this has ended up as more of.. a pam analysis than a fix-it, but they tie in together at the "ANYWAY" so if you're looking for that, just skip to it :)

(there's more under this cut because it'll be long, but if you can't access it for any reason i'll be more than happy to message it to you. please also keep in mind that this is a LOT of pam apologism)

OKAY SO! it really all hinges on pam as a character and her development throughout the series and how that contrasts or goes along with the way that it works with other characters in the series. she’s a very complex character (something that doesn’t really need to be said; it’s pointed out in the show as well) and i find her arc incredibly interesting, especially because she is not... not a witch at the end of season 5 when she finally ends up being a semi-good guy.

pam is one of the oldest characters in the series both in age and in how long she's lasted as a character, just going off the fact that she was (a) around since the chili wars, (b) old enough to have a nephew ~about~ 20 years younger than her around the time of the time of the future, and (c) old enough for papa crab to recognize her from his vision of the crab joust.

this leaves a lot of space for her improvement! especially with the fact that we canonically have two timelines (the one where pam wins and the future happens, and the one where the joust is stopped). because we don't know that much about her life before she started serving the dark master, so i think... it kind of hinges on her involvement. we've never had the hotdaga without pam. even when she died, she turned around and became a ghost so she would still be around.

i think that, with the way she and mike acted around each other during the last few episodes of season five, there was a little more history there. this is where we get into my headcanon that mike and pam were actually friends after the time of the chili wars but before she found the dark master.

mike knows her. he's seen her at the wedding and knows about her involvement in the larger plot from gene and maizey (assuming they told him, which i think they did) but he doesn't hold any resentment? usually he's the first person to get up and go "hey, what you're doing is fucked up and i'm not happy with it."

obviously, since he never interacts with goondis on-screen before season five, it's a big hard to get a handle on his behaviour around old friends, but he doesn't seem to be... a fairly forgiving person.

this leads into how pam is... not really a bad person throughout the hotdaga. for sure, she does many, many bad things over the course of the series, but she is not... bad. she merely seems to be desensitized to violence.

combine that with the fact that many--if not all--the main characters in the hotdaga are fairly morally grey, you have a good setup for an interesting story.

ANYWAY. pam goes back in time with maizey on the minestrone to herself on the outer edge of the galaxy, meeting one of the other characters for the first time, but in the landing they were separated from the minestrone and need to get back without anyone noticing that they're around. this is... hard however, because there aren't a lot of people around but it is incredibly quiet and any movement is echoed around the small town and the scrap metal it's made of.

the minestrone is quite beat up from losing mike and goondis, and tired from the whole journey, so she misses again, and ends up going back and forth through pam's life up until the actual wedding. reflecting on her... what she stood for and stands for currently, the nothingness that could be the future, etc.

i DO have OCs!!!! my seven darling children!!! and for asking about them i thank you immensely. i do warn you this is very long because i love talking about them, mainly the first three but yeah. anyway you’ve been warned. this is longgggg.

and yes i’ve been working on the post for a while because, well, you ask a proud mother about her children, she’s gonna go buck wild.

alright, here we go:

So these guys are, essentially, batb 2017 universe next gen. But the work I plan to have them in will be it’s own thing. Basically, these first three ocs (way more developed than the other four) started out as Adam and Belle’s little children, but have grown to entirely being their own people. So, here they are!

Renée

Their first child, heir to the throne, darling Renée! Her full name is Renée Genevieve Annalise (I have a whole post about the reason behind the kids’ names, that’s here). In terms of looks, she’s a great deal like Belle, particularly her brown eyes and freckles, but has lighter hair. She’s very stubborn (wonder where she got that from!) and needs things to be a very proper way. She’s protective of her two younger siblings, SO protective of them that she can be over-bearing sometimes, but her heart’s in the right place. She’s short, like 5’2 at her tallest, and she’s shortest in the family and her brother gives her crap about it all the time <3 She focuses a great deal on her studies and getting prepared for the throne one day; Adam was quite adamant (no pun intended) about making sure she was ready, since his father hardly did anything for him. She’s WAY too hard on herself. My goodness, girl!! She’s a star, really, she does amazing. But it’s never enough for her and it makes her doubt herself quite often. This is a little ficlet about that, (but don’t read til you get through at least to her brother, haha). As a child, she was insanely adventurous and out spoken and so much like Belle. So SO rambunctious. But as she aged she became only a little more reserved, prim and proper like her father, though she still loves playing outside with her siblings and she loves riding horses more than the lot of them. She’s quite good at the piano, and she can sing but she doesn’t sing very often. She’s got a lot to go through still yet in her young life, but she’s a sweetheart and since the moment she was born, Belle and Adam couldn’t be more proud of her.

Juliette

Ahh, an angel! Juliette Adrienne Maria, Belle and Adam’s second daughter and Renée’s little sister only by two years. She has dark hair like her mother, though in looks she favors Adam a bit more, particularly his mother. She has green eyes (like her grandfather Maurice!), she’s about 5’7 when all done growing, just a bit taller than Belle, and she’s truly just the sweetest. When they were little, while Renée was running about, talking to every footman and maid and guest she could see, Juliette was quietly standing beside her Mama or Papa’s leg, hiding behind Belle’s dress or Adam’s coattail, averting eye contact at all costs. She’s quite like Adam, he was this way as a child too. She loves being outside but she’s far more worrisome, and she’ll never stray as far as her sister wants to go. As she grows older, she becomes the insane book worm that her mother still is. They all read (a family of bookworms, if you will) but Juliette takes the cake. She enjoys studying, she loves looking at maps and globes and translating things and reading about anything and everything she can get her hands on (which is a lot, she is a princess after all). She’s an exceptional violinist, Chapeau taught her himself. Her ideal happy place is out in the field, playing some sweet melody and just vibing on her own. She’s gentle and kind, though she never thinks enough of herself. She always puts others’ needs before her own, especially her brother and sister’s. She’s certainly the peacemaker of her family, and they’re all the better for it.

Maurice

Oooooh boy. My son. Maurice Jean Adam, Belle and Adam’s third child and only son. He’s quite obviously named after his grandfather, which melted the old man’s heart to no end, as you can imagine. Maurice is a chaotic child and I love him So Much. He’s mischievous, he’s curious, he’s adventurous, he’s all over the place!! He’s seven years younger than Renée, and five years younger than Juliette, so he’s doing his own thing for a good amount of the time. In terms of looks, he looks JUST like Adam, blond hair and blue eyes and that same sweet smile. He does have his mother’s freckles, he’s actually the most freckle-y of the kiddos, and fully grown he’s 6’2, just a bit taller than his Papa (and his Papa hates it sndkjskdj). Despite his chaos and high energy, he’s a sweetheart and a big softie. He loves his family SO much and loves hanging out with (bothering) his sisters a great deal. He does enjoy reading, but prefers to spend his time getting up to mayhem; pranking his sisters, Cogsworth, Papa; or just vibing around the castle. This boy runs on Vibes. He has a pet tortoiseshell cat named Athena, who is just as much of a scoundrel as he his, but she’s a good baby (to him, and sometimes Juliette and Belle. Athena does NOT vibe with Renée and Adam cuz they’re so FUSSY. but anyway.) Maurice may be the youngest but he’ll defend his family to the ends of the earth, at any cost, and he’s by far the most no-thoughts-head-empty brave out of all of them (he gets it from his Mama <3). He’s quite sociable and certainly a flirt; he knows how all the young maidens see him. But deep down he’s still a sweet and genuine boy, and he’s not just going to give his heart to anyone.

So, if you made it this far, congrats. You’re a champion. These next four are far less developed than the kiddos. Mainly because the kiddos’ PARENTS are my otp, which is probably quite obvious, so I just devote a lot of time to that family. And they’re the main characters of my story anyway. but I still love these other babes!!! !!!!!

Additionally, these next two are, loosely, Lumiere and Plumette’s sons. Very loosely, as I do not spend much time at all focusing on plumiere (though I love them) so I can’t speak much on traits or anything like that. The main point here is these two were raised as footmen in the castle and because of their parents’ closeness with the king and queen (adelle-plumiere iconic couple duo) they grew up with Renée, Juliette, and Maurice!

Sebastian

Dearest Sebastian... literal sunshine. He’s such a soft and kind boy!!! He’s just the sweetest, and he’s also a HUGE nerd. He’s set out to read Every book in the library. Which is insane, he couldn’t possibly. right? RIGHT? but boy is he gonna try!! He’s kind and gentle, and worries about his little brother and always makes sure he gets back to their quarters at night. He has those cool round glasses, like Harry Potter glasses but a gold rim. He’s like 5’10 at his tallest. He has a few freckles around his eyes and sweet curly dark hair. Also he gives the BEST hugs. So Warm. He’s grown up with all the royal kiddos, as aforementioned, but he and Juliette have always been best friends. They have a quiet, gentle understanding that grows into something deeper and more lovely as they get older, one day finding each other amidst all the worries and sunshine and countless countless books... Dearest Sebastian :)

Xavier

Oh my dear Xavier! He’s Sebastian’s younger brother by three-four years. At his tallest he’s like 5’11. He keeps his hair prettyyy short but every now and then he lets his curls grow out a bit and it’s stunning! He’s Maurice’s best friend!! They get up to constant mischief together. Maurice is always pushing the limits, and Xavier is doing everything he can to keep the prince out of serious trouble, while definitely enjoying the trouble all too much. At heart, he’s an actor, an entertainer (pretty much the only note of Lumiere being his father, haha). He loves singing and dancing and he just NEVER stops moving!! Always talking with his hands and being so smiley!

Maximilian

Max! This man! Who is he!! He’s like 6’4, so jot that down. Bright green eyes. Jet black hair. He’s in the Royal Guard, which is how he meets everyone. Particularly how he meets Princess Renée >:) And how they proceed to have a great enemies to lovers like you’ve never seen! Anyway, he’s very stoic. Resting Grumpy Face. But he’s a softie once he opens up to you (and even softer when you get some liquor in him, lmao). Oh! He has six brothers! I think he’s... number five? In age order? Something like that. There were actually eight of them but the brother right after Max in age died when they were kids. Haha I hope that doesn’t traumatize him in any way… ANYWAY, all of the brothers went into some branch of the military in their adulthood except two. I’ve named them all but that’s for another time. Gosh, Max is great but that’s all I have for him!! (honestly if anyone has read this far I am simply amazed.)

Eloise

ELOISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This queen? This angel? This iconic woman???? Okay so, opposite of Max’s big family, she just grew up her and her Mama. Papa was there when she was young but died. It’s been her and her Mama for a while and they’re very protective of each other. She has black hair and brown eyes. Her family is Korean but she’s grown up here since she was born. She’s around 5’6 at her tallest. She LOVES being outside, she works in the horse stables at the castle and she couldn’t be happier about it. She loves animals a lot, but she’s kind of a horse whisperer. She’s just really outdoorsy and loves working with her hands. She gets tangled up with Maurice and Xavier’s shenanigans. Should she develop a crush on the prince? Oh dear me, did I say that out loud?? Gosh, she fell for that flirty, outspoken, annoying prince?? What maiden hasn’t??? Ugh!! There’s no way he also has a crush on her too, right? hahah. Anyway, back to Eloise. She’s a sweetie but she won’t take any of your shit!! She doesn’t do anything she doesn’t want to and she will absolutely let you know it. She always speaks her mind (even when she really should probably shut up) and she’s never anything less than her true self, which proves quite challenging sometimes. But she’s excellent and so badass and usually the only braincell when she hangs with Xavier and Maurice (someone’s gotta keep those boys in line!). But all in all, we love her and she’s a baller and she’ll throw hands if you cross her!!

How do you write smut and not make it sound cringy? As a virgin who has never partaken in sex, what. the. fuck.

Your writing is a godsend btw <3

This is such a good question, first off, thank you for asking me of all people!

Smut is tricky, and you will always feel that what you write is cringe. every single time i write smut i worry i’ve done it wrong. And lack of real life experience can be daunting. Please remember that everything gets better with practise: for me, i’ve dabbled in erotica and romantic scenes for a lot longer than a twenty year old writer should have experience for, that is to say i had wattpad when i was 13.

everything is below the cut because this got longgggg

1. description. talk about the room around your characters: is it cramped, spacious? what does the couch feel like? what are they wearing and how quickly can they take it off? if their relationship is friendly before the scene, there might be nerves: describe them. If they hate each other, describe the adrenaline, the self-hatred for sleeping with that particular person. Look at things like breathing pace, body temperature, talk about the way the characters’ skin feels. are their hands calloused? Small and dainty? Talk about the way they move from one point to another: most people kissing tend to stumble a whole bunch. if you’re focused on making out, you aren’t thinking about your feet.

onto more graphic stuff. sweat, the nipping on skin when someone gives you a hickey, the electricity that passes through you when someone’s hands touch more sensitive areas of the skin. whispering seductively into someone’s ear, building the tension with verbal foreplay or actual foreplay.

2. the timing. sex scenes have a cookie cutter layout: a and b make out, a and b have sex in x y or z way, and they both get to finish by the end (unless you’re writing comedy, where you might find a male partner finishing very quickly). The average length of time sex takes in real life is between 5-40 minutes, for both partners to come. If you are doing a short, hide in a closet and fuck sort of scene, it will be short. Your descriptions are important still, but they should match the length of the scene. If it’s 40 minutes and multiple orgasms for a lady, it will be more drawn out, so so too with description. i am always aware of my timing when i write: i don’t feel comfortable writing longer sex scenes like other writers, so i stick to a timing in my head of between 10-25 minutes. you can cater to your own needs: readers don’t see the process of why you chose a short sex scene over a longer one.

3. words to use. the language of smut is weird to navigate. some terms are so outdated reading them hurts. again, take the scene you have and work with it. more common slang like cock, dick, cunt, pussy, all work in the right context. direct language like this works best in scenes that have pace, whether it be a manic stripping off of clothes in anger, or a quickie in the shower. there’s aggression in some of the words that matches the enemies to lovers tone: cunt especially gives off a much more male-domineering vibe to a situation, unless you reverse expectations.

on the other hand, words like shaft and member, pearl or bud (for describing the clit), they have a much softer read to them. slower scenes work well with softer language, and i’ve often found it easier to focus on emotion and feeling in these scenes. for penetrative sex, you don’t really talk about the vagina so much as what sensations occur upon penetration. softer language works for that softer feel.

if you want sweet sex, talk about feelings (emotional, physical); if you want rougher sex, talk about other senses (what kisses taste like, the smell of sweat in the air, hearing grunts and moans, seeing your partner’s body), focus on more primal ideas.

4. rolling waves of pleasure. I absolutely despise describing cumming, and finishing off the sex scene in general, because in real life there’s an awkwardness to it. unless you’ve been with the same partner for years, there’s going to be some cringe there. but as an author, you can eliminate it: change the silence to revelation. but cumming in general is hard to write. the language for it always feels weird, especially for girls cumming, because no one has really figured out what that sensation is. we only compare it to other ideas. rolling waves of pleasure is the most common phrasing of a woman cumming: it is overused, but it is effective.

There’s plenty of other phrases you can use: talking about building pressure or heat in the abdomen, the neediness that sets in when you are right on the edge, and finally relief of it when you do cum. this goes for girls and guys. you’ll find movement needs to seize when one partner cums, at least for a moment. women can have multiple orgasms during sex, with proper stimulation, but men realistically cum once ‘per round’. in short, men (and when i say men i am using it as a more common umbrella term for people with penises, obviously this isn’t always the case) have a longer recharge time. sex usually finishes, or takes a break, after the man has cum. their body will lose a level of control (usually best put as ‘movements becoming sloppy’), and they will thrust harder a few times before ejaculating, in the case of vaginal or anal sex when he finishes still inside a woman (again, woman is an umbrella term). finishing outside most likely involves using their hand to finish themselves.

which brings me to

5. oral is good. oral sex (hand to genital, mouth to genital) is so useful in sex scenes. in longer scenes, it will play a big part in setting the tone of the upcoming sex, in shorter scenes it can be the main event. there’s levels of experience that come from eating a girl out or giving blowjobs: there’s a level of skill in fingering someone to completion, or giving a handjob. clitoral stimulation is so important too: there’s a good percentage of women who won’t get off on penetration alone, so use that bundle of nerves generously.

and again, descriptors here matter on situation. it’s good to include lube or spit in the mix with oral, nobody wants a dry handy. in the case of penises, pleasure in variations on a repetitive process (added flares of blowjobs include spontaneous moves of the tongue, including the hand to some degree, teasing the tip of the shaft). for vaginas, there’s a lot more to work with (fingering and eating out at the same time, tongue, the clit cannot be overstated here). i always have some hesitation writing oral, and i think a lot of writers can feel that. why drag out the possible cringe even longer? but oral is foreplay, foreplay is important. if you’re going to bypass it, make a point of it: have a character insist on the ‘‘main event’ because of need, of time, of excitement.

6. you are going to feel cringe anyway + final tips. smut is always going to be a little weird to write. accept it now. but the thing is, even cringe smut is enjoyable. what i’ve offered is only my advice on this, from my point of view as to what makes decent smut. you could try some of this and realise it doesn’t work for you or your writing style, that’s ok. the best way to learning to write smut is a) practising and b) reading smut! pick up on phrases other authors use that you like, rewrite scenes in different locations, with different actions.

when i say use protection, do it. whether it’s contraception in the form of the pill or jag or patch or whatever, or a condom, promoting healthy sexual habits is never a bad thing. unless you got characters trying to actively get pregnant, or they live in some reality where contraception isn’t a thing/because female repression was everywhere until like 50 years ago and even then we sort of suck at letting women be free to have sex yada yada, protection is going to be used. and the pull out method is not protection, let’s not pretend it is. get that male love interest putting on a condom, get your lady lead (again, generalisation to the max) on some birth control, and let them have at it (note: condoms on after oral). if it’s a same sex sex scene, please remember that condoms are still definitely a good idea for two men if there’s penetration (obviously two women is a completely different story).

finally, don’t be mean to yourself. my most read story right now contains smut i’m not particularly in love with, but it was an attempt and people appreciate you even trying. writing good smut is not easy: and while us writers tend to hold ourselves to impossible standards, you really need to let them go with smut writing. it’s a try and fail process, it’s much more about learning what works for your writing than the act you’re putting on the page. you’ll fuck up more than once; you will succeed much more than you think you will. genuinely, just give it your best shot.

Ok so driving with the windows down and blasting music is good with everyone, I think we would playing all music lol , country for Brigid and Kirby? I think you like country? Ok so we have decided that kesh is the most responsible on the trip which I totally agree with, somebody’s gotta keep us in check. Cozzy is apparently still sleeping, boy must be tired from all those nhl games hehe. Lmao sending Kirby with us, and you yeeling at Dylan not to buy a tv😂. We would so chaotic in the grocery store, like riding in the shopping cart, but also everybody’s racing to get their food, which would be majority of junk food hehe. Honestly we would buy so much food we are literally on a vacay with hockey players who eat a lot haha. The cash register would be shocked. Awww kesh, you being like “kirbs I didn’t even give you that many directions” but him being totally clueless and just trying to kiss you. him being “hmmmm but we didn’t get a tv, and we got some carrots and veggies” lmao I love that kesh please keep writing those.

Haha you got it right, I would be so confused, like how did we get so much food ?! Brigid, you did go overboard but I love it and we will eat our candy :) Dylan bring a ps5 is the funniest shit ever. Food discussion: yes to all of those candies, all dressed ruffles are delish so imma throw in a few bags. Dark chocolate is a must, hehe we should buy fruit and veggies. I don’t think I last that long with junk food hehe. Oo yess we are go a get an Nanaimo bars and poutine :) ooo and BEAVER TAILS . Those are sooo good. I can buy for everybody, esp quinner so that we can recreated that gif of him eating one.

Haha yes, Ryan and I will be there with the non stop chirps. We love them, but still you and Dylan getting 🥵 is 🤌. Hehe yes I mean Dylan h is gorg as well so quinner better work quick lol. Ooo brigid is feeling up some muscles, we love that. But also yes to the straddling and being soft w Jamie. Kesh they are a blushing mess, because they wanna be with Brigid all the time. We are absolutely recreating those wakeboarding lake pics, we have to witness that again- esp you brigid w Dylannnnn. We love some sunscreen and aloe vera.

okkkk so i’m finally home from school and practice now so i’m ready to respond. i’m taking notes from kesh and adding a keep reading bc this is gonna be longgggg so be warned to anyone reading this

haha yes i’m keeping quinton up front with me bc i don’t want him to jump out of the car lmao. i’m not going to subject him to the possible sexual tension that would be going on in the car if dyl or jamie were in the front. like if one of them were in the front they would just start touching my thigh or something knowing the other one could see it but couldn’t do anything about it. and then i would get distracted from driving and we wouldn’t win lol. so i’m making jamie and dyl sit in the back so they mostly dyl can just yell at me to drive faster so that we win. and then i’ll just chill and talk to quinton bc i want to annoy the other two lol

haha don’t worry, me and dyl (and jamie and quinton) will dominate once again. like you guys might drive fast, but i can guarantee i drive faster. especially if dyl is yelling at me to go faster lol. haha but yes you’ll definitely have a better chance if you banish ryan to the back so he can’t distract you. so you let quinner sit in the front with you and hold your hand 🥺 but as soon as he tries to put it anywhere else you banish him to the back so you don’t get distracted lol. but we would definitely have to make a bunch of stops for the boys bc they’re back in canada

haha yes dyl and jamie try, they really do, but they can not seem to get the whole braiding thing down. and then it ends up in a huge knot and ofc ryan just laughs at my misfortune and takes pics of my hair to post on his story. haha and i’d pretend to be soooo mad at them, and i can be scary when i’m mad so they’d be freaking out and just giving me puppy eyes and being like i’m sorry i’ll make it up to you. but then eventually i can’t keep up the act anymore and just start dying of laughter and then they would be annoyed bc they were freaking out lol. but then we have to stop so that our hair can be fixed.

yes lexi finally gets to actually have an extended convo with dylan, when they’re not trying to annoy everyone who’s actually trying ofc. but then you notice him getting jealous of me with jamie, so you chirp him at first but then he’s getting really annoyed. so then you have to be like calm down, let them have their moment, you’ve have plenty lol. she likes both of you, you know

haha yes we def need a girls day where we’re not being chaotic for once lol. and then we get a lot of cute clothes and stuff. and then when we get back the guys make us model all of it for them lol. and all of them are in awe. like kirby and quinner are just like 😍😍 about you guys bc they think you’re so cute. but then also they love our clubbing clothes and are getting super handsy when we go lol. but then after clubbing we just steal their clothes and live in them for most of the rest of the vacation and they pretend to be annoyed, but they secretly don’t mind bc they think it’s hot when we wear their clothes, esp if it has their name

Well I’ve just finished TND chp 3 (I binge read all the chps just now after breakfast) and holy shit…I feel like I want to say something more of substance but I don’t feel equipped to, other than “wow?!” I’ve read another story of yours centered around Hyuck a while ago and Idk how you keep crafting these whole worlds but it’s awesome. I thought I was being paranoid about the Ten thing or the eye symbol thing on the uniforms when they got out of their trucks / my first nightmare there, and I’ve felt sus about the pills (which I wonder if anyone else has gotten?? It wasn’t mentioned. OR OR OR.…what if we DID all get them but they’re simply pLACEBOS and these are things would could do all along we just needed to “believe” we could do it. HMMMM 🔍👀) so I was on the fence but as I read on I now know it’s not in my head lol, pun unintended. When I noticed the similarity in schedule I thought “maybe it’s just structure, like we have at school or daycare” but 😐 The end of chp 3 hurt me. I’d had that looming bad feeling & sometimes in literature when a character makes eye contact with someone for too long in certain contexts it just feels like it’s somehow an unplanned but resolute goodbye and now… 😣Idk what to think, like that they pulled a him, on he himself and realized the jig may be up sooner than planned. I’m also paranoid that it was PLANNED for me to have been able to find what I found like a “Don’t even think* about trying anything slick, or you know what’s next” kind of way? Since of course only I would be able (other than 🐹) to get into a room I wasn’t “supposed” to go into anyway🤔 i wonder if our rooms are mic’ed? Tbh the whole time 🐰 talks to me I’m surprised he doesn’t just tell me it in my head in case there’s an eavesdropper about somewhere. I wonder if that’ll be our doom (I wanted to say “don’t these kids know technology is EVERYwhere these days?!!” until I remembered that no, no they do not. That’s,,,, the point of the characters escaping living a lie🤡 lol my Some with Jeno is so cute btw!!! ALSO, it isn’t lost on me that we probably never got our bookbags with our emergency provisions back🤔 It may be because I’m super vigilant (tense paranoid and anxious tbf) irl but I want their bags back! Cus if we needed to escape suddenly we would need the contents. This is all a jumbled mess of my rushed typing and rambling thoughts but one thing is clear. It’s all a plan. #StayWokeMyFriends 👁

omggg thank you so much for reading TND and i'm so glad you're enjoying it so far!!! ahhhh you also read post mortem? thank you so much for loving the worlds i make, i absolutely love writing my series and creating these alternate universes so hearing how much you enjoy them to literally makes me so happy. literally some of the best things to hear as an author is the reader's ideas on what's going to happen next as well!! like hearing about their views on things so far and then what they think/hope will happen. also when people bring up things that they want to see, i sometimes get really inspired by the things they mention and add scenes that are similar to that.

some of your questions will be answered in the next chapter (along with a lot of unknowns and confusion will be cleared up) but i can tell you that yes all the other members got a radiation pill as well and they all decided to take it. ooooh placebo, that's a really interesting idea! however, i can confirm (it will be mentioned in the next chapter but it's not a spoiler so i'll say it here) that the pills are... *insert drum roll* really radiation pills! these are something that the facility were telling the truth about and they do enhance their abilities. since their abilities were born from radiation exposure, it gives them extra strength. i really wanted to play around with the eye symbol as well, something that creates a link to the lab that i could reiterate in later chapters. the only problem was, i came up with that idea during chapter two, hence the flashback scene lmao.

i had the ending of chapter 3 planned for so longgggg. literally that scene was one of the first one i wrote, and then i edited it when i got around to finishing the story so that it linked well to the previous scene. but things like the door, and the rooms possibly being mic'ed will be revealed in later chapters!!! i'm afraid i can't be saying that here so, you're going to have to wait and see why things panned out the way they did.

and omg the bags!!! i almost forgot about those, i'll add them into my list of details to remember (i keep a page of notes of things that i've mentioned or the characters have gone through, it also doubles as my plan for the next chapters, but it helps with continuity) and who knows.... maybe we'll see them again.

I was tagged by @hardworkingprocrastinator aka @rupru-russiaxprussia whom I do believe I ranted with about the Imperial Pair ship, and the unexpected potential of Si Yang x Qi Ying… so thanking you kindly for another excuse to rave about ChinaPuri… sooo uhhh time for some fun times!!

Warning: I have not watched or read the original manga/anime soooooo I’m in an even smaller subset of the fandom babeyyyy!!! It has also been a couple months since I watched the show, so there is a strong chance I’ll have forgotten names and situations, and just general thoughts I have... BUT WHATEVER time to rant to the thirteen people who’ve watched ChinaPuri!!!

1. Favorite character(s)?

MU SI YANG BABEYYYYY!!! I already love a stoic glasses boi, but Mu Si Yang (again not TeniPuri Tezuka, just ChinaPuri Si Yang) may be one of my favourite takes on the stoic glasses boi… like I don’t often enjoy live action versions of anime, especially because the acting is never the best (and granted this one too, had some okay performances) but the guy who plays Mu Si Yang melted my heart… he was the stony-faced serious captain, who could deliver a subtle joke that left you snickering… but he was also the determined, earnest, crazy talented leader with his own hidden struggles who just wanted to take his team and friends as far as they go into competition… which is an essential part of any good sports drama… and he captured it so perfectly… and I love him.. he’s so beautiful too… I would fall in love with him in a heartbeat, and I don’t often say that about characters (like I love them but never in love ya dig?)

Zhou Zhi was a close favourite…basically I just love the two genius senpais…

2. Favorite school team(s)?

Oh god… Yu Feng maybe? We spend the most time with them, they have the most screen time of all the other teams…we have a whole training arc where they’re continuously winning against the struggling to evolve Yu Qing…very reminiscent of the Karasuno-Nekoma rivalry in that they help each other get better… I would’ve loved to see the rivalry/camaraderie develop even more so that when Si Yang leaves, the relief at having this network of tennis friends would’ve been that much more powerful…

Also I really enjoy Xu Ziping’s hustle… I love the story of Yu Feng…they had a shitty coach and had to make a deal to keep winning in order to even remain an official team… and when Yu Qing faced Yu Feng, I really couldn’t tell who I wanted to root for because I knew there was real weight behind every loss for Yu Feng…

After that, maybe No. 6… they’re so chill, they’re not straining for each win and just enjoying their time on the court…and the Old Coach dude was a great character to introduce...

3. Favorite coach(es)?

Maybe No. 6’s coach… I legit can’t remember his name but he oozes skill and experience without all the stress of younger coaches who bend over backwards for success… and while, again, the circumstances surrounding his appearance was a bit waffle-y in execution (which is about par for live action adaptations), I love that he serves as a sage outsider who can assess in three seconds what kind of player Lu Xia is, and what he needs to do to improve… I love me a good wise character who still knows how to inspire people in a fun way but you never, for a second, doubt that what they’re saying is legit advice, even if their mannerisms are goofy…

4. Favorite supporting cast member(s)? (characters who aren’t regulars, aren’t on tennis teams etc.)

Oh I mean…Stretcher Bros for life amirite? They were great…they were just hanging out, trying out.. Huang Jing is kinda jerk-ish, but he’s the starting antagonist who turns out to have a pure heart and a genuine love of the sport (kinda like Tsukishima Kei from Haikyuu!! or the GoMs from Kuroko no Basuke)… and Xiu Wen is such a soft boi who wants to shower in peace without girls being in the locker room…

Put these two besties together forever…and I just love how cuddly they are with each other…no hesitation to hold hands or hug…it’s gooood

5. Favorite original character(s) in the adaptation?

Um…idk who’s an original character??? Again never watched the original anime/read the manga!

5.5. Favourite ship? (Get ready my friendsss issa long one)

Si Yang x Qi Ying my friendssss… a super unexpected pairing that came outta nowhere!!! Because the trailer clearly shows (or maybe it doesn’t and I forgot) that Lu Xia and Qi Ying are gonna be THE THING but then we get hit with the surprise senpai-kouhai/team manager ship and I’m like uhhh were you planning this or am I reading into it too much???

Like y’all they were flirting right in the beginning… that whole bit where she stands outside the change rooms and Si Yang confronts her, and she begs him to add Lu Xia to the team (even tho he already did) and he was weirdly teasing her about the roster when he had no reason to, and she was kinda bantering back with him and she fully called him out later on… i was like, umm this is a vibe

They just kept getting thrown together in weird ways…aside from Lu Xia, she’s probably had the most interactions with Si Yang of all the other team members… she’s the only one he calls Xiao~ like the boys in the tennis club have their nicknames like Dachi, Ah Mu, Ah Yan, but only Qi Ying is Xiao Ying!! he’s not a nickname guy… and maybe if it were a girl/cheerleader thing, you’d think he’d call Peng Xiang, Xiao Xiang BUT NO… only Qi Ying gets called Xiao Ying!!!

AND ANOTHER THING: other than Lu Xia, he’s the only one concerned for Qi Yang, despite what he says, when she gets caught in the rain and gets sick… he fully visits her in her room, and receives the call about her health after they send her to the hospital… he says everyones worried BUT YO they’re straight up just bored and end up having a pillow fight…sooooo can’t be that worried…

AND ONE MORE THING: Qi Ying, I get she’s this weird mascot/team manager figure on their team (even tho she’s meant to be a cheerleader but they never invite Peng Xiang to any of their team dinners or their training camp) BUT WHEN SI YANG RETURNS HOME, THEY SEND IN QI YING TO GREET HIM and they have this whole charming convo where she teases him...and they were chatting as if they always had this banter going on but they’d only talked like 3 or 4 times on screen before then, so there’s this whole relationship she has with the tennis team (not just Lu Xia) that is implied but we don’t really see it! And when she teasingly calls him Captain Si Yang after he returns to China, he had the softest smileeee!!! HE TOTALLY DOES HAVE A SOFT SPOT FOR HER!! He didn’t want her to think he wasn’t happy to see her... and then she leads him to their surprise party in the club room and he just keeps saying Xiao Ying… like damn you keep trying to establish the Lu Xia x Qi Ying ship (and it is a decently strong ship) but Si Yang x Qi Ying is soooo good!

6. Who do you think enacted their role best?

I…I think this is obvious… NEXT

Jk… other than Si Yang, I really enjoyed the guy who plays Lu Xia - Peng Yu Chang… he played the typical “stoic, super talented/genius sports idiot” type prolific in sports anime (like Furuya from Daiya no A, Kageyama from Haikyuu!!, Midorima from KnB)… but he was never too stuck in his head, and he was never mean… too often there’ll be a moment where this type of character is played too seriously, gets stuck in their own head, and lashes out at anyone they deem getting in their way, especially when they feel they’re stuck in a rut… which Lu Xia is in, for essentially the entirety of the show, in one form or another…

But PYC played Lu Xia as this mildly cocky, but still incredibly enthusiastic young genius who is looking for the next big challenge so as to further himself, but is so obsessed with this one opponent (his dad), that he can’t see the bigger picture and realise his entire way of playing is a mirror of the very opponent he’s trying to overcome… but even at the height of his stagnation, he’s never mean to Qi Ying, who tries her best to support and encourage him… while he does distance himself from the team, it’s not an active dismissal of their assistance or support… he can play a straight faced comic when embarrassed/discombobulated (like Si Yang when faced with Yan Juice), but also always participates in most of the weird antics his team is up to… and it never feels OOC and thats clearly a result of Peng Yu Chang’s subtle acting…

ALSO PENG YU CHANG IS IN OUR SHINING DAYS, A SUPER UNDERRATED CHINESE FILM THAT HAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL TO BE ADAPTED INTO LIKE, A ONE SEASON SHOW AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU WATCH IT

7. Favorite singles match?

Oh pfft… please… PLEASE IS THERE EVEN A QUESTION it was arguably the best match of the whole show, it was what we were all waiting for, a super tension filled, super hyped up match because it features my favourite character, who has simultaneously been promoted as THE BEST PLAYER ON THE TEAM but also super injured and avoiding over-exertion… MU SI YANG…against his personal rival, whom had never tasted defeat before, and subsequently trained like crazy, throwing all of the money at professional players, FOR A YEAR, in order to be ready to face him… JI JING WU

That’s right baby, its the Imperial Pair Match (I do hope I’m using all these nicknames correctly..I just tried to pick them up from the anime/manga to save time writing out their names XD)…

This match is everything you ever want in a match…it’s a gritty, no-holds-barred, all-out, clash-of-titans-style face-off between probably the two most talented players in that whole (province? Prefecture? Idk China regional names) BUT YEAH THESE TWO ARE CLEARLY TOP TIER PLAYERS WHO FINALLY GO HEAD TO HEAD… it’s a year in the making, Ji Jing Wu is in peak physical condition, but Si Yang is not…and yet we see Si Yang powering through the literal agony of an arm injury that threatens complete destruction of not only his tennis career, but his general usage of that arm… and for glory and to bring his team to the national stage, Si Yang lays it all on the line… and he still gives Ji Jing Wu a run for his goddamn money… he matches him hit for hit, and at one point he was even WINNING…and had it not been for his arm, I swear up and down that he would’ve beaten Jingwu…

BUT THAT’S NOT EVEN THE BEST PART… i mean, all sports anime and just shounen anime in general have those moments where the characters are down and out and summoning the power of friendship and determination to their side to go above and beyond the physical limitations of their bodies… NO THE ACTUAL BEST PART WAS JI JINGWU’S RESPONSE TO THE WHOLE SITUATION

The goddamn respect he gave Si Yang.. this is his rival, the only person he’s ever viewed as equal and even superior to his own skills (at least as far as people the same age as him go)… Jingwu wants to beat him so bad… and he’s heard the rumours about Si Yang’s injury, and he even sees for himself how bad the injury is… but as a skilled player who recognises skill himself, he does not do Si Yang the disrespect of going easy on him… what kind of arrogant prick has that kind of nerve to give less than their best to someone who is giving them 120% effort… no, Ji Jingwu doesn’t hesitate to hit back full power, even as he’s yelling at Si Yang to stop before his arm is utterly destroyed… because the last thing any person of talent would want, is to see another person lose such an incredible gift… but even worse than that, have that person realise someone was going easy on them... it was so goddamn beautiful… and when Jingwu grips Si Yang’s hand and raises it high because he and everyone there knows who the real winner of that match is…they all know that they just witnessed something incredible, and he wants everyone in the stands to not only acknowledge it… but remember it…

And then he proceeds to fund Si Yang’s surgery, his flight, his meals, his rehabilitation, AS WELL AS take care of his team… and if that isn’t love, idk what is… like they don’t even disguise the hard core DEDICATION AND LOVE... Jingwu has obsessed over Si Yang for a year and it goddamn shows

Honourable Mention: I really enjoyed Zhou Zi versus the demon child whose eyes go red…we finally get to see Zhou Zi stretch his legs and push himself and I LOVED THAT… like he’s actually trying his best and that’s dope… also the match against the captain of the team his little brother his on… he basically led this cocky motherfucker by the nose for 5 games, pretends to be losing, and then destroys him in the following 7…

OH AND I GOTTA SHOUT OUT MY OTHER GLASSES BOI YAN ZHIMING VERSUS HIS BEST GUY FRIEND FROM YOUTH… that was a beautiful evolution of Ah Yan transcending but also evolving his data tennis against his childhood friend and it feels good ya know?

8. Favorite doubles match?

Oh pfft anything with the Rival Pair… they bicker like cat and dog, but then you put them on the court together, and suddenly their chemistry is through the roof… also Baiyang and Qiao Chen are a stronger couple than Qiao Chen and Yu Xing Zi and that’s the damn tea

9. Favorite story arc?

Oh man… ummm training arc with Yu Feng was fun but it was definitely beaten out by the “village raises a child” arc when Si Yang leaves, so literally all their previous opponents step up to encourage, train, or otherwise intimidate Yu Qing into giving it their all, improving, and ultimately winning the finals… plus this arc gave so much depth to the network of teams who all have the same aspirations, in the end, and want to push forward the people who beat them to not let their loss be in vain…and that’s pure…

10. Most amusing tenipuri scene(s)/moment(s)/running joke(s)?

Yan Juice... especially the first time NEXT

11. What did you like most about the adaptation?

It captured the essence of a good sports anime: power of friendship, ridiculous action sequences of outrageous moves that would never be allowed in real life, determination and guts is all you need to succeed, that all-or-nothing mentality of high schoolers who suddenly have tunnel vision and no future thinking whatsoever, and decide to risk life and limb for one match… plus it kept a charming and comedic beat running throughout, really endeared you to the characters, and their struggles... AND NO ONE WAS MEAN... well I mean Ya Jiuxin was an angry bitter jerk for a hot second, but he ended up being endeared towards the lil fluffball kouhai of his, and we all know he loves Xinglong in his heart of hearts... other characters like Jingwu, or demon child, or Zhou Yu’s captain were cocky or arrogant, but they were never mean to each other, and respected each other’s game play even if they were defeated.. a couple were poor losers, but they didn’t throw a fit or try to get revenge or anything like that... everyone, in general, had some decency to them, and in fact all of Yu Qing was a super nice...sometimes too nice and self-deprecating that you wanted to smack them...

12. What do you think the adaptation could have improved on?

This is mostly just a consequence of live action adaptations of sports anime where they have to condense a whole lot of story that is already condensed from the manga into a palatable show that anyone, not necessarily pre-existing fans of the original source, can enjoy… the story around the characters seemed waffle-y and disjointed… sometimes things would happen but wouldn’t connect smoothly to the next thing that happens… there was this whole implied close relationship between Qi Ying and the team that just was never shown… I would’ve preferred they made her an official manager, so it would make sense that she’d be so close to the team, when for whatever reason, Peng Xiang wasn’t…even tho they’re both cheer captains…

The match sequences were cut down a little too much (tho I get why)… I would have loved that final training arc to be extended, to fully flesh out how discombobulated Yu Qing was when Si Yang had to leave, and how forcefully the other teams picked them up and got them better… so to develop the dynamic between the teams before this would’ve been good, but obviously they can only got the core actors of each team at a time… hence that barbecue scene… but if they’d pulled off something like the Haikyuu!! Tokyo training arc, or even something like in KnB where the teams were thrown together in wacky hijinks or impromptu match situations to develop their camaraderie (and they sorta tried to but nothing really came of the interactions), it would’ve made the final training arc THAT MUCH MORE heartwarming and I would have cried..

Heavy Rotation Part One

Here comes my first ever 5SOS fanfic! This series is a collaboration with the remarkable @sublimehood and we are super excited to finally share it with all of you! Let me know what you think! (unless you hate it, then keep that shit to yourself :P)

Quick synopsis: New Girl meets Empire Records. All the boys are in this one, but with particular focus on Ashton <3

Warnings: I cuss a lot *shrugs* . Also, this shit is LONGGGGG haha.

Heavy Rotation- Part One

Nothing had ever looked as beautiful as the city lights that lay ahead as the Greyhound sped toward Los Angeles. It wasn’t the lights themselves that appealed to me. Growing up less than two hours outside of New York City, it would take much more than that to impress this girl. No, it was the absolute freedom and opportunity for a whole new life that this magical new city held that had me glued to the window with excitement. I pulled one ear bud out to listen to the driver’s announcement with arrival details as I began gathering my belongings I had scattered across both seats in my row, as well as the row across from me. Books, notebooks full of song lyrics, my acoustic guitar, food wrappers, random articles of clothing and all kinds of miscellaneous shit were strewn all over. Sixty five hours was far too damn long to be cooped up in a moving vehicle, despite stopping several times. I had just gathered the last of my things at the very moment the bus came to a stop at the station.

After collecting my checked bag from the bus’s underbelly, I stopped for a moment to take it all in. The sun was just starting to rise and wash over the city with a soft, warm glow. Knowing nowhere I needed to be would be open this early, breakfast at the McDonald’s across the street from the station was sounding pretty damn good. I sat alone in a booth surrounded by the only possessions I owned that mattered anymore, and scrolling through musicians forums online on my cell phone. One particular neighborhood, Silver Lake, kept coming up in discussions and I just knew that was where I needed to start my search. If I were a normal, sane human, I should be utterly terrified of the fact that I just moved across the country with about two percent of a plan for my future, but I am not, in fact, a normal or sane human. It was exhilarating to not have a clue where I was sleeping that night, and to know that if I wanted to get anywhere in this city, I had to bust my ass to do it.

I let a couple of hours pass until it seemed like I might actually be able to accomplish something, hopped in a cab, and instructed the driver to take me to his favorite spot in Silver Lake, which turned out to be this killer little locally owned coffee shop. Don’t mind if I do! Dragging my few belongings along with a latte in hand, I begin my hunt for anything that looks like it involves music and might be hiring. I couldn’t possibly have expected this to be easy, right? Every recording studio, indie radio station and music store for at least a mile was extremely quick to kick this East Coast girl with way too much shit in her hands right back to the curb. That mildly uneasy feeling in my stomach, that probably would have started for anyone else back at the bus station in Jersey, began to creep up on me. I had enough cash in my beat- up handbag to get me maybe a week in a seedy motel, but what happened after that if I didn’t find a job IMMEDIATELY, I am not ready to start thinking about yet.

This situation requires more coffee. I make my back to Mr. Taxi Driver’s favorite coffee shop, order my drink, and skim the bulletins next to the counter while waiting. Somebody, somewhere must be hiring and/or looking for a roommate, right?

“Large cold brew, coconut milk and a shot of espresso.” the barista calls, setting my drink down. But at the exact moment I reach for it, someone else does too. A large hand accidentally covers mine, and I instinctively look up to see who it belongs to. The most gorgeous hazel eyes I have ever had the privilege of seeing lock with mine. His curly dirty blonde hair falling casually in his face, that chiseled jawline, that dimpled smile- holy crap. This is one seriously beautiful human being. Something inside me vaguely in the vicinity of my stomach decides it wants to be a gymnast all of the sudden and begins performing somersaults. I feel my cheeks flush slightly and finally remember to pull my hand away.

“Sorry. I assumed it was mine, but please. Take it.” The handsome stranger insists.

“Thanks,” I reply. “Pretty unusual order. I’ve never met anyone else who drank this.” I state, awkwardly. What the hell. Who even am I right now? I am NOT awkward. Pull yourself together, bitch.

The barista calls the same order once again, and Mr. Beautiful grabs it with smirk. “Cheers.” he says, holding his drink in the air in my direction. I playfully clink my plastic cup against his, and then I notice his eyes flutter to my guitar case on my arm. “Are you a musician?” he asks.

“Aspiring. You?” I answer, avoiding looking in his eyes to regain my confidence and for fear of never being able to stop.

“Also aspiring. I work for a recording studio part time but I’m also in a band, which is completely LA cliche, but they are some of the best musicians in this city. You should check us out sometime. Oh, I’m Ashton, by the way.” He says while flashing that mesmerizing smile once again and holding his hand out to shake mine. I reach for it. Dear god, those hands. The kind of hands that make you wonder what they’re really capable of…

“Emma,” I reply, regaining my composure and flashing a flirty smile. “This recording studio you speak of wouldn’t happen to be hiring by any chance, would it?”

“Hmm, I don’t think so, but ya know, it never hurts to ask.” he replies, as he reaches over the counter to grab the barista’s sharpie and a small napkin. I’m incapable of pulling my eyes off this flawless creature as he jots something down. “Here’s the address. Go in through the record store and ask for Liz. She should be there after 1pm today.” he adds as he hands me the napkin.

“Thanks! I didn’t think I’d run into someone so willing to help around here.” I reply excitedly, taking it from him a little too slowly and deliberately rubbing my fingers against his again.

“I’ve gotta get back to work, but hopefully I’ll see you around.” Ashton says with another goddamned smile as he walks away.

What the hell just happened to me? I feel like I got punched in the gut. I pick my bag up from off the floor, and drag it with my guitar and drink to the nearest table. Checking the time on my cell phone, I realize it is only 11:30am. So, looks like I’m sitting here daydreaming about what just happened for the next hour and a half. But that’s it though, that nagging voice in my head insists. Just daydreaming. No man is getting in the way of my music.

“UGH I know, I know.” I sigh to myself out loud. The elderly couple next to me turns to me with puzzled expressions on their faces, and I simply smile back at them and turn back to my phone.

The walk to the record store wasn’t far, so I gathered up my things and decided to go there shortly after one o'clock. The black sign above the door read “Heavy Rotation” in an edgy, handwritten-looking font. I take a deep breath and enter the record store Ashton had written on the napkin. An attractive guy around my age with electric blue hair is sitting on a stool with his feet propped up on the counter next to the cash register flipping through what appears to be a rock n roll magazine. He doesn’t even blink when I walk in. “Welcome to Heavy Rotation. Let me know if you need any help.” He says, in a somewhat disgruntled tone, still not looking up.

“Hi,” I greet him as I approach the counter, “I’m looking for Liz? And also, I like your hair.”

He glances up and looks me up and down, as if appraising the situation. “Thanks, I like yours too.” My fire engine red ombre look wasn’t properly appreciated in small-town New Jersey, but I knew LA would understand.“Gimme a sec, I’ll go get Liz.” Blue-haired guy walks to the back of the room, and I take the opportunity to glance around. It’s perfect. A little dark, very “offbeat”- retro but with a cutting-edge vibe; low ceiling, eclectic lighting, rows upon rows of records, vintage and new alike. The store itself is much larger than it appears from the outside, as it stretches far back into the building. A deep purple velvet curtain covers a doorway on the right side of the room, separate from where Blue-Hair went into, and I have a sneaking suspicion the recording studio lies beyond. A thrill creeps up my spine. Solely over the concept of being so close to where music is actually produced, and having absolutely nothing at all to do with the fact that the flawless man from the coffee shop is most likely behind that curtain.

Blue-hair comes back with a blonde lady, whom one could deduce is Liz. I approach her with my hand outstretched. “Hi, Liz? I’m Emma. I met Ashton at a coffee shop and he thought I might be able to talk you into a possible job around here?”

She shakes my hand while looking me up and down, eyes lingering for a moment on my guitar. “I bet he did.” she replies with a small chuckle. Not really sure what the hell that’s supposed to mean… “It’s nice to meet you, Emma. I’m sorry, hon, but we aren’t hiring at the moment.”

“Please. I’m sorry to sound pushy and desperate but I’ll do anything you need. There has to be SOMETHING I could do here.” I press, attempting to keep the panic out of my voice.

“Well, what makes you think you would be a good fit here?” Liz asks, eyeing me interestedly.

I take a deep breath. “I have wanted to be a musician for as long as I can remember. I’ve been singing since before I could talk and music has always been my number one passion in life. I know more about music than most people twice my age. I just graduated from music school and realized the east coast scene wasn’t right for me and that I needed to get away from everything there, and hopped a Greyhound bus four days ago to come here and be close to the music. I just want to work a job with music while I work toward my dream. And, not to judge or anything, but looking at this place you’ve got here, I’d say you seem like the type of person who can appreciate that.”

Liz studies me once more, and then slowly answers. “Well, I think we could use a little help with cleaning and organizing between the store and the studio. I won’t be able to give you a ton of hours, and the pay won’t be much. Still something you’re interested in?”

“YES! I mean.. Yeah I think I could make that work.” I reply eagerly.

“Alright then. Come back to the office with me and we can sort out all the details and legal crap.”

Thirty minutes later, I follow Liz out of the office for her to give me the grand tour. Realizing I’m still lugging around everything I own, I ask, “..you wouldn’t happen to know anyone in the area who is looking for a roommate, would you?”

Blue-hair perks up from the behind the cash register, “did you say roommate? Are you looking for a place to stay?”

“Mikey… I’m not sure that’s such a good idea.” Liz chimes in immediately.

Glancing back and forth between the two of them, I turn back to Mikey, “uh, yeah I am. Do you know a place?”

“I live upstairs with my friends and we currently happen to be looking for a roommate!” he replies enthusiastically.

“Well that sounds almost too perfect… can I see the space?” I ask, ignoring the look of disapproval on Liz’s face.

“Liz, mind if I abandon my post for a minute to run her upstairs?” Mikey asks.

She sighs, and then nods.

I stash my stuff in a corner of the store and follow him up the stairs. The building is pretty old, but in the cool, artsy, vintage way and not the nasty, dilapidated old. When we reach the second floor landing, Mike pulls out a set of keys and unlocks the front door. One could definitely tell that only guys lived there, but that they appeared to have attempted to straighten up a bit. Growing up with 3 brothers, none of this phases me. The architecture was naturally gorgeous but there was really no other decor. Mismatched couches and chairs surrounded an extremely nice and unnecessarily large TV which was surrounded by various video game consoles.

“So, this is the living room. The kitchen is over there. Uh.. there’s only one bathroom, so that kinda sucks, but it’s right here.” Mikey says as he gestures me through the space. “And this here, is your room.”

It was a small room with just a twin sized bed and a small dresser already furnished. Nothing fancy, just the basics, which is exactly what I need at this moment. “How much is the rent?” I ask him.

“Uhh.. so we hadn’t really talked about it yet but considering that Luke’s parents own the building, we pretty much just each pay what we can…” he answers.

“Luke?”

“OH, yeah he’s one of my roommates and Liz’s son, I think he’s home actually, I can introduce you. HEY LUKE!” he shouts across the apartment. Moments later, a tall, good-looking blonde boy steps into the living area. “Luke, this is Emma.. your mom just hired her downstairs, and she needs a place to stay so I’m showing her the extra room.”

“Oh, hey. Nice to meet you, Emma. What do you think so far?” Luke answers, walking over to us.

“Hey,” I answer. “I think it’s perfect actually.” I bite my lip to try and hold back the smile that threatened to expose me. Was every single person who has anything to do with this building good looking?

“Can I ask what brings you to LA?” Luke asks.

“The typical, aspiring musician. But it’s everything I’ve ever wanted. I met Ashton at the coffee shop, he thought you guys might be able to help me out.” I’ve probably said too much.

“I hope so. When can you move in?” Luke asks, and Mikey gets overly excited beside me.

“I um...right now?” I laugh a little awkwardly.

“Perfect.” Luke flashes a smile that would make any girl weak in the knees. But it’s nothing compared to the dimpled one I had the pleasure of witnessing on Ashton’s face.

Things might be going my way a little too conveniently. OR maybe this is the universe’s way of telling me this is exactly where I belong. The guys offer to give me a tour of the recording studio, which I jump at since it’s basically all that’s on my mind right now. When we get back downstairs, they introduce me to a pretty dark-haired girl by the name of Georgia who works in the record store.

“Oh thank god! We need more girls around here!” she sighs with relief as she shakes my hand. She and Mikey both get back to work as Luke leads me through the curtain I had seen earlier toward the recording studio. This is it. This is what I came here for. Excitement starts building, and I’m going to pretend it’s exclusively over the possibility of finally being able to make music, NOT because I know the most gorgeous man I’ve ever seen might also be somewhere behind that curtain.

The recording studio is everything I ever imagined and more. Dark walls, sleek black furniture and decor, framed awards and photos of celebrities lining the walls. When we enter, Luke introduces me to Calum, their tall, dark and handsome ‘other roommate’ who also happens to be Georgia’s boyfriend. I mentally answer my previous question- yes, every single person associated with this building is drop-dead gorgeous.

“Other roommate?? How many people live up there?!” I ask, half amused, half concerned.

“Don’t worry,” Luke assures me, “you get your own room. We worked out a system for the rest of us….”

“.. I don’t wanna know…” I say darkly.

Both guys laugh. “Don’t worry, it’s just us, Mikey and Ashton.” Calum replies.

I choke on air at his last word. “Ashton? The guy I met at the coffee shop? HE is also our roommate??”

As if on cue, Ashton comes into the main area through a door to the left. “Hey! Emma, isn’t it? Looks like you found the place!”

“My mom hired her to help out around here, and she’s also gonna take the spare bedroom upstairs.” Luke adds.

A look passes over Ashton’s face, just briefly. What is that look? Surprise? Disappointment? Concern? It’s gone before I can even register what the hell that might be about, and his winning smile is back. “Wow! Awesome! Well, welcome.”

Just as I’m about to reply, a thin, fake-tanned girl with long blonde hair struts into the studio like she owns the place. “Hey babe, are you off work yet? You said you’d be done an hour ago.” She whines, making her way over to Ashton and wrapping her arms around his waist.

I try hard not to show any signs that my stomach plummeted through the floor at the sight of them together. Let her have him. You didn’t sit on a disgusting bus for sixty five hours to meet guys. You’re here for music. He would only distract you.

“Camille, this is Emma. She’s gonna be working with us and also renting out the spare bedroom upstairs. Emma, this is my girlfriend, Camille.” Ashton introduces us. Is it just in my head or was there something about the way he said the word ‘girlfriend’?

Camille eyes me up and down, clearly debating whether or not I might be a threat. I make the first move. “It’s great to meet you! Nice to know I won’t be constantly surrounded by only guys..” I extend my hand to shake hers. She hesitates before taking it, and doesn’t say anything. So that’s how it’s gonna be.

Ashton and Camille leave the studio together. Everybody else goes about their business, so I head back to where I had stashed my belongings in the record store and take them upstairs, to my new home. I look around as I enter it again, taking everything in. When I get to the bedroom, I toss my stuff on the floor and collapse on the bed. I made it. I did it. I am actually living in Los Angeles. Now, to survive.

INTERVIEW: Hakos Baelz Tells Us About Her Creative Process, Inuyasha Karaoke, And What Being A VTuber Means To Her

It might be easy to think that Hakos Baelz is, as her Council representation indicates, chaotic. While in some cases, that can certainly be true, she’s much more than that. She’s a jack of all trades when it comes to the VTuber landscape with her fun gameplay, entertaining singing streams, and wild and ambitious creative endeavors. Bae provides all of that in a sincere and welcoming manner that makes it easy for all her streams to feel very cozy. Plus, it probably won’t be long before you start saying “BRUH” in her same intonation. We were fortunate enough to talk with Bae about her full month of streaming in February, what it means to be a VTuber, and her ever-entertaining relationship with IRyS.

Crunchyroll: Could you introduce yourself to our readers?

You turned the month of February into “Febaerary” by streaming all month long and having it culminate in the release of your newest original song. How did you prepare yourself mentally for a whole month of streaming and get ready for such a huge project?

Baelz: The idea of feBAErary came to me in the middle of the night, as most ideas do. I was thinking about how I could hype up, not only my birthday, but also the release of my first original song. So, I was brainstorming and I thought to myself, “You know what would be insane? Streaming every day until your birthday.” At first, my reaction was … “nah ... that’s too much ...” But I’ve come to realize that whenever I have that reaction to any idea, it means I have to do it XD. Preparation wise, honestly, I didn’t do much. Just roll with the punches was my mentality for most of February.

Along with the rest of the Council, you’re approaching six months since your debut. How are you feeling this far out?

Baelz: It’s crazy to think six months has passed by so quickly! At times, it still feels so new but at other times it feels like I’ve been streaming forever. I won’t lie, there have been some tough times, but I think the main thing I’ve come to realize over the last six months is how much I appreciate the other girls. Without them, I don’t think any of us would have come this far. Every day, I think about how lucky I am to be friends with the other ladies and how much they have helped me push through hard times. I hope that continuing on, our relationship only gets stronger, and we can all continue having a blast!

One of my favorite speciality streams of yours was Inuyasha karaoke. As someone going through that series for the first time currently, it was fun to see all the songs that I know. How did it feel being able to sing a bunch of songs from a series that you enjoy so much and give that joy to so many people?

Baelz: Thank you so much for watching (ಥ﹏ಥ) !! I mentioned this in the actual karaoke stream itself, but that was one of the peaks of my career. I have loved Inuyasha for a LONGGGGG time and I never thought I would be able to sing all my favorite songs in front of so many people! It made me quite emotional during and after the stream itself. I remember sitting back and just thinking of baby Bae singing those songs in the car and annoying the heck out of Mama Rat. Never in a million years did I think those car sessions were karaoke practices for the future XD It felt so surreal; I was able to spread joy out of something that made me so happy … honestly can’t ask for anything more.

Speaking of the CHAD CAST, what has it been like creating a hololive podcast with Mori Calliope and IRyS?

Baelz: CHAD CAST was one of the most fun ideas that I’ve ever been a part of. I would like to say one of my strong points is being able to just talk and ramble. The podcast formed after a spontaneous one of Calliope’s Jump King streams and we just bonded over a range of different themes and conversation. I messaged Calli and IRyS after and brainstormed the idea of producing an actual podcast and it just materialized from there! I love doing the podcast!

The medium of VTubers really sprung up in popularity over the past couple of years, especially when the world itself was in a lot of turmoil. How has it been to not only be a part of this phenomenon but to be able to constantly bring happiness to others?

Baelz: I am extremely honored to be part of the VTuber community. I started as a simple enjoyer of virtual streamers, never thinking that I would be given the chance to not only befriend those who I looked up to but be given a platform that I can do what they do. To me, the boom of virtual streamers represents a community trying to find hope and happiness in such tough times. Seeing how the limits of “traditional” entertainment has been stretched and reshaped in way that has never been seen before is both encouraging and extremely inspirational as a creator and it makes me excited for what the future will bring ᕙ( •̀ ᗜ •́ )ᕗ !

What’s been one of your favorite moments from a stream, collab, or interaction so far?

Baelz: One of my favorite moments comes from a string of Minecraft portal streams where all the EN girls worked together to connect the JP and EN servers together. I remember that it hadn’t been too long after debuting, so it was a great opportunity to interact more with the EN members without necessarily planning out a proper collab. Every time someone was streaming Minecraft someone would just jump into VC and it would turn into a collab. Most memorable was that time we had around nine girls and it was absolute chaos. I think that was an amazing way to bond and a natural way to spend time with the other girls in EN.

BAEWATCH is a fascinating concept as it allows you to flex your voice acting skills and the Japanese adventure game/visual novel aesthetic fits it very well. What was your inspiration behind creating this series and when can fans expect more of it?

Baelz: Thank you so much ૮ ˶•~•˶ ა !! I’ve always loved playing around with my voice and creating different characters from that. Writing scripts and voicing them has always been a passion of mine and I’m so happy about this project. One thing I will say is that I am a passion creator, meaning the more passionate I am about a project/inspired by a creative spark, the quicker I finish it. At the moment, there isn’t a set schedule for BAEWATCH because I am currently creating new episodes when I have an idea that I want to produce! Besides, schedules don’t really suit me … don’t you think XD? STAY TUNED IS ALL I GOTTA SAY!!

Obviously, you don’t want to give too much away about your new song before it’s released, but what has the creative process been like when creating your own song?

Baelz: Creating my original song has been one of the most amazing things I’ve ever done. The creative process was so fun! The original is already out so GO STREAM PLAY DICE ૮(˶˃ᆺ˂˶) ! Camellia is such an amazing producer and I loved working with him. I co-wrote the song and I loved how we just bounced ideas off each other to create a truly banger song! I would be lying if I said there weren’t some instances that made me a bit anxious and stressed BUT that all comes when you put your heart into a project! I can’t wait to pump out more and more!

If there were no restrictions, who would your dream collaboration be within hololive and what would you want to do/play?

Baelz: There are no restrictions!! I stated in my debut stream that I want to collab with everyone in hololive Japan, Indonesia and holostars and I stand by that statement! I love interacting with everyone and look up to them so much! However, if you were to ask me my dream collaboration it would probably be something that hasn’t been done before. It would be a dream to organize a 4 way collab; holoJP x holoID x holoEN x holostars. As to what we would be doing, I’m still brainstorming ideas and pondering on it, but it would be a dream if a collab like that could happen one day!

I’d be remiss not to ask this since I’m a big fan of both of you. Your relationship with IRyS has become a fan favorite and there’s an incredibly fun dynamic between the two of you. Along with the marriage, to divorce, to having Mio try and fix things. What’s it been like to have this easy dynamic with her and how quickly it became something fans latched onto?

Baelz: I will be completely honest; I don’t think neither I nor IRyS thought that our dynamic would blow up to this point. Personally, I find it hilarious. Now I don’t say this often but since this is an interview, I gotta stay truthful. I love IRyS and respect her so much as a streamer. I just feel like we have a similar sense of humor and we vibe on the same wavelength which is why I felt like it was really easy to interact with her. Not to mention that IRyS is such a nice and outgoing person, we just kind of hit it off. I will say that fans can gauge how two people interact on stream and I would like to think that the big reason that fans like our dynamic is because it's genuine XD. We hang out off-stream, watch things together off-stream, and we have developed a beautiful friendship off stream as well that I wouldn’t trade for the world (✿◠ᴗ◠).

I’m surrounded by beautiful people, amazing talents, supportive staff, and the sweetest fans that one could possibly ask for ( ˘ ³˘)♥︎. What we do is definitely not easy, and we all are eternally grateful for all the support. hololive is a place where my craziest and wildest ideas come to life. Thank you so much for allowing me to do what I love, and I will continue doing my best spreading happiness to those who watch me!
