#this is from kipo and the age of wonderbeasts and obviously in the show it's meant in a platonic way

See all of this is making me just feel really really self-conscious about all of my obsessions. I do like sitcoms and romcoms and stuff, but your recent longpost is making me worry if like, it's a bad sign that I still enjoy Fire Emblem (A lot of wars led by Good Princes from kingdoms taken over by an Evil Empire, secretly controlled by a Demon Dragon), for a pertinent if not one-to-one example, or other things in similar veins.
Obviously, I'm not saying you're wrong, you have a great point (seriously you need to stop saying you aren't smart because that's a very well-put-together mini-essay), I'm just feeling... I unno, childish? embarrassed? I don't know how to put a word on this.
Maybe I'll get over it.
genuinely this is such a weird ask. no offence. what the heck do you expect me to do with this?
like. i dont know anything about the media youre talking about. why is me talking about media i like and i dont like bothering you? and why in a way where you feel the need to tell me about it?
like okay, go analyze your feelings then. go look at the values of your media then. if youre embarrassed then maybe you should think about why that is. thats not my job to do.
ive never said anywhere that no one can like quote unquote bad media, in fact im an extreme advocate for watch any media you want, enjoy things other people dont like.
i like lots of stuff. my perspective on media im watching is obviously my own, and youre saying this in response to a post where im very specifically talking about my feelings about a media im working through with my own perspective.
like personally some of my favorite cartoons have been centaurworld, steven universe, kipo and the age of wonderbeasts, rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles, star wars rebels, green lantern the animated series, gargoyles... these are all shows that speak to me, that have themes i love. you can read into what i value out of my media from them. i dont enjoy a lot of violence for the sake of violence media.
do whatever you want, i genuinely do not care. sending me this is weird, like you want me to somehow say "its okay dont feel bad" and honestly the editor was like "just delete it" but like. i dont wanna get more like this. some of you guys really need to just. make your own posts.
again, enjoy what you want. go make your own posts about what you like or dont like. dont ask a stranger on the internet to value or comfort you for things you think. its not my problem that me sharing my own feelings bothers you. im not gonna apologize for that, and im not sorry if it makes you feel weird cuz i have no idea who you are.

Ooo we just saw your ask on our dash (we're up early!!) and maybe you already answered this but, what kinds of stories do you like?
When we started to we reas for real we tended to like Warrior Cats and Watership Down. We had a small interest in Tokyo Mew Mew that never got anywhere and when we ran into Shugo Chara! it seemed dangerous and still piqued our curiosity somehow (we don't like everything about how they portray it but it's the closest we ever got to how we've seen our systemhood if we hadn't gotten fucked up psychologically around that time period anyways). We think we also may have been interested in Witchcraft Works because of the art or something. There was also this encyclopedia if cat breeds we always checked out? We can't remember anything specific about it besides the fact we learned about the snowshoe, exotic, munchkin, american curl, and scottish fold from it.
We're pretty sure it was Silva that used to frontnfor school and honwwork-related stuff and Hailey was front for mostly everything else which...explains why we guess.
I haven't found much I'm into in the way of books.
But one thing I appreciate a lot is modern Western Animation and its ability to tell complex, emotional stories with fun and whimsical characters who manage to be surprisingly deep.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Steven Universe, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, Infinity Train, Bee and Puppycat. Not to mention a lot of animated movies like Inside Out, Soul, The Mitchells ve The Machines, and Frozen. (I also just realized that my host likes Anna better than Elsa... now I want to do a rewatch this winter and then argue about who the best character is! 😁)
And of course, there's The Owl House, which I've insisted on fronting to watch every episode of!
Speaking of which, Eda turned out to be a surprisingly solid system rep! Sure, the Owl Beast starts off as aggressive and dangerous, but Eda learns to build communication with it, and they ultimately learn to co-exist as a team. And they have an inner world to boot!
Host: for myself, any story needs good characters, obviously, but I read to be taken away to another place and so the author can convince me it's real. This is why I love so much of Brandon Sanderson's works. No one does a better job at building complex, intertwined worlds and magic systems.
Worldbuilding is also why I prefer animated fantasy series over live-action. Unless your live-action property is based on books that had consistent worldbuilding already, expect the worldbuilding in most live-action shows to be shit with rare exceptions.
Did anyone here watch Once Upon A Time? It was a show that would establish new rules for how magic worked every episode, and then break those rules a few episodes later. For every rule, there was an equal and contradictory rule. It wasn’t that the writers made exceptions to the rules either. They just seemingly refused to read the scripts other people wrote, and didn't care if there was any consistency. This is true of most live-action magic systems.
The only fantasy shows that respect their audiences are animated, based on other properties, or Motherland: Fort Salem. That last one came as a complete shock because Freeform. The show itself isn't that great, but the world building is incredible and you can tell they put a lot of heart into it.
Back to books... The Discworld books are fantastic. I liked the first Shannara books I read, but then realized several into it that Brooks was just retelling slightly different versions of the same story over and over again in a stagnant world.
As a kid, I loved the Percy Jackson series and related book series like The Kane Chronicles. TKC is the only series I have read that was written from a 1st person perspective while alternating between multiple viewpoint characters, which is an interesting concept enough on a technical level for me to give it my seal of approval.
And Soph mentioned that I read The Hunger Games but what she didn't mention is that I knew the author before she was famous, from a little-known series called Gregor The Overlander. Both of these stories are great at giving you the classic narrative of the child forced to become a kid hero... and then pulling the rug out from under you at the end, telling the audience, "now these child soldiers are traumatized for life, don't you feel bad for cheering this on, you sick fuck?"
(Steven Universe did this pretty well too.)
And I unironically think that's fantastic. The Hunger Games is a criticism of humanity drawing pleasure from watching violence while you're doing just that. The villain in The Hunger Games was never President Snow, but a society that watches children hurt each other for sport. You, the reader, who was drawn to this story by the idea of seeing kids forced to kill each other, are the villain of the story.
The Hunger Games isn't the type of thing I normally read but I'm very glad that I did.

How Kipo Makes Great Villains
Tumblr media
I stayed up all night binging the second season of Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, and I’ll admit. Going into it, my expectations were a bit low. Season One had such a self-contained objective, I didn’t know what the show was going to do with itself with a second season. But the second season of Kipo blew me out of the water. So, now I’m going to rant about why Scarlemagne and Jamack are fantastic villains for Kipo to confront, and what Kipo teaches us about writing antagonists. Obviously, spoilers ahead, but if you’re caught up, prepare to gush over great villains. If you’re not, do yourself a favor and go away, experience the second season for yourself, and then come back and fangasm over how great it was.
Tumblr media
JAMACK
Kipo’s first antagonist is a perfect character foil. That is to say, Jamack is the exact opposite of Kipo. When Jamack meets Kipo, they are in exact opposite situations. He’s in a group while she’s alone. Later, when Kipo finds friends and is no longer alone, Jamack is kicked out of his group, forcing him to survive on his own. Jamack is very focused on self-interest and self-preservation, belittling his underlings for minor mistakes. His outlook is cold, cynical, and jaded. On top of that, Jamack grew up in this crazy world where only the strong survive. He’s also a part of the Mob Frogs, which seem to be the only mute culture with internal hierarchy. Other groups have a leader, but only the Mob Frogs seem to have levels of rank within the organization, causing the Mob Frogs to be competitive, even among themselves. So it makes perfect sense why Jamack will stoop to pretty much anything to get what he wants. Because that’s the mentality that allows for upward mobility in Las Vista. Thus, when Kipo arrives and upends the status quo and proves Jamack’s way of living wrong, he lashes out. Initially seeing it as her stealing his life from him, Jamack begins to gradually change. Jamack is on a similar and reflected hero’s journey to Kipo, and as she grows, so too will he. It’s no surprise that Jamack will eventually become a genuine ally of Kipo, even if he’s still hiding behind a Tsundere mask.
Tumblr media
SCARLEMAGNE
My god is this a fantastic villain. In the first season, he was genuinely creepy and intimidating, but in season 2, Hugo became incredibly sympathetic. As season 2 went on, I kept debating to myself who is more of the Zuko of this show: Jamack or Hugo. Scarlemagne serves the same narrative purpose as the Diamonds in Steven Universe, about how words and kindness can work through problems. But I think it’s done a little better here, since Hugo isn’t a world-destroying dictator. He’s done some damage, but nothing that was really lasting. His pheremones can wear off. The humans he’s enslaved can regain their freedom. So, Hugo’s actual damage as a villain is much smaller and thus much more forgivable than immortal galactic conquerors. Hugo shows this deeply in that he genuinely seems like he wants to make Kipo happy, but he’s been hurt for so long that he doesn’t understand how to. And this genuine care seems to come a lot more from his core personality, and not just Kipo making friendship speeches. Even Steven didn’t really change the minds of the Diamonds. He just kind of proved he was their sister/nephew, and they suddenly cared about what he had to say. With Hugo, it’s much easier to see that he’s not a monster, just a scared and confused man lashing out to maintain control in a barbaric world. It makes him a character who you don’t want to see succeed in his evil plans, but you don’t want to watch him fail and lose everything he's worked for. You simultaneously want to hug him, and also punch him. It’s that perfect balance that makes Scarlemagne so well-written. He’s officially on my list of top 10 tv cartoon villains. Also, it’s hysterical that Hugo is voiced by the live action Beast, and the second half of this season was honestly a better Beauty and the Beast story than the live action movie. Am I the only one who hears Dr. Animo from Ben 10 when Scarlemagne speaks though?
Tumblr media
DR. EMILIA
Talk about bait and switch. I don’t know if it was their intention, but I assumed the woman in the bird mask was Song, Kipo’s mother. It was clear that she and her goons were wearing burrow jumpsuits, and as it seemed more and more like her mother wasn’t dead, so I assumed this had to be her. This was such a great misdirection. Assuming she’s the hero because of our opinions of Scarlemagne, it’s what gives this show such amazing rewatch potential as now you can go back and pay attention to her words and actions and realize what she’s genuinely like. But even on a character level, she’s a fantastic villain. Kipo is a master of Talk no Jutsu, a fan term from the Naruto fandom, as he had a knack for talking literally anyone into becoming his friend, even the ones actively trying to kill him. Steven Universe and Kipo seem to be the other two masters of this technique. But Dr. Emilia will likely be immune to this. She doesn’t strike me as the sit and talk things out type. Because there are times when words won’t stop people, but action will. Dr. Emilia is a villain Kipo can’t reason with, someone she can’t befriend with a good speech. But even on a philosophical level, Dr. Emilia is fantastic because while she’s clearly a villain, her goal isn’t inherently evil. She sees mutation as a bad thing and wants to restore mute DNA to their normal animal forms. Which is a large part of why humans need to live in burrows. She wants humans to not live in fear, and to restore animals to their genetic origins. At least in theory, it’s a benign enough goal. The problem comes when you consider that animal mutes have sentience. they can speak and express desires. Robbing them of that is akin to purposefully mentally disabling a group in order to be dominant over them, which adds to the great themes here because there’s a loose veil of animals as an enslaved species. Kept in cages or as pets, ruled over or hunted by man who views itself as the superior race, the same sort of thinking that white slave-owners used to rationalize their prejudice. Thus it’s also a loose allegory for Dr. Emilia wanting to return emancipated slaves back to their chains. This is why she’s such a good villain. At face value, her goal sounds sort of reasonable, but when you examine what she’s really doing, it’s incredibly dark and cruel. That level of detail and writing is amazing. Talk about a well-written villain. I’m sorry, I can’t stop gushing.
Tumblr media
Kipo demonstrates three equally compelling types of villains, and handles all of them amazingly. Jamack is the hero’s villainous foil, on his own mirrored hero’s journey as hers. His situation is always an exact opposite of hers, as was his life experiences, which led to such a stark difference of ideas. Thus, why it takes her utterly alien character traits to kick start his character arc. Hugo is a beautifully flawed and tragic villain whose goal of bringing the mutes together under a single ruler is genuinely compelling, but you still don’t want him to succeed the wrong way. Yet, if he could achieve his goal in a less hostile and evil way, I doubt fans would be upset with him achieving this goal otherwise. It’s just his approach that’s problematic. Dr. Emilia seems reasonable enough on paper, but once you unpack what she’s really doing, you can read a really deep allegory for slavery and racial superiority into her character that really complicates the otherwise black-and-white opinion of her character. Each of these villains shows ways you can make a compelling antagonist, and if you read this without watching Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeats despite my spoiler warnings, do yourself a favor and watch it. You will not be disappointed.

while im pleased to see more black protagonists i really wish that i could see some visibly black protagonists like. kipo is extremely racially ambiguous and so is luz. i know theyre both mixed but visibly black mixed people exist (such as me). i definitely feel like this is a colorism issue. give me a dark-skinned black protagonist like wolf. but like as an actual protagonist as opposed to a side character. both luz noceda from the owl house and kipo oak from kipo and the age of wonderbeasts are examples of this. maryanne from bsc the show and julie from jatp as well.
eurocentricism and colorism are real, fam. we need more dark-skinned protags. dark skinned side characters aint enough. plus imo it isnt real representation of black people unless the character is obviously, visibly black. im so tired of it

Darrow is Not Going to Die at the End of the Series Part 2
There are probably going to be at least one or two more parts depending on how much I can stop myself from blathering on. Anyway, spoilers ahead for the following: Dark Age, Hunger Games, Castlevania, Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, Avengers Endgame, The Hobbit, Voltron, FMA, HttYD, Death Note, Madoka Magica, Merlin, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, HunterxHunter, Dragon Prince, He-Man (the new one), Yu Yu Hakusho, Persona 3. Mass Effect, The Hollow, Camp Cretaceous, and whatever else I can think of.
I last left off on talking about how my thoughts implied that Darrow could die at the end as long all the loose ends are tied. But, I don’t think that that’s really something that can actually happen. A lot of this is speculation on my part and really relies on what happens during the 6th book.
The first thing that came to mind was Mass Effect. The ending of Mass Effect 3 was...not very well received. I’m not going to say that I’m particularly happy with it either but I also think it fits the narrative. However, one thing to note, video games are different than books and the story that Shepard goes through is reliant on the player. Also, stories in games are going to be shorter than stories in books (for the most part, there are definitely exceptions) due to player involvement.
I’m going to start with Shepard’s first death, at the beginning of Mass Effect 2. Of course, being the second game, their death couldn’t be permanent unless BioWare switched protagonists mid trilogy. There are a few reasons, in my opinion, that Shepard was killed during the opening credits of the second game.
First of all, the combat changed between games (a lot between the first and second and only slightly between second and third), and I think Shepard’s two year absence gave a reason for a tutorial on the new combat system. They were dead and had to learn how to use new technology. This is also done between the second and third games, with a 6 month gap, but the combat only changed slightly. Secondly, having the main protagonist die really highlights the threat that the player is dealing with in the second game but, Shepard’s return also shows that they still have unfinished business and that their story isn’t over. Thirdly, I think the absence gives time for the secondary characters time to develop on their own. This is shown more with the characters who appeared in the first game but also it gives an idea of just how much of an impact Shepard had. I feel like this is a parallel to the time Darrow spent in the table between GS and MS.
Now to move on to Shepard’s more permanent death...although if you complete the game entirely (at least in the legendary edition; thank goodness I hated the battle readiness thing) there is a dubious ending where Shepard may or may not have lived. But in any case, Shepard is considered dead and their story is over. Whatever my feelings about this may be, this type of ending didn’t come out of nowhere. The main threat, the Reapers, have been dealt with in a permanent manner, or at least it’s heavily implied that they won’t be coming back. However, just because the Reapers are gone doesn’t mean there aren’t still things to be done. Specifically, recovery. Shepard very well could have been involved in this but it’s not necessary. Their story is over, they have dealt with the threat and it’s not coming back.
Darrow, on the other hand, has not finished his mission. Even if he does by the end of the next book, however, it’s a very different circumstance from Shepard. The threat in Mass Effect was a very large and tangible thing, whereas the problem Darrow faces is an ideology and the people who hold those views. Something like that doesn’t end with a large space weapon pointed directly at the threat; it permeates everything. So even if Darrow defeats Atalantia, Lysander, and whoever else, there’s most likely going to be more people who shared belief that Golds are best. Also, we saw how the Vox Populi felt about the things Darrow was doing. Darrow is essentially reconstructing an entire system of government and, no matter how correct Darrow is, there will always be people who disagree with him.
Assuming Darrow defeats the remnants of the Society, stops the Ascomanni, deals with Quicksilver and whatever he’s doing, takes care of Atlas, handles Apple, what’s left? Much like with the end of Mass Effect, what’s left is recovery. The difference between these two, however, is that while Shepard was not necessarily needed for the rebuilding, Darrow would be.
Now, both Shepard and Darrow spearheaded their respective causes, but (and this relies heavily on how the sixth RR book goes) defeating the Reapers was a group effort, utilising every species and as many resources as they can spare. No doubt the rebuilding of the entire galaxy will require the same. Not that Darrow’s goal hasn’t been similar in that regards, with the help of so many different Colors being necessary. It’s just....Darrow’s circle feels a lot smaller than Shepard’s.
I mean, obviously being the face of a war is going to get you a lot supporters and people to work with, but the most important players are Darrow’s close friends and family. I’m sure part of this is the fact that the books are first person with specific POVs. Mass Effect does focus on Shepard’s story, but it’s in third person and you get a lot of different information through sidequests and talking to other characters. I mean, there’s a whole codex in Mass Effect with a lot of information and there isn’t one for RR (PB should make one tho). Our knowledge of the universe and its history is more limited in RR than Mass Effect, but I think that’s mostly because the lore in Mass Effect has more of a direct impact on how the story goes.
But back to the original point, it’s explicitly shown in Mass Effect that it requires everyone to stop the Reapers. And even though we see Darrow’s army, the main players, the ones who are taking care of the big things, are still Darrow’s inner circle. As an example, Mass Effect would be more like a pyramid (ironic) where Shepard is at the top. Even if it crumbles away (they die), the pyramid will still stand. For RR, it feels more like a chain. If one of the links (Darrow) breaks, then the chain is also broken. You could re-attach the pieces but it wouldn’t be as strong as it once was.
One last thing I wanted to bring up (which I will bring up again in part 4, yes I said part 4), is technology. Both Mass Effect and RR take place in the future and therefore have better technology than we do. There is something very important about this technology though that makes it more likely for Darrow to live. The Reapers are a race of sentient squid machines hellbent on the genocide of every other sentient species in the galaxy. But they are the ONLY things with access to that kind of technology. Even when they share it with Saren or the Collectors, it’s not something others can replicate. And once they’re destroyed (control ending notwithstanding) at the end of the third game, that’s it. They could still have people who are indoctrinated (although I think that stops when the Reapers were destroyed?) or people who are just stupid and think they were right, but...those people aren’t a threat. They can’t bring back the Reapers, I doubt anyone would be able to recreate such a thing (at least not within Shepard’s lifetime even if they did live). So once the Reapers were gone...that’s it.
Now, the technology in RR is, for the most part, accessible to everyone. Assuming Darrow defeats Atalantia, Lysander, etc. their way of thinking would still be around. But with the way the universe works, I think it would entirely possible for supporters of the Society to rise up and start a conflict all over again. This means Darrow is not finished yet, even if the immediate threats are gone. It wouldn’t make sense for him to die when there’s still stuff for him to do.
I do think, though, that it is worth mentioning that the definite ending of Mass Effect is probably related to the fact that it’s a video game and especially for stories like that, a more open ended conclusion with the implication that I COULD do more would only be frustrating. With tv shows, movies, and books, I notice, having a more vague ending works better because you’re just separated enough from the story that you can enjoy the implications of more stuff without feeling unsatisfied. There’s always exceptions of course.
ANYWAY, it part 3 I’m going to be talking about Persona 3 and 5 so....stay tuned.

Studio Mir is officially partnering with Netflix to produce original animated movies and series!
As you probably know, Studio Mir is the Korean animation studio behind most of the beautiful animation in The Legend of Korra. In fact, it was founded to animate Korra!
Since then, they’ve worked on a lot of other projects, many of which have already been tied to Netflix in some way. Voltron: Legendary Defender, Secrets of Elvendale, and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts were all Netflix Originals animated by Studio Mir. Voltron and Kipo were from DreamWorks, and appear to be the result of a 2014 deal between DreamWorks and Studio Mir ago that was originally announced to consist of “up to four” 78-episode 2D-animated series, which obviously turned out to be false as it was only two shows consisting of 78 and 30 episodes respectively.
The thing is, now, DreamWorks lives on NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock (while Disney has Disney+, Warner’s HBOMax got Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon is currently in a weird place split between Netflix and the upcoming Paramount+), so it appears that the DreamWorks-Studio Mir relationship is over with this new Netflix deal.
Statement from Jae Myung Yoo, CEO of Studio Mir:
“[W]e are thrilled to establish a solid partnership with Netflix. Through the production line deal, we look forward to showcasing the vibrant creativity of Korean animation to a worldwide audience.”
Studio Mir on their official Instagram:
“We are so excited for the partnership with Netflix! We can't wait to show you what we're working on 🙂”
Really exciting that they’re already working on new stuff!
One project has already been announced, an animated spin-off film of Netflix’s The Witcher original series, titled The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
This movie isn’t necessarily part of this week’s deal, since it was announced earlier this year, but it’s clear that it is part of a deepening relationship between Studio Mir and Netflix that already has years of foundation, and has finally been made official. It’s great to know that we’ll get to experience the top-tier animation that started with Korra for many more years to come!
(And just a disclaimer that as usual the above artwork is a mockup I made, if it wasn’t obvious. We haven’t seen any footage or stills from Witcher or any of the other upcoming projects yet.)

So. Centaurworld, huh.
I just watched season 1 in one sitting.
It's a very interesting concept, and it was quite entertaining. Unfortunately most of the jokes were a total miss for me, and I guess that's kind of the point, but I feel like things that the author intended to be funny, often weren't? I don't know, just not my style of comedy.
I also feel like they kind of fell into the "planet of hats" trap a little, with many types of centaurs they were meeting having at most one character actually standing out from the rest. The tiger guy, the comfortable dude, the... Fish guy? Except for the shamans, that's basically it. I think it's the same problem I have with Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, but that show had more seasons and time to develop some characters, and fixed that a bit, so I guess I hope the same happens here.
The main group of characters needs some MAJOR development too. To me they seem a bit like... Archetypes wrapped in a thin layer of friendship. I don't even remember half their names, to be frank. Of course, save for Horse, Wammawink got the most attention and development, but she still needs loads until she's a compelling character for me. (I'm also not sure how to read the relationship between her and Horse. She's obviously the "mom" of the group, so I guess for now I'll just stick to that).
And I hate fucking Ched. I see what they were trying to do with him, and it was NOT working, man was it just so annoying to have to hear him anytime he spoke or interacted with anyone. I don't think there is one scene I remember I enjoyed with him. The show would lose nothing if he didn't exist, like, really.
The songs were... Decent. None of them got stuck in my head, but they weren't a pain to listen to, and the singers did well. The Nowhere King's song was nowhere as chilling to me as Over the Garden Wall's Beast's song, maybe because the whole imagery was very reminiscent of it, and it just felt like something I have seen done better before. Also, that was definitely Studio Ghibli Black Evil Goop, right?
But you're reading this and probably thinking "wow they really hated it", and I didn't! I think it's a series with a good premise, great animation, and lots of potential! I just really hope it picks up somewhat in the next season, and that it doesn't seem like another hatland fetchquest.

movies & shows
cracks knuckles* alright this is going to be more of a rant than an analysis because i’m basing this on both my research, but also how it felt to personally be baited by these shows. there are obviously more pieces of bad (almost every horror movie) and good ones but these are the ones i’ve watched.
please keep in mind that i am but one queer and everyone has different opinions.
Supernatural (CW) 2005
Tumblr media
This show is 15 years old and just ended. From season 5 till 15, there has been tension between two of the lead characters. They were constantly shipped together and not only did the entire fandom know about this ship but so did almost all of Tumblr. On top of that, the actors and show runners knew about it as well. Which is why it makes it ridiculous that it was constantly pushed aside while the romantic coding  kept happening, even after show runners dismissed it as being intentional. The Destiel (Dean x Cas) case has been going on for years, and as the show came to its end, many fans had hope. But N O P E. Instead, we got a love confession from Cas where Dean looked like he was near constipated and the Cas was killed and sent into a fiery place that was not hell but s u p e r  h e l l.
… w hy.
Sherlock (BBC) 2010
Tumblr media
Just like Supernatural, this show was renown on Tumblr for not only how good it was, but its hinting at a potential relationship between Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. But again, like Supernatural, the intentional tension between the two characters was denied by producers. This caused an uproar within the fandom, and even left some people believing that, after the last season aired, it had been a joke and the producers were hiding a “secret, unaired season” because they had felt so robbed by this show that had implied something and denied it.
The 100 (CW) 2014
Tumblr media
We got lesbians. We got background gays. We were happy. Then, all of a sudden, one of them is killed for no reason. Did it advance the plot? No. Was she fighting and died in battle? lol no. She was doing literally nothing and got shot and died. And then the producers kept bringing her back once a season in the form of a ghost or illusion because why? Because she was a fan favourite queer character. ✨bury your gays and sparingly bring them back for profit anyone?✨
Voltron: Legendary Defender (Netflix) 2016
Tumblr media
*deep breathe* This one is a special disaster. Not only was there romantic tension and romantically coded scenes for 7 seasons, but producers, voice actors and artists working on the show repeatedly said “don’t worry klance (Keith x Lance) shippers, you’ll be happy”
. … w h e r e??? You code one of their scenes with a sunset in the background while they talk about love and then one of them goes on a date with someone who has declined his advances for 7 seasons but now in season 8 decides to do a full 180. Not only that, but you announce at a Comic Con (a convention) that a character is gay and has a fiancé, only to kill off the fiancé and never make it explicit in the show except at the last second of the last episode where he marries a no name character.
Personally, i’d like to say a big fuck you to the show that strung me along for 2 years and never stopped saying we’d be happy to then pull the rug out from under us and call us crazy for thinking anything from the past 8 seasons was intentional.
Scooby-Doo (2002)
Tumblr media
While not being outwardly queerbaiting, this movie’s filmmaker has just revealed some shocking news, which wasn’t at all shocking to the gays who had watched this movie over the years. In July of 2020, James Gunn, the filmmaker of Scooby-Doo, revealed in a podcast that, initially, Velma was explicitly gay in his script, but then the studio watered it down until it became nothing. This isn’t an example of baiting as much as it is changing a character’s initial design to “better fit an audience”. The worst part of all this is that with Velma’s character having been written with a l i t t l e queer subtext, people had been theorizing about if since the movie came out, but were always yelled at by the internet for “imagining something that isn’t there”. But now, even with it being said that the initial point was for her to be gay, people have no objections to still refusing to accept it. Why?? So we can’t get the subtext gays OR the confirmed gays?? Make it make sense.
Brooklyn 99 (NBC) 2013
Tumblr media
To have the queer characters firstly introduced without mentioning their sexualities and have it brought up naturally was so goddamn nice to see, because no one does a big deal about it unless they ask for that. This show is amazing in general but the way they show their queer characters is *chefs kiss*.
She-ra and the Princesses of Power (Netflix) 2018
Tumblr media
This. Show. My heart SOARS. It's just a remake of an old show so absolutely nothing was ever expected, but then it was sprinkled in and ENDED WITH A BANG. And it was so beautiful and real to see the struggle of two friends who care for each other and want to be together but have different visions of the world fall in love. And they also had characters with disabilities, a non-binary character and jUST SUCH A GOOD SHOW.
Kipo and The Age of Wonderbeasts (Netflix) 2020
Tumblr media
This is a case where you go into it not expecting anything and are BLOWN AWAY by the bare minimum. And not because it’s bad!! It's mind blowing because this is the simple representation we need!! Not something over the top, but an every day relationship. It’s just two boys falling in love and going on dates and being nervous around each other, yet i was so stunned. Because it’s not shown enough. I should not be this excited over something that should be this normal. 10/10 though this show is so good for all kinds of representation.
Steven Universe (Cartoon Network) 2013
Tumblr media
This show did so much for queer representation with its general message of loving everyone and loving who you want. Especially since it was aired on Cartoon Network, a channel for kids, it was able to help normalize something so looked down upon in some circles. It made it easy to watch for s o m e people because it's a cartoon but it's so beautiful to see these ladies so in love with each other, both platonically and romantically and we see them have a family dynamic that isn’t a “nuclear family”. Rebecca Sugar (creator) really said “lemme just break all stereotypes real quick”.
Adventure Time (Cartoon Network) 2010
Tumblr media
It's the “knowing a fanbase shipped something so hard that the creators made it canon” for me. This relationship had been theorized by fans for years, but it had never been explicit in the show. When the finale episode came out and the two shared a kiss, it was a moment of celebration. The producer of the show said that it had not really been planned but when the episode was being made, the choice of what happened was given to one of the artists (bless your soul Hanna K. Nyströmthe). And as the show releases little bonus episodes, its latest was centered around Marceline and Bubblegum and their relationship. AND WE LOVE TO SEE OUR DOMESTIC LESBIANS BEING HAPPY AND IN LOVE.
Yuri on Ice!!! (anime) 2016
Tumblr media
The fact that an A N I M E gave us a love story between two men is mind boggling and it makes me so happy!! Especially because it's a Japanese show and they’re very conservative about these things just makes it more emotional. The creators said they wanted to make the anime take place in a world where gay/straight isn’t a thing, it’s just love (ladies, you’re going to make me cry). So as the weekly episodes came out and fans start speculating, THEY GAVE US THE LAST FEW EPISODES FULL OF ROMANCE AND EMOTIONAL SCENES BETWEEN THE TWO AND THEN THEY GET R I N GS?!???!! You watch for the figure skating, you stay for the figure skaters that are in love.
Shadowhunters (Freeform) 2016
Tumblr media
*insert me being frustrated that the actors are straight so we can move on from that disappointment*
This show really said “let’s name a whole episode after this couple because they deserve it”. But seriously, they gave us two characters whose entire plot does not center around their sexualities while still showing us the differences in a relationship between someone experienced and someone new at this. They were both powerful and amazing characters apart from each other, with their own story lines and goals but they loved each other so much omgs. SO MUCH.
It was so great to watch.
Love, Simon (2018)
Tumblr media
There’s a lot of disagreement on whether this movie is good representation or not. However, we need to take into consideration that this was Hollywood’s first movie with a main character that was gay, where the story’s focus was on Simon’s love story. The biggest problem, for me at least, was that the actor playing Simon is a straight man and not queer. My problem is not with him, but the fact that there are other actors that are gay and that could have played Simon just as well. (the love interested was however played by a queer actor so ✨progress✨)
All in all, this movie does represent what a lot of queer kids have to go through: being outed at school, how they then come out, the bullying and doubt they go through.
The book is also really good.
Call Me By Your Name (2018)
Tumblr media
This movie is so aesthetically pleasing and was able to capture the confusion and heartbreak felt by a boy who’s struggling with his own feelings towards a man. His inner conflict and joy and l o v e he feels but doesn’t know how to deal with is so well communicated through the screen and just breaks your heart because it feels so real.
But again, they could’ve gotten gay actors to play gay characters…
through having this list here, i want to show you that it’s not hard for creators to give good queer representation. the LGBTQ+ community isn’t asking for much, we just want to be well represented on screen as just a regular character, not some token queer kid there for the diversity points. having been exposed to so much queerbaiting and just not seeing any representation on screen, i always get over-excited when i see a queer character, and that’s not how it should be. it should be a normal thing, something you can find in most pieces of media, just like there’s a straight white cisgender person in everything.
and they seriously need to start casting queer actors for queer characters...

Can you rec some media with canon queer characters 😌
ofc!! thisll by no means be an exhaustive list but idk what youre looking for specifically so ill break it into categories
my current favs!! if u follow me u know these already lol
the umbrella academy: netflix show abt dysfunctional superpowered siblings reuniting to stop the apocalypse. canon mlm character (pansexual according to his actor) w mlm romance, canon wlw character (lesbian according to someone on the show dont rmr who) w het romance in s1, wlw romance in s2 - this is one of my absolute fav shows at the minute in general its brilliant
the magnus archives: horror podcast abt the head archivist of an institute researching experiences w the supernatural. protagonist is canonically biromantic asexual, in a mlm relationship in s5, and there is another canon bisexual character, as well as (iirc) a canon wlw couple - yall know ive been so into tma lately its so so good, obviously if you dont like horror its not for you but if you do.. 👀
sanders sides: youtube series abt a gay dude working out his emotional problems via personified aspects of his personality. all the characters are gay cuz thas what thomas is baby! - i was hesitant abt putting this cuz thomas is a person not a character lol but if u haven't seen sasi i recommend it its like free therapy but theres songs sometimes
shows!
julie and the phantoms (netflix remake): musical show abt a teen girl rediscovering music after her mothers death w the help of three ghosts who were in a 90s band. canon gay character w a slow burn romance (not yet canon bfs but s2 lets go) - its very cheesy and the musical segments can drag on a bit but its p good overall
lucifer: detective show abt lucifer abandoning his rule of hell to buy a nightclub and beginning to solve murders w the lapd. lucifer is canonically bi/pan, as is his demon pal mazikeen, but queerness rly isnt a focus of the show its more casual rep - that being said its a good show overall, if a little predictable now n then (s1-3 on amazon prime, 4+5 on netflix)
kipo and the age of wonderbeasts: fantasy cartoon set in a future filled w mutant intelligent animals, kipo finds herself lost and has to get home w the help of her friends. canon gay character as one of the mains, canon nb side character - its a rly good cartoon! lots of fun, excellent soundtrack, and the main characters are all poc which is rly nice to see
the dragon prince: cartoon abt two princes and an elf assassin returning a dragon egg to its mother. canon mlm couple, several canon wlw characters, canon nb character - i havent seen the show myself but ive heard very good things abt it!
i am not okay with this: netflix show abt a teen girl discovering she has superpowers and hating it. protag is canon wlw (i THINK shes a lesbian but i havent watched it in a hot sec), developing wlw relationship - ianowt slaps! sad that s2 got cancelled but s1 is real good its a touch spooky and theres a bit of gore/blood so watch out lol
schitt's creek: sitcom abt a rich family who lose all their money and have to move into the motel of a town they bought as a joke. canon pansexual character and canon gay character w one of the sweetest mlm relationships - a rly good witty show w excellent character development for every character!
good omens: show abt a demon and an angel trying to stop the end of the world. every celestial character in it is nonbinary, + crowley and aziraphale have a nonexplicit (ie no on screen pda lol) romance - good omens is such a good queer show none of the characters care abt gender in the slightest lmao, plus the show in general is fantastic (the book is also very good)
movies!
the old guard: a group of immortals fight an organisation that wants to capitalise off their immortality. canon mlm couple - another one i havent seen yet (i will!) but apparently very good
it chapter 2: horror sequel to It, w the main characters returning to derry to defeat pennywise for good. canon gay character in unrequited love - i only say chapter 2 because his queerness isnt referenced at all in the first film, again its big horror and theres no gay romance just gay tragedy but its a good film
love, simon: romcom about a closeted gay teen falling in love w someone over emails. do i even need to state the rep? - honestly if u haven't seen love simon yet what are you even DOING its so good proper fluffy queer romcom, the book (simon vs the homosapiens agenda) is also really good!! so is the sequel (leah on the offbeat) where the protag is a bi girl + it focuses on a wlw romance
the way he looks: brazilian coming of age film abt a blind teen boy falling for the new kid at his school. canon mlm relationship - this doesnt seem to be on (british) netflix anymore so idk where youd find it with subtitles but i rmr liking it a lot!
games!
night in the woods: 2d platformer abt a young woman (well. cat) dropping out of college and coming home to live w her parents + discovering spooky happenings in her hometown. canon mlm couple and i believe the protag is canonically bi? - i will recommend nitw to literally anyone who will listen its one of my all time favourite games, deals w a lot of mental health issues and its absolutely gorgeous w a brilliant soundtrack and rly good dialogue thats witty and serious and realistic (its on steam + switch for sure dk abt other platforms, abt 15 quid i think?)
tell me why: adventure game abt twins returning to their childhood home + findin Secrets. canon trans male character - i havent got around to buying + playing this yet but it looks really good! (its in three chapters + on steam, not sure on price)
other media!
the art of being normal: slice of life novel abt a young trans girl discovering herself. main characters are a trans man and a trans woman. - a good novel! trigger warning for transphobic actions including descriptions of a transphobic attack on the guy, and its certainly not without its faults otherwise, but i thought it was pretty good
the adventure zone: dungeons and dragons podcast by the mcelroy brothers. idk specifics but theres a lot of canon queer characters in it! - i havent listened to taz yet but i know a lot abt it, inc that its good and funny and has plenty of queer rep
theres several more i like that arent listed here but to keep this from getting just ridiculously long ill leave it there :] tried to get a range of genres and medias, hopefully theres something for you in there!

Legend of the Three Caballeros: Labyrinth and Repeat Review (Commissioned by WeirdKev27)
Tumblr media
Saludos Amigos! We’re back on the Ride of the Three Cablleros as I intend to knock this wonderful series out at a steady cliip, and since I THOUGHT the premire was a two parter, it still ends on a cliffhanger but it’s too early to tell if this is just normal for this series like say Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, where it’s really more one continuous story, or just the end of the pilot. For now with all the exposition out of the way from part 1, we can jump right into the thick of things where we picked off.  PREVIOUSLY ON LEGEND OF THE THREE CABLLEROS: Donald had an enormously shitty birthday, loosing his job, his house and his nightmarish harpy.. er his girlfriend, all in one day. Things went up a bit though when he inhereted a Cabana belonging to his ancestor Clinton Coot and met two new pals: Ladies Man Jose Caricoca and loveable weirdo like myself Pancito Romero A Lot of Other Names Gonzales. The three soon had a yard sale with the various treasures inside the cabana and got an offer for a million dollars for the cabana and all inside from local waiter’s nightmare Baron Von Sheldgoose, whose deal includes a jewel incrusted golden atlas. Upon finding it our boys were attacked by a human goddess who popped out of the book and that’s where we pick up.
Tumblr media
Good. Let’s begin. So Xandra, said goddess, is holding our heroes at arrow point with their attempts to defuse the situation falling flat and their attempt to understandably flee by claming to be the cabs failing pretty much immidatley. We do get some good gags including Jose accidently telling Xandra she smells like feta cheese in greek. But lucky for our boys before Xandra can do a murder on them Donald accidently shuts the book.. and finds out she disappears when he does that. Cue our loveable idiots opening and closing the book for a while, easily one of the best bits of the episode. I will say while the pilot was pretty good comedy wise this episode solidfies how funy the series is. The series is at times a barrage of wonderful jokes and set pieces and it is awesome to behold.  Also a breif thing before we get back to the plot... Xandra is indeed human, or at least looks like one. Normally i’m against this as honestly Ducks just mesh better with Dogfaces, other birds and other anthromorphic animals. It just works better and is more consitent to have a world that’s simply anthro animals and non-anthro animals. But.. it works for me here since so the human characters.. are all gods. While i’d of PREFFERED them to still be non humans, like Ducktales does, it works since she’s not really a human but a god and thus it comes off more as her being something inherently diffrent and otherworldly, but something that’s not so distracting it pulls focus away from the rest of the cast, just otherworldly to our heroes.
So while our boy screw with the goddess who you know, tried to murder them for flimsy reasons without stopping to ask why three strangers look exactly like her friends, we get to know the triplets better. I also get a better bead on what voices Jessica is using. May is using Jessica’s Lynn voice, just a touch higher since May isn’t a preteen, while April, the one in yellow, uses the voice she’d later use for candace. Junes is a BIT like Lucy, but with obviously way more energy and emotion. But it’s clear the three are smart confident and willing to run a scheme, and easily get a thousand bucks out of sheldgoose for the spooky purple ring he saw last episode in a really chortleriffic bit where May serves as an auctioneer while her sisters up the price by bidding thus tricking Sheldgoose into paying. They also get past him having a claim on it as he dosen’t have a receipt or anything else other than a verbal contract with Donald, one that wasn’t even complete since the boys hadn’t brought out the atlas, so they were within their rights to fleece him for the ring.. even if him getting it at all is going to backfire, they had no way of knowing that so it’s whatever.  Back in the house the boys have apparently done the  book thing on Xandra about a hundred times, and Xandra FINALLY grabs the book. At least our boys are bonding. But while threatening them again , she finds out they don’t know what happened.. and recongiing clinton int he painting realizess time has passed, these boys are her boys decendants, and perhaps some explination is in order since she’s lost in a strange world.
So after unveling a bookmark that allows her to project out of the book without being trapped, Xandra gives us our backstory: long ago, in a distant land I Aku master of darkness unleashed an unspeakable evil... wait sorry wrong narration. Long ago Xandra was guardian of the Atlas, which is explained to be the key to various magical hot spots around the world where various myths come from. Things were fine.. until the evil Lord Felldrake decided to screw it all up, binding Xandra to the book and using it to cause chaos and try and take over the world. All was lost till the Cabs stopped him, freed Xandra best they could, and then journed the world with them till she tragically was shut inside the book and seemingly lost. For whatever reason Clinton never opened the book, we’ll presumibly find out later, and well.. here she is.  Xandra is voiced by, unsuprisingly given this project’s all-star cast, voice acting vetran and modern legend of the buisness Grey DeLisle, also credited as Grey Griffith for a time. And like tress she has a rather massive and awesome resume, which naturally i’ll be going into since usually I go into shows mid way and don’t get to do this: Grey’s notable rolls include Daphne Blake ever since What’s New, Scooby Doo?, Lor from Weekenders, still not on plus and I will not let that fact go till I get a valid reason why not, Crazy Cat Lady and Lizzie Divine, Mandy, Doctor Ghastly, Kimiko Tohomiko, Sam Manson, Frankie Foster, Azula, Riley Daring, Freida Suarez, Black Canary (Brave and the Bold), Fire, Dr. Holiday, Aya, Master Nadia, Magpie, Moon Butterfly, Jackie Lynn Thomas, Lola Loud, Lana Loud, Lily Loud, and Martin Prince following Russi Taylors tragic passing, just to give you an idea of how long, varied and wonderful her career and range is. And to give a certain person paying for this review an idea of some of the shows i’m familiar with. Moving on.  Despite learning of their family legacy of heroics, our heroes are planning to still sell the book given Donald and Jose are poor, and Panchito’s giving in to peer pressure. Seriously Camil is already the MVP of the series, easily the best part of it and it’s a shame he wasn’t brought back for Ducktales, especially since by season 2 frank was aware of legend and Jamie had been on the show before. But Xandra offers them a life of adventure and heroisim.. and when that fails points out theirs treasure and the boys agree to hear her out.  So after showing some off Xandra takes them to a Labyrinth to retreive three mystic amulets, and goads Donald into going in by challenging his Ego after he tries to refuse to go. Panchito is naturally fully on board with a dangerous adventure and Jose is talked into it after Xandra pulls an explination why she can’t go out of her firmly toned ass that theirs a mystic barrier which he buys. So while Xandra conjurs a chair and a coconut drink to relax and wait to see if they die or not, our boys head in.  They find a massive, beautiful labyrnith and a large house containing a minotaur. Sadly i’ts not Ferdinand aka the Minotaur who worked as Wonder Woman’s chef, cooking up damn good vegetarian goodies for her at the Thymsicarian Embasy. All of this is real things that happened and all are things that should be in the next fucking movie. Seriously as much of a mess as Wonder Woman 1984 is, i’d buy a ticket in a heartbeat caution to teh wind if it was announced he was being adapted for it. He’s also very smart, kind and loyal if you were wondering. Get yourself a man like feridnand if your into men.
Anyways Jose once again tries to speak a languge, and thus we get about a minute of Eric Bauza saying the word moo... sometimes... most times really.. I REALLY, REALLY love my job. But with the bull pissed off and going super sayian god super sayian, there’s only one thing left for our heroes to do...
Tumblr media
So they do and we get a great gag where Donald, when deciding wether to split up as to lower the possiblity of him getting hit, has TWO shoulder devils, because inside every man is a battle between good and evil that evil usually wins while dancing and singing a jaunty toon over good’s grave.
Tumblr media
But it naturally backfires and the two devils tell him he’s on his own. So we get a fun chase sequence with the three before Donald finally decides fuck it we can fight back. Noticing Panchito’s talent with a rope, he has him rope and ride the Minotaur which he does, then uses Jose’s hankerchief to lure the minotaur and beat him. It’s a gorgeous, fun action sequence that shows off the series is as cool as it is fricking hilaroius.  So our heroes find the amulets, a blue one for donald, a red for panchito and green for jose, and put em on, proudly telling Xandra. It’s then revealed the Minotaur.. is an old friend of hers and this was just a test to see if they could work together and you know.. not die. They can, and she’s proud and plesantly suprised by how good they are.  So our heroes return home, Xandra storring the atlas on her back, and all three suitably impressed. Their further impressed when they find a hidden lair with more treasure, and three sets of armor, their ancestors old armor which as it did in the teaser at the start of the series, looks REALLY fucking cool and comes from various civlizations. Just.. lovely to look at. Our heroes pose.. and the nieces find them, wonder what’s going on, and mention Sheldgoose at the door, apparnelty not phased to meet a god or that their surrogate uncle has a hlemet.  Sheldgoose has come to offer the money.. and it’s REALLY tempiting. Donald has lost EVERYTHING remember, this money could help win Daisy back, get him a fancy house still in new quackmore.. even a third of a million is still enough to set someone as humble and easy to please as donald for life. But.. it’s here where this episode succeds where the premire fell. By this point we’ve SEEN Donald’s weaknsses: he’s greedy, short sighted and selfish. So it makes it THAT MUCH more impactful when he does the right thing, tearing up the check and refusing to sell out his legacy. Sure this could make his life better.. but it’s not worth his soul, his new friends or the world’s safety. He may not be able to get Daisy back or a new house.. but he’d NEVER be able to repalce his new friends, his legacy, or his wonderful new home.  Sheldgoose naturally throws a fit and vows vengance and what have you... and just as naturally gets dragged away by his ring. Like the boys he’s brought to a mystic secret chamber by a family heirloom.. but unlike the boys we get a wonderful sequence of him being slammed into things while Wayne Knight makes delightful noises.
Tumblr media
But Sheldgoose finds thanks to the ring he was drawn to a styigan well leading to a talking staff... Felldrake surivived, if trapped in the staff.. and  he’s Baron’s ancestor, himself a sheldgoose who urges his decsendant to take the staff, accept his destiny and thus Sheldgoose revels in his new power as he and feldrake summon Feldrake’s loyal minon.
Tumblr media
So we end on Donald happy. His day was crappy to start.. but while he lost his house, his shrew and his job.. he’s found a new purpose saving the world, an ew life of adventure.. and forever friends in his two new amigos and goddess mentor. He’s finally happy. OR he is for a a second before Feldrake’s minon emerges from it’s sarcophagus and runs off with donald. TO BE CONTINUED. Not doing the jojo gag this time.
Before we go on one last cast member; Kevin Micheal Richardson is Felldrake, and he is unsuprisingly awesome and like Grey has a long and storied career.. you know the drill by now: He’s voiced  the Narrator for Clerks the Animated Series, Robert Hawkins (Static’s Dad), Dark Laser, Numbah 5′s dad who was a VERY poorly aged refrence to Bill Cosby, Mammoth, Trigon, Armagedddroid (Something I never realized holy shit good on him), Captain Gantu, The Joker, Pandabubba, Principal Lewis, Schnitzel, Tombstone, Omega Supreme, Cleavland Junior (They drove a dump truck full of money up to his house he’s not made of stone), Mal Duncan, Doctor Fate, Man Ape, Kilowogg, Sheriff Blubs, William Viceroy , Mr. Gus, Rhombulous, Shredder (TMNT 2012), Rosie Rosevelt, Coach Mitchell (Seriously watch Milo Murphy’s Law, we need a season 3), and Dot’s Zit. As you can tell the guy is VERY good at villians so he was a natural choice.
Final Thoughts: This was a huge improvment. With the miserable parts of the pilot long gone this episode is a fun, breezy adventure that sets up our heroes, the series tone, and our bad guy some more while giving us tons of great gags. I highly look forward to whatever comes next and cannot wait for the next episode. Until then, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.

My fav cartoons... ranked
There might be a few hot takes and i havent seen a few big contendors, but here’s my cartoon shows i love ranked! this is really just for me to write about them lol.
Netflix’s Carmen Sandiego ... 10/10
This 2019 reboot of the original Carmen Sandiego is pretty much perfect? I watched the original show on and it was great! I was really afraid i wouldnt like the reboot and be biased. But honestly? This show made me personally so happy and excited for the future of Carmen Sandiego. The world building, story telling, animation, characters. and interactions are so ??? amazing?? It has sub-plots that tie in so nicely to the main plot and advances each character. The show also has great representation and found family is pretty strong. It’s really easy to watch and to me, that’s a big thing. I could watch it while doing a second activity and wouldn’t be completely lost. Also very high rewatch ability.
Netflix’s The Hollow ... 7/10 and 9.5/10
Two ratings? One for the first season and one for the second. The Second season of The Hollow outshines the first by so much but that doesn’t mean the First season is bad! If you’ve ever watched Digimon Adventure to the end, then you will see the resemblance. I can’t write much about the story without major spoilers, but it is such an interesting tale. The world building is very very good. You get to learn where they are and where they’re going and how each place fits in to one another. The 3 main characters really have a dynamic relationship. And Representation?? WELL this show knows a thing or two about that. Honestly The Hollow deserves way more recognition than it deserves. It’s pretty easy to watch and everything is worth it for season 2.
Netflix’s Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts ... 8.5/10
Okay Kipo is such an amazing show! The only thing that would keep someone from watching it would be the art style of the humans, but its simply different and also fits the show really well. The art is just superb tho. The backgrounds and locations just brings a tear to my eye. Also World building?? Kipo is a master of that! Found Family? Kipo OWNS that. Representation??? Kipo made that! Kipo is such a good show for people of all ages to see a part of themselves. For me, the first episode was a little hard to watch because it felt very lonely? You could tell Kipo was someone who wanted and florished off making people happy and being with them, but in that same episode she does find Wolf. But this also sets up exceptional growth in all characters. Also Benson?? love him.  Rat World? love that. Frogs in suits? Mutant pigs and rabbits? Lesbian Snake rockers? OH DID I MENTION THE MUSIC?? Its a diverse range of music that really helps introduce emotion, element, and just??  love it all.
Glitch Techs ... 8/10
The art and characters are amazing? Very easy watch with high rewatchability. good rep and concept. i am v tired but please give this show a chance !!
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power ... 5/10
Okay plain and simple? This show is not good from a critique standpoint? Or watcher? It’s honestly so hard to watch and stay motivated to watch. The real good thing is LGBT+ rep. It’s like they said “Hey let’s reboot She-ra, but make it gay.” “Okay what’s the storyline?” “That is the storyline.” and went n that. The first season is good and i kinda liked it! But it’s so hard to understand whats at stake? Cause its always the world? Like 3 times. There is no character or attachment at stake. Mara was the biggest loss in the show and she wasn’t even a main character. I have an issue Catradora too. When i watched it I saw the hurt that Catra caused Adora? Like physically and mentally. Even as a child Catra physically hurt Adora because she was upset. And the excuse is she was abused by Shadow Weaver? Like? Just becaused she was abused does not give her an excuse to do the same thing. I also have a problem with fans saying hordak is disabled rep and i really hope he wasn’t intended to be. He was healed and rid of his dying body. Real disabled people are never that lucky? You don’t get rid of a disability in disabled rep? In Gender and Sexuality i was very happy with this show but in terms of everything else??  Not too happy... It’s kinda of like Steven Universe? God rep, but bad story telling? It’s so iffy. Like sometimes you;ll get a good episode or sometimes you;ll get something which really just doesnt fit.
Might make reviews but her’s some recommendations:
- ATLA (obviously lol this show rocks)
- The Willoughbys
- Hilda
- Lego Ninjago
- Digimon
- Bojack Horseman
- All Saints Street (A chinese Animation but god the op is a bop and the show is so good. It’s on Youtube)
- Camp Camp
- The Amazing World of Gumball (Duh this show is a god)
- Over the Garden Wall (!!!! please!!!!)

Five Streaming Animated Shows to Catch Up On This Weekend
Nickelodeon’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” bent earth, fire, air, water and the internet when it returned to Netflix this summer.
What else has been hiding in plain sight on your streaming services? Here are a few of our favorites:
1) Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts (DREAMWORKS/STUDIO MIR/NETFLIX)
Tumblr media
For Fans of: Adventure Time, Legend of Korra, Rick & Morty, Star vs. the Forces of Evil (Adventure, Action, Comedy)
Based on a 2015 webcomic by show creator Radford Sechrist (“Ben 10: Omniverse”), “Kipo” very likely has what you need, with amazing creatures, exciting post-apocalyptic landscapes, lovable heroes, catchy soundtrack and human-sized animals in funny clothes.
Two seasons, 20 episodes.
2) Glitch Techs (NICKELODEON/NETFLIX)
Tumblr media
For Fans of: Gravity Falls, Amazing World of Gumball, OK K.O.: Let’s Be Heroes, Phineas & Ferb (Action, Comedy)
Glitch Techs follows Miko and High Five, two talented gamers inducted into a secret group of Geek Squad/Ghostbusters who catch glitched video games. Cartoony action and warm friendships combine with Gravity Falls/Star vs. the Forces of Evil composer Brad Breeck’s score for a modern Spy Kids 3D experience fast-paced mystery show.
Two seasons, 19 episodes.
3) Wizards [Tales of Arcadia] (DREAMWORKS/NETFLIX)
Tumblr media
For Fans of: Trollhunters, 3Below, The Dragon Prince, Sym-bionic Titan (Fantasy, Adventure)
The third entry into what Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters started takes its heroes back in time, with Camelot raising the stakes and time travel driving the plot. The show will be followed by a feature film called Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans in 2021.
One season, 10 episodes.
4) Phineas & Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe (DISNEY PLUS)
Tumblr media
For Fans of: Phineas & Ferb (obviously), Milo Murphy’s Law, Big City Greens, DuckTales (Comedy, Musical, Sci-fi)
We haven’t actually watched this one yet because it releases TODAY, but Doofenshmirtz himself has been teasing it for weeks on Twitter and we’re very excited for more of what’s possibly cartooning’s catchiest soundtrack. So yes, we know what you’re going to do today: make your weekend all about Candace.
5) Infinity Train: Book 3 (CARTOON NETWORK/HBO MAX)
Tumblr media
For Fans of: Over the Garden Wall, Steven Universe, The Owl House, Adventure Time (Adventure, Comedy, Sci-fi)
Animated anthology series Infinity Train began as a corgi-filled short film from Cartoon Network but has expanded into its third season with a new cast of characters and plenty of incredible train cars to explore. You can catch up on the first two “seasons” with this HBO Max Family video (link). Or, since this is an anthology, you can dive right in with this most recent entry.
Three seasons (One season for Book 3, 10 episodes)

What are some shows you like?
Here’s some of the ones that come to mind, and why I like them :D
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts - post apocalypse done well, every character is a person of color, world building is very sound and believable, animation’s cute, also the soundtrack fucking slaps
Round Planet - nature documentary with commentary that just fucking slaps, very funny, please watch it
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power - overall good show, cute animation, the ending made me very happy, has some arcs i didn’t like but the overarching storyline made up for it, lovely lgbt rep
Gilmore Girls - i like watching this with my family, the dialogue is well-written and banter-y, fun characters and plot that i can disappear into, small town vibes that are written by someone who has obviously never lived in a small town but i’ll excuse it because i enjoy the show
Steven Universe - animation is adorable, love the dynamic of the three aliens trying to figure out how to raise a small human child who also has alien powers, lots of great lessons on various things, the world building is lovely and the characters are three-dimensional and believable, there are lgbt characters here too
Buzzfeed: Unsolved - i just really enjoy the dynamic between the two hosts, also appreciate how they literally know nothing about anything they investigate, true crime but they’re always just like “fuck this dude was messed up”, hosts drink their respect women juice, as someone who believes in ghosts because family members have been known to come into contact with them there’s definitely an element of genuine paranormal activity in this one
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? - i watched this a lot as a kid and it makes me very happy because it’s kind of like a comfort show for me
What’s New, Scooby-Doo? - again, watched it as a kid, comforting when i’m having a bad day
Antiques Roadshow - love learning about different old things it makes me happy, fun to find out that a plate a lady’s been serving potatoes on for years is actually a picasso, even better when you see this old white man try to sell off something as an ‘ancient indian relic’ but it turns out he was fucking scammed
Avatar: The Last Airbender - this show is just amazing, it’s got so many great themes it would take too long to list them all here, the character arcs are great, love how the world is built so it feels almost like our world but not quite, all characters are asian, sibling dynamic between two main characters is so fucking relatable, even the episodes that feel like filler episodes aren’t really filler, best villain redemption ever, just a wonderful show overall
The Great British Bake Off - the best cooking/baking show ever, incredibly pure, everyone’s kind to each other and it’s quite lovely, plus all the bakes look really tasty and the hosts are fun!
Good Omens - wonderful book-to-show adaptation, probably one of the better takes on christianity in general (i went to catholic school for my primary education so it was fun to see biblical elements of the show) but it’s also not really a religious show at all, the characters are fun, love the witch character because she’s just pretty badass, the kids are written so that they feel very much like kids which a lot of writers have a hard time doing
Phineas and Ferb - the plot’s repetitive but i can still watch multiple episodes back to back without getting bored, i love all the characters, the villain is great because he’s super smart but he devotes all of his time to fighting his platypus nemesis and building crazy machines the he thinks will help him take over the tri-state area, all of the songs are bops, the protagonists are little rays of sunshine, the dialogue always makes me smile, protagonists come from multiple different cultural backgrounds
Gravity Falls - i'm a sucker for mysteries and conspiracy so this is a fave, the animation’s really fun and adds to the story, a great overarching plot line for a kid’s show, the family dynamic is believable and relatable, accurate portrayal of sibling relationship, kids summon demons: not clickbait
Milo Murphy’s Law - in the phineas and ferb universe, overarching plot lines that are fun, time-travelers and middle school shenanigans, the protagonist always has the worst happen to him but he always has a positive attitude which is really wonderful and he’s honestly just a ray of sunshine
Gayle - a youtube series, so fucking funny, pretty much the chronicles of a karen

For the Character ask meme, Agatha Harkness
First impression: Okay, Agnes is... okay. She’s kinda funny, even if her jokes about how much she hates her husband Ralph is a bit grating. She’s also highkey suspicious. Plus... the last time Kathryn Hahn played a seemingly innocuous and comedic character with seemingly no comics counterpart in a Marvel property, that character ended up being a villain. You’re not fooling me again, Ms. Hahn!
Impression now: Witchy love of my LIFE! Best Marvel villain since Killmonger, and I need to see her again! (As herself, obviously, her forced into the “Agnes” persona creeps me the fuck out.) Can she please have a spinoff?!
Favorite moment: Uh, how about that absolute banger of a villain song? What an introduction to the real her!
Idea for a story: Ever since I saw that gifset of the most powerful MCU magic users, I want to see a team-up. Agatha teaming up with Wanda, Stephen Strange, and Loki for whatever reason! I Just Think It’d Be Neat.
Unpopular opinion: Hmm. I have a few but I think I’ll go with: yeah, what ended up happening to her is pretty damn cruel, actually? And no, even though she did horrible shit, she did not deserve that because no one deserves that, ever. And I’m 85% sure the writers intended this as a character choice for Wanda to show that she can be pretty cruel (which I am Very Okay with, do not get me wrong! I love seeing female characters do fucked up things! That’s why, for instance, I adored Glimmer in s4 and her terrible choices.) but I also do not trust the MCU to follow up on any of that properly. They’d totally handwave it away as, oh, she’s the bad guy, so it’s totes cool to just trap her in her mind like that, that’s super chill! I just can’t help contrasting it to say, what Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts did, where they actually did have the Big Bad end up trapped in her own mind (due to her own actions) and Kipo... freed her from that, reasoning that even though she’s a terrible person, no one deserves to have their mind taken away from themselves, not even her.
Favorite relationship: I adore the relationship between her and Wanda. I got a sense that (and I feel vindicated about it from some of the interviews I’ve read from the creator) Agatha still on some level wanted to connect with Wanda over magic and shit, while still also being a) highkey jealous in that classic DND Wizard vs DND Sorcerer way that Wanda has access to all this crazy magic without studying at all (which, I mean. I get it, man.) and b) power-hungry and selfish so that would certainly make their relationship, ahem, less-than-ideal. It’s a bit funny because before the reveal, I maybe thought for a minute about Wanda/Agnes as a relationship after seeing a gifset of them from the 50s ep with a not-insignificant amount of touching, captioned “Harold....” but ultimately didn’t think much of it as a ship, but as soon as the Agatha reveal happened. Well. What’s better than enemies-to-lovers, amirite? (Also made me realize that the MCU really hasn’t had much fuel for f/f enemies-to-lovers ships until now. The only example I can think of is Peggy/Dottie from Agent Carter. Granted, maybe AoS had some, I never watched much of that show. But the previous female villains in MCU movies (I specify movies cuz those are the ones made by the same studio that made WandaVision I believe), Nebula, Hela, and Ghost, wouldn’t have had that kind of shipping fuel because, in Nebula’s case, the only female Guardian of the Galaxy is her sister, so, no. In Hela’s case, she really didn’t interact with Valkyrie that much? And in Ghost’s case... again, she also didn’t really interact with Hope that much. Though maybe there’s something there with Janet, IDK. Janet did heal her.)
Favorite headcanon: Hmm. I’ve got several. I’ve already mentioned the “moonlighted as a campaign manager named ‘Jennifer Barkley’ in the 2010s” one before so I’ll try to pick another favorite. I think it’s a tossup between, all her jokes about hating her husband was her impression of what straight people are like, and she has some unspecified beef with Loki and they have a mutual hatred/some petty rivalry going on. Granted, I’m stuck between the latter headcanon and “actually if they ever met, they’d get along like a house on fire and possibly set the whole world on fire, oh dear,” mostly cuz I can’t decide which I like more.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeats: Season Two
Tumblr media
(I’m using a Season 1 poster, because the Season 2 poster is a bit spoiler-ish for the series as a whole and I want to keep this post spoiler-free.)
I finished watching Season 2 of Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts yesterday. The second season started off a bit slow, but once it got going it was fire! So good! The first season took a very simplistic approach to the issues presented within the series. But this second season is when things not only get complicated, but also complex. The answers and solutions are simple, cut and dry. Music and the Power of Friendship can’t fix everything, but at the same time it never goes the whole nihilistic, grim-dark “mature” route either. Instead, issues are presented in a way that shows both sides, but also doesn’t fall comfortably in that “both sides are right” area either. It still presents certain actions, responses, and situations as being more or less morally and ethically okay. But the approach to it all isn’t black and white, which is very important for family-orientated TV shows.
Obviously, shows aimed at extremely young children (like toddlers) will explain and approach things in very simple, black and white mentalities, because children that age can’t really fully grasp all of the complexities of certain topics. But Kipo isn’t a show aimed at toddlers, it is a show aimed at children still, but slightly older ones. And I’m so happy to see it not shying away from complicated and messy topics such as science, experimentation, and ethics, diplomacy and extremism/authoritarianism, and (the very commonly found trope in children aimed media) the trope that simply love or simply music or simply acceptance can fix everything.
I’m keeping this post spoiler-free, so things are going to remain vague here, but this season of Kipo really explores the good, bad, and the ugly of all of these things while continuing to expand on the aspects of the first season that made it so charming (the awesome music, the creative creatures and settings, and the fun action sequences). If you haven’t given Kipo a watch before, I definitely recommend it. The first season is great and this second season continues along that same path, while also adding more depth and complexity to the plot and characters.
