Well, Pathologic 2, you’re One years old! It’s as good a moment as any to reflect upon and shatter the time-lines you’ve drawn out for us. OR; Reading His-Story Against the Grain

i saw this post about pathologics incongruous timeline stuff the other day and i ended up Getting Into It.. this piece draws on stuff from patho classic but its focused on patho 2, especially on a comparison ov the Diurnal and Nocturnal “endings,” and contains spoilers for both games, probably, i guess, on varying levels ov abstraction and explicitness. i/m going to attempt to stand on a street corner and point towards Pathologic’s overall construction/presentation ov “time” as the Now-time, Exploded time, Messianic Time.

         on the content ov patho and in a real Life context, im also going to be discussing genocide ov Indigenous people, colonial Violence, police brutality, and anti-Black violence in this piece. i’ll also be contextualizing some views on History through the writing ov Walter Benjamin, a German born Jew living in the early 20th century, and friend ov Bertolt Brecht, who you may be familiar with if yr into patho. In 1940, shortly after writing On the Concept of History (referenced here),while fleeing persecution for neutral grounds, he was trapped in catalonia by a franco government cancellation ov travel vistas and,under threat ov repatriation to nazis by the spanish police, commited suicide on the night ov september 26. His theses were passed on by surviving members ov his group who were granted “safe” passage after his suicide, being later taken under the care ov Hannah Arendt and Theodor W. Adorno. His Grave reads -in German and in Catalan, reproduced here in english-

You’ll hear conflicting narratives around just about everything in this Town. Simon Kain, hundred something years old, mystic, spiritual founder ov a several hundred year old settlement. an executed general’s vengeful daughter, Artemy and Rubins foggy backstories ov military service, what military?, what war? Who sent in the Military and Inquisition, how can We get at the Powers that Be? looking outside ov the narrative and towards history for these sorts ov questions will give us All and None ov the answers. 

       The Termitary (internment/interment/intermediate/immediate/intermittent)  looms over the Home ov Isidor Burakh, Menkhu and sole Medical Practitioner ov the town(excepting disciples. consider the spread ov knowledge, what different Knowledges are at hand and how they perpetuate...we can see how Isidor himself looms from his grave Quite well!), colleague ov radical intellectuals from the Capital and serving with Simon in tandem with the Mistresses to hold the Town together by force. Everything is Happening at Once.

        Look at What/Who is Moving this Story Forward. Different ruling families will give you again, different Numbers, different Stories. One can’t trust the Numbers, we say! and One can hardly trust the Stories either, mind you. This engenders an approach based on following Patterns, exploring Roots, pulling back the curtain to ascertain the shape ov things, reading the lines so to speak. one Bull or Several bulls? silly question. again, we’re trying to looking beyond the Numbers. consider Time as a Multiplicity. consider Rhythmic and Linear time, Time Stratified, Unending Time, Plague Time and Empty Time, Lived Time and Time un-Lived, if one pleases!

           “Historicism rightly culminates in universal history. Materialistic historiography differs from it as to method more clearly than from any other kind. Universal history has no theoretical armature. Its method is additive; it musters a mass of data to fill the homogoneous, empty time.           Everything is happening at once, already, and, for the purposes ov Our story, A plague is on. (why is there a plague on?  in this Specific Case, read: Specimen, there is a plague on because infection serves as a very useful allegorical device. haha. see also dominant theories ov infectivity in russian imperial medicine, policy, and social science) Crisis as Inflammation. Violence and Control intensified along multiple vectors. Mobs, Witch Burnings, The Quarantine, districts carved up and kept under surveillance, the Town Police, Arsonists, government or Otherwise, the Military, the Inquisition, Hangings in the square, tallies ov the Dead in the Termitary... Was any ov this new? did it Crystallize from thin air? here’s an aphorism: There’s Nothing New Under the Sun. what can we find beyond the Sun’s reaches? what has the Sun given us, and what has Earth? shall we keep them apart? whose bodies are restricted in their movement over the earth, and how severely are they restricted? who is targeted? who enforces the control? is this what Crisis looks like? when did the Crisis start?

      Pathologic, having mapped out these lines, and being a concatenation ov narrative fiction that could not have existed without the precondition ov colonial expansion and the Extermination and Assimilation ov Indigenous populations and Life ways, can be can be unwound through a conventional historical approach by investigating various moments, epidemics, and movements in The Steppe (and all Land and Living Beings subsumed by Russia’s internal colonization) and looking for similarities, sources, influences, reflections, distortions... You’ll never find quite an exact parallel to the events ov pathologic, and you will find that the Trick that the devisers have given you in fact resides in laying out what can be gleaned from the Tangled view.

We got the Body Count at the end of the day, and commentary too. cant beat that courtesy, *hem hem* but again, looking beyond the Numbers. how many Bulls did you see? when is a question also a trap?

what are the Consequences ov inserting Living Beings into a Linear Framework? where did Architecture come from? how was this Story constructed? What do you remember about the Town? 

We can take the Diurnal “ending” as a fairly straightforward allegorical Byway for the Forces ov Progress. Boundaries are set, You are not the Town, the Town is your Soul-and-a-half.( wikihow to not be a cartesian dualist, consider also Spinoza if laying bare the path ov immanence was ov interest to you) What lays beneath the Sunlight? what still lays beneath the Earth? What time is it? things are weirdly cozy, in some ways. mimesis, echoes, ghosts. Are their voices still heard? grace tallies up the bodies. are You ready to Leave Artemy here? is this a comfortable future for you to imagine? how are you with uncertainty? Does the costume itch? do you ache at the seams, or are your joints sore from all the strings pulling at them? got arthritis? i’ve used stinging nettle. can a Story devour a human being? why would something with that power stop at One?  

What Do You Think Will Happen Now?

One can also make the Choice to step into the Darkness. One with many names has returned to the Earth,(”One” ov many False Deaths and Smart Tricks too. love ya girl <3)... taya as mistress-ov-bulls, grace as mistress-ov-dead, changeling as mistress-ov-absolutley-whatever. Mistresses, Mist, Tresses, Bulls, Brides, Worms, Plague...the Theme/s to note here is/are Multiplicity. Is there a difference between imagining the future and the past? Where are you? Where did You come from? the Nocturnal ending already asks enough questions to make me quite happy. sitting next to the Girls now, looking out at the New Sky. same as the old sky, Full ov Magic. if we take Death ov the Author into account, we could say that the Polyhedron belongs to the Dead in more ways than one. We can see your house from here! i wouldn’t say we’ve even gotten to the Prophet yet. When did our Hero leave us? did We have any use for Heroism? the Steppe is in the Stone Yard now. The World is returning to Life. what does it mean for me?

   ....“The way in which the dead are present is as the “caress” of a “breath of… air,” as an “echo,” or as a sister who one no longer recognizes. In other words, the past is present and everywhere, touching us every moment and “in the voices we hear,” but only suggestively, in and in spite of our own inability to recognize it. It is the kind of sadness, then, that gathers to the loyal servant or minion in knowing that it is being used for its ruler’s purposes”

         “Figured another way, the task of interruption requires us to locate the clocktower that we could fire upon to stop the day. Homogenous time no longer flows through the monolithic machines in the city centers. Now, a range of technological advancements have diffused and integrated the machinery of time into our very thoughts and rhythms. Where living beings once struggled to be free from futurity’s domination of their lives, we are told that they dutifully sacrificed themselves for society’s future.        A long “personal” anecdote: there’s music on the air and i hear a familiar buzzing. it isn’t twyre growing, nor it is the hum ov flies. we Keep bees here, to get honey.  I should try to remember to bring some to my wife tomorrow, though making the journey on its own is a bit daunting these days. 1 hive, 2 hives, the bees build and swarm and our Keeper rearranges the frames, adds in new boxes, tries to give them enough space that they'll stay within our domain. I think about the complex roles being fulfilled within the hive, and how any egg can grow into a so called “Queen” if need be. These Hives haven’t always held the same populations, sometimes a swarm will depart and won’t be Recovered. Look around the neighborhood, find the buzzing tree, you may be able to get them back yet but... have you tried getting a swarm ov bees into a box before? good luck finding the queen! (hoping i don’t have to do this but a bit excited by the prospect at the same time.)

        Our honey bees didn't originate from this region, i see them in the “yard” alongside native bees (one tries to plant for Everybody) but obviously, Our Hives are here so i’ll always see more ov the honeybees as long as they’re occupying them. Native bees to our Bioregion are leading very different lifestyles. Different threats, dynamics, and places in the ecosystem as well. Bumblebees are the most Beloved. Native Bees here- vital pollinators, ground and stem burrowers, more solitary souls than most, but are any ov us really alone? what are their favorite flowers?

          I think about Bees a lot now. I’m standing here thinking about Bees, and where I’m standing is in between the entrance ov the Hive and their favorite Ceanothus (see also soap brush, red root, buckbrush, see medicinal uses...). Very precious grounds to these Bees, not somewhere where I’m welcome. I Haven’t always known as much about bees. I get stung right inbetween my pinky and index fingers, on the palm ov my hand. yeowch! Bad luck, but i could still use a shovel the next day. This was an anecdote about Paying Attention to Your Surroundings.

       The Ceanothus isn’t flowering anymore, and hasn't been for a few “weeks” (i think?) The Bees have other concerns now. In fact, it was heavily damaged in a snow storm a couple years back, and half ov its branches collapsed under the weight ov the ice. Its a bit ov a twisted thing now, what remains still flowers but what remains is not so much. At some point in the future upon yr reading ov this, it will have been cut down and possibly dug out ov the earth. I wouldn't be surprised if a few more, smaller, iterations made their way to this space in remembrance/ tribute. The branches lost in it’s first wounding are still stacked up nearby, all sorts ov creatures love that stuff. Dead trees in the back that Birds still frequent stay for the birds. We never get that many plums because we’re not smart or quick enough, or as willing to take one great bite ov a fruit and let the rest fall to the soil. I didn’t really get stung by a Bee in a situation exactly like what i described up there, it’s drawing on a few different times that sort ov thing happened. I hope you’ll forgive me for my obscurantist tendencies.

       Looking past the Hives and onto the Streets, I am a White Settler(family fled the reach ov the Soviet Union to integrate into America, family fled family to a different part ov land under the Reaches ov said “America”,cave fled family but stuck with the Land, recurring patterns, what would my views be if i had grown up in Czechoslovakia? geography, chronology, trick questions) living in a segment ov Town that, until 1968, was a legally a Sundown Town, see Racial Restrictive Covenants. I still don’t see than many Black ppl around my neighborhood. I do see grocery store parking lots swarming with cop cars, more cops than i can Count, at least two k9 units, all to pursue One Black Body through the rainy night, My own Body lets me move through the world without these Forces being brought upon me in this intensity, lets me Watch.

          Certain alignments ov directions ov Struggle have brought me into the position ov the Other at the end ov the cudgel, a body in a crowd under the looming eye and long barrel ov the sniper, the surveillance camera. Visibility is a Trap. Any ability i have to Get Off The Hook is based not on Luck or Fate, but due to the way the color ov my skin is reflected in the eyes ov Those in Power. what can i do from inside This Skin, and what can i do with the veil ov a mask obliterating my “selfhood”? How are we to heal? If you didnt read this into my Musical choices already- im a bit ov a flaming/smoldering queer. sitting in the planned parenthood lobby, one among many, gripped by recollections ov the devastating history ov HIV/AIDS and a cluster ov other Crises, memories ov beloved souls lost to policies and hegemony ov extermination and neglect. blood in vials, piss in jars. how does the time spent waiting for results feel?(how long? weeks months?)

           I have more free condoms on hand than i’ll ever get through. A veritable theoretical eternity ov Safer Sex. There are Reasons why Queer Institutions give access to free condoms. But i’ve gotten them from some delightful Quakers as well. on another squeamish, libidinal subject, administering self injections isnt so daunting when you’ve seen it done a Million times before. It’s like watching somebody sneeze, or pinching yourself. HRT as potions, mechanical intrusion to will a slow transformation. getting into the fat is easy, some other avenues less so. “This requires the Gentle Hand of a Surgeon, step aside!” i know a lot about what Doctors Don’t Know. (veins and arteries as streets- easy. nerves as streets - you hear this a bit less. streets as eyes, the opening ov your mouth with a railroad track running down it, eyes as streets, whose streets? fuck streets! tear up the concrete)

          The aforementioned streets are closed to Traffic due to the Quarantine, and i hear folks and families from the neighborhood walking/hoverboarding/skateboarding/biking down the street,(mostly the new work from home yuppie class and their spawn respectively, but there's some real ones around here too. all ages. have yet to live anywhere that people don't ask me for cigarettes) chattering away, masks or no masks. If i take a long walk down past the cemetery, I’ll find myself passing by a Native American Youth Home, created to provide support for a population that is currently disproportionately represented in this Town’s already Massive Homeless population. (their covid19 resources and donation info) Even with the Plague on, New Condos are built and Old Condos stay empty. Who do the bones in the soil beneath my feet belong to? When did all ov this Start, and how Long will it go on? why does the Map look the way it does? I would rather listen carefully than dig. This Story is not the only Story, nor should any be.

      do i remember how the damp asphalt smells Here after Lightning Strikes? do i remember the feeling ov my body thrown to the concrete and the chaos and disorientation ov Crowds mobbing over me, slick with rain and sweat? who saw, and how many hands reached out to lift me up, who saved who? is that my blood trickling down the sidewalk? Flashbangs and Flashes ov Lightning, take yr pick. you can get similar experiential learning in the moshpit. this is an anecdote about Paying Attention to Your Surroundings.

i’ll try to bring us nearer to the point with baedan’s conclusion, a reflection on the First thesis from On the Concept of History. I will leave it up to You to investigate the original text if you are so Inclined.

[Where My Twin Watches]: Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood Episode 8

Happy birthday, Tephi! Sorry I was gone for a bit guys, work was kicking my butt for a while there. But we’re out of holiday season, and it looks like we may actually get another full-timer on my team! Anyways, where did we leave off again? Ah. Right. The whole “Stones are Soul Gems” thing. Guh. And Ed’s off exploring an “abandoned” lab, while some psycho with a knife is attacking Al.

Episode 08: “The Fifth Laboratory” Al looks up as the rooftop psycho (captioned as [66]) completely ruins the element of surprise with a battlecry. Well, given his heavy armor and the fanged skull-helmet, guessing that subtlety isn’t one of Mr. 66’s strong suits. Al jumps back and avoids the wild swings of 66’s machetes, to which the pfffahahaha ok hold up. I’m sorry, but he’s just so… pudgy! This 66 dude is a marshmallow, perfect example of acrofatic with the rooftop leap. Anyways, Pudgy compliments Al’s speed for someone of his size. Then follows the compliment by saying a lesser fighter wouldn’t be worth the effort to cut down. Right, masked psycho. Can’t let his adorable fluffiness distract me. 66 explains that he got the name from “them” when he came to work at the lab, and that he’s going to cut Al up nice and neat. So just sit back and scream, m’kay? Yeah, good luck with that, buddy. Inside Ed’s looking at a large Transmutation Circle in an open room, with a small pillar in the center. Said TC looks rather simple compared to the ones we’ve seen so far, is that really all that’s needed to make a Stone? Well, the TC and the noticeable red stains spaced around the five points. Ed makes the same assumption I did, and another voice confirms his suspicion. Said voice is a rather refined-sounding 48, another armored dude with glowing red eyes (like the Goths?) who says he’s in charge of guarding the lab from curious brats. Bit more back-and-forth between the two before Ed makes an arm blade, 48 (nickname Pompous) notes that he’s an Alchemist and WHOA he’s right in front of Ed already. Threat estimation just went way up. Yikes, and he’s already deduced that Ed has an automail arm. Pompous is proving to be pretty good. But Ed gets a stab in and- *clank*? Oh. OH. Wait a minute. He’s hollow? Like Al? But that implies… Ok, video’s paused for a moment. Getting some seriously bad implications here. We know souls can be bound to armor, our boy Al’s liv- well, existing proof of that. And if a non-certified child performing amateur Alchemy can do that, who’s to say a bunch of immoral scientists can’t? Take a lab designed to turn death into a power source, and siphon off a couple of the condemned to make immortal, nigh-impervious to harm guards for your sick manufacturing process. And why stop at just a few guards? Build up a friggin army of the things! Who’s gonna stop you? The genocidal government? You’re either working for them or you are them! Oh Leto, this is gonna end up with our boys having to face down armies of pseudo-Als, isn’t it? Cripes. Back to the fight, really really hoping that my theory is wrong. Buuuut nope, Ed confirms that’s the sound he hears when sparring with Al. Pompous reintroduces himself as the guy numbered 48 on death row, more commonly known as Slicer. Mass murderer, y’know. Pompous doesn’t confirm that the place was used to make Philosopher’s Stones, it not being “his area”, but he does reveal his Seal in his helmet, helpfully notes that if Ed destroys it, then the fight is Ed’s. Awfully considerate, although he says that he likes a challenge now and then. And he won’t just let Ed walk away, it’d totally ruin his mass-murderer rep. On to the fight! ...Hughes, you’d better have a good reason to interrupt the fight between our Protagonist and the Soul-Bound Mass Murderer. Yes, it’s adorable how happy you are that your daughter’s about to turn 3, but there are things going on! Roy agrees with me. Stop using a military line on military time to gush over your family! Hughes finally returns to more pressing matters, namely a certain scar-faced Ishvalan. They found bodies at the destroyed bridge, but they’re all so decomposed that they can’t be identified. Hold up, regardless of the fact that he’s clearly alive still, what do you mean by bodies? As in multiple? I count nine sheets there, where did they all come from? And why decomposed? The fight wasn’t that long ago. Although there’s no concrete evidence he’s dead, lack of sightings means Command thinks that he’s dead. So it should be ok to remove the Elric Brother’s guards soon. Said unfortunate guards have just found the empty room where their charges are supposed to be. [Brosh]: “Ah! Major Armstrong’s gonna take his shirt off again and yell at us some more, isn’t he?!” While Brosh sobs, Ross takes charge and orders him to follow to the only place they could have gone. To the Fifth Laboratory! Lots of yelling and grunting as Pompous and Ed swing at each other. But there’s a shift in gears? Ooooh crud. Ed’s arm is breaking, the increase in chrome and resulting weakness means it’s not holding up as well. Sure, it won’t rust as easily, but he’ll be too dead to enjoy that. Fight’s taken a shift in Pompous’ favor, where before they were equally matched now the Soul-Armor’s just standing, blocking while barely moving and then kicking Ed away. Pompous is all sad that Ed won’t last much longer, tired and wounded as he is. Not to mention that his partner’s likely finished with Ed’s companion outside. After all, 66 is quite strong. But not as strong as Pompous, of course. Ed finds this quite funny. See, he and Al have been sparring partners for quite some time. And to this day, he’s never beaten his little brother. Cut to outside, where Pudgy is getting his skullface handed to him. Or rather, knocked clean off. No sign of his Seal, though. Pudgy offers to share his story with Al, all starting with a man named Barry. Barry appears to be a butcher, given the artwork of a guy with a cleaver surrounded by meat. Barry the Butcher did so love cutting up meat into tiny little pieces. Until one day that wasn’t enough anymore, and he took his cleaver to the streets. 23 victims later, Barry was sent to the gallows. But then some dumbass decided that such a man would do just fine as an unpaid nightguard. Anyways, that was the story of the infamous serial killer Barry the Chopper! [Al]: “Sorry, I’ve never heard of you.” Barry/Pudgy does not take Al’s lack of local history well. Nor his lack of surprise to the whole “bodiless armor” thing. And then he’s surprised when Al calmly pops his own helmet off. Really, dude? The glowing red eyes didn’t clue you in? Heh. Oh man, poor Pudgy. You have no idea who you’re messing with. Wait. Why are you laughing? Oh. You DICK. [66]: “Are you sure that you’re not a puppet created and controlled by your so-called brother? Were you ever a real person to begin with?” Nope. Nope nope nope. Shut up. You do not get to ask those questions. You do not get to imply that Al wasn’t a real boy. That his memories were created to make him easier to control. That dear sweet Granny and Winry are just playing along to manipulate a “living” weapon. I was looking forward to seeing our boys take you down, murderer. Now I’m looking forward to them doing it slowly. Leto. First Soul Gems, now the whole issue of sapience and continuation of consciousness? This show’s not pulling any punches, is it? Um, cop? You may wanna well ok he’s dead. “I kill, therefore I am. As long as I know that, it’s all I need to prove to myself that I’ve always been me.” Back inside, Pompous is saying that he’ll finish off Ed quickly to go and fight the better fighter. Alright Ed, what’s your plan? Good plan! And shame on you, Pompous. You talked a big talk, but you really fell for the old “look behind you” trick. [48]: “That was dirty!” [Ed]: “There’s no such thing as ‘dirty’ in a fight. Before he destroys the seal, Ed stops to pick up Pompous’ helmet and demands what he knows about the Philosopher’s Stone. And just leaves the main body of Pompous behind him. Really, Ed? You’ve lived with Al for how many years? Seen his head get knocked off yet he still moves just fine how many times? Shame on you. Wait, what? “Impossible?” Why? You clearly saw the seal on the neck, right? Ooooh. “Slicer” was a pair of brothers? Independent head and body? So Ed was shown a seal inside the helmet, not the one lower down on the armor proper. And now he’s really injured, Armor-Slicer’s not giving him time to transmute (point for having the seal already on some gear, rather than using your hands each time). Ouch, jab to the cut and Ed’s down. Memory of Scar? OOOOOOOHHHHHH! Ed figured out Scar’s Hand o’ Doom! Armor-Slicer done got blown in half! And then freaks Ed out by wriggling. Ha! Pompous takes the defeat in fairly-good grace, calls for Ed to deal the finishing blow. But Ed’s not going to commit murder. [48]: “With bodies like these are we really even people?” [Ed]: “I consider you people whether you have physical bodies or not… If I didn’t, that would mean I didn’t believe my own brother is a person either.” Outside Pudgy continues to prey on Al’s doubts, goes so far as to dare him to break his own Blood Seal. Obviously Al won’t do such a stupid thing, but it’s because we know that he’s alive, not because he’s “programmed” to protect it. Guh, the sooner Pudgy bites it the better. Ed continues to insist that he won’t kill another person. Which amuses Pompous? Wow. Pompous remarks that it’s ironic, saying it wasn’t until they were Soul Bound that he and his brother were treated like humans. For that kindness, he’ll tell Ed everything. Awesome, we’re getting- aw crap. I know that dress. Ladies and gentlemen. Lust is on the scene. And she does not like helmets with loose lids. And Envy, as well. This is bad, isn’t it? Al, you may wanna get in and rescue your brother sooner rather than later. Jeez, hope Soul-Bound Armors don’t feel pain. Or at least it was quick for Pompous, getting split in two like that. WELL OK THEN. Guess that answers the question “Do Soul Armors feel pain?”. Envy’s taken up the sword and is repeatedly stabbing the Armor-Slicer’s seal, ranting about how their attacking the important sacrifice could have messed up the entire plan. Finally, the armor stops moving. Ed slowly slides up the wall to get to his feet, facing down Lust and Envy and demanding to know who they are. Uh, Ed? I know that you don’t know these people, that you aren’t aware that they seem to have hurt Scar enough - you know, that guy who utterly wrecked you and Al? - to send him into hiding. And that you’re pissed off enough to ignore your own physical state. But maybe you think you could tone it down a notch? Not try to kick Envy and prepare to fight? Whelp. Ed’s arm just went kaput. Winry, as much as I respect you as a mechanic, gonna have to question the choice to go so heavy with chrome. Rust isn’t as bad as these “technical difficutlies.” And yup Envy-knee to the stomach, Ed’s down for the count. [Lust]: “Listen to me well, boy. Don’t ever forget this. Always remember that we allowed you to live.” And of course, since Ed was poking around the place, it’ll have to go. Lust orders Envy to blow it up. Hey, uh, Al? How you holding up? Aw, no. Al, please. Please don’t let Pudgy’s mindgames get to you. Don’t start thinking that what Ed was going to tell you last episode was that... Hooray, Ross and Brosh are here! Woefully ignorant of how useless bullets are against Pudgy, but still. Uh oh, building’s cracking. And Pudgy recognizes what that means, makes a speedy exit. Al cries out that Ed’s still inside. Well, it’s not like the Goths are going to let their “important sacrifice” die as they dispose of the evidence, right? Called it! Envy walks out of the dust with Ed slung over his shoulder, drops him off with Al and Ross while cheerfully saying they should take him to a hospital and keep a better eye on him. “He’s a precious resource.” And like that, he’s gone. As the lab crumbles, the prison next door is home to a bunch of yelling prisoners. And further inside, someone named Kimblee remarks that it’s lovely to hear a building exploding. Hey, it’s Smiley, from the flashback to the Ishvalan War. You know, the guy who was grinning during the genocide? Seems he’s in prison now. This is the guy that Mr. Freeze was trying to recruit in the first episode too, wasn’t it? And even as the lab crumbles, even as our characters rush to get Ed to a hospital… Al thinks about what Pudgy said. ...wait, that’s it? That’s the episode? Come on! How rude is it to leave poor Al doubting his own personhood?! Post-credits: Hughes is talking on a phone, remarking that things at Central are pretty hectic. All the senior Alchemists killed by Scar? Rumor is a certain Roy Mustang may get promoted to fill in the spaces. But getting advanced so young Roy’s bound to make enemies. He needs as many people on his side as possible. Like a wife! ...yeah, I’m with you, [Receptionist]. Hughes, please stop with the personal phone calls. [Narrator]: “Edward Elric cannot find the right words to say what he must. Meanwhile, young Alphonse is frightened by his brother’s continued silence. Where does the truth lie? This truth is waiting, hidden in the memories of a young girl. Next time, on Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood-” Episode 09 - “Created Feelings” “The heart begins to waver because if fears what the truth may bring.” Hey, looks like we get to see Winry again! Almost makes up for Alphonse having to doubt his very existence! Man, I can’t wait to see Pudgy bite it!

Garlameld and it’s Real World Inspiration

Okay, so I’m gonna open up a bit of discussion. The main reason why, is multiple times over the past month, I’ve heard people equate the Garlean Empire to the Third Reich. Which... Isn’t terribly accurate. So here, I’m going to discuss where I believe the garlean empire is based off of, and where else they take inspiration from.

WAIT! No no don’t just skip by! I know, a lot of people just don’t give two shits about the Garlean Empire, but it’s kinda becoming important to a character perspective that we -do- care to understand their basis and their lore more... Even more so with the increased focus they are getting. 

Alright, so lets get started... And please, if you disagree and wish to say so, by all means do it politely and in a way that facilitates discussion. So right off the bat, let me hit out a quick disclaimer.

THE GARLEAN EMPIRE IS NOT MEANT TO BE FF14′S GOOD GUYS, NOR IN ANY WAY AM I ATTEMPTING TO SAY THAT THE EMPIRE IS JUSTIFIED IN EVERYTHING THEY DO, AND HOW THEY DO IT. I AS AN INDIVIDUAL SEPARATE FROM MY CHARACTER, DO NOT CONDONE THE ACTIONS PRESENTED IN LORE AND GAME.

Okay. With that out of the way, let me quickly say -why- I believe it’s important to understand where they are based off of.

BECAUSE WE HAVE A LOT OF SHIT GOING ON IN THE UNITED STATES, AND THE WORLD REGARDING PEOPLE HOLDING BELIEFS ALONG THE LINE OF HITLERS NATIONALIST SOCIALIST PARTY. 

It’s awkward, I know, but -PLEASE- bear with me. I remembered when I first started playing FF14, and encountered the Garlean Empire. I took one look at Black/Red uniforms and immediately my mind clicked and went “Oh so they are supposed to be fantasy Nazi’s.” It’s easy to consider that, so lets go over some small points as to why people think they are Nazi’s right off the bat.

Red/Black color scheme, common in association with Nazi characters. Aggressively expansionist against peaceful nations. (I will get into this later) Experimentation on humans and human like races. Very technologically advanced. Racists. Also that one time they tried to blow up all of Eorzea. And they kinda keep killing all the beast tribes.

On the surface, we look at these, and see well... Nazi’s. Really easy right? I mean, they’re dicks, they use Nazi color schemes and everything. Well, lets go into a few of those points. 

#1: Fuck you hitler for ruining Red and Black color schemes. 

Seriously, it’s a color scheme. I don’t know what you want me to say, but they’re not wearing SS uniforms, and shouting in german while goose stepping through the lands. Some legions, use red and black for their uniforms--- What’s that? Some Legions? Yes! With the advent of seeing the Doman legion, (Who’s uniform we get) we see that the uniforms change their appearance as their uniform is black with a gold trim. So... It’s a color scheme, for some legions, and that’s pretty much it. 

#2: Aggressive expansionists.

 Alright, this one is just a -bit- tricky so please -please- stick with me on this one. Garlean conquest is based on purely, conquest. Only in -one- place in the lore do we see someone claim Garlean Purebloods to be superior to the other races, and that’s from a mad scientist (Who I will get into later). Instead, what we see is the Garlean Empire expand out, conquer territory, and then subjugating them to service of the Empire, with the ultimate goal of incorporating the inhabitant’s and their descendants as -Citizens-.(This is important)

On the flip side, Nazi expansion was based upon the ideal of Racial Superiority, with a disputed intent among historians. Some believe the end goal was just europe itself, allowing the Third Reich to then create a system of government based heavily upon nationality with the intent to solely benefit the ‘Aryan’ race whom was considered superior over all.

This is not something we see in Garlean expansion, infact whenever a garlean insults member of a newly controlled country, it is all based upon their CITIZENSHIP. This ties in closely with another historical group who I will talk about later...

And as a final point, as to how we see them -treat- conquered territories... We see that for lands that rebel against them, they are quick to put out harsh punishment. Then when ZENOS THE CRAZY FUCKING ASSHOLE gets involved, he -deliberately orders the conditions to be worsened for him to get his jollies off-.(This will be important later.)

#3: Human Experimentation

... This has happened in the lore, within the Garlean empire. Yet, while compared to the Nazi goal of just ‘dicking around and discovering as much fucked up shit as they can’, the experiments we are shown are centered around granting Garlean Purebloods magic, which they cannot use naturally. Infact, the only reason we -SEE- this experimentation, is because Zenos (Aint Nepotism a Bitch) picked up the lost puppy of a mad scientist,  Aulus mal Asina. 

First off, FUCK THIS GUY. Seriously. Fuck him. He is not the -STANDARD- within the Garlean Empire. We are even -told- that he became Zenos’ little pet because NO ONE ELSE WOULD SANCTION HIS WORK BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT HE WAS CRAZY. He, is -why- the XII legion is filled with weird mutated creatures and other bullshit. Because Zenos, the crazy fucker decided to bring him -in- to the fold. 

Is this a sign that Zenos was just fucking deranged and held little value for life? Or that SE wanted add a dash of Nazi war crimes into the mix of the Garlean empire? Well, personally I believe it was meant as the first, with a little dash of the second. Hell, some could make arguments that the Nazi’s weren’t the only ones to do cruel and inhuman experiments... (YEAH I’M LOOKING AT YOU JAPAN, DON’T THINK YOU’RE OFF THE HOOK EITHER)

#4: They are one of the most technologically advanced groups.

... A lot of former countries/people started empires because they had a technological advantage. This could just as well be based off the USA, England, Egypt, Greece... Or what I’ll point out later. 

Secondarily, there is a -CLEAR- lore reason behind this. Garlean purebloods cannot use magic. That’s it. In the lore, the Garlean Republic was often bullied by neighboring countries, and in their search to find a way to fight back... They found Magitech, and then started to -steamroll- through the other nations. So it’s not just making them technologically advanced because “MAKE THEM LOOK LIKE NAZI’S”, there’s a bigger grasp of the lore present... Where it’s used to make UP for a weakness held by the purebloods, which turned out to turn the tables and enable their conquest.

#5: Racists. 

They as a nation, are racist. It’s true. So were Nazi’s. So were the Greeks. So were Romans. So was the Japanese Empire. The Chinese Empire. The French. The English. The United States. 

Moving from IRL to the game, there is racisim aplenty there too. Limsa violates treaties with Kobolds because ‘fuck those guys’, and then plays victim. Girdania shows in the MSQ they don’t care about the suffering of the Ala Mhigans, but care more what the elementals think, and Ul’dah... Do I need to really go into how racist and filled with assholes Ul’dah is? Save the Sultana, who is a sugarbun too pure for this world. Hell, it was considered a -great- advancement when a Hyur got to the Syndicate... And Ul’dah also committed literal genocide against a fellow city state in the past. 

Discrimination, is not unusual. Hell, it’s -common- in Eorzea, and the world in game from what we see. This is all COMPLETELY different from the racial beliefs of the Nazi party however. As we see no extreme equivalent to the Waffen SS, hunting down the ‘impure’ or those of theological differences. We don’t see concentration camps, though there are prisons for those who -do- resist/rebel. But the distinction of the reason WHY they are in there, will be important at the end. But lets get to the important one...

#6: They want to kill all the beastmen!

... No. I was -shocked- by this, but from what we have seen, the Empire is perfectly fine coexisting with a beast tribe... UNTIL THEY SUMMON A PRIMAL. At that point, they do not discriminate and wipe out the tribe in the area. From the Lupin, to the Anatana, to even the use of Kojin as mercenaries. The Lupin are even brought in as conscripts to be -used- in legions. Anatana are mostly left alone, and end up being attacked by a FUCKING IDIOT WHO DIDN’T THINK PROPERLY.

We even see the empire preparing to clean up some Vanu during the heavensward MSQ... And after having a chit chat with the emperor, and your friend showing up, they bounce back off to their GIANT FUCKING AIRSHIP THAT COULD HAVE OBLITERATED WHERE YOU WERE STANDING. 

But, we also know -why- the Empire despised beastmen... They summoned primals, and primals, slowly kill the world. To the Garlean empire, the moment a tribe summons a primal it is an attack upon the world, and -needs- to be quelled... This is -not- the same as the Nazi’s irrational hatred. HOLD ON DON’T GET READY TO THROW ME TO THE GALLOWS! This does NOT mean it is justified, and right... But rather the distinction is IMPORTANT. Moving on from this...

#7: They kinda tried to blow up Eorza.

... That is a thing we did. that is very much a thing we did. Although, that is really... Really not a Nazi thing, and if anything, was more a ‘America and the Nuke’ inspired event.So... Not Nazi inspired. Just as genocide inspired as dropping the nukes, WHICH I UNDERSTAND AMERICA WAS/STILL IS PRETTY FUCKING RACIST AND EVERYTHING AROUND THAT WAS JUST FUCKING TERRIBLE...

But it’s not a Nazi thing. It’s just a insensitive to life thing. Of course, the whole reasoning behind it ICly was “FUCK YOU IF WE CANT CONTROL YOU WE WILL BLOW YOU UP” because Eorzea kept allowing primals to be summoned left and right, and outside of one group... Really was not prepared to contain them. So yeah. Crazy, stupid, morally wrong, but not Nazi. 

FINE NOW WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU GOING TO SAY THEY ARE INSPIRED OFF OF?

The Roman Empire. More specifically, during the decline of the Empire. To simplify and not take up too much time, allow me to use a quick list for ya’ll.

-Liberal use of Roman Military structure, with consistent use of roman titles. -Consistent use of citizenship for conquered lands, including the popular ‘military service for citizenship’ -Brutality is often used as a response to rebellion, and not just because of someone’s lineage -The nepotisim that brought Zenos to power, and really, Zenos just embodying late roman emperors. -A republic that became an empire, while still keeping the senate intact.

So here’s the thing

With the ongoing downfall of our civilizations back to to fucking age of the Spanish Inquisition, it is time to be honest about things. Let’s review things I read in the news today: 11 year old boy KILLS HIMSELF because of a stupid prank, Russia started a concentration camp for homosexuals and have already found 100 HUMAN BEINGS to be tortured and worse, Trump is still president, Sean Spicer doesn’t think the holocaust was as “bad” as it was (fucking catastrophic). This is just in the news. Things I see posted from others on the internet and social media outlets aren’t any better. 

These findings, stories, articles, and opinions all lead me to one conclusion. WE ARE FUCKING DAMNED AS A SPECIES AND CIVILIZATION. Let me tell you a little bit as to why I feel this way.

1. Trump is president - Although there are still many of you that think everything will be okay, you need to think more geo-political  than that. The repercussions of Trump’s talkings with enemies of the U.S., sending Tomahawk missles in Syria, placing people in office who are not qualified or have obvious ulterior motives, jumping over LEGAL boundaries and steps to force his new laws and decrees on the American populace, not to mention him giving high-ranking government jobs that SHOULD require Top Secret Clearance and training to his family members that had normal jobs in fashion? And this is just to name a few. What he is doing may not seem like much to you, or you may disregard his actions because there is not immediate backfire but this is a HUGE MISTAKE. Politics is a sensitive matter, especially on a global scale with countries that we KNOW commit genocide, war crimes, make kids soldiers, rape because they feel like it, and generally hate Americans. To downplay or disregard the actions Trump is taking WITHOUT the permission of the people and other branches of government is not just wrong but also ILLEGAL on multiple levels. Trust me when I say that the affects of Trump’s presidency will resound through history, and I highly doubt it will be positive.

2. Organized religion - Most of you reading this are probably religious in some way or another. Whether you are a devout Catholic or you believe in a higher-power but would never go to church or claim a religion, I am not attacking you as a person. I understand religion is very important and fundamental in many peoples lives. However, if you are sensitive about religion then you may want to skip this section, actually the whole thing, you will not like what I have to say..... So, a little history lesson, signs of religion have been around since we (humans or humanoids) first started writing/drawing, even before we were able to begin recording documents, there are signs of religious alters and rituals. *Note* none of these archeological sites found any rituals or alters representative to any form or deity of religion that exists today, in other words, no god, angel, demon, spirit, celestial being, etc came to Earth and demanded our praise and shit. What is mythology? IT IS RELIGION. It is religion that has since been seen as “false”, “incorrect”, and “wrong”. So let’s review major religions in it’s early years, which we now refer to as mythology, when it had gods for EVERYTHING. God of wine, love, lust, wheat, harvest, rain, sun, everything. However, when you look at these gods and why they were worshipped, their purpose becomes pretty apparent. These gods we “created”, “made-up”, “origin-from”, whatever the fuck you want to call it because we did not understand how things worked (aka. science). We worshipped gods to bring better harvests, and smooth sailing, and fertility, and everything else because WE DIDN’T HAVE SCIENCE. The absence of these ancient religions and deities are because SCIENCE PROVED THEY DID NOT EXISTS. There was Apollo, who drove the sun across the sky. Guess what, Apollo changed his name to orbit. SCIENCE explained why the sun rose, and set, and moved across the sky every day Although, science isn’t what actually “killed” Apollo, it was Christianity in it’s early years (pst. it was christianity in the form of death and torture to non-believers). Basically societies and civilizations have disowned their gods for other gods (usually forced to worship or die) but also because SCIENCE PROVED WRONG. Religion is the single worst thing to ever happen to humanity. Don’t believe me? Pick up a history book, basically any history book that covers more than the last 500 years, and many war (especially those with insanely high death tolls) were “holy” wars. Not to mention Inquisitions, no, not the Spanish Inquisition, INQUISITIONS as a whole, every inquisition was to seek out and remove acts and forms of “heresy”, in other words, torturing and killing people who don’t believe in the same fairy tale you do. History shows us that the non-acceptance of certain religions sparks wars, genocides, inquisitions, torture, execution, and death. It has toppled nations and societies. To not learn acceptance and that people will believe what they want to believe and ignore the science (FACTS) of reality is a major part of why our world is in so much turmoil and pain today (IMO). However, read religious history books with world history books and see the trail of destruction and death organized religion has left behind. If you want to believe in something, believe in science, believe in fact, believe in humanity. We are all human, we all want an explanation for why we’re here, we all seek something “more” than what we are. However, when we find these vices to hold us to our humanity and prevent existential crisis, we uniformly use them as excuses to belittle, destroy, and kill others. It is a fucking joke. If you think your religion, god, deity, mother, spirit, gaya, beliefs are the ONE TRUE religion, you need to read the history of your religion. Chances are you will find that your religion is the remnants and child of a religion you are now told (by your religion) is heresy, Is it still worth the death it brings?

3. Rampant stupidity - with the majority of the world having internet access and mobile devices the power of social media is alarming. Now, I’m sure stupidity was around before the internet but now, with facebook, youtube, twitter, snapchat, whatever, ALL I SEE IS STUPID PEOPLE DOING STUPID THINGS. Cinnamon challenge, trying to jump over moving cars, blowing things up with no training, LIGHTING YOURSELF ON FIRE. Those are just popular trends from youtube. Although these things are dangerous and potentially deadly, I do not find these to be the worst parts of stupidity. The worst part is people soap-boxing their opinions and beliefs. Now, freedom of speech, press, and freedom as a whole I am a firm believer in. But, do not underestimate the power of stupidity in large groups. I see religious videos damning others and telling their followers to have negative feelings towards those that are different (cough*heresy*cough). A large problem with these videos is they have no FACTS, they have no EVIDENCE, they have NO “GOOD” REASON other than the one in their mind or religious text to spur their followers into a mental state of superiority. I hear people say “religion is a personal and private matter”, well it is or rather, it should be. Instead, we still have religions and leaders and representatives using THEIR RELIGION to advocate their reasons to place LAWS onto those believing in something else. PERSONAL. AND. PRIVATE. Believe what you want to believe, believe in god, or allah, or the fucking spaghetti monster but DO NOT USE YOUR RELIGION AS AN EXCUSE TO PREVENT PROPER EDUCATION, INFLUENCE LIFESTYLE, CHANGE LAWS, REFORM SOCIETY, AND, OR ESPECIALLY, CHANGE PEOPLE... PEOPLE, But this does not only apply to religion. This applies to more widely accepted and “safer” people like celebrities, political parties, online sensations, and the popular douche from high school. This applies to your friends. To your family. And to you. I said before I believe in freedom. I also believe in and VERY MUCH ENCOURAGE education. This education should not come from a pamphlet you picked up in the grocery store or church or group meeting where ever. This needs to be FACT-based education with no bias, opinion, or preference. The amount of shit opinions that OTHER PEOPLE are getting behind with no validity is causing the breakdown and destruction of our society.
