To ME, The Iliad and The Odyssey are about the different reactions to trauma and "hate".

The Iliad is about how a man gets destroyed by hatred. Achilles is "destroyed" metaphorically because his hatred and grief caused him to lose his "humanity". Hector is killed by a man filled with so much hatred (Achilles). Both men are "gone".

The Odyssey, being what happens directly after, is about how a man can come BACK from such hatred. Menelaus and Nestor, while still in pain from the war (the time, friends, and family they lost), are still able to move forward and live normal lives. We watch this happen in real time through Odysseus.

Odysseus' name means to hate and be hated, something he's been probably doing since he left Ithaca to a degree. You could even see the slaughter of the suitors as being the "final fight" he has to go through before the "healing". He gains back his humanity, kingdom, and identity by loving and being loved. (Niko's post about Odysseus and his identity. It delves further into all that well!)

Some people are lost to war and some people CAN come back from it. While the ancients (of every culture as well!) didn't have the semi-universal term PTSD yet, they knew damn well people who have experienced trauma tend to be "different" afterward and had their own stories and even some "remedies"

Other ancient works, such as those by Hippocrates, describe soldiers who experienced frightening battle dreams. (Source, whole article gives more info on ancient PTSD too!)

Celsus, a Roman doctor described a condition named Insania sine fibre.

In Ancient Mesopotamia, “They described hearing and seeing ghosts talking to them, who would be the ghosts of people they’d killed in battle – and that’s exactly the experience of modern-day soldiers who’ve been involved in close hand-to-hand combat.” (Source)

This is my own interpretation, but in a way, I think the Epic Cycle is...showcasing that. The Iliad shows how trauma can "end" a person. And The Odyssey is kind of a way to give some hope to folks in a "Hey, you CAN get better. You CAN have your life back."

this is random but one of my favorite ALNST joke OCs is a girl who had a massive crush on Ivan and was able to date him for a little while because he felt bored enough to accept her. what follows is the most excruciating insanity inducing half-relationship in existence (they lasted 3 weeks before she gave up trying to understand him)

IMO the worst thing you can do with your character is make him a butt-monkey and then making him just a prick just to justify the beatings.

(yeah because Eddy in earlier seasons was already the writters' punching bag before starts his downward spiral in season 3).

off the top of my head i can't think of any examples before s3 where eddy is getting gratuitously walloped, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. yeah he always loses in the end, but people root for the underdog, etc. if things ever worked out for him there wouldn't be much of a show.

but yeah i just kind of take it for what it is i guess. i don't really care for eddy torture but come on, sometimes it's funny. and justified. i watched a few s3 episodes recently, namely brother can you spare an ed/the day the ed stood still, and jesus christ he really is a little fucking demon. his difficult personality is on display from the get-go and definitely intensifies as the show goes on. i don't know what the writers' intentions were but it makes sense to me that his unhinged behavior escalates all the way up to the end of bps when he finally gets his reality check.

A Little House Sampler contains an interview between Rose and Almanzo from when Rose was trying to gather information for her book set in 1870s Dakota, and let's just say that Almanzo did not share his wife's talent for crafting detailed reminiscences.

What were the early saloons like? Saloons. Did they have mahogany bars and mirrors? Yes. Paintings behind the bar, swinging doors, frosted windows, or anything like that? Paintings, yes; swinging doors, no. Brass rails? Brass cuspidors? Yes. Were they poolrooms or were poolrooms separate places? Yes.

Half of the interview is Rose just desperately trying to pull any kind of detail out of Almanzo. Which is impressive given that she typed out the interview and mailed it to him to fill out--she must have known what her father was like.

The most voluble he gets is an entire paragraph describing the different types of prairie grass for her (based on which ones make the best hay.)

There are flashes of humor.

What was your attitude toward the local banker. He was a whole fellow. We would say, "Hello, Tom," but when it came to borrowing money, it was 3 percent a month.

We also have a surprisingly sad moment.

What in regard to your claim, gave you the most satisfaction during the first few years? I mean moments of satisfaction, such as finishing the shanty, putting up the team after the sod was broken, or seeing the wheat up, something like that. Those special times that one remembers of looking at something and feeling good. As, for instance, the day on Rocky Ridge when the first mortgage was paid off, and we said, "Now the place is ours!" It must have been a grand moment when you walked into the bank and handed that money to old man Freeman. Must have been moments like that, in homesteading. To save me, I can't remember of anything except that when we thrashed the first crop that was the best crop we ever had, but it was before we had much land broke up. My life has been mostly disappointments.

I also really like this last question because it's drives home that this is just a daughter talking to her dad.

If I know you, you had a fit of extravagance now and then. What did you spend money on? When you had it in you pocket and just felt like spending it? Nowadays a man would buy a new car. Remember one time when you did something like that? And hardly dast face Mama Bess with whatever you'd brought? That would in the in 1880s, but it's all the same if it was something you could have bought in 1870s. Or maybe it was one time that Roy went on a spending spree, bought something you didn't have to have, but just wanted to have. I bought a top buggy in 1882. I bought a $50 nickel-plated harness in spring 1882. I am sorry I could not remember more but it has been a long time and things did not impress me when they happened like they did some people.

That last line sums up the situation pretty well. But when you're looking into the background of a series put together by two women, it is fun to see the man of the household get a chance to speak for himself.

yes!!! it's me!!! i'm ryomina fan (one of many)!!! thank you for visiting my askbox, i'll do my best to answer all of the questions because it always makes me happy to see that ryomina sparks joy for people! :D

...this got really long because i like linking to things, so i'm putting it under a read more (IM VERY NORMAL ABOUT THEM)

how did i get into it? i got into persona 3 around august 2021 through the movies- at the time my only experience with the persona series was with P5R / P5S / P5D. p3 was the one that interested me the most (i thought minato was very pretty + i caught wind that the themes of the game were very resonant with people). i picked the movies over the game because i'm a guy who plays games at a snails pace, haha.

admittedly, i did latch onto ryomina because of the scenes in the third and fourth movie (i have mentioned in the tags of this art i drew how much i felt like i was exploding and blasting off to the moon watching it).

but what really dug me into the ryomina hole (and what has kept me there) was thinking about how much ryoji encapsulates the themes of p3- and how interconnected his fate is with minato. i wrote some musings about their dynamic here, if you're interested!

tl;dr: what if we were both boys and we were mirror images of each other and i inherited your kindness and looks but god doomed our narrative even though we're soulmates

on ryomina fanworks recommendations:

regarding fics: i'm going to assume that you've probably read the fics that have the highest kudo ratings on them, so i won't really be listing those.

a personal favorite fic that i always hold close to my heart is Eurydice's Vow by crescentmoontea, which explores the idea of ryomina in p5r's third semester. this was the first fic i read about ryomina and it made me tear up lots...

i also think a lot about I Alone Await You by Nail_gun, literally scrumptious writing that captures the ryomina dynamic so so well. actually check out Nail_gun's other ryomina fics while you're at it too!

other fun fic i'm fond of: can't get my mind out of those memories (what were they?) by foxmulder_whereartthou. ryoji being homeless lives rent free in my head and it's all because of this fic. there's a bunch of other fun ryominas from the same author too (i still need to read them)

BkZa555 also has some fun AU scenarios if you're into that too, notably with Zagreus (P5-Setting, Ryoji focus) and The Definition of Insanity (TIME LOOP fuckery!), but they're currently ongoing.

these were some ones that came to my mind first- as i have the strongest recollection reading them. admittedly i haven't really been reading fic this year, so i don't have many recommendations from fic that came out this year. but if you're so inclined to let ryomina consume your soul, i definitely recommend giving the newer works in the ryomina tag a look-see and see if it strikes your fancy!

as a side note, i do have a few ryomina fics that i've bookmarked on my ao3 here, though i have to say that i'm not sure how well they hold up in terms of like... what i would seek out of a fic these days. but they made past me happy so i bookmarked them, LOL. it's kind of outdated (my collection of fic recs has my old username *disintegrates*).

regarding doujinshi: i have not read all the ryomina doujinshi available, but as a starting point, please take a look at this list from pandora-scans from livejournal!

notably, this is where you can find the strawberry-chan say good bye doujin- which features a small and cute comic from shuji sogabe (the p3/p4 manga artist), as well as other artists. the existence of this doujinshi is the funniest thing to me because it's like "HEY if you're wondering what the volume 8 cover is really gay it's because sogabe contributed to a ryomina doujin." this fact makes my head spin (positive). it explains a lot about the manga.

regarding persona side material:

i know you didn't ask for these but i thought that i mine as well list these too, since i feel that the side materials have some fun expansions on ryoji and minato's interactions. i haven't... watched/read all of these but, hey, i like to share these things!

thank you! that was a fun excercise - it's always interesting to analyse why styles look Like That! some of it is technical (chunky thick black outlines w/ no broken lineart for easy point-and-click colour filling for a 70 page comic) others are more subtle (everything has 3 shadow tones more or less and you can have shadows WITHIN shadows which is crazy to me...i never do that in my personal art haha) I was learning how to draw people for the first time by looking at tf2 comics 12+ years ago so its makes sense that there's a bit of influence hanging around as the bedrock of my style even now

A. Bellefleur; clearly embarrassed, will do it to avoid the backache of sleeping on the floor (and too nice to suggest you sleep on the floor), they make sure all of the curtains are well and truly closed before slipping onto their side of the bed. they make a pillow wall between you and couldn't be closer to their edge of the bed if they tried (really, you wake up in the morning to them half hanging off of it). if you try to bring it up after you've left, they dodge the topic with a practiced diplomacy.

K. Valiev; you don't even have to ask, they're already setting up on the floor, one pillow and the spare blanket is enough for them. they could be convinced to share, however it would take so long that neither of you would get much sleep anyways (it's probably easier to just let it happen). if you try to bring it up after you've left, they give you the sweetest smile and assure you that it really was no trouble at all and they hope you slept alright.

A. Caras; they're on the floor, with their back to you, using their arm as a pillow. if you offer the bed you'll be ignored, they might take the spare blanket if you put it by them, but they seem content on the floor. there's no convincing them to move at all, they will not share with you. if you try to bring it up after you've left, they barely acknowledge their floor sleep, simply asking what you want as if sleeping easily on the floor was just an average occurrence.

T. Bellefleur; they're in the bed already, if you're uncomfortable with sharing then in all likelihood you'll be the one on the floor. they aren't meaning to be cruel at all, they work on 'finders keepers' rules (or in this case 'first come, first served'). if you try to bring it up after you've left, they grin at you and wink cheekily, informing you that you should be faster into the room next time.

M. Serrel; they'll do whatever you want. you want the bed alone? that's okay, they can manage on the floor with the spare bedding. you don't mind sharing the bed? perfect, they'll take whatever side you don't want. they are a naturally touchy person, so they are more than happy to cuddle up next to you for warmth if you want that. if you try to bring it up after you've left they grin slyly and tease you about missing them in your bed, they are happy to share with you again if you get lonely.
