Crimes of Grindelwald...

has got to be straight up THE MOST disappointing movie I have ever had the displeasure of watching. Like what a complete shitshow. Now, I haven’t read the original Fantastic Beasts book (planning to this summer) but I can say just by movie standards, CoG was an objectively B A D movie and here I list all my complaints that no one asked for:

A movie should exist as a separate entity, even if its a part of a sequel/trilogy/series/whatever. It should follow and COMPLETE its own unique plotline. The absolute worst thing is when a movie serves only to hype up another movie which is what CoG was, an advertisement for another movie. And so what do you get? A movie that is entirely exposition.

On that note, the plot built up to jack shit. The climax of the movie, the supposedly epic magical good vs evil smackdown? Nah, forget it. Our beloved characters stick a couple wands in the ground to drive away dragons made of fire by making a Bigger Fire. Lame.

The charm of Fantastic Beasts came from its characters. Tina and Queenie? What a couple of badass bitches! Jacob? Hilarious, sweet, and a loving friend! Newt? Fucking Newt??? Caring, compassionate, patient, a PACIFIST- traits I don’t see often enough in male protagonists (who are primarily brave, stubborn, arrogant, suave, etc...) CoG had absolutely nothing to do with them. These characters were just...there...a lazy attempt at connecting the two films. Fight me on this, this story was not about the original characters; it was about Grindelwald, Dumbledore, and Credence (and marginally Leta Lestrange). So what you get is half the characters, who were supposed to be the main characters, now just...along for the ride, vessels by which the audience can be moved through overly complicated exposition. There is zero meaningful growth in these characters.

Characters that could have easily been replaced by a potted plant and absolutely nothing in the plot would have changed. More shoehorned attempts at integrating an otherwise irrelevant movie into the HP universe. Yes, I’m talking about Flamel and Nagini (don’t even get me started on JKR’s weird twitter obsession with trying to force diversity, you have your money leave the damn series alone).

So Credence is now Aurelius Dumbledore... good god. Someone teach JKR how to do plot twists.

Fantastic Beasts was all about Newt and his creatures, how he cared for them, his relationships with them, and how his experiences with his creatures gave him a unique skill set during his magical adventures. CoG was notably lacking in creatures, save for the obligatory niffler and bowtruckle scenes. But again, CoG completely lacks the heart of Fantastic Beasts.

So while I sit here rewatching Fantastic Beasts over an over hoping to god it’ll somehow make me forget CoG ever existed, here are...final thoughts. Upon research, the Fantastic Beasts book was written all the way back in 2001. It was a work that, I believe, was written from a place of genuine love for the HP universe. Now, take Crimes of Grindelwald. It was never actually a book. The screenplay was published in 2018 so probably written within the 2-3 years prior, well over a decade after Fantastic Beasts.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why CoG is Like That™. At that point, JKR had already gone off her shits trying to stay relevant and squeeze as much money out of the HP universe as possible. Capitalism strikes again.

Which brings me to take away from all this. JKR has made the huge mistake of believing the Harry Potter Universe is still hers. It is my belief that when a writer puts out a piece of work, creates this world and these characters, their creation is no longer belongs to them; it belongs to the fans. Authors lay down the foundation for fan creativity and it is then the fans who can build upon that foundation which is where you get fanfiction, AUs, headcanons, fanart, all that good stuff. JKR is overstepping her bounds, thinking she can just go back and change things and thinking its ok cuz she’s the creator so she gets the last word. You don’t tamper with the foundation, bc then you get instability which is exactly what is happening. There are discontinuities, plot holes, inconsistency in characters, stuff like that.

In conclusion, Crimes of Grindelwald was an ass movie.

i have Given Up on my sleep schedule and just try to get things done when i can srkjefskj but doing school work is,, hard hhh. this is my freshman year!! so i just finished my first semester like,, on wednesday lmaoo exams are done but Not my assignments ahaha. need.. to do that >:( but for now i’m thinking of majoring in psychology + social justice with a possible minor in business hehe
