Hobbit/LOTR characters when their s/o is upset with them
yes i'm reusing this trope and i dont care its easy-- also lmk if u want more characters and which onessss :3
requests are open (seriously please give me ideas)
Thorin
Tumblr media
honestly
his reaction is so dependant on when you're upset with him
if its during the journey he will notice right away
he refuses to go to bed angry at each other
he makes time for you guys to talk every night
if its during his dragon sickness bit
yeah
no
he doesn't give a single shit
telling him that you're upset doesn't even do anything except make him mad
like you're wasting his time
AND
not looking for the stone so like
what the fuck are you doing
if we're talking like after the war
everybody lives au ofc
it probably takes him a little while to notice that you're upset if you don't flat out say anything
he's just slightly busy rebuilding a kingdom
honestly when he does notice or when you tell him
he feels bad
he decides it's time for a break
even if it's just for an hour or two
will take you through the halls just to talk through things
or he'll sit and have tea with you
honestly whatever you wanna do he's down
you are his only priority
if only for an hour
Fili
Tumblr media
i would say that he's probably pretty in tune with your emotions
hes a sweet dwarf
will make you tea because he knows your upset
sometimes forgets that hes a little shit
like doesnt realise that things he does can make people upset
let alone you
right over his head
you will have to sit him down and talk with him
he will feel bad immediately
will apologize
offers to make it up to you in any way he can
I feel like if this happens after like the battle and the reclaiming of his future kingdom
he might be a bit busy
but he wants to sit and talk to you every night before bed
even if its just for a few minutes
so when you went to bed without him one night
oh he knows he messed up
theres no way to misinterpret that
will wake you up with kisses and apologies
even if he doesn't know what he is apologizing for
hes just a big sweetie
Kili
Tumblr media
sweet boy
another kind of clueless one
id assume that you probably get upset at him sometime during the journey
while yes he is sweet
he can be kind of neglectful without meaning to be
he feels like he has to prove himself to his uncle because he is different from the other dwarves.
has a lot on his mind
i feel like he deffo neglects your relationship at times bc of it
which is why you pulled back
not pushing for affection as much as you did before
letting him get himself into bad situations
reminding him to eat/sharpen his sword
setting up his bedroll while he goes off to help with camp set up
it takes him a couple days to realize something is off
bc he totally doesnt realize how much you're actually looking out for him
it hits him one night after dinner that his bed roll isnt set up? and its not next to you? and you're already asleep?
wait when did he actually sit down and talk to you last?
doesn't sleep that night, just sits and watches you while thinking back on the past like week
as soon as you wake up he's by your side and asking if you guys could take a walk before the journey starts for that day
you agree
he immediately starts apologizing and explaining himself
i think the best way to deal with it is to like
have a nice sit down and talk it out
maybe not right at that moment but
eventually you guys have a long talk where you both talk about how you're feeling with the relationship and just emotionally and i think that solves a lot
like he lets u know just how insecure he is bc of how different he is
and you can talk about feeling neglected
at the end of it all he promises to put more effort but also wants you to know that you dont HAVE to do all those things for him to notice you/love you
very healthy tbh

Replying to your request for prompts:
Could you write a super cute fic of Reader being on the quest with the other dwarves, and having extreme menstrual cramps, and the dwarves being overly gentle, kind, and worrying? maybe even thorin uncharacteristically gently rubbing her back as she curls up beneath her blanket?
The Company When You Have Cramps
Tumblr media
warnings: female parts/female reader, menstruation, cramps, lmk if there's anything else !!
having woman parts sucked. and you were well aware of this when you set out on the journey to The Lonely Mountain with Thorin's company and prepared accordingly.
however, what you weren't prepared for, was cramps so bad they could rival the power of the gods (or so you thought).
you had carried on traveling for as long as could until the pain was quiet literally unbearable and you were ready to double over and just lay in the middle of the road.
at first you thought that the others would be mad or just tell you to suck it up and keep moving, but actually it was the exact opposite. they stopped and started setting up camp for the night and Oin even asked why you didn't speak up sooner seeing as you where in so much discomfort.
they didn't have any issues with you rolling out your bed mat and curling up like a ball with your blanket while they set up camp. you wished you help but you were in so much pain you didn't even think you could get up if you wanted to.
Bomber started cooking shortly after everything was set up and the fire was started. Oin had mixed together some herbs and it dulled the pain slightly but it wasn't much help, you were still in a lot of pain.
dwarves don't have a lot of women in their ranks, so imagine they take these struggles and the pain that women go though very seriously. they treat their women with the upmost respect and care.
as you laid there curled up with your head just barely peaking out from over your blanket Thorin came and squatted down in front of you. he has a sister, so I imagine he's pretty familiar with the struggles you're dealing with.
"how are you feeling?" he asks and after a moment you sit up properly next to him. "pretty shit actually."
he chuckles at your remark and hands you some warm soup, when you take it he moves his hand away to rub your back soothingly. the others are pretty preoccupied so they don't notice his sweet gesture, but you're very grateful for it.
Oin gives you more herbs after you eat and Ori joins you for a bit to talk and ask if you're alright. Fili and Kili also join you to joke around for a bit and try and get you to take your mind off the miserable state you were in. this actually works.
Bilbo also joins in on just talking with you when the others have to go do stuff like snuff out the fire or start their turn keeping watch. he brings you water and snacks/more food because food makes everything better. He is also the only one who thought to get something heated for you to put on your stomach.
he takes your water pack and as the fire is going down he places it close by and lets it heat up for a while, then he gives it you. he's very sad he doesn't have tea to offer you.
every once in a while someone will come up to you and ask if you're ok and if you need anything. just as everyone was getting ready for bed Thorin checks on you again and Oin gives you some herbs for sleep.
when you wake up you're convinced that whatever Oin gave you before you went to sleep wasn't just to ease pain and make you tired because you felt better than ever. you definitely had a spring in your step for the rest of the day.
the company was glad to see you feeling better and you helped them clean up and get back on the road. no one complained about having to stop and instead checked up on you throughout the journey to make sure you were still feeling ok.
anyway all of these guys are angles and I love them. they would def be worried and would tell you that if you're ever in pain from cramps or something again to let them know so they could stop for a bit and give you herbs.
(also if Gandalf was around when you were dealing with all that he def would've sat there with his pipe and let you smoke some of it. You know, just to keep you relaxed lol).

Bagginshield Fic Recs!
I've been wanting to do a bagginshield fic recs for a long time now so here are my favorite fics so far for this pairing! I will be adding on new ones as I go ❤
Fix-It AUs :
A Shot in the Dark by Silver_pup — 213.2k words
Summary: When he opens his eyes again, he finds himself in his old bed in his old home in his old body. Is this death? Or a trick of magic? Either way, Bilbo recognizes a second chance when he sees one, and this time his adventure with Thorin is going to go a bit differently.
An Expected Journey by MarieJacquelyn — 294.5k words
Summary:
“I just wish…”
“What do you wish?”
“I wish I could have changed it all.”
For years Bilbo has written about his adventures and told stories about his dealings with dwarves and dragons. To most it seemed like fanciful nonsense but to Bilbo it was all very real. A weight followed him home from his travels, one called regret. Now in his final moments Bilbo has a choice to make – go quietly into death’s embrace or go back again and face all the fear and pain for the chance to make things right?
Of course, change is a fickle thing and not everything can be done again as Bilbo is about to find out. In the end, it may not only be salvation that he’s fighting for.
Discovering Mr Baggins by Eareniel — 94.4k words
Summary: A.K.A. The Quest for Erebor:
The story of a Hobbit, told through the eyes of the dwarves.
Alternate Universes (Canon Divergence):
The Time for Home by Drenagon — 211.8k words
Summary: Bilbo Baggins doesn't fit in in the Shire. He's not a normal hobbit. That doesn't bother him.
Having his warnings ignored? Trying to help those who will not help themselves?
That bothers him.
The Color of Possibility by lindoreda — 17k words
Summary: When Bilbo puts himself between Thorin and Azog's blade, his mithril shirt protecting them both, it isn't long before some dwarves whisper that 'Oakenshield' might not be the best epithet for their king anymore. But for Bilbo, barred from Thorin's sight since the battle, this new epithet only adds to the sting. Spending his days caring for the recovering princes, Bilbo wonders how much more of this he can take, not suspecting his place at the center of a silent divide in the company.
The Nine Lives of Bilbo Baggins by captain (theoddoodisnude) — 15.3k words
Summary: He's not scared, but rather resigned. He doesn't want to die, not when he knows that it will be permanent, but he doesn't regret his actions. He's died many times on this journey; first for his Company, and then for people he could proudly call friends, who then turned into family.
And now Bilbo will die for them again.
For the first time in his life, he will also die for love.
Call You Home by northerntrash — 12k words
Summary: In which the Company are entirely too nosy about matters that are supposed to be a secret, and Bilbo learns that being concerned about propriety is overrated when you could be making friends instead.
The Naming of Hobbits by Margo_Kim — 9.7k words**
Summary: There's a certain point where you can no longer ask someone what their name is. Thorin isn't sure exactly when that point is, but he knows that it's probably some time before the person in question saves your life. On the far side of the Misty Mountains, Thorin realizes that he never quite caught the first part of Mr. Baggins' name, and he finds that it's astonishingly harder to learn than he would have thought. Fili, Kili, and Dwalin are no help whatsoever.
**I literally didn't laugh this hard in a long while. Definitely worth a read! (And another, let's be honest).
Post BotFA AUs:
A Cultural Misunderstanding (series) by Lindzzz — 96k words
Summary: In which Thorin pushes, and Bilbo doesn't know how to handle emotions and finds himself engaged without realizing it.
(A fluffy "everyone lives" marriage AU)
The Riven Crown by BeautifulFiction — 254.3k words
Summary: ‘We may have won the battle, but I fear the war with winter is just beginning.’
The aftermath of war is no laughing matter. Those who died must be honoured, those who are wounded must be healed, and those who remain need food and clothing, peace and sanctuary. With Thorin's life hanging in the balance, it is up to Bilbo and the rest of the Company to rule the rag-tag remnants of Erebor in his place.
Then there is the matter of the gold...
Can Bilbo save both king and kingdom, or is Erebor destined to fall deeper into ruin?
All The Rivers Sound In My Body by pibroch (littleblackdog) — 5.7k words
Summary: As much as he might like to cut a natty figure in a proper waistcoat and trousers with a reasonable inseam, Bilbo knew there were many more important things to bother with at the moment.
Rebuilding an entire dwarven kingdom, for one. And airing out the stink of dragon would be nice as well.
An Unexpected Proposal by Eareniel — 100k words
Summary: As Bilbo sat smoking in his empty hobbit hole, he couldn’t help but wonder – when did his life become so boring? Or better yet – when did his old life stop being enough?
He suspected the answer to that question lay somewhere around the time when he had refused Thorin Oakenshield’s offer of marriage.
Mother-Tongue by northerntrash — 24.9k words
Summary: Forget-me-not: a small flower, with four petals, which are normally found in shades of blue with a pink or white centre. These are traditional flowers of intent in the Shire, used to express true love, and remembrance.
In which Bilbo plans to leave Erebor, and Thorin tries to understand why.
Modern AUs:
For This by northerntrash — 8k words
Summary: Thorin Durin had lived in his new flat for approximately eighty four minutes when things started to go terribly, terribly wrong. The wrongness came in the form of a package, delivered to his door, wrapped in brown paper and string, with a small tag wishing him a very sincere welcome to the building.
Just To Be by northerntrash — 22.2k words
Summary: Thorin hadn’t really wanted to go on holiday. That was why he hadn’t been on one for over a decade – not, despite what his siblings might say, because he had problems letting go of work and letting other people have control over their own hotel, which definitely wasn’t his entire life, no matter what the opinions of his family might have been on the matter.
In which people go on holiday, and find a little bit of home.
The making of a story by northerntrash — 16k words
Summary: When Bilbo finds a case of old family photographs, he becomes determined to find the original owners: what he does not expect is to become quite so involved in their lives, or that those photographs should prove quite so important.
One-sided conversations by northerntrash — 94.9k words
Summary: "Thank you for listening," Thorin said, getting to his feet. "I hope to be able to return the favour, one day."
The man on the bed didn't respond, but since he'd been in a coma for longer than Thorin had known him, that wasn't entirely surprising.
Candid by northerntrash — 42.3k words
Summary: Thorin wasn't entirely sure why there was a six-foot candid photograph of him hanging in this exhibition, but he was going to wring the neck of whoever had put it there.
In which Bilbo is a photographer, Thorin an accidental model, and Gandalf just likes to make trouble for everyone.
Nothing Gold Can Stay by perkynurples — 296.3k words
Summary: Bilbo Baggins led a rather peaceful life, thank you very much, until an old acquaintance decided to turn it upside down, and he found himself agreeing to take a job that’s… let’s say not exactly up his alley, and might eventually cost him a little more than his treasured cozy lifestyle. Who would have thought tutoring a slightly menacing monarch’s more than slightly overbearing nephew could prove to be such an adventure?
Some Magical Occurence by Drenagon — 9.5k words
Summary: Bilbo could use some magic if he's going to get the annual Christmas event at Goldmine Books to run as planned.
Instead he has Bofur, Ori and a serious case of building panic.
Then the Durins arrive.
Plan B by Drenagon — 85.7k words
Summary: Plan B: an alternative strategy; a contingency plan, devised for an outcome other than the expected plan.
Or, sending an unqualified temp to act as Thorin Oakenshield's PA because no one qualified can put up with him.
(He'd say they can't meet his standards. Of course he would.)
Meet Bilbo Baggins. He just became Plan B.
idylls of the king by aerospaces — 16.1k words
Summary: Thorin a single parent/uncle, Bilbo babysits. Fili and Kili are a handful. Essentially NANNY AU where Thorin is a perturbed Detective Inspector navigating through life.
A Remover of Obstacles by MistakenMagic — 371.7k words**
Summary: Dis often chided her older brother for being a misanthropist. She did it so often it had become a term of endearment. It was true that Thorin struggled with people; he struggled to form and maintain relationships. Dr. Grey had diagnosed him with this and Thorin hadn’t the heart to tell him this wasn’t a symptom of his PTSD, it was a symptom of his personality. He exercised a sense of apathy with almost everyone he met… But Bilbo was different. Thorin actually found himself wanting to know more about him.
** This is honestly a favorite of mine. I can't begin to describe how amazing this fic is. If you have the time, go for it! I promise it will change you for good.
This is all I have for now, but please know that I'm currently reading new ones and I'll be adding them onto this list very soon!
Have a nice read! (And hopefully, with a nice cup of tea).

How do you or would you headcannon Bilbo and Thorin accidentally proposing or getting engaged and how would they proceed when they find out or the other accepts the proposal?
I'm so sorry for not noticing this ask sooner, but thank you! I rarely check this blog since I mostly stay on my main blog. And tbh it's been sooo long since I've been invested the fandom, so I'm not sure this answer will be the best thing I've come up with. I'm gonna need a refresher on Hobbit/LotR lore after this 😅
Well, to me, an accidental bagginshield proposal would occur one of two ways:
1) let's say that in dwarven culture (headcanon), giving your intended a great gift like a family heirloom or something personalized, would be a form of proposal.
Thorin giving Bilbo the mithril mail could have been his proposal, and while the other dwarves and Gandalf understand the meaning, Bilbo doesn't and no one tells him bc to everyone it just seems obvious. Everyone starts treating him with the same regard that they do with Thorin, their leader, and Bilbo notices the change in demeanor and asks either Bofur, Balin, or even Gandalf about it and they're like "Mr. Baggins, didn't you know? Thorin proposed to you, you are his consort! Congrats on being the only one to get through his rock solid heart!" And then he says something like, "I'm sorry, what?! What do you mean I'm his consort?!" "Don't you remember, when Thorin gave you the mithril vest? In our culture, giving a fine gift like that to your intended is a proposal! And you accepted his gift, so you sealed the deal." And Bilbo tries to tell them that he didn't know, that this is a mistake. But when he's asked whether he would like to return the gift and end the proposal, he can't do it, he doesn't want to, so he just goes on with the knowledge that he's the King's consort. Thorin would be so pleased that now he can be touchy feely with Bilbo, and it wouldn't really be much of a change from what they were like before, but now everyone knows and accepts. (And if you want the angst feelings, the scene at the end where he tells Balin what he feels about Thorin after he dies hits harder.)
2) if Bilbo proposes: like I said, I need a refresher on the lore so if there's a canon explanation for a Hobbit form of proposal or anything, just excuse me and let's pretend.
So, hobbits really love food and simple living and comforts, right? But that's not really possible when they're on a long journey, so Bilbo has to make do with what he has. Maybe they're short on their food supplies one day, and Bilbo has some food from back home that he packed and it's wrapped in a nice package, and he was saving it for himself, but offers it to Thorin and Co. And we all know Hobbits love to eat, and they eat a lot, so a few rolls of bread is like a snack to them, whereas for others it's a full meal, so the dwarves think he has a feast and is enough to feed them all for the night. Bilbo unintentionally proposed to Thorin by giving him a gift of a homemade 'meal' in a nice package, as is the custom (headcanon), and for a moment Bilbo forgets about it and just feels good for providing his friends with some food. Later that night, Gandalf reminds him, teasing him, about his proposal and Bilbo blushes and coughs nervously, saying he didn't mean to, but luckily, neither Thorin nor the other dwarves know about it so he thinks he's safe. But, Kili and Fili, sneaky little guys, were eavesdropping on their 'private' conversation and rush to let Thorin and everyone know about the meaning of Bilbo's gesture. Thorin scolds them for being nosy and that they probably heard wrong anyway, but the next day Thorin asks Gandalf and he confirms. Thorin says nothing but now that he knows, he allows himself to get physically and emotionally closer to Bilbo and from there, they kinda just live as a couple and no one questions it, they're happy for them!
It's been so long, but this is bringing back my bagginshield feels from back in the day 🥰
If anyone wants to write a fic or draw something inspired by this, you're welcome to do so, just let me know!

Hellooo, I love your work, and I would love to request something! If you don't end up writing it, that is completely fine. Please don't feel obligated to!
I'm not sure if you write for Kili, so if you do not, Thorin would be perfectly fine!
But imagine when the company is in Mirkwood and they are sitting in the cells. They are visited by (what they believe to be) a Dwarrowdam, while she is beardless, she is Dwarven in size and has long hair with a few braids in it (They consider her to be like Kili, relatively ugly for Dwarven standards). They get excited when she talks to them, but she doesn't seem to know anything of dwarves culture.
When the guards come, they ask her to hide, which she does not, and is thus greated by the Guards as their Princess, Legolas little Sister. They company realises they've met Thranduils Daughter, who might look a little dwarven but is an elf through and through, with long pointed ears, ethereal seemingly glowing long hair, and royal blood.
How it end is up to you! I hope you have a wonderful day! Take care <333
Hi there, Nonny!
Thank you so much for this and for your patience! 💜
I don't write for Kíli and probably couldn't do him justice if I tried, so I wrote for Thorin, since he is my first dwarf love. :)
Anyway, I hope you like it.

“Did he offer you a deal?”
Thorin bobbed his head, a hint of triumph surging through him as he replied, “He did. And I told him ish kakfê ai-‘d-dûr-rugnal! Him and all his kin!”
“Well, that’s that, then.”
“I will not bargain with elves,” Thorin told him flatly, moving to the far side of the cell. Of course, calling it the far side was a bit disingenuous, as the cell itself was too small to actually have sides. Small. Damp. With cots of woven tree branches that had poked through the packed earthen walls. There was barely enough room for him and Balin, and Balin was one of the smaller dwarves. Thank Mahal he wasn't locked away with Bombur.
Thorin peered through the iron bars that made up the cell door. Across from them, Bombur and Bifur were crammed into one cell together, and Bifur couldn't be seen behind his cousin. Thorin just knew he was there, for every now and again, Bifur muttered something in khuzdul.
“Without a bargain,” Balin was saying, “we are not getting out of here, you know.”
Thorin shook his head, moving away from the door to sink onto the edge of the roughly woven bunk. It was rough and uneven, and he couldn't imagine getting a peaceful night’s sleep on it, even if his mind wasn't already weighted down with their situation and the fact they were quickly running out of time to make it to the Lonely Mountain before the last light of Durin’s Day.
Still, he had his principles and bargaining with elves violated every one of them. Especially bargaining with Mirkwood elves. Out of the question entirely. “We will find our way out. Our burglar is still among the missing, remember.”
“True, but we don't know where he is, or if he is even within the palace,” Balin pointed out, sinking onto the bunk across from Thorin’s. The cell was so narrow, if he reached out, Thorin would be able to touch Balin. Thank Mahal small spaces didn't trouble him, since it looked as though they might be there for some time.
Best not to think about that.
“Are you thirsty?”
Thorin jumped at the unexpected voice that floated through the bars and when he looked over to see who their visitor might be, he couldn't help but stare. How was it possible a dwarrowdam walked freely in Mirkwood, of all places? And not only a dwarrowdam, but one of the oddest looking women he’d ever seen, with her shimmering, white-blonde hair sleek as it spilled over her shoulders. He would have thought her to be an elf, were it not for her diminutive size (she was shorter than even Balin, and that was saying something,) and the fact that her face was completely devoid of any hair whatsoever. Her pale skin almost glowed in its bareness, making her wide eyes seemed even wider and incredibly dark. But then his gaze alit on the braids woven into that otherwise sleek golden fall. Two on the left side of her head and one on the right, each adorned with small silver ornaments of some sort. An outcast, no doubt, and probably some sort of elf-servant, which sent a rush of pity for her surging through him.
“We want nothing from the likes of you,” he told her bluntly. “Leave us.”
She stepped closer and he realized then that her eyes were not dark at all. Instead, they were blue. A deep blue the color of the perfect sapphires that were once mined in Erebor. Deep blue and just as sparkling. Those beautiful eyes held his as she replied, “Stubborn fool. Think you anyone else will pass by and offer you water or anything, for that matter?”
“I deal with no dwarf who serves an elven master,” he told her flatly. “So take yourself off, and leave us be.”
“Thorin,” Balin’s voice was low with both warning and scolding, “there is no need to be rude to the girl.”
Thorin glared at him. “Mind yourself, Balin. We need nothing from the likes of her.”
She remained where she stood, unfazed by his dismissal. “Are you always one to cut off his nose to spite his face?”
“Begone with you, unless you’ve come to release us.”
“I couldn’t do that if I wanted to,” came her pert reply, “as Thranduíl would be furious with me and I’d rather avoid that, it’s all the same to you, dwarf.”
He held her stare as he debated about whether or not to scold her again. But when she held his stare without flinching or looking away, he relented with a muffled sigh. He was cutting off his nose to spite his face and in all honesty, he would gladly kill for a sip of anything liquid at the moment. “Very well. I beg your pardon. Water would be appreciated.”
“There,” she bobbed her head, “was that so difficult?”
Thorin felt Balin step up behind him, and he looked over at the older dwarf as Balin asked, “Who are you, lass? What clan do you claim as yours?”’
“Clan?” Her blue eyes clouded with confusion as she shook her head. “I’m afraid I don't know what you mean.”
“Whom do you call husband? I assume he’s the one what wove those into your hair.”
“Again, I’m not following you. I’m afraid I don't understand at all what you’re asking me.”
“The braids.” Balin gestured to his own woolly white hair. “The man you’ve pledged yourself to, was he killed in battle with these elves? Is that how you came to be indentured to them?”
“Indentured?” She shook her head, the silver ornaments in her braids thunking softly against one another. “I’ve pledged myself to no man. And I am indentured to no one. In fact, I have no idea what you’re going on about at all.”
Thorin wasn't exactly sure how to respond to her. “You don’t understand the significance of your braids?”
“Other than they keep my hair out of my eyes?” She smiled then. “There is no significance and I’ve pledged myself to no man. At least,” a glint came into her pale eyes as she met his, “not yet.”
To his surprise, his cheeks grew hot. She must have noticed it herself, for her smile grew winsome. “You, dwarf, are blushing.”
“Dwarf?” Balin broke in, shaking his head. “I beg your pardon, my lady, but he is no ordinary dwarf. He is—”
“That’ll do, Balin,” Thorin broke in, shaking his head as he glanced over his shoulder at him.
Balin’s eyes widened briefly, then he nodded. “Of course.” And to the girl, he said, “Have you a name?”
“I do, of course. Surely you don't think they simply call out You! and hope I turn around, do you?”
Now it was Balin’s turn to blush and Thorin almost laughed aloud at the rare sight. Clearing his throat, Balin bobbed his head. “Of course not. That would be silly.”
“It would, indeed.” She smiled once more. “I am—”
Footsteps sounded and Kíli hissed, “Someone’s coming!”
Fíli appeared at the door of the cell he shared with his brother. “You should leave, miss. I should hate to see you in trouble.”
“Trouble?” She twisted toward him and Thorin couldn’t help noticing how her hair seemed to come alive, spilling like molten gold over her shoulder. “I’ll have nothing of the sort. Why would I?”
“Princess?” One of the Mirkwood guards appeared, scowling as he addressed the girl. “You should not be down here. It’s not safe.”
“Oh, do I answer to you now?” Her voice remained mild but there was no mistaking the amusement and annoyance threaded through her words. “Because I’m fairly certain I do not.”
“Your father would be displeased, should he know you’ve come down here.”
Princess. Thorin straightened at hearing her addressed this way. This girl was no dwarrowdam after all. Which explained so much, and yet left so many other questions clanging around in his head, beginning with why a princess was wandering about the dungeon, for starters.
“Carys!” A deeper voice rang out along the cells. “What mean you by this?”
“By what? Being here?” She didn't seem at all nervous or afraid as the elf who’d rounded Thorin and his company up in the Mirkwood forest stepped out of the shadows. “Legolas, you didn't even offer them a drop to drink and after battling the spiders, no less. What is the matter with you?”
Thorin almost smiled at the disappointment and scolding in her voice. It served the uppity elf right, to be put in his place. He not only accused Thorin of lies, but of thievery as well, and took it upon himself to relieve Thorin of the same sword Elrond had gifted him not a two months ago.
Thorin looked from Carys to Legolas and almost groaned at the resemblance between them. She was not a dwarf at all, but merely a very small elf. A child, perhaps? He thunked his head against the iron bars. A child would not go against her father’s wishes and free them. The most she would do would be to offer them water. What else could she do?
But if Legolas was chagrined by her words, he hid it well, snorting before he replied, “Why would I do such a thing? And you should not take it upon yourself to—”
“Oh, hush,” she snapped, shaking her head at him. “Don’t be that way. Papa is angry that they dared trespass, and while he’s within his rights to be annoyed, I think imprisoning them is overkill. They were lost in our woods and he had them arrested for it. They’d done nothing to warrant it, you know. Lost is not a crime, unless our laws have changed, which I’m fairly certain they’ve not.”
Legolas’ dark eyes flicked up and Thorin almost smiled as he met the elf’s stare easily. Stepping around his sister, he said, “Do not think I am as soft as she. I care not if you lot are left here long enough to turn to dust.”
“I’ve noticed,” Thorin replied dryly, mindful of Balin’s dark eyes boring into his back at the moment. “Although, I confess, I was not aware being lost was a crime, unless, as she’s pointed out, your laws have changed.”
“You are guilty of more than simply being lost. You took it upon yourself to attempt to hunt one of Thranduíl’s prized deer, and that is a crime in these lands,” Legolas told him, shaking his head. “You are fortunately this cell is all the punishment he’s ordered.”
“I certainly feel fortunate.”
“Thorin, mind yourself,” Balin growled behind him.
Thorin ignored the warning, adding, “We were lost and hungry and thirsty. You would do the same, were you in our boots.”
“I would never be in dwarven boots. I value my feet far too much.” Legolas turned to his sister. “Come. I will have one of the others deal with this lot.”
“I wish to bring them water first. A little kindness won’t hurt, you know.”
“Not now. Let’s go.” He grabbed Carys by the elbow and steered her away, calling over his shoulders, “She will not be back, you know.”
Carys scowled as she glared up at her older brother. “Would it have hurt to give them a sip of water? When did you grow so cold, Legolas, that you would deny anyone a basic necessity such as that?”
“You are too soft, is the problem,” he replied without looking at her. “And you know Father would agree with me.”
She pulled free. “We will see about that.”
“Carys, wait—”
She ignored him, marching ahead of him along the open walkway that led toward her father’s throne room. Although she knew her pleas would fall on deaf ears, she had to try. Thorin Oakenshield and his company had broken no elven laws, save for that attempt to shoot one of Thranduíl’s white deer, and she felt one hundred years in a cell was not exactly a warranted punishment for that. If they’d hit the deer, perhaps, but since he’d missed…
Besides, she’d heard tell of Thorin Oakenshield and had, for some time now, wondered whether or not he actually existed. Now that she’d seen him for herself… well… she was somehow going to convince her father to let him go. What harm had befallen her family from having the dwarves in their forest? Absolutely none.
With that, she marched into the throne room where she found Thranduíl perched high atop his throne of woven branches, adorned with gilded versions of oak leaves, acorns, maple seeds, and pine cones. He blended with the surroundings in his flowing robes of gold, orange, brown, and red silk that floated about him like a mist. The sunlight that filtered through the treetops reflected off his crown of sticks and twigs, also adorned with gilded acorns and polished stones that in some lights appeared golden, and in others, almost black.
“Papa, a word?”
His eyes were as green as spring leaves after a rainstorm, calm and tranquil as they met hers. “What is it, Carys?”
“The prisoners.”
“If you mean the dwarves, you should simply stop right there,” he replied sternly, “for I will not discuss them.”
“What have they done that is so terrible? They were lost.”
“That does not excuse them their trespasses.”
“They didn't kill the deer, mind you.” She shook her head as she stepped closer. “They did nothing except walk along our paths. They sipped not even a drop of water. Let them go.”
“I will do no such thing and we will not discuss it further. They stay until Thorin Oakenshield is willing to return to me that which is rightfully mine.”
“What?” She cocked her head slightly to stare up at him. “What are you about, Papa? What of yours can these dwarves possibly have?”
Thranduíl shook his head, sending his shimmering blond hair spilling like molten gold over his shoulders. “Never you mind about it. You have my answer. And I’ll not change my mind, so do not even try.”
“But, Papa—”
“No!” His low voice echoed all around them and his robes swished softly as he rose to sweep carefully down the staircase from his throne. “I’ll not settle for any less.”
“You are being impossibly stubborn, do you know this? You make no sense and this is just cruel. They’ve not even been offered so much as sip of water since you locked them away.”
“I needed not make sense to you, daughter, to have my wishes obeyed. Now, you are to stay away from the dungeons. Legolas,” Thranduíl’s pale eyes flicked up over her head, “see your sister to her chambers, please.”
“I can see myself there, thank you.” She spun about and swept out of the throne room through the doorway along the eastern wall, that led to a corridor traveled only by her family. Her rooms were at the far end, and she didn't slow down as she made her way through her chambers and out to the small garden behind them.
Hints of jasmine and honeysuckle hung in the air. If she closed her eyes, Carys could almost see her mother, for those scents would forever be associated with her mother. She had very little memory of her, but for her scent remained burned into Carys’ brain and would remain there. This garden was the only place were honeysuckle grew, as Thranduíl did not know she’d cultivated it. Had he, and Carys had no doubt he’d have ordered it burned. Not out of cruelty, but out of self-preservation, for he’d never gotten over her murder.
Carys was but an infant when it happened and had no memory of her mother aside from the flowers. And she could not even be sure that she linked them because she remember them or because her father told her that her mother’s favorite scent was honeysuckle. It didn't matter. Carys found comfort in the smell, just has her father found sorrow in it.
A low stone wall ringed the garden and as she sank onto it, Carys sighed softly. Thorin and his men did not deserve to be locked away in a dungeon for a crime that was hardly a crime. The longer she sat there, her back against her favorite tree, watching the fireflies as they flashed through the growing darkness, the more strongly she felt they did not deserve this.
The Feast of Starlight, Mereth Nuin Goliath was to begin shortly, and once the wine began flowing, no one would notice if she slipped away from the others. So she joined them all in the Great Hall, and by half-eleven, even her father was well into his cups. As she thought, no one seemed to take notice when she slipped out of the hall and down into the kitchens, where the keys were kept on a hook near the doorway.
The iron ring was cold and far heavier than it looked, and she wrapped her fingers about the numerous equally cold and heavy keys to keep them from clanking together as she descended into the damp depths of the Mirkwood dungeons. That dampness bit into her, the cold made her feet ache through her thin silk slippers, and she wished she’d brought a wrap with her.
But, she’d be up in her chambers and warm again soon enough, and so put her discomfort from her mind. It was temporary and it would pass.
“What time do you suppose it is?” The low male voice floated out from one of the cells.
“It must be nearly dawn by now.”
“We will never make it in time.”
She crept up to Thorin’s cell and softly rattled the keys. “I beg to differ.”
Thorin appeared in the doorway, his eyes pale blue slivers in the soft light afforded by the torches affixed high above them. Those eyes stood out starkly against his long tangle of black har and equally dark, heavy brows. “What are you doing?”
“I do not believe trespassing is deserving of a hundred-year sentence.” She slid the key into the lock and turned to set the tumblers opening. “And so, I’ve come to let you all go. But, you’ll have to move quickly, for it won’t take much for them to notice I’ve gone. They’re drunk, but not dead, you know.”
The door opened noiselessly and a moment later, Thorin stood before her. Up close, he was strikingly handsome. Far more so than she would have ever thought and definitely more so than she’d ever expected. And since he was tall for a dwarf, and she was short for an elf, they were the same height, which meant they stood nearly eye-to-eye.
Those eyes were friendly now, and almost warm as he said, “Princess, thank you.”
“There is no need for that.” She glanced over her shoulder at the sounds of people moving in the kitchens. “We need to move. Now. Follow me.”
“How do we know this isn’t a trap?” A dwarf almost as tall as Thorin and far more menacing-looking, with his balding, tattooed head, growled.
“Why would I trap you when you were already trapped?” She shook her head. “There really is no time for this. Come with me or remain here for the next hundred years. The choice is yours.”
“Where is the hobbit? Is he here?” a dwarf with two jet-black pigtails asked.
“I’ve no idea what hobbit you might be referring to, as I’ve seen none. Now, please,” Carys tried to force as much urgency into her whisper as she could manage, “it will not be long before someone comes into the kitchens and notices this enormous key ring—” she held up the ring in question, jangling it softly for effect—“is missing. And they will know why it is missing. So, if you’d be so kind, please, follow me.”
“Do as she says,” Thorin hissed, then to her surprise, caught her by the elbow as he added, “Please, lead on.”
She did, moving swiftly along the all-too-familiar treads, deeper into the palace, until they reached the bottommost level, where at least two dozen casks stood carefully stacked, waiting to be filled with goods to be sent down the Forest River to Esgaroth and points beyond.
Thorin stared at her in disbelief. “You cannot mean what I think you mean.”
“You will be fine. Trust me. I used to do this myself as a child. It might give you butterflies in your stomach, but that’s the worst that should happen.”
“Thorin, you cannot mean to listen to her!” The dwarf with the pigtails stared in wide-eyed horror. “She’s meaning to drown the lot of us. And we cannot leave without finding Bilbo.”
“Please,” she looked from one dwarf to the next, shaking her head as dust filtered down from the boards above, “someone has noticed and you are almost out of time. Get in the barrels. Otherwise, my efforts will have been in vain and you will find yourselves back in your cells.”
“In with you all,” Thorin whispered sharply. “Waste no more time!”
More dust filtered down around them and the dwarves reluctantly climbed into the barrels, muttering and mumbling the entire time. She ignored them as she met Thorin’s gaze. “You should get in as well. I’ll pull the lever and get you on your way. Hopefully, the current will be swift enough to have whisked you out of reach of the archers, but I will try to stall them as best I can just the same.”
“Thank you, princess.”
“You’re welcome.” Footsteps thudded dully overhead. “You should go.”
He glanced up. “What will happen to you?”
“I don’t know. I’ve never defied my father this way. He will be quite angry, I imagine. But, that certainly won’t be the first time.”
The footsteps grew louder and now her heart beat faster. Thranduíl would be beyond furious with her, really. He might even banish her. She didn't know. She’d seen him banish other elves for lesser offenses, but they were not his daughter, either. Certainly she would not have to fear such a punishment.
At least, she hoped she wouldn’t.
The boards directly over their heads creaked and voices, muffled at first, grew clearer. The seriousness of her actions bit into her then and without hesitation, she said, “Get in now!”
Thorin climbed into a barrel and looked back at her once more. “Thank you again.”
“Think not of it,” she told him, forcing herself to smile as she moved to the lever that wold turn the floor into a ramp. “Safe travels.”
Though kept well-oiled, the dampness still caused rust to form on the giant cogs and they squealed as she pushed against the lever with all of her might. At first, the floor only barely moved and fear bit into her with sharp teeth, urged her to push with more force. The muscles in her back screamed, the ones in her legs burned, but finally, the ramp lowered and one by one, the barrels splashed into the river far below. Another moment later, and they were out of sight.
The ramp clapped shut just as the first guards burst into the chamber, Thranduíl right behind them, his eyes ablaze with utter fury unlike any she’d ever seen. When those eyes fell on her, she stepped back, her stomach twisting into hot knots of fear unlike any she’d ever felt before.

The hobbit fic recs
This list will include all ratings and tags, so read at your own discretion! :)
as sunshine falls on the wretched by KivrinEngle - Rated G
Bilbo Baggins, the newly appointed Master of Bag End, has just reached his majority. He lives alone in his fine house, managing his estate, and ignoring the people of Hobbiton as much as they avoid him. When a storm lands him with an unexpected (and unwelcome) little visitor, all Bilbo wants to do is find the baby Dwarf's missing family so he can get back to his own life. That's not what happens.
dig your roots ('fore the sun goes down) by GuardianofDawn - Rated T
It isn't that Shirefolk - one Bilbo Baggins included - go out of their way to keep their gifts a secret. They just don't consider any of it abnormal or gossip-with-strangers worthy. Hobbits can pass unseen and unheard when they wish, because hobbits are children of the earth and growing things. Hobbits will say it is because they don't clod about in steel toed boots. Hobbits can choose to grow their children in groves, like prayers granted by Yavanna. Hobbits, if questioned, would mildly ask why else you would call growing trees a 'nursery'. And sometimes, as all hobbits know, a grove born hobbit may have been twice-grown. Shirefolk will comment that such a hobbit was born knowing a shortcut to mushrooms, and count their blessings when Gandalf Greyhame does not make himself involved in the matter. (They weren't so lucky as that last with Bilbo.)
First Impressions by BeautifulFiction - Rated G
‘Do we not feed you enough, Master Baggins?’ Bilbo rolled his eyes, glad that his back was to Thorin. By the Valar, the dwarf knew how to make even a simple question into a challenge. He found flaw in everything, and Bilbo was sorely tempted to throw the apple he had picked at Thorin’s head. Only the grumble of his belly and the tattered remnants of his good manners stayed his hand. They did not, however, control his tongue.
The 'H' Word by Trixylune - Rated G
For a Hobbit Kink Meme Prompt: Lets say that the term 'halfling' is an extreme insult to Hobbits. and during the Journey, Bilbo doesn't realise that the Dwarves don't know what the term actually means and doesn't understand why they are being so vulgar towards him. Lets also say that Gandalf was riding too far ahead or something and doesn't realise what's going on until dinner one night when he hears one of the dwarves (Bofur/Ori? Plz?) jokingly call Bilbo 'Halfling' and is furious. Gandalf:"BOFUR! Do NOT use that word in my presence again!" Dwarves:??
How To Win A Hobbit's Affection by Tehri - Rated G
There are a few key differences in how hobbits and dwarves court. These differences can lead to a good deal of confusion, and while Thorin is certainly not the image of a subtle dwarf, Bilbo is still utterly confused about what is going on.
Let your colours bleed (And blend with mine) by Xenomorphic - Rated T
Hobbits glow whenever they are happy. Of course Gandalf forgot to tell the dwarves.
The Age of Miscommunication by SilverSkiesAtMidnight - Rated T
“It’s got such a presence to it, even from a distance,” Bilbo says softly, and there’s a general murmur of awed agreement from the others. “Why, in all my fifty years, I never thought I’d see such a thing, and we haven’t even arrived yet!” Thorin’s sword hits the ground with a clatter, and Balin chokes on his pipe. The hobbit doesn’t look at Thorin, too busy thumping Balin on the back. Once the dwarf seems able to breathe again, he looks up, to find thirteen wide pairs of eyes fixed on him. “What?” he says defensively, though he’s not sure what he’s defending. “You’re how old?” Kíli squeaks. Bilbo frowns at the young dwarf. “I’m fifty years old. Well, fifty-one, come springtime. Though it is not very polite to ask someone their age so bluntly,” he tells him primly. Fíli makes a choked sound, and Nori lets out a vicious string of swears in Khuzdul.
Beauty Weeps the Brave by LaoraRyn - Rated G
None of the dwarves understand why bouquets of flowers adorn these tombs in the catacombs of Erebor. But then, none of them ever really understood Bilbo Baggins, either.
You Got Me by drunkonwriting - Rated G
The Company shows their affection for Bilbo in accordance with dwarvish tradition. Bilbo... has no idea why everyone keeps giving him gifts. (Dwarves give gifts of craft to start friendships or romance. Everybody lives AU, canon-compliant through the first movie.)
A Pretty Face by panickyintheuk - Rated G
Bilbo does his best to prove that he isn't completely shallow. The Company doesn't seem convinced, for some reason.
One Hobbit Against Five Armies of Stupidity by driedupwishes - Rated G
Bilbo Baggins was tired, dirty, and had had it up to here with everyone's ridiculous stubbornness. He swore when he got his hands on Gandalf the Grey, he was going to bloody strangle him. That would be after he knocked some sense into that damn gold crazed dwarf first, however. That was, of course, if he lived through the experience of letting Thorin Oakshield know he had the Arkenstone.
The Road Goes Ever On And On by myredturtle - Rated G
Being dead doesn't stop Bilbo Baggins from wanting to solve riddles and set out on adventures
The Ladder by Milliethekitty27 - Rated G
Inspired from a post made by wheeloffortune-design on tumblr. Tired of his lonely kitchen in Yavanna's Garden, Bilbo Baggins wonders if the dwarven love of being underground is true in death. If so, maybe his dwarves are living (ha ha) under the very land Bilbo is weeding. With that thought, Bilbo goes and asks Hamfast for a shovel.
Arkenrocks by Cimila - Rated G
The thing Gandalf neglected to mention when he assured Thorin Oakenshield and Company that Bilbo Baggins of Bag End would be the perfect thief for their mission was this: A Hobbit wouldn't be able to tell a diamond from a pearl, or from an Arkenstone - no matter how hard they try. This leads to some confusion, on Bilbos part. And some frustration, again on Bilbos part. (What sort of a description was 'heart of the mountain', anyway? A useless one, that's what.)
dine with the blood on my hands by aHostileRainbow - Rated G
What if the dwarves did break one of Belladonna Took's prized dishes? [Another AU snapshot of Bilbo Baggins losing his temper and being a BAMF about it.]
The Most Ancient and Sacred Hobbit Remedy by Ingi - Rated G
Conkers is a game of skill and fun, a perfect way to let off steam to prevent many in-families assassinations from ocurring, and most of all, training. Because in Hobbit culture, many things are sacred, but very few as sacred as generosity and constraint. And sometimes, of course, a hobbit becomes overly greedy. It happens even in the best of families —Bilbo's, even, has a perfect example, coughLobeliacough—, and so, the hobbits long devised a solution: the Most Ancient and Sacred Hobbit Remedy for Greediness. It works nine times out of ten, and the one that doesn't is usually due to death or severe injury meddling in the process.
To Love Is To Live by erikaehm - Rated G
Twist on the 'Bilbo takes in a dwarf' stories.
Bilbo does take in a dwarf … but not Thorin, Fili, Kili, or Ori.
He takes in Bifur.
On Omelettes by icarus_chained - Rated G
Bilbo interrupts an argument between Bombur and Dwalin to explain the hobbit approach to ancestral weaponry, and the insanity of more or less the entire Took line. Or: why frying pans are a hobbit's weapon of choice.
Listen by Neyiea - Rated G
Bilbo's always had a good ear for languages, so with a little bit of effort on his part, and a small amount of help from an unlikely source, he begins to learn Khuzdul.

The aim is a regular posting schedule (once every week or fortnight or so), but right now I have just a mega amount of one shots (like seriously you guys aren't prepared for what's coming. So enjoy! ~H
Put Me Down! By Resacon1990
|| general - 1.8k - completed ||
Bilbo groans as Thorin continues to yell insults up at Beorn.
"You giant oaf!" he calls, "put him down! He clearly doesn't want to be hanging from your meaty claw!"
Notes: I feel like most everyone knows this fic, but if you don't then you definitely need to read it. It's so fluffy and funny and wonderful. Thilbo centric.
Clementine by TenTomatoes
|| general - 6.4k - completed ||
In which Bilbo Baggins left a hobbit lass behind him when he joined them on this quest and Thorin doesn't care until he does.
Notes: This is also Thilbo centric and is a great example of just how much of an idiot Thorin can be. I love it so much.
Back, and There Again… by HiddenKitty
|| teen - 8.3k - completed ||
Belladonna has been waiting for her only son Bilbo to join her in Yavanna's pastures for many years, but it doesn't quite turn out the way she'd hoped. It seems love and adventures can change a hobbit in quite different ways.
Endless, endless thanks to H. Savinien for their wonderful beta-ing!
Notes: I haven't read this one too many times cause it's a little angsty, but I do like it a lot, all things considered. Thilbo centric.
Adventures in Prince Sitting by Lumelo
|| general - 4.1k - completed ||
Looking after your nephew for half a day isn't that big of a deal, really. Except when said nephew happens to be a prince of Durin's line, second in line to the throne, and really quite the destructive little beast for something that's only known how to walk for a few months. His Highness is lucky he's cute, really.
Nori really isn't sure why Ori thinks he can handle a baby. Fortunately, he can always make Dwalin help him, or else.
Notes: Nwalin focused, with a side of Fiori and Thilbo. I can't ever decide if I like Dwalin/Nori or Dwalin/Ori more. Maybe we should have a vote... But either way, I love this fic, especially since it highlights two characters that don't typically get the limelight (also baby dwarrow).
Trouble with Faces by Resacon1990
|| teen - 3.6k - completed ||
A quick trip to the elven traveller of the month was enough for the entire Shire to realise that Belladonna and Bungo Baggins had a face blind son.
Notes: This one isn't as well known as some of the others on the list, but it's so soft and I adore every bit of it.

Fíli makes a choked sound, and Nori lets out a vicious string of swears in Khuzdul.
Notes: CLASSIC ALERT. All I can really say about this fic is that if you haven't read it, that's a crime, and you must. This fic is a gen-you-ine staple, and I adore it. Thilbo.
All That Shine as Moonstone Leave a Discernible Mark by kay_cricketed
|| teen - 2.9k - completed ||
After the Battle of Five Armies, Thorin Oakenshield is determined to secure Bilbo's place in the world, even if he must make him a husband and a widower in the same hour to do so.
Notes: This one's simultaneously funny and saddd. All the feels, especially the faith Thorin has in Bilbo (this is Thilbo btw). Everything ends up fine, but it still destroys me.
To Choose a Consort by Thevaen
|| general - 5.1k - completed ||
''You really ought to look more interested, or at least pretend.'' Bilbo started, giving the Dwarf a slap against his arm at the look he received. ''And stop being such a child.'' Thorin smiled. ''They don't know me the way you do.'' A flutter exploded in the Hobbit's chest at the words. ''I doubt if there's anyone who is quite so skilled at interpreting expressions as you Master Baggins.''
Thorin had to choose a consort. He knew that, and he also knew he didn't want a consort that was not the Hobbit. He doesn't, and instead stubbornly waits for a sign that the Hobbit himself would be willing to be such. Bilbo in turn, knew he was more than a little envious of those that got the chance to present themselves in front of the Dwarven King, and that he was more than a little relieved when time after time, they were kindly rejected. He also knew that if he was being really honest, he really wanted to take on the spot himself.
Notes: This one's another classic and I love it too much to handle sometimes. The pining is lovely and it ends up so happily, and I just love it so much.
The Fine Print by airebellah
|| general - 6.3k - completed ||
It had been many years since Bilbo had seen his Dwarves. Driven by his loneliness and nostalgia, one night he decided to re-read the contract he had signed so many years ago, hoping to find catharsis. Instead, what he found was burning rage at all the ridiculous clauses the Dwarves had slipped in without his notice. In the end, Bilbo knew there was only one thing to do. He would travel to Erebor, and have very specific words with the King.
Notes: LMAO, this fic tho... It's just hilarious, and so very Bilbo. I love it so much, you guys have no idea.

Hobbits rub noses to greet each other - a fact the dwarves don't know until they arrive in Rivendell and Elrond greets a surprised Bilbo by rubbing their noses together. Some of the company find it quite amusing, but Thorin is less than pleased. Fluff! Fill for the Hobbit Kink Meme.
Notes: This one is so soft and fluffy, and Elrond (we love Elrond here) being knowledgable about Hobbit culture is such a vibe and we love that. Thilbo.
And another list done, the satisfaction is real you've got no idea. But anywhoooo, I hope you enjoyed! Any requests, just shoot me an ask or something. I'm also thinking about doing single fic in depth honest reviews. If that's something you'd be interested in seeing, just let me know! The Library is officially off of hiatus. Love you all!

I Made a Promise to the Moon
A/n: Part 5 of where do we go from here, Thorin Cashes in the favor you owe him, you both became in the habit of saving each other's lives and doing favors for each other, and Erestor doesn't want you to leave because the quest is dangerous
Pairing: Erestor x reader
Ft: Protective Erestor, Tiny bit of angst, Dwarves, Annoyed Lindir, Minor Lindir x Glorfindel
| Part 1 | | Part 2 | | Part 3 | | Part 4 |
Taglist: @eunoiaastralwings (hope you get better from covid soon, it's a real pain)
Tumblr media
You soon caught word that a company of Dwarves, a halfling and a Wizard had entered Imladris, it was not a big house, secrets and news spread like wildfire to the people who worked in it, you had a good mind to believe Erestor had yet to hear it he locked himself in the library as soon as the Twins had finished fixing it.
That was 3 months ago, your bed was lonely without him and you had yet to tempt him back to your room, so what was the harm to go and see these dwarves if it was Thorin, there was no harm in joining him was there.
You met with the dwarves when Elrond had arrange dinner for them, you handed Elrond the paperwork about the deal he was conserving with the steward of Gondor, the Wizard and Thorin invited you to join them.
"It has been a long time since we last talked Lady Y/n, how have you been" Gandalf said picking some food off of his plate
"I have been well Mithrandir and you" You replied to him
"As good as I can be, I looked for you in the greenwood, I didn't find you there Thranduil said you moved here, is it permanent" Mithrandir said
"Yes it is, My husband is Lord Elrond's chief advisor, Lord Elrond has been very gracious" you said
"It helps that you do not mind to do work for me" Elrond said you nodded
"You got married and you dare not invite me to the ceremony, I may hate your brother but that is blasphemy" Thorin said
"there was no ceremony, it was spontaneous and during the feast of the starlight, speaking of that feast it is coming up, Thranduil has yet to send out invites" Elrond said
"The Greenwood isn't so green anymore, it's become infested with spiders, he didn't want any outsides complaining so he's not sending any invites out, or that is what he said in his letter" You told the Lord after the talk about swords was over, Thorin turned the conversation to you.
"Y/n, you have not swapped your sword for a book have you, I would like to cash in that favor you own me, would you join our company, you would get 1/16th of the share of the wealth in Erebor, if you do help us to reclaim it" Thorin questioned, Elrond looked at you.
"I do not see why not, my husband has locked himself away, and refuses even to see me, there is no harm in it, and I don't suppose I am that invaluable to lose, for a few months" You said
"If you wish to join them, I will not stop you" Elrond said
"So be it, Lady Y/n will join the company" Mithrandir said, the feasts finished with the dwarves singing and having a food fight, you almost hit Kili with a tomato for almost hitting Lindir with that potato or was it a cake, who knows.
You excused yourself, the hobbit followed after you, much to your fascination, you made ideal conversation as you walked to the Library, you answered the questions the hobbit eagerly asked you, In return he answered yours, you soon reached the heavy oaken doors of the library you pushed them open, and the hobbit bid you farewell and walked off to explore the rest of Imladris.
"Meleth-nin Were are you" The Library was a huge maze, Erestor was reorganising it because the twins did it wrong, you heard a groan come from five rows away, you reached him.
"Meleth are you groaning at me" You questioned crossing your arms, Erestor froze.
"No, The twins did an awful job, I can't find any books and the ones I can, I needed weeks ago, so, i'm now on the task of reorganizing it and it's tedious, What can I do for you Ithildin-nin" he questioned you
"you know how I told you Thorin and I owe each other favors, well he cashed his in, and as normal it will probably involve out habit of saving each others lives" You said
"Cut to the chase, I don't have the time, for you to cut around it completely" Erestor said
"He asked me to join his quest to reclaim Erebor" You said
"And what did you tell him" Erestor said
"I told him I would help him" You said
"SMAUG MAY OF NOT BEEN SEEN FOR 60 YEARS BUT HE'S PROBABLY STILL ALIVE, AND THAT GOLD HAS A CURSE ON IT, NOT TO MENTION THE DANGER EVEN TRYING TO GET TO IT, I KNOW THORIN HAS AN ORC PACK CHASING HIM, TELL THORIN YOU ARE NOT GOING" Erestor yelled at you
"That is not your call, I told you so you wouldn't wonder why you wouldn't see me in months and I don't care, I know how to handle myself, I'm not a helpless Elleth who needs a big strong ellon to protect her Erestor" You shot back at him
"There is a chance no one in that company will return and if you join it, it would mean you as well, I do not want to end up like your brother" Erestor hissed in anger anyone passing by would be concerned for the shouting contest going on inside of the library.
Thorin half thought when he heard it, you were not going to join him, he never expected what you yelled at Erestor next.
"I love you Erestor, but if you can't learn i can take care of myself, then I shouldn't of married you" Erestor completely shut up, you stormed out of the library angrily missing Erestor's regretful sad look, elves didn't divorce commonly it was rare, did you divorce him, was that how you divorced someone, he didn't know.
Erestor dropped the book in his hands, not caring it was fragile and the only one, you were his one and now you hated him, he caught your arm and pulled you around and into his chest, into a hug.
"Don't leave me" His voice was barely above a whisper.
"Then let me do this Erestor, and come back to our room, the library can wait a day or two can't it" You said
"I-Im scared that I will lose you if I let you go" Erestor said
"I promise the moon that I will return to you always Erestor" you said, resting your forehead against his.
"But you will have to learn, I do not sit around still for long, that's why I came to Imladris in the first place for Thranduil, I was not the first pick" you said to him, Erestor huffed but smiled.
"If you are harmed in anyway when you return, I will take that puny dwarves head off of his arrogant shoulders" Erestor said
"As romantic as that sounds Thorin is my friend and we have a thing going were we save each others lives and it's my turn, so I would have to stop you" You said your thumb absentmindedly rubbing his cheek.
You both turned to the wolf whistle directed at you, to see Lindir pulling Glorfindel down a different corridor.
After talking with Erestors, you found yourself in the company of Lindir and Elrond, talking about the shortages that's the dwarves had caused, you were there because Thorin was your friend and the dwarves seemed to listen to you and the Hobbit seemed to enjoy your company.
All three of you paused seeing the dwarves bathing in the sacred fountain, you huffed and walked passed the two rolling up your sleeves and whistling at them loudly, as well as clapping your hands tougether.
"Get your hairy naked asses out of this fountain now" You said, the dwarves hurried out Thorin stayed sat in the middle with his arms crossed
"Do you really want to do this again, because you fully well know I will get in there and drag you out by your dick if i have to" You said the dwarf stayed glaring at you
"Alright you stubborn bastard, Forgive me Lord Elrond for what I am about to do" You said you stepped into the fountain and waded over to the dwarf who splashed your face with water, you grabbed his ear and dragged the struggling Dwarf out.
"Aw, i'm sorry did i hurt your ear" You said tossing him to the ground
"Yes, Yes you did" Thorin said angrily back at you, you flicked his forehead in response and he went from nursing his ear to his forehead.
"You'll live, just because I am the only elf you seem to respect gives you no right to violate the sacred fountain" You said crossing your arms
"You did as well" Thorin protested
"Well atleast i'm not a hairy naked dwarf" You shot back
"Get dressed and get out of here" You said throwing the dwarf his cloths in his face and walking back to Elrond and Lindir.
"It seems as If I need to change, if you will excuse me" You said walking passed them.
The Dwarves decided they had stayed in the elven kingdom to long, they bet Elrond would try and make them stay longer but to get to the door by Durin's day you had to leave.
You did not like leaving in secret or up secret ways, lady Galadriel already realised by now you were leaving, You had wanted to say goodbye to Erestor but there was no time, you lead the dwarves up an old rubble path which not many used, it lead to the mountains, which you had to cross to get to the lonely mountain, Thorin had dismissed the idea of traveling over Caradhras or threw the gap of Rohan.
It was well in your belief that Gandalf planned to take them threw the greenwood, as Thranduil was your brother, the elves didn't pose much of a threat anymore and with that you could lead the company threw the wood.
Gandalf told you to wait for him at the mountain pass, that went far from well, you should of stayed with your husband or even made the trek to the greenwood alone, oh how you hated Goblins, especially with there long warty hands and noses, they were like failed orcs.
You did wait in the mountain pass, but you got pulled into the mountains by goblins, one unsheathed your sword all the goblins jumped away from the blade as it glowed a cold blue.
"IT'S DAGNIR, THE BAIN OF DARKNESS, AND ORCRIST THE GOBLIN CLEAVER" The Goblin king yelled slipping on the goblins he used to step up to his throne, the dwarves looked at you, Dagnir was a well known blade, it was crafted by durin himself out of mithril, black iron and some dragon scales why did you of all people have it, you actually didn't know, you had found it, in a troll hoard years before you married Erestor, it was a good sword so you kept it.
Soon Gandalf saved your asses and You were on track to erebor again but not after a deal with orcs, wargs and beorn, did you even get to mirkwood, the wood would certainly be interesting, it had grown sick since you last visited.
A/n: sorry for the cliff hanger chapter, I had to stop it with a cliff hanger since i have grown busy of the past couple of days and I won't have time to update a lot this week since i have things to do, so hopefully my queue will get me threw the week, i am so excited on saturday i am going to see multiverse of madness, with two of my friends i cannot wait for.
Also think this is a bit short, the next chapter will be longer.
@eunoiaastralwings I hope you like the book your request is turning into.
Next Chapter: Mirkwood and arrival at Like town, maybe i fit in sneaking into Erebor as well who knows.
Elvish Translation:
Meleth-nin: My love
Meleth: love

genuine question why do u hate thorin? ive never seen anyone dislike him so im curious :)
Right! So, I'm only familiar with movie Thorin so all of my opinions are based off of that version. I may go on a little rant so this is everyone's chance to opt out before I start
Right off the bat the first time we see him in the hobbit I already didn't like his personality, as we progressed I grew even more frustrated with him because to me: he seemed like he thought everyone owed him something just because he lost his home. Now yes, I do understand it is no little matter - but I quickly lost all sympathy for him when I discovered a l o t of the characters in the lotr verse yknow. . . LOSE THEIR HOMES TOO AND DON'T ACT EVEN HALF OF WHAT HE ACTS.
Sorry, that's one of my main issues with him. I realise that I have a bias with Thranduil and that probably only influences my dislike for him but tbh? I don't really care. To me Thorin is very self-absorbed to the point where it's. . . really irritating.
He goes off at Bilbo during that scene where Bilbo nearly fell off the mountain when the hOBBIT LITERALLY SAVED HIS LIFE A FEW SCENES AGO WITH THE TROLLS?? HELLO? And do not even get me started at how he goes snapping at everyone for literally no reason: Gandalf, Elrond, his own kin, it's honestly exhausting watching him. You can't even blame majority of this behaviour on dragon sickness because that only comes AFTER.
Then there's the unnecessary recklessness. I understood his plight to a certain degree of not wanting to strike the deal with Thranduil ( I only understand bc I realised Thorin probably doesn't know what the gems mean to the elvenking ) but at the same time I really don't? Idk, whatever, that's more of a nitpick.
Then the fact that he literally sends his nEPHEWS INTO WHAT WAS CLEARLY A TRAP JUST BECAUSE HE WANTED TO KILL FUCKING AZOG. OKAY. NO. I'M NOT CALM AT ALL. I GET HE HAD A VENDETTA AND WHATEVER BY WHY THE HELL DID HE HAVE TO INVOLVE THOSE TWO IN THAT RECKLESS MOVE??
Cough, anyway.
In general his character frustrates me, I understand he's been through a lot - I really do, but at the same time. . . doesn't give him a right to go around shitting on everyone INCLUDING the ones who are helping you
Yeah, I really feel nothing for this character. Which is a first because sometimes even the characters who frustrate me to no end I at the very least have SOME connection to ( Slayer White and Reisi Munakata, for instance ) but nope. Not with Thorin. I have a blood feud with him that puts Thranduil's to shame.
Anyway - I hope that answers your question dear <3

Woodland Princess Ch.5: Confrontation
Tumblr media
Ch.4 Ch.6
It has been nearly the whole day now, we stop in a high up area where if we get attacked we have the upper hand. It's nearly pitch black apart from the light radiating off of a nearby fire that was created for warmth.
I couldn't sleep so I helped to take care of the horses and found a nice area where I could untie my mare known as Raerthar. After being set free everyone looks at me strange,
"What?" I ask in complete confusion.
"Isn't she going to run off." Asks a dwarf named Nori, he was a nice and unassuming person, so I don't really mind his company.
"No, we understand each other and she understands her freedoms and boundaries." I state and with that they all nod and go back to what they were doing.
Thorin scoffs at my explanation, glancing at me in a cruel way as if saying, 'I hope she runs away because I can promise that I won't give you one of our ponies'.
After noticing this I go to an area where a rock weathered to a flat in the middle but the sides curve upwards. I quickly grab a bunch of pine needles from the trees around me and create a soft patch within the rock where I lay on my back and stare up at the stars.
Suddenly a loud screeching noise reaches my ears and I sit upright within a second staring in the section where I heard the shriek. Bilbo appears confused and asked,
"What was that?"
"Orcs" I answer quickly, eager to change the subject but I hear Fili and Kili laughing about something I didn't hear. I stare at them and they quickly stop laughing but Thorin comes in and says,
"You think a night raid by orcs is funny do you!" He says in a raised voice I quickly try to help them out saying,
"I'm sure they meant nothing by it Thorin."
He turns and stalks over towards where I'm now standing in slight fear, but more adrenaline. The brothers see a hint of fear flash in my eyes as Thorin nears and they see that my daggers are missing. They quickly get up a dash over to where I'm at. Thorin is now right in front of me, and Gandalf gets up but doesn't move in fear that will provoke an attack. Thorin speaks in a dark tone,
"Do not tell me what to do with my own family, you piece of filth." He growls lowly.
By now Fili and Kili are a few feet behind him ready to intervene if anything becomes dangerous. I step back slightly and Thorin steps forward pushing me against the side of the wide cliff edge we were staying on.
"Well you obviously don't know how to deal with a way to break the silence and they were just trying to help, if you can't see that then you obviously need help in managing your 'family'." I reply in a mocking and sarcastic voice that I know will enrage him further. He puts a hand on his sword and goes to unsheath it, but Fili and Kili grab him while Gandalf pulls me away.
"What have I told you, you could be killed by Thorin and he wouldn't care." Starts Gandalf but I quickly use my elvish magic and disappear, not wanting to have this conversation right now. I slump back on the rock I layed pine needles over and fell into a deep sleep.

Joining the quest to reclaim Erebor
A/N: Hello! This is my first ever Hobbit HC but I got inspired by reading tons of great Hobbit / LOTR fics! I got especially inspired by @jangofctts ' brilliant writing!
How would you join Thorin's company? What would lead you into their acquaintance?
Romantic pairing: Fem! reader X Fili
Warning: this is supposed to be a little funny so don't take it too seriously XD I'll most likely write a part two to this! Let me know if you wish to be tagged!
Tumblr media
You're a human they stumbled upon in Bree
You had minded your own business at the Tavern when a blond dwarven man stumbled upon you and spilt his ale all over you
He profusely apologises
You tell him it's not a worry, that dress was old anyways.
It wasn't.
You just thought he was insanely handsome and you couldn't think of anything better to say
He begs you to let him make it up to you
You can tell he's a little bit tipsy
"Well, if you insist. You can buy me a drink."
He buys you a drink and the two of you stand by the bar and chat for a long while
"So what brings a dwarf like yourself to Bree?"
He tells you every detail of the quest. You know, cause he's drunk.
"oh wow."
Fili brings you back to the table with the rest of the Dwarves. Kili is amused at his brother for already having found such a gorgeous lady – Thorin is not so impressed
A familiar voice suddenly speaks up
"Gandalf!" you smile
The rest of the company is surprised to hear that you had once helped Gandfalf out with another quest. You had a clever mind and had managed to lure some goblins away for long enough so that they had a clear passage through their caves.
"I owe this lady a great deal-" Gandalf spoke humbly
"Gandalf, you owe me nothing." You had tried to kindly remind him.
You joined the dwarves, the hobbit and the wizard around their table and drank with them.
You were sandwiched between Fili and Bilbo. Kili sat next to Fili.
Kili constantly leaned over Fili's side so that he could ask you questions.
Mostly questions to figure out how available you were
"So, doesn't your husband mind all of your adventures?"
Fili glaring at him.
Way to be subtle.
"Oh, I am not married." you laugh
"Not even close? A fair maiden like yourself can't be far off!"
Fili wraps his arm around his brother, slapping his back harder than a friendly pat.
"He's joking! Don't mind him, he's had a few drinks."
You laugh once more. "Not a worry! No, I don't have any suitors."
"Neither does Fili! Wow, you have so much in common."
Fili mentally facepalms.
Your cheeks turn red but you laugh it off.
You don't know how it happened, but after drinking more than you thought you could handle with the dwarves, it was suddenly settled that you would join them on their quest, Gandalf having stated that they might need your cleverness.
"You might need my what-now?" you ask with wide eyes.
"It will be very good for you." Gandalf spoke, to which Bilbo gave you an apologetic look
"He said the same thing to me."
You turn to look at Fili and Kili, who both look extremely excited
"You're not scared of trolls or goblins are you?" Fili asked you in a playful tone
"No, but I am scared of arrogant dwarves" you responded just as playfully
After that night, your life would never be the same. All because a certain "arrogant" dwarf had spilt ale on your dress.

THE HOBBIT
Bagginshield
Multichapter Fics & Collections
A Moment in the Sun with You ~ COMPLETE In a world where Erebor never fell and the races have specific gifts, Bilbo and Thorin still meet.
Thorin has lived his entire life in the mountain and has only known his neighbors. The Summit that is held between all the free peoples of Middle Earth every century is his opportunity to branch out more. There, he meets Bilbo Baggins, King of the Shire. A friendship quickly blossoms between them and they resolve to use their Gifts and resources to help each other deal with the rising Orc problem.
Feelings follow after, though Thorin is confused why Bilbo continues to flirt with him when he has a partner. Bilbo is frustrated that Thorin doesn't pick up on his flirting and thinks that Thorin only likes him as a friend. They are idiots.
Courage to Soar ~ WIP Bilbo is tasked with garnering more attention for Erebor's gymnastics team to save the program. It seemed straight forward, despite not knowing anything about gymnastics. Thorin Durinson, however, was anything but straight forward, and Bilbo can't help but be intrigued.
How Ardently ~ WIP Bilbo Baggins lives in the boarding house he owns with his closest friends. Their lives are disturbed in all sorts of way by the arrival of the Lords of Erebor, two brothers, and their entourage. Bilbo cannot stand the oldest brother, Thorin, who is proud and makes no effort to hide it. He would glad write the dwarf off entirely, except the younger brother is quickly falling for Bilbo's closest friend, Ori, and he can't do anything to jeopardize it.
A Pride and Prejudice AU

Enter Thorin Oakenshield.
You're a King & I'm a Lionheart ~ WIP After the battle, Bilbo is in the wrong place in the wrong time. Everyone thinks he ran as soon as he knew Thorin was safe, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Bilbo gets to learn a lot about how people think of him while desperately trying to make someone understand that he's been there the whole time. Albeit, the body that has stayed by Thorin's bedside is not quite his own.

HC's about your pregnancy and how the boys would take care of you
I have some cute ideas in my mind. Let your dearest dwarf take care of you 🖤🌷 Thank's for all your support and love. I hope you will enjoy my HC's
Sorry for any mistake. As you know, English is not my native language 🙏
Characters: Bofur, Thorin, Kili, Fili, Dwalin and Ori
Tumblr media
Bofur
After you told him about your pregnancy, he was overjoyed! He has always wanted to become a father one day and you are fulfilling a big dream for him.
He loves to spoil you. Bofur is very excited and looks forward to his child.
When fears and worries rob you of your sleep, Bofur sings something for you. His sensual voice always calms you down, and that helps you fall asleep.
On some nights, when you lie in the sheets together, he quietly sings to his unborn child. He gently lays his head on your lap and looks at your belly with love. These moments are very special and beautiful.
He is already making toys for his unborn child. Hand-sized horses carved from wood, dolls, and much more.
Tumblr media
Thorin
Your pregnancy has brought you two even closer together. He loves you with all his heart and soul. A dream comes true for him.
You are so special to him. He will protect you and his child with his life. He would die for you both.
You love his tender kisses on your stomach. You love it when he caresses you gently. He gives you the feeling of safety.
If you are not feeling well (nausea, headache), then Thorin will take care of you. He knows that on some days you have to deal with the negative aspects of pregnancy. But you're not alone.
He’ll gently stroke your hair while your head is resting on his lap, while you cry softly. You will never be alone. He is there for you. Always and at any time.
He will tell you in his gentle voice that everything will be fine. You will hear words full of love that will make your heart laugh again.
You take a lot of walks in the forest and in the mountains because you love the peace that surrounds you.
Tumblr media
Kili
Kili is a bit afraid at first. After all, he is going to be a father. But what should a father be like? He is really nervous, but with you by his side, with his one great love, it can only be wonderful.
With each passing day, he rejoices in your pregnancy. He will become a father!
He is over-cautious and overprotective. If anyone is rude to you - God have mercy on them! Kili will make sure to teach them manners!
He will ride for you to every town to get you what you long for. No matter what it is and at any time. You´re his princess and as such, he will treat you.
Kili is looking for closeness to you. Even more than before. You both spend the nights full of love and affection.
He will let you know how beautiful you are. How beautiful your belly is, where new life is growing. Oh, Kili is so proud of you. And he is a proud dwarf to have such a wonderful woman by his side.
Tumblr media
Fili
Fili is so happy! With the news about your pregnancy, you made him the proudest dwarf in the world. His beautiful wife brings new life into the world! Who would not be happy and proud?
Fili knows that you are going through a special time and that you need every support, and you will get it from him. He does most of the housework because he doesn't want you to overwork yourself.
He takes walks with you and the fresh air is always good for you. You love to spend the afternoons in nature and talk about your future. About the new life that is growing in your belly.
When the evenings become colder, Fili wraps a warm blanket around you, covering up your beautiful belly so that you and the baby stay warm. He wants to prevent you from catching a cold under all circumstances.
He will prepare baths for you, with fragrant oils, and petals of flowers. And while you take a bath, he admires you, caressing your belly, while he keeps looking at you gently. Full of love.

A King's Bounty, Part 2
Pairing: f!Reader x Thorin Oakenshield
Part 1
Description: Y/N is a bounty hunter sent to kill the exiled King Under the Mountain, but makes a deal that will benefit them both. What she doesn't know is that this deal might change both of their fates.
A/N: I'm drunk, don't text
Ya'll, can anyone tell me how to do a "read more" break on this new tumblr editor? I hate not being able to do it and I am so confused. Hi old
Warnings: none I don't think
---------------------------------------------------
"Idiots."
Y/N laid fully bound on the ground surrounded by the majority of the party, while 3 trolls turned a few of the dwarves over on a spit over a large fire. Although the dwarves seemed to be in a precarious situation, she had faith that the Hobbit-burglar had the situation well in hand. Unlike the dwarves, she had dealt with halflings in the past and knew that they were more cunning and charming than anyone else in Middle Earth. Bilbo, especially, seemed to have a way with words. He need only distract them until sunrise, she thought. Only she and Thorin lay quietly while the others fussed and fidgeted, protesting. If they would stop being such idiots, we might just survive this.

"They... they have worms!" Bilbo proclaimed, gesturing wildly toward the bound party. Fili, Kili, and a few others began protesting, claiming that they did not have any parasites. But Thorin, getting wise, saw the game at hand and began kicking his kin. Y/N found herself impressed not only by the king's wisdom, but how quickly the party followed his lead, immediately proclaiming to the trolls how riddled they were with worms and pests and how unhealthy they were to eat.
As the trolls argued to themselves about whether or not the dwarves were safe to eat, Y/N caught Thorin's eye and gave him what she hoped was an encouraging smile. She knew that it wouldn't be the first or last time that the king would save his kin with his wisdom and wherewithal.
It seemed the trolls bickered endlessly, until out of the corner of her eye, Y/N saw Gandalf slinking along the shadows of the trees. At last, he struck a boulder with his staff, revealing the light of dawn and freezing the trolls in their spot. Gandalf and Bilbo helped to untie the company from their bounds as everyone, filled with relieved laughter, returned to their campsite. Y/N thanked Bilbo for his quick thinking and turned to Thorin, expecting the same. She was disappointed to see the exiled king slink back to the camp without acknowledging the hobbit at all, which she felt was unfair considering that his quick mind had helped save the entire company. If he is not careful, his pride will be his downfall, she thought to herself as she walked back to the camp.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The next morning, the company raided the trolls' hoard and found several treasures within. Y/N lingered near the doorway, keeping watch for enemies as the others plucked golden coins and silver weapons from the trove. Her eyes shot to Thorin as he pulled a particularly ornate sword, confirming it to be of fine elfin make. She watched as his eyes, though skeptical, took in the fine craftmanship of the weapon and sheathed it to his side. Even his aversion to elves could not temper his appreciation for fine weapon craftsmanship. It looked well on him, a fine sword for a fine man.
With such a handsome weapon at his hip, Y/N took advantage of the moment to really assess Thorin Oakenshield. Sure, she had known vaguely of his appearance when she had, at first, accepted his bounty. It was no trouble for her, a human, to tackle a dwarf and put him at a disadvantage in order to extract the bargain that she now worked within.
But Thorin was different than other marks. That much she had already learned.
Even from the first night with the company at Bag End, Y/N had sensed that Thorin Oakenshield's purpose gave him an identity and strength not shared even by his own kin. It was not only his attitude but his stature which gave her this impression, him being 5'2", marginally taller than may of his dwarven kin.
Not that it mattered. Thorin could have been 4 feet tall and not lacked a single shred of dignity, and Y/N could have imagined why his kin would be so keen to bend the knee. He had a quiet yet strong demeanor about him that simply commanded respect without him demanding it, and even Y/N felt keen to follow his leadership. Which was unusual, considering that as a bounty hunter, Y/N worked for herself and herself alone. Perhaps that was why she was on such high alert. She was unused to feeling beholden to anyone, and yet she felt a strong pull to the future King Under the Mountain. She reasoned it only had to do with the wealth she was promised, but as she watched him brandishing Orcrist in the dim light and felt a definite leap in her heartbeat, it was hard to be certain.
----------------------------------------------
The company pressed onward, led by Gandalf, to the safe haven of Rivendell. Y/N was always pleased to be in the company of elves, but the rest of the party, aside from Bilbo, was irritable at the prospect of having to accept elfin hospitality. Thorin in particular seemed thorny in his approach to Lord Elrond, in spite knowing that the group needed not only rest, but assistance from the great elf king.
After freshening up in the guest room offered to her by the House of Elrond, Y/N stood on a charming balcony overlooking Rivendell wearing a simple, yet flattering elfin gown. She took in a deep breath, appreciating the brief moment of respite during their long journey and allowed herself to feel peace and relaxation , knowing that the party was, for a night, protected from orcs and other evil creatures. She heard footsteps behind her and turned, surprised to see Thorin approaching, also freshened, cleaned, and re-dressed.
"How do you faire, my lady?" he asked quietly as he approached. Y/N noticed he had combed through his hair and beard, as well as perfumed himself with a lovely, masculine aroma.
"I am no 'lady'", she snorted, turning back toward the city's view. "But I am well. It is a relief to know a peaceful night of sleep lays ahead." She glanced at Thorin out of the corner of her eye, not missing the twitch of his lip at her words. "Do you not agree, my lord? We are fortunate that the elves give us sanctuary."
"Indeed," Thorin replied, although it was through his teeth. Y/N smirked, knowing the entire situation was getting under the proud dwarf's skin. For reasons she could not explain, it gave her pleasure to humble the would-be King in such a way.
"How do you find the company's treatment?" Thorin asked abruptly, catching Y/N by surprise.
"My lord?"
"Do you feel comfortable?" Thorin did not meet her eyes, but continued looking out over the balcony at the expanse of Rivendell. "If not, I should like to speak to whomever makes you feel outcast."
"Would you do the same for Bilbo?" Y/N blurted out, not thinking. As the only woman in the company, she had felt a certain sense of being outcast, but it paled in comparison to the hobbit. Bilbo knew keenly that Thorin cared not for him, in spite of his kin's warm regard for the burglar.
"If the halfling could so much as hold a sword as well as you, I would not have to," Thorin replied smoothly.
Y/N swallowed and carefully considered her response. After a beat, she responded, "although your words flatter me, your praise pales in comparison to your callousness."
Thorin shot her a sharp look then.
"Without Bilbo, we would not have made it here. It is thanks to him we escaped the trolls. As a king," Y/N drew in a breath, knowing she was crossing a line, but proceeded, "you would do well to recognize the contributions of those you deem to be below you. A good ruler capitalizes on every strength offered to him, not only the ones that he understands." She held her breath for a moment, looking intently at a tree in the near distance so as not to meet Thorin's eyes.
After a beat, the dwarf king responded. "Perhaps you are right. Are you always so blunt?" His last question seemed irritated, yet Y/N was sure she caught the slightest smile playing on the corners of Thorin's mouth.
"Only to those strong enough to hear it," Y/N responded honestly, and Thorin did give a genuine, yet rueful smile in response.
"I admit," he said with a deep breath, "I am unsure of what to make of you. You assist the quest purely for gold, and yet you champion the honor of a halfling. You have proven yourself a worthy fighter, and still..." Thorin trailed off, his eyes flashing between Y/N's and the scenery. "At the moment, well... an elfin queen should be so lucky to look as lovely in that gown."
Y/N's eyebrows shot up as Thorin's cheeks turned pink and he gave her a brief nod without eye contact. She felt her jaw drop open slightly as the king turned on his heel and strode toward the dining room. In that moment, Y/N could have sworn that Thorin Oakenshield was eight feet tall.
