die düstere Atmosphäre die ganze Zeit aufrechtzuerhalten und durch die Seiten zu mir zu transportieren, sodass sie für mich spürbar wurde. Seine Beschreibungen der Figuren und Schauplätze werden zudem von vielen eindrucksvollen Illustrationen unterstrichen, sodass sich wirklich jede junge Leserin und jeder junge Leser ein Bild von diesen bekommen sollten.

Fazit:

Eine spannende und düstere Geschichte, in der wir erfahren, wie es für Pete ist, ohne seinen Schatten zu leben und was für schlimme Dinge in der Welt der Wichtel vor sich gehen. Ich habe mit Pete von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite mitgefiebert und ihm die Daumen gedrückt, dass bei seinem Plan alles gut geht. Nun bin ich gespannt, was ihn auf seiner Suche nach seinem Schatten erwarten wird.

I thought I could make posts here about my process. I’m doing a project on writing a children’s book, and I’m doing research currently. I’m writing down my thoughts as I read.

I finished a book called “Outo juttu” by Timo Parvela on Friday. I actually finished it in like 10 minutes, since it was 42 pages and it was meant for kids who have just started reading. I remember reading it as a kid, or at least my dad read it to me.

It was really fun. It was simple considering its target audience, but it made me laugh. Some of the dialogue reminded me of the screenplay I did with my animator friend, which is funny. I actually told him “this is like straight from our screenplay” and he said “I’m not admitting that Ella books are a big influence”.

I know my target audience is slightly older, or at least can read slightly better, since kids read when they read. You know? Like some 8-year-old might read Captain Underpants, some might read straight up YA fiction. So yeah.
