#this sounds like im the main character in a ya novel about high school
Text
Of course I want to settle down and have a life. I want a big house with my gf who will hopefully become my wife, and my best friend, and some ferrets and dogs and fish. I want a yard with a garden that I tend every year, and a porch with a swing, and I want to wake up in that beautiful house every day.
But I also can't stand that. The idea of staying in one place for more than a year is terrifying and tragic. I want to move around, have different experiences every day, meet new people. I want to have no ties, I want to be able to get up on any given day and decide to try something else.
I don't want to work in a truck stop kitchen for the rest of my life. I don't want to wake up in the same bed under the same window and take my car the same route to the same job that I've had for as long as I can remember and I'll have for the foreseeable future.

PREFERRED NAME — nora. i think i started going by it in like, 2009?? my full name is eleanor but i hated it n thought it was way too pretentious n i never felt like it fitted me so when i started writing on forums i decided i’d be a nora rather than eleanor and then my school friends called me it and it just kinda stuck, the only person who calls me eleanor is my mum
PRONOUNS — she / her / ethereal being beyond comprehension
AGE — 23 but i tell everyone im 21 because even tho time is literally fake im desperately clinging to that fleeting thing we call youth trying to catch it like smoke in my hands
PINTEREST — i actually have two. this one is my main one where i just cram all my shit n i’ve had it for years and some of its super unorganised. then i also have this one which is one i made for exclusively female characters. it started as mythological figures but now its like, women in literature and the occasional oc as well. variety is the spice of life!
DISCORD — lindsay lohan’s meth#8664
TUMBLR (PERSONAL/MUSE/RPH) — i used to be froseths but now im pvrscphones cos ya gal is a fucking whore for mythology
OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE — oi oi guvna ere’s me twitta. also here’s my letterboxd n my goodreads if anyone still uses tht
MYER-BRIGGS — enfp / infp border .... the classic profile of a lit student
HP HOUSE — hufflepuff, am fuckin mad.
ZODIAC — libra which is a joke because i am in no way balanced but i guess i AM indecisive and a peacekeeper so?
DO YOU BELIEVE IN ASTROLOGY? — i believe it when it says good shits gonna happen in my life and blame it if bad shit happens but i don’t strongly follow it i just find it interesting
HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU STARTED RPING ON TUMBLR — maybe like 14?? my first rp blog here is literally so embarassing i wrote as clove from the hunger games n my best friend irl wrote cato :/ it was wild
WHAT YEAR WAS IT? — like 9 years ago?? 2010 maybs
NAME A RANDOM ROLEPLAY THAT STICKS OUT IN YOUR MEMORY — me n my friend ellie made this really cool group the summer before we left for uni which was loosely based on a concept mentioned mayb once in the divergent series, but it gave us loads of freedom to make it our own thing. it was called the fringe n it was like..... this dystopian society where people with different genes were cut off from the rest of society n lived in overrun slum cities where different groups had like, a monopoly over weapons, produce, etc.... my character jack was the leader of this lost-boy-esque tribe called the wolf pack who were hunters n used to run across the rooftops wearing the skins of animals they’d killed and engage in tribal rituals with sacrifices to the gods n shit. sounds lame but everyone there was so invested in their character arcs that it was a shame to see it go. but ! it kind of reached its end point so we blew it up w nukes n they all died. tragic.
WHAT WEIRD ANIMAL WOULD YOU HAVE AS A PET IF IT WAS REALISTIC — a fox?? do ppl keep foxes? idk i’ve always just felt a sense of connection w them like when a fox stares at me im like this shit is life i am living and breathing in this bitch.... visceral
NAME THE FIRST SONG ON YOUR DISCOVER WEEKLY ON SPOTIFY OR THE FIRST SONG THAT COMES ON APPLE MUSIC / ITUNES SHUFFLE — everbody party tonight by cobra man n summer girl by haim..... not my usual stuff but big summer chillin vibes,.....
NAME A BOOK THAT YOU READ IN SCHOOL THAT YOU SURPRISINGLY LIKED — lord of the flies and also the handmaid’s tale. one of assignments was to write a chapter from another character’s perspective n i chose moira
NAME A BOOK YOU HATED THAT MOST PEOPLE LIKED — skellig. fuck off with ur asprin ugly bat man i don’t care. also of mice and men. don’t care about the rabbits or curley’s goddamn wife.
WHAT TV SHOW DID YOU RECENTLY BINGE? — im not a big binger bc i find it jst makes me depressed if i watch tv all day but im nearly finished stranger things season 3 n i recently finished euphoria (big rec but proceed w caution as quite triggering content)
FAVOURITE QUOTE — cool girl speech from gone girl. but also “there’s something dangerous about the boredom of teenage girls” i know its like.... such an overused quote but it really encapsulates this kind of feral girlhood that a few of my characters like bridget n greta have tapped into. i also loved the line “i feel like i could eat the world raw” from song of achilles, that really captures this kind of.... pure n childlike enthusiasm tht i wanna achieve w rory
LINK TO A VINE THAT EXUDES YOUR ‘ENERGY’ — this is my energy completely am always covered in glitter n staring broodily out of the windows of ubers at 4am like im in the sad bit of an indie film
DO YOU WRITE OUTSIDE OF RP? WHAT DO YOU WRITE? — uhh.... not as much as i shd.... i want to be a writer so i shd be makin some effort to get my stuff Out Into The World but im just not.... lol. ive done a lot of poetry collections . i wnt to finish a novel @ some point too.
THREE YOUTUBERS YOU STILL TRUST — bold of you to assume i trust any youtubers
A CELEBRITY CRUSH THAT JUST WON’T QUIT — id literally die for saoirse ronan n timothee chalamet :/ chance perdomo also owns my ass.
EVER MEET A CELEBRITY? SHARE YOUR STORY — i once high-fived dani harmer, the actress who played tracy beaker. today my sister text me tryin to make me guess what celebrity she just saw on holiday in wales and for ages she let me think it was timmothee but it was actually bradley walsh from the chase :/
WHAT’S YOUR PICTURE-PERFECT NIGHT? — i am in a bomb ass crop top and mini skirt, several scrunchies in my hair, glitter all over my face, wearing cowboy boots. we eat dinner in a trendy but affordable pub that doubles up as a cocktail bar n then we drink zombies or sex on the beaches n go to a rave where everyone is on the same wavelength n i share drugs with girls in the toilets and we swap numbers knowing we will never text each other but its ok bc in that moment we feel like we are soulmates and everyone is super drunk n touching everyone else n its all very visceral and we walk through the woods when the rave ends and lie in the grass because we wish to suck out all the marrow of life
A CONSPIRACY THEORY YOU KINDA BELIEVE IN — princess diana was murdered
ARE ALIENS REAL? — maybe the real aliens are the friends we made along the way
PLAY ANY PHONE GAMES? WHICH ONES? — love island game im addicted and way too invested in my fictional relationship with bobby, a cartoon
WHAT’S A FILM YOU LOVED WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG AND RECENTLY WATCHED, ONLY TO FIND OUT YOU DON’T ANYMORE — bold of u to assume i remember my childhood. but if we’re talking last 10 years angust, thongs n perfect snogging is so so cringe
DO YOU COLLECT ANYTHING? — pairs of glasses belonging to other ppl when they break / get new ones even though i can see perfectly well.
WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT BUT YOU’RE TOO LAZY? — mythology...... always a craving and a wish i’d read like ancient texts but my school wasn’t good enough to do greek or latin or any of that shit n even tho i could read english translations i cant be bothered. also criminal psychology

TEAM EDWARD OR JACOB? — edward :/
LAST MOVIE SEEN IN THEATRE — blinded by the light n i lovd it
DO YOU STILL READ? — when i finished uni i kinda got out of the habit but this week i finished two books so ive set myself the challenge of a book a week.

You said you had recommendations for ya wlw books?
I SW THIS LATE IM SORRY! this got long so its going under a readmore
okay before I continue I wanna note that 1) I know nothing about the authors on this list and am recommending the books only, 2) some of these I haven’t even read yet, ill put * next to the ones I HAVE read, and 3) its been a good few years since ive read some of these so bear with me!
Julie Ann Peters is a lesbian author who has written books like Luna ( known for being the first book about a trans woman published by a mainstream publisher). *Rage (a wlw ab/usive relationship that ends in a good way, VERY GRAPHIC in some scenes so I warn against it if the topic hits you hard), and *Define Normal (I own this one and it’s not explicitly wlw but its still pretty good).
I haven’t read anything else by Emily Danforth, but *The Miseducation of Cameron Post is so good!!! There was a movie made for it recently and while I haven’t seen it yet I’m excited to. It’s a happy ending, from what I remember!
Echo After Echo by Amy Rose Capetta seems so cute! It’s about a girl who gets crush on a girl during their theater class, and it’s high on my lists of to-reads.
Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, creator of the Bechdel-Wallace Test and lesbian. Must I say more.
[quick note; for these next two, I cant remember if these have nsfw scenes in them or not.. I think so, so I wanted to say it. Id rather not get any asks about why I ever read these fhhevbh]
*Love Waits by Gerri Hill. Oh, I remember reading this book on a bench covered in graffiti after school, my middle school self hiding as I made sure my friends couldn’t see it.
*Down to the Bone by Mayra Lazara Dole… This was THE FIRST WLW BOOK I read. It’s about a girl who gets kicked out of her house, blah blah all that stuff, and it explores the Cuban gay community in Miami at the time I think! A good read.
Tell Me Again How A Crush Should Feel by Sara Farizan looks great as well! It’s about a girl from a Muslim family struggling with her feelings, from what I see from the reviews it’s more of a coming-of-age tale with a more middle school mindset in the MC. The representation is apparently spot on too!
Far From You by Tess Sharp looks AMAZING? A bisexual lead with not a lot of relationship love exactly, but more of a murder mystery deal. The reviews are loving it, so maybe I might too.
*Symptoms of Being Human by Jeff Garvin is GREAT! No, this is not reaaally about wlw, but it’s a good representation of a genderfluid person and you never know the main character’s biological sex, which was handled and done very well. I WANT TO NOTE! HOWEVER! THIS IS SPOILERS BUT ITS VERY IMPORTANT! There is a scene, which I think was quick but still terrible, where the MC is s/xually assaulted. It’s bad, I hated it, and it was completely unexpected. I don’t recommend this is you are troubled by that, since I don’t remember exactly when or where it happens. :(
Crush by Carrie Mack is a short story about a girl who gets a crush on a girl! From what the reviews say, it’s soft, sweet, and a cliché but nice story.
…. okay, this next one is iffy and it’s up next on my reading list but it seems….. …….. alright, maybe… Ramona Blue is, summarized, about a girl who identifies as a lesbian but falls in love with a guy. From the reviews, it seems this is handled well. On the link, a review by “Alex” that starts with “I HAVE ACTUALLY READ THIS BOOK” has quotes from it and has good points, so I’m going to hesitantly put this down too.. I’ll talk about it again once I’ve read it.
The Space Between by Michelle Teichman seems fun!!!! A ‘popular’ girl gets a crush on a loner girl, pining, all that stuff. It looks to be alright, hopefully it is!
My Mixed-Up Berry Blue Summer by Jennifer Gennari is about a little girl and how she grows with two moms! This is… more of a book for middle-schoolers, but if you’re okay with that or know a young kid who can relate to this, try it out with them.
okay uh,, this became more of a book hunt for interesting and good sounding wlw/lgbt stories… but I had a lot of fun putting this list together. one of my guilty pleasures is YA fiction, and I never talk about it a lot so this was a nice outlet. if its wanted, I could try to put a mlm or just a general YA list together too. its really late so im gonna stop looking these up. ty for asking!
EDIT: books people told me to add!!
Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan is a fantasy YA novel, but I honestly can’t explain it better than the link..
The Gloaming by Kirsty Logan. Lesbian. Mermaids.

lgbt books i read, 2018 edition I guess. I didn’t include shit that everyone knows like Bechdel or Sarah Waters or even some more popular YA books because the list is long enough and those are already mentioned everywhere else. Or red sister because the first book didn't have enough gays to warrant inclusion and i haven't read the second one.
No one ever does this but if you want content warnings for a specific book DM me or send an ask.
also again, more lesbians than anything else.
2017
2016
All Good Children by Dayna Ingram: If you read a single book in this list let it be this. Unless you’re upset easily then maybe not because this book is surprisingly dark, though not gratuitous on page-violent it’s still pretty upsetting.
anyway that said this book is great only one on this list i have a 5 stars to. The plot is really hard to explain without it sounding stupid so I won’t risk it. It’s a dark dystopian, you follow 3 pov characters and they’re all great and so well written. 2/3 are lesbians. Please read it. N ONE KNOWS THIS BOOK BUT ITS SO GOOD. ! I wanna reread it now instead of writing the rest of this post.
Assume Nothing by Leanne Franson: I’m including this because I literally never heard about it? It has less than 20 ratings on goodreads as of writing this. It’s a autobiographic graphic novel about a bi woman about stuff in her life from discovering her sexuality, to finding a strip of human skin in her apartment. It’s alright.
(series) The Wall of Storms by Ken Liu: it’s a Chinese based epic fantasy with gay characters of varying importance. This is the second in the series which you could read first if you really wanted to as it’s set a large chunk of time after the first book. Also the first book is much more straight and barely has female characters. It’s still good though as far as those things go. I’m not a huge fan of the f/f relationship in the second book involving two main characters but it’s there. Also Zomi is great as are all the other female characters.
Afterparty by Daryl Gregory: the main thing you need to know about this book is that it exists and has a lesbian main character. I didn’t believe  the latter until I read it since no one ever talks about it having a lesbian main character even though it’s a fairly well known book. Anyway, this is a book about uhhh drugs and religion. Listen I can’t do the plot justice it’s really weird but really good.
(series) The Traitor Baru Cormorant  by Seth Dickinson: If you're a. into fantasy or b. into lesbian books you probably heard of this. You also probably heard it’s very tragic. You heard right. Anyway this is a high fantasy about economics which is also pretty tragic in itself when you think about it.
Ice Massacre by Tiana Warner: Technically a series but I didn’t like the 2nd book so much and dropped it. I loved the first one enough that I still want to put it there though. Most people don’t seem to mind the rest of the series either so don’t let me stop you - especially if you like YA. This is a story about mermaid who kill humans and humans who kill mermaids, and also humans and mermaids who wanna do neither because they’re in love. yeah. Mostly it’s about some teens stuck on a ship having a really lousy time though. It’s great.
Nevada by Imogen Binnie: This isn’t a book about uh. It’s about....Okay it’s a very flow of consciousness ... “story” about a trans woman's life as she....lives her life. She has a lot of thoughts about a lot of things and she’s smart and funny and mostly she’s depressed so if you are also depressed you go like yeah. And if you aren’t depressed you probably still go yeah because her opinions and observations are pretty good. You probably don’t think you’Ll like it which is fair because I didn’t think I would until I read it and did.
Click by Sara Marx: I read this because I was looking at a list of indie lesbian books and I was like “my girlfriend is called Sarah and Marx was a pretty cool dude ill read her book”. It’s..uh. A drama? crime? story. It’s alright.  which is more than I can say for most other super indie lesbian books.
Sabine by A. P.: this is fucking weird. Listen I’ll recc this only to people who really like weird gothic-y pretentious stuff that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. It’s a boarding school story..with possibly lesbian vampires. It’s written in a way you’Ll either love or hate check the first page and you’ll understand immediately if this book is for you.
(series) Criminal Gold by Ann Aptaker: this is a noir crime story with a butch lesbian protag. this sentence tells you everything you need to know about it. The writing was competent  and the characters believable and interesting (which is again, more than I can say about most indie lesbian stuff I read). It’s a series but it would work as standalone, I haven’t read the rest yet though I intend to.
INSEXTS by Marguerite Bennett: just read my review for the first volume it’s short  I don’t want to retype all that. Thanks.
Theft by B.K. Loren this is literary fiction with a lesbian main character which i felt i was too young to appreciate. beautiful writing. Mostly about loss and growing up, if it sounds up your alley check it out. I think if it was more well known it’d win awards and shit it feels like that kind of book. I felt under equipped to appreciate it so I hope other people do.
Silk by Caitlín R. Kiernan: Half of the cast is lgbt. They’re like...a bunch of goth and punk young adults..and there may or may not be angels. It’s...horror I suppose. Mostly it’s confusing. I don’t know if I recommend this book exactly but im including it in case anyone does read it so they can explain to me what the point was.
Passing Strange by Ellen Klages This is a book about lesbians in 1940 new york. there is some magic and there is art. Also beautifully written. It’s just over 100 pages though so I won’t say anymore lest it get’s longer than the actual book.

-------
empire kids chat and caleb admitting insecurities about powerful people and being scared about the consequences of his actions and the group’s actions. caleb is scared about being forced to leave for safety and being ‘flayed alive’. my thoughts are he would leave if he became a threat to the others by being there or vise versa. trent would extort that b/c hes a dick
“caleb, unfortunately, you don’t get to choose who cares for you” you’re fucking correct Beau

Im a bit shocked that people use real life points to justify certain things. that might sound confusing. but i mean that for instance obviously murder is wrong in REAL non fairy tale life. and as you said someone in jail for 20 years for killing a bunch of people is someone most SANE people would go near. but i feel like murder in this show among many other things is common place, and because of that we need to stop treating it like the murder we know. i mean it's still awful and but its
cont: not irredeemable. and im saying this for every villain whose killed someone on the show. i meant wouldnt go near btw.
————————————————-
***I just realized that this happens to be our 2000th Post. Wild.***
So I think part of the problem is that the show isn’t even consistent on how it treats not only murders, but just killing in general.
For example, Snowing (especially the Snow part of Snowing) didn’t kill Regina because it would, “Darken their hearts,” even though Regina was literally killing people by the town. And then when Snow engineered the death of Cora because Cora was being a threat, her heart did blacken. So that would seem like the show is saying, “Killing=Bad always.”
But, in the same breath, when Snowing kills foot soldiers in flashbacks or Regina talks about all the people she killed in the past and says she has no remorse–no moral quandary. Which seems like the show saying, “Killing is OK as long as it’s (1) not personal and/or (2) in the past.”
Audiences largely take their cue of what’s cool and not cool in the universe of the show from the tone of the show and it can be silly to take the rules of the real world and put them on a show. Like, in my torts class, we had a question about whether Prince Charming kissing Snow White without her consent was assault and, obviously, that’s a question meant to be ridiculous and stretch our arguing skills, because she was under a sleeping curse and by fairy tale rules, that’s what you do when someone’s under a sleeping curse. You don’t factor in U.S. tort law. But, because this show isn’t consistent about what the rules on crime and especially killings are*, I see how people would judge characters by wildly different yardsticks.
Despite the unevenness, I think the show is trying to invoke what I call the Vampire Boyfriend Rule. I may have talked about it on here before. The VB Rule goes like this: You have snagged yourself a super hot vampire boyfriend who has, up until now, survived by killing innocents and drinking human blood but, because of your love, he’s *seen the light* and he’s going to *change* and only drink animal blood/drink synthetic blood/drink the blood of criminals/whatever. And, you in turn, will gloss over all the brutal murders he commit before he met you because he didn’t know any better then. Only murders starting *now* count.
It’s the rule a lot of YA novels I read in high school seemed to run on (not just vampire ones either). I, personally, would be waaaaaay more concerned about those previous murders, but it’s a well established rule in fantasy-fiction. I think that’s the convention of fiction the show is trying to invoke to so-so results.** Like most things on this show, it’s invocation would be much improved with more consistency in the show overall.
*See also: Regina going off on Zelena for raping Robin…after having done the same thing to Graham for 28 years and getting called out on it exactly zero times.
**With Belle and Rumple, it basically works because Belle mainly gets on his case for only the murder of the week, not all the stuff he did before she was in the picture. But I feel she’s too chill about the more recent murders a lot of the time. She finally got fed up recently which is probably healthy, but idk how long that’s gonna last. With Emma and Hook, it basically works too bc Dark-Oneing aside, Hook hasn’t committed any major felonies since he got with Emma (I typed hooked up, stared at my screen, then backspaced). If I were Emma, I would be less chill about the time he tried to kill me before that but VBR. He gets a clean slate. With Regina and Robin, (plus Regina’s relationship w/ all the main heroes in a platonic version of the VBF) it doesn’t work very well because she’s committed crimes/tried to commit crimes post-friendship/relationship. Like in last ep when she was arguing with Wish!Robin surrounded by “the hearts of my enemies” and he was like, “Really dude?” which, same.

Exclusive: Bestselling author E. Lockhart to publish a new YA novel
Image: delacorte press
Bestselling author E. Lockhart has a new YA novel hitting shelves this fall.
SEE ALSO: Read an exclusive excerpt of Jeff Zentner’s upcoming ‘Goodbye Days’
Announced today, Lockhart’s Genuine Fraud will be released Sept. 5 by Delacorte Press, and imprint of Random House Children’s Books.
Edgy and inventive, Genuine Fraud is an instantly memorable story of love, betrayal and entangled relationships that are not what they seem. Lockhart introduces readers to the story of Imogen and JuleImogen, a runaway heiress, an orphan, a cook and a cheat; Jule, a fighter, a social chameleon and an athlete. This is a novel about intense friendship, a disappearance, murder, bad romance, a girl who refuses to give people what they want from her and a girl who refuses to be the person she once was. Who is genuine? And who is a fraud? You be the judge.
Lockhart is a staple in the YA world, and she’s perhaps best known for her haunting We Were Liars, a deluxe edition of which will be published this May.
MashReads spoke to Lockhart about Genuine Fraud, her career, and her advice for 2017. Then read on for an exclusive excerpt of her upcoming novel.
When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?
I read Joan Aikens The Wolves of Willoughby Chase in third or fourth grade and immediately began writing novels about Victorian orphanages, windswept landscapes and cool uniforms.
What draws you to writing YA books?
In young adulthood, people separate from the values and embraces of their families of origin and begin to define themselves as individuals. That process of separation and self-reinvention is extremely interesting to me. Genuine Fraud is very much a YA novel, even though it doesnt take place in high school.
Is your writing process different depending on the genre youre writing?
Genuine Fraud is a psychological thriller, and the only other such book I have written is We Were Liars. All my other books are comedies! The thrillers have intricate plots that require more planning.
Genuine Fraud sounds a bit like an oxymoron. Do you have a favorite oxymoron?
Film producer Samuel Goldwyn is often quoted as saying, I never liked you, and I always will. My new novel is in something of the same spirit.
Genuine Fraud is another suspense novel, like your emotional bestseller We Were Liars. Can you give a hint as to the emotions readers are likely to have?
Both books have twisty plots, but with Genuine Fraud youre unlikely to need a tissue. Rather, I recommend Rolaids and seltzeryoull want a strong stomach.
Youre known for writing incredibly strong and complex female characters, particularly Frankie Landau-Banks, who is seen by many as a feminist icon. The women in Genuine Fraud seem to be in a similar vein. Do you feel you have a responsibility as a YA writer?
Thank you. I am a feminist, most certainly, but my responsibility as a novelist is not to provide role models. My responsibility is to try to write something that feels true to me on some emotional and intellectual level. I write to make a piece of narrative art that represents the inside of my head. I hope that if I have done so well enough, people will respond to it.
As its a new year, what is your advice for your readers for 2017, both for life and for aspiring writers?
Raise your voice. Its an everyday practice. As a writer, as an activist, as a friend and colleague, student or teacherraise your voice in protest, in apology, in curiosity, in praise, in self-expression.
What were some of your favorite books of 2016?
I read a lot of travel stories and novels written in the nineteenth century. I read cookbooks and middle-grade fiction and comic essays. But Genuine Fraud is a complicated portrait of an extremely difficult person, and a twisty thriller as welland here are two 2016 books I read while I was revising it that fit that same description and are incredibly juicy: Girls on Fire by Robin Wasserman is an adult novel about young women behaving more than badly, raw and gorgeous. My Sister Rosa by Justine Larbalestier is a YA novel about a boy whose younger sister is a psychopathchilling and thought-provoking.

It was a bloody great hotel.
The minibar in Jules room stocked potato chips and four different chocolate bars. The bathtub had bubble jets. There was an endless supply of fat towels and liquid gardenia soap. In the lobby, an elderly gentleman played Gershwin on a grand piano at four each afternoon. You could get hot clay skin treatments, if you didnt mind strangers touching you. Jules skin smelled like chlorine all day.
The Playa Grande Resort in Baja had white curtains, white tile, white carpets, and explosions of lush white flowers. The staff members were nurselike in their white cotton garments. Jule had been alone at the hotel for nearly four weeks now. She was eighteen years old.
This morning, she was running in the Playa Grande gym. She wore custom sea-green shoes with navy laces. She ran without music. She had been doing intervals for nearly an hour when a woman stepped onto the treadmill next to her.
This woman was younger than thirty. Her black hair was in a tight ponytail, slicked with hair spray. She had big arms and a solid torso, light brown skin, and a dusting of powdery blush on her cheeks. Her shoes were down at the heels and spattered with old mud.
No one else was in the gym.
Jule slowed to a walk, figuring to leave in a minute. She liked privacy, and she was pretty much done, anyway.
You training? the woman asked. She gestured at Jules digital readout. Like, for a marathon or something? The accent was Mexican American. She was probably a New Yorker raised in a Spanish-speaking neighborhood.
I ran track in secondary school. Thats all. Jules own speech was clipped, what the British call BBC English.
The woman gave her a penetrating look. I like your accent, she said. Where you from?
London. St. Johns Wood.
New York. The woman pointed to herself.
Jule stepped off the treadmill to stretch her quads.
Im here alone, the woman confided after a moment. Got in last night. I booked this hotel at the last minute. You been here long?
Its never long enough, said Jule, at a place like this. So what do you recommend? At the Playa Grande? Jule didnt often talk to other hotel guests, but she saw no harm in answering. Go on the snorkel tour, she said. I saw a bloody huge moray eel.
No kidding. An eel?
The guide tempted it with fish guts he had in a plastic milk jug. The eel swam out from the rocks. She must have been eight feet long. Bright green.
The woman shivered. I dont like eels.
You could skip it. If you scare easy.
The woman laughed. Hows the food? I didnt eat yet.
Get the chocolate cake.
For breakfast?
Oh, yeah. Theyll bring it to you special, if you ask.
Good to know. You traveling alone?
Listen, Im gonna jet, said Jule, feeling the conversation had turned personal. Cheerio. She headed for the door.
My dads crazy sick, the woman said, talking to Jules back. Ive been looking after him for a long time. A stab of sympathy. Jule stopped and turned.
Every morning and every night after work, Im with him, the woman went on. Now hes finally stable, and I wanted to get away so badly I didnt think about the price tag. Im blowing a lot of cash here I shouldnt blow.
Whats your father got?
MS, said the woman. Multiple sclerosis? And dementia. He used to be the head of our family. Very macho. Strong in all his opinions. Now hes a twisted body in a bed. He doesnt even know where he is half the time. Hes, like, asking me if Im the waitress.
Damn.
Im scared Im gonna lose him and I hate being with him, both at the same time. And when hes dead and Im an orphan, I know Im going to be sorry I took this trip away from him, dyou know? The woman stopped running and put her feet on either side of the treadmill. She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. Sorry. Too much information.
Sokay.
You go on. Go shower or whatever. Maybe Ill see you around later.
The woman pushed up the arms of her long-sleeved shirt and turned to the digital readout of her treadmill. A scar wound down her right forearm, jagged, like from a knife, not clean like from an operation. There was a story there.
Listen, do you like to play trivia? Jule asked, against her better judgment.
A smile. White but crooked teeth. Im excellent at trivia, actually.
They run it every other night in the lounge downstairs, said Jule. Its pretty much rubbish. You wanna go?
What kind of rubbish?
Good rubbish. Silly and loud.
Okay. Yeah, all right.
Good, said Jule. Well kill it. Youll be glad you took a vacation. Im strong on superheroes, spy movies, YouTubers, fitness, money, makeup, and Victorian writers. What about you?
Victorian writers? Like Dickens?
Yeah, whatever. Jule felt her face flush. It suddenly seemed an odd set of things to be interested in.
I love Dickens.
Get out.
I do. The woman smiled again. Im good on Dickens, cooking, current events, politics… lets see, oh, and cats.
All right, then, said Jule. It starts at eight oclock in that lounge off the main lobby. The bar with sofas.
Eight oclock. Youre on. The woman walked over and extended her hand. Whats your name again? Im Noa.
Jule shook it. I didnt tell you my name, she said. But its Imogen.
Jule West Williams was nice-enough-looking. She hardly ever got labeled ugly, nor was she commonly labeled hot. She was short, only five foot one, and carried herself with an up-tilted chin. Her hair was in a gamine cut, streaked blond in a salon and currently showing dark roots. Green eyes, white skin, light freckles. In most of her clothes, you couldnt see the strength of her frame. Jule had muscles that puffed off her bones in powerful arcslike shed been drawn by a comic book artist, especially in the legs. There was a hard panel of abdominal muscle under a layer of fat in her midsection. She liked to eat meat and salt and chocolate and grease.
Jule believed that the more you sweat in practice, the less you bleed in battle.
She believed that the best way to avoid having your heart broken was to pretend you dont have one.
She believed that the way you speak is often more important than anything you have to say.
She also believed in action movies, weight training, the power of makeup, memorization, equal rights, and the idea that YouTube videos can teach you a million things you wont learn in college.
If she trusted you, Jule would tell you she went to Stanford for a year on a track-and-field scholarship. I got recruited, she explained to people she liked. Stanford is Division One. The school gave me money for tuition, books, all that.
What happened?
Jule might shrug. I wanted to study Victorian literature and sociology, but the head coach was a perv, shed say. Touching all the girls. When he got around to me, I kicked him where it counts and told everybody who would listen. Professors, students, the Stanford Daily. I shouted it to the top of the stupid ivory tower, but you know what happens to athletes who tell tales on their coaches.
