‘A story Brazil never wanted to tell’: the podcasts reclaiming the country’s Black history

Tiago Rogero’s productions are a celebration of the people who arrived in the country as slaves and their descendants who persevere and carry on their legacy

One of Brazil’s most celebrated Black authors sat on stage and posed a vital question to a nation unaware of its past.

Why, asked Conceição Evaristo, were Brazilian schoolchildren taught about the 1835 Ragamuffin war – when separatist forces rebelled against the empire at the behest of white landowners – but not the Malê revolt, a Black Muslim slave uprising that erupted in the very same year?

For Tiago Rogero, a young Black reporter in the audience, it was a eureka moment.

“It’s true, I thought,” the journalist said of Evaristo’s question in the autumn of 2018. “I knew it was a slave revolt but that was about all … I genuinely didn’t know. So I decided to make a podcast about the stories I thought had been hidden when I was at school.”

The result was a trilogy of podcasts celebrating Black lives and Black matters – the Black people, struggles and achievements that had been airbrushed from the history of a country that is more than 50% Black.

The most recent of those podcasts – the Querino Project – calls itself a Brazilian answer to the New York Times’s 1619 Project, which rethought US history through the prism of slavery and the key role Black citizens had in shaping that nation.

“It’s a story Brazil never wanted to tell but instead wanted to suppress,” said Rogero, 34, whose earlier podcasts were called Negra Voz (Black Voice) and Vidas Negras (Black Lives).

HOLY FUCK HOLY SHITTING FUCK SOMEONE FINALLY NOTICED I'M SO HAPPY LMAO

i have so much to say about this oh my fucking god-

first things first, with the el noli fandom being very small, and the novels' author being very dead, i feel obliged to say that i have been desperately craving for content for the past how many years. much of this is due to the fact that the story itself is unfinished (don't even get me started on Makamisa)—but what really takes the cake is that i, along with my friends, have some thoughts on the two main novels.

[immediate apologies for this rant,, i tried to keep this short as i didn't want to get too into the topic lmao]

(1) character disappearances

basilio was a major character in el filibusterismo not only because of his involvement in the story, but because of his past. he knew simoun's true identity, and likely had an idea what happened with elias (there's no way he wouldn't know this—especially when the scandal with crisostomo was such a big thing with the nobility, not to mention basilio being taken under captain tiago's wing after). while i wouldn't yet call him an accomplice to simoun's formation or development as a character at this point in time, when he buries his mother and elias with crisostomo, it's one of the points of interest in his story because it's how he gets involved with one of the main characters in the first place.

moving on to the sequel; he becomes a main character himself. for his story, he could've used his position as a lauded student of medicine to his advantage, especially after julí's death. I'm of the opinion that even if his reputation was ruined due to the arrests, there's no way he couldn't have pulled a favour or two. basilio was angry enough to agree to simoun's offer of revolution, and we don't see much else in the last few chapters save for him trying to stop isagani from going to the party. we don't see him at all after that.

and placido ))):< mans had a whole chapter to himself and we barely ever see him again. the one time we do later in the novel, it's a mere footnote. we don't know the specifics of what he did under simoun's command, we don't even get to witness him in action. what happened in the time between his meeting with simoun and the botched explosion? what happens with his mother after the debacle? what did padre millon do after his outburst? i have so many more questions crammed in one of my oldest google docs lmfao. overall, i really like placido's character too. i felt a kinship with him when i read his chapter—so that factored into my interest in his character.

(2) unfinished story + literature

i understand that the author died before the last novel was finished, but after getting so invested in the series, it left me wanting as a reader. don't get me wrong—i love reading about the theories being made on both official research and on fanfictions when it comes to the stories. but with the fanbase being so small, and some documents unavailable for perusal (at least for me), it's hard to cope with the knowledge that we won't get much else.

additionally, from what I've heard, the novels are being treated as homework, and just that. just research for a subject. perhaps it's my obsession with the stories peaking through, but i stand by that. as a fan of classic literature, especially of works that aren't as globally recognised, it kinda hurts my soul lmao.

alright, listen; material like Les Misérables, Crime and Punishment, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Pride and Prejudice, and et cetera—they deserve their acclaim. I'm not downplaying any of the author's successes nor the legacies that those kinds of works have earned. but stories such as Noli Me Tángere, El Filibusterismo, Wives and Daughters, The Setting Sun, Doña Barbara, and more—i enjoy reading lesser known literature. they have fewer analyses, lower recognition, and are generally more obscure. shifting for these classics is the true immersion, the true experience, in my opinion. it's a chance at finally getting the worlds I've only imagined fully come into life.

(3) personal reasons

a few days ago, a friend of mine remarked that we (the three of us who's in the group) might have had a chance at being called attractive had we lived during the time period the novels were written. this isn't to degrade my friends or myself in any way—just simply stating that there are always better people when it comes to things like beauty. i agreed with her. growing up, i never really fit into that category of conventional attractiveness; and while I've often been told otherwise, i know i still had to grow into my looks, and earn my place into the middle hierarchy with peers, not like the people who've had the privilege of money and breeding to comfort themselves with to actually pay to be attractive.

I'm not saying that to sound misogynistic—i genuinely don't give a shit about the peers who gave me trouble in the past—but i do want to experience that too, you know? everyone's always dreamed of a better life, and what finer way than shifting to experience that?

The first, by tradition, was named for his grandfather, and the second for his father. It was then that the elder Renzo realised his legacy was secure. Three days later the princess passed suddenly in her sleep. It was announced as complications of pregnancy, though those close to the family, when they were feeling brave, whispered at involvement from the Order of the Scorpion. The sad calls of Tonillo began the next day, and would not abate until his death a week later, starved by grief.

Goodness, what a change a year can make. The Giallorossi finished the season as Europa Conference League champions in what was their first European final in 31 years. Although they finished just a point higher than in the previous season under Paulo Fonseca, José Mourinho has given Roma a much-needed identity built on winning. It's a complete culture change, with players buying into the philosophy of the man-in-charge and with Mourinho once again smiling for the first time in what feels like years. It's the perfect marriage of city, team, manager, and culture when it comes to Roma and it feels like everything is peaking at the right time. Fiercely loyal to a fault, Roma fans have embraced Mourinho, ignored his flaws, and gravitated toward his philosophy and mentality with players doing the same. And while we've seen some players lose out because of that, others like Pellegrini and Tammy Abraham have thrived, with Abraham especially becoming the most lethal striker in Serie A.

Mourinho has always had a reputation for managing the best squads in club football and giving his squads an identity built around winning titles and while they won the Europa Conference League last year and secured a title, you can feel it's different this time around. This isn't the Mourinho who stays three years and bolts. This isn't volatile Mourinho who is cutting pressers and using quotes like "that's three for me, two for them, so respect." This time, it's evident that Mourinho took on a project and is building a project he truly believes in and he is taking his time to perfect it. He has brought in statement pieces all over the pitch. Dybala, Gini in the midfield, Mike Svilar to be a backup goalie, and possibly Andrea Belotti to add striker depth. This is a serious project and something being built for the present and the future.

Roma is dangerous, but while they can win now, this is a team built to last. In a crazy way, this is Mourinho's legacy stop, as weird as that sounds. A man who has won everywhere in the world and won the Champions League multiple times over has chosen Roma to be the definitive mark of his legacy on football. Sometimes, football makes romantics out of us all.

Transfers:

Tiago Pinto, Roma's Director of Football made himself into a God to Roma fans this transfer window. If not God-like, then at the very least? God-adjacent. Numerous big-name signings have been brought in by Pinto, without letting any star players go, which has been the case in the past.

After numerous reports of Paulo Dybala being expected to join Inter Milan, the Argentine decided to make the switch to the Italian capital after becoming impatient with the Nerazzurri management. The 28-year-old arrives on a free transfer from Juventus and will be eager to prove himself after struggling to find consistency in recent seasons. If he finds his form again, which you can argue he never lost- but people are FICKLE- then this is a monumental signing for Roma.

Young, technically gifted, with creativity and a nose for goal, Dybala was let down by Juve's management and their inability to get proper strike partners who weren't already 34 years old+ (Ronaldo), finally getting hurt after carrying that team for years. Yet, people act like Dybala wasn't consistently leading the team in goal contributions, consistently providing 10+ goals when healthy, and consistently getting you 10+ assists. There was an unfair narrative built around Dybala being cooked even though he had no help, and people feasted on the narrative, tabloids especially, publicizing the "fall from grace" of a talented player while never acknowledging that he was never given a proper team around him that ever played to his strengths. And for the record? No, giving him a washed Ronaldo is not giving him a squad. Stop that narrative right now, because it's horseshit regurgitated by CR7 fanboys who don't want to admit the man is a washed 37-year-old who has been an albatross at the last two places he's called his footballing home (Juventus & Manchester United)

Back to the point, Pinto added some much-needed depth by bringing in Lille right-back Zeki Celik for €7 million and signing Manchester United free agent Nemanja Matić, who has worked with Mourinho previously at Chelsea and Old Trafford. Goalkeeping duo Pau López and Robin Olsen have both been sold and replaced by promising Benfica goalkeeper Mile Svilar, Cengiz Ünder and Alessandro Florenzi made their loan moves to Marseille and AC Milan permanent while Henrikh Mkhitaryan left on a free transfer to join Inter. And as mentioned, Georginio Wijnaldum has joined from Paris Saint Germain on a loan-to-buy deal and Andrea Belotti will sign a three-year deal after leaving Torino this summer to add additional depth. When Gini and Belotti are depth moves? Pinto did great.

One To Watch:

Dybala will get the headline this year, but Tammy Abraham arrived from Stamford Bridge for £34m last season and has become Roma’s most important player within the space of a season. The 24-year-old striker amassed 27 goals and five assists across 53 matches last season and finished joint-third in the Serie A scoring race with 17 goals. To put it lightly, he was a man amongst boys and he DOMINATED games by himself. He was lethal, playing an integral part in Roma’s Conference League campaign, and has since been linked with a potential move back to the Premier League before being labeled untouchable by man in Roma's inner circle.

Scarily enough, you can argue that Abraham has never played with an outright 10 behind him or a proper striker partner. Usually left alone to lead the line, it's incredible to think that a strike partnership with Belotti or the idea of Dybala feeding him is currently on the table. Abraham will score 30 this year before it's all said and done.

Outlook:

This team is rising at the right time and all the pieces are coming together. They've added necessary pieces to strengthen the team, and young players have gained more experience and statement signings with notable talent have joined the team. The only thing that could hurt Roma is the number of competitions they find themselves in, but this team has the experience and the capability to withstand it.

Their leadership core has fought through European campaigns and they've added known winners in Dybala and Wijnaldum, guys who have won domestic titles and UCL titles, respectively. Moreover, you have Mourinho who is a serial winner, a man who has locked down the treble before, in Italy no less, has won the Champions League multiple times, and knows what it takes to reach the summit of world football. If ever there was a manager for a city looking for success, it's Mourinho and the truth is, they're probably not done. January's market will be interesting in they're close in the hunt. Mourinho is looking for that last grasp at the chalice, that last grasp at the throne, and his charges at Roma are just as hungry and salivating at the bit with a dangerous and talented squad that has added talent, depth, and firepower across the board. AC Milan has a dogfight on its hands.

Evens Arts Prize 2021

The Evens Arts Prize 2021 is awarded to choreographer and dancer Marlene Monteiro Freitas, with a Special Mention of the Jury for artist Andrea Büttner.

The biennial Prize honours artists who engage with the challenges of contemporary Europe. The laureates were selected by an independent jury from nominations put forward by 25 representatives of cultural institutions across Europe.

The Jury of the 2021 edition was composed of Daniel Blanga Gubbay, Artistic Co-Director of Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Brussels; Manuel Borja-Villel, Director of Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid; Carlo Chatrian, Artistic Director of the Berlinale, Berlin; Anne Hilde Neset, Director of Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo; and Christine Standfest, Dramaturg, Curator, ImPulsTanz Festival, Vienna. The Jury Chair is Ernest Van Buynder, Honorary Chairman, M KHA, Antwerp.

The Laureate Marlene Monteiro Freitas (born in 1979, Cape Verde) is a choreographer, artist, and the founder of the Lisbon-based production and dance company P.OR.K. With a career spanning over 15 years, Freitas has earned a reputation for creating visually and sensorially rich performances.

“Freitas invests in the construction of worlds where lush, evil, illness, madness and opulence are underlined – excesses that the choreographer proposes us to meet through the confrontation with surprising visual scenarios and performers’ strong physical language,” explain Tiago Rodrigues, Director, Festival d’Avignon, and Cristina Grande, Head of the Performing Arts Department, Serralves Foundation, Porto, who nominated Freitas for the Prize.

Freitas' recent creations include Pierrot Lunaire (2021), which premiered at Wiener Festwochen, Mal – Embriaguez Divina (2020), 2020 Bacchae - Prelude to a Purge (2017). In 2018 La Biennale di Venezia awarded the artist the Silver Lion for Dance.

Jury statement The jury recognised the singular and compelling force of the choreographic worlds created by the artist Marlene Monteiro Freitas. Daring and experimental, their sensorial immediacy draws discrete audiences into contact with a dazzling interplay of bodies, energies and effects.

The jury particularly praised the artist’s rich and layered scrutiny of European cultural traditions and their legacies. Often merging genres, myths and allegories, the works deftly undermine implicit power structures, reimagining traditions not as fixed absolutes, but as fluid encounters between subjectivities.

The Special Mention of the Jury The jury chose to award a Special Mention to Berlin-based visual artist Andrea Büttner. The Special Mention distinction was introduced in 2019 as a way to recognise outstanding work and contributions to the European art scene.

Andrea Büttner (1972, Stuttgart, Germany) connects art history with social and ethical issues, exploring broad-ranging topics such as poverty, work, community, belief, botany, Catholicism, and philosophy. Her work is based on thorough research into specific areas or situations and is articulated through diverse formats including printmaking, sculpture, painting, photography, and video. "The artistic project of Andrea Büttner proposes a bridge between different historical eras and worldviews, showing ways of being together that arise out of the gaps that divide people", explains Lars Bang Larsen, Co-Director, Art Hub, Copenhagen, who nominated the artist for the Prize.

Shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2017, Büttner had numerous solo exhibitions at institutions worldwide, including Kunstmuseum Basel (2023), Bergen Kunsthall (2018); Hammer Museum (2017); Kunsthalle Wien (2016); Walker Art Center (2015); Tate Britain (2014). She teaches at Kunsthochschule Kassel and has authored several books.

Jury statement The Special Mention of the Jury is given to the artist Andrea Büttner for her rich, multifaceted work, that composes and dismantles relationships between cultural registers, philosophical and aesthetic traditions of Western modernity, and European histories of fascism and exploitation.

With her in-depth research into the systems of value and practices of craftmanship, her works weave intricate connections between dignity, shame, religion, care, and labour. The jury particularly noted Büttner’s ability to uncover the transformative potentials of collaborative processes, illuminating otherwise shrouded forms of resistance, togetherness, and community.

The Mafu Cage de Karen Arthur

Duas irmãs, a astrônoma Ellen Carpenter (Lee Grant) e a desenhista Cissy (Carol Kane) vivem em Los Angeles numa casa que parece a cópia de alguma selva em que viveram com o pai antropólogo quando eram crianças. Elas agora estão de luto pela morte dele e, enquanto Ellen é uma profissional dedicada, estudiosa do sol e cortejada por seu colega de trabalho David (James Olsen). Cissy, que visivelmente sofre de alguma perturbação emocional, vive todo seu tempo em casa com seus desenhos e parece se distanciar cada vez mais da realidade.

The Mafu Cage é um filme praticamente desconhecido que merece muito ser visto e comentado. O conheci quando Jéssica Reinaldo e Michelle Henriques falaram dele no podcast The Witching Hour e vou deixar o link do programa lá no final do texto. Desde então fiquei numa busca desenfreada para conseguir uma legenda e nada de encontrar mas…quem tem amigos que amam a sétima arte, tem tudo né. Agradeço a Tiago pela graça alcançada.

A direção fica a cargo de Karen Arthur com roteiro de Don Chastain e Éric Wesphal. Karen, além de diretora é produtora e atriz, dirigiu os longas, Legacy (1975), The Mafu Cage (1978) e Lady Beware (1987). Porém, a maior parte de seu trabalho é na tv dirigindo episódios para séries de TV e telefilmes.

A trama aparentemente simples, parece carregar subtextos interessantes e polêmicos sobre uma possível relação incestuosa das duas irmãs. Ellen praticamente abdicou de sua vida para ser aquela que cuida da irmã, a qual não consegue se desvencilhar da vida que seu pai teve. Tudo ela quer emular a vivência que tiveram na África como trancafiar orangotangos que acabam sendo mortos em atos de fúria de Cissy. No jardim da casa enquanto corpos dos primatas estão sendo enterrados com a cumplicidade de Ellen, Cissy se entrega a birras e antigos rituais de tribos africanas para que a irmã consiga um novo Mafu com o amigo da família e criador da espécie, Zom (Will Geer). Quem se interessa por filmes de horror com abordagens psicanalíticas, The Mafu Cage é um prato cheio. É muito interessante o jogo de tensão entre as irmãs e perceber que Ellen já não aguenta mais. A irmã ouve ela confessando a Zom sobre a vontade de se entregar ao colega de trabalho que a corteja, mas tem medo de se afastar e deixar Cissy num hospício. No entanto, é justamente num momento em que Ellen se afasta para fazer uma viagem profissional que acontece o momento mais tenso e doloroso da trama: a ruptura da realidade de Cissy.

Além dessas questões de gênero, há ainda o subtexto racial, pois são duas irmãs brancas, mas uma delas a Cissy, é quem mais se apropria de elementos, ritos, rituais, maquiagens e músicas tribais de uma cultura a qual não lhe pertence, mas ela por ter crescido nesse meio, se sente inserida, acolhida e pertencente. Apesar de ficar mais à vontade com os animais, mais especificamente com seus Mafus que prende numa gaiola dentro de casa, mimada, não suporta ser contrariada e não ser atendida em suas vontades. Suas frustrações são descontadas nos pobres dos animais, coitados. É irritante em vários momentos e mesmo torcendo que ela consiga vencer essa barreira da fuga emocional, a cada minuto é nítido que ela vai se perdendo e se distanciando de atitudes mais racionais até colapsar por completo.

The Mafu Cage é incrível, estranho, fascinante e eu poderia escrever aqui trezentos adjetivos para definir esse filme. Karen Arthur se dedicou com afinco na pesquisa sobre o tema de mulheres e colapso mental. Passou semanas num hospital psiquiátrico e as peças de arte que decoram a casa das irmãs, ela conseguiu emprestado em galerias de arte. Espero sinceramente que redescubram essa obra. Espero também que ouçam o programa de Jéssica e Michelle pois traz muitas referências teóricas e comentários ricos sobre o filme.
