What did bismuth Dirk make Hal FOR?

ALRIGHT! TIME FOR MY SECOND STORY DUMP! We need a bit of context before we get to Hal, so bear with me. (this is a long as fuck post)

SO! Dave and Dirk both come from Homeworld, as all gems do. I'm not super sure on the exacts, as the Alpha Kids are the first ones to leave together and they pick up the Beta Kids later but, we're kind of floating around the idea of Bro being Yellow Diamond or having some sort of equivalent power. Both Dirk and Dave are gems under Yellow, Dirk being a Bismuth and Dave being a Carnelian.

Plot stuff happens, Dirk escapes and at some point comes back to get Dave and now they have a whole squad and all that, yadda-yadda. However, during their escape from Homeworld, something Bad happens and causes Dave to get injured (don't know what it is yet but it's something)

Dave's gem gets cracked but everyone still makes it out okay. Due to whatever the circumstances are surrounding this, only Dave and Dirk know of the status of Dave's gem, Dave starts wearing actual clothing upon getting to Earth to hide his cracked gem, using the excuse that it's cool and he's trying to vibe with the style.

Dirk is a Bismuth, he's been trained his whole life to create weapons of war and things for destruction, and now, faced with one of the people he's come to care about most, it's the one time he can't fix a problem by putting a hammer to it. He can't help Dave, and Dirk blames himself for letting Dave get hurt in the first place, thinking he wasn't strong enough to protect him.

As time goes on, Dave gets worse, and especially after escaping Homeworld, Dave's cracked gem prevents him from spawning his weapon. This means Dave is filled with trauma on top of feeling deeply defenseless, coming from a place where having a weapon on you at all times was the only thing keeping you alive.

Dirk, watching Dave's deterioration, decides that enough is enough and he seeks out Pink Diamond. Upon finding Feferi, Dirk trades in something (A deal? A service?) in exchange for some of her healing material. He brings it to Dave and heals his gem.

So, you'd assume everything's fine and dandy now, right? Surely.

But no, it's Dirk, so it's not.

Dirk looks at this situation and says, "I'm never going to let this happen again" and concludes that the reason Dave got hurt was because he, Dirk, was not strong enough. So Dirk asks, "How do I get stronger?"

At some point during this time, the group is all out doing stuff together and Dirk watches Sollux save all their asses from something. Dirk realizes Sollux is statistically the stronger gem out of the whole group and puts two-and-two together (literally), concluding that what he needs to be powerful is...

Fusion. (do you see where this is heading?)

Will Dirk go and ask Sollux about this? Will he go and maybe ask Roxy, who he trusts? Will he talk to Dave and get his thoughts?

No, of course not. Because Dirk is a little stupid.

Dirk theorizes that if he can splinter his own gem and create an artificially copied fragment of himself, he'd be able to fuse with himself which would avoid having to rely on other people. So Dirk does the one thing he wasn't going to do to Dave. He takes the hammer to himself.

This, as you would imagine, goes fucking horribly wrong.

Dirk creates Hal, who is only a very small sliver of Bismuth. A corrupted gem that can't properly speak, seems to be intelligent, but also fucking hates Dirk.

Dirk, panicked, both because now his own gem is fucked up, but now because he has a little Dude running around his workshop, decides "oh fuck I need to fix this" and tries to fuse with Hal.

It doesn't work. Their fusion isn't stable. They can't fuse back together.

Dirk, having no idea what to do, decides to hide Hal away in his workshop and does his best to lie to everyone. Dave is suspicious, as Dirk starts to wear clothing that covers his gem, but Dave also isn't one for emotional vulnerability so he doesn't ask. Dirk continues to lie to most of everyone, even as his own state gets worse and worse.

Eventually, Sollux realizes what Dirk did. And he's fucking pissed. The lie gets uncovered and Sollux is ANGRY. Remember when Pearl lied to Garnet about the tower and the whole Sardonyx thing? It's like that, but both sides are angry at each other and refuse to apologize.

The rest of the group do their best to take care of Hal, they try to help Dirk fuse properly with him but it's not working, and Dirk keeps trying to force it but they aren't stable.

Eventually, something happens, and Dave gets poofed while they're out on an adventure (obviously Dave can recover, but it's a huge scare for Dirk). It's something Dirk could've easily protected Dave from, but now because he fragmented himself, he's even weaker than before. This is the final tipping stone for Dirk.

He goes to Sollux and apologizes, begging him to help him figure out fusion.

Sollux, resigned, sighs and agrees to help him. With time, Sollux slowly teaches Hal and Dirk how to work together and fuse, gradually helping them become more and more stable until finally they can fuse together and be like normal again.

Even after all of this, Hal and Dirk fused together aren't any more powerful than they were before. But Dirk grew in a different way, learning to trust others and see that not all his problems can be solved by just relying on himself.

Sollux, seeing Dirk & Hal's growth, who have now become a proper permafusion, offers to fuse with them if he wants to try it. Dirk smiles and shakes his head, and says that he'll be happy with where he is for right now, though he wouldn't mind taking it up in the future. Sollux is beaming back, satisfied that Dirk learned his lesson. (and then when shit goes down in the future we have this fucking awesome moment where Dirk and Sollux fuse together for the first time and theyre so fucking cool and i physicall explode)

Beta kid hugs:

Jade gives really tight, bone-crushing hugs. She holds on to the people she's hugging as though if she lets go they'll disappear. Her hugs are desperate and strong, but at the same time warm and protective. It's like being hit with a truck built out of love and friendship and trust and longing.

Dave isn't very good at hugs, especially before the meteor. His hugs are clingy and awkward, but there's a level of trust there that cannot be ignored. The awkwardness never goes away, but it does become intentional after a while. He generally holds hugs just a little bit too long.

Rose doesn't like giving hugs. It's bad sensory for her. Instead of giving hugs, she prefers to lean up against the side of people she cares about and rest her head on their shoulder. When she does give hugs, though, they're quick and fleeting, but not nearly as awkward as Dave's hugs are. A quiet reminder that you're one of her people and she's there for you.

Jegbert gives the Best hugs. They aren't too tight, and they aren't too loose, and they give reassuring pats. They give huge less frequently than Jade, but they're no stranger to the concept of hugging. They seem to know just what kind of hug their friends need in any given moment, and it's almost like their friends are being wrapped up in a hold specifically formed to suit them.

People always want to talk about codependency as a romantic thing but honestly I knaw at the bars of my cage thinking about codependency as like, a platonic thing. Familial attachments from trauma and high stress that make people unwilling to separate from each other. Which is to say I think so much about Dave and Rose dying together and being the only two humans on a meteor full of weird aliens (four of which have killed people) and how this would make them latch onto each other so hard during those three years. Going on a suicide mission with your sibling HAS to fuck you up in some intangible way, and I don’t think that either of them come out of that normal (assuming that they were to begin with). It isn’t even in a way we’re they’re actively aware of it and openly using each other as coping mechanisms, but they’re constantly seen together or seeking each other out. I mean thinking of it even just as a base level I’m obsessed with Dave asking Rose if he can join her and Kanaya on their date and Rose being like “No!” only to be seen sitting with Dave and getting shitfaced right next to him leading up to it. Those kids need each other more than they’ll ever admit to anybody.

i think theyre funniest as a (mostly) blackrom pair. i think they consider each other friends, and i think they respect each others' strengths a great deal! but i ALSO think they both do a lot of things that get on each others' nerves. and i think maybe they both get a little kick out of making each other mad.

think... early rosemary with the "flighty broads and their snarky horseshit-o-meter" only these two never actually move beyond that stage.

Just to start I am part of the “Vriska did some things wrongs because I don't wanna erase these cool part of her <3 and she was pretty cool doing all that”

Anyways so there's this dude right. Tavros Nitram. He and Vriska were larping one day, and she pushed him down a cliff. He became paraplegic because of that. And she always made fun of him because of that

Then bacause of that some things happen, she loses an arm, she mind controls tavros so he can mind control some animals so one of their friends get blind, and this somehow leads to a guy killing his kinda (alien romance) girlfriend (who was the one who made her lose an arm). The girl become a cool ghost later 👍

Then she forced Tavros to kiss her, and to try to kill her (so she could become a kinda god) then when he tried to fight her she killed him (and pushed him off a cliff)

She lured some kids to her house so she could feed her guardian (who is a...giant hungry spider)

The self insert of the comic did try to marry her once, but that's on him so

Vriska dies F pay your respects. But then this was reconned and now we have alive vriska and ghost Vriska.

Ghost Vriska fused with Ghost Tavros and they exploded bc of that. But they were kinda fine (although still ghosts)

hi! i know that i'm fated to read your every work despite not knowing the media half the time. this time i would like to finally be one step ahead. so uhh. where do i read orv? do i go for the webtoon or the novel? to clarify, i did try to search, but got confused by reddit. also i am going to watch trigun. i've been eyeing animorphs too but the 54 (?) books are making me go hmm. thank you for existing you're pretty great. you're like the spiderman of writing but instead you got asbestos rat'd.

But thank you, you're insane. People ask why I have stupid high standards for the fics i post on AO3 and it is because there are people like you who will just read whatever regardless of whether or not it's good. I have a responsibility.

This ask also made me wonder if I have good taste. Because every time somebody says this my first reaction is "oh god and the source materials aren't even good". I read a lot of trashy stuff (but, like, define trashy), and I consume too many bad things to be able to say I have discerning taste. If I enjoy something I almost never call it bad, because things were made to be enjoyed and I enjoyed them then they had value in at least one aspect. If you were to ask me if my favorite TV show of all time the Incredible Hulk 1974 was actually, unironically, good, then I'd break into a cold sweat. Is somebody bad because it's camp? Is something bad only if it's unintentional camp?

Regardless, I never write fic for something that isn't only like 80% good - there's a sweet spot of 'good enough for me to obsess over' and 'bad enough that I'm rewriting it in my head'. It's rare I write for anything I find completely good. Which is why I feel bad when people say that they're reading this thing I'm writing fic for jalksdf there's better things out there I SWEAR.

ORV is in the sweet spot of "this isn't high literature" and "this has given me brain worms". Definitely for sure start with the webtoon - the webnovel is clunkily translated, you don't read it for the writing at all, and it is also a literal million words. Don't read the webnovel unless you're like "I'm going insane and I need more of this". It starts off kind of slow ("This is a well executed very banal isekai") and you're like a frog in the pot of it slowly going more insane until you're a ways in and you are in a tangle of ridiculously complicated gambits and convoluted storytelling. There is literally no other way to describe it than the Homestuck of webnovels. If you're completely unfamiliar with isekai that's fine, but as a warning - ORV being your first webtoon/webnovel isekai is like your first shoujo manga being Ouran High Schol Host Club, or your first magical girl show being Madoka, or your first mecha anime to be Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's one of the best works in its genre but it's supposed to be viewed in context of the genre. Or maybe it's more like if Homura starred in Evangelion, which was Ouran. I'm just saying words.

Animorphs is kind of like Mother 3 in which everybody who has ever read/played it said that it changed them as a person, it changed their relationship with media and storytelling forever, if you read/play it you will be born again from the world's egg, etc. Works that genuinely become part of your personality. I also never recommend it to people because it is incredibly hit or miss. I remember using a spreadsheet of just "what books are skippable or not" because some of them are incredibly weird and some of them are incredibly weird in the bad way. The only Animorphs fic I've ever written is from 2019 so it's also not that great. Each book only takes an hour to read and the pdfs are free online, so it's incredibly accessible in terms of the reading experience, but it's kinda the Animorphs gestalt that changes you forever and not the individual books. I try not to recommend stuff that's like 25% bad.

Watch Trigun if you like what Trigun is - it's not going to deliver on something it's not. Also watch 98 first. Watch Stampede/read Trimax if you want more Trigun. The Trigun fic is based off Stampede but refer to my "I only write fic for smth that's 80% good and not 100% good" statement.

Also I think being bit by an asbestos rat just means that I probably have mold and drywall in my lungs, which would explain a lot about this blog. Thanks for the ask I love it.

#you have to feel kind of guilty saying “this is the homestuck of webnovels” and reccomending it with a straight face #and like i wouldn't outright reccomend it #it has plenty of problems. but also you dont care about the problems much ya know. #my asks #my writing #it is genuinely so funny that Animorphs and M3 girlies are Like That #sir this is a children's novel where a teenager vomits crocodiles #and it's not as good when you just hear people describe it like “oh read animorphs its sooo fucked up and edgy and people die” #like. yes its good because its fucked up. but also #the humor and levity and silliness is important and makes the fuckery meaningful #i think mostly it's the fact that animorphs will present to you some very shallow stuff and then ask you to engage with it like its real #its not realism or grittiness or edge #it just presents you with Very Basic Children's SciFi and goes #these are real children. all life is real sentient life. #yes the CIA really did do that. #when the enemy is killed the enemy is dead. do you understand. #thats what makes it a rly good childrens novel but also what makes it so disturbing as an adult #whose been asked to fictionalize suffering countless times in scifi #and on the tv. and in the news. and from each other. #and when we're presented with normal fictional suffering and the narrative is like No - Look At This #it changes how you engage with scifi and media in general #there's a lot of 'Jake' characters out there. but you can't look at them the same way. #did not expect the tag essay to be about animorphs this time.
