Walking up to Nostimo & Co. in Elsternwick, there is nothing special about its appearance. A relatively low-key shopfront faces busy Glen Huntly Road, showing off some slightly tacky yet visually appealing photos of their special off-the-menu items. A nice touch of greenery hangs off one of the interior walls, but it’s obvious that the main focus here is on foodporn-worthy grub. Just look at the jars of Nutella and Peanut Butter sitting mightily behind the counter.
A handful of benches cater to groups of people who choose to eat in, however the small size of the venue indicates that a large portion of their customer base is via take-away or home delivery. If you catch a glimpse into the humble kitchen, you may see owner Keith flipping burger patties in the back, taking immense pride and ownership in the Mediterranean-inspired concept of his burger, shake and loaded fries restaurant-slash-cafe that opened a year ago.
Not just any burger restaurant, these guys focus on good quality produce, and utilise a multicultural fusion approach to their creative menu, where saganaki is layered inside a beef burger, and sweet Nutella is liberally drizzled over salty fries. Now, if you’re not a fan of the sweet-and-salty combination, then I would advise against ordering some of their (pretty delicious) menu items. But, if you’ve got an adventurous palate and appreciate an innovative approach to food, then you will absolutely love this place.
Starting with one of the best things I have ever eaten, the Nostimo Shakin’ Fries are a slightly different type of loaded fries, topped with warm Nutella, crushed hazelnuts and toasted coconut flakes. Insanely addictive, this crazy combination is served atop your choice of shake, though the bucket of fries can be taken off of the shake for convenience of consumption.

Pimped Fries that cater to the masses, a variety of flavours go surprisingly well with the well cooked and well seasoned fries, paying homage to Greek, Italian, Peruvian, Mexican, Korean and American cuisines. The Italian is an overdone combination of carbonara sauce, sauteed mushrooms, crispy bacon, cheese, parmesan and spring onion smothered over crispy fries, but damn is it tasty!
Pimped Fries – The Italian (small $10.00, large $14.00)
The same goes for The Mexican, where mildly spiced chilli con carne melds with cheese and spring onions, all of whom exhibit a umami flavour that entices your fork to keep digging in for more.
Pimped Fries – The Mexican (small $10.00, large $14.00)
A Chef’s Special at the time of our visit, Mac n’Cheese Poppers are generously sized, containing plenty of moreish macaroni, cheese and chilli con carne inside its crunchy coating.
Chef’s Special – Mac n’Cheese Poppers (3 for $6.00)
Now, onto their burgers. Easily sliding into my top 5 burgers of all time, The Southern PB is a monster, featuring a hunk of fried chicken (whose incredibly tender meat is well protected inside the crispy batter), crispy bacon, onion rings, jalapenos, mayo, and… PEANUT BUTTER. Yes, you read that correctly. A healthy smothering of oozing peanut butter completes this epic burger, with the sweet-and-salty pairing taken to new heights, made more decadent (and, potentially, a little lighter?!) by the inclusion of mayo. The jalapenos provide a decent kick of spice in certain mouthfuls, whilst the brioche burger bun itself is sufficiently toasted, yet still fluffy, to compliment this incredible array of textures and flavours.
The Southern PB!!!
The Flying Force is a relatively new item on their menu, incorporating some Greek influence into an otherwise-American burger. A well cooked beef patty is layered with melting cheese, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, pickles and pan fried saganaki, with a balsamic reduction and basil mayo. Although a little too rich for my palate, nothing can discount the bold confidence and excellent execution of this ingeniously constructed burger.
The Flying Force ($20.00)
Gluttony in a nutshell, The Clucky Cow boasts a beef patty, Southern fried chicken, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, jalapenos, a fried egg and secret house made sauce. If you’re game enough to try this one, then you won’t be disappointed.
The Clucky Cow ($19.00)
A slightly tamer burger that pays tribute to a classic ‘burger with the lot’, The Sunny Side features a beef patty, double cheese, bacon, a fried egg, pineapple, beetroot, tomato, onion, ketchup and secret house made sauce.
The Sunny Side ($16.50)
If burgers aren’t your thing, you can also choose from their selection of wraps, souvlaki’s and loaded hot dogs, all of which look and sound just as enticing. Their shakes are also a must-try, with Classic shakes such as Choc & Malt or Blue Haven & Malt, or their specialty Nostimo shakes featuring Halva & Cinnamon or Milo & Tim Tam, just to name a few. Decadently thick and sweet, it’s obvious that real ingredients go into their shakes.
Nostimo Shakes – Milo & Tim Tam, Matcha Latte, Cookies & Cream (small size $6.50, large size $8.00) Classic Shake – Blue Haven & Malt (small size $5.00, large size $6.50)
Dessert Nachos
Exceeding all initial expectations, Nostimo & Co. is a must-visit destination if you love burgers, shakes and loaded fries. Perfect for a cheat day meal with friends, or take-away snack by the beach, the quality of their ingredients combined with the impressive creativity of their menu makes them a top competitor in today’s burger-obsessed food industry.
Note: I dined as a guest of Nostimo & Co. Thank you to the owner, Keith, and his staff for their generous hospitality throughout our experience.
