#this movie will probably be like 90 percent blue screen

I absolutely adore your writing!!! If you're taking prompts, then anything involving Maverick + Ice's academy ring would be 💖💖
In bed. Early afternoon. The mid-‘90s.
Midsummer sex in Southern California is one of those things that feels more romantic than it probably is, maybe just because of how it leaves you: sweltering and sticky and satisfied. It’s two in the afternoon on a Saturday, and he and Ice are currently sweltering and sticky and satisfied, and working on being asleep, with absolutely no plans otherwise. Which is nice. Nice to just do nothing for once in their hectic lives. Well, they have to go to Bradley’s Little League game around seven, and then take him out to dinner, per Carole’s orders, but that’s it. Otherwise no plans.
He’s just kinda pondering. Thinkin’. They’ve been sleeping all day, so they’re not gonna sleep tonight…maybe Carole will take them out dancing…that would be fun, even if they’re a little old…what was that movie called, Saturday night fever, yeah, he could use some of that…But not right now.
Right now is pretty perfect. Not a hundred percent perfect, because nothing ever is, but pretty close. The sun (maybe too hot, it’s Southern California) is high and strong and golden; the windows (letting in all kinds of bugs because they aren’t screened) are tossed wide open; the curtains (the previous tenant’s, moth-eaten and ratty) are billowing in the breeze; the ceiling fan (creaky and could crash down and kill them any moment) is circulating lazily; Ice (Ice) is dozing next to him. Romantic, in an imperfect, Southern-California way. Easy. Laid-back. No-stress. Maverick is staring up, through eyes-half-closed, at the shimmering ocean-blue caustic reflections of Ice’s Naval Academy ring, swaying on the ceiling in time to his gentle breaths. Kind of beautiful.
And then Maverick has a thought. Well, maybe more of an idea. Which is never good.
And it’s one of those thoughts. One of those ideas. Not necessarily dangerous, per se, but definitely a little impulsive, definitely a little stupid. In college, one of his engineering professors had told him, You know, the problem with you, Mitchell, is that you’re a certifiable genius ninety percent of the time, but it’s that other stupid-ass ten percent that gets you in trouble. Maverick had answered, That’s a solid fucking A.-minus! and nearly got stuck on academic probation. Saying something like that is an A-, stupid-ass ten-percent idea. So, too, is the idea he’s currently having. But he’s not gonna stop himself from having it. He’s fucked-out and still up for anything. He’s in his early thirties. Basically puberty round II, and he’s in bed with Tom Kazansky, who’s resting his big Naval-Academy-ornamented hand on his chest, so excuse him for not thinking straight.
Maverick picks up Ice’s right hand, the one on his chest, and holds it gently, trying not to wake him. He wants to get a good look at this ring. He’s never really looked at it up close before. That ugly gaudy blue stone is almost surely fake. Glass, maybe. What’s it taste like?
He brings Ice’s hand to his mouth. Doesn’t stick Ice’s whole ring finger inside, because Ice would wake up then, but he does lap the jewel of the ring with his tongue (tastes like Ice’s sweat, as expected), and then bites the crown, and then draws as much of the ring into his mouth as possible. Just trying to get it wet. Tracing it with his tongue for sensory pleasure. When he takes it out of his mouth, some of his spit goes with it. And now, sufficiently lubricated, he reaches up with his other hand to wriggle it off, so curious, brain-addled, a little desperate, his chin still wet with his own saliva…
…and Ice whines, “…No.” Barely even a coherent sound. Almost like a moan. Fuck, so close to a moan.
“No?” Maverick whispers. His fingers go still on the ring, indecisive.
“Already tried,” Ice breathes, then sniffs and licks his lips and swallows and sighs. Eyes unmoving behind his eyelids.
This thought goes straight to Maverick’s dick. Ice, experimenting. “…You…have?”
“Doesn’t fit.”
He can hear himself breathing for a moment. Shaky breaths. “…Even soft?”
Ice’s face scrunches in half-asleep annoyance, mock-wounded offense. “You’ve seen me.” You’ve seen me soft, you know I’m not fitting in a ring meant for my finger. Okay. Maybe that should’ve been obvious. But Maverick sometimes loses his mind a little when it comes to sticking his dick in places it shouldn’t be, which is how he wound up in bed with Iceman Kazansky in the first place. And also how he keeps winding up in bed with Iceman Kazansky. “…Even soft.”
Maverick whispers, “…Can I… try?”
Ice grumbles, “No-Gimme-my-fuckin-hand-back.” And he pulls his hand away and half-consciously wipes the spit off on the sheet and then starts moving and lumbering and shifting his weight in bed, preparing, as only half-asleep people can prepare, to roll over onto his other side. As he does, he keeps on mumbling, his brain clearly not online yet, “Not-takin-you-to-the hospital ‘cause you got stuck-in-my…fuckin’…if you wan’ me to jerk-you-off wearing-it, okay, I’ve done that forty-one-thousand-times…but not…” And his other shoulder hits the mattress and Maverick can hear, in the cadence of his breathing, that he’s immediately passed out cold again.
Maverick pokes him and prods him and wakes him up. “Ice.”
“…What.”
“You just said you would. You can’t say it and then fall asleep.”
Ice mumbles something very rude, but reaches back behind himself anyway, gropes around blindly until he finds enough purchase to give Maverick a few half-hearted and not-very-compelling tugs.
Then, apparently getting tired, he pulls his arm back and carelessly orders (rather lucidly for a man who’s supposedly sleeping), “I’m sleeping, Maverick. Finish yourself off.”
“…Gimme it.”
Ice acquiesces, if only to make Maverick leave him alone; and pulls his ring off and passes it over his own freckled shoulder.
No, of course it doesn’t fit, even only half-hard. Maverick’s flopped over onto his back to try. He glances over at Ice—at the downy invisible fuzz on his shoulders glowing white in the sun, at the smooth suntanned plane of his back, at the sheet pooling over the sharp angle of his hipbone—then back to himself. Gives himself a couple pumps, gets himself all the way hard, sets the ring atop his cock like a little crown, looks over at Ice again, wishes he were awake so they could laugh about this together for a minute and then Ice could tell him to not be so fucking juvenile and then suck him off. Ring in his mouth as he does. (That would probably hurt, actually. All that motion and all that metal. Lots of ways that could go wrong. Moving on.)
And then—here’s a thought—Maverick…puts it on. Just slips it onto his right ring finger. Steps into a heritage he’s never owned. Could’ve, but never will.
It does feel powerful, to wear it. Like marrying the Navy. This is forever, Navy-baby. In sickness and in health. Till death do us part. He imagines the life he could’ve had at the Academy; and wonders if Ice, who was twenty-one when Maverick was still only eighteen, would have even given him the time of day. Probably would’ve shoved him into lockers in high school. Okay, that’s a turn-on, too, weirdly. Okay. Things to consider. The brass of the ring is still warm from Ice’s long slender fingers. Feels good. Inspires the question: does Ice keep the ring on when he jacks off out at sea? Probably. It does feel good. Feels powerful. The historical force of America’s Navy, condensed into the force with which he’s gripping his own cock. (And other normal thoughts.) Yeah, Ice probably keeps it on. Definitely. He’s married to the Navy. Jacking off out at sea wearing his Navy wedding ring is just consummating the marriage. (And other normal thoughts.) Maverick wonders how many times Ice has done exactly what he’s doing now. And that’s a turn-on, too, obviously.
He turns onto his side, tips his forehead against Ice’s upper spine, mouths at the velvety skin there, presses his nose against him. Of course there’s the musk and salt of his dried sweat, but also the softer, cleaner smell of him that Maverick’s come to recognize as unmistakably Ice…who left the Naval Academy as Brigade Commander and whose class ring is being worn by the hand Maverick’s slowly lazily fucking…willingly given…Ice has always kept it on, for all their various activities. Married to the Navy even with his fingers knuckle-deep inside Maverick. Sort of like an extramarital affair. Maverick likes being the other woman; and also, those are good memories, the ones where Ice was knuckle-deep inside him, and this ring was pressed up against the most intimate part of him, does the Navy know you’re cheating on her with me? —he comes a little quicker than he had intended, and a lot more quietly than he thought he would; just sort of lets it wash over him, inevitable, unsurprising. Not earthshattering or anything, but he also wasn’t dragging it out.
And then he has another thought, ooh, goody! —lodging itself inside his honey-thick burning pleasure. So he indulges this impulse, too, and before the last couple spurts, he thumbs Ice’s ring off into his palm and then cups himself loosely and finishes half onto the ring and half onto the sheets. (It’s laundry day. That’s why they were up all night having sex, and not exactly stressing about the mess. Ice has Maverick’s laundry schedule memorized by now.) Fuck. That’s good.
Before the clarity can hit him and take all the fun out of his idea, he catches his breath, solidifies, and holds the wet ring back over Ice’s shoulder—has to tap him to drag him back into the land of the living. Ice startles a little, but he accepts the ring back into his hand. What’s he gonna say? What’s he gonna do? It’s got Maverick’s come all over it! Maverick is instigating. Intentionally.
…Ice just sleepily puts it back on, and in a couple seconds is dead to the world again.
Maverick’s stuck there for a minute, his brain going clear and his mouth open idiotically, but then he closes it. There’s nothing he can say. Yeah. That was the logical conclusion of that interaction. Whatever.
He smiles to himself, yawns, and rolls over to doze off again. Deal with it later.
And a few slow golden hours later, when the sun is floating orange and swollen above the horizon outside, and the alarm Maverick set on his digital watch goes off, ensuring they don’t sleep through Bradley’s baseball game, Ice groggily comes to and sits up on the side of the bed and yawns big and fucks up his already-fucked hair a little more with his fingers. Sighs, drowsily drags a hand down his stubble, scrapes a hand over his stomach, itches the hair on his chest. Then he looks at his right hand, at the glinting ring, glinting a little duller because of what’s dried on it; then he glances accusingly down at Maverick, who’s still stretching next to him long and lazy like a cat, silently inquiring, …did you…? And Maverick (who hates being accused of anything, even and especially if he’s guilty) huffs and rolls his eyes at the presumption, but finally relents, yeah, I did. And Ice just exhaustedly nods and smiles and shrugs his shoulders in common understanding, saying, yeah, I get it; don’t worry about it; it does that to me, too… and then tiredly heaves himself out of bed to go wash his hands.

Chloe and Halle Bailey, Jeremy Scott’s Newest Front Row Stars, on Beyoncé, Their New Album, and the Black-ish Spinoff
When they first entered Jeremy Scott’s New York showroom Friday, Chloe and Halle Bailey were a bit overwhelmed. They were confronted by a kaleidoscope of colors, a daunting array of garments, and a wide mandate in the designer’s archives. That is, the sisters—who are musicians, actors, and protégées of Beyoncé signed to her Parkwood Entertainment label—had arrived with a deceptively simple assignment: to select looks for the designer’s Spring 2018 show, which they planned to attend that night. But that left them with a lot of choice. They eventually emerged, as they often do, with coordinating looks. “We’re the same, but we’re different as well,” Chloe said. “We like to incorporate that through our fashion.” She opted for a black sleeveless minidress printed with trompe l’oeil butterflies formed out of two pistols in blues, pinks, yellows, and greens, with blue and black calf-hair platform shoes, while her younger sister selected the same print in a silk motorcycle jacket, paired with distressed Levi’s and platform heels in black with yellow flowers—“our favorite pieces, and the ones that were cohesive with one another,” Chloe described. These were the looks that hung in the wardrobe of their Midtown hotel room Friday evening, just more than an hour before the show was scheduled to begin. It was a crisp, early fall night, and as they explained their selection, the doorbell rung a couple times—at one point, to let their dad Doug, who is also their manager and frequent fashion show companion, in, and then to welcome in a room-service delivery of spaghetti. (“I love carbs,” Chloe later said enthusiastically—especially as vegans, which she and Hall have been for more than two years now.)
Though Friday marked their first time at a Jeremy Scott show—and their first show of the Spring 2018 season—the sisters are now nearly fashion week veterans. They attended their first fashion show, Tory Burch’s Spring 2017 runway, almost exactly a year ago, proceeding to sit in the front row at the Louis Vuitton show later that season (along with Sasha Lane, their “dear friend,” as Chloe described her). Then, earlier this year, the sisters got a glimpse of the other side, making their runway debut at Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall 2017 show. They sauntered down the runway in minidresses, tiaras, and red boots—holding hands all the while.“It’s like a different stage,” Halle said, comparing walking a runway to performing music. Still, “it was very different for us because we’re used to, we go on stage, we sing, and we feel this, like…” She exhaled with a sigh, a release of tension. “We worked so hard.” When they finished their brief lap of the runway, by contrast, “We were like, ‘Oh, that’s it? Cool.’” (She added, as a disclaimer, “but it was really fun.”)The sisters had just arrived in New York the previous day, fresh off a week of filming the first few episodes of Grown-ish, the new Black-ish spinoff in which Yara Shahidi’s character Zoey Johnson departs for college. Chloe and Halle already get mistaken for twins “all the time,” they told me in unison (perhaps an understandable misconception, considering they speak in unison, often finish each other’s sentences, and dress in coordinating looks), so it probably won’t help that, in the series, they play twin track stars Skylar and Jazz. The Bailey sisters were already close friends of their co-star Shahidi—last year, she described Chloe and Halle as her “BFFs”; they also share a fan in Michelle Obama—so being cast alongside her, as well as fellow Dolce & Gabbana model Luka Sabbat, was “a great feeling.” And though Chloe and Halle are now best known as musicians, they acted on screen as children growing up in Atlanta, making Grown-ish something of a return to form for both. (Indeed, as we drove to the show later that night, the sisters’ mom Courtney pulled out her phone to show me an image of Chloe, at age three, with Beyoncé, then 21, from the 2003 movie-musical Fighting Temptations, in which Chloe played a younger version of her eventual mentor’s character.)Chloe and Halle were making the most of their New York Fashion Week sojourn. In addition to the Jeremy Scott show, they stopped by a party hosted by Refinery29, where they finally met Issa Rae, the creator and star of Insecure, for the first time. They both avidly watch the series, which featured their song “Red Lights” in its first season, and it appears the admiration is mutual: On Thursday, Rae told them she was “so excited to see you guys’ acting debut,” Chloe recalled with a small gasp. “I was like, You know?”
But for all the activity in New York, by Sunday, they would return to Los Angeles to continue filming Grown-ish. The Freeform series, which is slated for premiere early next year, was just one of several projects Chloe and Halle were juggling. For example, back in Los Angeles, the sisters had the opportunity to pay homage to their mentor (and rumored fellow vegan) for her recent 36th birthday. Her mother, Tina Knowles, “wanted to do something spectacular for her daughter,” Halle said, so she recruited some of Beyoncé’s closest friends and collaborators to recreate a now-iconic image from the Lemonade visual album—Beyoncé in a wide-brimmed hat, a black dress, a bib necklace, and two thick braids. Knowles provided each of the participants—including Serena Williams, Michelle Obama, Ingrid, and even Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy as well as Chloe and Halle—with a hat, braids included. She photographed the whole thing on an iPhone.Plus, earlier in the summer, they released a new project entitled The Two of Us that they described, upon its debut, as neither album nor mixtape, and that presages a full-length album they hope to complete soon.“All of the songs were rejects we knew weren’t going to make the album, but we still kind of liked,” Chloe explained as a makeup artist blotted electric blue shadow onto her lids. “We warped them together into one long song. It was really fun to create, because it’s, like, 25 minutes long.” But their album is coming, too: “It’s like, 85, 90 percent done,” Halle explained, adding that they were hoping to begin releasing new music early next year. They write, record, and produce their own music at their home studio in Los Angeles; once in a while, Beyoncé will drop in like a fairy godmother with feedback.“She allows us to have our own mind and our own thoughts and creativity,” Chloe said. “Her main thing, she wants us to do what we want to do,” Halle added. “She’s like, ‘Let the world catch up to you. You girls’ talent is so immense, don’t dumb it down for the world.’” It’s a message they also communicate on “Simple,” one of The Two of Us’s standout songs:
“No, I’m not calling anybody out, it’s just people telling us, ‘Oh you know your stuff’s too complex for the average ear to get it. Maybe you should just be simple,’” Chloe murmurs, singsong.“We hope that one day we’ll be legends, because legends break barriers and don’t follow the rules, you know?” Halle said.Though Chloe and Halle had just met designer Jeremy Scott earlier in the day, he has long cultivated relationships with musicians: Björk was reportedly his first celebrity client, and his inner circle currently comprises Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and Madonna. The sisters slipped into their Scott-designed looks—“Oh, come on,” their mom, Courtney, cried approvingly when she saw her daughters transformed—and Chloe daubed her favorite oil, which she dubbed “the smell-good” and smells of cotton candy, onto her wrists. A last-minute change of hoop earrings for studs, and they were ready to go: The four Baileys hurried out to the car that would shepherd them downtown to Spring Studios. (Back in Los Angeles, Chloe had just passed her driving test and obtained a bright blue Mini Cooper she christened Cleo, making her her own chauffeur.)When they arrived at the show, Chloe and Halle took their seats just down the front row from Lionel Richie and Jimmy Iovine, who their mother introduced as a “legend.” They sidled up to Erika Jayne of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, of which, apparently, they are big fans, and began chatting animatedly with the reality star. The lights dimmed, and Scott’s retrospective of a show got underway, with models like Karlie Kloss, Sofia Richie, Gigi Hadid, Devon Aoki, Coco Rocha, and even Liberty Ross, the ’90s supermodel married to Iovine, making their way down the runway in Scott’s silver-sequined club kid attire. After the lights came back up and before Chloe and Hall dissolved into the crowd, they offered their final review: “It was fantastic,” Chloe said. “I loved how it shined under the lights.”“I liked all the sparkles,” her sister echoed. “Beautiful.” [s]

Muddy
Thirty minutes; The perfect amount of time to make something feel short yet agonizingly long at the same time.
Blackguard tries to keep herself busy and distracted from the wait time by tidying up the various livable rooms of Crossfire, starting with the mess hall because it had initially seemed like the best place to sit down with Sideswipe. When it dawns on her just how trashy the room is for what she intends to do though she hurries to the office-living room, cleaning there until she realizes it's just too big and not nearly private enough. Then she glances over at her berthroom, wondering if would be appropriate to invite him there since it was the most private she had available but also HER room.
Lug stretches out on the floor behind her with a great big groan and sigh, drawing her attention over to him, and her optics naturally pass over the viewing windows as she looks. As she gazes out into the stars, wondering just how and where she's going to bare her soul to Sideswipe, an idea hits her and she eagerly looks to the ceiling. "Crossfire?"
"Yes, Blackguard?"
"Can you still do the magnetic thing? You know - when you keep someone grounded to the floor or to your form if we're outside?"
"Yes." A thoughtful hum passes through the whole ship before he asks, "Are you intending to go outside, Blackguard?"
"I am. If Sideswipe's clear to go anyway. So we'll see, okay? And don't say anything to him."
"Your secret is safe with me, Blackguard."
Wily
It doesn't take him too long to make his way over. In fact, for once he's actually early, and hadn't been sidetracked or turned around. But there were a couple of reasons for that.
For starters he genuinely just enjoyed hanging out with Blackguard. So heck yeah he was gonna come over when invited!
Secondly, he was curious.
Curious about what she wanted to see him about. He had an incessant to know, and curiosity was a constant driving force that ate away at him. You can't just ask him to come over, then cryptically proceed to tell him nothing. That could have meant a plethora of things. Was something going on? Was this all code to proceed with the loose haphazard plan to bust Blackguard out of her house arrest sentence?  Was something wrong? Was it something innocuous like "hey I was bored, wanna watch a movie and eat this cool new snack I ordered?"  Maybe it was a fun surprise.
Honestly though? Regardless of the reason,  her asking was enough to summon him.
So here he is.
Arrive he does, popping in to the ship, only mildly nauseous from the bridge trip. He announces himself with a weak but cheery, "Knock knock!
Muddy
A low rumble rolls through the ship when Sideswipe materializes within the supreme and Blackguard trills at the noise; Curious as to what had Crossfire making such a noise, then excited when she realized what/who it was.
"Coming!" She makes haste for the stairs to meet him on the lower deck, eager to get things going but now also mildly concerned for his health. He didn't sound so hot a moment ago and considering the state he had been in not that long ago...
"Hey." She walks up to him with as much casualness as she can muster, kneeling down to give him a loose hug and take a quick inspection of his shoulder. "How are you? Are you okay? You sounded kind of off earlier."
Wily
Don't worry, Blackguard. It's kind of difficult to tell if people are acting a little antsy when your world just tilted sideways. But he'll be fine. He needs a moment.
"I'm fiiiiine," He says a little airily and leans heavily into the hug. Maybe she meant to keep it loose and casual, but he's going to cling a little. Because it helps keep the world from spinning. "All fixed up!" And a little motion sick but maybe if he pretended he wasn't it would go away quicker.
But even after the vertigo ebbs he doesn't let go right away. Instead he tips his helm up, and offers a cheeky grin. "Hi."
"Sooooo," He stage whispers, "Gonna tell me the secret before I actually combust? I wanna knoooow."
Muddy
"Sure, sure." If Sideswipe wants a HUG then, by god, he's getting a HUG. It's not like they're hard to give (especially with their drastic size difference) and Blackguard is always happy to give and receive those kinds of hugs. She'll be mindful of his shoulder though and keep the squeezing around it to a minimal. Everything else on the other hand? It's all getting squeezed to death and then some until he starts wiggling around. Then she'll ease up, look back at him, and hum affectionately.
"Hi." She shifts, easing back on the embrace and carefully resting her hands over his shoulders, then gets down on both knees and sits back on her legs. "So... You're... One of the best mechs I've ever known, and probably one of the best friends I've ever had." A humorless laugh escapes her and she looks at the floor a moment before forcing herself to look back at him. "And that's not really saying much because I've had some really worthless ones too. But, you're good. You're more than good. You're... You're perfect honestly. You're kind, and wonderful, and--" Air hitches in her vents and she lets out another laugh, this one genuine. It's hard to speak with all these emotions bubbling up and getting caught in her throat, so she blurts out: "Will you be my amica endura?"
Wily
They're almost optic to optic like this. Him swaying as he stands, while she kneels and puts them at a more equal standing. Their size difference is comical but the companionship is comfortable. Especially now that the last waves of vertigo have burned away. Instead that tilting sick feeling fades, and it’s replaced by curiosity, and a breezy sort of excited energy.  He’s not sure what for yet, but there’s anticipation. He’s smiling boyishly, excited by the things he might be told whatever that might be. Secrets? Something new? Was it time for plan 'jail break.’? Maybe it was nothing important at all and even that was fine. Whatever it was he was ready. He was- …
He wasn't ready for that.
First it was the nice words. Sweet words that even now were always like little surprises. He craved them the little positive reinforcements.
The positive things, and assurances... that he was good. That someone important saw him that way, despite seeing some of the worst of him. That gave his spark a squeeze.
He didn't let his thoughts linger on that too much. Instead he basked in the nice things, albeit a little confused, his grin making his cheeks hurt.
But as much as it warmed him to hear, it was... he wasn't sure what to say? So he ducked his helm, and laughed a little sheepishly. "Pffffft, you've got a weird definition of perfect. Ha...."
A pause. "You really consider me one of your best friends? Wow, I don't know what I did but go me! I mean you're pretty great your-"
And then he hears what she asks.
And then he thinks for a moment to remember what that is.
And his face does something complicated. Bemusement. Realization. A smile, because he figures it out! The smile gives way to shock as it hits him what it all means put together.
And then articulately-
-he proceeds to say nothing.
And in stunned silence he stares.
Muddy
She figured he would be like this - to a point. After he cried and submitted to her temporary grounding because of the last confession she gave to him, it was easy to anticipate a similar reaction to this confession. She didn't think he'd fall victim to a blue screen of death however and became mildly concerned when he suddenly cut himself off, giving no indication that the thought would continue or be derailed by another any time soon. Part of her even began to worry that this was a calm before a storm and rejection was looming on the horizon, but she did her best to ignore the insecure thought. She and Sides were good.
Probably.
Hopefully.
"Sides?" Tilting her helm, she rubs her hand over his good shoulder and brightens her visor. "You still with me?"
Wily
He blinks almost owlishly, the hand smoothing over his shoulder nudging some life back into him.
"Uhuh," He answers softly, with a distracted nod.  Still, even hazy as he sounds, his optics are still wide and locked on her.
It's a weird sensation. A swelling in his chest, and a knot in his throat, and like all of his systems collectively seized into uselessness on him.  It's warm, and cold, and he likes it, but he doesn't understand it and it's a lot. It's a lot, even if it's not showing that it's a lot. Not yet. The bewilderment is keeping everything at bay.
Eventually his brows knit, and a thousand things are flitting through his head, but the only thing he can snag from the chaos is-
"Why?"
The 'me' is unspoken, but hangs there.
Muddy
"Why.. what?" She mimics his question with her one, tilting her helm a few degrees more before straightening it out. "Like, why do I want to do this? Or..?"
Wily
"I...yeah? But... Why me?" He's still looking at her with that confusion in his optics. There's a fight in his head. Some creeping warm thing at war with incomprehension. It's an odd strain and maybe that's why his voice cracks in a way that's equally confusing. "Why would... why would you want this with me? I don't-"
Muddy
Relief washes over while a dagger simultaneously twists itself in her spark chamber. This wonderful, thoughtful, kind, loving, caring, fun, hilarious, and energetic mech was asking because he didn't understand why he'd qualify for such an honorable position? Clearly she needs to be a better friend - amica - to him then, so he'd understand exactly why he and he alone was the best mech she's known.
"Sideswipe." She cooes, dimming her visor to a gentle 'smile' as she cups the sides of his face, ready to whick any tears he might shed. "Why wouldn't I want to do this? Out of everyone I've ever called my amica, you're the only mech I've really felt... Good about saying it too. The only one I'd be saddened if I lost forever because it'd mean I failed SPECTACULARLY at being a worthy friend. And I would like to keep you around forever, if at all possible." She laughs, visor glowing a shade brighter. "There's literally no one else I'd want to bear my spark to either. Out of everyone, you deserve that part of me. I owe you that much, I think."
Wily
He stares at her in awe.
She thought all of that about him? But...he was chaotic. Impulsive. Naiive about some things, and too practiced in others. Practiced in not great, destructive things. To hear what she had to say so succinctly like that? It was-
It wasn't surprising though.
She had such things to him before. In snippets. In a longer sparkfelt moment. Still, to hear it now with such earnestness and warmth... it hit him square in those vulnerable things, soothing over them with the reminder that people thought he was good. Even though he was flawed.
She knew he was flawed. And still cared for him. For the all of him.
Like he cared for her. The all of her. The wry humor, the patience, the worry she showed in her own way, the exasperation, the silliness, the vulnerability and highs and lows, the give and the take-
People he cared about, cared about him too. And he knew that. Of course he did, but sometimes a reminder had a way of sneaking up on you before blindsiding you with something raw.
Affection. Wonder. Why wonder though? He knew these things didn't he? But sometimes things being spelled out-
She thought all of that of him? She deemed him that important to her?
That was kind of amazing. But it was a surprise, and not a surprise in equal measure.
Because they were friends right? Slowly, gradually, over time they got to this point. Somewhere odd, but strangely comfortable and obvious right?
"Oh," He manages to get out a watery laugh. His vision is misting but he's all grins again. A bright smile has broken across his face as the confusion is blown  away by something giddy.
He slips past the hands on his cheeks, and gives her a hug again. Because why not? How could he not? Not with this odd happy buzz coursing through his lines. The tears would just have to get free reign for a bit. "Neat. Cool. So what do I have to do? Does this mean I get to be one of your 'super best friends?'"
Muddy
Arguably, she was rushing into things - like she had done before and always seemed to do, especially with amica endurae. Jitter had earned the title from her because they were both mechs stumbling into the multiverse and wanted to have an amica to count on if they ever got lost or overwhelmed. Blackout was rewarded with the title after he had taken initiative to search for her while she was lost in the grey and took care of Rigel and Starflare in her absence. Megatron became her amica because he was always willing to act as a pillar of strength for her when disaster struck.
But then Jitter found love and ran away while Blackout became jealous and hateful, and when Megatron got busy with rebuilding Cybertron Blackguard started to wonder if it was them or her. In some cases fault could be found with them, but in all of the cases she was at fault. She rushed into everything, she declared love for them because they had helped her, and made that dependency the foundation of their relationship. It was why she started pushing Sideswipe (and others) away when Redstrike left to go to war; She didn't want to be dependent on them, to fall back into the cycle of rushing into things, and making a moment into a bigger deal than it actually was.
But Sideswipe pushed back. He insisted he was capable of helping her, of comforting her, and doing whatever she needed if she'd only ask for it first - or nothing at all if she truly wanted that. Whatever she needed, he'd provide because they were friends and that's what friends did for each other.
And she cracked.
Maybe this was another disaster in the making. Maybe she was rushing into something again. Maybe they were doomed but she didn't care. She loved him now and he loved her in return, and that was all that mattered at the moment.
"Oh." She mimics him, teasing because it was such a simple word that somehow said so much. Oh, that's why. Oh, wow, you really do care. Oh, this is really happening.
Her arms quickly wrap themselves around him again, falling back into the usual position of an all-consuming, lovingly crushing hug that she had grown use to giving him. A little extra squeeze was given as she chuckles, tickled by his adorable questions and feeling a wave of warmth spread through her frame. "Yeah, you're going to be one my super best friends. And all you have to do is stand back from me a bit, okay?"
Wily
He shakes his helm at the request, but makes no move to let go. Not at first. He allows himself to remain anchored to her for at least a good couple of minutes before he finally relents, tries to wipe his face on his shoulder (the tears just smear), and shuffles back.
Amica Endura. This isn't a title that existed where he was from, and he only learned about it recently. And maybe that unfamiliarity didn't give the words the same weight that they held elsewhere. The same kneejerk meaning.
They didn't need to.
No, the fact that they meant something meaningful to Blackguard, was enough to make it meaningful to him. It meant something to her, and was something precious from where she was from and she was willing to share that with him. That spoke volumes.
Even if titles weren't as clear to him friendship was.
Friendship was a simple yet complicated thing after all. An intricate collection of thousands of little moments and feelings, good and bad that summed together made a bond. A meaningful bond. Through thick or thin right? Like a collection of little threads that could strengthen or fray. It wasn't always easy to maintain them, but they could be added too and the resulting bonds were more than worth it. The care and love and shared experiences good and bad were worth it.
So he didn't know what to expect. He didn't know the customs, and barely remembered the title 'Amica Endura' meant a moment ago. But nevertheless, as a giddy anticipation burned through him. As the knot in his throat grew, he stood expectently and waited. Albeit a little antsy. "Like this?"
Muddy
A couple of seconds versus a couple of minutes versus a couple of hours; There's not much difference between the three beats of time in comparison to the long lasting lifespan of a Transformer. So when you've got two mechs who thrive off of physical affection, extended hugs are bound to happen without anybody noticing or complaining about them - especially in rare moments like these where trouble was put off to the side and happiness was brought to focus. Happiness, and love.
"Just like that." Blackguard assures, 'smilingly' brightly, and resettles into her knelt position before closing her optics. Drawing in a long cycle of air, she holds the breath in her system for a moment before slowly releasing it, the multiple layers of protective metal and plating on her chassis folding back as she exhaled until there was nothing - absolutely nothing - between her spark and Sideswipe.
She opens her optics then casts away her visor, looking directly at him as the light of her spark illuminates his face.
"I bid you stand in the glow of my spark that you may feel the heat of my words and know them to be true. I invite you to receive my light and in doing so becoming Amica Endura—from now until forever. For your kindness and your love of life, both your's and everyone around you. For your boundless energy and your endless humor. For your optimism and your hope." Her digits twitch and in an act of impulse, Blackguard takes Sideswipe's hands in both of hers, then squeezes them. "As you are to me, may I be to you—today, tomorrow, and always."
Wily
He's stunned.
It takes a moment for his helm to catch up with what he's seeing. He hears the mechanisms in her plating unlatch and fold back. Then there's a light washing them both out, bleaching their colors pale.
Oh.
It's the light of the all of her. And he doesn't know what to do.
Plenty of people had seen Sideswipe's spark before. Mostly during medical checks or as they peiced him back together. So for the longest time Sideswipe knew that exposing it was something that should be avoided simply from a survival perspective.
In the last few years he had learned that there could be more to it than that. He had learned the other implications. What it meant to others to show this part of you. In a variety of ways. He learned through listening, talking, and growing with a love.
Your spark was everything you were. Your core. Your soul. If some were to believed an imprint of your memories. Showing it meant you were at your most vulnerable. To expose it to someone willingly...that meant trust, right? An immense trust.
He didn't know what to expect for this, what she would do, but he hadn't expected this. So, snaps back to the present, pieces together the implications, and it makes him feel lightheaded. Bowled him right over again.
So he stands there brows knitted, optics wide as the air catches in his vent. He tries to say something, but can't. But that's fine because Blackguard is talking instead... Making a pledge of friendship that thunders in his helm, and makes his bottom lip wobble.
So he sucks in a breath, and forgets the curtain of cleanser welled in his optics because it doesn't really matter if he can see. It's really bright anyways.
"I," there for sure are tears but he's never been one to be ashamed to feel things. Why should he? Especially when those things are happy. "I... I don't know what to- You mean all that? I- what am-? Am I supposed to do something back? Like trust falls? I-"
So for a moment he fidgets and panics, and flusters about feeling suddenly on the spot because he's not sure what he should be doing with himself. But if it's a show of trust-
He finally exhales, and his own plating fold back exposing his own light. Spinning like a young star behind the crystal casing, before that shifts back too.
He suddenly looks a little unsure and teary, but still awed under it all. "Um. I'm not whole like you are, and I just have the pieces but..um... samesies?"
A pause.
"....Wow. That was lame of me. Did I just  ruin the thing?"
Muddy
In hindsight, Blackguard realizes a little too late that she should have gone over the intricacies of the ritual with him and spare him the feeling of being lost and overwhelmed in a foreign ceremony. It would have been the polite and intelligent thing to do anyway, but her eagerness to move forward with him pushed aside any and all forethought she could have had at the moment and hurdled them both into the ritual without any hesitation.
That kind of made things a little more special though too, in its own unique way. No two proposals she had previously gone through were the same, but this one was now a special little case of its own because she chose to bare her spark to him and cite the amicable chant, which she hadn't done for the others, and he returned the gesture. It was an unnecessary but wholesome move that forever made the moment special in her spark.
"No." She laughs and pulls one of her hands back to wipe at her optics a moment, whisking away the joyful tears that refused to stop leaking out despite her best efforts to keep them locked down. "No, you did great. What you said was perfect, Sides. Thank you."
And with nothing left to say, with all their love and their truths and their souls laid out, Blackguard pulls Sideswipe in for one last hug - carefully, to keep her spark from lining up with his and doing things it needn't do between them. It still reacts to the presence of another though, glowing brighter as if to reach out with its light, and burning hot in her core. She ignores the urges it feeds her and squeezes with all the strength she dare to use on the little lambo, turning to 'kiss' the top of his helm. "Thank you, Sideswipe. For everything."
Wily
The hug is more than a relief. It's an assurance that he didn't mess up. But more than that it gave him something to do with all that building excited energy. So he clings to her again, teary and laughing even though he doesn't completely understand why. But this feels important.
His crystal casing folds back over his spark, shattering the light through it's surface. And eventually chest plates follow, but even with the light of the room dimmer he's still so very bright.
He feels the press to his helm and laughs, watery as it sounds. "Thanks? I should thank you too." For not writing him off as a dumb kid. For listening. For being there.
He cuddles closer before tipping his helm up, "Sorry for improvising. So is it official? Super special friend status?"
Muddy
"We're official." Another 'kiss' is pressed to the side of his helm and Blackguard gives him one last loving squeeze before pulling away - if only to get enough space to cover up her sparkchamber without pinching him in the process. "Super special best amica friends for life. Or until you get sick of me." She hums, pulling him back in and rocking him around for a bit. "Cause unfortunately for you, I like you too much to get tired of you. So you're stuck with me forever."
Wily
He's laughing, and teary. Once her chest closes back up, as if magnitized, he falls right back against her so those hugs can resume. He doesn't want to let go. Not yet, when he feels flooded by that affection he so desperately craves. "Usually *sniff* I'm the one saying that. So I guess that means you're stuck with me until you get sick of me too."
And you know? He was fine with that. For the long haul, if it meant more moments that felt like this

Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Review
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG: VIDEO GAME BASED MOVIE IS FORMULAIC BUT OFFERS PLENTY OF FAST-PACED FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY AS WELL AS LONGTIME FANS!
By Nico Beland
Movie Review: *** out of 4
Tumblr media
The world’s fastest hedgehog hits the big screen in Sonic the Hedgehog
PARAMOUNT PICTURES AND SEGA
The blue blur (or Blue Devil as the movie calls him) makes his big screen debut in Sonic the Hedgehog, based on the beloved Sega video game franchise of the same name. Believe it or not out of all the video game franchises, my favorite is and always will be Sonic the Hedgehog and have been a proud supporter of the hedgehog since childhood.
Granted, it wasn’t until after Sega became a third-party developer for consoles like PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo when I became a fan of the blue hedgehog, but ever since I got my hands on the Nintendo GameCube port of Sonic Adventure 2 as a kid, my Sonic fandom was pretty much instant. I’ve played many of the video games both old and new, watched all the cartoons, read the comic books published by Archie Comics at the time, and I owned several action figures, plushies, and other Sonic merchandise throughout my childhood…in fact I still have most of those even to this day.
I’ve been clamoring for a Sonic the Hedgehog theatrical movie for years despite video game film adaptations usually being critical and/or box-office poison. But given the popularity of Sonic especially during the 90s when he was rivaling Nintendo’s Mario franchise who already had a theatrical film released in 1993, I’d assume one would have been made back then or at the very least in the early-late 2000s when Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, and Sonic Heroes as well as the hit Saturday morning anime series, Sonic X were released, I was so eager for a Sonic movie that a couple of friends and I got together and made movies of our own when we were kids (They sucked BTW!).
After years of waiting and Sonic making a few big screen appearances prior in Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph movies and Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, the beloved hedgehog finally gets a movie of his own which leads us to today. The film is directed by newcomer Jeff Fowler in his directorial debut, produced by Neal H. Moritz (Fast & Furious franchise, XXX, 21/22 Jump Street), and executive produced by Tim Miller (Deadpool, Terminator: Dark Fate) and is a live-action/animated hybrid (Yep, just like Alvin and the Chipmunks and The Smurfs), which had me very worried when it was announced back in 2014 and was even more worried and disgusted when the first trailer came out last year which had an absolutely atrocious design for Sonic, fortunately they fixed it.
So, how does Sonic’s first movie hold up? Honestly, while I can’t call it the Sonic movie I wanted as a child, I had a fun time with it. It isn’t a perfect representation of its source material and the plot is pretty generic, but the charm of the film’s leads, humor, and subtle references to the games that inspired it are enough for me to overlook that flaw.
The film follows Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz-Parks and Recreation, The Other Guys, The Walk), blue anthropomorphic talking hedgehog from another dimension with extraordinary speed who travels to Earth to escape from those who want to capture him and harness his power. However, when he accidentally causes a power outage while hiding out in the town of Green Hills (Get it?), Sonic is targeted by the government and the tyrannical mad scientist, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey-Ace Ventura 1 and 2, The Mask, The Truman Show) who plots to use Sonic’s power for world domination.
This forces Sonic to team up with Green Hills sheriff, Tom Wachowski (James Marsden-X-Men franchise, Enchanted, Westworld) who agrees to help Sonic on his adventure to find his missing bag of magical rings that have the power to get him home. Of course, while getting into all sorts of trouble along the way.             The film also stars Tika Sumpter (Ride Along 1 and 2, Get On Up, Southside with You) as Tom’s wife Maddie, Adam Pally (Happy Endings, The Mindy Project, Iron Man 3) as Wade Whipple, and Neal McDonough (Star Trek: First Contact, Band of Brothers, Justified) as Major Bennington.
Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog probably isn’t the movie longtime fans wanted, but it still manages to be an entertaining and fun adaptation in its own right. It’s easily one of the best films based on a video game alongside Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and The Angry Birds Movie 2 and shows that we’ve come a long way since the dark days of Uwe Boll’s directing career.
As mentioned before, the plot is nothing special and rehashed from other kids’ movies however what sets this apart from things like The Smurfs or Masters of the Universe is that Sonic and Tom do have a strong chemistry together. It’s amusing to see them interact with each other on their road trip, cracking jokes, getting into trouble, and over the course of the film they learn more about one another thus making you care more for them over ANY Smurf or Chipmunk.
While there are a few jokes that don’t quite stick the landing, the humor for the most part not only made me laugh but there were moments in this movie where I laughed hard. Whether the film was poking fun at the entire Sonicfranchise, a particular running sequence that’s obviously a reference to the Quicksilver scenes from the X-Men movies, or Sonic breaking the fourth wall similar to Deadpool, I was laughing while also admiring how clever some of these jokes are, and let’s not forget Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, but we’ll get to him momentarily.
The redesigned Sonic is a lot better than what we could have gotten, he doesn’t have those ugly small eyes, questionable muscular arms and legs, or the terrifying human teeth anymore. Now, his appearance is more faithful to the source material recreating the hedgehog’s cartoony nature but is different enough to stand out from the rest of the character’s previous designs and be its own unique creation, this is a really good design for Sonic and had the filmmakers went with their original version, this movie would have crashed and burned even harder than Sonic ’06.
Besides Sonic being more appealing to look at now, he’s also just as entertaining to listen to, Ben Schwartz while he’s far from being a replacement for Roger Craig Smith, Ryan Drummond, Jason Griffith, or even Jaleel White, does a solid job providing Sonic’s voice and captures the cocky, arrogant, but good-natured attitude Sonic is known for having. He actually almost sounds like Ryan Drummond’s Sonic voice without sounding like a cheap impersonation.             Moving on to Sonic’s new friend that doesn’t have two tails, James Marsden as Tom, his performance is decent even though he doesn’t quite make as big an impression as Ben Schwartz’ Sonic and especially Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik. With that said, he gets some funny lines once in a while and as mentioned before has good chemistry with Sonic, so yeah, believe it or not James Marsden was partnered up with another CG animated character and this time came out with his dignity unlike his performance in Hop.
Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik owns every scene that he’s in, he’s no Mike Pollock and is a radically different Robotnik than from the games, but Carrey’s energetic and wildly animated personality shines through and gives a million percent whenever the crazy evil genius is on-screen. He’s certainly a lot better than Dennis Hopper as Koopa from the Super Mario Bros. movie.
Hopefully, this movie will be a hit during its theatrical run because I’d love to see a sequel especially if it introduced other Sonic characters like Tails, Knuckles, or even Shadow. Don’t make this like the recent Power Rangers movie, I need my big screen version of those characters!
Whether a fan, newcomer, or just looking for something fun to take the kids to, Sonic the Hedgehog should make everyone happy. It’s not perfect but it has enough action, wit, and charm to make it worth checking out. You’ll be “Up, Over, and Gone” before you know it.

Switching Lanes With St. Vincent
By Molly Young
January 22, 2019
Tumblr media
Jacket (men’s), $4,900, pants (men’s), $2,300, by Dior / Men shoes, by Christian Louboutin / Rings (throughout) by Cartier
On a cold recent night in Brooklyn, St. Vincent appeared onstage in a Saint Laurent smoking jacket to much clapping and hooting, gave the crowd a deadpan look, and said, “Without being reductive, I'd like to say that we haven't actually done anything yet.” Pause. “So let's do something.”
She launched into a cover of Lou Reed's “Perfect Day”: an arty torch-song version that made you really wonder whom she was thinking about when she sang it. This was the elusive chanteuse version of St. Vincent, at least 80 percent leg, with slicked-back hair and pale, pale skin. She belted, sipped from a tumbler of tequila (“Oh, Christ on a cracker, that's strong”), executed little feints and pounces, flung the mic cord away from herself like a filthy sock, and spat on the stage a bunch of times. Nine parts Judy Garland, one part GG Allin.
If the Garland-Allin combination suggests that St. Vincent is an acquired taste, she's one that has been acquired by a wide range of fans. The crowd in Brooklyn included young women with Haircuts in pastel fur and guys with beards of widely varying intentionality. There was a woman of at least 90 years and a Hasidic guy in a tall hat, which was too bad for whoever sat behind him. There were models, full nuclear families, and even a solitary frat bro. St. Vincent brings people together.
If you chart the career of Annie Clark, which is St. Vincent's civilian name, you will see what start-up founders and venture capitalists call “hockey-stick growth.” That is, a line that moves steadily in a northeast direction until it hits an “inflection point” and shoots steeply upward. It's called hockey-stick growth because…it looks like a hockey stick.

Dress, by Balmain
The toe of the stick starts with Marry Me, Clark's debut solo album, which came out a decade ago and established a few things that would become essential St. Vincent traits: her ability to play a zillion instruments (she's credited on the album with everything from dulcimer to vibraphone), her highbrow streak (Shakespeare citations), her goofy streak (“Marry me!” is an Arrested Development bit), and her oceanic library of musical references (Kate Bush, Steve Reich, uh…D'Angelo!). The blade of the stick is her next four albums, one of them a collaboration with David Byrne, all of them confirming her presence as an enigma of indie pop and a guitar genius. The stick of the stick took a non-musical detour in 2016, when Clark was photographed canoodling with (now ex-) girlfriend Cara Delevingne at Taylor Swift's mansion, followed a few months later by pictures of Clark holding hands with Kristen Stewart. That brought her to the realm of mainstream paparazzi-pictures-in-the-Daily-Mail celebrity. Finally, the top of the stick is Masseduction, the 2017 album she co-produced with Jack Antonoff, which revealed St. Vincent to be not only experimental and beguiling but capable of turning out incorrigible bangers.
Masseduction made the case that Clark could be as much a pop star as someone like Sia or Nicki Minaj—a performer whose idiosyncrasies didn't have to be tamped down for mainstream success but could actually be amplified. The artist Bruce Nauman once said he made work that was like “going up the stairs in the dark and either having an extra stair that you didn't expect or not having one that you thought was going to be there.” The idea applies to Masseduction: Into the familiar form of a pop song Clark introduces surprising missteps, unexpected additions and subtractions. The album reached No. 10 on the Billboard 200. The David Bowie comparisons got louder.
This past fall, she released MassEducation (not quite the same title; note the addition of the letter a), which turned a dozen of the tracks into stripped-down piano songs. Although technically off duty after being on tour for nearly all of 2018, Clark has been performing the reduced songs here and there in small venues with her collaborator, the composer and pianist Thomas Bartlett. Whereas the Masseduction tour involved a lot of latex, neon, choreographed sex-robot dance moves, and LED screens, these recent shows have been comparatively austere. When she performed in Brooklyn, the stage was empty, aside from a piano and a side table. There were blue lights, a little piped-in fog for atmosphere, and that was it. It looked like an early-'90s magazine ad for premium liquor: art-directed, yes, but not to the degree that it Pinterested itself.

The performance was similarly informal. Midway through one song, Clark forgot the lyrics and halted. “It takes a different energy to be performing [than] to sit in your sweatpants watching Babylon Berlin,” she said. “Wherever I am, I completely forget the past, and I'm like. ‘This is now.’ And sometimes this means forgetting song lyrics. So, if you will…tell me what the second fucking verse is.”
Clark has only a decade in the public eye behind her, but she's accomplished a good amount of shape-shifting. An openness to the full range of human expression, in fact, is kind of a requirement for being a St. Vincent fan. This is a person who has appeared in the front row at Chanel and also a person who played a gig dressed as a toilet, a person profiled in Vogue and on the cover of Guitar World.
The day before her Brooklyn show, I sat with Clark to find out what it's like to be utterly unstructured, time-wise, after a long stretch of knowing a year in advance that she had to be in, like, Denmark on July 4 and couldn't make plans with friends.
“I've been off tour now for three weeks,” she said. “When I say ‘off,’ I mean I didn't have to travel.”
This doesn't mean she hasn't traveled—she went to L.A. to get in the studio with Sleater-Kinney and also hopped down to Texas, where she grew up—just that she hasn't been contractually obligated to travel. What else did she do on her mini-vacation?
“I had the best weekend last weekend. I woke up and did hot Pilates, and then I got a bunch of new modular synths, and I set 'em up, and I spent ten hours with modular synths. Plugging things in. What happens when I do this? I'm unburdened by a full understanding of what's going on, so I'm very willing to experiment.”

Like a child?
“Exactly. Did you ever get those electronics kits as a kid for like 20 bucks from RadioShack? Where you connect this wire to that one and a light bulb turns on? It's very much like that.”
There's an element of chaos, she said, that makes synth noodling a neat way to stumble on melodies that she might not have consciously assembled. She played with the synths by herself all day. “I don't stop, necessarily,” she said, reflecting on what the idea of “vacation” means to someone for whom “job” and “things I love to do” happen to overlap more or less exactly. “I just get to do other things that are really fun. I'm in control of my time.” She had plans to see a show at the New Museum, read books, play music and see movies alone, always sitting on the aisle so she could make a quick escape if necessary. But she will probably keep working. St. Vincent doesn't have hobbies.
When it manifests in a person, this synergy between life and work is an almost physically perceptible quality, like having brown eyes or one leg or being beautiful. Like beauty, it's a result of luck, and a quality that can invoke total despair in people who aren't themselves allotted it. This isn't to say that Clark's career is a stroke of unearned fortune but that her skills and character and era and influences have collided into a perfect storm of realized talent. And to have talent and realize that talent and then be beloved by thousands for exactly the thing that is most special about you: Is there anything a person could possibly want more? Is this why Annie Clark glows? Or is it because she's super pale? Or was it because there was a sound coming through the window where we sat that sounded thrillingly familiar?
“Is Amy Sedaris running by?” Clark asked, her spine straightening. A man with a boom mic was visible on the sidewalk outside. Another guy in a baseball cap issued instructions to someone beyond the window. Someone said “Action!” and a figure in vampire makeup and a clown wig streaked across the sidewalk. Someone said “Cut!” and Clark zipped over for a look. It was, in fact, Amy Sedaris, her clown wig bobbing in the 44-degree breeze. The mic operator was gagging with laughter. It seemed like a good omen, this sighting, like the New York City version of Groundhog Day: If an Amy Sedaris streaks across your sight line in vampire makeup, spring will arrive early.

Another thing Clark does when off tour is absorb all the input that she misses when she's locked into performance mode. On a Monday afternoon, she met artist Lisa Yuskavage at an exhibition of her paintings at the David Zwirner gallery in Chelsea. Yuskavage was part of a mini-boom of figurative painting in the '90s, turning out portraits of Penthouse centerfolds and giant-jugged babes with Rembrandt-esque skill. It made sense that Clark wanted to meet her: Both women make art about the inner lives of female figures, both are sorcerers of technique, both are theatrical but introspective, both have incendiary style. The gallery was a white cube, skylit, with paintings around the perimeter. Yuskavage and Clark wandered through at a pace exclusive to walking tours of cultural spaces, which is to say a few steps every 10 to 15 seconds with pauses between for the proper amount of motionless appreciation.
The paintings were small, all about the size of a human head, and featured a lot of nipples, tufted pudenda, tan lines, majestic asses, and protruding tongues. “I like the idea of possessing something by painting it,” Yuskavage said. “That's the way I understand the world. Like a dog licking something.”
Clark looked at the works with the expression people make when they're meditating. She was wearing elfin boots, black pants, and a shirt with a print that I can only describe as “funky”—“funky” being an adjective that looks good on very few people, St. Vincent being one of them—and sipped from a cup of espresso furnished by a gallery minion. After she finished the drink, there was a moment when she looked blankly at the saucer, unsure what to do with it, and then stuck it in the breast pocket of her funky shirt for the rest of the tour.
A painting called Sweetpuss featured a bubble-butted blonde in beaded panties with nipples so upwardly erect they actually resembled little boners. Yuskavage based the underwear on a pair of real underwear that she'd constructed herself from colored balls and string. “I've got the beaded panties if you ever need 'em,” she said to Clark. “They might fit you. They're tiny.”

“I'm picturing you going to the Garment District,” Clark said.
“There was a lot of going to the Garment District.”
As they completed their lap around the white cube, Clark interjected with questions—what year was this? were you considering getting into film? how long did these sittings take? what does “mise-en-scène” mean?—but mainly listened. And she is a good listener: an inquisitive head tilter, an encouraging nodder, a non-fidgeter, a maker of eye contact. She found analogues between painting and music. When Yuskavage mourned the death of lead white paint (due to its poisonous qualities, although, as the artist pointed out, “It's not that big a deal to not get lead poisoning; just don't eat the paint”), Clark compared it to recording's transition from tape to digital.
“Back in the day, if you wanted to hear something really reverberant”—she clapped; it reverberated—“you'd have to be in a room like this and record it, or make a reverb chamber,” Clark said. “Now we have digital plug-ins where you can say, ‘Oh, I want the acoustic resonance of the Sistine Chapel.’ Great. Somebody's gone and sampled that and created an algorithm that sounds like you're in the Sistine Chapel.”
Lately, she said, she's been way more into devices that betray their imperfections. That are slightly out of tune, or capable of messing up, or less forgiving of human intervention. “Air moving through a room,” Clark said. “That's what's interesting to me.”
They kept pacing. The paintings on the wall evolved. Conversation turned to what happens when you grow as an artist and people respond by flipping out.
“I always find it interesting when someone wants you to go back to ‘when you were good,’ ” Yuskavage said. “This is why we liked you.”
“I can't think of anybody where I go, ‘What's great about that artist is their consistency, ” Clark said. “Anything that stays the same for too long dies. It fails to capture people's imagination.”

They were identifying a problem with fans, of course, not with themselves. It was an implicit identification, because performers aren't permitted to critique their audiences, and it was definitely the artistic equivalent of a First World problem—an issue that arises only when you're so resplendent with talent that you not only nail something enough to attract adoration but nail it hard enough to get personally bored and move on—but it was still valid. They were talking about the kind of fan who clings to a specific tree when he or she could be roaming through a whole forest. In St. Vincent's case, a forest of prog-rock thickets and jazzy roots and orchestral brambles and mournful-ballad underlayers, all of it sprouting and molting under a prodigious pop canopy. They were talking about the strange phenomenon of people getting mad at you for surprising them. Even if the surprise is great.

The M/M Shipping Thing: Misogyny, the Male Gaze, and Feminist and Queer Representation
Follow up post to this one, here. Read this to see my thoughts on the importance of allowing women to see men through a lens where male sexuality is something to be celebrated, not feared. Seems like a lot of people can relate to this, and I just love talking about it so have some more of my thoughts.
First of all, it’s a numbers game…
Going off of this point by @colt-kun which I’ve copied and pasted here. This gives a great overview of a purely statistical analysis of why m/m ships are more common.
“There’s also the sheer numbers to take into account.
Take the first Avengers movie as an example (because frankly its one of the few recent blockbusters with two female speaking roles). Two females, Black Widow and Maria. Then eight males, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Hulk, Loki, Fury, Coulson.
Not counting polyships/selfships for ease of math, and using the characters cisgender identities bc that is what they are largely seen as (no disrespect meant to any trans/nb interpretations)
Possible f/m ships: 16 (35.5%) Possible f/f ships: 1 (2.2%) Possible m/m ships: 28 (62.2%)
That’s not even accounting for screentime, character chemistry, interaction times, etc. thats just the NUMBERS.
When there’s a large disparity in character gender then yeah, you’re going to see a heavy inclination to m/m ships because that’s really ALL THATS POSSIBLE. The fans have a natural desire for more story and romances, they want to world build and AU. We’ve done that since stories were first told.
So of COURSE you’re going to see a lot of women - of all sexual orientations - leaning towards m/m pairings because when there’s only potatoes at the buffet… you eat the potatoes. Think of all the shows an movies with only one female character in a cast of men. Is it really difficult to see WHY there’s a lot of m/m ships there?”
Tumblr media
Mainstream media is male-centered and male-dominated.
Going beyond just the numbers the fact is that in the majority of popular films and TV shows many of the female characters aren’t well-rounded or on screen as much as most of the men. There is a tendency for women to be the secondary characters or maybe to have one main female character. This makes it hard to really relate to and invest in a lot of the female characters out there. Not that people don’t, but it’s not going to attract a huge following.
Take Supernatural (low hanging fruit I know) where even if there are a large number of women that appear throughout the series, there aren’t many that stick around(and let’s not even go there with all of the deaths and how sexist that is right now ha)or interact with each other in a way that would lead to a lot of shipping. Even in my lovely Hannibal fandom, the Marlana ship which people love and people write for just isn’t going to have as much of a following just based on the fact that they aren’t the main characters. And Marlana is a good example of a w/w ship where they aren’t objectified, don’t die, and still it’s a secondary focus. There obviously are some exceptions, but they are few and far between.
Tumblr media
The Male Gaze:
Also, women (and any gender that isn’t cismale) are trained to see film through the male perspective. Film and TV is usually shot with the male gaze, so women learn to see through this lens. We grow up learning to empathize and put ourselves in the shoes of male protagonists because otherwise we would have very little media to enjoy. I think this is part of why it’s natural for women to ship m/m ships. I also think that shipping men and sexualizing them can be a subversion of the male gaze and is an empowering way to flip that script for many women.
We could go into a whole other discussion on internalized misogyny and patriarchal culture and why there are some not so great reasons women might gravitate towards m/m ships, but I think it’s important to see all the reasons why this is and to not demonize women for doing something that makes sense both statistically, sociologically, and psychologically, etc.
Men rarely have to put themselves in the shoes of women in film. So, I do feel like there is a difference between straight dudes watching lesbian porn and women who thoughtfully engage in a m/m ship. You can’t ignore the gender politics at play and how these factors interact. In an ideal world, people of all genders and sexualities could enjoy bodies without all the baggage of sexism and homophobia, but sadly that’s not our world.
Tumblr media
This famous, awesome thread really sums it up:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Disclaimer:
I do think there are women who fetishize and act awful when it comes to m/m ships. (I also realize there are lots of other intersections at work in film such as race and class that I’m not really addressing.) Especially those who don’t do any of the emotional or intellectual work around the history of the queer community and who don’t engage in activism of that sort. Plus, if you are a straight woman who loves and supports gay male ships but you’re grossed out by queer women or you’re objectifying actual queer men in your life, it’s time to check yourself and stop that.
Tumblr media
Homoerotic Subtext:
Also, women, and queer people across the board, have been trained to read subtextual clues like pros. Women are especially adept at reading into stories since they are so rarely represented in positive ways. Queer people do this, too. It makes sense that women, especially queer women, would pick up on interactions that have homoerotic subtext easily. And, since film is male dominated, it is much more likely the subtext will be between two men. Also, let’s just face it, the history of film is male centered and homo eroticism is a big part of it, and it’s usually about good looking white dudes. The LGBT community itself still has a long way to go in portraying and magnifying people of all genders and sexualities more equally.
Tumblr media
The weight of the male gaze on queer women.
There’s also the problem of objectification. I like to write, read, and see fan art about w/w ships, but there’s always that weight of feeling like you’re objectifying women all over again and feeling unsure about it. Honestly, I think that many of us in fandom should probably do what we can to write more femslash and write original queer female characters, but there are a lot of reasons why these ships aren’t as popular as m/m ships. There’s a lot of baggage around portraying women and female sexuality. And lesbian sex is so objectified that it can be a minefield to navigate even when(once in a blue moon) a good f/f ship opportunity comes along. But, even with that, there are some thriving ships such as Korrasami and Clexa(oh look another queer woman is dead. This is why we can’t have nice things). Queer women do celebrate and create fandom around good w/w ships when we get the chance.
Tumblr media
Misogyny and Mocking Fandom:
Lastly, and I’ve read lots on this before so this is just my take, people tend to demonize fandom and m/m shipping because it is something that is driven by women, mainly made by women, and made mostly for other women (and nonbinary folks, too).
Even in the LGBT+ community, there is a lot of misogyny. Cis gay white men are the face of that movement, and they often don’t realize the sexism that is still alive and well in the community. It’s easy for people to laugh at, mock, and critique shipping because it is very much a space not created by men. I also think it’s easy for some privileged gay men to point out perceived injustice but not realize the sexism inherent in what they are saying.
Fandom is very much a place where women explore their sexuality and can enjoy seeing men being acted upon, not just being the actors. It’s no surprise that women are intrigued by the sexual politics of queer men given the messages about being penetrated and being acted on that women get all the time. Analyzing sexual dynamics through a m/m relationship makes a lot of sense psychologically as it isn’t tied to a male/female gender dynamic in the same way. I think it’s a very natural way for women to see sexuality , and things like dominance and submission, as a personal preference and the beauty and excitement of different ways of expressing sexuality.
People like to enjoy women’s work while also mocking it.
Also, I know many queer men who enjoy m/m smut, fan art, etc. from fandoms where I’m sure that 90 percent of the work is being produced by people who aren’t cisgay men, and are very likely people who identify as women. So, while I know that some queer men are cool with it and some aren’t cool with it, I think it’s important to keep in mind that many of them are benefiting and enjoying from the work that female driven fandom is creating.
Tumblr media
In conclusion:
Once again, it’s important to not be a homophobic, fetishizing, clueless person. I see instances of problematic behavior and thinking among women who ship men together often, and it’s a problem and needs to be called out when it happens. But, for all that is holy, stop acting like all of these women are gross, homophobic fetishizers and look at all the reasons why m/m shipping is such a phenomenon. I always think being self-critical and analytical is important. It’s also good to listen to different perspectives because these are intersectional issues with valid discussions to be had.
Sorry this was so long. I really could go on and on, and this is what happens when I miss writing feminist/queer theory papers. ;)

Twitter responds to Will Smith's Genie outfit
The time of Disney live-activity changes has arrived, thus far the Mouse House has neglected to disillusion. 2015's Cinderella got the ball coming in style, and Jon Favreau's widely praised form of The Jungle Book was one of the motion picture occasions of 2016. The 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast didn't score very as profoundly with faultfinders, yet regardless it figured out how to pull in an astounding $1.2 billion at the overall film industry. The studio has three big real to life revamps hitting theaters in 2019, however while The Lion King continues to create buzz, individuals are getting stressed about Aladdin — and the primary authority photographs (discharged by means of Entertainment Weekly) have done little to facilitate those worries.
The greatest staying point for most fans is by all accounts the way that Will Smith is playing the Genie, a character deified by the late, incredible Robin Williams. Smith told EW that his performance would be "a praise" to Williams yet would contrast to some degree as far as melodic style. "There hasn't been a great deal of that hip-bounce season in Disney history," he called attention to. We get that they're attempting to go for an all new interpretation of the Genie, yet for what reason would he say he isn't blue? Also, what's happening with that haircut? Smith addressed the principal question (He'll be a blue, CGI Genie more often than not), yet he hasn't reacted to the assault of tweets about his character's ensemble. Here's a gathering of the best Twitter responses.
Gathering the Sinbad we had always wanted
Performing artist and expert wrestler RJ Skinner (better known by his ring name RJ City) reignited a well established discussion when he saw Will Smith's Genie ensemble — one that includes '90s parody star Sinbad. An age of children grew up trusting that Sinbad (genuine name David Adkins) had featured as a genie in a motion picture called Shazaam, however stop and think for a minute — that film never at any point existed. As per Snopes, the "Sinbad-genie wonder" is a prime case of the Mandela Effect, which is "a casual term for a group false memory."
Some quite persuading phony VHS covers have been circled by those attempting to sustain the legend, however Sinbad has dependably precluded the presence from securing such a film. He accuses this for the wild creative ability of children who experienced childhood during the '90s, yet RJ City offered an alternate clarification: "Recollect that imaginary world s*** when we thought Sinbad featured in a genie film?" he tweeted. "Turns out we were really thinking about a timetable later on with Will Smith." We figure he could be on to something here.
Twitter goes on the Shaq assault
It's conceivable that one reason individuals trust they recall a Sinbad motion picture named Shazaam is due to the also titled Kazaam, as indicated by Snopes. For those of you sufficiently fortunate to have maintained a strategic distance from 1996's Kazaam every one of these years, it stars ball pro turned on-screen character Shaquille O'Neal as a rapping genie who shows up from an enchantment boombox to allow a kid named Max three wishes. On the off chance that that sounds strange, that is on the grounds that it is.
Kazaam has a fairly telling 6 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, whose faultfinders moaned about the way that "Shaq's overwhelming magnetism is smothered through repetition filmmaking and a dull story." The motion picture has really been canceled out for tearing various plot focuses from Disney's 1992 animated Aladdin, however for some, O'Neal's slump has turned into a faction classic —Erik Lonnquist included. "I'm sad, Will Smith, however you can never supplant the world's most noteworthy no frills motion picture genie," the Esports caster tweeted. "It's an acts of futility."
That haircut may complete him
Marlow Stern, Senior Entertainment Editor at the Daily Beast, was one of various columnists who tweeted about the primary authority pictures of Will Smith in his Genie ensemble, yet as opposed to scrutinizing his throwing or the way that he wasn't blue, Stern simply mentioned an insightful objective fact. "Will Smith's Genie in Aladdin got the Goro haircut from Mortal Kombat," he tweeted, and he's not off-base.
Things being what they are, Smith's Genie isn't the first to take motivation from Goro, the four-outfitted Shokan warrior infamous for his ruthlessness. Movie producer Gabriel Barreto rushed to call attention to that pop star Ariana Grande has additionally been shaking the Goro look. "One encouraged me adore, one showed me tolerance, one instructed me torment," Barreto stated, tweeting a picture of Goro, Grande, and Smith one next to the other for examination. We'll give you a chance to choose who wore it better.
In West Philadelphia, brought up...
On the off chance that there was exclusive you could ensure would bounce in on the Will Smith Genie banter, it's Dave Itzkoff, a culture journalist at The New York Times. At the point when he's not expounding on movies, he takes a shot at books, and his latest discharge was entitled Robin, a life story of Robin Williams. Itzkoff is "a brazen fan" of the late comic, so it was an inescapable result he'd have a comment about Smith's refreshed variant of the Genie.
Rather than attacking the principal pictures of Smith in character, Itzkoff offered a basic (though crazy) arrangement. "It's not very late to rescue this" he inscribed an image of Smith's Genie, however instead of that superbly pruned whiskers is Gritty, the absolutely unpleasant mascot of the Philadelphia Flyers. As we as a whole know, the Fresh Prince was brought up in West Philadelphia, yet by one way or another we can't see Disney going for this late expansion to his Genie ensemble.
Fence your wagers, people!
In the event that you're British and you're a gamer, you've presumably gone over the name Chris Scullion previously. The veteran computer games writer carried out his specialty in the Official Nintendo Magazine at one phase and has additionally composed for CVG, the longest-running British gaming distribution ever. Tragically, the two mags never again exist, yet Scullion still offers his master sentiments by means of his own website, Tired Old Hack. He's likewise dynamic on Twitter, where he joined the discussion over Smith's new Genie ensemble by offering a strange option.
"I see many individuals are troubled that Will Smith's Genie character isn't blue in that EW Aladdin cover," Scullion tweeted. "Try not to stress, yer man Scullion's figured out how to take out two targets with one shot." oneself broadcasted hack concocted an answer just somebody who grew up fixating on computer games during the '90s could invoke — Will Smith's Genie's head on Sonic the Hedgehog's body.
Jada: We have to talk
Saeed Jones is the co-host of the BuzzFeed demonstrate AM2DM and the writer of Prelude to Bruise, an accumulation of ballads that won the 2015 Stonewall Book Award. "In his introduction accumulation, Jones has created a fever dream, something much the same as enchantment," Publishers Weekly said in its survey (by means of Coffee House Press). That sounds exquisite, however when Jones tolled in on the Genie banter, there was nothing especially beautiful about his remark, however he raised a decent point.
"What could Will Smith perhaps have done to merit this?" Jones tweeted. "Jada is going to need to complete an entire scene of Read Table Talk about this hair piece." What Jones intended to state was Red Table Talk, which is the name of Jada Pinkett Smith's Facebook Watch arrangement. Will's significant other has been dishing some truly succulent prattle in late scenes, notwithstanding opening up about her association with previous NBA star Grant Hill, thinking back to the '90s. Who knows, perhaps we'll get the chance to hear Jada's supposition on her hubby's new ensemble.
Doh! Smith is inclining for the wrong reasons
Kyle Cardine is a maker on AM2DM, the BuzzFeed indicate co-facilitated by Saeed Jones. Like Jones, Cardine really wanted to ring in after the main authority pictures of Will Smith as the Genie dropped, however as opposed to tackling the performing artist he chose to jab fun at the web's response to those pictures. "Twitter toward the beginning of today," he stated, tweeting another adaptation of a well known Homer Simpson meme used to pass on cluelessness about a major occasion on the web. In this example, the leaders of the considerable number of individuals around Homer in the bar have been supplanted by that of Smith's Genie.
This was the second time Smith had been made the subject of online criticism in the same number of weeks. Underneath Cardine's tweet, his devotees rushed to raise the debacle that was YouTube Rewind 2018, in which Smith had an unmistakable influence in. The on-screen character's contribution caused a remarkable blend inside the YouTube people group, whose individuals rushed to transfer recordings deriding the A-lister.
Huge Willy reacts
At the point when Smith shared the Entertainment Weekly cover with his Instagram supporters, he probably known about the kickback that was working over on Twitter. While trying to enduring the ship, the performing artist consoled fans that his Genie will undoubtedly be blue, generally. "Check me rockin' the best bunch braid vibes," he inscribed the photograph. "Furthermore, indeed, I'm going to be BLUE! This is the way the Genie is in human/mask shape. My character will be CGI the greater part of the film." However, when the EW images dropped, a lot of individuals were uninformed this was the Genie masked as a human, and one displeased Disney fan volunteered make the Genie blue himself.
Photoshop wizard and mainstream fan artist BossLogic made the fundamental acclimations to the photograph before sharing it on Instagram, where ComicBook.com noticed it. The production depicted the blue Smith Genie (finish with inky bruised eyes and pointy ears) as "somewhat alarming," and that essentially gets the job done perfectly. How about we trust the last form isn't as nightmarish as this.
You realize it's awful when Star Wars is in the blend
Erik Kain is a PC diversion and TV creator right currently completing his claim to fame at Forbes. In the wake of seeing the chief authority pictures from the best in class nitty gritty Aladdin, Kain said that doing "Aladdin without Robin Williams is to some degree like Solo without Harrison Ford." He made this in a tweet, yet it was moreover the component of a feeling piece he composed for Forbes. In it, he fights that Disney genuinely had no genuine alternative but to take an exceptionally astounding edge with the Genie character in light of the fact that the brilliance of Robin Williams' execution couldn't in any capacity, shape or frame be reproduced.
"There wasn't such a wide bay between vivified Belle and genuine to life Emma Watson," Kain expressed, referencing Disney's 2017 genuine re-try of Beauty and the Beast. "They're one of a kind yet they're less phenomenal. Clearly, that is the universally useful in tossing Will Smith instead of someone more Williams-like, if there is such a person. He's adequately particular that we can recognize him as another Genie all around."
We needed for joke, and we got it
Performing artist Joshua Malina is the man who destroyed The West Wing. (Those are his words, not our own.) In his Twitter bio, Malina jokes about the way that a few people appear to consider him in charge of the destruction of the powerhouse political show. His character, Will Bailey, was presented in Season 4, similarly as fan most loved Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe) was en route out. Malina can chuckle at the thought that he demolished the show, and he apparently thinks Will Smith is bound for a comparable destiny with Aladdin.
In the wake of seeing the main authority pictures of Smith in outfit as the Genie, Malina conveyed a tweet suggesting that his contribution will destroy the film. "I saw 'Will Smith' slanting and my heart dropped!" Malina said. "For a second I thought he would play Genie in a real life adaptation of Aladdin." Other Twitter clients went to Smith's barrier, bringing up that individuals likewise thought Heath Ledger would demolish the Joker before he turned in an Oscar-winning execution in 2008's The Dark Knight.
Resolute fans are staying up for the Fresh Genie
Sean O'Donnell portrays himself as a performer, artist, and picture taker in his Twitter bio, yet he forgot one imperative job: He might be Will Smith's main protector. O'Donnell (who has in excess of 65,000 endorsers on YouTube, where he's best known for his coordinated efforts with Jordan Doww) didn't favor of the manner in which Smith and his fairly surprising Genie get-up were being ridiculed on Twitter, so he hopped to the performing artist's guard. Addressing his Twitter adherents, O'Donnell asked individuals to quit groaning about the disputable Genie outfit and simply get behind Big Willy.
"Everybody tearing separated what Genie looks like in the real life Aladdin however I'll confide in Will Smith till the day I pass on so I'll shake with it," he tweeted. Smith's vocation has been on a descending slide for various years (Digital Spy renamed him the not-so-crisp sovereign in 2017), but rather we're with O'Donnell on this one —how about we sit back and watch what the full CGI Genie looks like before we go discounting the motion picture.

Sleep Debt is Serious. Repay it at Earliest.
Tumblr media
If we all would have to pay a fine for an inadequate sleep, then we all would have surely become bankrupts. Sleep is the most underrated and ignored necessity. The irony is that we assign residual hours for sleep on the one hand and get hyper reactive to fix resultant ailments on the other. Almost every second individual is having a sleep debt to be repaid off. A person with inadequate sleep has symptoms like short temper, laziness, inactive, headache, low concentration, etc. the phenomenon of sleep debt is applicable to any individual of any age from an infant to a full grown adult.
Medical practitioners recommend that an average adult needs sleep of 8 hours in a day. Considering today’s aspiration lifestyle an average individual is taking a sleep of less than 8 hours. To understand one week’s sleep debt, calculate the number of sleep hours you should be ideally getting in a day. Subtract from it the amount of sleep you actually get. Multiply the resultant hours into 7 days. Now figure you get is the total hours of sleep debt you have incurred for a week. These hours goes on adding week after week and month after month. This deteriorates your health in the longer run. The question comes is how to repay this debt. The only solution is sleeping itself. Let’s take a quick look on how to repay your debt before it gets serious.
Avoid Sleep Debt
The most primary way to repay sleep debt is to avoid it. Start sleep early during night. If avoidable, do not become a night owl. Respect your sleep the way you respect your breakfast and entertainment.
Take your weekend sleep seriously
Weekend or a weekday holiday is the only time when you can cover up your lost sleep. Do not lose this time. Plan your weekend in a way that your night sleep is not compromised. Your body knows that you have a sleep to cover up. Respect your body needs and obey its call.
Overcome all Sleep Distractions
Keep all distractions away. Anything which disturbs your night sleep needs to be overcome. Kids can sleep separately. Cover all light sources. Use ear plugs and sleep blindfolds. Do all that is required to protect your weekend sleep? You got a debt to cover up.
Start a Disciplined Sleep Routine
Get a disciplined sleep routine in terms of sleeping time. Adjust your sleeping and waking up time so that they cover your required amount of sleep. Late night parties or movies are Ok once in a while. But disciplined routine must be practiced. Start sleeping early. Cover-up your sleep deprivation at the earliest.
Unplug your Night
Break your engagements with all electronics devices with blue screens. Indulge in some light activities like reading or spending time with your family. Get a smooth landing in bed. This will help you to get sleep faster.
Split Sleep into two Parts
If your profession permits, divide your sleep into two parts – noon siesta and night sleep. This will settle your sleep score and nothing will be carried forward!
Change your Mattress
Your sleep deprivation need not be an outcome of your routine, but also the mattress you use. Despite your sleeping adequately, you wake up lousy, then probably your mental faculties were still active. To have a sound sleep, consider changing your mattress as well.
According to a recent study; more than 90 percent of Indians are sleep-deprived. There are around 80 well recognized sleep disorders out of which Sleep Apnea and Insomnia are the major ones. Despite of being directly linked to Obesity, Hypertension, BP, Diabetes, Memory Loss, a sleep disorder is the most neglected ailment amongst us.
Start your Monday routine with all regained vigor and renewed energy. Repay your weekly debt of sleep. Prioritize your sleep quantity and quality.

Using Social Media features
It was nearing the year 2000 and while everyone seemed to be worried about whether the world’s computers would be obliterated by the Y2K bug, Heinz, an American food processing company, was focused on an entirely different problem.
People weren’t buying ketchup through social media package.
To be clear, it wasn’t that people had completely stopped buying the tomato-based product, it was that they were starting to eat healthier and that meant eating fewer hamburgers, fries, and hot dogs, which in turn meant they had little need for ketchup.
Heinz started the year with sales of ketchup hitting a plateau. It was, by far, their most successful product and they needed to act quickly to make sure that it stayed in homes for years to come.
They considered many different ideas to refresh the public’s image of ketchup. One idea was to introduce a new line of ketchups, called EZ Squirt, that came in bold colors. The first color was green and was sold during the release of the movieShrek. The company hoped that kids would eat the ketchup during the movie and develop a newfound love for the product.
Parents and kids had fun with the new ketchup as a novelty, but it didn’t really have lasting appeal. Heinz tried releasing new colors like blue and purple and even tried a “mystery color,” where customers didn’t know what color they were going to get. All the radically colored ketchups were met with lackluster sales.
Heinz also turned to more functional ideas which they worked they way through various social media management packages. They explored what was preventing customers from using ketchup and discovered a common problem: their customers didn’t like pouring it out of the bottle.
Ketchup, as a thick, slow-pouring condiment, “plops” onto your food. In fact, Heinz ketchup is so slow to pour that the company had begun to celebrate it. In a 1987 commercial, television star Matt LeBlanc stands atop a building and strategically places a ketchup bottle on the edge of the roof. The ketchup begins to pour, and LeBlanc runs down several flights of stairs to a hot dog vendor on the street. He casually buys a hot dog and, at the very last minute, places it behind his back to catch the perfect pour of ketchup, falling neatly from the roof. A voice confidently announces, “Heinz. The best social media management and things come to those who wait.”
The ad was popular during the 80s and early 90s, but by 2000, people weren’t willing to wait for anything, even ketchup.
The company tried squeeze bottles to improve speed, but the ketchup would stick inside the bottle, plop out unevenly, and make embarrassing sounds the company politely referred to as “bottle flatulence.”It seemed like they were out of ideas. Then Heinz discovered a man named Paul Brown. He was the owner of a small precision-molding shop in Midland, Michigan. Paul had a crazy dream. He wanted to build the perfect nozzle, which would allow products like shampoo, lotion, and, yes, even ketchup, to be poured evenly from a plastic bottle.
What made Brown’s idea so unique was that the nozzle sat at the bottom of the bottle. Effectively, the bottle sat upside-down.
Heinz knew it was the perfect solution to their problem.
Through iteration, they created a dispensing nozzle that opened easily when the bottle was squeezed and closed quickly when the pressure stopped, resulting in a seamless and even pour. The nozzle and bottle were wide enough for the bottle to stand upside-down and leave ketchup at the nozzle, ready to pour. They even created a new bottle shape that made it easy to store in the side door of customers’ refrigerators.
When Heinz began testing the new bottle design, customers loved it. It was released in 2002 and the upside-down bottle quickly became a hit, winning Heinz numerous product awards and driving ketchup sales up nearly 25 percent.
This is not a story of a man who had an ingenious, upside-down idea. It’s a story of a company that knew that details mattered. They were willing to consider the entire experience of eating ketchup and refine a feature that had gone unnoticed.
As product creators, we must pursue our product’s vision with the same level of care and craftsmanship.
The Feature stage of the HPF is designed for tracking the implementation and design of the features that make up your concept.Throughout this book, we’ve talked about how we must move from understanding the customer to understanding their problems, and testing our early conceptual ideas to determine their validity. The Customer, Problem, and Concept stages come together to ensure that we are building the right thing for our customers. The Feature stage ensures that we are building it the right way.
During the Feature stage, we’ll begin creating workflows, higher-fidelity mockups, and prototypes to ensure that customers will be successful when using our feature. We’ll follow Lean principles and the Customer-Driven Cadence — formulating hypotheses, running Lean usability experiments, and making sense of the data to inform our next steps with the design.
Talking with Customers About Your Features
When talking with customers about your feature, you want to create an experience where they can explore it themselves, not give them a demonstration of your product. It’s important that customers tell you what they think your feature does; they shouldn’t be listening to you explain it to them.
In fact, if your feature requires a lot of up-front explanation for customers to understand how it works, that might be a strong indication that you have usability problems. If customers are having a hard time navigating your usability study, you might consider:
Higher-fidelity compositions
Your screen compositions might be too vague, making it difficult for customers to determine what your feature does.
Smaller scenarios
Your feature may be too wide sweeping. It may be best to break up the experiences into smaller scenarios that customers can wrap their heads around.
The right customer
It’s possible that you need to revisit the Customer stage and ensure you’re targeting the right customer. Perhaps the customers you’re talking to don’t have the knowledge and experience to navigate the scenarios you’re testing. Perhaps the customer you’re targeting doesn’t exist.
The right problem
You may have to return to the Problem stage to determine whether you’re solving the right problem. If you’re finding that customers are having difficulty understanding the problem you’re trying to solve, there’s a high probability that they simply don’t have that problem.
When you’re talking with customers during the Feature stage, the same rules apply as when you’re talking to customers in the Customer, Problem, and Concept stages. You’ll have to resist the urge to take control or tell the customer what to do.
In the real world, when your feature is released, your customers won’t have the benefit of having you sit by them, telling them how to use it.
It’s okay to let them struggle. Give them time to figure it out and encourage them to talk aloud, explaining what they’re looking at and how they plan to interact with it. If you rush in to help, you’ll miss key opportunities to learn how your customer will process and navigate your feature.
Formulating a Discussion Guide (with Tasks)
To get meaningful results, you need to ensure you’re walking customers through the right tasks.
Once you’ve identified your tasks, capture them in your Discussion Guide, along with any other interview questions, so you can keep your experiment consistent between customers.
Additionally, have some questions prepared in the beginning to help you set context before you ask the customer to complete a task. You’ll also include questions at the end to evaluate their overall satisfaction with the experience. Consider adding the rating scale questions you asked during the Concept stage to assess whether the feature is still solving a problem or is valuable for the customer.
It’s important to note that, while you’re testing the usability of your feature, it’s still an opportunity to get feedback from your customer about their motivations, the problem you’re trying to solve, and whether your feature is valuable to them.
Reasonable
Don’t test outliers or situations that rarely occur. You may be tempted to put your feature “through the ringer,” but you don’t want to optimize your design for extreme cases. Plus, it’ll frustrate your customer if you’re giving them a task that is too hard to complete.
Achievable
You should know what exact steps are needed to complete the task. If you’ve written down your Feature hypotheses, you should be anticipating what the customer will encounter as they navigate the task.
Specific
The task should be specific and have an understood outcome. You shouldn’t ask, “How would you search for a service provider on our website?” Instead, you should say, “I’d like you to find a carpet cleaning service, located five miles from your location.” Sequential Create a usability study that has customers progressing through a realistic sequence of events. Avoid having them bounce around from experience to experience. It may create unnecessary confusion and affect the results of your study.
