a face in the crowd {basketball club}
anonymous requested: The basketball club members reaction when their crush suddenly attended their basketball game. Like they weren't aware at first but at the middle of the game they turned and suddenly saw their crush.
OKAY HI this took me forever i am sooo sorry! it was one of my first requests too and I’ve liked it this whole time so I hope you’re still sticking around! I just get distracted easily (and when I try to write these longer HCs I frequently get through half of one and then just. stare at my screen for an hour lmfao) BUT it’s here now! Also to my Floyd lovers out there - I like making him funny (and what’s funny to me is probably not that funny to a lot of other people) but I also don’t want to make him a one note comic relief boy so I’m sorry if this was a weird one to try and give him some depth to but uh. I sure did try lol please accept my offering
(adding after writing Jamil’s) HIS GOT A LITTLE DEEP TOO...it’s nothing too severe but I just got in an introspective mood I guess? Ace stans I’m sorry I wrote his first so his isn’t quite so deep but I MIGHT have a little something something for you later <3 in due time
!! information !!
characters: ace + floyd + jamil
reader: gn!
cw: none! unless you need a swear warning in which case Jamil and Floyd both have one (1)

• • • • • • • Ace Trappola
He has no reason to be as surprised as he is, considering he's been inviting you to every. single. game. every time he could. But each week it was "oh I already promised Epel I'd watch his Spelldrive game," or "The tweels roped me into working with them all weekend. Drop by for a pre-game snack?" The time you told him that Deuce had enlisted your help to study for Crewel's upcoming alchemy exam, Ace was unnecessarily petty (or, as he'd put it, reasonably upset) for half the week before dropping it.
As usual, he did extend an invitation to you for this upcoming game, but you noticed he was rather dismissive about it. Ace told himself that it’d be whatever if you showed up and he’s just trying to keep the otherworldly student up to date with student affairs, but honestly he’s a little afraid you’d notice how he sulks over your absences when he thinks about them too much, so he keeps the invitations coming as a cover.
This time, though, you finally have a free moment and decide to see what all the fuss is about. Not only does Ace have a habit of hyping himself up, but the halls have started to echo the murmurings of a really successful season and a chance at tournaments. It’s about time you go to support one of your besties (and crush?), and you need to know what the hullabaloo is about!!
Deuce accompanies you, and Cater shows up as people are filing in, stealing a spot next to you. You’re too caught up in conversation to actually tell Ace you’re there, but you figure you can text him and let him know after the game is over. Once the game actually starts, you get swept up in the crowd’s cheers and shout out whenever they do.
While not the best player on the team, Ace definitely stands out. Every move he makes is confident, even if sometimes it ends up with the ball in the other team’s hands. It’s hard not to get excited when he’s clearly got so much energy.
Whether you knew the rules of the game before or not, you’ve gotten the hang of the basics by now. Halftime is just seconds away and the lead keeps switching between teams. There’s still plenty of time to bring in a win, but it’s so much better to resume with a lead, right?
Moments before the buzzer sounds, Ace takes a hopeful shot for the hoop. The entire gym seems to suck in a breath, watching in anticipation as the ball seems to move in slow-motion. The piercing sound of the noisy buzzer reverberates against your skull, and immediately after…the ball bounces off the rim.
While the teams head over to their benches, both sides of the bleachers erupt into cheers, energetic shouts, or general clapping. Cater and Deuce are just as into it as you are, fists in the air and fire in their eyes. Not expecting anybody to be able to make out your voice over the din, you cup your hands around your mouth and let out a single cheer for Ace.
His head shoots up. You can see him get jostled by his teammates when he stops so abruptly. It’s up to you whether you wave at him or get sudden sheepish, but before he can send you a look somebody urges him to move and takes his attention away. For a moment, you feel embarrassed and start to worry that you’ve thrown off his jam.
How wrong you are! When Ace gets back on the court he’s got an added pep in his step. He’s bounding across the court and making narrow moves around the other team that leave your little group in the stands in awe. Deuce wonders where he got his energy reserve, but Cater elbows you and wiggles his eyebrows once he finally captures your attention for a moment.
When the game is over, Ace is the first one back in the court, already milling around people, looking for you. He makes a beeline for you once he finds you, calling out and asking for you to lavish him in praise for his amazing performance before he even reaches you. (Don’t mention how he missed a large portion of the rather risky baskets he tried to make - oh well, at least his footwork was nice?)
Ace is definitely the type to throw an arm around your shoulders and only try to get closer the more you protest that he’s sweaty and gross. You can hear Cater snapping a thousand photos while Deuce sighs at Ace’s antics and wrangles a restless Grim for you. (After making the two of you pose for an only mildly awkward smiling photo, Cater promises to send all of the photos to both of you. You are unashamed at saving the good ones, but Ace has to hold a pillow to cover his face while he saves his favorite ones that night. If it’s ever found out that he’s kept them, at least nobody will know how hard it was to pick a favorite.)

• • • • • • • Floyd Leech
Floyd asks you to the very first game. He’s already pretty hot and cold when it comes to his participation in basketball, so his club members subtly pushed the idea into his head to invite you. Surely, he’d be a little more reliable if he was trying to impress someone in the stands! So invite you he does, asking you with the usual lilt to his voice, teetering on the edge of boredom and playfulness, perfectly masking that he actually does care about your answer.
Hey, don’t look at him like that! Floyd didn’t really realize it before, but the few people that he actually likes having around have…kinda been with him for a lot. Jade has always been a reliable brother, making an effort to support Floyd in whatever catches his interest when there aren’t work-related engagements to take care of, and Azul always asks what the two are up to, even if he masks his interest behind a veil of “checking for scheduling conflicts” or “making sure they aren’t embarrassing him by association.” So, like, it’s not a huge deal if you can’t make it to one game, but maybe it would feel like something was missing if you weren’t, okay?
Floyd isn’t amused by your lukewarm answer - “I’ll have to double check my schedule, but if I’m available I’ll be there!” - but he gets it. He did ask kind of last minute, so maybe you do have plans during the game. He shrugs you off and says that if you don’t tell him you’ll definitely be there, he can’t guarantee he’ll definitely be there.
Still, at the club meetings leading up to the game, he’s moodier and has walked out multiple times. Ace winds up begging you to go, and you eventually relent. By the time you decide to go, though, it’s too late to let Floyd know. You intend on at least waving to him before the game, but Jade finds you first.
“We wouldn’t want to distract him while he’s warming up, lest he wind up getting distracted and hurt himself on the court. Let’s just wait for him to find you, yes?”
(Jade just wants to fuck with his brother a little bit. You decide it’s not your place to pry into whatever sibling spat they’ve got going on and follow him to the bleachers.)
The game starts off on a rough patch before the seconds can count down on the timer. As one of the tallest players (and most skilled when he wants to put in the work), Floyd was supposed to do the tip-off…but he didn’t even try to do it. It was a little amusing, actually, to watch neither side of the court move immediately for the ball, but the other player caught on to Floyd’s mood quickly and tipped the ball toward their team. Somebody on the benches yelled at Floyd, and though his body blocked it from your view, you were pretty sure he sent them a rude hand gesture in response.
“Uhh…how much longer do we have to watch this?” You asked Jade after a short while had passed. He had already stopped you from calling out to cheer Floyd on, instead watching his brother suffer on the sidelines with a disconcerting joy.
“Don’t worry. I have a feeling he’ll notice here soon enough.”
Somebody called a time out, and the gymnasium erupted into cheers to fill the silence. Jade didn’t call out particularly loud - in fact, despite the excitement around him, he didn’t appear ruffled at all - but was still somehow able to catch his brother’s attention. Floyd glared at him and Jade pointed towards you. The glower Floyd sent your way before he realized who Jade was pointing to was enough to send a shiver down your spine - until Floyd immediately brightened up once he saw who he was looking at.
Someone noticed the change in Floyd’s demeanor and quickly sent him back into the game. From then on it was smooth sailing, with Floyd making impressive plays the whole time. Even though you weren’t entirely sure what he played like regularly, you were positive he was adding some extra flair to his movements, though the thought of it being for your sake sends butterflies through your stomach.
If there’s an after-game pep talk, Floyd doesn’t listen to it and instead finds you and Jade. Immediately he’s slumped over you, musing happily. “Shrimpy, you actually came!”
“Yeah! I wasn’t sure if I could make it, but I found some time at the last minute.”
Floyd backs away from you so he can dart his eyes between you and Jade suspiciously. “You weren’t hiding from me on purpose, were you?”
How are you supposed to answer that? You didn’t want to, but Jade made you! Thankfully, Jade placed a hand on your shoulder and said, “Now, Floyd, we don’t want to scare the prefect or they’ll never come to another game again.”
That got Floyd’s attention. “Oh! You’re planning on coming next week, too?”
Congratulations on your new status as the basketball club’s lucky charm! If Floyd isn’t begging you to attend the next game, the rest of the team is. You better clear your schedule entirely once tournaments come around…

• • • • • • • Jamil Viper
HA! You thought he’d ask you? You think he would care if you were at his games or not?? How foolish! How amusing! And how dreadfully inaccurate your assumptions are!!!
At least, that’s what Jamil thinks to himself when Kalim confronts him about how often he’s brought up his club around you. But the truth - and it is a truth that Kalim has, unfortunately, pierced into the heart of - is that Jamil actually, kinda, maybe, sorta does care that you attend. At least one!
Listen, Jamil is in a tight spot re: how in the world to people view him now. The Scarabia dorm seems to have been won over by Kalim’s pleas to give him a chance at redemption, at least for now, and while a lot of people know about his overblot, they either don’t particularly care or have been involved enough with you that they know how this song and dance goes and are just…leaving the door open for him. He still has a reputation to fix, and he plans to do it through small but sure efforts. Doing well in his group-oriented club activities just happens to be a rather easy step in his plan. And if one of the people he happens to win over is you…
Before his thoughts can deviate too far, he shakes them away. It would be embarrassing to ask you straight up to attend, especially if it’s been apparently obvious that he’s been dropping hints. Sometimes people would say that the hallmark deliberation of Scarabia ends up being way too convoluted, and with the mess of thoughts in his head right now, Jamil was tempted to agree.
The game is in the second quarter when Jamil starts to get irritated.
Normally, this doesn’t happen. He’s quite used to Kalim causing a scene wherever he goes, and his own basketball games are no different. Kalim doesn’t make it to all of them, but when he is in attendance, his cheers are the only ones Jamil can hear. It’s probably just a side effect of how attuned he is to Kalim at all times, but that reasoning doesn’t make it less unpleasant.
If he was as uncontrollable as Floyd, Jamil might entertain the thought of stopping the game and throwing the basketball full-force in Kalim’s direction. But alas, he was back to having an iron grip on his impulses, so he merely slid a cool glare at Kalim.
When he saw you cheering him on beside Kalim, he froze over instantly.
On the outside, he appeared as collected as ever, his perfectly smooth footwork never faulting. But instead of taking the shot, he passed the ball to the nearest and most capable open player, trying desperately to slow his beating heart. One of the other team’s players gave him a weird look, and Jamil waved his concern off.
He really needed to work on keeping his composure in matters that pertained to you.
After suffering for another minute and being pulled out for a brief water break - “That’s weird,” Kalim says next to you, “He almost never needs to be replaced in the middle of a game….” - Jamil is back on his feet and performs the rest of the game flawlessly. Nobody on the outside really notices a difference, but he simultaneously feels a massive pressure and on top of the world.
After the game is over, he actually stops by to talk to you, even though it means also talking to Kalim. The both of you are raving about the game, and he’s glad that he can blame any displays of how flustered he feels on being tired from the game. After talking to you for a while, the three of you walking very slowly to the hall of mirrors, you eventually part from them with a promise to catch another game and teasingly telling Kalim that you’re going to take the spot of Jamil’s number one fan. Not for the first time, Jamil wishes he had a hood to hide in, but is glad he can’t make it obvious how much you’re affecting him.
It isn’t until both he and Kalim are inside their dorm that Kalim turns to him specifically. “So, I assume this means that you’ll let me help you woo them?”
“What?! I wasn’t - that wasn’t - we weren’t-” Jamil keeps restarting his sentences, feeling as though Kalim isn’t listening to him despite the fact that he isn’t really saying anything. Then Kalim actually stops listening, chuckling to himself and turning away from Jamil while humming happily. Jamil vaguely recognizes it to be a love song.
Damn Kalim and his emotional insight. Why does it only come out at the most inconvenient times?
Also hot take but he's totally the most likely to have a "Now or Never" moment with Troy and Gabriella from HSM3 just to put that out there (Ace wouldn’t turn his attention back to the game lbr and also I just like the image with Jamil more)

Sometimes I read posts on here and I realize that things I thought were fairly universal aren't, actually.
Got a post saved in my drafts about critical thinking so I can check the notes and think about it. It features a story about a high school teacher - note high school, not elementary - doing a really really basic exercise about critical thinking. And the notes are full of people saying wow I wish I had a teacher like that and great teaching and that sort of thing. It also mentions the students being a bit upset at first and accusing the teacher of confusing them, because they automatically believed anything the teacher said and when the teacher offered two sides of something and asked them to research and make up their own minds it weirded them out.
I am trying to remember if I have any stories from school but honestly I don't remember my classes very much. The formative experience from my childhood that I do remember and that I very often reference is when I read every book the local library had on the Holocaust when I was 9.
Wait....I am remembering something from sixth grade now. A research paper on escapes from POW camps during WWII. And an 8th grade group report on..I want to say WWII because if we got to pick our war of course I went with that one...that the teacher said my group should kiss my feet for. I'm not sure though because I think I remember playing a Johnny Horton song for the presentation and the only Johnny Horton song I can remember right now about war is The Battle Of New Orleans which is about the War of 1812. Wait wait, there's Sink The Bismarck about WWII!
Anyway, my point is that high school seems really late for learning about propaganda and learning to tell decent sources from obvious propaganda. But then like I've said before, I graduated in 1999 so I don't know what school is like now with NCLB.
Also I went to rural working class schools and the local library was of course a small rural library, so nothing special or particularly privileged or anything. So I never think that I was particularly privileged or weird or an outlier until I see Tumblr posts like that one where a lot of people agree that they had experiences completely different than mine, and I'm like ohhhh this explains a lot about the internet.
I bet they don't even let them watch ACC basketball tournament games in class anymore. Our teachers would roll in those TVs and we'd get to watch the games as long as we also quietly did our work.

Vagueblogging again!
I think a lot about the argument fandom racists make. It's always "fandom isn't activism," "go do some real activism," etc. etc.
Like, one -- I think quite a few of us have done "real" activism. Organizing, protesting, fundraising, information-sharing, all that good stuff. Especially in these past few years. You can't be Asian American without having at least brushed with activism lately.
Two -- telling someone that what they said hurts or disrespects your culture is not activism. That's literally just an everyday interaction. You could have learned something and accepted it, but the moment you dismissed it and dug your heels in, then yeah, you're making it a way bigger deal than it has to be.
Three -- Asian Americans have always organized, protested, and advocated for better rights on all fronts. The bill in Florida recently passed is part of a years-long effort to make Asian American history part of school curricula (its effects are for another post entirely), Asian Americans in various organizations have been tirelessly doing research, petitioning and lobbying for better healthcare and economic aid access. The burst of Asian American shows like "Beef" and "Everything Everywhere All At Once" are part of a DECADES-long push to have our stories told in ways that aren't stereotypical and degrading. Not to mention to make sure we get equal pay in the workplace.
People have always committed hate crimes against us, but because of COVID, it jumped to a point where there was actual media coverage outside of the community. It got so big, no one could ignore us anymore. It was good to get aid from outside the community, but even now, the people organizing self-defense classes, patrolling Asian dominant neighborhoods and walking with elders so they can go places without being attacked, the people organizing food drives for those of us who are lower-income, raising money for the victims of hate crimes, fighting for us in our court cases against attackers, pushing for our voices to be heard, are us Asian Americans.
It's a lot of work. It's also a lot of work to rally people to our cause, because so many people outside the community, especially white people, will not listen, let alone help in any meaningful way, unless you convince them why they personally should care. To be BIPOC at all in North America is to do the emotional labor that white people think you owe them.
So tell me. If true activism is so important to you, why aren't you doing it?
And you know how I know you aren't doing it? Because if you can't be bothered to listen to an Asian person in small, casual, everyday interactions, what makes you think you're equipped to help us advocate for large social change?
