I'm not planning on playing the gollum game (lol) but I kinda unironically love Thranduil's design?? of course they botched his beautiful face (what is it with LOTR adaptations making Elves look old?) but the costume is absolutely unique and definitely woodland-like. You come across a guy like this in the woods and you'd immediately know he's not human.
The colors are lovely and appropriately deep, rich and earthen, the crown is very impressive, and you get a really good sense of textures and weight. It delights me to no end that he's wearing actual wood, ferns and feathers, and even opaque stone-like gemstones. Oh, and the whole outfit is very beetle-inspired? The hard outer shell, the scarab tones of the fabric, the general shape of the robes, especially seen from the back, and the transparent outer cape like a delicate insect wing... It's not an animal I'd have necessarily associated with wood-elves myself but the look definitely works here.
And finally, the fact that his hair is bound in a very wild way. Heck yeah! This isn't some ethereal, otherworldly being, rather it's a very deeply natural being. Unlike what the Hobbit did with Thranduil (very nice face tho, no complaints there) you can tell at a glance that he's no Noldo/that he's fundamentally different from either Elrond or Galadriel.
From what I've seen they also did his characterization a little less dirty than the Hobbit movies did. (Not by much. He feels somewhat reminiscent of book!Denethor, idk.)

things i did and didn’t like about rings of power (so you don’t have to watch it)
disclaimer: if you do want to watch it for whatever reason, please don’t pay for it, find a way to pirate it, don’t give jeff bezos any of your money. If you did really like it i totally respect that, i hope you enjoy it, these are just my personal opinions.
things i did like:
the worldbuilding and set design is gorgeous, on par with the movies and i’d tentatively say the cgi is better than the hobbit trilogy. If that’s the kind of thing you’re interested in, i’d say it’s worth a watch. However, you’d probably waste less time by googling screenshots
the dwarves are DELIGHTFUL. they’re a little different than Hobbit movie or Lotr dwarves, but they feel like Tolkien dwarves and they have a ton of personality and charisma. Disa is gorgeous and hilarious. And while she doesn’t have a beard, she does have sideburns that you couldn’t really see in the promo pics of her. (the dwarves don’t show up until episode 2 tho). They were probably my favorite part of the show so far.
The girl they cast to play Nori is super adorable and cute. The actors in general for the hobbits are very charming even if they look horrifically stinky and filthy.
Morfydd clark doesn’t exactly feel or look like galadriel, but she does feel like an elf (unlike all the other elves in this show). If you forget she’s supposed to be galadriel she’s cool to watch even though the elves in this show are, in general, absurd. She’s clearly a good actor even though you can tell the directing on her part wasn’t great, there’s a lot of Very Dramatic squinting and Staring on her part and she has some ridiculous lines.
I actually really like the guy playing elrond. He also does feel like an elf and although he looks like a fancy hobbit, he’s the only one in the show i feel like is trying to be the character from the books he was cast as. If they did better stuff with his makeup and hair he could really be great. Idk maybe season 2 they’ll give him better hair or some Fenty diamond veil.
the elves’ (regular) costumes actually look a lot better on screen than they do in promo pics. Not super elfy, but enough of a fancy king-arthur feel for me to give it a pass. Much better than house of the dragon costumes (so far) or most of the non-important costumes in game of thrones.
things i didn’t like:
hoo boy.
i Mean i could go on and on about what the HELL were they thinking with the elves. Maybe not all the elves in the hobbit movies or lotr looked super elfy themselves (craig parker ily but you do look like A Dad) but the nasty looking short hair?
Tumblr media
neo-n@zi style undercuts?
Tumblr media
If they were going to do short hair they could have tried something. Idk. more romantic looking? or like cherub curls or soft floaty waves? there is so much hairspray in those elves’ hair. The ears are massive, thick and ugly looking. Their Token Diverse Elf guy is, other than galadriel’s brother, the only sort of unusual looking one to be passably cast as an elf but either he is a very bad actor or he was Very badly directed. His lines are awful. He’s supposed to be in love with this human chick but there is nothing about how they met, why they like each other, what they have in common, anything. No chemistry whatsoever. He’s also got a very stupid, plastic-looking costume.
Also. They cast maybe the strangest oatmeal faced dudes they could find in britain as elves. What is this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The elves armor is very stupid looking. Plain plate armor that is a matte grey for some reason, which i assume was to give it a softer look but really just ended up looking like it was spray painted, same with the chain mail they have under the armor.
so much of this show had me going “wait, WHAT? why is that happening?” i knew this was mostly made up and wouldn’t have a lot directly from the silm or appendicies, but just trying to understand it narratively was baffling. They reference all these things they never explain.
Galadriel talks about all the people she lost that the orcs / morgoth took from her but all you get is a seconds long scene of her looking at her dead brother. None of these other multitudes of people she’s lost are mentioned. A lot of stuff happens like this, just some character being like “oh this happened so thats why i have Emotional Damage,” and just moving on without any explanation. No chance to really get to know the characters, apart from a little bit with galadriel and she has very little backstory other than being Full of Need For Revenge.
WHY ARE THE HOBBITS SO DIRTY. WHY.
Tumblr media
they clearly know how to live off the land and build things, they’re not anywhere far away from water, but they are just COVERED with dirt and their hair is matted and absolutely nasty, their clothes are stained with sweat, their teeth are super yellow. they all look disgusting and i have no clue why. All the hobbits having an irish accent and there being a decent number of brown people among them unlike the elves or humans but them looking so gross feels Bad like a microaggression. but like i said in another post since I’m white and also not irish i feel like this isn’t something that’s my place to break down and discuss. The whole time they looked so gross that i was just cringing. They do act like hobbits tho.
Just random plot threads and scenes that were so bizarre and cliche that they didn’t need to put in when there’s So much more interesting things to pull from in the appendicies. Sauron apparently leaves this Mark everywhere that looks like a trident and the elves just DON’T KNOW what it means.
Tumblr media
why is sauron marking his victims like a serial killer? Why are there orcs poisoning cattle? why the hell did bronwyn’s son find that orc sword / morgoth’s sword / sauron’s sword or whatever? These are plot threads that are obviously put in there to make it supposedly interesting, but they’re all overused tropes from other stuff that afaik aren’t related to/established by anything that happens in silm or lotr, while they could have used so many other interesting things from the text instead. It feels VERY geared towards like, 8-12 year olds, but way too slow for them. Some things they rushed through, while other scenes, especially dialogue scenes with the humans, just dragged on without really giving any interesting information or character development.
there was this whole scene with galadriel escaping a sea monster for some reason which didn’t make sense, i don’t see why we could have seen more of her backstory instead, but i mean peter jackson did that kind of thing pretty often in lotr and the hobbit so whatever. It wasn’t actually even that interesting of a fight and they didn’t even show more than a fin either which was kind of disappointing.
galadriel being a Girlboss full of Revenge. I guess there’s ways to do that that i could have believed but it’s just So dramatic i just kept grimacing the whole time. Since she’s the main character pretty much, this doesn’t help. Opening with her as a very dour looking child building a boat out of paper was a really strange choice.
the “diversity” being all talk and no substance. Wild to me that amazon went to all that trouble to toot their own horn about diversity and piss off the racists and then didn’t actually bother. Yeah there’s brown hobbits, and a few brown dwarves. Galadriel’s company that she commands is 100% white and male. I saw maybe one east asian person. The border guards where the love struck elf guy works are all men. The dwarves with speaking roles are men other than Disa.
it’s bizarre, it’s all over the place, the lines sound like generic fantasy rpg #28, only a couple of them were actually taken from the text, it’s a sausage fest, the elves suck. The dwarves are cool and the one thing that really feels like Tolkien in the whole show. The worldbuilding is pretty. The music is kind of nice but not really noticeable. It has very little resemblance to anything middle-earthy, it’s very juvenile, and very boring. anyway. That’s about it.

Episode 5: OK, so I was wrong, I apologize Adar is great. Still not convinced that Halbrand will have a good story arc. MORE SAURON THEORIES COMING UP. Also for some reason the older elves are growing on me goddammit. Galadriel is growing on me a bit. The Harfoots are still cute.
Epsiode 6: So I was fucking wrong about this show being bad. Adar is amazing why is everyone in this show so amazing????? Elendil and Isildur give me life. Is this show really making me ship Galdriel and Halbrand? well, I guess I have no other choice. I am starting to realize that I care more about all of these characters than I thought I would. That KISS I need it framed and hung in the louvre. "AND THEO" I AM SCREAMING!!!

"riddle"? ~~I always want to know what Est is up to~~
vibing, mostly :D
mm that one's another off a prompts-list-ask-game-thing. i started it, tho it was real late at night and i haven't gone back to see if it's actually like. coherent at all lmao. sometimes i get interesting things that way and sometimes it just doesn't make any sense
but! it was more or less a little 'what if est mained blueline instead of yellow' (conclusion: a lot of things might have to change, but the biggest is probably not getting stuck in edhelion getting attacked). i was thinking a bit about dnf, and it being the only skill runekeepers have under 'visions and fortellings', and also about 'our fates entwined'. also about how i never really did much with est's mirror of galadriel prophecy in her main verse- didn't end up planning anything for it in this thing either, but. did consider it lol

17 and 18 for Rings of Power!
The Rings of Power themed asks. 🍃✨
Tumblr media
17. What are your thoughts on the original characters? Do you like them? (For example: Nori, Bronwyn, Adar)
I absolutely adore all the original characters in the series and their arcs are usually the ones I am most invested in. The whole arcs with the Southlands (yeah I know they don't exist anymore) was such a joy to watch.
Someone on twitter refereed to Arondir as the "the elfest elf that ever elfed" and I think that is more than accurate. He is kind, noble, determined and just so good in every way. The interactions between him and Adar? This bond of both mutual respect and attempting to understand the other, but ultimately taking a different path in the end. I love his relationship with Bronwyn, they way they are so dedicated to each other but also willing to let the other go for a greater sake. They way they support and comfort each other throughout the series <3<3
Bronwyn is great too, probably my favorite female character from the series. She is also kind and very courageous and they way she is ready to take up a weapon to defend others and how she ends up taking the responsibility for coordinating resources and shelter for the people fleeing from the uruks. They way she unconditionally loves her son and Arondir <3<3
There are many more great original characters, but this is already getting so long
18. What are your thoughts on the portrayal of the canon characters? (For example: Galadriel and Elrond)
I am gonna preface this by saying that the only books of Tolkien I've read by now are the Hobbit and the Silmarillion so my knowledge on the lotr triology is mostly based on the movies. (Also I'm gonna stick with Miriel, Elrond and Galadriel here because I have the most thoughts about them)
I do like the changes the made to Miriel's character. I remember reading the Silm and wondering what Numenor might have been like under her reign and how sad it was that so much of her character is just a victim, a victim of Ar-Pharazôn and Sauron and later on a victim of Numenor being turned into Atlantis. Miriel in Trop just feels so refreshing compared to that. I wish the Numenor arc would have gotten a bit more attention, especially the relationship between Miriel and her father, but all the episodes with her
Elrond, is Elrond. He's fine The scenes with him in it always feel a bit odd tho. I recently started watching the series with my mother and she said about him: "He sounds like a politician" and I couldn't agree more. Now, I am aware that this is what the show is going for and the way he carries himself and his speech make sense for the position he holds at Gil-galads court. What makes scenes with feel so odd to me is that he seems to carry this behavior into these very personal scenes where he interacts with Disa and Durin and because of that they don't seem as heartfelt and intimate as they should. I mean, especially the scene where Durin voices his anger over the disagreement with his father and Elrond explains the relationship with his father, it sounds like he is reciting something and not offering insight on his friend. Although that part could also be a result of the German voice actors performance. I doesn't matter either way, this is a interpretation of Elronds character, a legitimate one and I don't hate it. It is fine. His haircut is always a joy to look at.
Galadriel is just like that. Idk I mean you have these really great aspects that you can base her story off. The death of her brother and husband, the survivors guilt, this feeling of restlessness and also this fear of going to the west and possibly thinking that she might not deserve it yet. And then they go ahead and show her to be this really cold, selfish and manipulative character and I am just asking myself where it went wrong.
And yes, those are flaws, every good character has those. But I feel with the way her story and character is written, she just comes of as utterly unlikable. I am not interested in seeing her evolve and change for the better, or face the consequences for her actions because her motivation seems so weird and her struggles seem to be non-existant. I mean Celeborns death for example has had such a big impact on her, I don't understand why they did not hint at that sooner in the show until her conversation with Halbrand (?) Why didn't they show her grieving, why do they never show her struggling with her values and believes, why is the majority of her arc her just try to find and destroy Sauron and not doing anything else? Also, the whole thing with taking the boat to the west. You could have done so much with that. But in the show you just see her conversation with Elrond about it where she makes it clear that she won't accept this gift from Gil-galad with the reason that he work isn't finished. And then the next scene is just her on the boat. I mean, this is literally a journey with no return why did they not show her trying to come terms with that or her fear of leaving her friends and Middle Earth behind, her feeling that she might not worthy of accepting something like that. (Maybe also her wondering if she will see her family again. I mean in Tolkiens work Finrod was allowed to leave the Halls of Mandos)
Like, I don't get it. I really don't. I am not a fan of her arc during the first season and neither is my mother (who hasn't seen all the episodes yet).
Thanks for asking!

Quote time!
Your absence is my only winter
From every corner of time where I no longer have the energy / my love / take me away
I do not know / whether it's a fantasy / or just a folly
My dearest one, my darling dear
The sky is her roof / the earth is her bed
Ooooo
Okay so I have been suffering from Too Much Tolkien Brainrot recently (sorry lol), so full disclaimer, that just maybe miiiiight sliiightly affect my replies :D Also I am in a horribly angsty mood (I blame The Last Homely Server on discord for this, it's just either angst or the randomest memes with no in-between)
Your absence is my only winter - I'm very tempted to just be predictable about this and say it's Elrond/Celebrían angst after Celebrían sails. (Tho I might flip it around and make it Celebrían centric and write about how even in Valinor, even as she is actually finding the peace and healing she went to seek, she still misses Elrond and grieves that she has to be parted from him. So kind of making it like "everything else is good, I love it here and I am doing well, but I love you and I miss you and I wish you could be here by my side", instead of the usual Elrond grieving her perspective that most fics are.) Or, alternatively, I think it could be a fun title for one of those "well I keep thinking about it but I've never written it" fics about Celeborn during the Siege of Imladris in the War of Elves and Sauron in the second age - cuz for some reason I'm personally really fond of the version of events where Galadriel and Celebrían have moved to Doriath but Celeborn hasn't followed them there yet, and still lives in Eregion when it falls, and is among the survivors who escape and join Elrond's forces, and so ends up in Rivendell as it's being founded. So I think this would be also a fun title of a fic that's about him during those events, trapped waiting out a seemingly endless, hopeless siege as Sauron conquers more and more of Middle-Earth, and he's far from his wife and his daughter and he misses them so much and he worries because things are bad and he doesn't even know if they're still alive anymore, what if Lórien has fallen, what if they're dead or something else horrible has happened to them?
From every corner of time where I no longer have the energy / my love / take me away - hmm. This is kind of difficult. It's some kind of angst, definitely, and as I said, head full of Tolkien brainrot so nothing else is coming to mind rn, but beyond that I'm not quite sure. Possibly some kind of angsty Eärendil/Elwing stuff long after the events of Silmarillion, exploring how the whole "eternally sailing the night sky" thing affects him, just him being So Tired of it all, with Elwing's presence and meeting her when he returns near Valinor again as one of the only good things, only moments of relief in his life
I do not know / whether it's a fantasy / or just a folly - again, I'm not sure. For some reason the idea that came to my mind was Boromir and Faramir as kids (like Faramir just on the brink of his teenage years, Boromir as older teenager who's starting to take on a lot of important responsibilities but is still very much a kid, maybe), and Faramir just being fed-up with feeling like Denethor considers him the lesser of them and trying in some way to prove his worth/strength/bravery probably in some way that's kinda risky and not a particularly good idea. But idk, I'm not entirely sold on the idea to be honest
My dearest one, my darling dear - hmm I don't really know. Somehow what comes to my mind with this is a parental relationship more than one between lovers, idk why? Maybe something Gílraen-centric of her raising Aragorn in Rivendell? I really dunno where the idea came from, and I don't know any further what the plot would be, though
The sky is her roof / the earth is her bed - this one's really difficult for some reason. Also while I like the vibes of this, I don't think this would be a Tolkien fic for me. Idk what it would be tho. Sorry, boring answer, but while I like this I really can't think of anything!

listen reading the silmarillion is a trip and not just because of the vampires and werewolves and túrin's whole entire story arc okay but also bc at some point you have to come to grips with the fact that galadriel is literally older than the sun and moon and frankly i don't know what to do with that information

Fëanorian Quenya
Hey friends! Do you like elves? Do you like the Silmarillion? Do you like Fëanor and co? And most of all, do you like spending hours thinking about minor details pertaining to made-up languages??? If so, boy do I have a treat for you! Let’s delve into the weird world of Fëanorian Quenya and explore some history and mechanics of why they talk Like That.
I’ve seen a lot of posts joking about the Fëanorian lisp, which is about as funny as a joke about a speech impediment can be. 👍 It’s important to understand, though, that this IS a joke. No, they didn’t really speak with a lisp. Yes, they did pronounce some S sounds as TH. That’s the critical disclaimer here: SOME. It’s not a blanket pronunciation. There’s a lot of background research that goes into determining which words would be pronounced with S and which would be TH, and that’s what we’re going to look at.
So if this is something you’ve come across in fandom and you’re not totally sure on the details, or if you ARE sure and just want some more in-depth info, read on.
The stuff probably everybody knows already
For anyone who’s been hanging around the Fëanorian corner of the Silm fandom for more than three minutes, there’s about a 100% chance you’ve heard of Fëanor’s penchant for retaining an archaic TH pronunciation after the majority of the Noldor went ahead and started pronouncing this sound as S instead. You may also know that this sound is represented by the letter thorn (Þ) in HoME, but since thorn doesn’t exist in modern English orthography and it’s a pain to keep typing the ALT code, I’m sticking to TH here. Anyway, all this was due to the fact that Fëanor was a huge mama’s boy, and his mom Míriel Therindë (later called Serindë, which made Fëanor want to punch walls and possibly also fellow elves) was an outlier who retained the TH after it fell out of use. Her son Fëanor, in turn, kept this up to honor her. Now, whether or not he would have bothered if this sound hadn’t literally been a critical part of her name is debatable, but that debate is outside the scope of this essay.
Fëanor continued to use the TH pronunciation until his death, and required his sons to use it as well. Finwë, however, switched over to S after the death of Míriel and before his marriage to Indis. Fëanor, reasonable and level-headed as he was, took this as a personal insult and decided that anybody who rejected TH likewise rejected him. So presumably, his loyal followers would have obeyed his totally reasonable demands not to give in to the seductive S-shift.
Why tho
Why did the Noldor decide to alter their pronunciation from TH to S? Great question. Nobody really knows. For the hell of it? IDK. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But the important thing to understand is that elves, and especially Noldor, were really committed to making sure their language sounds cool. This is why it changed so much and so comparatively quickly for an immortal population: they were actively invested in changing it. They liked inventing new words and exploring new sounds and messing around with grammar.
So at some point some influential Noldo might have been like, hey y’all, let’s stop saying TH and say S instead! And everyone (except Míriel I guess, who was known for her elegant manner of speech and didn’t want to muck that up by changing pronunciation of a whole letter) was like, whoa, capital idea my good egg. And they went with it. Previous ideas along these lines included ‘hey y’all, let’s stop saying KH and say H instead’ and ‘hey y’all, let’s stop saying Z and say R instead’, and those went over swimmingly. Nobody could have foreseen the problem this TH to S business would cause.
Now here’s a fun fact. There was another change to Noldorin pronunciation that happened AFTER Fëanor’s birth, that he himself was involved in. This one was all about bilabial to labiodental F. And those sure are some words, so if you don’t know what I’m talking about (I don’t blame you), BILABIAL is a more whispery sound that happens when you say F using only air passing through your pursed lips, and LABIODENTAL is when you say F with your top teeth touching your bottom lip. Going forward I’m going to use PH to represent the bilabial sound, and F for the labiodental.
So F got on the radar of the Noldor via the Teleri, who used this sound in their language. And ol’ Fëanor figured it would be awesome to incorporate it into Quenya because he thought the PH sounded too close to HW, and the two were getting confused by lazy speakers. Why did he care? Because of his dad’s name and his own, of course. If people started to get lazy in their pronunciation, we’d end up with Hwinwë and Hwëanáro, which would be terrible and stupid and unacceptable. He accused the Vanyar of leaning down that road, and he wanted to stop that kind of shift before it happened to the Noldor. How to do that? Why, by instigating a different shift from traditional Noldorin PH to Telerin F!
“Hey y’all, let’s stop saying PH and say F instead!”
“Whoa, capital idea my good egg.”
Moral of the story: Fëanor is only concerned with Quenya pronunciation insofar as it affects his own name and the names of family members he likes. He does not care whether it’s staying the same or moving to a new sound so long as it personally makes him feel good and his name sound cool. Therefore the true way to piss him off would be to call him Curuhwinwë Hwëanáro, son of Serindë.
Okay so here’s how it works
Now that history is out of the way, let’s get back to how TH was used by the Fëanorians. As I mentioned earlier, TH wasn’t a blanket pronunciation. It all depended on the original form of the word, and whether the root had a TH or an S. And some very similar-sounding words come from different roots, so this can get tricky. A great resource that’ll give you this information is Eldamo: Quenya words where the S was originally TH are marked out with the Þ (thorn) symbol in the wordlist.
Some examples:
Súlë (spirit, breath) comes from the root THŪ, which means it would be pronounced with a TH. Silma (white crystal) comes from the root SIL, so it and related words like Silmaril would be pronounced with an S. No Fëanorian would say Thilmaril. Isil (moon), however, is a similar-sounding word that comes from a different root: THIL. Olos (mass of flowers) comes from the word LOTH, but: Olos (dream) comes from the root LOS. Fëanorian pronunciation would immediately differentiate between these two words.
While Fëanorians may have retained the distinct pronunciation of TH vs S, other Noldor can still differentiate between original S and S-that-used-to-be-TH in their writing. There are specific tengwar to use depending on the word’s original form. Silmë (the one that looks like a 6) is used for original S, while súlë (or thúlë, the one that looks like an h) is used for original TH.
Which other elves used this sound in their speech?
Fandom has really latched on to this TH as a Fëanorian thing, but it wasn’t that exclusively. The TH sound was actually ubiquitous in other elven languages, and in Valinor, only the Noldor dropped it. It was still used in Telerin and in Vanyarin Quendya. The Vanyar retained the TH not because of anything to do with Míriel, but just because they were a little more conservative and their language didn’t pick up on all the changes that the Noldor made. They also noped out of the Z to R shift the Noldor initiated, opting to keep the Z around.
When Indis married Finwë, she stopped using the normal Vanyarin TH and switched over to S as a gesture of loyalty to him and his people. Finarfin, however, out of love for the Vanyar and Teleri, switched BACK to TH. I like to think about how much it would have annoyed Fëanor that his snot-nosed kid brother was speaking correctly, but for the wrong reason. Go down one more generation, and Galadriel very specifically did not use TH. But this time it was absolutely a choice made as a glaring middle finger to Fëanor.
What this means for your fanfic or whatever
The big takeaway here: you can’t just have Fëanorians replace every S with TH and call it a day.
If you’re inventing names for your Fëanorian OCs or coming up with phrases for them to say, it’s important to look into the history of all Quenya S-words you end up using to determine if they should be S or TH. If Fëanor got mad about somebody saying Serindë instead of Therindë, he’d get equally mad about somebody saying Thilmaril instead of Silmaril and assume they were mocking him. Remember: this is a dude with no chill. (On the other hand, if you WANT somebody to be mocking Fëanor, Galadriel would 100% do this because she has an equally negligible amount of chill.)
It’s also important to note that the TH isn’t a true shibboleth, since pretty much all elves EXCEPT the non-Fëanorian Noldor use it. And even the S-preferring Noldor would still be able to pronounce the TH. Those who went into exile would go on to use it commonly in Sindarin, and those who remained in Valinor would still encounter it among the Vanyar and Teleri. So if you’re writing a scene where somebody has to pronounce a TH word to prove their loyalty… yeah, everyone can pass this test. And in the opposite direction, you can’t use TH to prove somebody’s an evil Fëanorian, either. They might just be Vanyarin or something. Or, like. Really Old.
Would the sons (and followers) of Fëanor keep using TH after his death? Oh hell yeah. This is an entire family unfamiliar with the concept of not dying on hills. They will keep using it unto the ending of the world. Actually, with Sindarin becoming the common language of Middle-earth from the First Age, probably not a lot of change happened in exilic Quenya. It became a lore language: a piece of living history. It would have been preserved as it was when the original speakers left Valinor.
(And then, thousands of years later, Galadriel finally returns home to Tirion like, Long have mine eyes awaited this most blissful of sights, and ne’er hath my sprit soared with such grace, for I am returned! And all the Amanyar Noldor stare at her like, whatchu bangin on bout, eh? Because they had nothing better to do in the peace of Valinor than push Quenya to brave and frankly questionable new horizons.)
Anyway, there you go: a somewhat brief history of Fëanorian Quenya. I hope you found this informative and useful, or at the very least not boring. Obvs this is super condensed and, uh, not particularly scholarly, but I promise I know what I’m talking about. I have a university degree! (Not in anything even remotely related to what’s written above, but I hardly see how that’s relevant. It’s still a DEGREE.)
Questions? Need clarification or want more info? My asks are always open!

Do you have any fan casts or strong takes/feelings on the foxes’ appearances? Fandom tends to use the same Pinterest models, which feels wrong to me.
i do in fact! i've actually been meaning to make a post about how i choose to write all of the foxes' ethnicities anyway
but yes i absolutely agree that the typical pinterest model types u generally see on edits is not how i see any of them. nor is reece king or froy gutierrez or lucky blue smith one of my FCs for anyone
for a lot of them i don't necessarily have a single specific FC so much as i have like,, a general impression of features that i will see on various different people, who all may look wildly different from each other or who may not even look how i see the character as a whole but do have a specific feature i associate with them. mostly it boils down to the Energy i get tbh and that's just a Feeling i cant even explain
fun fact im a tiny bit face blind so that might account for some of why i'm so all-over about this
may as well go chronologically. some of them i definitely have more thoughts on than others
1. Dan
ethnicity: Afro Native (Sioux)
features: medium dark skin. buzzcut, killer fade. she often styles it in waves. she's very butch, wears a lot of basketball and cargo shorts, tank tops and flannels and jerseys, hiking boots. skinny but muscular, with a very rectangular body shape. defined jaw. probably like 5'4 or 5'5
FC/Energy: sometimes i get some dan energy out of janelle monae but more butch. lotta dan energy out of samira wiley. lashana lynch
2. Kevin
ethnicity: a lot of things tbd, but he's pretty multi-ethnic. i like the idea of kayleigh being half- or a quarter-japanese in addition to irish because it gives her more of a reason to go to japan for her undergrad. wymack is from d.c. which is a majority black city for its actual residents, but i also like the idea of him being Pasifika/Hawaiian. HOWEVER - and this is pretty important to my read of kevin's character - he's white passing, and has been mostly treated as a white guy who tans his whole life, like occasionally asked if he's italian maybe. learning that his father was a Distinctly Not White Man was a big shock to him.
kristin kreuk, lindsay price, phoebe cates, and marie digby are all half-asian actresses i base kayleigh on
i suppose i base his story partially on broadway actress carol channing, who revealed publically that she was a quarter black when she was like 80 years old. though maybe wentworth miller, a biracial actor who knows his father is black but also doesn't know him, is more accurate to kevin's story. then keanu reeves is a white passing actor with asian ancestry
also none of these people look anything like how i picture kevin lol. kevin is just like,, a guy. handsome ig. but kind of in a CW character kind of way
actually
kevin looks exactly like young jason momoa
3. Andrew
ethnicity: kayin/karen from myanmar
features: fat and muscular, very wide and heavy. this blog is basically all andrew body type refs. medium-olive skin, has a bit of a greyish tinge that makes him look a bit eerie or unhealthy. deep set, droopy eyes; looks so tired. flat face with a low-bridged nose. crooked teeth, especially his canines. natural hair black-ish but he bleaches it light blond. has the beginnings of martial artist punching callouses in his knuckles
FC/Energy: holy shit the characters i feel have Andrew Energy are all over the place. pedro pascal. babe ruth (yes fr). oddjob (harold sakata) from goldfinger. the jinn (mousa kraish) from american gods. gaear grimsrud (peter stormare) from fargo. takeshi kovacs (joel kinnaman) from altered carbon. and i wanna be clear, it's these characters specifically, and generally NOT the actors outside of that specific role. except pedro ❤️
4. Matt
ethnicity: cuban
appearance: matt has more of an Energy than specific features to me rn. that energy is Warm. he has that Warm bro jock dude energy. kind of a marvel hero build, hunky and muscular. very rectangular face. has this haircut:
Tumblr media
5. Aaron
i get to cut myself some slack and not go AS in depth about aaron because he and andrew are identical twins
ethnicity: kayin/karen from myanmar
appearance: similar build to andrew, less confident and casual posture and body language. less apathetically murderous and more emotive expressions. better teeth bc his mom took him to the dentist. yes also bleaches his hair
celebrities: probably a lot like the difference between the characters and the actors. andrew is the characters and aaron is how the actors actually look. idk ive never looked at someone and thought 'hey! looks like aaron!'
6. Seth
ethnicity: have been going with half-vietnamese. considering looking into various south asian possibilities like pakistani
appearance: string bean build. that's all i have to offer
7. Allison
ethnicity: allison's very up in the air for me. she and seth are the two foxes i feel fine with being white, but im committing to having no white foxes sooo. i would say i generally see her as either half-middle eastern or chinese
appearance: plus sized and hourglass shaped. heart shaped face. taller, like 5'8 or 5'9. she has a pretty fraught history with her appearance and her parents payed for/pressured her into getting a nose job to have a 'prettier' nose. she also bleaches her hair blonde. she gets it done at a salon tho the twinyards do it in their bathroom
FC/Energy: elle king and nadia aboulhosn are my main inspos for her, esp body type but nadia esp in Vibes
8. Nicky
ethnicity: multi-ethnic. his mother is southern mexican Indigenous, possibly oaxacan. his father is mixed white/kayin
appearance: definitely takes after his mother while his father is white passing. dark brown skin, warm undertones. slightly stocky build. tall ovular head and thin aquiline nose. he's kind of just,, the opposite of the twins ig, so like their facial features look very different, which is a big part of why people don't make the connection between him and the twins alongside the difference in their skin tones, heights, and builds. nicky's build and features are very vertically-oriented, with a tall head, narrow-set eyes, thin nose with a high bridge, etc. the twins are horizontally-orienged, with broad, flat faces, wide-set eyes, wide noses with a low bridge, etc.
FC/Energy: yalitza aparicio, not a guy but one of the few Mexican Indigenous stars in the film industry and i really like her features for nicky. she's oaxacan
9. Renee
ethnicity: Black. african american
appearance: plus sized, circular/apple body shape. round face. dark skin. microlocs to a bit past her chin, bleached white and dyed at the ends. she and allison go to the salon together. femme but plain style, a lot of blouses and long skirts, practical shoes. knuckle callouses. about 5'6
FC/Energy: dominique fishback. tracie thoms, esp in RENT. gabourey sidibe. nicole byer, but not in Energy. brandy, for some reason, probably bc i think she has very serene Energy and is a little bit otherworldly. like if brandy played arwen or galadriel from lotr it would make perfect sense to me, and that's the Renee Energy™️
10. Neil
ethnicity: mixed. Black/Jewish on both sides. his father is polish ashkenazi and afro-brazilian. his mother is Black British and algerian jewish
appearance: very... sharp. like sharp all over. does that make sense? sharp features, sharp face shape, sharp angles to his body. he's got what i vaguely think of as a 'basketball build' not meaning tall but meaning very rangy and angular and lean. all limbs. seth has a similar build. lighter brown skin. he has waardenburg syndrome which is actually where he gets he gets his eye color, and his eyes are very large and widely spaced as well. freckles freckles freckles. freckles everywhere. 4a hair but at least during canon it's not very healthy and thus the curls aren't well-defined. he grows it out long enough to tie back and starts taking better care of it in post-canon. wonky, slightly crooked teeth, with a gap between the fronts
FC/Energy: now neil i actually have a ton for. mostly models which im a lil ashamed of bc i do try to draw more from athletes. alton mason is a main body type ref. mugsy bogues is good to see what i mean about the basketball build without the height. here're the boys: cykeem white, luka sabbat, désiré mia, Leo Hoyte-Egan, dylan hasselbaink, this beautiful stock photo model i've never been able to track down
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think about him every. goddamn. day.
in terms of like,, real ppl and not models: corbin bleu, especially during Jump In. figure skater elladj balde. rayan "ray ray" lopez from mindless behavior. A$AP Rocky a lil bit, maybe i just like his hairstyle idk
two more models i think are important: carissa pinkston and ralph souffrant

And after that one post about Bella thinking the Cullen are a polygamous sex cult and wanting a hot piece of that...
The role of women in the Shadow of Mordor series.
Tumblr media
Look at them! Gondorian Soldiers under siege by orks, instructing their women on how to shoot their enemies due to the lack of manpower! Does this remind you of anything?
Specifically, that one post about Elrond asking Aragorn to strengthen their ranks with as of yet unseen and unexpected troops and Aragorn mistakenly assuming he wants him to recruit the women while Elrond was actually suggesting for Necromancy.
And not just that!
Tumblr media
Look at her! No boobplate, the same armor as her fellow Gondorians, and an instructed sergeant! Admidetly, she is the daughter of the top general and I assume lord regent of Minas Ithil AND her main role is mostly to guard the Minas Ithil historical archives and catalog their junk (basically, a glorified librarian with a sword), BUT Eowyn was also the daughter of the King of Rohan, yes she had to disguise herself to join the fray, this woman has rank, she has men working under her, she was at the head of a raiding party in the slums of the city defending the population during the evacuation from the Orks!
Tumblr media
And look at her! The Blade of Galadriel! here pictured about to snap to Grandpa Magpie after he just found some new shiny trinket to steal!
(”She has the light of Galadriel Talion, take the Light of Galadriel from her Talion, we must get the Light of Galadriel Talion, stop making goo goo eyes at the elven assassin that recently stabbed you to death Talion, she is not going to fuck you Talion, just take the new shiny weapon Talion, I must have the new shiny weapon Talion...!”)
She is a kickass assassin! With a diverse cast of supporting Uruk Characters! And admittedly a boob plate BUT STILL! SHE IS A WOMAN! WHO KILLS PEOPLE! WITH SWORDS!
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, also Shelob is being played by Yennefer of Vengerberg in this game, and used to fuck Sauron because she apparently is an all seeing eldritch beast daughter to some kind of cosmic deity or some shit, not so sure about that one. She is also here, giving vague hints and visions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And how to forget Lithariel and Queen Marwen from the first game! Because Shadow of War sure did, with them being sir not appearing in this game, and Queen Marwen being possessed by Saruman for most of her time on screen and Lithariel filling the role of Talion hot blonde warrior princess gallivanting around him as he contemplates whatever or not to fuck with her and Celebrimbor, ever the Pragmatist, reminds him that his wife and son were killed not even a couple weeks ago and he might be a bastard overlord but “MELKOR’S BALLS, TALION, AT LEAST WHEN MY FAMILY WAS KILLED BY SAURON I DIDN’T TRY TO GET MY DICK WET WITH THE FIRST “WILDLING WARRIOR PRINCESS” I FOUND”!
Tumblr media
Also, the “press X to kiss wife” wife of Talion. She also briefly exists before being brutally murdered in order to give Talion a flimsy, easily forgotten motivation to begin his revenge.
You see where I’m going with this?
The female characters of Shadow of War MIGHT, in theory, appear “strong:” They are warriors in a Tolkien setting, everyone loves warrior women in Tolkien setting, right? I mean, this is centuries before Eowyn even came to be, yes, so having the armies of men all about gender equality when their King will one day prefer necromancy over conscripting women, but still, “strong” female characters right?
Eeeee, not really. Their role in the story is minimal (I mean, it has to, The whole point of the game is about the Orks really, the supporting characters are mostly filler at this point), aside maybe from the Blade of Galadriel, who still not only manages to come off as highly unsympathetic after Isildur’s Banishment, but also Drags Down Galadriel with her minor appearances as a highly out of character manipulator and schemer. and Shelob is a spider with boobs and fulfill the classic manipulative woman in a position of power role. Most other female characters are non entities, there either to hint at Talion’s dick getting wet or to give the lord regent of Minas Ithil a excuse to give away the city and the Palantir to the Nazhgul. They are devices to the story of men, who have embraced their role as warrior, yes, but not in a way that truly matters.
So, anyway, the female characters in this series are lackluster.
Tumblr media
At least the first black gondorian in the series is hot a fairly interesting and well written character tho, even if his DLC kinda fucks over the spirit of the game when you play as him (as in, capturing and controlling orks + death and rebirth mechanic, here replaced with hiring mercenaries and a roguelike state of the game but, hey, he has no ring of power or grandpa magpie to use, so it kinda makes sense), and they do sell his brother (a greedy mercenary captain) into slavery at some point, but hey, at least HE wasn’t the spy, I fucking trembled when they said there was a spy in Minas Ithil and a silhouette in shadow was shown, wouldn’t put it past them to make the first Black Gondorian in this series also a bloody traitor.

♥️ ♣️ Send a playing card to my ask box! ♦️ ♠️
// Thank you!! :D @blind-mutant
A♥️ - Who was the first person your muse ever fell in love with?
Maglor. It wasnt really expected, they were so young, about 14 and spent a lot of time together for school, and just because they were good friends. They both were having that realization of “.. i think I like boys too.” at the time, and kinda kept it to themselves aside from maybe one friend. I cant speak for Maglor, but Finrod told his best friend at the time he was having feelings. Mags became his first intense crush. During several months of them working together on a project for music class they kind of played around with subtly flirting or touching shoulders when sitting close, really sweet kinds of things. Just testing the waters to see if the feelings were returned and just because it was such a new feeling.
One day they happen to be sitting really close and looked at each other, then just.. both of them really awkwardly leaned in reallyyyy slow and kissed. They actually kissed, again really awkwardly but really adorable, about three times in a row before Finrod’s mother walked in to say dinner was almost ready. It was a really embarrassing and funny first kiss. His parents are obviously super supportive tho. They dated for about.. a year and 8 months maybe? Around that bc about 5 months into being 15 is when he started getting his mutation little by little and by the time it got to the beginning of 8 months it had gone full fledged and drama happened.
Finrod loved him and thats why he broke up with him, he was a young teen who felt that was the best option. Then he was at the institute for around 7 months when he met Rhys I think, and was 2 like..months into being 16. He moved on with time, it just wasnt meant to be, and being friends with Rhys really and truly made him happy. It felt right and like everything was perfect even if things had happened, they had each other and thats all he realized he wanted. He loves Rhys more than he ever thought he could love anyone. Its a more mature love, rather than a first love. Thats not to say he doesnt love Maglor still, but that type of love changes with time you know? The nature of it.. Rhys is the person he wants to be with, and stay with forever now.
4♥️ - What are your muse’s thoughts on starting/raising a family?
Finrod would LOVE to adopt and raise a family if Rhys wanted to. Children have always been something he imagined having one day. He wants to share that experience with someone he loves, and raise a child together. However, its only something he wants if Rhys wants it.  He never ever EVER wants Rhys to feel like its something they have to have, or like he has to say yes to make Finrod happy. Finrod’s entire world is wonderful with Rhys in it as it is. He doesnt need children to be happy, and if all they ever had was a bunny and a snail he’d be the happiest man in the world still. Which ever they decide one day hes happy with.
7♣️ - Has your muse ever felt “trapped”, either figuratively or literally?
When he first started getting his mutation and realized what was happening he did at first. Mostly because he didnt have a choice in what was happening to him. He was trapped into turning into something, he at the time didnt want. Not to mention something he thought was going to ruin everyones lives including his own. Of course once he learned better and realized it was who he was  meant to be, he would /never/ give up his mutation even if he had the chance. He loves who he is, he wouldnt know what to do without it.
J♣️ - Who does your muse trust the most?
Hmm well he trusts a lot of people and cant just choose one. It depends on the situation presented as to who he would trust with what. In general though, the top people he immediately trusts in ANY situation always is his parents and Rhys. For instance though, his siblings he would trust with his life in serious situations (aside from Galadriel if shes only a toddler just bc shes too little to understand) but not trust his brothers to keep a secret that isnt life or death. Theyre tattletelling 12 year olds haha, theyre gonna tell things sometimes. Finrod does love them dearly tho, just as an older brother he knows better than to trust them with certain things. XD His parents tho are two people he knows, no matter what always have his, his sibling’s, and Rhys’ back too. Theyre good trusting parents, and he knows they would only /ever/ break their promises to them if it was extremely important. The same with Rhys, Finrod knows he can always trust him no matter what the situation and if for some reason Rhys’ breaks a promise or something happens, he knows there HAS to be something extremely important or wrong going on.
2♦️ - How important is money to your muse?
Ehh I feel like this question isnt as simple as it sounds like the last one haha.  It vastly depends on the situation as to how he feels about money. For instance, when he first meets Rhys he doesnt care at all that Rhys doesnt have any money or anything for that matter.  He doesnt place someones worth in relation to their financial status. Which is obvious to anyone who knows him. Even tho Rhys may still feel insecure about that time in his life, which is understandable, its really important to Finrod that he knows, he never ever saw anything wrong with him in any way much less the lack of money and homelessness.
When they meet/become friends/ are at the institute he does start putting more importance into money than before. Previously it was just certain things like, money for a new instrument he had wanted to raise himself rather than his parents spending all that money on him bc they have four kids. Not to mention they had already bought him a guitar among other things.  So he took that summer job at the greenhouse to make that money for something he wanted, and took that job several times so he could help out, and have extra spending money.
When he meets Rhys, I think that value shifts a bit bc he starts saving for someone else. Sure he still does things for himself, he wouldnt want Rhys to think he wasnt, but when you care about someone you take care of them. Suddenly money went from something he could earn to spend on things he wanted to having a value of making someone he cares for comfortable and at home. Obviously he didnt overkill spend money on him left and right, he knows better, but it was the little things like buying Rhys a jacket he didnt have before, giving him essential things he hadnt had like a toothbrush, socks, more clothes, a hairbrush. He wouldnt pile all these things on him at once so as not to overwhelm him, but hes gonna get those things for him. Some before Rhys even comes to live with him at the institute and some in the weeks after he moves in. After that, its little things like a special snack he knows will make him smile at lunch, a textured scrunchie or cuff bracelet or something he thought Rhys might wanna fiddle with on his wrist when nervous or bored and of course use the scrunchie for his hair. Just little sweet gestures that shows he cares. Rhys’ happiness and to see him smile is priceless.
Once they move into their apartment together I think its a little similar but theyre on their own then. The value on money goes higher bc they have to pay rent and buy groceries. Sure, his parents do help them out the first month or so and help them get a decent car but theyre starting a life together. It turns into supporting them, saying bills, saving up, buying groceries, more sweet gestures. All of that he happily does, hes absolutely thrilled that they have a life of their own that hes just enjoying it even if bills arent fun. Its their life together thats fun and always enjoyable bc he has Rhys.
Furthermore, his importance on money isnt just him supporting Rhys, its also Rhys supporting himself. Rhys having freedom to live, being his own person. Having a life and independence thats very much deserved after what hes been through. Rhys getting a job of his own is so so important to Finrod bc he knows what it means to Rhys. So theres just no limit to how important Rhys’ money is bc of its significance. Thats a really long answer haha but its such a good question I hope it makes sense.
7♠️ - What’s a hard truth that your muse has to learn/has learned?
Hmm. Going back to when he had all those angsty moments when he was first getting his mutation. The hard truth of it was accepting who he was and that it was okay. Just because all of this was happening to him doesnt mean he has to give up everything he ever wanted or people he cared for.  He can still live his life and be happy just the way he is.

Hi there! I've been meaning to ask this for awhile now, but I was just wondering what you think Jon's reaction to finding out Daenerys is his aunt will be? I mean, in my mind, it *could* go either way ... he could just not care bc of the whole Targaryens wedding family all the time, but I'm not entirely sure. I've been waiting SO LONG for my ship to sail, and tbh, I really don't care that they're nephew/aunt, but yeah. I just wanted to get your take on it!
In the books, I think that Jon is going to find out about Rhaegar and Lyanna in TWOW, before he meets Daenerys. So I don’t think “Daenerys is my aunt” is the familial relationship he’s immediately going to focus on, although I’m sure he’ll figure that out eventually. I think Jon has to grapple with the fact that Ned isn’t his biological father, along with the fact that his biological father Rhaegar disappeared with his mother Lyanna, who was underage at the time of her disappearance. And then this disappearance ignited a chain of events that caused Jon’s Uncle Brandon’s and his grandfather Rickard’s deaths. Not to mention a war.
Quotin myself:
idk if I would be so quick to dismiss Jon’s feelings. I think the emotional impact is kind of the whole point of the story. GRRM says he’s writing about “the human heart in conflict with itself”. It’s the emotional struggle that we relate to, more so than wielding a magical sword and slaying ice zombies. It’s R+L=J that is going to play a significant part in Jon Refusing the Hero’s Call. Jon has created a fantasy about Ned and his mother, and the pain of having that fantasy ripped away, of finding out he was Rhaegar’s design, a piece of Rhaegar’s prophecy, is gonna be a really big deal to him. Jon has to work through these feelings, and decide to save the world because he chooses to, and not because it’s something on Rhaegar’s survivalist checklist. Rhaegar was doing things because he thought it was required (”it seems i must be a warrior”), because some dusty prophecy said so. Jon’ll do it because it’s right and it’s what he chooses, and his emotional journey is gonna be the whole point of twow/ados.
See also. Also also: #r plus l equals j
So that’s. A lot of stuff for Jon to work through in TWOW.
And I don’t actually think that Dany is arriving in Westeros until near the end of TWOW, and I think that she’s going to be in the King’s Landing / Dragonstone area.
Perhaps Jon will meet her there idk, perhaps not. I personally like the idea of Jon going south trying to find the Tower of Joy and spending 40 days and 40 nights wandering the Dornish desert (I would like to learn more about Dorne), but instead GRRM will probably opt for a metaphorical desert of the heart. Regardless of whether it’s a physical desert or a metaphorical one tho, I think the problem remains the same: the rejection of evil. Instead of Satan appearing to Jesus Jon, it’s indifference and despair that Jon must reject.
To quote Elie Wiesel,
The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it’s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it’s indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it’s indifference. Because of indifference, one dies before one actually dies.
Indifference, to me, is the epitome of evil.
What hurts the victim most is not the cruelty of the oppressor but the silence of the bystander.
This is what I think ASOIAF is all about - having the courage to speak out and oppose what is wrong in the world. (This is why that theory about Tyrion losing his tongue is so heinous.) We see people speaking out when Tyrion stands up for one little girl, in Jon saving wildlings and letting them through the Wall in spite of the bigotry that will get him killed, in Dany freeing slaves, in Sansa speaking on Dontos’s behalf, and the stuff all the other heroes do.
And we see a lot of evil happen in ASOIAF when people stand by and look the other way and do nothing - like the Kingsguard.
(Remember Rhaella. Remember the men of the kingsguard who looked away. Remember Daenerys, who “dare not look away” when people are being raped or mutilated or murdered.)
“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”
Remember the call: “ARE THERE NO TRUE KNIGHTS AMONG YOU?”
“Only silence answered.”
That’s really what I think Jon is going to be dealing with in TWOW - the temptation to sit it out and do nothing as the War of the Five Kings resumes and the Wall falls, and the ice zombies invade.
The temptation to answer all this with silence.
(Like, if you asked me to describe how I think TWOW’s going to be like … I think it’s going to be like that moment in a movie when you’re holding your breath in anticipation and horror.)
I have a tendency to resort to Wheel of Time quotes when I run out of ASOIAF quotes, but I honestly think of these two series as sisters in the epic fantasy genre so anyways. In WOT there’s this prophecy related to the salvation of the world, “The grave is no bar to my call.”
When ADOS asks, “ARE THERE NO TRUE KNIGHTS AMONG YOU?” Zombie!Jon has to choose to answer the call, despite his death, despite everything that happened to him.
So anyways … The temptation to answer all this with silence … while I think Dany’s story is going to parallel Jon’s throughout TWOW, I think the very earliest they’re going to meet is at the very end of TWOW, and maybe not until ADOS.
So by the time Jon actually meets Dany, I think he knows full well who she is, and who he is.
Sidenote - I do not think that Rhaegar and Lyanna got married in the books because
I believe Jon’s story is about coming to terms with who he is, and that includes being a bastard - just not Ned’s bastard.
I do not think GRRM would undermine and sideline Dany’s claim to the Iron Throne like that, when Dany’s story centers around a choice between her people vs her throne. It would make her final sacrifice at the end that much bigger, if it includes the throne that she must give up.
So when Jon and Dany finally meet … I think it’s all going to be very chaotic and desperate.
Also. Jon will be an undead fire zombie in the books, so let’s.
Let’s not forget that.
Because I think that is going to be Very Important.
I would say that death … or zombification … or whatever word you would like to use for the experience of being murdered and resurrected … is going to be a much bigger issue for Jon and Dany’s relationship than simple incest.
I think throughout GRRM’s body of work – not just ASOIAF, but everything – there’s this theme about … about … the boundaries of love, but more importantly, the breakdown of those boundaries that stop us from loving each other. It’s A Song for Lya. It’s the spider loving a human woman in Tower of Ashes. It’s Vincent in Beauty and the Beast.
It’s GRRM saying that love is boundless.
So with Jon and Dany … I’m hesitant to speak here because GRRM has so much left to write … I think that Jon has to realize, with Dany’s help, that death doesn’t stop you from loving.
Think about what Jon’s been through.
He was murdered. Betrayed by his own men.
Murdered because he wouldn’t leave the wildlings to die on the other side of the Wall. Because he let them in, in his love and his compassion for humanity. Murdered because he loved a wildling girl. Murdered because he loved his sister, and he wanted to go save the girl he thought was Arya.
Like, you can get into all the political reasons behind Jon’s assassination, but in the end? I think it was about love. Bigots like Bowen Marsh lack that kind of love.
And Jon died for it.
I think Bran’s AGOT vision is a metaphor for Jon in TWOW: “Jon sleeping alone in a cold bed, his skin growing pale and hard as the memory of all warmth fled from him.”
Warmth is love.
Remember, “The real enemy is the cold.” The cold is slavery, abuse, murder, cruelty. The cold is all the ways that people hurt each other. The cold is indifference, despair. The cold is the absence of hope. The cold is death, dehumanization.
So in TWOW, I think Jon’s going to have a lot of problems letting people in.
I think Undead Jon rejects love. I don’t think he’ll remember what it is, and that’s what will make him initially reject his savior role. That’s why he’ll initially be indifferent to humanity’s fate. Zombie!Jon just can’t find it in him to care anymore imo.
You can’t step up and save humanity if you don’t love humanity.
I think Dany has to warm Jon up, so to speak.
Because humanity is fire (life) and the Others and their army of the Undead are ice, and the song of ice and fire is the war between humanity and the Others. With Jon zombified and, worse, indifferent … refusing the call … he’s an (unwitting) agent of the Others, and Dany has to save him. I mean, Dany has to save everyone, but she has to save Jon first. She has to make him remember what it means to be human.**
Like, Mel is going to bring Jon back pretty quickly imo, but … what is life worth, “when all the rest is gone?” Being back isn’t enough. Dany’s going to make Jon live again, as she never could for Drogo. (That’s gonna be a nice bookend, @GRRM, if we ever get to read it.)
Like, ASOIAF is about second chances. Samwell failed to release the ravens on time in ACOK, but you can bet he’s gonna release them on time when it really counts. Dany couldn’t make her Sun and Stars live again in his undead state … but you can bet your ass she’s gonna make Jon Snow live again.
I don’t know exactly how that’s going to happen, but I really, really, really don’t think Jon and Dany bang until they’re beyond the curtain of light, in the Other World Faerie Realm Lovecraftian Parallel Universe of Nightmare and Death.
If Westeros has a version of Adam and Eve, two people alone and in love at the birth of the world … well, I imagine Jon and Dany as the inverse, two people alone “at the end of all things”.
Imagine Belle’s magic mirror, Galadriel’s basin of water, Saruman’s palantir … the Sony JumboTron … whatever far-seeing device the Others can use to demoralize Our Heroes … imagine Jon and Dany watching all the dead and dying as Winterfell’s outer curtainwall falls. Imagine them watching when … I don’t know … someone in a critical defensive position betrays them. Imagine Grey Worm dying. Imagine idk horrible things. Disheartening things. Imagine Our Heroes losing heart. (The human heart in conflict with itself!)
(I think the Others are smart and I think they understand psychological warfare. Look how they play with people.)
Jon: “I am glad you are here with me, Dany. Here at the end of all things.”
Not a happy conversation, maybe, but a human one. Both of us needed someone, and we reached out. […I] made love to her as fiercely as I could. Then, the darkness softened, we held each other and [pushed] away the night.
–Dreamsongs
Did it matter to Adam, that Eve was born of his rib? That’s why this issue with incest is so irrelevant to me when it comes to Jon and Dany - I think the circumstances are going to be so weird, so wild, they’ll make that fish-fucking movie look normal.
Jon is a zombie. They’re going to be in a Lovecraftian Universe. It’s the end of the world. Dany and Jon being related is not going to matter.
In this Other World, this alien Lovecraftian dimension, I think Jon and Dany are the only two humans in this whole Other universe (with the possible exception of Tyrion, but Tyrion’s really a wildcard, more morally ambiguous than either Jon or Dany imo and therefore much more difficult to predict).
And so Jon and Dany reach out to each other – they have sex – as a celebration of their humanity, an act of defiance against an alien species that wants to destroy humanity.
And this act revitalizes them, gives them their second wind … and they can go do … whatever it is they need to do … to defeat the Others.
Love, life, salvation … there’s so much bigger stuff at stake here than “She’s my aunt”.
So no, I don’t think it will matter to Jon.
I have more Jon/Dany thoughts here, if you like: #jdmeta
-
**When Aemon gives Jon that “Kill the boy” speech, I think the mistake Jon makes is that he thinks he must kill his humanity. He pushes his friends away, he becomes isolated, he heartlessly steals Gilly’s baby. It’s cold and cruel … almost Tywin-esque. And I joke about Tywin being a golden cyborg, but that’s what toxic masculinity is … it’s a denial of humanity. I think Dany will have to help Jon remember what it’s like to be human.

Interview Meme
[So I checked our email last night, but also had an epiphany about being able to see tumblr notifications on the “activity” page (I’ve never needed to do that on my personal blog) -- I found like 3 memes waiting! XD Thanks for tagging us, memers. Dani’s been crazy-busy/generally busier than me, but here is me answering on my own behalf~]
11 questions - Answer 11, create a new set of 11 for people to answer. (Zzz not tonight)
Questions from @oolathurman:
1. If you were in the zombie apocalypse and you HAD to work with other survivors, what would your ideal position in the group be? For example: the leader, the muscle, the medic, etc.
Lord help me. . . I need my meds so I’m doomed. :p Hierarchy-wise, though, I thrive as a Second-in-Command supporter/people-coordinator. I think. And according to my zombie survivalist pals my valued talent is gardening.
2. If you were going to be in a movie, what sort of genre of movie would you want to be in?
Fantasy. ANIMATED fantasy. MAGICAL GIRL ANIME FANTASY. -- When Lord of the Rings was released I was in highschool & used to fantasize about being an elf (possibly Galadriel).
3. What color would your lightsaber be and why? (rainbow/etc counts)
Purple! Because it’s my favorite. I’m that person who would outfit my entire house from www.thepurplestore.com if I could.
4. If you found out you had the Force and somehow immediately knew exactly how to master such a skill, what would be the first fun thing you do?
Jump up on the roof. Heck yeah.
5. Who is one character, in any form of media, that you always find yourself going back to think about? Who is it that you admire?
Ohh, tough. If I just stick to Star Wars, I’ll say Ahsoka. I don’t have to tell any of /you/ that Clone Wars was an amazing show. ;p Then I had an Edge of the Empire RP character who fervently hero-worshipped her as rebel inspiration, so that mmmaaybe rubbed off on me. (Tho Satine might have been my fav character in that show, I don’t often remember she exists because Leia & Padme eclipse her in a general sense)
6. How many pillows and/or stuffed animals do you have on your bed?
One pillow, one plush bunny from Dani to hug. <3
7. Regardless of the character’s moral compass, who did you always think looked the most badass and that you’d totally dress up as for halloween?
I’ve always wanted to dress as Princess Zelda. Or Link. Who are the GOODEST, most moral kind of badasses so that’s fine.
8. If you could just immediately know one language (or one dialect of a language, if it has multiple dialects), what would it be?
It’d be one of the forms of Chinese (after doin’ more research to fully decide). True fluency in French would be useful here in Canada (I know SOME), but I’d rather cheat my way to the most-spoken and very-challenging-to-learn language (which is very different from English). I’d appreciate the number of films I could suddenly understand.
9. Who’s in your favorite rarepair? (can be romantic/platonic/etc)
Well. As rare as I can think of: one time Dani stated that Vowrawn would strike up a relationship with Talos (who is MORE THAN FORTY YEARS OLD I don’t care what the SWTORpedia profile has to say). I am on-board for that charming gay concept.
10. What is one trait that you find that a lot of your characters have in common? (eg, courageous, stubbornness, etc)
I guess MOST of them are decisive/confident, actually. If I play-act with their attitude in mind, then I can fake away some of my social anxiety interacting with people in a Tabletop or an MMO. That quality applies to all but one of my SWTOR alts! Jedi knight, smuggler, commando, warrior, (planned) inquisitor, agent -- everyone except my consular, Arameis. He is the reverse: constantly dwells in self-doubt. Has zero self-esteem/regard for himself. I, uh, more-or-less invented him to express some personal feelings in early highschool -- then turned him into the goodest, most moral paladin, and fell in love with the charm of the combination. Incidentally, Dani and I name Link after him in our playthru of Zelda games. :)
11. If you had to pick one song from before the year 2000, what would it be?
. . . . . Prior to 2000 I knew only movie songs/musicals and the album Up by Great Big Sea. Which IS a good album my dad had but like-- my Christian parents just weren’t pop music fans and my older brother was almost no help either (although he did bring us Coldplay) and I had no friends!!!!!!!!! :))))))  *wipes sweat* Uh, so. OH I know-! Here’s one right on the millennium border which obsessed me completely. The opening theme for “the 1999 animated series”, Cybersix:
