Thanks to @kayatoasted, the Ephemerality Squad has unlocked a small circle of meta: we do believe that boredom is indeed a major player in the Only Friends themes framework! (citations here and here for context).

@kayatoasted noted in the comments of the first link that the theme song for the Only Friends pilot trailer was “I’m Not Boring, You’re Just Bored,” by the Thai band Tilly Birds:

I also noted in convo with @thatgirl4815 earlier this evening that I’m thinking of “toxicity” now as an umbrella term for….everything else the group is demonstrating: their desire to control others, their hypocrisy, Boston’s hunting (cc @ranchthoughts), all of it. It’s just all coming together in a Crock-Pot of shitty behavior that, by way of combination, is just ultra toxic. So much of their crap behaviors could just be attributed to boredom, and not giving a SHIT about the impacts of their actions on others. (And/or in Mew’s case, as I wrote this morning — boredom can also be a MOTIVATOR for risky behavioral changes.)

The wild thing is that this group (and a lot of the fandom, too) JUDGES each other for their toxic behaviors, all while acting toxically at the same time, making the behaviors EXTRA shittily soupy.
