as a general rule, on average, if americans consistently complain about a food being conceptually weird, gross, and scary, then it probably tastes amazing. or at least inoffensive.

this is because in my experience americans for the most part (give or take a few exceptions by region) think eating literally anything other than beef, chicken, bread, eggs, peanut butter jelly sandwitches, ketchup, and disgusting cloyingly artificial brown sludge soda is insurmountably weird, gross, and scary.

I keep wondering how Ice Queendom is being received by people without prior RWBY experience. Existing fans are generally having a great time but half of that comes from the show expanding on character arcs we've already watched and analyzed. It's bonus material.

Does that work for new fans? Ice Queendom is clearly meant to be friendly to new viewers but I can see things that would hold it back. JNPR has even less characterization than this point in the original show, and Blake and Yang aren't getting as much development as Ruby and Weiss. The show quickly delves into the nightmare arc, a sudden departure from the gang fighting and monster hunting set up in Volume 1. I'm not sure if Weiss's inner turmoil will land for people not already familiar with her full character arc.

i want to say angst but i don't like angst without its layers, and that would not make it not quite angst anymore? anyways, i like things with high conflict and tension, angst comes close.

49. What fic of yours would you say is the best introduction to you as a writer?

oooh. this is a tough question... i would say ready, aim, fire (venti). it's a writing style edging on what i would consider my ideal writing style. the story has a structure (start, middle, end), and it's all delivered with poetic writing that ties the story to the larger prompt.

68. Are there any fics that influenced you to write the way you do?

no fic in particular, but my experience reading fics has formed rules that shape my writing. for example, i don't like flashback arcs so i try to avoid them in my works. i am not good with keeping up with time/dates when reading, so i tend to write without time in mind.

72. What’s your favorite writing compliment you’ve gotten?

asking to pick a favourite compliment is like asking to pick a favourite child. feels wrong but undoubtedly there will be a favourite child, haha. i think it has to be when someone shares how the fic made them feel. i know there are shortcomings in my execution, but ultimately, i am trying my best because i want my stories to leave an impact. so when people share with me how the fic made them feel, it's the biggest compliment to know my words are alive.

SO glad you asked. sadly, many of the materials made for the arg have been taken down since the game ended 😔 (ex., the official OIAR, magnus institute, and bonzoland websites. (edit ii: I found partial wayback machine captures! see below) though @strangehauntsuk is still up!), so we're a bit low on primary sources, but in terms of learning about what happened:

for a starting point, I would really recommend this video by @pinkelotjeart

it's super accessible, it was made in real time as the game progressed and follows the solving and revelation of clues as they happened, it hits all the major points of the mystery and moments of community insanity while eliding some of the nitty gritty puzzle grinding, 10/10 would recommend.

here's the official summary put out by RQ, and I'd recommend reading through this once you've already gotten a basic handle on the flow of the story and the basic connections between major clues and events. it's got some fun behind-the-scenes info and lays out the thought process behind the puzzles in simple terms

here's the full masterdoc of all puzzles and resolutions put together in the statement remains discord server. masterdoc my absolute BELOVED, masterdoc my bethrothed, masterdoc my soul mate. I'd recommend this as a second port of call after the above video as it either contains all details about the puzzles or links to other expanded docs that do.

here's the narrative summary doc that lays out all the plot and lore discovered in three pages of plain prose. if you just want to get to the good bits as fast as you can and get blasted directly in the face by contextless lore bombs, this is the doc for you. if you don't want to start with the video, I'd say this is another good entry point.

once you've got the lay of the land, some of the game materials that I found particularly interesting include:

the in-universe east germany expat usenet forum, with all content translated into english. most of it is irrelevant space filler with occasional extremely sus lore, but I still found it fun to read through. love to soak in some fictional forum drama.
